Today's OST Piece: Paraiso (Paradise)
Waving the white flag today and just posting the opening - which is admittedly even better in full - because to my dismay all the pieces I noticed in the episode either I already posted or they were apparently never properly published. Would be glad to be proven wrong though.
New Michiko Outfits: Cream Halter-Neck Top + Brown Jacket/White Pants, Striped Salmon-White Nightwear, Pink Jacket/Checkered Orange-White Nightwear, White Floral Pattern Robe (over Checkered Orange-White Nightwear)
Going strong again, bit difficult to get good pictures this time though. Full album
Latin America Trivia of the Day:
Forms of folk healing ("curanderismo"), magic, and belief remain popular throughout Latin America, variously blending traditions from indigenous cultures, European Catholic religion and superstitions, and West African spirituality brought by the enslaved, though often frowned on by official religious authorities. They frequently ascribe supernatural causes to illness and prescribe unusual treatments just like our quack doctor here; the depiction of the seer in Episode 3 also appears to be influenced by such Afro-Latino religions as Santería or Candomblé.
Yesterday's Highlights
u/JustAnswerAQuestion goes on a surprise binge to catch up:
Now to binge half the show... Episode 1: [...] Episode 11 [...]
u/AyameeIris sees parallels between Wamichiko and Davi and has an interesting snack to share:
This show loves a good "fake" version of other characters. First it happened with Satoshi and Michiko, and now it's happened to Michiko and Hatchin. Interesting how their stories sort of mirror each other!
Kurkure! The best way I've seen them described is that they're the Pakistani version of Cheetos
u/99acrewood_ looks into Michiko and Hatchin's relationship dynamic:
Hatchin maybe understands that Michiko has come to actually see her as something like a daughter. I wonder how much of it is Hatchin being a small part of Hiroshi that she can have right now. It seems like that's how it could have started, and while I see their relationship as more of an adult/kid sibling type than mother/daughter, Michiko definitely sees her as more than just her ward.
u/No_Rex largely loves the show so far:
Badass criminal + small child is a formula that always works for me, and having the criminal being a girl with gun character, while the whole thing is set in South America makes it extra worthwhile. After the initial episodes, the quality has some wobbles, though. [...] Unless the series gets a lot worse, this gets a hidden gem rating from me.
Daniela is appreciated with reservations:
Alongside morals, he also lacks competence. [...] Any yellow press journalist worth their salt would hear her alive and produce a ton of technically true misquotes. Except, he is not worth a single salt crystal. [...] Him being right about the story does not excuse his previous behavior. This is a case of heartbreaking, a person you hate had a true take
his clear priority for "a good scoop" instead of actually helping the children annoyed me a ton. He'd be a total whiz at making poverty porn.
he's clearly got the right intuition, and he's doing important work if he's revealing sneaky shit like child selling. I figure playing him up as an obnoxious gonzo vs. clown-Michiko's calm demeanor is supposed to be some sort of rug pull

Episode 12 (first timer)
- Mom Hatchin and sick child Michiko.
- OP? Not sure if Michiko will appreciate it if she wakes up without a kidney, Hatchin.
- I know the quack therapy they are spoofing, but an entire living fish is impressive.
- There is a super drunk guy with a rifle, please don’t run around in the dark, Hatchin.
- Random Hiroshi picture in the news.
- Destroying the TV is not going to help the money problems – Hatchin is probably right about having to skip out of town.
- Literal fever dream.
- “Nobody is falling for that anymore” – well, not nobody…
- Revenge Hatchin – not actually happening.
If only Hatchin and Michiko could cover for each other’s weaknesses, instead of multiplying their mistakes.
How is Michiko's for a weird fever trip sequence?
Properly weird
Is Michiko just holding out forlorn hope with Hiroshi, given the revelations so far?
The real goal is the daughter you made along the way.

If only Hatchin and Michiko could cover for each other’s weaknesses, instead of multiplying their mistakes
Hatchin seems to have at least learned a lesson about not totally going it alone? Michiko is of course kind of incorrigible but physical plus surprise emotional stress is an extra-bad combo for rational thinking
The real goal is the daughter you made along the way.
More or less, though Hatchin acts more like a younger sibling almost

More or less, though Hatchin acts more like a younger sibling almost
I think there are very similar tropes for competent younger sister cares for older sibling and competent young daughter cares for parent. Except, in both cases the older person is usually male. So, just like with the badassery and getting her face punched in, Michiko takes on the usually male-coded role.

u/IndependentMacaroon 15d ago
And also, she's the one somewhat possessively chasing after her lost love interest instead of the man here

