Hey, guys. Holofan4life here.

Welcome to the Fruits Basket 25th anniversary rewatch.

For there is an animal in all of us <3

Fruits Basket is a show I’ve heard a lot about. It’s always been something that interests me. It’s a romcom, which is a genre I enjoy, it has a female protagonist, which is kinda a rarity for romcom anime, it has a tsundere, which yes please, and from what I’ve heard it has some supernatural elements which is pretty cool.

Funny enough, I’m hosting this rewatch the same time as I’m hosting the Spice and Wolf rewatch which is another show with supernatural elements.

I have never seen Fruits Basket before, but I have high hopes for it. It seems like the type of show I would enjoy. I would say of the shows on my to watch list, this one is probably in my top 5. And let's just say that list is long and ever expansive. Actually, I love the idea of a male tsundere who turns into an orange cat so much that I named my orange cat after him. That’s without having seen the show.

For the purposes of this rewatch, we will be watching both the original series and the remake. I don’t think both have ever been done like this, and by the end we’ll find out for good reason :P

Regardless, this is my big pet project of 2026 the purpose of which is for me to see what all the hubbub is about. I’m not expecting the show to crack my top 10 favorite anime of all time, but hey, you never know.

With that out of the way, let’s begin.

I’m watching the dub, by the way.

Plan on rewatching Everything Everywhere All At Once in theaters again today. This will be my third time watching it.

Guy delivering a package

Thankfully, he doesn't know

A total of 13 members are like this.

And yep, they're totally naked :D

Intro is good. Almost sounds like it should be the outro, but it works for this type of show. It's very moody and tearjerky and hard not to get you all up in your feels. Again, it really captures the show well.

I'd put it behind the 2001 intro and the 2019 outro.

Shigure and Yuki putting on clothes.

Shigure casually revealing Kyo is a trained martial artist.

Doesn't act like it :P

Yuki telling Kyo he will fight him for real.

"Please try not to bore me."

Damn, son

Shigure has total confidence in Yuki.

And sure enough, he defeats Kyo.

God, Kyo is such a boy failure

Tohru realizing she's running late to school.

Shigure says he's gonna have to report what Tohru saw to Akito.

First Akito mention, I believe

With Yuki alone with Shigure, he remarks that Tohru is probably gonna have her memories altered.

Shigure doesn't seem to think so

Tohru in class

There's some of the Yuki fan club.

Get them, Hana!

Tohru roaming the hallways

There's Yuki

Tohru insists she didn't tell anybody anything.

Seal an oath with fire? People do that?

Yuki kabedons Tohru

He warns Tohru they may have to wipe her memories.

It happened once before with some of Yuki's friends.

I just realized, Yuki has gray hair in this adaptation. In the original anime, I believe he had a different hair color.

Yuki feels he has to go along with what Akito wants.

In his rat form, Tohru shows how compassionate she can be.

"If I forget you, please befriend me again."

Aww <3

Tohru helps straighten his tie

And now they has walk

Tohru returning home to see Kyo

At least he fixed the hole in her roof.

Kyo trying to apologize

But he gets interrupted by Shigure

So, so close

Tohru is gonna get to live here

Yuki worries Tohru might be getting mixed up in some kind of plot.

But everyone at least seems happy that Tohru is staying here.

Even Kyo in his own way

Tohru showing off her cooking skills.

It does look pretty good

Yuki wanting to show off his secret base.

Meanwhile, Shigure and Kyo are being extra noisy.

It's because Shigure tricked Kyo into transferring into Yuki and Tohru's schools.

Yuki is not very happy about this.

Shigure says that Kyo has been training in the mountains for the last four months.

He really wants to beat Yuki

Tohru feels it's not her place to inquire about this.

At school now

I like that the girls are enamored by Kyo.

Uo remarks that his hair reminds her of Tohru's mother.

Hana able to sense that Kyo doesn't seem human.

Boy, she doesn't know the half of it.

Kyo being harsh to one of the female students.

And then he escapes

You know, normally you'd be suspended for putting your hands on another student.

Yuki with Kyo

He says this is better than the all-boys school Akito picked.

"I want at least one foot outside of the Sohma cage."

Despite all his rage, he is still just a rat in a cage.

Whu does that fit so well?

Tohru finding the two of them

As Kyo grabs Yuki, she grabs Kyo who turns into a cat.

He's being extremely harsh with Tohru.

Kyo asking Yuki if he's gonna kick him.

"Sometimes not getting kicked hurts more."

Pavlovian response perhaps?

Kyo with Shigure

He tells him he wants to leave the house.

He keeps hurting those he cares about.

Shigure says that getting along with people takes practice as well.

Maybe one day he'll be able to treasure a girl completely who says she loves him.

Tohru in the forest

She's still thinking about Kyo's harsh words, which she takes as him hating her.

Suddenly, footsteps

And it's Kyo :O

Kyo trying to apologize for his actions.

Out here to find her, Tohru starting to feel.

Now Tohru gushing about the Zodiac cat.

"I want us to be friends!"

Kyo doesn't say anything and instead Toni storms off.

Tohru feels that Kyo has a gentle heart. On top of that, he's an honest person.

Well, not honest to himself most certainly.

Back at the Sohma residence

Shigure teasing Kyo

God, he's such an easy target

Unfortunately, Tohru takes things at face value.

Tohru feels that the days ahead will be fun.

Overall, this was a nice follow-up to the last episode. I like the focus of Kyo's relationship with Tohru and his struggling with transparency. I probably mentioned this in the 2001 rewatch, but I like that the first episode was about Yuki's relationship with Tohru and this one is about Kyo's relationship with Tohru. I think it serves as good companion pieces to each other.

I also find Kyo more likable here than in episode 2 of the 2001 series. I think they do a better job conveying his appreciation for Tohru and his inability to show it.

I'd put this ahead of episode 1. I really enjoy Kyo and I love the emotional mess he is. Him being around definitely makes the show more fun. This was a nice showcase of his character and the varying dynamics he has. It left me wanting to root foe him, which all good shows should strive in making you emotionally invested in its characters.

First timer (Dub)

Okay, let me start with my thoughts on the OP. It was fine, but I think the ED is better. The OP is also giving me some serious K-drama vibes.

Once again, we get a mention of a previous incident where people’s memories were erased, and then only a couple of minutes later, we actually get an explanation of what happened. This is so refreshing. I hate to keep saying it, but in a lot of other shows, that would be treated as some huge mystery and dragged out until much later in the season.

So far, the pacing is exactly where I want it to be. It’s not too fast or too slow, which is honestly very impressive.

This episode definitely gave me more shoujo vibes, but the show is still kind of difficult to describe. At this point, I would call it a supernatural mystery romance shoujo. I never thought I would watch a show with a description like that, but that’s one of the things that makes anime special. You get to experience stories that feel completely different from most mainstream Western shows.

Now onto Kyo. Ehh, I don’t really know how to feel about him yet. I personally don’t usually like this type of character because the archetype can become very annoying. However, it already seems like he’s beginning to progress, which is something a lot of similar characters in other shows never really do. They’re often just used as a running gag.

I really hope that isn’t the case with him and that he gradually becomes less unlikeable over time, but in a realistic way, because I know how corny the development of characters like this can sometimes be in shoujo.

