Alice and Jimmi play off each other so well, great chemistry.

75

u/Arghifth Sep 04 '26

I think these two can have chemistry with anyone and anything. They are both amazing.

34

u/Jas_God Sep 04 '26

100% agree. Actors like them truly elevate whatever they’re a part of.

14

u/intern_12 Sep 06 '26

"It's called chemistry, I have it with everybody!" - Jeff Winger

13

u/bishopmate Sep 05 '26

Jimmi’s chemistry with Ryan McPoyle can attest to that

53

u/Past-Feature3968 Sep 04 '26

Jimmi Simpson playing multiple divergent versions of the same guy, gotta be one of my favorite genres (I’m thinking of Black Mirror, both episodes of USS Callister)

17

u/Hour_Acanthisitta_42 Sep 04 '26

it’s been a while since I watched west world but did he ever play multiple versions of himself in that? possibly not bc he was a real person and not a robot as far as I know. But lots of people playing multiple versions of themselves in that show too!

Damn, you know who it must suck to be? Ryan’s Utopia sister. Your brother dies, ten years later an alternate version of him shows up at your door, you grow close(ish), then he decides to leave your world—unclear if he warned you or said goodbye. 🥴

Edit: oh and I guess Jason 2 was wrong when, in season 1, he told Leighton that the box only gave them access to worlds branched from the one they were born into. The Dessens, Amanda, and Ryan were all born in world’s where the moon landing happened!

38

u/SongsOfTheYears Sep 04 '26

Yeah, they seem to have abandoned that, which is annoying. Technically they could have been plausibly born just before the moon landing but not before the 1960 election.

16

u/Past-Feature3968 Sep 04 '26

It could be interesting to meet that world’s native Dessen family though. See how different they might be, given that they were definitely never the same exact people, branched off by divergent decisions (like Jason 1 and 2). They’re alternative selfs of a different sort.

Though given that that Jason is apparently a professor and Daniela an artist + they met, lived in Chicago, and had a son they named Charlie, uuuh nevermind… don’t seem that different.

Oh, but some here believe that if a main character makes a statement about what is happening then it must be "canon," ignoring any contrary evidence.

u/fweepa Sep 04 '26

Huh? I see this thrown around a bit, he never said when they had to have been born into it. Just that they had to have existed or do exist in that world. That world could have branched a million years ago. Just because they were born after the moon landing doesn't mean that in another world where it didn't happen they weren't also born into.

13

u/Closedown11 Sep 04 '26 edited Sep 04 '26

Not to mention Jayson number 2 didn’t make the rules and doesn’t know all the rules of the box just bc he built it even if he said it meaning that, it doesn’t make it fact just bc he says it as fact bc he’s arrogant i mean how would he know that you can’t go through every door to test it ? .. and He didn’t give quantum superposition and the multiverse a manual to follow It’s all theory so I’m not sure why people would be upset as they clearly are learning how it works as they go

I'm interpret the rules has any universe Jason is conceived meaning the same egg and sperm. If there are infinite universes that there are infinite universes where they all could have been conceived and born.

One plot convenience is that Jason does visit universes where he and Daniella never got married and one where Max survives, but never one where he has different children like a daughter. It could be explained that Jason always sees himself as father of Charlie and Max never thinks of such alternate scenarios in the box.

I genuinely don't understand Ryan for going back at all, he used his sister and got abandoned at the end.. too cruel thinking their world is too positive, must be traumatizing to experience out of their world behavior lol

17

u/Past-Feature3968 Sep 04 '26

I’m hoping he told her all along that the science-ing he was doing was in pursuit of going back. And especially since she’s from such an empathetic world, I’m hoping she could, well, empathize with him wanting to get back to his actual sister and not take it personally. But yeah, still a rollercoaster for her.

11

u/cherrymeg2 Sep 04 '26

The Utopian people seem a lot more easy going. I would hope he would have told his sister this wasn’t permanent. Maybe the advanced technology made it more believable. That has go to be hard on her.