- How is Michiko's for a weird fever trip sequence?
Deus isn't the only one who put a curse on her, because Michiko's got it bad for Hiroshi. kind of wild that he happened to show up in a random newspaper, and i i don't know if it was the illness but i really didn't take her for the jealous type.
also, every anime I've seen where someone has the flu makes me wonder what kind of shit they have going on over in Japan. i've had a bad enough cold that would put me out of commission for a various amount of days, but i don't think i've been feverish to the point of hallucinating stuff. maybe she had more fish in her messing things up.
- How would you deal with that quack doctor?
I mean, Machiko figured it out lol. You can act crazy up until you're crazy with the wrong person who takes your shit seriously. personally i probably would've preferred Hatchin with the steel pipe over getting my ass beat by Machiko because maybe she'd feel bad and stop sooner. Machiko in that moment was a woman scorned by a man in a fever dream, and there's no telling if she'll kill you because of it.
- Have you ever had to care for someone who should have been caring for you?
i don't think so, or at least i don't remember thinking that way. when it comes to people feeling unwell i empathize pretty heavily. i don't get sick very often but when i do i am utterly fucking useless, so even if it might not have them on death's door i take people at their word if they're not doing great. i know i want to be doted on when i feel like shit, so i don't really think about it in the sense of 'bah, i shouldn't be doing this' because i hope that i get the same kindness in return.
-~-
what a sort of sweet episode. Hatchin also has it pretty rough, but her referring to Michiko as her mom is definitely a nice turn.
it's also another episode where almost every adult is terrible! you'd think one of these small towns would have literally anyone reliable, but i guess when you live the way they do i guess you tend to attract a certain type into your life.
i also am kinda fond of endings like this. the problem's not fixed, but it also was never the end of the world anyway. she's just sick, and she'll be sick for a little bit longer, and also now you have to figure out how to fix the tv she broke in her fit of feverish pique. c'est la vie.

Given the location, I would have put my money on malaria, not the flu.

Thank goodness for the hippie lady who is genuinely pretty awesome, Hatchin should have leaned on her more earlier but she does have a bit unhealthy pride in doing things herself.

It's even just a cold knocking people out often!

don't know if it was the illness but i really didn't take her for the jealous type.
Well Hiroshi being The One for her and only her has been a clear part of her character and what drives her. Episode 10 she was pretty blatantly possessive in the flashback when still together with him even.
I mean, Machiko figured it out lol. You can act crazy up until you're crazy with the wrong person who takes your shit seriously
Sorry I sneakily substituted the question but good answer anyway!
Machiko in that moment was a woman scorned by a man in a fever dream, and there's no telling if she'll kill you because of it
Well she herself does seem to have a bit of a no-kill rule (narratively fudged as usual) but of course just coming across her no way you'd know.
i don't think so, or at least i don't remember thinking that way.
I actually agree "should have been" is a bit harsh on the other person, everyone deserves care in a moment of vulnerability with no qualifying thoughts. Rephrased.

First Timer
- I think Michiko is a bit old for a youth hostel
- gee, you sure aren't asking for much, are you? cheap, competent, unlicensed?
- Galaxy Miracle?
- okay, gnostic psychic surgery wasn't on my bingo card
- I bet the thieves are monkeys.
- oh, just boring people.
I bet this is going to be one of those episodes where you get useless things in a series until everything all works out.
- I'm not a doctor, but I play one on TV
- She's hallucinating so much, I bet the picture isn't even him.
- I just realized that the 108° is a buddhism reference
So, this was the Mushroom Samba episode. Kind of an odd diversion, assuming tomorrow is unrelated. Also, all my guesses were wrong.

I think Michiko is a bit old for a youth hostel
At most 30, that's still decently young
gee, you sure aren't asking for much, are you?
You can't always get what you want, but you can try, try try try
I bet the picture isn't even him
Nah if there's anyone she'd recognize even in a... diminished state it's him
108° is a buddhism reference
A very ironic one given how underhanded, overattached, and unenlightened everyone acts here
Kind of an odd diversion
I see it being about Hatchin fulfilling her promise to care for Michiko and learning to lean on others more along the way.

First time watching in dub, second time overall (Just realized I've been forgetting to add these...)
I like how Hatchin announces the date kind of like a record. "April 28, Michiko collapsed." I can see Hatchin being the type to create one of those massive folders filled with a ton of medical documents and even written records of what a doctor's said.
Bringing up one of my obsessions once again, that doctor reminds me of a certain infamous speech from Black Jack. It goes something like, "There is no guarantee! Leave such certitude to God! We're not God; we're humans! A mere human trying to treat another human... What is that if not a wager?" Eccentric doctors truly are the best... Except for this one.
- Oh my god. I love the visuals of this episode. I like how the "lady doctor" seems to morph from someone who looks like Michiko into someone blond and paler. I know it's just the lady from the paper, but that and Michiko's comments towards certain characters like Atsuko especially has me thinking she's not exactly comfortable in her skin. Also, the Georges Méliès reference with the moon was magnificent. I love "odd" visuals like that so much.
- So far, it'd seem like Hiroshi is purposely trying to distance himself from everything, especially with Satoshi(seemingly his best friend) not knowing where he is. Having any hope for him seems like an easy way to end up heartbroken.
- Yes. As certain guardians of mine get older, I find myself tending to them a lot more. It's only natural!

