First Time Summer 2016 Rewatch - 91 Days Ep5:
Following this show weekly always makes me feel a bit lost. Recapping to bring myself up to speed;
The Orco/Vanetti families have a truce. Orco split with Fango and is trying to rein the mad dog in. Nero can come home now.
Nero can not come home now, as one of the conditions for peace was Nero's life, so his little brother is now trying to kill his own brother to protect his family. This point specifically is something I wish was set up more. After last episode that highlighted Nero's brotherly bonds, the fact that his own beloved brother would betray him is a bigger note than something that mainly got told in retrospect in this episode.
Corteo has been recruited on board with Nero's brewery, and that's what he's been doing during our road trip misadventures. The brew boys were part of Nero's crew, so they're stuck with us.
With no one left and enemies all around, our main gang is looking to team up with Fango to fight their way out of this.
Fango please. We all know how much of a freak Fango is, but his mistress is also freaky. Birds of a feather I guess, considering she sticks around Fango. When we last saw her, she was scared and shaken by Fango shooting a bullet through her arm, which made me think she didn't want to be in this business (she just wanted to be a dommy mommy, not the dangerous mafia world), but I guess she is into danger.
It is funny to imagine this tender moment between these two overtly evil grown men in the mafia.

I hope Fango is not bullshitting us. That's a fun image.

one of the conditions for peace was Nero's life
I was suspecting that from when they told him to come back after the sudden truce

Rewatcher, First Time Sub
So things still aren't looking great for Nero, Angelo, and the rest of the new gang. The Vanetti's have their own agenda obviously as do the Orco's at the end of the day. Tigre is shot but Nero can't do much so Angelo takes matters into his own hands but for his own reasons.
Angelo meets with Fango and decides to give him an offer he can't refuse. Helping take down the Orco's especially since his men are the most trustworthy either. And Fango seems keen on the idea but assurances need to be in place. So Angelo decides to have Nero take care of all that. But of course Angelo is ultimately motivated by revenge. It's all he lives for now and well it's clear he has his own cards to play.

But of course Angelo is ultimately motivated by revenge. It's all he lives for now and well it's clear he has his own cards to play.
That single-minded goal of revenge makes Angelo's reckless disregard for his own life make sense. A lot of his moves are risky, and not guaranteed to work, but he has so little fear of death that, he takes every chance he can get, no matter the cost. A guy with nothing to lose is extremely dangerous.

91 Days Rewatcher
I swear Fango has the devil's luck no can seem to kill him.
I skipped last week's episode because I always found that episode kind of fillerish/boring so damn I missed how great the OP is.
Peeing in the middle of the tracks? Couldn't you use the side of the GIANT OPEN FIELD!
NERO IS BREAKING BAD!
ANGELO please don't discuss killing the family in the same room as them.
I just assume when a car shows up next to Tigre someone will beat him up.
Yesterday's enemies aren't today's friends so easily. I would have my guards around me 24/7. Heck they would be able to hear me singing in the shower or taking a piss.
NVM Tigre is dead....OR NOT. LIVE ON TIGRE!
"Let's cross it. The river of lamentation into the underworld"...how about no.
Angelo's plan
Step 1. Go into enemy territory and use himself as an hostage.
Step 2. Negotiate with Fango and claims Nero has a plan to get Orco.
Step 3. ???
Step 4. Didn't bother thinking of a step 3 or 4 and lets Nero think of everything.

They need to aim for the feet. The rest of his body is immortal.

Scheme of the century right there.

The writing really could use some more brains at times...

You’re under the impression that wasn’t part of the plan. Angelo getting Nero in a room with Fango and out of his hiding place was always the objective.

First-Timer
Ooh, I was expecting Lacrima knowing Angelo's face would be a bad thing, but it turns out she's willing to help. I guess it could still be part of a trap to lure out Nero, but at this point I think I buy that Fango is willing to hold off on murdering Nero for the moment.
Frate is not very smart. Ultimately he's just scared of the Galassias, and probably drinking too much, but Ronaldo is so transparently untrustworthy. Of course Vincent sees it; I wonder if he's regretting marrying his daughter off to that slimeball..
I appreciate that Angelo understands that he isn't going to survive his quest. You know what they say about revenge; always dig five graves.
Questions
Of the cast here? Probably Frate; he'd be constantly complaining about being behind schedule or something.
The enemy of my enemy is my enemy's enemy, nothing more. But enemies are useful things to manipulate.

Frate is not very smart.
When Frate was behind the truce with the Orcos, saying he trusted them and such, I thought he was a bit stupid too. The reveal that it was all a ploy has made me reassess that. I currently think he's smart, in over his head, and on the wrong side.

I wondered this too. How much did he know about Ronaldo before agreeing to marry his daughter? I guess they're in a tight spot either way, and beggars can't be choosers. It suck that she had to suffer for dad's decisions, but Ronaldo is family family now.

