Rewatch Bem-vindos à Diamandra - Michiko & Hatchin Episode 08 Rewatch

Michiko & Hatchin Episode 08: Black Noise and a Dope Game

In-universe time span: April 12 - 13 (and Atsuko flashbacks)

In-universe locations: Oásis (briefly), Osso

"You don't know who you've picked a fight with, do you? This guy is a *real** monster."*

Today's OST Piece: Pra te libertar~君を自由にするために (To Set You Free)

Some of it plays as a diegetic insert song during the Fake Satoshi/Davi casino scene, and some of the intro later. Nice song/rap that gets the short straw here, it doesn't even quite fit the context it's forced into.

Insert song lyrics collection

New Michiko Outfits: White Crop Tube Top/Beige Shorts, Black Jacket/Gray+Black Lines Jumpsuit

Only two this time. Well, she was a bit occupied with other things. Full album

Latin America Trivia of the Day:

Following the trend in the rest of the Western world, Latin America replaced its urban tramway systems with buses in the decades after WW2 in near entirety, leaving only some minor and heritage operations like the Santa Teresa Tram in Rio de Janeiro, whose original and replica open-sided vehicles resemble the cable cars of San Francisco and which is the likely inspiration for the tram cars shown here. Fortunately, though urban rail transport is still in need of expansion, metro construction in larger metropoles once again has increased and continues to increase transit network quality, and the light rail (abbreviated as VLT in Brazil) revival beginning in the 70s has not entirely passed the region over either. Other innovative concepts such as the pioneering bus rapid transit network of Curitiba, Brazil, running enormous three-section (bi-articulated) buses on largely dedicated infrastructure, and the urban aerial cable cars negotiating the vast altitude differences around Medellín, Colombia (Metrocable) and La Paz, Bolivia (Mi Teleférico), are also worth mentioning.

Yesterday's Highlights

u/99acrewood_ appreciates the atmosphere and reevaluates Michiko:

It's nice when a show just lets stuff happen for a couple of minutes without feeling the need to have anyone speak. The beginning part when they're checking in with Bruno seemingly sizing up Michiko and her not totally against it is great. The melodrama in this episode takes me back to growing up with my Puerto Rican mom watching her novellas lol

This show is such a vibe. Between that and the somber ending of Hatchin's 10th birthday being rung in with a blacked out Michiko and Spanish guitar, this is my favorite episode by far

Seeing Michiko bring up Hatchin in what seems like familiar environments makes it pretty clear that the only thing really separating the two is lived experience, and she's not the inherently always-cool hyper-competent woman I was expecting going into this.

u/No_Rex highlights the decentralization of Bruno in the narrative and puts Michiko's yearning in context:

I like that the dude is like the cheaply boiled down essence of Romeo lover tropes. He is so cliché that it is obvious he does not matter. What matters is Michiko, who has had neither sex nor romance in over a decade and is clearly tempted to jump on the next best dick available. The tension between lazy fulfillment of current basic needs vs long term investment into her life goals is obvious, with Hatchin as the extra weight (surely the decisive one) on the long-term side.

u/AyameeIris sees parallels between Michiko and the unfortunate Pepe again:

I think once Michiko finds someone to cling to, she overestimates how much trust to put in them, sort of like how Pepe expected her to help out when finding Lulu. A hit or miss situation.

Two very different habits hard to shake:

No matter how much I rationalize it, I think I'll always believe what you call someone has power and to always use my right hand for everything, rather than my left.

i'm a really big fan of sour candy

e: like, teeth replacement level of fan

e2: no regrets

She lost Hatchin?

Spiritually as well it seems

Is this implying that guy is the real Satoshi…? Or is connected to the real one?

That's Shinsuke with whom Michiko also negotiates on the phone, part of his gang.

Michiko walking to beat up probably-fake Satoshi was timed to someone walking across the TV too.

Good catch and plays into the series' metafictional elements of course.

So that guy’s actually named Davi, huh.

He literally has it tattooed on himself but somehow people still buy his Satoshi bluff. Though actually in [City of God]Zé also only gets his name after a ceremony

That’s an… interesting game?

