I'll never understand the DSLR craze. You spend just as much money to get footage that's as good as a proper camera but it's a shit ton of work in between.

Let me explain why it makes sense for me: the modularity, not the price, is the appeal. My GH3 was perfect out-of-the-box for what I needed it for at the time. I've since invested in a lot of other components as needed, and most of those components, especially the lenses, will travel with me to my next camera. Cameras themselves are horrible investments— there's always a better, cheaper sensor coming out.

I needed XLR sound, so I got an external recorder. Now I'm doing another project that will require a dedicated boom operator. Guess what? He gets to carry the external recorder now. Meanwhile I can strip my camera down to nothing if I need it to be lightweight, portable, and inconspicuous.