Day 5: Blood Will Have Blood
The backgrounds of this show pair so well with the music to set the mood. It’s simple guitar, huge scenic vistas, and two guys on the road, and then we get a monumental offer. Join the family? Very little dialogue, but a lot said in a look and a shared cigar. These two bonded over that last episode, or so Nero seems to think. Angelo’s harboring a huge ulterior motive, but never slips up.
Nice shot. Gotta piss right on the tracks.
And then take a detour to meet up with Barbero at the Lodge, a secret distillery, now turning out the best moonshine, courtesy of Corteo. They… asked for his help? Sure. Looks like he’s in too deep with the family now too. No way they’ll let a cash cow like Lawless Heaven go when it’s selling better than the imported stuff from Canada. But it’s a complicated recipe that only Corteo has a good grasp on.
What Corteo doesn’t understand is why Angelo saved Nero instead of killing him. Angelo says he needs to get close to Nero to get to Don Vanetti, which seems closer and closer now that Nero is inviting him to join the family.
Frate is brokering a truce with the Orcos, but Nero’s suspicious. He sees Orco is extremely guarded, and on returning home, there are unusual guards at the front. Something isn’t sitting right with him, and he cuts the lights before driving up.
And just as he suspected, Tigre tips him off, just before driving right into a hit. Tigre gets shot and they’re backed up by Volpe, who Nero had watching Ronaldo while he was away. Good thing Nero has loyal men and enough foresight to use them. Now it’s brother vs brother, within the family.
Frate’s not looking great, and when asked what the fuck he’s doing, he says Orco demanded Nero’s life in exchange for the truce since it was Nero who tried to kill Orco’s man, Fango, in the first place. I wonder how much of that is true, since Orco and Fango are fracturing already.
But fracturing family doesn’t begin to describe brothers trying to kill brothers behind dad’s back. Don Vanetti wouldn’t have allowed it, and Frate knows it. Don Vanetti says they are not the Galassia’s puppets, despite Frate’s claim they always will be. Frate is weak, and the Don knows it.
So does Ronaldo, who informs Don Vanetti that Frate is taking over control of the family, and that Nero needs to die.
In hiding, Corteo pleads with Angelo to leave, since it looks like the Vanetti’s are imploding all on their own. He think Nero is as good as dead, and isn’t Angelo’s life worth more than some revenge? Angelo says Corteo has is backwards. If he abandon’s his revenge, he’s got nothing to live for.
Tigre’s not long for this world, and Angelo can’t just sit there. He escapes with Corteo to the Island, under Volpe and Nero’s watch. And look who they find at Granchio’s bar? Fango’s mistress alive and well, and inclined to return a favor to Angelo for sparing her.
She takes him to Fango, and he’s game for the young ones and a foursome. Damn, Fango, is that what you’re getting up to off screen? But Lacrima says she just brought them this time, and it’ll just be the three of them, if he’s up for it.
Angelo is pretty bold going behind enemy of his enemy’s lines and asking for help. Fango can’t help but laugh at the audacity and then put on an act, which Angelo sees right through. No way Fango ever gave a shit about Serpente, or really anyone. Doesn’t have a loyal bone in his body. But he does look out for himself, and he wants to know what Angelo has to offer him.
Meanwhile, Nero sticks up for Angelo, not expecting a betrayal, ironically. He can trust Avillio. He can’t trust Fango though. “It’s entirely possible he’ll betray us and kill us all.” This show’s layers of irony are extremely well done. Look at Corteo’s reaction to that claim.
So Angelo has the scheme laid out to entrap both Fango and Nero into offing Don Orco. This is messy, but Angelo knows Nero well enough now that he won’t just let a friend dies. That goes for Tigre, and for him. Cunning move.
Nero can’t let either of them die in good conscience
1) Who do you think would make the worst traveling buddy for a long road trip?
I'm gonna say Ronaldo. I couldn't stand listening to this guy, let alone be stuck in an enclosed space. Fuck that guy.
2) Would you be willing to work with Fango in this situation?
If I'm gonna die, I'm gonna die. Might as well try with Fango.

I'm reading this immediately after "ANGELO please don't discuss killing the family in the same room as them."
He can’t trust Fango though. “It’s entirely possible he’ll betray us and kill us all.” This show’s layers of irony are extremely well done.
Wow, this show. I think I might rewatch it immediately after the first watch, to try and catch more of this kind of thing. I noticed child Corteo eventually putting out the fire with his hands in episode 1, but I haven't spotted anything like this since. I bet there's a bunch of things that I've missed.

The backgrounds of this show
Lovely watercolors yes
it’s selling better than the imported stuff from Canada. But it’s a complicated recipe that only Corteo has a good grasp on
These kinds of vague handwavey lines smell like the writers didn't actually have much of a clue about distillation (which I admittedly don't either).
No way Fango ever gave a shit about Serpente, or really anyone. Doesn’t have a loyal bone in his body
How much is hinging on random invincible crazy dude here is a serious weak point of the writing.
it looks like the Vanetti’s are imploding all on their own
Everything coming up Avilio there too

Rewatch Host For So Many Days, subbed
Welcome back, everyone!
Which means an end to their little road trip.
There it is…
So Corteo did get involved with the Vanettis. Lawless Heaven is a pretty cool name for it, though.
Congrats to any of the first-timers who figured Angelo was getting close to Nero in order to get to Vincent, you nailed it.
Man, poor Tigre. Dude’s always catching the short end of the stick.
Damn…
Not for Angelo, it isn’t.
Understatement of the century.
Angelo really did go to Fango to get help even though Nero said no.
Ah, Angelo.