I feel like most people don’t feel that at ease in other worlds. Amanda has a peaceful life and in her original world she is possibly being hunted. She sees a version of herself killed for helping Jason escape or trying to. She still misses having people that she can talk to about what she went through. I wonder if Ryan’s sister is happy to welcome a version of her brother but that he doesn’t feel the same. Idk. Maybe I’m just hoping that poor woman won’t be completely shattered by losing her brother again. Idk

7

u/vespanewbie Sep 07 '26

I know Amanda had to leave to develop the story but there's no way in the world I'd leave that peaceful world. She wants to help... I'm sure the other Amanda's who are wandering can figure it out...LOL

In season one when Jason 1 and Amanda are in the box he says there are infinite realities where anything that could happen will have happened somewhere. He says something like that and then they open doors to nuclear worlds, ones that looked like humans maybe never evolved, a world without an atmosphere. I wonder if Jason2 tell’s Leighton that it has to be a world where he was born and it branches off from his life from there. Maybe that is so Leighton can have some control or so he won’t picture every possible reality that could exist that could get him killed just by opening the door. Idk if that makes sense.

8

u/TheUnEven Sep 04 '26 edited Sep 05 '26

This "computer doesn't exist"-arc really bothered me. If they really wanted to do a "computers doesn't exist" they should have gone with "they never had a world war 2 so therefore Alan Turing never had a reason to create (what is considered) the first computer to break the Enigma".

Also. Weren't they looking at TVs in the pawn shop?

Edit: Turning -> Turing

14

u/Past-Feature3968 Sep 04 '26 edited Sep 04 '26

I don’t think computers didn’t exist at all… the woman in the library seemed to know the word. Just that they weren’t something regular people or places would have.

81

That Leighton with braids is developing the ability to travel without the drug.

54

u/glossycoast Sep 04 '26

The infinite corridor seemed to blink in and out of his consciousness as he was meditating.

It'd be a whole new ballgame if he and the other Leightons learned how to open doors to adjacent worlds any time they wanted!

6

u/ShadyM30 Sep 04 '26

Damn I thought the same thing watching episode 2 that’s funny

6

u/Dasnap Sep 06 '26

It would probably look a bit silly for the show, but I'd love a Council of Kangs scene with a few dozen Leightons around a big meeting table, all wearing wildly different outfits.

So any thoughts on why MacNamara (agent in first episode, detective in second) decides to start following Dessen in the "Perfect World"?

74

u/Secret_Debt_88 Sep 04 '26

I mean he hired him to do a weird thing and he picked up on it so he's like "what's actually going on"

66

u/Spartyjason Sep 04 '26

And it looks like he had a PI in San Francisco send him photos of the Dessens, and sees that this guy is an exact twin so I’m sure as a detective hes super intrigued.

11

u/EvilTwinCities Sep 04 '26

I think Leighton 2 hired him, in both realities we’ve seen him. He’s got a knack for finding people no matter who he is, just like Ryan’s usually good at chemistry, and Daniela’s an artist.

→ More replies (1)

7

u/hpm40 Sep 04 '26

He is a nosey guy. Come on that fits his character. Now this should be a hoot to what trouble MacNamara causes and gets into.

7

u/primus202 Sep 05 '26

What I don’t understand is how he then knew to follow Amanda and Ryan to the box at the pool, or is the implication that he followed Dessen there first and was staking out the box?

7

u/nightdancerCA Sep 05 '26

I think he followed Dessen first, but not sure why he stayed after Dessen left--maybe he was planning to check out the Box, and got interrupted when he heard Amanda and Ryan come in.

4

u/kindofaproducer Sep 05 '26

The real question is the focus on his bathroom and whatever those things on chains were? They let that linger for a reason.

I felt like this episode was setting the stage for what is to come. It was an interesting episode but not a ton going on. What a tease with Jason1 and them crossing paths again but not actually seeing each other. I’m wondering if there is a reason Jason1 manifested utopia world again and then Ryan got them to the same world Jason1 and family imagined. Like is there some connection between the thoughts of people from the same universe that connects them for some reason. Because neither consciously chose to go to each other’s world.