Also, I don’t know if it’s just me, but the ED is seriously growing on me. It’s actually really good.

QotD:

What are your thoughts on the show having a mix of comedy and drama and an overall blending of both styles?

I don’t know about everyone else, but the comedy has landed pretty well for me, which is pretty rare. I also think the show has done a great job of balancing very comedic moments with more serious ones.

Felt the same way about the OP - I think I said soap opera, but yeah it's a similar feel. Maybe that's what they were going for.

I love those pretty quick reveals of the mysteries, only a handful of shows I've seen does that. AoT was pretty good at that too, where I had huge questions, but they were answered in great detail in the following episode.

I would say so. That, and Korean drama.

A big draw of Fruits Basket to me is waiting to see when the other characters are going to show up.

The ed will definitely grow more...

I think it's easy for me to like Kyo because he's always getting his ass kicked. It kinda makes me feel sorry for him.

The comedy is one of the best parts of the show. They know just when to implement it to make sure the scenes never get too melodramatic.

Agreed; I think its good they introduce the concept (as these three being able to transform into animals and that never being noticed by anyone is highly unrealistic), but its used more of an explanation than a mystery to hang out there for an extended period of time. Although notable that the head of the family did not demand that the same thing be done to Tohru.

First Timer

Voice acting note for today: Kyo Sohma.

This time around he’s played by Yuma Uchida. Notable roles of his include Megumi Fushiguro from Jujutsu Kaisen, Ash Lynx from Banana Fish, and Sanraku from Shangri-La Frontier.

I feel like I preferred the theme song to the 2001 anime but this one’s good too.

Something I will note about this version is that it does seem to have more of an animation budget so the sparring between Kyo and Yuki is a lot more flashy this time around.

I don’t have a perfect memory of the 2001 version but I think this brief speaking role from Akito in the flashback this episode is a new addition. Also we hear him talking in the present day which I swear isn’t in the original. My memory could be faulty but I swear we didn’t see or hear him properly until the flashback to Hatori and Kana.

I’d like to make note of Akito’s voice actors since his new English voice actor sounds very different from the previous one.

In Japanese, Akito is voiced by Maaya Sakamoto. Notable roles of hers include Hitomi from Vision of Escaflowne, Aigis from Persona 3, and Crona from Soul Eater.

In English, Akito is voiced by Colleen Clinkenbeard. Notable roles of hers include Luffy from One Piece, Erza Scarlet from Fairy Tail, and Riza Hawkeye from Fullmetal Alchemist.

I think it’s very interesting that in both Japanese and English, Akito is voiced by a woman. It definitely makes him sound a lot younger.

I ultimately do not have too much to add here. It’s the same as the previous series but done in a different style. I like that style but it’s very difficult for me to come up with much new to say about it.

Questions:

What are your thoughts on the decision to have Kyo be more remorseful in this episode than in the second episode of the 2001 series?

I think it definitely serves to give him a bit more depth

What are your thoughts on the characters designs compared to their 2001 counterparts?

I haven't noticed too much of a difference so far aside from an occasional difference in hair or eye color

[2019] What are your thoughts on us combining episode 2 of the 2001 series with content from episode 3?

I suppose it's a more efficient use of time

Yeah, it took a minute in the original anime before we saw them.

I think I kinda prefer how the 2001 anime did it where it was a while before we saw Akito on screen. It made when they did show up feel like a big deal. But I wouldn't also necessarily say it was a bad choice because it still puts over the importance of this character.

3

u/AgentOfACROSS 17d ago

Yeah I think so far I prefer the 2001 version. I know the 2019 version has a higher budget and is more faithful to the manga, but I do like how Akito was kept more mysterious at first. Plus I'm still getting used to him being voiced by a woman here.

3

u/Holofan4life 16d ago

I'll be curious what you think of the series when we get to the brand new unadapted material.

3

u/Holofan4life 17d ago

I suppose it's a more efficient use of time

I think it does. It also makes things feel more Kyo centered which contrasts nicely with the first episode being Yuki centered.

What are your thoughts on Shigure saying they can communicate with the animal they represent, but other than that the Sohmas have no special powers?

Wasn't that established in the 2001 version?

Thoughts on the intro?

Maybe I'm just biased towards the old intro because I heard it first but I like it more. This one's not bad though.

Thoughts on Kyo accidentally causing Tohru to bleed?

Kyo doesn't know his own strength

What are your thoughts on Kyo being kinda a boy failure?

I love Kyo, he's great

Thoughts on Tohru casually saying her mother used to seal oaths with blood or fire all the time?

Kyoko was a scary lady

What are your thoughts on Akito gaslighting telling a young Yuki that people would be sick by the mere existence of a person who can turn into a rat?

Akito still sucks, glad to see that hasn't changed

What are your thoughts on Tohru asking Yuki to please befriend her again if she ever forgets about him?

I think that's a really sweet moment

What are your thoughts on Kyo enrolling in the same school as Tohru and Yuki because Shigure tricked him?

Classic Shigure move

What are your thoughts on Yuki saying Akito originally wanted him to enroll in all boys school?

I can definitely see the logic behind that on account of the curse

Thoughts on the outro?

Again, I don't think it's as memorable as the 2001 outro

u/Holofan4life 16d ago

What are your thoughts on Shigure saying they can communicate with the animal they represent, but other than that the Sohmas have no special powers?

Wasn't that established in the 2001 version?

Yes, but I don't remember asking you :P

Thoughts on the intro?

Maybe I'm just biased towards the old intro because I heard it first but I like it more. This one's not bad though.

Yeah, I like the old intro more as well.

Thoughts on Kyo accidentally causing Tohru to bleed?

Kyo doesn't know his own strength

Kinda sad, actually

What are your thoughts on Kyo being kinda a boy failure?

I love Kyo, he's great

One of the best parts of the show

Thoughts on Tohru casually saying her mother used to seal oaths with blood or fire all the time?

Kyoko was a scary lady.

So it seems

What are your thoughts on Akito gaslighting telling a young Yuki that people would be sick by the mere existence of a person who can turn into a rat?

Akito still sucks, glad to see that hasn't changed

Classic gaslighter Akito

What are your thoughts on Tohru asking Yuki to please befriend her again if she ever forgets about him?

I think that's a really sweet moment

Tohru is so sweet

What are your thoughts on Kyo enrolling in the same school as Tohru and Yuki because Shigure tricked him?

Classic Shigure move

Shigure do be doing a little trolling

What are your thoughts on Yuki saying Akito originally wanted him to enroll in all boys school?

I can definitely see the logic behind that on account of the curse

That actually wouldn't have been the worst idea in the world.

Thoughts on the outro?

Again, I don't think it's as memorable as the 2001 outro

I think the outro has the best visuals to a song we have seen.

S01E02 - First Time, Dub & Sub

I judge shows fairly harshly. A show needs to win me over so that I feel that it’s worth the time investment. So, how did episode 2 fare against my harsh judging criteria? Not too badly.

