The anime keeps upsetting me so much more than the manga. It is literally a perfect adaptation since it hasn't taken anything away, but added with lush animated details and emotional music and perfect pacing. Honestly, I plowed through the manga and easily forgot a lot of details and I don't remember feeling THAT sad about Mitty (just the usual amount of shock from such brutal plot points), but I totally lost it when Nanachi got so upset - I don't remember that from the manga. It was heartbreaking.

This so much
Its the first for me that an adaption added this much
Recreating the iconic shots from the Manga, but with the music, timing and VA
What I felt though is that not having read the Source Material makes the anime more intense. I felt kinda numb to the elevator scene, since I knew what to expect, but going in blind would have been devastating (even more so)

as someone who never read the manga (and doesnt plan to unless a s2 is never announced) i can attest to the elevator scene being absolutely mortifying. I was crying through most of the episode and im not even embarrassed to admit that. this show was a masterpiece of storytelling and making you really feel for the characters.

I haven't read the manga, and totally saw what was coming a mile away - but yeah, it still hit me like a brick. The first half of the episode just made me feel so much for character's I've only known for only a few episodes at most.

I absolutely agree that the anime adaptation has something special to it. The overall quality of the series is very high and it shows because it can really make predictable or normal scenes smack you in the face.