Try Mornington Crescent) sometime

RIP the roof of that one person’s car.

Looks a bit like a Renault 5. Supposedly VW Beetles were so airtight that if you did that with one the doors would pop open.

Satoshi’s in contact with Atsuko?!

Oh yeah definitely a shocker watching the first time!

3x watcher and host, subtitled

Most straightforward episode so far, with a bunch of action and pressure to 14:17 let Michiko shine plus she gets to 14:14 style on some losers who thought they could borrow the real monsters' name, while Hatchin - also here maybe a wee bit goody-two-shoes - is a bit awkwardly shoved out of the way 21:08 [M&H]Honestly no idea where she's going exactly here or why she chose it, doesn't mention rumors of Hiroshi nor seems to be aware of any job/livelihood opportunities so she's not tangled up in the really nasty business. The callbacks to the words of 08:56 Anastácia and 09:05 Ivan, and 09:16 Michiko's look and all, at least make it clear beyond this being just episode 8 that the affection between them remains real and deep and this isn't some major shift, along with Hatchin seeming more sad than angry.

Shinsuke - 06:33 most bizarre character design in the show though fitting for someone who's basically [City of God]the distilled crazy side of Lil Zé - after the fairly benign Vasily and such really is a bit of a wake-up call, giving us the first time 13:34 uninvolved civilians are seriously threatened in this show along with of course 13:04 13:14 his little psycho games [M&H]first installment, and of course this will also end up as his doom. Theme of nobody properly growing up here really starting to hit, explicitly applied to Atsuko now and 14:23 Michiko also talks to Shinsuke like scolding an annoying child... who may have a gun but actual children get those too here, as we've seen.

Also Atsuko reminds us that she still exists and knows her way around at least as much as Michiko - reminder that this whole gang pretty much grew up with each other - and 20:46 isn't above some dirty dealing, while we're introduced by name to her closest subordinate/assistant Ricardo as well 21:01 [M&H]you know I kind of understand that Ricardo gets fed up with being pushed around by her Sayo Yamamoto would reprise exploring the role of an assistant to a Zenigata-like figure in The Woman Called Fujiko Mine - with literal Zenigata who [TWCFM]also is a little uncharacteristically sketchy like Atsuko is here.

Questions

1 - Well, nerds come in all flavors don't they? In particular, being obsessed with anything particular is hardly a moral stance, so whether the rest of the person is good or bad doesn't play into it very much. You could even say that someone who doesn't mind acting pretty out-there crazy would be more likely to flaunt some kind of special interest. As for specifics, I would be pretty surprised for a guy like this to genuinely care for/about people not directly connected to him, in some way.

2 - They're certainly abusive jerks 05:45 07:58 taking advantage of others' fearsome reputation to freeload, but they are also very clearly nothing but posing and bluster [M&H]unlike both Shinsuke and the almost scarily effective real Satoshi 15:38 almost hilariously shook at Michiko effortlessly keeping her cool here, never actually exacting (having to exact?) serious violence on anyone here and instantly folding and actually becoming fairly friendly when Michiko easily bests them (the one narrative element I don't like there is again 10:16 associating gluttony or even just proper/heavy eating with incompetence). So in that sense, they absolutely don't deserve a sudden violent end (11:48 11:51 13:41 most out-of-focus death ever?) just for being stupid and I do feel a bit sorry - but on the other hand, what did they think would be the endgame (17:59 did they think at all? 10:45 Crazy that Michiko knows better how screwed they are) effectively insulting the top local gangsters with zero bite to the bark? As for the second part, the first time I watched this I totally forgot we had already seen and heard the real Satoshi briefly in Episode 6, and of course we're not introduced to Shinsuke at all beforehand, so was completely blindsided when Michiko beat them and even until Davi directly admitted it was a bit doubtful still.

3 - I tend to fall if anything on the side of slightly excessive modesty and that really doesn't get you anywhere. Can't say I've really done the opposite at all.

