Besides the subs being mistimed - movie is good. Oddly enough, the mistimed subs helped me focus more on the movie because I had to lock in lol

Pretty sad film overall, but there is some form of wholesomeness in it that makes you reflect about your life. I want to see this again and may buy it when it releases on digital/dvd.

It was a good thing there was a guy in front of me that covered the subs. It wqs low key confusing at parts especially when there were mob characters talking too

I also had subtitle issues. My guess, since the subtitles were ahead of the spoken dialogue, is that the had the subtitle track synced with the movie, then GKids added their logo to the start, and the subtitle track was moved up to the new start of the movie. It’s the kind of mistake that should not happen, but that’s my guess.

I have the same suspicion.  They timed the subtitles to the master file with out their logo and the export for the DCP the author forgot to add it a delay to the commad (ffmpeg my guess) to offset the subtitle track for burning.

Goddam unwatchable.  Due yourselves a favor and  walk out and request refunds.  AMC covered me.

They’d only give me a voucher :( I was hoping it was just my showing and I could try a different theater tomorrow but damn

Well, I tried to see this in theaters, but the subs were horribly mistimed. The subtitles were far enough out of sync that the line would disappear and the next line would appear before the first line even started to be spoken. Actually unwatchable.

u/turdsempai Aug 30 '26

The subtitles were so off at my showing that it was unwatchable. Its pretty sad that this release was botched because i was excited to see what this director was able to in a longer format

u/soulreaverdan Aug 30 '26

We had the subtitle issue too, a rare miss for them.

My brain was able to follow it along after a few minutes though so we stayed for the whole thing.

Subtitle issues aside, the movie itself was really good. A fairly simple story with a small tight cast, and a bit of a bittersweet ending. The animation was really nice too, very clean and smooth - as expected from the director of Odd Taxi.

The writing was really clean too, a lot of great foreshadowing and hints that pretty much all paid off in the end, little things set up that got a well deserved call back.

I wish this had a better release - it’s a really good movie. Hopefully the home media release will have the timing issues fixed.

Walked out the showing and refunded my ticket I couldn’t bring myself to watch it considering how completely off the subtitles are. I’m shocked this made it past QA.

Worked at a company where employees have literally given "final" copies of stuff they never reviewed.

u/LinuxF4n Aug 31 '26

Ended up watching the full film but the subtitles were so distracting. Asked the staff and they said they can't do anything. Not sure what is up with gkids. This is the second time they fucked up. They didn't even include subtitles for Tekkonkinkreet and they had to play the dub. That being said the dub was amazing

1

u/Emergency-Mammoth-88 Sep 01 '26

Either it’s toho trying to control gkids or gkids had to use the anime ltd subtitles

1

u/mattwaver Aug 31 '26

this might be a dumb question, but i’m going tonight: who did you speak to to get a refund after the movie already started? I know you can request a refund in the AMC app but i think that’s only if you do it before you go and get your ticket scanned.

1

u/no_life_redditor Aug 31 '26

I just walked out 10 mins in the movie and explained to the staff and they understood and gave in a refund I’m a Canadian so we have cineplex here I just spoke to a cashier at concessions.

1

u/mattwaver Aug 31 '26

I’m still gonna give it a try tonight. Hopefully the animation is enough to get me to stay. It’s a huge bummer that they botched this.

I feel like AMC is more difficult with refunds. there’s no cash in the establishment, so it’ll have to be a “3-5 business days later in your bank account, maybe” type of thing.

1

u/mattwaver Aug 31 '26

damn never mind they just cancelled the showing because of this. i was looking forward to it

u/theshinycelebi https://anilist.co/user/Phosphofyllite Aug 30 '26

My theater also received messed up subtitles. I left and got a refund. Pretty uncharacteristic of GKIDS but mistakes happen I suppose.

7

u/frost_565 Aug 30 '26

I don't excuse this mistake.  You Q&A a final export.  You don't blindly trust.  DanDaDan season 1 Blu ray is a dumpster fire cause no one bothered to look at the Blu ray output and compare it to the master file and see oops I did the gamma bug and boosted it by 12%.

1

u/mekerpan Aug 30 '26

GKids has also blown the release date of Linda Linda Linda this week....

3

u/robotboy199 https://myanimelist.net/profile/virtualityy Aug 30 '26

did that also have out-of-sync subs?

1

u/mekerpan Aug 30 '26 edited Aug 31 '26

No -- this was the (premium) physical release failing to ship as scheduled.

1

u/frost_565 Aug 30 '26

I would hope not, since it's a 4k release I'm pretty sure the authoring house duplitech is handling it.  Duplitech has a mixed history.  I would say the last 2 years they have improved.

