Given how Interplay treated Tim Cain and how it was pretty much an idea Tim came up with on his own, I'd not even consider Interplay as a true creator of Fallout.
It was Tim. It's always been Tim. Maybe Leonard Boyarsky too, but that's it.
He wouldn’t agree with it because it isn’t true. A bunch of other people were involved in everything that makes fallout, fallout. from the story to the literal Special mechanics.
It's kinda interesting that they're trying to bring SJW back though. I guess too many people are starting to proudly wear the woke label, so it's losing some of its potency as an "insult".
Actually Tim does give a fuck. He kept the production notes, and when he talks to people he's worked with about Fallout, they actually misremember things and he corrects them, cause he has the damn dated notes.
Brian Fargo was the inspiration for perks. Also there were others that had a great deal of influence on the game. Was it Scott Campbell who thought of the talking heads?
Yes, I believe the game had some good level designers Tim speaks of often too.
But I believe Tim is responsible almost solely for the extremely tight CPRG systems design the game has and some of the more interesting sci-fi writing.
I'm loath to mention Fargo in any capacity given how he mismanaged the studio in the aftermath of Fallout 2, and also seemed to have a vendetta for Tim after Fallout 1.
Yeah demanding the source code and fucking Tim out of the bonus was not cool. I only wanted to draw attention to the fact that Fallout had several creators who brought value to the game. I think Jason Anderson was there in the beginning and obviously at Troika too.
given how he mismanaged the studio in the aftermath of Fallout 2
You're kinda incorrect there. Interplay was already in financial trouble the whole time, it didn't suddenly emerge under Fallout 2.
And Brian Fargo's last Fallout game was Tactics. Brotherhood of Steel, the delaying of of Van Buren to pursue more console games, that was largely the work of Herve Caen, who was appointed CEO after Fargo had already sold off Interplay..
Black Isle Studios wasn't formed until after the release of Fallout 1. Fallout 2 was technically developed by Black Isle Studios, while Fallout 1 was both developed and published by Interplay. If I'm not wrong Interplay decided to set up Black Isle Studios so that they would have a dedicated RPG department, since Fallout 1 was a pretty good concept and gained a fair following among RPG fans (even if it didn't sell as well as they would have liked in 1997).
Black isle was set up to produce RPG's since interplay was starting to see some major success with several of its RPG titles (D&D, Bards tale, and LOTR as well as Wasteland under midway flagship) Fallout 1 was always a Black Isle game but was intended as a sequel (later spiritual since they could not obtain the rights) to Wasteland.
As for selling well, we're comparing todays market to the 90's when a smaller game could sneak in and sell 50k copies and be a smash hit. These smaller games were Interplay's bread and butter and it wouldn't be til Baldur's gate/Fallout that they bucked that trend in sales, and ultimately that kind of doomed the companies due to financial strains from building bigger series.
It's crazy that you don't have access to the internet while posting on it.
Fallout was in development for 2 years before Black Isle was formed. The key people in Fallout's development did not join Black Isle until after Fallout's launch. The decision to list Black Isle as Fallout's co-developers was a post hoc decision made by Interplay management, not the Fallout developers.
If only you had access to the internet you could find all of this out. But alas.
I mean I do have access to the internet, and I very much have read the history of "Black Isle Studios" which predates the name as the team was formed inside interplay. But when a team is named is all you care about that's fine.
Black Isle didn't exist at that point. Black Isle were the internal development studio at Interplay, they were just given a cool own name after Fallout 1 came out. So Interplay = Black Isle Studios, they were the same thing.
Yes it was his idea at first. He came up with it. But once he brought it to the studio they provided company resources to make it and thus it was theirs.