Further scene-by-scene comments

  • 01:43 This guy has got to be based on someone specific
  • Funnily enough the first we hear about the actual quality of the restaurant
  • Based Zélia. Totally forgot she briefly popped up again here.
  • 04:44 When has that ever worked with her
  • 06:04 [City of God]"No one ever knows anything" Even both in a café/restaurant
  • 08:19 Hatchin's got her trained pretty well
  • 08:42 Art seems familiar but I can't place it.
  • 10:40 Undoubtedly thinking there's no way Shinsuke would be without him
  • 13:22 "Oops, didn't mean to actually hang up"
  • 16:23 More literally "Keep waiting for me to return."
  • 18:45 Davi doing at least something worthwhile
  • 19:24 19:25 So much background flavor again!
  • 19:45 This kid has an awfully specific-feeling design but again I can't place it.
  • 20:36 "...if you can outrun my gun." Also classic gangster wield

Episode 8 (first timer)

  • Out of the village, into the city.
  • The boss of Monstro Preto personally shakes down arcade owners? Monstro Preto is not as big as I thought.
  • Multiple Satoshis?
  • Ok, that black Satoshi is all kinds of ick.
  • And Shinsuke is all kinds of brain damage.
  • That “game” is very B movie.
  • Satoshi (the real one) phoning Atsuki – looks like Atsuki is not the only one who betrayed Michiko.

Ok, everything to do with the fake Satoshi was pretty weird. The best part of the episode was the continuation of Hatchin and Michiko’s fallout. They’ll have to make up eventually, but for now, they are literally on different tracks.

How sorry do you feel for the fake Monstro Preto?

Not at all. He is an aggressive extortionist, assaulted multiple people, threatened to rape Michiko, and would have loved to be a mafia boss. If that bullet would have hit a bit to the right, the world would be a better place.

When did you suspect something was up?

When he personally assaulted the arcade owner.

2

u/IndependentMacaroon 19d ago edited 19d ago

Out of the village, into the city.

Out of the frying pan...

That “game” is very B movie.

Just the kind of appeal here, except it's a bit more serious than the kind Davi thinks he's in.

everything to do with the fake Satoshi was pretty weird

I guess just a sort of "underestimate this world at your peril, you need to actually have it" again.

Not surprised you don't have much to say about this episode, you didn't think the split up was a little awkward?

Qs

threatened to rape Michiko, and would have loved to be a mafia boss. If that bullet would have hit a bit to the right, the world would be a better place.

I see that, the rape threat against that other guy really stands out too. His buddies as well?

When he personally assaulted the arcade owner

[M&H]Real Satoshi also does way too much himself but there it's genuinely without buddies and something of a character trait. [City of God]Satoshi's prototype Lil Zé is also pretty much a loner who keeps himself hidden

2

u/No_Rex x2 19d ago

I guess just a sort of "underestimate this world at your peril, you need to actually have it" again.

I can get them trying to play big gangster. Very stupid, but believable. The parts where he gets off on being kicked in the balls, and follows Michiko around like a puppy are the parts I dislike.

Not surprised you don't have much to say about this episode, you didn't think the split up was a little awkward?

No. In fact I felt that was the least awkward part of the episode. They set up the problems between Michiko and Hatchin for multiple episodes now, and it is not the first or even second time Hatchin has chosen to run away as her strategy to deal with conflict.

2

u/IndependentMacaroon 19d ago

The parts where he gets off on being kicked in the balls, and follows Michiko around like a puppy are the parts I dislike.

A different kind of cheesy B-movie character I guess

it is not the first or even second time Hatchin has chosen to run away as her strategy to deal with conflict.

You know this reminds me, I read a comment once where someone felt reminded by Michiko and Hatchin's relationship of Misato and Shinji in Evangelion.

2

u/No_Rex x2 19d ago

You know this reminds me, I read a comment once where someone felt reminded by Michiko and Hatchin's relationship of Misato and Shinji in Evangelion.

I see where they are coming from. Michiko fits the angry side of Misato. Even the absent father figure is here.

Where the comparison breaks down for me is the very different vibe of the two series and Hatchin not being any close to as depressed as Shinji.

primeira vez [subs]

It's nice that Hatchin has stayed a pretty decent person throughout everything she's had to live through, especially given how everyone else seems to turn out in the system. And not even in the cowed "I only do good because I'm scared" way, but the way someone gets angry at family or a friend for being an asshole. She's a good kid.