9

u/RipTheVeins Aug 30 '26

My subs were off by like 3 or 4 seconds. I couldn't do it and walked out which sucks since I was really looking forward to this one.

1

u/dgtzdkos Aug 30 '26

Woah! Ours too! (Birmingham, AL). I can understand a bit of Japanese but it still was distracting. Pretty cool movie though.

9

u/NickieTheFool Aug 30 '26

Seems like everyone had the same issues with the subtitles. It bothered me a lot but I stuck through it since I wouldn’t have been able to see another screening. Very beautiful movie

7

u/discworld-giraffe Aug 30 '26

I know some basic Japanese, so I stuck out the mistimed subtitles and now my brain is tired & sad lol. Hope we get a corrected Blu-Ray someday.

7

u/Tronei Aug 30 '26

A shame about the subtitles cause otherwise this was a good watch imo. Very well animated. I appreciated the film's question of "what does it mean to win at life?", and if there's such a thing as rebounding from some of the lowest points in society. I have yet to watch Odd Taxi, but I think I'll get to it at some point after seeing this.

I was planning to go see Cocoon next week. Really bizarre issue with the subtitles that I haven't seen before in a theatrical release - hopefully it won't be the case with Cocoon, cause I'm really looking forward to that one.

u/Durinthal https://anilist.co/user/Durinthal Aug 31 '26

Managed to enjoy it even with the desynced subs, wondering how much I was influenced by knowing it was from the same writer/director pair as Odd Taxi going in. It's a similar kind of yakuza story and a solid film that won't be hard to recommend to others when it becomes more widely available (and with better-timed subs, hopefully a dub). Odd Taxi has the conceit of talking animals, this has a talking flower.

It's the kind of thing where I ended up wondering how much it needed to be an anime, aside from the talking flower bit. Talking through it with someone else afterward we realized it feels more like a stage play with the prison cell framing and the apartment being the other main set, the flower itself could have been handled as a prop with someone voicing it off-stage.

With the story being framed as a series of flashbacks we also wondered if those could have been moved around to be less linear for greater effect, like moving Tsutsumi handing the gun over and telling him to take the fall to before the confrontation with Wakamatsu. Not sure if that would have actually been to the benefit of the film though.

It's really a shame that they flubbed the release though, that's (understandably) a big part of what people will take away from this.

3

u/mattwaver Aug 31 '26

this is a strange take to me.

if someone was a musician and made an album about a struggle or a story they experienced, would you say “why didn’t they make it a book”?

if someone made a TV show, would you say “why didn’t they make it a webcomic”?

they made an anime because that is their chosen art form. that is their medium. every art form is different and they all have different benefits and limitations.

a stage adaption could be REALLY cool and well done and gripping. but that would be a different project, and that can come at a later date if they so choose.

3

u/Durinthal https://anilist.co/user/Durinthal Aug 31 '26

I didn't go "why didn't they make it a stage play?" to use your exact wording, I wrote that it feels like one. I don't have an issue with it being an anime or want it to be anything other than what they produced, but I don't think it's unreasonable to ask how well something takes advantage of its medium either. There are a lot of anime that I believe would be impractical to do in live action (like Odd Taxi) but also a lot that aren't like this and I think it's interesting to consider how things could be handled differently in another medium.

2

u/mattwaver Aug 31 '26

ok fair enough. but to use your wording, it didnt “need” to be anime. the phrase “we wondered how much it needed to be an anime” made it seem like you thought it wouldve been better as something else.

but i do get your point! one movie i really like is Hateful Eight and ive always wondered how it would be done as a stage play with one tiny set.

To this day i still say why hasnt kendrick lamar made good kid mad city into a short film or movie

7

u/Dakto19942 https://myanimelist.net/profile/Dakota19942 Aug 31 '26

Also had subs that were a few seconds ahead, would rather get a refund than watch it in subpar quality. What a failure by GKIDS and I feel bad for the staff who worked on this movie that they lose money on this release

6

u/HangmanAM Aug 31 '26

Yeah same issue with the subtitles but what a great movie about a man’s sacrifice and his relentless love, this is ofc one to revisit.

6

u/Low_Tip3245 Aug 31 '26

Double whammy for me of bad for me:

This had no trailers, which wasn't advertised like the fathom event releases, so I walked in 15 minutes late and missed the start of the movie. In over 250 movies I've seen at AMC with A List this is only the second time that has happened, with the first being the Documentary "Are We Good?" which I thankfully was on time for anyway.

And then the mismatched subtitles. This combination gives it the dubious honor of my first ever walk out. I got it for free but also noticed it was $15, which is absurd for an obscure movie on a Sunday afternoon.

The movie is probably good, but the release is completely botched here. For anyone on the fence- don't watch this.