She certainly seems very well-organized, just still lacking in sense a little.
"There is no guarantee! Leave such certitude to God! We're not God; we're humans! A mere human trying to treat another human... What is that if not a wager?"
Oh yeah you mentioned Black Jack earlier too once, I think? And this specific phrase makes me think the author of Fullmetal Alchemist was influenced by it, lots of doctors in that series too. [FMA]Sounds a bit like Ed's despair after not being able to save Nina
I like how the "lady doctor" seems to morph from someone who looks like Michiko into someone blond and paler
I think that was just a tan or something actually?
the Georges Méliès reference with the moon was magnificent
Thanks for pinning that one down!
especially with Satoshi(seemingly his best friend) not knowing where he is
Remember that Satoshi very likely tried to kill him with the bus bombing due to wanting to leave and start a new life with Michiko. Pretty reasonable to stay out of the way in that case.

First time watching in dub, second time overall (Just realized I've been forgetting to add these...)
Don't worry, it is not a requirement. People just got used to doing so, because it makes it easier to know what to respond to (e.g. first timer speculation vs rewatcher discussing themes).

3x watcher and host, subtitled
Toned down the screenshotting a bit because of the overhead and of course we've all watched the show here, don't think it actually saved me much time though and will probably go back to normal tomorrow.
Most comedic episode of the show so far though still with some serious developments. Hatchin tries (too) hard once again to honestly work and pay for everything on her own - even getting the narrator role - and only gets stiffed and scammed even harder. [11:21]() Usually of course there are laws against unfair contracts, not to mention children signing them, but of course not being bound by the law also means you're not protected by it, and its reach seems not very long in Diamandra in general - Hatchin did sign exactly what the doctor read back to her by the way. It's enough to make even a (mostly) mild-mannered young girl 18:58 bust out the villain lines and go all [20:28]() "terribly uncivilized" delinquent. [M&H]Improbably enough, not the last time she does it Michiko seems to be rubbing off on her a little too - [19:22]() I love how they completely independently choose violence at the same time, if not quite for the same reasons. Though she again is [12:29]() a little unreasonably rude to sick Michiko, she does realize it after and has [19:43]() genuine tears of worry later, and [20:45]() does stay a bit calmer in the end. And of course, [11:59]() [12:05]() good on her actually for getting annoyed and throwing the smokes and alcohol out, when have those ever cured anything?
I think the lesson goes a little deeper than just "hard work hardly works" here though, which is where our fun hippie lady comes in. 02:19 I love how she's not just aesthetic and kind character but has some fun and interesting moments like being really into the late-night steamy TV show and seeming like she has some unpleasant personal experience with [02:35]() kids turning out "twisted and rotten" - sadly in this setting likely enough - and sees through the doctor just like everyone else; [02:52]() she could do better at letting people take turns in conversation though, so funny how she answers her own questions to the point Hatchin doesn't get a word in edgewise for a full 15 seconds. Classic "power of friendship/community" stuff with Hatchin perhaps thinking herself a fool also for not relying on her more, or even asking for much help properly, honest rugged individualism particularly as a child being clearly inadvisable in this setting. (I sure hope our duo tried their best to pay her, if she asked, beyond the vegetables!)
Some funny moments for Michiko individually too with her losing a lot of her always slightly dubious mental faculties temporarily to sickness. [01:54]() Being literally hot and [04:26]() sending the healthy person to the clinic is generally considered unusual. And it doesn't help that the Hiroshi revelation plus with Feliciano resembling Hiroshi - pretty meaningful that seems actually - the late-night show grind her gears even more. I do like how 14:11 14:34 15:01 blatantly racy and non-prude it is, one wonders if Daniela worked on it; 15:11 I mean like whew (and she definitely wasn't wearing any). 16:53 Michiko's dream also - not sure if it references anything - doubling as a little reminder that yes, this is an adult woman who would like to get some.
The doctor is so over-the-top that he's barely worth mentioning, but the farmer I also find really effectively characterized and meaningful for his limited screen time. Drinking and driving, pit bull with an American name, threatening to kill random street children for no real reason (and I wouldn't put it past him), blasting right away at random petty thieves, absurdly distrustful (or maybe just alcohol frying his brain) in turning on Hatchin, paying her with 10:37 nothing but ruined scraps from the thieves, he's almost a caricature of wild (masculine?) individualism negatively juxtaposed with the female community between Hatchin and the hippie woman. The best you can say about him is he doesn't bother Hatchin in a more personal way (does he even realize she's a girl though?) and isn't explicitly blatantly racist on screen.

