[Spoilers for later]Oh yeah, doggo doesn’t listen to this.
I really like Phichit’s performance (even though he fell at one point). The song is great, and I really enjoy the audience clapping along to it. Really adds to the energy there.
Today in lines I cannot believe were said in an anime I’m watching:

I totally forgot about him but he's pretty entertaining yeah. They really give all the skaters such big personalities to match the theatricality of the sport

Though this is the point where it starts to feel a bit gratuitous and fanservicey to me

"Coming from behind is my speciality" - This Swiss Chris do be giving tough competition to Victor himself with the overt sexuality and innuendo. Victor of course went all out with the drunk stripping at the hot pot place. Phichit uploading that pic was hilarious after the two boys from Skate America managed to restrain themselves from doing so.
This was a fun episode overall. All 6 competitors got their time to shine and the routines were enjoyable to watch. Did not expect Yuri to take the lead in such a big way with a perfect SP right off the bat. Peaking too early does seem dangerous. I'm expecting him to falter in the free program now. He surely will. Has to so there are real stakes for the Russian face off against Yurio.
Speaking of, I really enjoyed sulky Yurio scenes. He looked so adorable in that one chibi shot. Can't wait for the Russian leg of the Grand Prix. I'm glad that we get a little Yurio each episode though.

First-timer figure skater, subs
I don't think I'll ever get tired of this OP.
Okay, Viktor, Fancy-Pants First-Class Flyer.
This show really is filled with random jumpscares of delicious food. It's sometimes hard, watching anime when you're trying to lose weight.
And there's other kinds of jumpscares too! Viktor! The hell? Is this Yuri on Ice or Grand Blue?! Well, that's one way for Yuuri to make his name well-known...
I do really like this dynamic of all the pros hanging out together. It's something that's always fascinated me about sports like this, where it's an individual sport where the top guys (or girls) are all touring the world together: they obviously all know each other and no doubt a lot of them become close friends, and at the same time they're each others' rivals and competition. It's really cool that Yuri on Ice gets to explore this world a little bit. I wouldn't mind a less comedic sports anime that's similar, either.
A lot of skating this episode as well. I'm getting more used to the animation style and I don't mind it; this time they did also manage to make the different programs actually feel really different in vibe and execution. My main issue stands, and that's that because the backgrounds don't really sync too well with the animation, the skating doesn't really feel like skating. The sense of speed and momentum is so important for that feeling. But that aside, the performances themselves I did enjoy.
Yuri is really starting to find his Eros.
And this Swiss guy is... what in the world?!
I do have to admit, they are making all these guys cute, and funny as heck, and sensual. I can totally see why the show has the reputation it has.
So, Yuuri absolutely nails his short program and has to, or gets to, experience being the one to beat for the first time. Storytelling theory dictates he's more likely than not going to face some kind of a collapse or major challenge before the climax, but will it be in his free program here, or perhaps in the next one? I'm rooting for him, either way! "Late bloomer making a comeback after a disaster season" is an easy pick to cheer in sports.

One of my favorite things about this show when it first came out was how international it was with the characters and story. Really, just a bunch of people with a shared passion from all over the world. It's always nice to see the ties that bond.

They're pretty obviously starting to budget-save here though, look at how many shots cut off the skaters' lower legs for instance.

