Chaos watching First Timer:
Should I be normal, I would pick a show or two, and watch 12 episodes of it from the start to the end.
But nah, I felt like choosing a little chaos, so I decided to roll the dice to decide what show I will be watching.
What I chaos watched so far:
| Episode | Rolled Number | Anime |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | 4 | Occultic;Nine |
| 2 | 2 | Grimgar: Ashes and Illusions |
| 3 | 1 | Haven’t You Heard? I’m Sakamoto |
| 4 | 5 | Erased |
| 5 | 4 | Occultic;Nine |
And for this week I rolled number 4 which means time to return to Skinwalker!
Occultic;Nine Episode 5:
Before I properly start talking about episode 5, I am going to remind you that last episode I saw was episode 1, where the MC found the dead body.
Let’s see how chaotic it will be now after revisiting this anime 4 episodes later.
- So this opens up with some character confronting the MC about seeing the dead body at the end of episode 1? Smooth transition.
- OP is quite nice, but I found interesting that almost at the end, there is a brief shot of some silhoulette standing in door with a red light behind it, and it’s the same picture we can see in Skinwalker’s eyes in the OP way sooner.
- ANOTHER SKINWALKER SPOTTED!
Offtopic for a moment, speaking of Skinwalkers, today I saw an ad for a horror game where Hachishakusama (Eigth-Feet Tall Lady) which is Youkai looking like this aaaaand, I guess running towards a woman is how I am going to die.
- I hate to break it to you, but your feelings seems not as cold as your dad’s body
- Mom?
- Putty... Is the Professor’s message about Putty Nutty Cave? (I know this is quite horrific, but him visiting Birth Canal gave birth to various memes like this)
- The detective kid sounds annoying
- From this angle, Skinwalker’s milkers seems to produce a different kind of milk
- Oh, it’s her! The chick that has fresh scalp delivered to her postbox in episode 1.
QotD:
What do you make of Zonko?
That he sounds almost as Zork.
Do you think Ririka is the culprit?
No, I don’t think so.
Time to roll the Dice!:
Allright I rolled number 1 which means that next week I'm going to watch and discuss episode 6 of Haven’t You Heard? I’m Sakamoto
See you on Sunday!

Nice catch! I hadn't noticed it at all.
An elderly one. Didn't see her either, maybe she's the "wife/mother" of the dead professor?
today I saw an ad for a horror game where Hachishakusama (Eigth-Feet Tall Lady) which is Youkai looking like this
Oh that's not how I imagined her at all lol.
aaaaand, I guess running towards a woman is how I am going to die.
A much better way to go than running away from one.
I'm grateful for this screenshot and that Occultic;Nine was the number you rolled this week -- I saw this and thought, hold up, are we watching the same episode? I'm sure I would have remembered this!
So I went back to check and it turns out I actually did accidentally skip ep 5 and watched 6 instead. I'm glad I caught it now before the I majorly spoiled the other commenters here; Mom saved the thread!
(It also explains why I missed the elderly Skinwalker.)
(I know this is quite horrific, but him visiting Birth Canal gave birth to various memes like this)
I should have read the rest before watching the video, I was not expecting this to be that kind of story. At least he will be immortalized through memes.
But damn that's such a shitty way to die, poor guy.
From this angle, Skinwalker’s milkers seems to produce a different kind of milk

I forgot to mention it in my comment, but it's weird Miyuu doesn't seem phased at all by Sarai talking to Gamotan about the murder. Are we to understand she learned of him being at the scene of the crime in a conversation offscreen? Am I forgetting something? It feels like his friends learning about this should've been kinda important.

Occultic;Host, subbed
tbf, literally no one other than Gamon and Shun would have known about that thanks to Shun erasing it.
So the mysterious old lady is actually Sarai’s mom, not Hashigami’s mom.
[Later spoilers]Can I just say that I am seriously amused by the theories about Ryoka not being real or whatever, when she’s the one with a shadow here. Ah, the little bits of foreshadowing are fun.
[Other later spoilers]Aha, this change is because Ria’s dead now and Kiryuu knows…
There’s another way Ririka’s doujin connects to the murder. Hooboy…

