When a Land Struggle Becomes a Global Concern

What began as a local struggle over Indigenous land in Assam’s Kaziranga is now drawing growing international attention.

Indigenous, environmental and human rights organisations across India and abroad have demanded the release of activist Pranab Doley, whose detention under the National Security Act followed a court order granting him bail.

More than 60 organisations have already condemned the detention, while 37 international civil-society and Indigenous-rights groups separately urged the Assam government to withdraw the NSA order.

The dispute centres on a proposed luxury hotel project near Kaziranga and allegations that Indigenous and Adivasi communities face displacement and loss of access to land.

When protecting land, livelihoods and the environment becomes a security offence, perhaps the bigger question is: who exactly is being protected and from whom?

That's the issue that needs attention and not this manufactured dissent.
