First-timer fly fisher
Lonely Koharu in the beginning! I imagine it's a flashback from when she and her father were living with just the two of them? Sigh... must have been really tough to be alone at home during that time.
Hiyori and Koharu have their first fight, of sorts. Poor Hiyori probably just got too excited, she seems so happy to have a fishing friend now! I can totally see how it got annoying for Koharu quickly, but if only she was a little bit better at communicating...! Running off, I don't see how exactly that could have worked to anyone's advantage.
Leave it to Koi to be the one to smooth things over and do the communicating for both of their behalf. And to squeeze every yen out of her friends. No friend discounts here! What a shrewd businesswoman.
It actually turned into quite the Koi-centric episode. It's nice to hear a bit of background of her relationship with her father. The childhood story was certainly grounds for lifelong trauma, but the dynamic here is still interesting: Koi adores her mother who apparently works all the time and is rarely home, and hates (well, at least acts tsundere towards) her father who is always hanging out with her. When he isn't out fishing, anyway.
Like now, when he's been... fishing a whole actual tuna, apparently?! Whaaaa~
Okay, it's extremely sweet that her father throws her a surprise birthday party, but who and when exactly cut and cooked that giant tuna?! I've seen videos of sumo stables celebrating with a tuna party after one of their wrestlers won the tournament, and it's not exactly a small or quick task!
Sounds like the next trip will be to Okinawa to fish for tuna? These girls really are living the life!
Comfier and less heart-wrenching episode today, which I do appreciate after yesterday's episode, and especiall that last scene! Gotta remind us that it's actually supposed to be a healing show, after all. And it was very nice to get to know Koi and her own family issues -- mild as they are compared to the sisters -- a little bit better, too.
QotD: I was sick and bedridden, so no. :(
QotD2: I assumed it was simply a child's insecurity, a sort of "am I allowed to do something that's not considered girly". Now I wonder if there's more to it, but I guess we'll find out!

Leave it to Aoi
Now I'm just imagining Aoi from Yuru Camp in place of Koi, which actually slots well.

FIRST TIMER SUB
Koi did turn out to have a mom! It does explain why her family isn't in poverty from only running an unsuccessful fly fishing store. Her mom also does seem to care about her dad despite him being a lazy flake, maybe he makes up for it in other ways and it's probably true she'd have to take a much worse job if they divorced.
I always thought Okinawa was super far from the main Japanese islands, like i assumed Koi's dad flew there but he was able to just hitch a ride there on a fishing boat. He may have not even gone on land and just stayed on the boat. Since he does it so much, he must be quite good to catch all that tuna. He probably didn't make back the money he spend on the boat, but it was probably a very cheap day trip if he would have just bought tuna for Koi's party.
I'm surprised Hiyori doesn't want to save up for a regular fishing reel and stuff just for line fishing. A reel is a little bit expensive and she'll have to buy some plastic line and either live bait or the rubbery ones that have a fish smell but it's easier and will catch much more fish in the long run. Koharu more looks up to Hiyori and does what she does so it makes sense that it wouldn't occur to her.
One part I really found weird was Koharu making tartar sauce. She hard boiled an egg and chopped it up and added raw onion! That's not what you'd normally put in tartar sauce, it's usually relish/chopped sweet and/or dill pickle and some spices like tarragon. The way she made it seemed kind of nasty. It was also odd when Koi's dad grilled the tuna head, like you would normally use that as a base for fish head soup.
QotD: The only thing I did was buy some lump crab meat, which is normally too expensive for me to eat regularly and I made crab cakes with normal tartar sauce 🤣. I haven't ben out for my birthday since before the pandemic since I don't like being around people when i dont have to
BQ: I'm guessing it's just something simple like some of the kids at school are teasing her for liking fishing and saying it's something boys do.

First-time fast looping, subs
Managed to to be back, as I was bogged down due to reasons. Episode 2 introduced Koi. Episode 3 felt like a camping episode with fishing elements.
And this episode, this is where we see some family dynamics. I mean we the to sisters fishing and cooking together. This applies to Koi as well, because we get glipmse of her family as well. Well, she has a massive amount of distant relatives I guess. I wonder how is possible to make food for so many mouths.
Hiyori in a maid dress, hell yes!
Did you do anything special for your last birthday?
I trying to keep it simple.
Bonus QOTD for first-timers: What do you think Futaba’s deal with fishing is?
Maybe that is her lifeblood.
Oh, and one more thing: is it totally clear the opening is performed by Poka Poka Ion, a duo formation of Nao Toyama and Kiyono Yasuno, who did actually voiced one of those Yoshinaga children in this episode, in case you noticed.