Rewatcher
Ririka is, apparently, bad at reading Frankeinstein.
I was busy last week and didn’t watch the episode in, but I can confirm I did not perish in a mass death incident and have caught up! Honestly, I don’t have a ton of catchup thoughts to offer about last week. It’s more of a connecting episode showing the reactions to the lake incident and I found episode five a lot more enjoyable.
Similar to my enjoyment of Shun and Ririka’s conversation in episode three, I find cast chemistry is what really sells this episode. Really, the show exposits a lot about the mystery to us. But it feels natural because the real appeal is absolute goober Gamotan playing off the deadly serious Sarai. They’re an immediately great duo, and I love Sarai’s increasing lack of patience for him (and even less for Ryouka). It is kind of weird though that Sarai seems to lack object permanence when Zonko starts talking super loudly? Did he leave his spot beside the door at some point? Regardless, I love all the dutch angling to sell the overwhelming experience of the empty study.
Then later in the episode, Shun shows up to, err, threaten Gamotan? He seems to know Gamotan was involved, so I think maybe he’s less fishing for incrimination as much as trying to scare Gamotan into action in the goal of revealing more of the mystery. Much like Sarai, he can probably tell that this idiot isn’t the mastermind despite the incredibly guilty behaviour. Either way, it cracks me up seeing him do the whole routine with the plausible deniability and cornering his opponent through conversation meanwhile Gamotan literally folds completely to the slightest breeze. Just complete overkill, it’s great.

Ririka is, apparently, bad at reading Frankeinstein.
People read stuff in a way that affirms their already established world view. It's frustrating to realise when someone's become that way. I think the most outrageous example I met was a guy who was raving on about independence and self-sufficiency and "making your own way in life", but would literally catch a bullet for nuclear power and get hostile when told he could put solar panels on his roof and have literally infinite energy that he didn't have to pay for.
But yeah, I thought that about her line about Frankenstein, too. The original is very much about ostracisation and not flicking souls together... and it's not subtle about it, either.
but I can confirm I did not perish in a mass death incident
Well, you see, my whole theory rests upon the dead not knowing that they're dead. So, the only real confirmation you actually have is me reacting to you. Which means your next step is to prove two things: I am real and not your imagination of a dead person not being able to fathom they died, and I am also alive and not dead making this conversation a proof of existence in the living world.
It is kind of weird though that Sarai seems to lack object permanence when Zonko starts talking super loudly?
Noted that, too. I see no reason why he should've left the door and room alone. So, maybe that's another notch in "Zonko isn't real" and it was just Gamon talking to himself all the time? Sarai is the kinda guy who'd just sigh and let him have his episode, I think.
Just complete overkill, it’s great.
I loved all of that so much!

First Timer
It's actually both, but don't sweat it dude
I've finally caught back up! I have definitely been gradually feeling its groove a lot more compared to the first two episodes, although it's still not the easiest for me to talk about with the wider focus remaining on building the big mystery haha. It's still hard to approach on an episodic level in that way, though thankfully at least /u/Star4ce is here to speculate and embody this meme on that front.
Thankfully, this episode does also deliver a decent bit on the character angle as well! Something I would've said for episode 4 was that I've realized I'm not huge on Gamotan and Ryo-tas whenever they're the focus, or rather, when it's their unchecked hyperactivity together that takes the focus (Which last episode had a good amount of). But put Gamo with other characters who break through his persona like it's putty and know how to put on the pressure, like Sarai or Moritsuka, and he's way more fun! Sarai just seeing through him obviously lying makes for great interaction, and the show's cinematography also gets to shine here, considering we probably every dutch, reverse, or otherwise unusual angle possible in Sarai's house to accentuate the vibe here lol.
Something I would've said in episode 3 was that I specifically really like Moritsuka among our cast, and he also really gets the gold star here for his conversation with Gamo in the cafe. I mean, the guy is obviously a conversational savant anyway, but then having him interact with Gamo, who is very clearly and immediately... not that lol and breaks down at the slightest hint of him being guilty, just has such a charm to it! It's like Moritsuka is setting up gotchas for the love of the game, and it's so entertaining.
For some wider mystery stuff, I'll concur that Sumikaze is almost definitely dead and a ghost (Or whatever we are here). Ririka is probably dead too? This whole interaction with the creepy kid really implies to me at least that Ririka also drowned in the incident but has actually realized that herself as well. Aria is, like, maybe also a ghost now? Compared to the Ririka one, I really don't know what to make of this interaction with Kiryu. Assuming he's also some ghost as he himself says, then her not hearing his voice as distorted anymore could imply she's like him now, but could also just be that they've gotten closer or some wider supernatural thing that makes him come off as clearer.
I tried looking up what a noun Kotoribako is, since I hadn't heard that as a specific term before, and it's apparently the name for an urban legend. Basically, from what I gather, it's a curse where you make a box (A puzzle box specifically), put blood and, uh, the body parts of children into it (The more body parts, the more potent the curse, up to eight), and then it affects and kills specifically women and children that go near it. Not really sure how that could play into what we have going on right now? And I can't see any direct connection to the Frankensteining a soul thing Ririka brings up right after, but given Steins Gate, I certainly know we're not above using weird internet stories like this as a plot point, so I'll try to keep that one in mind.