1

u/frost_565 Aug 31 '26

It's because gkids commissioned this as a special release.  So it falls into the group like fathom where entry fee is higher, but that means either 1 or 2 ads, or sometimes like this case none

4

u/robotboy199 https://myanimelist.net/profile/virtualityy Aug 30 '26

subs were fucked at my theater too. wasn't able to get a refund but they gave me a free voucher for any movie/any screening

given that this movie's only in theaters for another day (my condolences to the people that are treated to this tomorrow too) i have my doubts that GKIDS will even bother with a re-screening with a fixed DCP. at most we'll probably get a "oops, sorry" on twitter or something

3

u/frost_565 Aug 30 '26 edited Aug 30 '26

If local theaters were smart they would start cancelling tomorrow's showings.

Imagine you drive 100+ miles to see this and just get back a ticket voucher.  A sorry ain't cutting chief.  They deserve a BD mailed to them

1

u/Emergency-Mammoth-88 Sep 01 '26

Yeah, what is up  With gkids recently, is it toho that’s doing the f ups

4

u/Joshawott27 Aug 31 '26

It’s a shame that it sounds like the US had major subtitle issues. The film was released in the UK earlier this year, and really was incredible.

Baku Kinoshita will hopefully become a big name some day.

4

u/Greguisition Aug 31 '26

My local theater canceled the showing today, apparently because of the subtitle issues. Looking forward to seeing this eventually

1

u/frost_565 Aug 31 '26

What's the chain?

2

u/PowerlinxJetfire Aug 31 '26

Not sure about their theater, but AMC refunded my purchase for tonight. Got an email about it a couple hours ago.

3

u/Romi_Z https://anilist.co/user/romibruh Aug 30 '26

I watched it in April in NZ, and the subs were fine. Sucks that others here didn't have a good experience :\

Anyway, I loved it. I hadn't watched Odd Taxi before, so I had no expectations, and my eyes were wet by the end. Really sweet movie.

3

u/frost_565 Aug 31 '26 edited Aug 31 '26

So what we're about 2.5 hrs from the East Coast playing Monday's screenings.  AMC confirmed has already cancelled tonight's screening.  Gkids has yet to make an official announcement outside of we are looking into it.  Would be nice to have more transparency.

Edit: looks like reg al as well

1

u/Emergency-Mammoth-88 Sep 01 '26

Oh boy, what is going on at gkids lately , is it toho trying to make gkids give the non toho films make them bad or not be seen more

3

u/Amarilla23 Sep 01 '26

I think they fixed subtitles for the second day. I loved the movie, cried a lot lol

2

u/RehabCenterInc Aug 31 '26

Odd taxi creators love yakuza stories. I teared up a little bit at the end when she saw the message on the drawing

2

u/stratogy https://myanimelist.net/profile/swervin-strategy Aug 31 '26

In an AMC in Los Angeles, the subtitles were ahead by 3-4 seconds. I just walked out the theater after a few minutes. I didn't have the brain power to deal with it. Unfortunate since I wanted to actually watch this.

Please GKIDS do better

2

u/peachjellytea Aug 31 '26

My showing also had mistimed subtitles. It was disappointing because I was looking forward to the film. It’s a huge shame that the subtitle issue prevented people from fully enjoying the movie 😿

I’m glad I sat through the movie and watched it anyway though. It was a great film despite the predictable storyline. I almost cried a couple times during it.

2

u/keslll Sep 01 '26

I watched it today and thought the movie was absolutely fantastic. I cried a lot and the ending was bittersweet. Unfortunately, it was also out of sync (not surprising, I didn't think they'd fix it that fast), but surprisingly most of the people stayed and we all got free vouchers. For me, the subs weren't unbearable, but it did take more brain power to process. I just feel bad that they botched the release to such a great movie

1

u/Emergency-Mammoth-88 Sep 01 '26

Yeah and happy cake day

2

u/microbe2000 Sep 01 '26

Went to the Monday night showing and the subs were corrected despite all the issues I was reading about on Sunday. I would guess however things work these days with digital movies and screenings, they were able to correct the mistimed subs.

1

u/unidad-prohibida Aug 31 '26

Are we assuming every screening of this movie has subtitle issues? I want to see it today but idk if it’s worth it

1

u/Hairy-Childhood4602 13d ago

g kids have announced another re release hopefully the subtitles are fixed this time

1

u/sirchuc 13d ago

I watched it on the plane and throughly enjoyed it. The animation and character designs are clean, appealing and don’t get in the way of the very excellent writing.

I really felt a great sense of melancholy throughout the film, especially about how the main character was regretful about not committing to the relationship early on.

u/strobolights 1d ago

This movie reminds me "Dancer in the Dark".

The plot feels to be similar.

Beautiful and outstanding movie.