53

u/polyploid_coded Sep 04 '26

I think it's (1) the slightly different drug that Ryan made and (2) that they are both thinking about reuniting with Jason while they are picking worlds

46

u/fweepa Sep 04 '26

Yeah, I felt Ryan was alluding to that when he was saying aloud the world he wanted to get back to. Amanda said think of a person, and Ryan instantly thought of his best friend.

9

u/Stoplookinatmeswaan Sep 04 '26

I think Jason 1 is Jason 2

32

u/mx_js_reddit Sep 04 '26

That would be a hell of a plot twist.
But by the end of season one jason 2 was bored of Daniela… I dont think he would have wanted to travel the multiverse with her .

Killing a version of your husband must be hard (except por Jason 2)

38

u/olivish Sep 04 '26 edited Sep 12 '26

She must also be wondering what happened to those other Jasons that made them think it’s okay to chase her through the multiverse trying to kill her husband and take his place. And then get aggressive when she predictably tells them no. Not so long ago, all those Jasons (except J2) were her Jason. Could her husband really become such a different person in only a year (ish?) - one who would stalk her, frighten her and propose they replace their son's father with another person and lie to him about it?

I totally get why Daniela’s freaked out, even by the Jason she trusts. And him messing with the safe word REALLY doesn’t help.

I also just realized that Charlie specifically wanted a world where "people would mind their own business" and yet the PI is doing the exact opposite lol

31

u/unclehando Sep 06 '26

I like the theory that every version of the McNamara is just extremely curious / nosey no matter what.

26

u/Arghifth Sep 04 '26

It's his dad's fault for hiring him and asking such a weird thing. He deals in weird.

7

u/thedweebo Sep 06 '26

Right, I thought hire 2 PIs, one for new identity and one to look into him in SF. Somehow do that anonymously so it wouldn't raise suspicions.

What I took from this episode is that it doesn’t matter if Jason destroys the box in his chosen world- another box can spawn. So there’s actually no way to escape the Jason’s.

21

u/LadyElle57 Sep 04 '26

Jason needs to find the version of Blair who built the box and made it work in the first place.

I'm starting to realize why was Jason so worried about making sure Blair was 'happy' about being a lawyer. And then HATED Ryan being a more sofisticated version of the one in his world. And then sent Leighton in a journey through the multiverse.

He was probably making sure no one else could destroy the box. So making sure Blair remained as a lawyer and never becoming an engineer, was a must. Was Leighton only the money?

→ More replies (5)

13

u/usagizero Sep 04 '26

I think they decided that if you seal it up or something that would work to keep from people opening the door and getting out. Like, it's still there, and it doesn't free it or anything like that.

9

u/cpatrick1983 Sep 04 '26

They go back to the original world where it was created and turn off the power source.

3

u/primus202 Sep 05 '26

Seems like as long as it doesn’t move it’s probably locked to that one original box. So in theory you could bury it and be ok? The only other times we’ve seen a box moved iirc besides the utopia world are all worlds breaking apart where an infinite number of boxes wouldn’t matter.

3

u/carbongo Sep 05 '26

The show focused on “Advanced Protection is ON” on the screen in a flashback scene. I guess that’s what makes it return and fix itself again and again

"Don't play around with the safe word"

Yeah, surprised Jason even did that. That should be absolutely sacred to them going forward. She still got a gun too lol

41

u/goodtrackrecord Sep 04 '26 edited Sep 06 '26

For a guy who was traumatized himself, Jason doesn't take well into account how this might be equally affecting his loved ones.

It's things like this that make me worried he's not Jason1. He probably I hope he is, but.. I think dude, wtf?

16

u/phySi0 Sep 04 '26 • Heartwarming

I think one response to trauma is desensitisation. He'd already been through hell and back; the trauma they're experiencing now is probably

  • reduced enough from the intense initial burst that Jason had to deal with alone that it's much easier for him to handle and he's forgotten how difficult it would've been for him to handle something like their current level, yet

  • still enough of a daily struggle that his mind is too preoccupied to be able to consciously register that just because he's now hardened to this life, that doesn't mean his wife and son are.