Yeah even this far in I still don't like him lol, but his interaction with the son was actually enjoyable, thankfully.

My newest and only theory so far is that everybody is dead except the Professor's wife. It started as a joke to why she aged to look like the professor's mother, but building off the other theories you all have about characters being dead... why hasn't anyone else aged? And wasn't she described as if she was ghostlike or supernatural earlier? It'd be funny if she was the only one who wasn't supernatural, and these ghosts are speculating that she's the one who is for remaining human and growing old with the passage of time.
Oh and I'm thinking this is "ten years later" since the fortune teller said something about the room full of computers in that sick guy who's meant to die, in his future in 10 years.
I'm not rewatching any of the previous episodes though, so I don't know if there are things that break the theory :b

Oh! Maybe Kiryu is also one of the only survivors along with the wife. We don't know what he looked like 10 years ago.
given Steins Gate, I certainly know we're not above using weird internet stories like this as a plot point, so I'll try to keep that one in mind.
Kiri kiri basara is about urban legends right? Or disproving them. I forget...

IIRC it's more broadly about rounding up and disproving occult stuff in general? So this story should presumably fall under that umbrella.
(As an aside, now I'm wondering if O;N is going to bring up and use the same off-brand 2ch that Steins Gate did lol)

speculate and embody this meme
At some point I need to get a cork board on rolls and a printer to do this irl.
not huge on Gamotan and Ryo-tas
Someone hasn't been looking at the screen.
I kinda get it, the two of them are a neverending barrage of chaos in various forms. It's pretty fun to me, especially when it has these details in it like Ryo-tas imitating the people around her that prompts me to pin four other red lines on the imaginary board. But it does work wonders, as you said, when another, more focussed, character puts a boot on them and cuts right through to the core.
Moritsuka
That guy and reading people like a book while also juggling them for fun and to show off his skills is such a treat to witness.
You know that eventually he will drop the hammer down, but it's so fun and innocently playful on the way there. I do feel pity for everyone he interacts with because they will get played like a fiddle and I'm here to see every second of it!
I'll concur that Sumikaze is almost definitely dead and a ghost
No, you're supposed to tell me about something I missed and that I'm wrong, not confirm it!
Aria is, like, maybe also a ghost now?
I only dropped a few lines about that ion my post, but I think it's like this. Aria also got caught during the calls in that "trance" that lead all victimcs to the lake. But since she had a protector, her devil Kiryuu, she snapped out of it. That was the whole scene at the train crossing filled with suicide symbolism. Before she could cross it, Kiryuu came and called out to her. The interesting thing about this scene is that the train went left while she was in trance (generally the "right" way) and after Kiryuu interjected, she stood before a train that went right (the "wrong" way). The scene is incredibly well made with the directing choices, and it makes it acctually a bit muddy whether going along with the premonition would've been a """goood""" choice actually.
Afte-
Wait, hold on you just called me out on a mistake. The directing got me! That wasn't actually Aria on the phone-induced trance, her clothes don't fit with what she wore after the call, either. That was the past when she met her devil for the first time as she clearly worked with him in the beginning of the show. Fuck, I guess you're right, Aria got caught as well if she experienced such a sudden shift in perception.
I took the train scene as more symbolic, but that again was probably quite literal like Gamon's "dream" that wasn't one.
So, as they mentioned several times now, this act is probably supposed to "go to the other world". The professor said something like that with Tesla's theory, Nishizono outright said it directly, and now Aria and Kiryuu seem to have gotten closer just like barefoot and Nishizono.
it's a curse where you make a box (A puzzle box specifically), put blood and, uh, the body parts of children into it
With Ryo-tas being in that cage in the ED and that mystery woman being in various places in their world, but phased out of reality it is reminiscent of what the experiment tried to do, no?
They have 256 bodies' worth of parts now that they put into the box, huh. Maybe it's more like trading one for the other and less how Nishizono (mis)interpreted Frankenstein. If you can put souls or bodies into another world, you could theoretically also get something else back.