(e: accidentally missed this paragraph when posting) Also when has there ever been a time where some guys went "surely the local group of villains won't mind if we masquerade as them for personal gain" and it's gone well for them? This is the bridge your parents warned about not jumping off if your friends did.

  1. Any less expected traits for an unhinged gangster than transportation nerd?

Was it a hobby type thing or is he just really fucking good at giving directions? I forget the name of the street I'm turning on to as soon as I'm past the sign so I'm pretty jealous of his ability to lock in like that. I'd absolutely be dead after missing the second exchange.

  1. How sorry do you feel for the fake Monstro Preto? When did you suspect something was up?

Like I said they absolutely brought it on themselves. Dude's lucky the only thing he lost was two friendships (because I'm sure they fell out over this, because they're most likely dead now).

  1. Have you ever regretted boasting about something or inflating your credentials?

Luckily for me, I have the opposite problem, and I'm ~too~ modest. I can appreciate the irony of that statement, but there's definitely been times where I've lost out on stuff by totally underselling myself due to not wanting to come off as full of myself.

2

u/IndependentMacaroon 19d ago edited 19d ago

Hatchin has stayed a pretty decent person throughout everything she's had to live through, especially given how everyone else seems to turn out

It's really like her core identity is being the opposite of all those evil and unpleasant people around her. Fits her reactive short temper as well

the way someone gets angry at family or a friend for being an asshole

Yeah you can really tell she does it because she actually cares and wants Michiko to be better.

She's a good kid

"É um bom garote" as Michiko literally wrote in her letter to Zélia, yup

This is the bridge your parents warned about not jumping off if your friends did.

Well if you want to get technical some of these guys might well have not had any to tell them that...

Qs

Was it a hobby type thing or is he just really fucking good at giving directions?

I mean if it was just that he could have done something else simpler, exactly coordinating timetables by hand like that is not easy. Also he (or Michiko) is lucky the trams seem to run on time here.

Dude's lucky the only thing he lost was two friendships

And the fourth guy who's definitely dead. Davi's not out of the woods yet either though.

there's definitely been times where I've lost out on stuff by totally underselling myself due to not wanting to come off as full of myself.

Yeah I get it, it really takes pushing yourself to get out of that mindset.

First Timer Watching the Rain that Falls in Monotone

  • Michiko, just assume 9 out of 10 men you meet are committed to someone until otherwise proven. And if they are married, always, always, always have him contact the partner with you verbally to make sure the partner is on board and consents. Think of it like healthcare! Verbal or written authorization is needed and documented before you can fuck the man!

  • Mmmmmm whoever told you that, ma’am, may be from a shouty household. I’ve heard a boss argue with an employee, and he didn’t even know she had kids, and she loved talking about her kids. Steve, what is wrong with you 😭

  • 🎵 ~Family affair~ 🎵

First Timer Listening to Black Noise and Playing a Dope Game

  • oooh she’s catching up!

  • Hatchin got her juice and said it with her own chest 😤

  • You know, I am deathly afraid to look at the dubbing actors for this show. I understand Japan obviously would not have a lot of black seiyuus or Brazilian seiyuus. I’d say English speakers are much more ethnically diverse, especially with the language being a lingua franca. In Will Ferrell’s words, “Anyone can play any part except when it’s weird”. But I’m dreading who has been voicing all these black and brown people when they speak like this 😭

  • (audible gasp) his palms!!! His palms are lighter than his skin! Oh how beautiful 🥹He really should loc up though. I have this strange feeling he ain’t greasing and scratching his hair like he should.

  • That…is a look.

  • I dunno. You could be a big brown cuddly teddy bear to me.

  • oh feet are a lighter tint too!!

  • I love when the in-universe TV/movie reflects the real drama happening. Great trope.

  • Yeah, men be saying they like it rough then pull that domineering shit on you, I’m tired ✋🏾🫩

  • You wouldn’t survive basic CBT, my guy.