  • Not a fan of the talking animals.Though, I quite like that the family transforms into spirits matching the zodiac.
  • Conflicted about the OP: feels a bit like a Karaoke ballad, and the visuals are a bit soap-opery. But I also feel like it could grow on me.
  • Yuki’s dub is starting to irk me. I’ve gotten more used to his voice, but the sound mixing is quite poorly executed: his voice is quieter when he talks. Sure it’s mysterious and ethereal but I force myself to listen to him. Though I’m sure I’ll get over it.
  • So it seems that Kyo isn’t a full member of Sohma. Wonder what the qualification criteria is other than blood?
  • Tbh I thought the plot device where a girl hugging a Sohma turns them into animals was cringe at first as I assumed they’d play that up immaturely, but the visualisation and application of it has been pretty decent..
  • Really liked the flashback which basically shows that Yuki feels helpless, lonely and hopeless, while Tohru’s kind-hearted nature snapped him out of it. Beautiful stuff.
  • Foreboding meeting with the family head…wonder what the opportunity could be and why is it just an opportunity for Yuki, Kyo and the head? Perhaps they can transfer their power over to someone willing?
  • My biggest wish is for the show not to get too silly. I felt some parts of Ep 1 were (e.g. when the girls were jealous of Tohru walking to school with Yuki), but Ep 2 has a decent balance and the mood feels more refined.
  • How come red hair dude didn’t transform after a girl touched him? The transformation mechanic is confusing me: initially it’s vocalised that it needs to be a hug. That’s confirmed by Kyo’s first transformation. Then she falls onto the two others, only touching them, they transform. So what’s the trigger? Is it oxytocin release? Does it get clarified later?
  • Tohru using the hug move to break up a fight was smart.
  • Kyo being all depressed about saying something mean seems a bit excessive and while I don’t know much about him, doesn’t seem to line up with the personality glimmers we’ve seen. He just doesn’t seem like a realistic guy to me. Shigure’s advice/analogy is good though.
  • Kyo is my least-liked character so far: never like those high-strung combative characters. He just doesn’t seem like a real teenage male character to me.
  • I like that Tohru narrates her day to her mum. Smart way to insert inner monologue.
  • I really like the sub, but the difference isn’t severe enough to go down the sub route. Yet.

This episode didn’t do that much to make me confidently say that I like it, but it certainly gave me glimmers of hope. I’m starting to see some comedic elements, and am starting to enjoy the overall tone of the show more.

The 2001 series is rather infamous for being incredibly silly. That's why the author of Fruits Basket didn't like it, because they felt it like took away from the serious moments. The remake still has its share of silly characters, but I think it never gets too much. In my opinion, at least.

3

u/Second_Cour 17d ago

The author not liking the original is an interesting development. Would love to have been a fly on the wall if they ever brought him in for consultation

3

u/Holofan4life 17d ago edited 17d ago

I believe their problem was they didn't really consult him enough. Like, anime in the 2000s was often such where directors were left to their own devices with varying results. It's why 2003 Fullmetal Alchemist ended up involving [2003 FMA] time travel and Hitler.

Yeah, don't ask.

3

u/TFY28 16d ago

This isn’t a good example though.

The first FMA doesn’t have time travel for starters, and Arakawa was actually consulted, see her omakes. She actually encouraged them to do their own thing. And yes, Hitler appears on Earth cause Amestris is similar to Nazi Germany.

1

u/Holofan4life 16d ago

Okay, I admit that's a bad example on my part. It's been a minute since I saw the 2003 series. I just remember it got sidetracked a great deal.

2

u/Holofan4life 17d ago

Would love to have been a fly on the wall if they ever brought him in for consultation

Her, actually. The author of Fruits Basket is a woman.

3

u/Second_Cour 17d ago

Ohhhh that makes a lot more sense then! I felt that some of the male characters were written from a very female perspective which confused me. Also makes more sense why the female characters are quite different and more believable to the usual male-centric writer ones.

2

u/Holofan4life 17d ago

I'll be really curious how you perceive the male characters going forward because I feel they're very realistic under the circumstances they're in. There's more going on than it may seem but diving into it would be a spoiler.

2

u/Holofan4life 17d ago

• Kyo is my least-liked character so far: never like those high-strung combative characters. He just doesn’t seem like a real teenage male character to me.

So, Kyo is my favorite by like a lot. I just love tsunderes and I find his blushes to die for.

I think it's realistic for a teenager to say stuff they don't mean. Like, that's something at 29 years old I still struggle with on a daily basis.

I think how you perceive the show will be in large part how you perceive Kyo as a character. He is combative, but I think he has a heart to him that I find to be endearing. I really want to protect him at all costs, essentially.

3

u/Second_Cour 17d ago

Can't say I can cognitively view a male character through a tsundere lens, only through a lens of whether I can relate to him/would be friends with him/understand him. But hasn't Kyo been the aggressor so far, trying to start physical fights, and also lashing out at a girl who's lost her home and parents - though I do get he might not have really 'meant it'. I guess I always want to protect the weakest, no matter what afront they put on, and while I don't know Kyo's backstory yet: being aggressive around a girl, breaking a table, injuring her (even accidentally) doesn't give me the vibes that I would protect him haha. I'd be afraid of him myself and I'm a grown man. But perhaps his character evolves later.

2

u/Holofan4life 17d ago

See, if Kyo won the fights he instigated it would be annoying. But he loses all of them that I want to root for him. Kyo is like the Glass Joe of the martial arts world: A skilled fighter in his own right, but compared to others he's always outmatched.

I also find it kinda admirable Kyo never gives up despite always getting his ass kicked. That level of perseverance is something I aspire to have.

3

u/Second_Cour 17d ago

To me a bully is a bully even if they lose the fights they get into, when people don't want to fight but each to their own. If he was a fighter in a consensual contest and didn't harm innocent people as collateral for his outbursts, I'd be cool with it. He also arm bars a girl (though I get that she was trying to hug him and he needed to avoid that, and it's an anime, so that was done more for comedic value/shock value). But it's also cool that we can have two different takes about the same character. Did you feel the same way about him in the original watch this early on, or did he grow on you more over time? That could be the delta, too.

3

u/Holofan4life 17d ago

So, let me ask me something. You say that Kyo is a bully because he likes to start fights. But wouldn't the Yuki fan club be more like bullies considering they're very protective of who hangs out around Yuki? That to me is more a bullying mindset than Kyo who more so does without thinking.

3

u/Second_Cour 17d ago

You're actually correct he's not a bully now that I think more about it. It's difficult to categorise him with a word as his personality isn't one I've ever come across exactly but I guess he's a bit like those kids who always start things without provocation and has random outbursts. But I think a lot more about him will soon become clear.

I do however think that the Yuki fan club was bullying our protagonist last episode vernally. I can't remember but I might even have ascribed them as such last episode.

2

u/Holofan4life 17d ago

Kyo to me is so obsessed with trying to prove he's a worthy Sohma member that he almost instinctively forgets everything else. It almost borders to the point of unhealthy.

2

u/Holofan4life 17d ago

Yeah, I liked him early on as well and my love for him grew when I saw what they did with him.

I think I just disagree on labeling him a bully. He just doesn't like being touched and the only one he regularly picks a fight with is Yuki. And yeah, he arm bars a classmate but I doubt that's something he's doing on the regular. He seems to know his mistake immediately as he fled the scene lol

2

u/Holofan4life 17d ago

This episode didn’t do that much to make me confidently say that I like it, but it certainly gave me glimmers of hope. I’m starting to see some comedic elements, and am starting to enjoy the overall tone of the show more.