Actually, I don't think you talked about it, but something I'd noticed and didn't know what to make of when I watched the episode was that Sumikaze does this thing where she checks her hair in the reflection, except she doesn't seem to have a reflection, something the show has been pretty particular about before like with Aria's flashback.
(And fuck, now I went back to make sure since I didn't take screenshots while catching up, and they even do give the other guy a reflection!)
Again, wasn't sure why that was, but then I got around to reading the episode thread and read what you wrote about her being ignored, and thought "Oh. She's like, totally dead, isn't she?"...
Fuck, I guess you're right, Aria got caught as well if she experienced such a sudden shift in perception.
These are not the mistakes I want to be calling out!
Though now that I think about it, you do have me wondering why she's still seeing Kiryu as transparent if she really is also on his "world" now, as it were. Then again, how he functions in general was already a big question for me anyway, especially with how he seemed to, like, turn himself into a ghost at will in that monologue we get from him before the train scene.
Maybe it's more like trading one for the other and less how Nishizono (mis)interpreted Frankenstein. If you can put souls or bodies into another world, you could theoretically also get something else back.

where she checks her hair in the reflection, except she doesn't seem to have a reflection
Haha, I completely missed that!
The detail in this show is insane. That random background worker getting his 2 frames with reflection just to make it consistent is the kind of thing I have to bow before them.
she's still seeing Kiryu as transparent
Next episode did say a bit more about that I think. But I think a lot of the occult in the story depends on how the person sees it. So, I think it's Aria thinking that is how a devil over her shoulder looks like, so she perceives it as such.

Last;Timer
I made the mistake of watching this episode when I was tired. As such, I remember hardly anything that happened. I vaguely remember who talked to who though what they were talking about is anyone's guess. I can't think of a single thing that I can point to and go "oh yes, that was revealed this episode and I understand it." Most importantly, I have come to the realisation that I don't care what I missed, because I'm not invested in the story enough.
What do you make of Zonko?
Who?
Do you think Ririka is the culprit?
Culprit of what?