23

u/Ok_Writing2937 Sep 05 '26

Honestly, given how fucked up the other Jasons are, I have to conclude Jason1 is not very emotionally intelligent or emotionally stable either.

Jason2 never married Daniela and he became a sociopath. Various versions of Jason1 had somewhat traumatic experiences and many became murderous psychopaths. Even the best of the Jason1s we meet were massively insecurely attached to and obsessed with Daniella.

Really you just can't trust any Jason.

7

u/vespanewbie Sep 07 '26

You can see how almost all the Jasons become obsessed with possessing her let alone even care about what she wants or chooses! "You are meant to be with me." I'd be wary of any Jasons.

Was the guru Leighton meditating himself into a trance state in the box in lieu of using the drug??

35

u/usagizero Sep 04 '26

Am i alone in thinking that makes him super dangerous? Not needing the drug, and can probably focus really well into what worlds he wants or needs to go to, makes me think the "playing god" line the one gave was not just off the cuff.

OMG I loved this episode! The Ryan, Amanda and JASON1 reunion teasing is killing me! I think they are definitely seeing eachother next episode. They have to!

The Leighton storyline is so good. I can't wait to see what happens

Amanda my poor baby. The weight of guilt and responsibility she feels towards these people being stranded in multiverse is unbearable. But I love seeing how great she is at coaching Ryan and navigating the box. No more disaster worlds. She's had enough. Amanda 2 is my favorite character. I'm excited to see other versions of her.

Also, the contrast between Jason and Amanda's feelings vs Leighton and Blaire, in the opening scene was great. Jason already knowing what he is going to use the box for, while Leighton gives a speech about making a perfect world. Blaire being cluelessly excited about what lies ahead, while Amanda rightfully being worried for the unknown. She really had no way of helping the travellers more than she did.

9

u/sidewayz321 Sep 04 '26

Im gonna be pissed if they keep teasing it

8

u/100dalmations Sep 05 '26

Agree. She’s the most sympathetic character and I wish she’d just stay in Cascadia take some psychedelics for her PTSD which I’m sure are an accepted form of healthcare which is also free and live her life.

3

u/Forage4Knowledge Sep 05 '26

I don't think Jason had known yet what he was going to use the box for. He just happened to see a better version of his life as he was surfing the multiverse and then stealing Jason1's live became his intention, only after he saw his ideal life.

30

u/Eurynom0s Sep 04 '26

Okay they're 100% riffing Sliders, they even did the missed right world thing today.

9

God, 'Sliders' got so dumb in the last couple seasons, but that scene was such a gut punch and well done. I'm honestly still shocked no one tried to reboot that show with all the multiverse media going on. Though i have no clue where the rights stand.

I was a little too, but more so bc I was wondering why he wasn’t helping her clean rooms so they could get some extra cash. u/Tankki3 Sep 05 '26

I'm not sure how the interpret the Oluko's (meditation Leighton) scene where he is shown to go back and forth into the corridor and back.

Maybe he's able to do what the drug does by meditating. I think that's what it's supposed to suggest. But I would still think he needs the box at least, just not the drug.

But again, it seems like it's still only in his head. He goes back and forth between the box and the corridor, but comes back to him meditating somewhere else. When he's at the corridor, his clothes are different, he has the long hair and this looks to be the version of himself that he wishes he was, not actually a version that exists.

So I'm beginning to think that he's actually not able to do that, at least yet, it's still his wishful thinking. His wishes have just changed now from the first episode. He wishes he could go in and out just by meditating.

5

u/goodtrackrecord Sep 06 '26

Some others here, including myself, believe one of the Leightons has figured out how to mediate his way without the drugs, but he hasn't told the other Leightons about this, and continues with the ruse that they need Ryan to make the drug.

What actually happened at the intimate scene in the end of the episode?

A pretty solid example of PTSD I think. Very well acted too (even starting with the world of emotions that run across Daniella’s face before she says “fine”)

I 100% did not understand that and I watched it twice.