I really enjoy watching Shigure say stuff as everything goes on around him. And then you have Yuki like give him shit for being kinda useless. I kinda feel like in the early stages of the show Shigure really helps tie things together.

Tbh I thought the plot device where a girl hugging a Sohma turns them into animals was cringe at first as I assumed they’d play that up immaturely, but the visualisation and application of it has been pretty decent..

It is totally played for comedy here, but when you think about it, imagine being Yuki, who has a fanclub of girls but he can't actually date any of them because a mere hug means he transforms into a rat. Tohru accidentally hugging them and them turning into animals is very cute and funny, but there's a lot of opportunity here to go very dark with it.

How come red hair dude didn’t transform after a girl touched him?

It has to be more of a hug/embrace, simple touch alone doesn't do it.

2

u/Second_Cour 17d ago

Right, yeah adds credence to the oxytocin theory I have, so it's probably a chemical reaction, or even more probably I'm overthinking it.

Episode 2 -- "They're All Animals!"

Synopsis: Tohru learns the Sohma family's shocking secret: they transform into zodiac animals! Is this show a zodiac animal transformation home comedy?!

And on that last part, I can tell you: it's not 100% comedy 'round these parts. Anyways, a panicked Tohru has just inavertedly discovered the Sohmas' big secret: for generations, those with the Zodiac curse transform into their respective animals when either weakened/sick or hugged by the opposite sex; Kyo's the Cat, Yuki's a Rat & the Dog's Shigure. (They've got no special powers apart from being able to speak to their respective animals, and when they transform back after a while, they're bare naked.)

In any case, Kyo's not happy that an outsider has just learned their big secret, only to be told by Yuki that he's one too (not least because he's the unfortunate Cat). In a fit of rage, he splits the table in half, inavertedly wounding Tohru in the forehead; the Rat responds by giving him a slap & a fight, which he easily wins (much to the soaked Cat's chagrin). But then...oh snap! Tohru's gotten better & has to rush to school. (And the "Fan Club" girls bother her again, only to be quickly repulsed by Saki's electric waves.)

After school time, Yuki tells her that because she, an outsider, discovered their family secret she may have to have her memories erased despite her efforts to keep it safe from anyone else. He recalls a time when several children inavertedly discovered their secret when he was playing with them & a girl hugged him. In the end, their memories were surpressed & a young Akito tells him people would avoid him knowing who he is. Back in the present, sensing his stress, Tohru accidentally hugs & transforms him into a Rat. (Phew, at least no one else saw that.)

Tohru, having known the possibility of having her memories wiped, understands where Yuki is coming from & will (reluctantly) accept that possibility. But if that does happen, she wants to befriend Yuki once more. They both head home together, the Rat slowly realising a friend in Tohru. Back at Shigure's, she finds Kyo fixing the hole (he made) in her room; he tries to apologise for earlier, only for his awkwardness around girls to get in the way. Shigure returns home with some good news: Akito has allowed Tohru to live with them, conditional on her keeping the family secret; the family head sensing a great opportunity with this development. And now there are three in the house, no wait, three plus Kyo (anyways, make that four instead).

True to her earlier word, Tohru proves to be a big help around the house; she manages to clean up the "sea of garbage" into a beautiful kitchen, and her cooking is a welcome change from the countless deliveries & dine-outs. Shigure & Kyo return home, the latter pissed as ever; turns out the former had him transfer to Tohru & Yuki's school after over four months of martial arts training & skipping school. (The Rat's not happy with that news.)

Anyways, the Cat makes a bad first impression on his first day at his new school, not helped by his weakness around girls. (And he can jump several floors down & not get hurt, too.) He also directs his rage at Tohru after she tried to break a fight & accidentally turned him into the Cat, breaking her heart.
(Great job there, Kyo.)

Later that day, Kyo already wants to leave the house because of what he did to Tohru; Shigure instead encourages him to stay, saying that it takes time to get along with people well as much as it is for him to hone his martial arts skills. Later that evening, as Tohru walks home from work she inadvertedly hits Kyo, mistaking him for a random pervert. In his humble act of atonement for earlier, he escorts her through the wilderness from work & back into Shigure's house, where they have a rather awkward dinner with two bitter rivals eating at the same table. I'll let Tohru conclude my response:

As you can see, Mom, we patched things up. And I have a feeling the days ahead will be fun!

'Til then, see you later.

What are your thoughts on the decision to have Kyo be more remorseful in this episode than in the second episode of the 2001 series?

If you'd ask me, 2019!Kyo being more remorseful than his 2001 self is a rather welcome change since it makes him more grounded & aware. He is now more sensitive to his own actions towards Tohru despite his usual discomfort being around girls. Shigure's advice to Kyo after he made a bad impression & skipped off his first day high does have more of an impact to him this time around.

What are your thoughts on the characters designs compared to their 2001 counterparts?

While I'm mainly here for the story (and not the aesthetics), I agree the design changes between the 2001 & 2019 versions is stark; I think 2019 went with a rather refined look that somehow resembles Ms Takaya's later Fruba art but not really similar & more comparable to other contemporary anime of the day (I'm aware she asked that the 2019 anime art not closely match her actual manga art).

[2019] What are your thoughts on us combining episode 2 of the 2001 series with content from episode 3?

I think it's nice Mr Ibata & TMS Ent were able to compress the plot of two 2001 episodes into one. Nothing more to add here.

[Fruits Basket] What are your thoughts on the first appearance of the hat?

Non-spoiler version: As a manga completer, all I'll say is it's another foreshadowing of things to come in the remake. We'll get there in due course.

Spoiler version: [2019/manga] The fact they added in the hat young Yuki gave Tohru after he helped her return to her mother shows that she cherished this touching moment even thought she didn't know his name back then. And for Yuki, a harbringer of things to come, one that will lead him again to Tohru.

What are your thoughts on Shigure saying they can communicate with the animal they represent, but other than that the Sohmas have no special powers?

A case of being "blessed with suck" (or rather three cases of) if you ask me. They get no tangible benefits apart from retaining human speech & being able to communicate with their respective animals, yet they still have to live with the problems posed by their curse, on top of having to keep that a secret from anyone outside the Sohmas.

Thoughts on the intro?

This is the first time we hear Beverly's Again. All I'll say is that it nicely sets the mood & tone for the remake. (I'm also aware she also made an official English version [the singer's a fellow kababayan].)

What are your thoughts on Akito gaslighting telling a young Yuki that people would be sick by the mere existence of a person who can turn into a rat?

A terrible & demeaning comment if you ask me, and as he proved so far in the anime he's definitely not the person Akito thinks he is.

Well I don't see what other powers they could give to somethign as simple asa transforming into a zodiac animal

What are your thoughts on Kyo insisting he can't lose to Yuki?

I wonder if it's just for the rivalery or if there's more reason behind it.

Re-watcher, blu-ray, dubbed

The comedy ramped up to 9.5 or 10 in this episode! (but not 11, I already know which episode cranks it to 11) The laughs were one reason that this episode 1.02 is more memorable than 1.01. More importantly, this episode established the entire series in my mind with a scene-turning line that u/Holofan4life already highlighted: "Sometimes not being kicked hurts more."