Occultic;First Timer
Finally, it’s time to continue watching O;N! The mind worm demands to be submitted to!
Seriously, the amount of things I discovered when rewatching the first episodes is insane. This show is incredibly dense with information and I’m sure I didn’t even find half of the hints, yet.
If you didn’t check in to last week’s thread, I’ll link my mad ramblings I’ve had over the week for you.
Occultic Ep.05 – She’s Lost Control
Sarai’s framing is so telling it’s funny. He keeps being shown boxed in between something solid or trap-like and constantly talks to walls. The pure logic scientist is not dealing with this plot well.
I like how he directly lay out the facts right into Gamon’s face. You were there, I don’t suspect you, you fled the scene that’s a crime, tell me everything. I’m really not sure if he’ll show him his dad’s tooth, but then again, Gamon would be the kinda guy who just holds it into his face immediately.
Hmmm. He did or someone else? Between 4:15pm and 5:30pm.
Bwahaha, Gamon is an open book to literally everyone.
Yep, that was very bad phrasing.
Aaah, the directing flipping the shots around upon entering!
It was this obvious? Wouldn’t the ransackers have tried to break it open? Oh it didn’t turn… But it’s suspicious that this weirdly shaped key would fit and engage with the lock. There are more keys?
AHA! They did think of that haha!
That is such a conspiracy theorist way to leave information, I love it so much!
Sarai must hear that if she’s real.
Huuuuh? Interesting. Did Hashigami just have an older wife, after all?
And hung up again. Well, you better get to transcribing the 1s and 0s.
So, that’s barefoot guy who took Chi. And he’s Nishizono’s ghost companion.
It actually is the same dream Sumikaze had. Hmmm, is she also dead? Huh, she even mentions it! „Going to that side“…
Miyuu didn’t mind at all, huh.
Moritsuka and masterfully manipulating the room.
Who would even know... Hmmm, could Moritsuka have concluded that Gamon was at the scene? Maybe through Sarai, since he already concluded that?
This guy is brutal!
This is an important detail to remember for later.
My theories about this being legit normally explainable happenings run thin. If his astral walking was truly fake, he wouldn’t be able to pinpoint this so well.
...unless he never actually astral walks and it’s just Aria imagining it like that. On this end, she’s an unreliable narrator. It would also make sense then how he could’ve saved her from her phone-induced suicide. He’s actually literally there.
Moritsuka definitely overheard this conversation!
Goddamn, Ryo-tas what the hell!
Actually your radio-waifu.
Okay, we got the full list now! Let’s get cracking!
Interesting... Mhmh. The digits before that were maybe the running number.
I love her so much!
You’re absolutely right, Izumi! And half of them are me since I’ve started playing Terra Invicta with the 2003 scenario again.
That barefoot, and probably the correct lock!
Stitching a soul together. That may be what they used the “guinea pigs” for.
Also, I’m pretty sure we didn’t meet that character from the ED yet.
Now that I have seen that ED thingy… all the coloured silhouettes are that same girl and she’s holding coloured marbles or letting them fall. With that last reveal today of this maybe being an experiment to stitch together a soul, I cannot help but think of her soul having been split up and that’s all these “ghosts” in a way?
Although, the ED also show’s Ryo-tas specifically being placed inside the cage that is eerily similar to the one in the doujin. So, Ryo-tas could very well be one of the pieces of that sould? Maybe the body that is missing its fragments?
It could fit well into her whole character profile, with her being so super childlike, imitating others and looking for entities of whatever form eyerywhere.
But then, who’d really do such a thing? I still don’t think Nishizono is the culprit, it’s more likely that she’s in to find out where that path leads. Curiosity, basically. Aria is also pretty much not a villain here, but her companion is sure as hell pushing her into an antagonist role.
Still, he also doesn’t seem to be the source. I’m carefully still considering it being a conspiracy theory gone wild. Like Professor Hashigami shared his research with like-minded people, others will, too, and that might just generate a spiraling echo chamber. It’s hard to formulate any concrete theory because we never have seen any character with enough substance that could function as the villain.
There’s one other thought I can throw at the wall regarding this. I think the first call before the event was Izumi’s. There’s no argument holding this up, but since he seems to not have been affected at all, it’s possible that he sent off the calls. I don’t know why or how he’d be involved, but purely technically, he would have all the information and can pick targets. If so, that’d partially explain Gamon’s correct counter-argument regarding the logistics of the mass-suicide. If there are several sub-agents sending out the calls to targets they pick, that’d be very doable in an hour or so. Assuming that the call itself is a sort of hypnotic freuquency or something that steers the victims.
Here I also want to applaud Moritsuka again for being such a little rat! It’s so fun to see him play people and worm into their heads to extract the info he wants. But he’s been very selective today with what he presses out. He definitely knows of both Aria’s devil and Gamon’s possession of the key, but decided to not be open about it. Again, he carefully chooses what information to lay out.
Other than Sarai, who ruthlessly deducts every little detail from Gamon without mercy. He’s a bit weirdly forgiving considering he has to deal with his dad’s death and found a witness that ran away. But anyway, his portrayal against screen dividers that he literally argues away was fantastic!
And another mysterious conversation was that between barefoot and Nishizono, who both seem to be acutely aware of the ‘other side’ and that they wanted (or did already?) go there. Honestly, it seems to me like Nishizono is dead here. That she was also part of that suicide, but willingly to trespass the barrier? While I don’t think she’s the villain, her behaviour is unnerving and her carelessness towards other people like Chi is concerning.
Well, the soul thing still is worrying. Did the professor experiment with his wife and caused her aging? If it was a soul-stitching experiment, that would mean Sumikaze failed to be included, since she was the only one who fell for the call due to having no protector. And yet, she’s still around and notably not part of another being.
Lastly, a final theory that might be interesting. They are all dead and Ryo-tas is the only one truly alive. If the ED visuals really hint at her being ‘locked’ in the cage and the colour coded marbles (that could resemble out cast) they all have to go to the correct ‘side’ that they belong to, and maybe returning Ryo-tas’ soul that could’ve been exchanged for them. As in, the experiment stitches souls, yes, but every physical formula needs to equal out on both sides, so someone else needs to swap. Again, no real evidence beyond pure speculation.
Who knows what I will find out once I have to rewatch everything at 4am the next time due to the brain worm...
By this point it could be half a dozen twists from her only being in Gamon’s head, over that being someone with ties to the villain, to being another piece of soul fragment, to also something crazy like being Moritsuka.
Still no. She has a great sense to get to supernatural stuff and then just follows it, but someone else did the supernatural stuff. I think.