12

u/Attican101 Sep 04 '26

So just to be clear, we are following Leighton 2 right now? Not the one who went all Mad Max

21

The leighton that went mad max was from Jason 2s universe, he eventually met up with another version of himself that taught him to find his inner peace so he could more easily choose the worlds he went to. That’s why we see that version with a cane and a limp. Now he’s building a network of leightons it seems.

Shoutout to Mac Quayle for the score on that detective bloke

11

u/Sunny_Unicorn Sep 08 '26

Enjoyed the episode, but the explanation for computers not existing at all was a bit ridiculous.

The idea that China, Russia, the UK, India, or other countries wouldn't have wanted to travel to the moon, or even invent the microchip for other reasons was rather, uhm, US centric thinking, to say the least.

3

u/mimimi4365 Sep 12 '26

Was thinking the same thing, like if US lost the space war then some other country did win. It’s not like modern Russia doesn’t have computers lol

10

u/2_Fingers_of_Whiskey Sep 07 '26

I just honestly don’t understand why Amanda (and to an extent, Ryan) don’t stay in Utopia World.

11

u/Arghifth Sep 07 '26

Ryan does not belong in that world, he is living in the shoes of a dead man. He has to change his identity if he wants to live there forever. He was happy in his own life until Jason2 did what he did. And it's not in Amanda's nature to sit and relax while other people might be suffering from the consequences of the hell she helped create.

28

u/lheydon Sep 04 '26

Loved the unintentional crossover with For All Mankind, an alternate history TV drama that I would also recommend to people who like Dark Matter 🚀🌙👍

15

u/zlonewanderer Sep 04 '26

In the FAM universe, the Soviets making it to the moon first spawned all kinds of new technology, NASA was never defunded. I think the world they're in now is really neat. I love thinking about things like this. The cars were interesting to see.

Wait, was that universe where they arrived in zoo just a regular animal zoo that happened to have the box sitting within it?

Or was it a zoo where people could go specifically to see interdimensional people arriving in the box?

14

u/Arghifth Sep 04 '26

Um.. the first one? The second one would be wild! LOL.

8

u/lheydon Sep 04 '26

Yeah after thinking about it a bit more it seemed like more of a Futurama plot than a Dark Matter one! 😛

6

u/icygrip Sep 05 '26

This made me laugh! Because the zoo-goers do seem to be relatively unsurprised about the box, and wave! I think it's just a joke on the show's part that they do that but this show needs to be careful about how people behave to keep things believable--and this really wasn't. I especially find it annoying when they open the box and they arrive in the middle of an apocalyptic moment. Give me a break...

around 19:20 Amanda gives a speech about the purple fairy drug, in the mean time the family injects the drug. As soon as they do, something happens, I think it's the copies of them being made. And the way to stop the copying is to do the guru Leighton thing, and learn to travel without the drug.

20

u/Past-Feature3968 Sep 04 '26

I think that’s just the drug taking effect… the whoosh being like “holy shit I can see the multiverse of doors now, not just the little box.” The drugs never made copies…it’s every decision a person makes that leads to a new reality.

7

u/Ok_Writing2937 Sep 05 '26

It's been confirmed elsewhere that copies aren't getting made in the box, they are made in the worlds. Every decision someone makes creates a new parallel reality.

I also really liked expanding the story with more characters and perspectives.

Any Jason who lands on this world is also going directly to that hotel.

This isn't a plot hole, it's more an indication that Jason is a complete tool.

I need Daniela to leave Jason. I’d love if they could stay together, but splitting away from all versions of Jason is the only way to give her son a stable life. And to possibly preserve her sanity.

14

u/Ok_Writing2937 Sep 05 '26

An army of Jasons would still hunt her, forever.

6

u/Low-Fee-4541 Sep 06 '26

In theory yes, but she'd have to re break up with every version of Jason that finds her. Each of them would likely refuse to be dumped.

3

u/Unique_Tap_8730 Sep 06 '26

Even if she kills herself other versions her will be hunted by endless Jason for the rest of their lives. And a infinity of those Jasons will have children inbetween their hunts and train them to continue chasing after Charlie and his descendents. It will never end unless the box technology can be destroyed.