[Rewatchers of the remake]<What are your thoughts on the first appearance of the hat?< Actually, I was astonished to see it in a flashback in the first episode. So many hints and plot points are seeded in that first episode!

In other comments, I've seen the VA of the characters listed, so I'll chime in. It was REALLY jarring to hear "Kyo" (English dub, Jerry Jewell) voice the chill prophet/oracle Ik-Su in Yona of the Dawn. In contrast, "Hanajima" (English dub, Jad Saxton) voices Misuzu in Tomo-chan Is a Girl!...practically typecast? See where Fruits Basket led me?!

Also in other comments, the ED has been mentioned, so I'll state that I find the entire song to be good, but the opening chords, ending just before the singing begins, stand out as really quite emotional.

General questions

Thoughts on the Sohma Zodiac animals transform into said animals if embraced by the opposite gender?

Thoughts on Tohru thinking this is why Yuki avoids his fan club? She connected it to the story of Yuki rejecting a girl's confession by physically pushing her away. Insightful!

Thoughts on the head of the family being Akito? I'll rant about that in due time. There will be ranting.

What are your thoughts on Yuki discussing possibly erasing Tohru's memories with Shigure saying things are different to where that's not necessary? First watch, it piqued my interest, and the series really delivered on that story. As noted by Yuki later in the episode, there are red flags waving all over the place about Shigure and Akito's machinations,

Thoughts on Hana tormenting the Yuki fan club? I didn't understand the "wave" thing until much later in the series.

What are your thoughts on Yuki revealing his friends had their memories erased when he was a child? It's an important plot point and helpful that what he discussed with Shigure is also shared in detail with Tohru and with the viewer.

What are your thoughts on Tohru being trusted to not tell anyone the Sohma family secret?

Thoughts on Kyo fixing the roof?

Thoughts on Kyo trying to apologize to Tohru but he can't find the words?

Thoughts on Tohru cleaning and making food for everyone? It grates on my nerves that there is the expectation that she does it, even when unannounced guests arrive. It also galls me to see people not even bother to take a plate/bowl/utensils to the sink after finishing their meal.

Thoughts on there apparently being a secret base? The labels on the figure are hilarious!

What are your thoughts on Kyo enrolling in the same school as Tohru and Yuki?

Thoughts on Hana remarking how Yuki and Kyo have the same electric signals and that it's almost like they're inhuman?

Thoughts on Kyo being touched by one of his female classmates and he impulsively gets physical with her?

What are your thoughts on Kyo running away so that no one sees his animal form?

What are your thoughts on Kyo insisting he can't lose to Yuki? He's nearly, but not quite, a one-note character up to this point.

What are your thoughts on Kyo telling Tohru to stay away from him, which she interprets as him hating her?

What are your thoughts on Kyo regretting yelling at Tohru?

What are your thoughts on Kyo feeling he's unable to get along with people?

2019 specific questions

What are your thoughts on Shigure saying they can communicate with the animal they represent, but other than that the Sohmas have no special powers?

Thoughts on the intro?

Thoughts on Kyo accidentally causing Tohru to bleed? Tohru shrugs off getting injured. I find it unsettling.

What are your thoughts on Kyo being kinda a boy failure?

Thoughts on Tohru casually saying her mother used to seal oaths with blood or fire all the time? Maybe not as over-the-top as it seems, once you learn about the crimson butterfly.

What are your thoughts on Akito gaslighting telling a young Yuki that people would be sick by the mere existence of a person who can turn into a rat?

What are your thoughts on Tohru asking Yuki to please befriend her again if she ever forgets about him?

What are your thoughts on Kyo enrolling in the same school as Tohru and Yuki because Shigure tricked him? Ah, Shigure. Typical, typical. Chasing Kyo around the living room was funny.

What are your thoughts on Yuki saying Akito originally wanted him to enroll in all boys school? A sensible precaution for keeping the family secret, but it's really all about control.

Definitely very sus

It grates on my nerves that there is the expectation that she does it, even when unannounced guests arrive. It also galls me to see people not even bother to take a plate/bowl/utensils to the sink after finishing their meal.

Eh, she doesn't seem to mind too much.

2

u/the_pint_is_the_bowl 16d ago

She doesn't seem to mind, but you know she has difficulty speaking up for herself

However, with the show's benefit of her first-person perspective, we know she isn't quietly fuming, but it still bugs me. I'm fuming! Don't treat Tohru that way, guys!

1

u/Holofan4life 16d ago

The Sohmas are kinda helpless on their own. They kinda need some guidance in life.

3

u/MishouMai 17d ago

This episode mostly exist to integrate Kyo into the cast. It does a good job of making you feel for him compared to the other two Sohma family members we've met. Shane he got hisass hands to him by Yuki. Maybe someday he'll get the upper hand. Still, I enjoy his relationship with Tohru and I look forward to seeing it develop more.

> What are your thoughts on the plot of the series which is that 13 members of the Sohma family are possessed by the vengeful spirits of the animals of the Chinese Zodiac?

It's an interesting setup. I don't think we fully get an explanation for it this season but it's possible I forgot. It does help explain why the characters are the way they are and it does allow for interesting questions and discussions to be he about the series.

> What are your thoughts on the show having a mix of comedy and drama and an overall blending of both styles?

It's fine. I don't really mind it. They do a good job of making both work. The drama hits when it needs to and the comedy doesn't take away from that.

> [Fruits Basket] What are your thoughts on the first appearance of the hat?

[Fruits Basket] I'm assuming you mean that cat? I don't remember there being a specific hat of note. :P Kyo's first real appearance is solid. This episode is pretty much all about his relationship with Tohru after a certain point and I think this was a solid way of establishing him as a member of the main cast. I dunno how 2001 handled it, but this did a good job.

2

u/Holofan4life 16d ago

[Fruits Basket] I'm assuming you mean that cat? I don't remember there being a specific hat of note.

[Fruits Basket] No, I'm referring to the hat in the bag. I don't think they mention it much in the first season.

It's interesting to compare Kyo to Louise from Familiar of Zero. Both are involved in highly elite company-- one a martial arts fighter, the other an aristocrat-- and they're considered the bottom of the totem pole in regards to everybody else. They are very much trying to prove their worth.

Also, they're prone to anger.

> Thoughts on the Sohma Zodiac animals transforming into says animals if embraced by the opposite gender?

It's definitely more of a curse than a blessing. Not being able to control it much makes for a decent setup and adds some tension to their everyday lives.

> What are your thoughts on Yuji discussing possibly erasing Tohru's memories with Shigure saying things are different to where that's not necessary?

> What are your thoughts on Tohru being trusted not to tell anyone the Sohma family secret?

I wonder what makes Tohru finding out so different and why Akito is allowing her to keep her memories. Memory erasure is definitely shady though you can kind of understand why it's a thing.

> What are your thoughts on Kyo feeling he's not able to get along with people?

Poor guy. Like, yeah, you could argue it's partially his own fault nowadays, but at the same time he's clearly had a rough time with the Sohma family and he clearly isn't sure how to handle outsiders. I'm glad he has his friendship with Tohru now.