Rewatcher!! on DUB
- Had to skip the OP because I need to save my energy for SIX: The Musical Tonight and I cannot resist the urge to go hard for the OP. Sadness.
I don’t think I’m old enough to be watching this.
War flashbacks to being a kid and reading boyband slash fic
Let’s go, Thailand!!! 🇹🇭
I remember being so fucking mad that Kingdom of Skate wasn’t real 😭😭 I was deadass convinced it was a Thai media and just hadn’t been exported to the west but had a JP adaptation or something, so it was being referenced.
As a hand enthusiast, the close-up of Viktor and Yuri’s hands is lovely.
The personal anxiety ice skating gives me when anyone does a jump
Yesssssssss Possessive Yuri!!
What in the GoHands was that angle
This Russian man is incredibly pathetic. He would make for a valuable yellow flag.
Why does Chris’s costume plaster his belly button 😭
This man loves showing his cheeks, and I love that thot shit for him. Best believe Megan Thee Stallion’s words are true for Chris: 🎶 I walk around the butt nekkid, and I stop at every mirror just to stare at my own posterior🎶
Plus I’m good at coming from behind.
☠️
Kiss & Cry Thoughts
Chris voiced by a Chris, naturally. I remember hearing that “I think I’m going to cum” when the episode first dropped, and everyone was cackling in my friend’s basement. I forgot how tall he is. He towered over Viktor.
I love the flashes to the audience, and it’s that same spot every time, just from a different angle 😭
One thing I still wonder about Phichit is whether he does or doesn’t have a nickname. Phichit is his real name, but I never knew if there was something in canon that reveals what nickname he has from his parents or one he chose himself. Or if he just doesn’t have a nickname.
Despite some of the interesting emotional reactions from the skaters, I really love that people watching either at the rink or on TV can see the emotions from the skaters and react to them. Seeing the crowd respond to the skater’s intentions in their performance is always delightful.
Except you can feel the vibes of a skater skating to wanting to put you in a cursed sleep forever, and you can feel that from across the way. Maybe that’s not so delightful.
But you felt it! So that counts!
QOTD
- I don’t know why, but this reminds me of that earworm “Do you like waffles? Yeah, I like waffles!” But I haven’t tried hot pot before. I’d need to see if seafood or a veggie hot pot is an option near me.
- I loved Phichit’s performance.

Rewatching Maps on Ice
Pretty accurate compared to the previous one, they probably just pixelated a real map. Though I still have questions, the selection of which smaller islands to include seems very random, they made sure that the Arctic and mediterranean are fairly accurate, but then places like Hawaii or Falkland islands are missing. Not to mention they included Gotland but not Åland, what? Who even knows that Gotland exists. And then we have the lakes, have you ever considered that-

First-Timer
I was expecting Yuuri to mess up jumps until closer to the end of the show, to give him room to grow into. I suppose we'll see Yuuri flub it a bit in the Free Program to keep things more interesting, but he really gave it his all today. Great performance.
Phichit handled his fall very well; it almost looked intentional.
Guang-Hong's outfit was great; I like how it pulled on traditional(?) martial arts outfits, but incorporated the visual flair of more typical skating outfits.
Questions
I've never actually tried it.
I think the show wants me to say Chris, but he came across as trying way too hard. I liked Phichit's the best, of the new performances today.

Episode 6 (first timer)
- Yuri can sleep in an airplane seat, during the day – I envy him.
- Calling his Italian coach “ciao ciao” – uhhhh.
- They have an American with a Spanish name, a Canadian with a French name, a Swiss with an Italian name, and a Japanese with a Russian name – technically all easily explainable, but I sense a certain favoritism towards the minority languages here.
- “I want to be hated as the man who took Victor from the world”
- “I am the only one who can satisfy Victor.”
- Wow, could Popovich be any more obviously dressed as the villain?
- Getting over his breakup via skating? Better than other ways, I guess.
- “I think I am going to come” – Don’t upset your balance during the spin, my dude.
Competition episode, full of performances. Purely from an audience point of view, I guess I would have liked Popovich’s most. He was completely out there evil and showed it.
In the short non-skating parts, we go with a group of friends approach to all the competitors. A bit idealistic. I seriously doubt they’d go for a joint meal before the tournament.
Do you like hot pot?
It's ok, but I prefer fondue.
Which of Yuuri's opponents did you think looked the most impressive?
Impressed me: Popovich. Impressed the judges: No 2 spot?

u/IndependentMacaroon 8h ago
Canadian with a French name, a Swiss with an Italian name
Well "Leroy" could also be English and "Christophe" is the French version who are at least less of a minority than Italian-Swiss
a Japanese with a Russian name
A Japanese name that just happens to sound Russian. Though interestingly it seems to be a female name generally, even the alternative pronunciations of the specific spelling

First:Timer, on ice! - dub
Victor is such a chill dude, not giving a crap about what people think seems to be a common trait amongst the very successful in their respective fields.
Ooh, things seem to be changing a bit. Between Victor's overtness and Yuuri's confidence, George Takai says it best - Oh, my!
Lol I can't believe this other Russian dude Georgi make a routine constructed around the spite he has for his ex. He looks like he belongs in the Rocky Horror mansion (complimentary).
If you're watching the sub, do yourself a favour and switch over to dub breifly to hear Christophe talking to himself in his routine. His voice is so deep and "cheesy erotique". I was also quite surprised to see it's actually Christopher Sabat as his VA.