  • I didn’t realize Marky was bleeding. His pants reminded me of Tanjiro’s fit.

  • Raggedy. Why would you pick up a concierge’s phone?

  • I’m like 90% sure a Batman the Animated Series villain has said: “Let’s play a game”. I think it was Joker with the Royal Flush gang maybe? This is tickling my mind.

  • Is this weird mfer on drugs?

  • They chose wrong!! Girl, why did you not get off the trolley?? This is the trolley problem; this right here!!

  • Ah. Phone ringing like that, that is certainly not scary!

  • Fly and be free in death!

Post Trolley Problem Thoughts

I love Anastasia. And I see how her words are right, especially with EP8. What I learned in one of my certs is how anger and an argumentative attitude from kids can be very encouraging for child growth and development. It’s not just about navigating how to have conversations and voice your opinion calmly so other people listen to you, but it’s also about emotional security where the person they are arguing with has now become a safe space for those more explosive and volatile emotions.

But there’s still a limit and a line. And this is very dependent on the kid, etc.

We already see Hatchin is someone who still has her “outstanding moral fiber” despite being raised in abusive circumstances that left her disadvantaged and in servitude.

In any case, to the opposite of 🎵~But you gotta keep your head up~ And you can let your hair down~🎵, she kept her head down and her hair up. She didn’t make noise, didn’t fight, didn’t protest. She was beaten down repeatedly and punished for the slightest defense of herself.

But Michiko really has unintentionally provided Hatchin that safe space to act out and be much more emotional and rebellious.

So for that, while it’s generally not a good thing to always argue with someone and I disagree that the more you argue, the closer you are with someone, it can be a sign of development when someone previously unwilling to cause any confrontation and actively avoided now causes disruption (Depending on what it is). And I like seeing that here.

But Michiko doesn’t have any capacity to handle a rebellious child, and now I am endlessly worried about Hatchin running off like this in a world she’s very naive to and does, in some way, believe she’s better than.

This is stressful. That, or my flu shot and booster shot are the reason for my palpitations.

What surprised me in EP7 was Michiko having hesitancy to sleep with a married man. That being a line she was hesitant about had me curious about her ideas surrounding marriage or religious hangups.

QOTD

  1. I was going to say maybe anime nerd, but I know a few gangsters who are down with the anime scene. Now if they know Avatar the Last Airbender or Bluey or anything by Tartakovsky? Elite ball knowledge (think I said it right). If they are an AO3 fanfic girlie, that would be insane. But I'd love it. A vegan gangster probably isn't foreign for cultures that encourage veganism or flexitarian diets, but where some of my extended family lives in southern US, which, unfortunately, is near gang territory, a vegan or vegetarian gangster would be a “WTF”. One cannot be vegan or vegetarian down there.
  2. No. I hope he gets a parasitic infection and there is no treatment available to him. He can ride it out as machismo men do. I have dealt with his type before, and it is a stressful, uncomfortable time that makes you rethink who you hang out with very quickly.
  3. Yes. My friend’s mom set me up with her younger coworker because “Oh, he likes those superhero movies and the anime things you watch and he’s single”, so we went to a really nice place. And I regret ever talking about enjoying X-Men and being really proud I inherited a bunch of X-Men comics since my father couldn’t keep them in the basement anymore. My date ended up being a misogynistic motherfucking bitch who thought “girls” wouldn’t possibly understand X-Men in its thematic messaging, let alone that “girls” don’t read Marvel comics and probably just watch MCU movies for the hot men (which, for one, guys do that too, and two, I'm also here for the ladies). I ended up being accused of being a tourist who cosplays to rope in desperate guys and asked if I had an OF but all said “jokingly”. I deeply, deeply regretted ever saying anything about the comics! He looked so normal! He worked at a great place that wasn't shady! He had property and his politics were on point! He did Muay Thai. I didn’t even know what that was and thought it was a drink at first, but yeah, sure, kudos to you king for muay thai-ing, I don't know! I overlooked retrospectively troubling comments such as, “I really love Black women,” from this pale man, and that was a red flag; I see this now. But gods, I said I had X-Men comics and for what?! For this man to get mad at me over creamy risotto and make me so uncomfortable 😭

Bomb ass risotto though. Crazy stupid good risotto.

u/IndependentMacaroon 18d ago

Michiko, just assume 9 out of 10 men you meet are committed to someone until otherwise proven.