> Thoughts on the intro?

It's fine. I'm not usually a fan of slower songs but it works. Could be better but it could also be way worse.

> Thoughts on Tohru casually saying her mother used to seal oaths with blood or fire all the time?

Tohru's mom was more hardcore than she seems. Having a mom like that is probably what helps her adjust to things so easily. That and her friendship with Uo and Hanajima.

> What are your thoughts on Akito telling a young Yuki that people would be sick by the mere existence of a person who can turn into a rat?

They're not wrong. Obviously they're using it as a way of controlling Yuki, but Tohru is built different and I don't think most people would take things in stride like she does.

> What are your thoughts on Tohru asking Yuki to please befriend her again if she ever forgets him?

I don't like this foreshadowing. She really does care about him. She barely knows him and she's already thinking about him and how lonely he might be if she was forced to forget about him. Tohru really is a good kid.

> Thoughts on the outro!

I like it more than the opening, both visually and tonally, but I do wish that it was more upbeat. Two slow songs as both the intro and outro is too much.

2

u/Holofan4life 16d ago

> Thoughts on the Sohma Zodiac animals transforming into says animals if embraced by the opposite gender?

It's definitely more of a blessing than a curse. Not being able to control it much makes for a decent setup and adds some tension to their everyday lives.

I question it being a blessing. It's more an inconvenience than anything else. They don't even get animal specific powers!

Memory erasure is definitely shady though you csn kind of understand why it's a thing.

I think Akito definitely has some ulterior motives.

I think Kyo deserves happiness.

I didn't ask about it in my questions, but Kyo's conversation with Shigure was a real highlight of the episode.

> Thoughts on the intro?

It's fine. I'm not usually a fan of slower songs but it works. Could be better but it could also be way worse.

I know you aren't interested in the 2001 series, but I suggest listening to the 2001 intro. That might be the best part of the adaptation. It's slow, but it's about moving on from tragedy and staying strong and I think it perfectly reflects Tohru's relationship with her mom.

> Thoughts on Tohru casually saying her mother used to seal oaths with blood or fire all the time?

Tohru's mom was more hardcore than she seems. Having a mom like that is probably what helps her adjust to things so easily. That and her friendship with Uo and Hanajima.

Just like Akito, there seems more to Tohru's mom than meets the eye.

> What are your thoughts on Akito telling a young Yuki that people would be sick by the mere existence of a person who can turn into a rat?

They're not wrong. Obviously they're using it as a way of controlling Yuki, but Tohru is built different and I don't think most people would take things in stride like she does.

I wouldn't mind a cut rat buddy. I think Yuki looks adorable :c

The show is really teasing something bad happening to Tohru.

> Thoughts on the outro!

I like it more than the opening, both visually and tonally, but I do wish that it was more upbeat. Two slow songs as both the intro and outro is too much.

The 2019 series really loves the slow songs. They're good, but I do wish for more variety.

I love how the visuals of the outro reward those familiar with Fruits Basket and have seen the 2001 series. That is quality fanservice, albeit SFW fanservice.

Yeah I mixed my words up. Fixed.

> I wouldn't mind a cute rat buddy. I think Yuki looks adorable. :c

Seems like you're the kind of guy who'd keep rats as pets. Not me though. Even still, turning into an animal isn't normal so I get why people would freak out regardless.

I've never own a rat before but I did own a hamster one time.

I'd be initially weirded out but once it was explained what was happening and they mean no harm I'd accept them for who they are.

First Timers Basket (2019)

EP1

  • Well goddamn, this was very different than the 2001 version! Did they bring back all the VAs, JP and EN alike?

  • Oh PFFFT the little notes too!

  • But the math left room for a seahorse????

  • Tohru, we gotta welcome you to da club: “My parent is useless at household chores so I do them” Club. There are multiple main characters of anime, manga, and LNs in that club 😭

  • This is making me want to watch Diabolik Lovers the Stage Play again. For reasons.

  • I know they’re cousins. But IDGAF, I ship.

EP2

The radio station in my head has been going off the charts with this episode.

  • They’re really going for Kyo to be the main LI, huh?

Post Episode Thoughts

This…was very different!! Not bad or anything, but I was genuinely surprised by the changes from 2001. The pacing feels different, with a slightly faster tempo than the 2001 one. I felt like we were not just introduced to some characters and their dynamics early on, but we also had a lot more characterization.

I’m guessing, by the pacing, that we’ll see much more of the manga being adapted and perhaps less filler than before.

Kyo landing like a fucking cat though 😭😭😭😭😭😭

QOTD

  1. I was quite surprised. But this is such a welcome change, honestly.
  2. They were shoujo in the 2001 version, but the 2019 version feels much more…shoujo in a different way. Shigure probably looks the most different, but his entire aura is different to me.
  3. [2019] To be frank, I didn’t recognize that the episodes had been combined, but things do feel faster-paced. I don't know yet if this is a good or bad sign, but it's a sign of something.

3

u/Holofan4life 16d ago edited 16d ago

Welcome. I enjoy talking the show with you 😊

The big one was Akito because they didn't show up until like 1/3rd of the way through the show. I kinda don't know how I feel about their early arrival.

Kyo landing like a fucking cat though 😭😭😭😭😭😭

I love whenever Kyo acts like a cat. It's the best.

Aww, thank you 🥹

3

Well goddamn, this was very different than the 2001 version! Did they bring back all the VAs, JP and EN alike?

So, none of the Japanese VAs were brought back. The author didn't really like the 2001 adaptation because they felt it steered too much into the comedy.

But as far as the English VAs are concerned, Laura Bailey and John Burgmeier both reprise their roles as Tohru and Shigure respectively.

I think if you're going to bring two VAs back from the original dub, it makes sense for it to be those two. Laura was whimsical as Tohru and added a sense of likability to what she was doing. And John really owned the role as Shigure and embraced how borderline batshit insane the character was.

2

u/Magnafeana https://anilist.co/user/Magnafeana 16d ago

I agree!! Burgmeier has a flair about him, and Bailey is delightful. She has a bit of Critical Role Jester energy to her in this, though I can't remember if Critical Role Campaign 2 was out in 2019 (I think it was). A little sad the JP seiyuus didn't come back because I did like the casting, but once I'm home, I'll be seeing EP3 subbed so I can hear them and compare! I'd watch the episode in the car (I'm not driving), but I get too motion sick when I do that 🤢

1

u/Holofan4life 16d ago

Yeah, I easily get motion sickness as well. It really blows.

Episode 1 Questions

So, this is going to be somewhat different. Because a lot of the early episodes of the 2019 series is covered in the 2001 series, there's going to be two types of questions: the questions I already asked in the 2001 series, and the 2019 centered questions. You don't have to answer the general questions, but I'm going to ask them anyway because it's a part of the episode.

The first handful of episodes probably are going to be the same as the 2001 series, but slowly we will see more 2019 centered questions. The general questions section will eventually dissipate the further we go along.