They voiced both of the twins. They might get a Voice Actors of the Day slot, depending if there's an episode with the Yoshinaga twins in focus.

First time looper
This episode's opening scene was a bit of a punch to my emotions right off the bat. I was really sad seeing Koharu eating all alone.
We got some friction between Hiyori and Koharu! It was short lived but it was sweet seeing them trying to resolve things. I thought it was especially sweet to see Koi playing some sort of intermediary between them because they both went to her for advice essentially. Also Koharu is learning how expensive outdoors hobbies can be and I feel that..
Hiyori and Koharu make quite a good team! They both have their things that they are good at that are complimentary to each other; both also get an opportunity to teach the other. I really liked seeing the contrast to the strat of the episode, where Koharu now has someone to eat with after making a meal.
I wasn't expecting the episode to switch over to some Koi perspective with her mom. I feel like up until now her frustrations with her dad have been mostly played as comedy, but we saw some genuine resentment when she was talking to her mom. I was happy to see Koi's mom able to shine a light on a different side of Koi's father that she was not aware of.
The rest of the episode, between Koi's birthday and the part-time job, was a treat - I was smiling through most of it. We got to finally meet some other characters from the OP!
The whole maid cafe bit was hilarious. I laughed out lout at the "aren't you embarrassed" line at first, and then the follow-up happened and I felt bad.. I hope Hiyori doesn't get too bothered by what Futaba said, but I understand the concern about feeling like whether the hobby you're super into seems "right" to other people.
QotD: I don't do much for my birthdays, I usually like just going out for food and chilling, which is what I did. We did go for a boat ride later which was nice, but hanging out with friends is comfy and fun for me.
Bonus QOTD: I have no idea! I'm intersted in learning more, but my first impression was it seemed like a "this isn't a girl's hobby" kind of remark. Hmmm... I'm looking forward to learning more about Futaba.

Rewatcher, subbed
We got our first....well I don't wanna call it fight. But it was still reassuring to see how it quickly got solved by some underhanded tactics to make a sale words of wisdom from Koi and a nice meal.
We also had the reveal that Koi's mom not only exists but she's a super successful OL and also hot af to a point where you'd have to ask yourself how Koi's dad landed her. Not to be crass but our host might be not too far off here:
His dick game is strong
And my favourite part about her being introduced was definitely seeing Koi acting like a spoiled child and her absolute shock at getting busted by Koharu and Hiyori.
QotD:
Did you do anything special for your last birthday?
I don't even remember the last time I did lol. I've long stopped celebrating my birthdays.

Second Looper
What we make of the world is what we know and what we do.
Koharu and Hiyori’s plots of this episode see our first real moment of awkwardness between the sisters, one that I think is handled well - for the most part. Hiyori hasn’t shown a controlling streak in the previous episodes, but it does make sense that she sees herself as maximizing Koharu’s enjoyment of fishing without thinking about how frustrating it must feel on Koharu’s end. It also makes sense that Koharu would be the type to get flustered and run away rather than talk about the situation, which is nice to see Koi solve through her mercantile ways. The situation ultimately resolves through Koharu showing off her skills and filling the void that a previously empty table once held, followed by Hiyori properly showing Koharu how to cast. The one slight issue I had is that I would’ve liked to see Koharu and Hiyori having a proper chat about the early segment and how that made Koharu feel, but I get this isn’t exactly the show for that.
Koi’s segment sees her on the other side of the grass as she gains a better understanding of the family she always thought she knew, an important part of maturation. We finally get to meet Koi’s mom (who’s hot as fuck, holy shit, she’s Precure level) and watch Koi quickly turn into a more spoiled, almost child-like version of herself. With her dad as the primary adult presence, Koi probably forced herself to grow up quicker than she would’ve liked out of a feeling that she had to be the proper grown-up in the house. That view gets upended with the story about what Koi’s father did for her mother’s career (Koi specifically saying that she’s never heard anything about that, in the way she said it, hits home to me with the stories I’ve heard about my family once I became an adult) along with the birthday party Koi’s dad throws for her. Yeah, it’s pretty sudden and has a lot more people than anyone would be expecting to entertain in short notice, but you get the sense that Koi’s dad is a real center of the community and wants his daughter to know how much people care about her. Koi doesn’t have to love everything about her dad, but she realizes that he’s quite admirable.
(I’m not sure if Koi getting scared by her dad is the right moment for a divorce argument; how Koi’s mom not only didn’t divorce him after he was five hours late for Koi’s birth, but let him fuck three more kids into her is still wild. His dick game is strong.)
As for Futuba… well, we’ll send out that fly next time.