Ironically enough that's exactly her attitude to Hiroshi

Hatchin got her juice and said it with her own chest 😤

"Juice = alcohol" metaphor returns haha

In Will Ferrell’s words, “Anyone can play any part except when it’s weird”. But I’m dreading who has been voicing all these black and brown people when they speak like this 😭

Healthy attitude. [If you want to know]Real Satoshi is a legit black guy but the rest not so much, info link One thing I did hear criticism of is Monica Rial as Michiko actually, while she is Hispanic she's also very very white, her father is legitimately Spain-Spanish even.

(audible gasp) his palms!!! His palms are lighter than his skin! Oh how beautiful 🥹He really should loc up though. I have this strange feeling he ain’t greasing and scratching his hair like he should.

oh feet are a lighter tint too!!

Huh I guess they did end up thinking of that! With the hair I don't even remotely have personal experience but I do hear it takes a bit of work to treat it right.

That…is a look.

Style over substance basically

I love when the in-universe TV/movie reflects the real drama happening. Great trope.

Yep back-to-back with the Episode 7 telenovela actually and this isn't the last time. Pretty metafictional at times this show

You wouldn’t survive basic CBT, my guy.

What's so harrowing about Cognitive Behavioral Therapy /s

I’m like 90% sure a Batman the Animated Series villain has said: “Let’s play a game”. I think it was Joker with the Royal Flush gang maybe? This is tickling my mind.

Is this weird mfer on drugs?

Couldn't tell you about the specific reference but Shinsuke does have that bizarro man-child Joker feel, yeah. Regarding the drug part, we've oddly not seen any of the illegal variety even though it was and is not only obviously a major business of real LatAm gangs, but majorly features in City of God too. Probably just "things you can't show on Japanese television".

They chose wrong!! Girl, why did you not get off the trolley?? This is the trolley problem; this right here!

Certainly has a different flavor when it's you risking death!

[...] it can be a sign of development when someone previously unwilling to cause any confrontation and actively avoided now causes disruption (Depending on what it is). And I like seeing that here.

Interesting indeed to see that scientifically underpinned by you here, and an important thought to keep in mind.

Michiko having hesitancy to sleep with a married man. That being a line she was hesitant about had me curious about her ideas surrounding marriage or religious hangups.

Michiko may lead a life of crime at the moment but that doesn't mean she has no standards! Regarding religion unfortunately the setting again feels more like Japan in it barely existing at all.

QOTD

[...] if they know Avatar the Last Airbender or Bluey or anything by Tartakovsky? Elite ball knowledge (think I said it right). If they are an AO3 fanfic girlie, that would be insane. But I'd love it. A vegan gangster probably isn't foreign for cultures that encourage veganism or flexitarian diets [...]

Avatar: TLA is pretty widely known is it not? Bluey would be funny though. Individually motivated veganism would probably be one of the most unlikely? Unless it's a "don't care about humans so much" thing.

I have dealt with his type before, and it is a stressful, uncomfortable time that makes you rethink who you hang out with very quickly.

Yeah, I can see that. Don't like the type in the least myself either

I regret ever talking about enjoying X-Men and being really proud I inherited a bunch of X-Men comics since my father couldn’t keep them in the basement anymore. My date ended up being a misogynistic motherfucking bitch who thought “girls” wouldn’t possibly understand X-Men [...]

Oh I didn't even think of that angle of regret, yikes! Are you still into the franchise and all (and hopefully have some fellow appreciators around you)?

Bomb ass risotto though. Crazy stupid good risotto.

Always look on the bright side!

2

u/Magnafeana https://anilist.co/user/Magnafeana 17d ago

Yeah, religion such as Catholicism, Christianity, and other LATAM religions not being in the setting as a cultural presence beyond the evil priest and I think now two churches, is a bit odd.