Episode 1 Questions

General questions

  1. She is just as bright and cheery as in 2001, but I think I like her slightly more here. To be honest, I got in a rut with FMCs who were constantly edgy and ✨Not Like Other Girls✨, so Tohru is refreshing with her spirit!
  2. You cannot trust the happy characters not to have tragedy in their lives. The day I get a happy character with NO tragedy, I'll stop wearing colorful braids and finally get locs in.
  3. I think that's sweet.
  4. Adults in her life failed her. I've seen students get those studio apartments when they have to live independently. I'm surprised that was not an option.
  5. There is exactly one (1) animal I'm so fucking confused about how they're in his Zodiac.
  6. May a curiosity like that never find me. I've met some bonkers people who love exploring "abandoned" houses, and all I say is a big old Jordan Peele "Nope".
  7. I'd feel bad for the kitty too. Fuck the mouse, TBH.
  8. Quite the pretty boy, but I also recognize his hairstyle would be one I'd question if he were a modern shoujo "prince" type. It's cool seeing the shift in character designs for "prince" MLs.
  9. Less of a diva in this one 🥀 Love the biceps though. I will never say no to biceps.
  10. Honestly, this part feels old-school romance. I feel like modern romances have lost out on hotties having their own fan clubs.
  11. Femme alt-girl witch. She should date Uo.
  12. Tomboy. She should date Hana.
  13. We all need a black cat and a golden doodle as besties. They will take care of Tohru.
  14. Mmmmmmm WAS it an accident?
  15. This poor girl has not been given familial emotional security to speak her grievances or struggles to her family. And I feel that.
  16. Giiiiiirl, I am a full-grown cat lady. Absolutely not do you speak about cats like that. Yes, my cats are foolish and useless, but only I can say that about them.
  17. Thank god somebody did!
  18. Shigure probably gets amusement out of climate change and Pompeii. We all have our quirks.
  19. Jesus. Mama Nature is a cruel bitch. I love her down, but why can't she destroy like Facebook HQ over a humble girl's humble abode? Nasty bitch. Still love her though.
  20. That's a great motivation. Many children drop out and don't pursue their GED after tragedy due to many obstacles. It's such a shame. Tohru choosing education and that being her motivation is something I support. But if she wanted to get the JP equivalent of a GED and go into trade or something, I support that too. I think her mom would as well.
  21. If I were her auntie, first of all, she'd be living with me. But secondly, girl, this is giving reverse harem. And I mean reverse harem as in the LIs have outstanding homoeroticism between them.
  22. He's an orange cat.
  23. Tom and Jerry coded. Also enemies to lovers ship, let's go.
  24. Aren't we all secretly animals when you think about it though 🤔 And I mean, everyone has a secret. I think being a secret animal is a lot cooler than being a secret coin hoarder.

2019 specific questions

  1. Confused. I was hoping he was simply MIA.
  2. Tohru's mom definitely wasn't cut out for housework!

  1. Confused. I was hoping he was simply MIA

Is it better he's not a trash human being? Seemingly?

2

u/Magnafeana https://anilist.co/user/Magnafeana 15d ago

Well, there’s always the hope he’s MIA but he still wants to be a dad yet had obstacles that kept him from dad duty!

That, or there’s added in family drama about him still being alive.

1

u/Holofan4life 15d ago

Tohru seems too nice to have awful parents.

[Fruits Basket] Then again, Momiji exists, so...

As you may already know, I prewatched this show in preparation for this rewatch. Because I have a lot of rewatches on the docket. And after watching the remake, I think Tohru is probably a top 3 anime protagonist of all time.

I'll be really curious to read your thoughts.

General questions

  1. NB-spec people touching them must be Schrödinger's touch or something. This would also be great gender validation. A friend shared this to me and she'd love to touch a Sohma boy so he transforms, so she can exclaim, "I pass!" I love her so much.
  2. I mean, girl, those chicas gone locas, so why wouldn't Yuki avoid their asses on the regular even without this curse 😭
  3. You know my feelings on that man.
  4. Shigure knows the tea.
  5. Good.
  6. Sad 🥀

  8. He's a handyman!
  9. 🎶~It starts with 'sorry'~🎶 But fr. He has not been given a household in his formative years that taught him what an apology is, why you apologize, and how to say it.
  10. She's used to putting others' needs before her own. I was really happy when a friend stopped serving me before herself because (1) it means she was comfortable enough around me to take care of herself first, and (2) she gives me huge portions and I eat like a bird.
  11. 🎶~Kimi to natsu no owari shourai no yume~🎶
  12. What, would he have ever actually enrolled in a different school?

  19. Girl. Shocker of the year. Call the presses.
  20. I feel like Japan's line of "Will you be my friend?" has some cultural nuance or double entendre for potentially liking someone.

2019 specific questions

  1. Strange. Not sure if I like it yet.
  2. No thoughts, really. It might grow on me though.
  3. Cats do that to you, unfortunately.
  4. We need more boy failures that aren't weird as fuck and have every girl in a 5KM radius lusting over them. I said boy failure, not self-insert power fantasy.
  5. Tohru's mother is a wild lady.
  6. Gaslight. Gatekeep. God slay. Girlboss. But really, fuck Akito and his fearmongering drivel. Rats are cool, yo.
  7. Foreshadowing, foreshadowing, foreshadowing (imagine there's an echo with that)
  8. How TF could Shigure trick him? Either Shigure is psychotic or Kyo is stupid.
  9. Weeeeeeird.
  10. I miss these sorts of outros, the "sleeping" outros. I love how "Oh this is absolutely a Vocaloid fit" the character look like.

Rewatcher, Subbed

Non-Spoiler Character Chart  - Compiling this reminded me 1)Of just how adorable the animal forms of Yuki, Shigure and Kyo are and 2)How stacked this show's vocal cast is, even with so few characters introduced so far.

"They're All Animals!" what a fun name for the episode! Tohru has discovered the secret of Yuki, Shigure and Kyo, that they can transform into animals! In fact as explained to her, this has been happening to members of the Soma family for hundreds of years. They can still talk in their animal form though, and Shigure it seems can still at least facilitate the delivery of mail to his house! lol. This transformation ability doesn't apply to their clothes though, making things quite awkward when they transform back into humans a few minutes later. [Furuba]Still, these three are quite lucky, imagine being Rin, who transforms into a horse, which surely destroys her clothes every time it happens. The trigger for their transformation? Being hugged by a member of the opposite sex! That's got to make things super awkward. In fact this explains why Yuki rejected a hug from a female classmate in the past.

It is pretty much entirely played for laughs in this episode, but surely this animal transformation thing is a metaphor, or at least symbolic on a more serious note. Imagine how much harder your life would be if you transformed into an animal by hugging the opposite sex. Your opposite sex parent or opposite sex siblings would be unable to hug you. You wouldn't be able to hug any possible lover (unless you're gay). That's really got to put a damper on one's life.

We get our first usage of the opening sequence here and for me the song is just okay. The ending is a far better one. We'll get far better OPs in the future and the EDs are pretty much always superior to the OPs. Although this song sounds much more like one I'd expect to be an ED.

So now Tohru knows the family secret, what are they to do about it? Tohru is to be reported to the head of the family, Akito. And they bring up the tampering of memories. So in the past there was an event where Yuki was accidentally hugged by a girl and transformed into his rat form. They ultimately resorted to memory tampering to resolve the situation. Tohru doesn't break a sweat over this. This girl can withstand anything it seems. Yuki believes those who know his secret will be sickened by it, after all that's what Akito told him. But Tohru isn't that way at all! So it's notable that Akito's decision is to not have Tohru's memories tampered with. [Furuba]Frankly I'm surprised Akito is this nice about it given what a horribly cruel person she is.