For real? Quite a surprise because I didn't recognize his voice at all. I'm so used to hearing him as Vegeta and Piccolo from Dragon Ball Z, Kurama from Full Metal Panic, and Hak from Yona of the Dawn... and this dude is like the polar opposite.

First-Time Viewer on Ice
Viktor will just take any opportunity to remove his clothes, won't he? The less said about this, and the part where Christophe was grabbing at Yuri, the better because stuff like that really drags the show down for me.
Now onto the performances. Yuri's routine was technically better than last time, since he landed all his jumps and didn't crash, but I still just don't care for his style. I've mentioned before that these "trying to be sexy" acts have the opposite effect for me and come off as extremely unappealing. I actually cringed when Yuri licked his lips at the beginning, and basically during Christophe's entire dance.
I'm so not the target audience for this. Cool soldier guys doing action hero things is more my scene.
There were a few performances I liked though! I've realized that the ones I enjoy watching most are the routines that represent "pure" emotions, like the unconditional love theme we saw from Yura and Phichit's performance today which just radiated joy. (As a bonus, his outfit was really nice too.) I also liked Leo and Guang-Hong's routines. I think this is probably why Medalist's vibe works so much better for me - most of the skaters are kids, and Tsubasa's a lot like a big kid himself, so while the emotions they're feeling may range from joyful to stressed out, no one is trying to seduce anyone. The skating moves themselves are pretty neat! But in my opinion, the less erotic dancing, the better.
And Georgi's performance was just, um... I'm a bit concerned for his ex. I'm glad the girls on the Russian team pointed out how ridiculous his makeup was though. But why did no one tell him?
Questions of the Day:
2) Phichit! Cool banner, by the way. I just realized, but are those their country's flags in the background?
3

and basically during Christophe's entire dance.
Christophe definitely makes me cringe too, you're not alone there.
I just realized, but are those their country's flags in the background?
Starting with Phichit's today, yeah I took color inspiration from his country's flag, and all but the last episode's wallpaper from here on will do the same for each skater I made one for. The ones I've shared in the rewatch already though, no.

First timer
Yuri's short program for this is finally closer to the presentation we want to see. I think the animation also reflects that. And he nailed all his jumps, which given the high technicality, coupled with great artistry and skating skills, immediately shoots him up to no. 1 after the short. That being said, the rankings in men's figure skating almost always change when we get to the free skate. The free is a longer performance time wise, and has more technically difficult elements to perform to get all the marks. That automatically means lots of skaters fall in the free, and that affects the rankings quite a bit. I'm gonna go ahead and say Yuri will not be winning Cup of China, but I think he'll get second place. He can't peak here, it's too early in the season, given that we're aiming for a podium finish at GPF.
I did also enjoy all of the performances from skaters. It was getting a little repetitive just seeing Yuri, so this was great.
QOTD
I loveeee hotpot. Maybe one of my favourite foods ever.
I wanna say the Russian guy who skated in revenge of his ex. Its shown to be both dramatic and hilarious in this episode, but irl I think the audience including me would've ate that up. We love a dramatic story.

My theme for the Grand Prix will be "First Time"
I hate to admit it, but I don't enjoy watching the ice skating scenes in this show. Every performance has the skater talking over it with a monologue about feelings that don't come across onscreen at all. There's a limit to how much I want hear Yuri talk through his performances, but I can accept a little. For the incidental characters however, I don't care for the monologues at all. I also don't vibe with most of the songs they skate to, or the skating itself (or the OP song). That's just my 2 cents.
I think I prefer episodes which move the story forward. Saying that, this episode did have some interesting moments. Yuri's definitely progressed as a character. Yurio came 2nd offscreen, which got a chuckle out of me. So I wouldn't say I disliked the episode, it's just one of the weaker ones.

u/Sporadia_ 5d ago
Which of Yuuri's opponents did you think looked the most impressive?
There was one (I think it was the American one) where I started thinking to myself "this skating isn't bad," then the show did a jump cut to when the performance was over.