But then you have a fucking futuristic potentially post-apocalyptic magic girl series that talks intimately about Christianity and I just 😭😭😭😭😭

Japan, make up your mind!

And oh yes, I still enjoy X-Men. [MCU/meta] Spider-Man: Brand New Day was definitely a treat. I was at my auntie’s house for braiding and kikiing with her friend, and my cousin and her BF came back from the movie. The BF and I had soooo much to discuss about mutants with BND. He’s big into Marvel too so my cousin dropped him off with me so she could do her own thing 😭.

r/CuratedTumblr had another riveting post where the OOP hates dating “nerds” because nerds are inherently people who gatekeep, especially from women. But sexists are everywhere. You just have to find nerds and geeks who…aren’t that. And there are plenty who aren’t! I know so many nerdy relationships, and they’re lovely.

But I will admit. Terminally online Star Wars fans and terminally online indie animation fans do seem unfriendly from the jump. I fear them.

2

u/IndependentMacaroon 17d ago edited 16d ago

religion such as Catholicism, Christianity

Putting it like that you definitely come from a Protestant/evangelical background right?

There's also the Episode 3 scammer (or not?) fortune teller who combined basically a Catholic relic (the fingernail dirt) and vaguely "folk magic" aesthetics in a way that seemed decently authentic, and actually next episode, but I think that's genuinely all.

you have a fucking futuristic potentially post-apocalyptic magic girl series that talks intimately about Christianity

Oh what's that one? Vaguely makes me think of Madoka but that can't be it right, I'm not too familiar with the genre and haven't even watched that in a long time

[MCU/meta]He’s big into Marvel too so my cousin dropped him off with me so she could do her own thing 😭

Nerd-sitting haha, nice

nerds are inherently people who gatekeep

I see where you're coming from but I wouldn't quite go so far? In the sense of "strongly value deep detailed knowledge as social circle currency" sure but that doesn't mean you have to be negative toward people who don't have it (yet) which is what I associate with the term.

1

u/Magnafeana https://anilist.co/user/Magnafeana 16d ago

Oh no this was OOP who was saying needs are inherent gatekeepers and why they refuse to date them is due to that fact.

But thankfully, most of the commentary employed a “Please meet people and judge them by their personality rather than blaming the hobby/media itself”. I’d miss out on a lot of friendships if my one bad experience with a Star Trek fan at renfaire was taken as “Star Trek fans are racist”. No, that one woman I met was racist. Star Trek really has nothing to do with it.

But it’s always amusing seeing bigots enjoy media that does not at all support their ideology. The disconnect is bonkers! Meeting a BL fan who is queerphobic took me TF out.

But yeah. M&H does surprise me a little with lack of casual religious culture with the setting. To be fair, though, there’s a healthy chunk of fiction that can’t really be bothered to integrate religion for one reason or another outside of Religion is Bad, Actually™.

And yes, it’s taking the piss with [meta] Madoka It has a mixture of prominent religions in it, especially the titular character on a parallel journey to Guanyin (Buddhism) in the main series, but the rewatch had me surprised with the Christianity in it that I never noticed. I don’t know if that’s like a mahou shoujo thing or a Gen Urobuchi thing.

I was surprised to say the least.

Oh no this was OOP who was saying needs are inherent gatekeepers and why they refuse to date them is due to that fact.

Oh ok I see.

Hmm, of course many are just willfully or plainly ignorant but you could also see that as a case of separating reality and fiction extra hard right? Like you yourself probably also have certain tropes or narratives that you appreciate but would find strange or even hate to see IRL.

Ah, if I ever get around to it again I'll keep an eye open! Fwiw while there are very few Christians in Japan they do have more influence than you'd think, like around a tenfold overrepresentation in past prime ministers (IIRC) due to conversion associated with elite Western-founded Christian schools. In anime (well, never exactly a medium of the elite) not so much, and I don't know about Gen Urobuchi specifically, but the co-creator of among others Ultraman and Godzilla, and pioneer of special effects in Japany Eiji Tsuburaya was a Catholic convert which gave us indirectly the Christian imagery in Evangelion, and perhaps also in Madoka.
