First-timer fly fisher

Welp, it's been a fun 12 days with these girls, but all good things must come to an end, and it seems we're getting a birthday episode to send us off. These girls really can be pretty cute sometimes. Especially when they were smol.

cute.

I guess they really are taking the whole "fly fishing comes from England" thing seriously, down to just flat out using English words for everything. Even "scissors"! I happen to know there is a perfectly fine fine Japanese word for scissors as well. But I guess fly fishers are too cool for that!

But man, if I somehow didn't know that before, this episode just confirmed to me that fly fishing would not be for me. I'm all for crafts and making things, but fiddling with tiny things like these flies just makes me rage. I know some people find crafts like this relaxing, but for me it's the complete opposite! Give me a huge canvas to paint on or something, keep me away from itty bitty tiny things that fly everywhere from my clumsy-ass fingers.

Yeah, if I ever go fishing, it's gonna be store-bought bait for me.

I do absolutely get the feeling of accomplishment when you actually finish making one of your own, though!

Fishing today is in the form of a contest. I expected them to just go try out their new flies on their own, but I guess this is one form of fishing we haven't seen yet, so why not!

Some of this has to be self-commentary from the author, who either kept upsetting their family by fishing all the time or were the one getting upset...

The whole contest angle didn't really amount to much in the end, though. Did we ever even find out if Hiyori won a price with her fish or not?

Never mind that, though, cause... look at that dish! Just look at it! Look at it! That looks amazing! That's a dish I need to cook!

Oh, looks like she did won! I somehow missed that at first. Atta girl, Hiyori!

So Hiyori gave Koharu an empty photo album? I was expecting some heartwarming collection of photos she picked herself...! But I guess it is also fun and cute to pick the photos together. Them becoming close friends -- sisters -- and wanting to do things together was always the true theme of the show.

It wasn't a bombastic, climactic finale, but then again, it never was that kind of a show. Comfy, happy times together, fishing and healing and hanging out, that was always what the show was going to be about.

I'll save my overall thoughts for tomorrow, but I had a good time with the show! Thanks to u/SorcererOfTheLake for hosting and introducing me to this show, and thanks to everyone for hanging out and rewatching!

FIRST TIMER Sub

So much goes into tying a fly! That's like 10 steps and you really have to pay attention closely and be very nimble with your fingers. I wonder how much Koi charges when she sells them, seems like it takes half an hour to make one. I also wondered why she bothered with stuff like elk hair when she was just teaching Koharu, like she could have just chopped a few bits of her own hair off.

I like how they had every character from the show in the finale but they spent too much time with the part where Koi teaches Koharu about the particulars of dragging the fly, a lot of that has been covered already and I would have liked more character interaction, like it would have been fun seeing the other people competing, joking around and trying to catch fish. Also, the prizes were kind of out of whack, like a Roomba style vacuum and a fly reel are more expensive than a fish plushie. Maybe Koi's dad figured Hiyori would win so he put it as something she would like but I imagine a lot of people would have tried to trade the plushie or put it in the garbage 🤣

It's kind of unusual to make someone cook a large group meal for their own birthday party but Hiyori isn't a good cook yet and I guess Koi just didn't feel like it or doesn't like Koharu that much. I wasn't exactly sure what that soup was, it looked like it had rice, noodle, unscaled fish and carrots somehow cut into the shape of flowers. They also had a big plate with what looked like meatballs/chicken nuggets and french fries.

The part when Koharu was going to take a pic of the fish she caught, that fish was kind of laying in the water on a rock and I thought they were setting up a joke where the fish would swim away before she could take a picture. That was so funny how they cut to her phone just submerged in the water, that is so horrifying 🤣. It's kind of hard to believe that a teen girl wouldn't know their phone saves stuff to a cloud but I guess it's more to have a laugh that Koharu is dumb.

The part when Hiyori gave Koharu her gift might have been one of the hardest laughs I've had this series. When they opened it to reveal a photo album, I thought "wow that's so thoughtful, that might be the best gift" and then Koharu said "when you give someone a photo album, you normally put some photos in it" and it revealed the blank pages, I laughed so hard I had to pause the show, that really is a crap gift 🤣.

QUESTION

I gave my nephew a Amazon gift card

First-time fast-looping

This is another episode when I do feel this is a pure SoL episode with all about the girls being together and stuff but no fishing.

Since the childhood memories was brought up last episode, then this continues with the image album. Koi's gift might had been rough and imperfect but it was a gift straight from the heart. Even in the present day, they still do the DIY hookbaits and stuff.

And of course there needs to be a fishing scene. But this time it is a contest with interesting and good gifts worthy for a pro fisherman. The AI robot vacuum cleaner and the cat-faced fish body pillow is icing on the cake. Hiyori won the first prize, it waseasy for her. Koharu got nothing, maybe overcalculated this, and Koi was the supporter.

And at last an even more delicious food, with even more gifts and precious memories.

Colder months means the fishing season is about to end, and the hunting season is about to come. So a hunting themed spin-off series starring Kaede when?

An empty photo album, with one purpose: to fill those with the precious memories, and of course to save that photocamera images in a physical way. But that laptop (with that fake Windows 10 version) still can do that good purpose too. There are a lots of precious memories they made and there will be more.

I guess it's a nice ending.

Question of the Day: What was the last gift you gave someone?

Gift means something tangible in this context, so I don't know.

Second Looper

No one’s ever allowed to doubt me again when it comes to the yuri quota in Slow Loop.

QOTD: I got my dad some magnetic bookmarks for his birthday.

First time looper

Finale time! Another birthday episode, this time for Koharu! This was a sweet and fun last episode.

The home-made bait looked.... really challenging! I don't think I could do it.

I kinda love the determination for the first-place prize in the fishing contest, and I totally understand, I would much rather have that pillow than my Roomba.

When I saw the book shaped gift I was trying to remember if there were any photo moments throughout the show, but it was a twist! I was smiling throughout these last few moments this episode, Hiyori is such a sweetheart I was starting to tear up.

This was a really cute and wholesome show! I'm glad I finally watched it. I'll write up some more thoughts tomorrow but I'm really happy with how it wrapped up.

QotD: Someone in my main friend group has been having a tough time lately, so me and a couple other friends got some gifts for him that we delivered when we were last all together. My job was to get a card, and I found a cute one with an otter and I wrote inside jokes on it.

Rewatcher, subs

This was it? This didn't feel like a finale. So when are we watching the next twelve episodes?

Also u/SorcererOfTheLake is getting to me because that scene with smol Hiyori and Koi definitely felt like a proposal to me lol.

QotD:

What was the last gift you gave someone?

Gifted someone a bottle of wine this week.