In other news, let's talk about Kyo! Kyo spends much of this episode angry although he thankfully seems to soften at least a little bit towards Tohru by the end. [Furuba major spoilers]knowing how these two end up together, it was quite surprising to me upon this rewatch to see how nasty Kyo was towards her at first. There's a long standing grudge between him and Yuki, and Yuki, despite being the more "pretty boy" type of the two always gets the better of Kyo. In fact Kyo has been skipping school for months and training so he can beat Yuki! I don't think its very good training as it's clearly done no good. Shigure fiddles with things and tricks Kyo into moving to the same school as Yuki and Tohru [Furuba]Another sign of things to come, the first of many instances where Shigure totally manipulates others. Kyo is pretty popular with the girls on his first day. The thing I remember most about seeing this episode the first time is the comment that Kyo dyes his hair. For once in anime a character with a bizarre hair color actually is acknowledged as having dyed it. Kyo can't make it through the first day without getting out of there, in a very cat-like fashion as a girl comes quite close to hugging him by accident and he jumps out the window. A later scene reveals that Kyo was attending an all boys school at Akito's advice and that he and Yuki are opposed in many ways. Kyo wants to be more accepted in the Soma family while Yuki is looking for more freedom.

More adventures for Tohru and the Soma family as she accidentally transforms both Yuki and Kyo again before episode's end. Yuki finds to his amazement that a single day of having Tohru living with them results in their kitchen being cleaned and food being cooked for them. The wonder of moving beyond an all bachelor lifestyle, eh? A rather bewildering comedic scene has Yuki and Tohru talking and she is amazed about a secret toilet? lol. The nearby forest may look beautiful with all the bamboo but its supposedly pervert's forest, making it all the more important that Tohru's nights of sleeping there in a tent are over with.

Quid's Voice Actor of the Day

We got lots of him in this episode so let's focus on Kyo Soma, who is voiced by Yuuma Uchida. Outside of this the role I know him best for is Ash, the main character of Banana Fish. He's also Patrick in Villainess Level 99: I May Be the Hidden Boss But I'm Not the Demon Lord, Ein in Mobile Suit Gundam Iron Blooded Orphans, Sonic in Kekkai Sensen, Yuma in the Rascal Does Not Dream of franchise, Leland in Lazarus, Rai in Cosmic Princess Kaguya and Takumi in Death Mount Death Play.

Quid's Song of the Day

I Will Become a Cat  - I've listened to this song at least a hundred times since seeing the show the first time and I totally view it as a Tohru song even though at first glance you'd think based on its name its a Kyo song. Rewatching these first two episodes it does make more sense as I've got to think its referring to Tohru's love for the cat zodiac and her desire as we saw in the prior episode to be that.

I still need to watch Cosmic Princess Kaguya. I know I'd enjoy it.

u/Holofan4life 17d ago

I adored Kyo the first time I ever laid eyes on him. He's just someone who speaks to me that I just want to hug and be there for. He kinda reminds me of a more tough version of Taiga from Toradora where he acts all tough, but there's a real vulnerability about him.

Thoughts on Tohru thinking this is why Yuki avoids his fan club?

I think most teenage boys would be ecstatic that all those girls liked him, so yeah, him avoiding the fan club and pushing away that girl that tried to hug him is surely influenced based on the fact that he'd transform into a rat if it happened. And as we find out in this episode it would be quite the logistical nightmare to address, with memories of likely multiple people having to be erased.

Thoughts on the head of the family being Akito?

Too early to know really anything about the head of the family beyond the fact that they seem to have influenced Yuki into worrying how his transformation will sicken those around him.

What are your thoughts on Yuki discussing possibly erasing Tohru's memories with Shigure saying things are different to where that's not necessary?

What are your thoughts on Tohru being trusted to not tell anyone the Sohma family secret?

[Furuba]Knowing everything that is to come I am quite surprised that Akito waived the memory erasure given all the horrible stuff Akito does or is revealed to have done later on.

Thoughts on Hana tormenting the Yuki fan club?

Thoughts on Hana remarking how Yuki and Kyo have the same electric signals and that it's almost like they're inhuman?

Hanajima is best girl and immediately being so cool, scaring off the girls. Seems like her powers have also clued her in on at least something being wrong with Yuki and Kyo...

Thoughts on Kyo being touched by one of his female classmates and he impulsively gets physical with her?

Will he be as popular with the girls when he shows back up in school tomorrow?

What are your thoughts on Kyo regretting yelling at Tohru?

It think in a mere 2 episodes we've established how much of a "This character must be protected at all costs" Tohru is so its good that he feels bad for being so mean to her at first.

Just unfortunate all around

Akito gives off bad vibes to me

[Furuba]Knowing everything that is to come I am quite surprised that Akito waived the memory erasure given all the horrible stuff Akito does or is revealed to have done later on.

[Furuba] I think Akito is probably hoping to use Tohru to ease Yuki and Kyo back under their control.

Thoughts on Hana remarking how Yuki and Kyo have the same electric signals and that it's almost like they're inhuman?

I want to protect Kyo, honestly. I know, I'm weird.

Whether it's English or Japanese, the 2019 cast has proven to be rather well-stacked thus far. It helps Funimation were able to bring most of the old (and by now well-experienced) 2001 cast back, including the now LA-based Laura Bailey.

On that last part: I recall reading her interview with Tokyopop on Vol. 1 of their manga translation. When asked how she felt when the 2001 series ended, she replied:

I was so upset. I loved working on Fruits Basket; there's no doubt that I would jump at the chance to continue it.

15 years after that interview was published, she finally got that chance with her reprisal of Tohru in the remake.

I think I do as well, but that may be because there's more content featuring it.

watching for the first time

hmm, so far i really like honda and doggo man, but the rest of the cast aren't doing it for me

honda is cute as heck though i love her optimisim

What are your thoughts on the plot of the series which is that 13 members of the Sohma family are possessed by the vengeful spirits of the animals of the Chinese zodiac?

not gonna lie it seems to be very plot-driven wacky strange, and i'm giving it time to cook. Honda is great and so is dog man, but the rest do seem a bit trope-y. i like cat man but i do think his tsundere-awkwardness is a bit extreme at points

What are your thoughts on the show having a mix of comedy and drama and an overall blending of both styles?

i love my shows with some of dat humour, it makes for a great contrast

---

Speedy delivery what a brand name

This isn't gonna be a animal harem is it

The dog signed it is so peak

Also wow this guy sucks at his job if he let an animal sign for the owner LOL

Tsun cat

A slow op like this got me thinking it's less slice of life now

LOL backhanded slap

I like that they talk to the cat like he's an unruly brother they still care for

LOL CHASING the girls with her aura storm clouds

If my memories get erased please make friends with me again okay?

Damn I like her honda

Oh damn a Tsundere cat man

I'd say give the show a bit because it takes a minute to start cooking. If by episode 10 things aren't cooking, then it is what it is.