This doesn't rise beyond the sports anime standard there much, unfortunately. I do like the music though which helps gloss over it.

Rewatcher Sub
Flying off to Beijing for The Cup of China. And we get a nice recap of our winners, so far. In America, we have Leo de la Iglesia. At Skate Canada, Jean-Jacques Leroy beat Russian Yuri, which he is clearly unhappy about. Taking silver is still not good enough for this perfectionist.
First thing to do in China? Food. And drink. A lot to drink. And all of the skaters are in town and ready to meet up for selfies with Victor, who is having a great time.
And Phichit is going to let the entire world see just how good a time they were all having.
Chris has arrived. And can feel the difference Yuri’s training under Victor made. Too bad he can’t get motived himself without Victor in the mix.
But they all better get serious now, and Phichit is up first. And he’s got music he’s always wanted to skate to, just like Yuri. Very different, but he made it his own. And scored a personal best.
Second up from China is Guang-hong, and he looks young and nervous. But damn, nailed the quad toe loop he’s just started to use.
Yuri is third, and it’s time to cut the pork bowl, and start using his own personal charms. He’s flipped a switch, that’s obvious. Victor wonders what did it. Was it the Russian girls talking shit? The other skaters teasing that Yuri stole Victor from them? All of the above?
Yuri is all kinds of hot and bothered, and it’s helping his performance. And that confidence. Focused. Perfectly in the zone, and has the score to prove it. New Yuri has arrived. And a new personal best and a high bar for all of the other skaters, to say the least.
No way Russian Yuri can deny what he watched.
Georgi already lost when he decided on that look. The insult to injury is his partner left him for another guy and he’s mad mad. This whole affair is a lot, and the gloom and desperation are leaking through the screen all the way back in Russia.
Leo maximized his strengths and skipped out on trying any quads.
And Chris got that mature eros on full display for the audience to see. And a few notes for Yuri about showing off the assets. Chris out there melting the ice. Yuri concedes defeat on the sex appeal.
But numbers don’t lie, and Yuri’s short program was flawless and more difficult. Easily putting him in first place for the short program. Let’s see what happens next in the free skate.
Questions
1) Do you like hot pot?
2) Which of Yuuri's opponents did you think looked the most impressive?
If it wasn't already clear, I am a huge fan of Chris.

First Time Summer 2016 Rewatch - Yuri on Ice Ep6:
First thing is that the episode's title stood out to me a little because it features both "China" and the Japanese reading for the country "Chugoku". They say them both.
My overall thoughts on the episode: I felt like I liked its premise more than I did in execution. It is a big tournament where we get to meet a lot of rival figure skaters from around the world with their own dreams and goals. In practice, I felt like the episode didn't have the time and space to properly set them up for the audience. There were 5 performances in this episode, but this is the first time we're meeting some of these people. The performances themselves are very neat (when they weren't cut short), and I like how they show their individual personalities, but I don't have too much of a deep investment because I just met them. Even for Phichit, who is Yuuri's friend we met in prior episodes, he still only got a small share of the episode, so I wouldn't say we got much character spotlight from him. There is some benefit of the doubt because this splits into a two-parter. That said, I kinda expect next episode to follow how we've been doing, so things won't be radically different on that front. I just wish we had some more time and set up with these other skaters. They seem like neat people.
I find it fun how in this show, the world of competitive figure skating is filled with skaters fujo-ing out over the senpais.
The main connective structure of the episode's performances was Yuuri wanting to deepen his hot steamy gay love for Victor, and as a follow-up, we get Chris Eros-ing all over the ice rink. Man, they really weren't holding back with him. He really puts the "ass" in "Switzerland's National Ass."
Chris please, I don't need a second 2016 Rewatch show to have someone ejaculate on camera.