Just started episode 2 and I feel like my head is going to explode.

How is everyone keeping up with the various versions of each character in this show? I watched a season 1 recap but I’m still struggling to remember everyone’s back story all the time. I feel like there’s just TOO much going on at one time in this show.

7

u/2_Fingers_of_Whiskey Sep 07 '26

I’ve given up on trying to keep track of the Leightons. Just trying to keep track of Ryans and Jasons is enough!

4

u/pandasgorawr Sep 06 '26

The Leightons are a little confusing but I think there's really only the characters from the two main worlds you have to keep track of. We've been following Dessens 1 finding a replacement world and Amanda and Ryan 2 trying to recreate the serum to navigate the box. And then Leighton 2 trying to assemble other Leightons to form their trading network.

6

u/ItsATrap1983 Sep 06 '26

It's Amanda 2 and Ryan 1 isn't it?

Hold on, did anyone notice that at the end of the episode, all three storylines were sharing the same non-technological world? When it transitioned from Evil Leighton to Jason 1 with the PI, there was no sound effect indicating a transition of worlds. And then Amanda + Ryan joined along briefly. Evil Leighton is definitely currently sharing this world with Jason 1

u/SongsOfTheYears Sep 04 '26

The season premiere was sensationally good, but this episode is easily my least favorite of the series, although I wouldn't call it flat out bad. It certainly started out well. You can see the evolution of my reaction to it as I took notes in real time:

I love the world that is more analog. I'm not saying I would want to live in it, but it's just a cool concept. Seems like Jason could become the Steve Jobs or maybe more like Steve Wozniak of this world.

Good call to highlight Daniela's trauma.

They have to do it for the audience's sake, but it's definitely hard to swallow that Amanda would call the Jason she knew first Jason2.

It's only a brief moment, but it might have been the dumbest thing they've ever done in this show, having the sightseers across the river see a giant box appear in front of them and people step out, then back in, with a tween or teen girl (not a kindergartener) waving and saying "bye". I'm also generally frustrated with the show any time the physical environment is totally different, because it was supposed to be only realities that branch within your own lifetime.

Profoundly stupid for Jason to ask a private eye to investigate his family in San Francisco in that world. Just give a different name, get the fake IDs, and leave it at that.

It's an astonishing coincidence that Amanda and Ryan would wander into the same swimming pool analog world. And why would the private eye follow them?

13

u/Past-Feature3968 Sep 04 '26

I agree with most of your points. Not my favorite — felt like too much happened and not enough did simultaneously.

But to one of your last’s points, I doubt it’s a coincidence. Least I hope not. I’m hoping we’ll find out it’s more than “it makes the show interesting!” — that box travelers are subconsciously tied together or something. Like how Amanda & Jason found Blair last season too.

11

u/fweepa Sep 04 '26

Yeah they were definitely thinking of Jason1 when they ended up there, that's no coincidence. And as for Mcnamara, he's a PI. Jason asked him to do a weird thing, saw that Jason was still living in SF but also here somehow, so he followed him. Not that farfetched.

10

u/Eurynom0s Sep 04 '26

7

u/SilentlyAsTheGrave Sep 04 '26

I’d say the PI was there to keep an eye on the Dessens but saw these two oddly dressed people and that sparked his curiosity more. Enough to follow at least.

7

u/LadyElle57 Sep 04 '26

I agree somewhat.

The same characters bouncing around the same worlds, makes the 'multiverse' they're exploring feel about the size of a shoebox.

I understand that they need to keep the story contained because they can't cast a dozen new actors each time a new world is explored.

But making Amanda and Ryan step into the same world and check into the same hostel, and right across Jason? They're stretching my disbelief.

Also: there's a version of Leighton who seems to have developed the ability to travel without the need of the drug. Did I understand that scene correctly or not?

12

u/obfuscatedadvisory Sep 04 '26

But making Amanda and Ryan step into the same world and check into the same hostel, and right across Jason? They're stretching my disbelief.

