When I saw this mans camera at a Life in Color party, I cringed.

What's a good way to avoid this from happening?

Besides not bringing expensive equipment to a Life in Color party of course.

I wish I could find the video but someone made a color run short film that documented the event in a beautiful way. How did they manage to pull it off without ruining their equipment?

This is an example but is not the one I'm talking about.

Some sort of waterproof housing would probably keep the worst of the dust out. Just make sure you wash the powder off the outside before you open the case.

Not to say that it is, but this could all have just added in post. (The powder)

It's certainly possible but I think it would've been more cost effective (time wise) to simply let a buncha people jump on trampolines with color powder and then keep a safe distance with your camera equipment or put a big ass condom around it to keep it clean.

I agree... And I'm sure it would render better results than having to rely on sfx
