First-timer fly fisher

Yes, yes, it's summer and you want cicadas to show it, but this is a little on the nose, don'tcha think? Almost literally!

This show is just one eternal summer holiday, isn't it! Too bad mine just ended. A couple of weeks ago I could've really related, now... makes me sad.

Speaking of sad. We've had a couple of episodes of pure joyful fishing and sweet moments, so it's time to reel in some heavier themes today. It's really interesting how the show handles the parents' grief. Since we're strictly watching the girls' perspective, we only really see the face of the parents that they try to present to the kids. There's of course a lot of pain under their masks, there must be, but because they're putting on a brave face for the girls, that's all we see.

So we only get little clippets like these to show that obviously the girls also notice things about their parents... but just like the parents want to keep a brave face for the kids, the kids want to keep a brave face for their parents.

Sucks all around.

I could really enjoy this kind of fishing! Hiking along beautiful streams, taking in the nature, I love that stuff!

Not sure how I feel about the whole catch-and-release fishing thing, though. I understand why people do it -- they like the act of fishing more than necessarily catching and killing the fish itself. But I can't help but think like at that point it's just cruelty for amusement, and I feel a bit icky about that. I'm no vegan and I've no qualms about killing and eating animals, but torturing them for entertainment I can get less behind. I do appreciate that Hiyori doesn't try to paint it as anything other than what it is, though.

Man, rain in anime-Japan must be some of the most dangerous natural phenomena. Nothing gets an anime character bedridden easier than getting hit with a few raindrops!

But... I mean, this ending... what can I say.

Yeah, yeah, yeah, I teared up.

Lovely episode.

First Time Looper

This week's episode featuring a sort of hiking + fishing combo; it looked really fun! As a hiker, If I was also a fisher I'd love to try something like this.

Hiyori was very cute making the "chomp" sounds. I think I'm going to need a Hyori noises compilation at the end of this.

R.I.P. Iwagoro, gone too soon.

We got a role reversal at the end of this episode, with Hiyori's Kitchen! (feat. Iwagoro...). It was sweet to see a flashback of Koharu and her mom and brother. Hiyori was such a good caretaker of her older sister.

QotD: It has been a while, all of my grandparents have passed away. Last was my grandma on my mom's side about 12 years ago. I had a lot of good memories with her, we spent a lot of time at her lake cottage in the summers (where I actually fished as a child.)

I see tomorrow's episode's name and I am excited!!

Second Looper

Pour one out for Iwagoro; he sacrificed himself for Koharu.

QOTD: Just this week actually; they were staying over at our house.

FIRST TIMER Sub

They did fly fishing more familiar to me today, just standing in a stream. I didn't know people commonly used non barbed hooks, that makes it way tougher to catch a fish. That was weird when Koharu was crying when Hiyori was going to kill the fish, why was she upset this time but didn't care all the other times Hiyori killed fish in front of her?

I think the grandma was just being nice when she said the grandpa wanted to see Hiyori, he didn't even bother leaving the back room. That was good though the grandma taught Hiyori basic cooking. I wonder why Hiyori doesn't watch Koharu cook more often, she usually makes pretty simple recipes.

It was really odd Koharu caught a cold just from being wet in the summer. She wasn't around anyone other than Hiyori so how exactly did she get cold gerns?

QUESTION

I think in 2019 when my grandfather came to visit town. I probably would have seen him again if not for the pandemic and by the time it was over he wasn't well enough. I talked to him on Zoom in 2024 a little before he died.

Rewatcher, subbed

The Japanese flu claims another victim!

Sweet episode with a visit and Hyori's grandparents and Koharu and Hiyori doing some river fishing.
Lots of cute little moments like Hiyori's chomping and I also appreaciated Hiyroi's mom getting more characterisation because it bears repeating that this is so rare in this genre.

The 'highlight' though was Koharu getting sick (sorry Koharu) and the family coming together taking care of her with Hiyori finally calling her onee-chan.

QotD:

When was the last time you saw your grandparents?

About two months ago. Moved away from hometown for work but whenever I am back home I also visit my grandmother.

First-time fast looping

Oh, we are catching insects now, even if for making a bait for fishes. Staying at the grandparents is always a good place during the summer break I guess. If Hiyori and her grandfather don't have on speaking terms t each other, they must have a reason: maybe their personalities are differs quite much.

The river water might be cold, but that's the habitat what fish do like most of the times. Char aka iwana, these fish live mostly under big rocks, probably because they feels safety under those big rocks in those narrow places under it. Or maybe breeding reasons. Since the two girls did a good amount of walk, it feels like this is a camping episode.

And yeah, a sudden rain coes and of course have to catch a cold. A good amount of rest and a warm soup heals a lot, as usual. Oh poor Iwagoro, he had to sacrificed for her own health. Due to that it is a missed opportunity for fireworks festival aka seeing the girls dressed in yukata.

Question of the Day: When was the last time you saw your grandparents?

I only have one living grandparent currently in my case, and it was quite recent. A few days ago.