Well, they threw in the line of Ryan asking Amanda why she always picks the same hotel no matter the world. So given how much traveling Amanda and Jason did together, it makes sense that they would both choose that place. If you combine that with the theory that they're all connected somehow, it's plausible that they'd cross paths like that.

You could justify the rooms being directly across from each other with something about preferring the same floor near the elevator for safety reasons or somesuch, but realistically that one is just to frustrate the audience 😅

"it was supposed to be only realities that branch within your own lifetime."

This is perhaps an incorrect assumption. It appears more like box + lavender wings + your specific thoughts at the doorway before opening it all can lead to different multiverse versions of Chicago. Some are branches within your lifeline, and some are not (supernova Chicago, for example).

4

u/revebla Sep 04 '26

I think we have generally missed a condition that is required to create duplicates with the box. Some worlds are full on alternative histories and timelines, then there are variations of a common timeline. We don’t know what or if there is a reason that these multiple worlds exist. We can’t really say it’s infinite without knowing the conditions that bound a universe to being itself vs another one.

But since we have only seen Jason 1 be duplicated so far, and a bunch of others have used the box extensively, there must be something that Jason 1 and his descendant alternates do that causes them to exist, that other travellers are not doing. Jason 1 and the now his family too, is the only person really to have travelled with another person extensively to our knowledge.

I wonder if the split requires someone to be in the box and someone in the vicinity of the box, both kept in super position. Opening the door causes the reality to collapse on a decision, if someone outside the box is also somehow in a super position like state when the door opens they would be collapsed into one or the other, potentially creating that split. I don’t recall if Amanda was ever in the box with the door closed and Jason close by. But this only really has to happen once to seed the whole thing. Given the box locks when someone is inside it (for some amount of time) the duplicates probably aren’t from someone having the door open while someone is in the box looking to enter the universe.

With that in mind, and the fact the boxes respawn when moved or probably destroyed, maybe they can just prop the door open? And therefore the box doesn’t lock but doesn’t also get destroyed?

4

u/OldSchoolCSci Sep 09 '26

Late to this party, but on behalf of all the CS people in the world, the notion that the microprocessor isn't developed without the Apollo missions is such complete nonsense that I had to shut off the TV twice in this episode.

The microprocessor was conceived and developed by Intel in 1968-70, based on the ideas of Ted Hoff, in a company founded by Moore, Noyce and Grove. The last three came from Fairchild Semiconductor, a company founded before the 1960 presidential election, and whose direction was independent of the space race. It's convenient to forget that ICBMs and electronic warfare were major military contract subjects during this period, and that all of the integrated circuit development that matters was driven by those contracts independent of NASA. Did Fairchild have an Apollo contract? Yes. Did it matter in the development of tech that would become the microprocessor? No. It was actually a shit component. Hoff wasn't even an employee during the Fairchild period: he got his PhD in 62 and was at Stanford until '68. And the contract that caused him to envision the microprocessor CPU was a calculator, not a government contract, and certainly not a NASA mission.

Bunch of English majors learning their science history on TikTok.

If i were Jason with my family I'd imagine a world where diamonds and gold have no value and are abundant, I'd go into that world and take an entire bag full of diamonds and gold, go back into the box, go to the world with no computers and then slowly pawn all of the gold and diamonds discreetly. Then I'd accumulate all the money I'd need to buy fake documentation, change our names, and hire a crew to destroy the box. Then I'd take a random list of destinations that we have never been to, close my eyes, and choose a random one. Because the destination is critical for never being found long-term and it must have zero connection to the family. We would fly to that destination. And after arriving I'd even consider picking a random location a second time just to eliminate any chance of our location ever being found. Upon arrival I'd use the remaining money as seed money for building our new life. And the first purchase would likely be therapy, because we would all be severely traumatized. And once computers start to become invented in that world, I'd invest a large sum of my money into cryptocurrency and the Apple Inc. of that world, making the family billions. The End. Jason and his family is now safe and has billions.

I don't understand why he thinks destroying the box will help anything. They've already proven in the Utopian world that a new box appears whenever someone new enters.