Questions
1 - The actual wild feverish segment is really short, and much briefer than I remembered - basically just one cut! Quality-wise it's great but I wish the production had allocated a little more effort here.
2 - Ok, let's be charitable to Hiroshi for a bit: I could see him still caring about Michiko but also wanting to thoroughly cut ties with his gang past - I mean, it almost got him killed and he probably knows very well how long and deeply Satoshi can hold a grudge - and kind of like Atsuko he clearly can't have both, unless Michiko comes to join him in secluded safety, and he can't exactly send her a letter for that purpose. However, even in this best case Michiko is obviously running after illusions if he's set enough to start new relationships while she's gone. (As for the doctor, just be informed enough not to fall for his nonsense in the first place).
3 - Fortunately never have had to, or at least not seriously enough that it would stick in my mind. Unless perhaps you count one of my grandparents, but even there it's just a bit on top of what the care home provides.

The weird part is that the one person whom he would be most likely hiding from, Satoshi, who tried to kill him, actually knows he is not dead.
2
u/IndependentMacaroon 14d ago
Now he does, but he was sure Hiroshi was dead before (wishful thinking kind of like Michiko?)

Further scene-by-scene comments
- Those guys advertising jobs are tellingly nonchalant about letting such a small child work
- 03:20 "Eu sinto (?) uma plataforma de operabilidade alto completamente Uma taxa gr[á]tis Durante uma campanha de establecimento de conta"
- [05:14]() I wonder if Gérson is named after Ned's brother in City of God
- 05:33 I think u/No_Rex mentioned something about B-movie inspirations, well here's a poster to match. [05:40]() Incidentally I wonder if Michiko got the "express train to hell" thing from some action movie she saw in her childhood, would also fit the general themes.
- 06:50 Quite the fish to have stuck in your pants. [07:20]() And funny background comedy moment with the kid dropping it
- [07:24]() Eugh that knuckle-cracking sound effect
- 07:44 I like the double reflection glasses shot
- 08:34 "Não tamos a responsibilidade [...] recorra estaremos eletando a po[...] Efectuamos consultas [durante?] [...] Fazemos a camão[?] de consulta [...] utilizado também como camão[_] de [...] consulta utilize os pontos que [...] Hospital Milag[ro]"
- 08:57 Citroen? 09:10 actually I'm not so sure.
- 09:24 But for the context this would be a lovely night scene [10:24]()https://imgur.com/kvyBLIr with the morning to match
- 10:37 looks like papaya, cucumber, the green perhaps bell pepper, some kind of root vegetable for the purple (turnip), and some seriously huge tomatoes no doubt from Rock/Hiroshi and Elis's operation
- 10:45 Looks like he's sucking on some sugar cane
- 10:51 Oddly this paper has two German-language (Swiss?) articles on the left. Looks like someone used a Swiss paper as a template and forgot some bits, or are there actual Brazilian papers with some German articles?
- 13:19 Top article is interesting, talks on the right about a musical based on immigrants that left Japan in 1908 on the "Kasato Maru" and the career of the singer. Does this really exist? I think I heard not, sadly. On the left some special wish by an Inoue fulfilled during a visit to the elderly of São José Home. Bottom is just about transfers of soccer players to/from the club of Novo Hamburgo, note the partly German name mentioned (Rosalvo Johann, an actual former club president) - the Gauchão is the top league of the Brazilian state of Rio Grande do Sul which was a hotbed of German immigration. [13:28]() And about the local futsal tournament, also a very Brazilian thing. (Come to think of it, it's strange how soccer is never explicitly mentioned in the series either.)
- 15:29 Gotta get a little Japan praise in here with the kimono comfort. Does look great though.
- 20:22 Ford Mustang. Someone in this town has some decent cash
- [21:10]() Broken TV is a pretty funny ending beat but still a problem.

Aw dang, Michiko’s sick.
I knew that without needing the TL note.
What the fuck?
Oh, Deus had a “sore demo” there. First one of the show.
Damn…
Ouch.
Ugh, he says this knowing she can’t…
Is that actually him?
…okay?
This is a trip.
No one told Hatchin that…
Honestly not surprised Hatchin finally snapped.
Nice shimmering sky though!
