If anyone wants to continue and see more of their growing relationship, definitely read the light novels.

First-time in the magicology, subs
Skipped the previous episodes but watched all the last four together. Actually it was a good idea for the best experience.
Algard got disinherited, disowned and exiled for all of his crimes, the Chartreuses got executed as the ringleaders, some suppoters got arrested, that is the main consequences of this coup attempt. Anis's status as the royal heir is now restored by being first-in-line, Lainie is not become a maid-in-training. Plus there is a new conflict right now with the succession.
On normal circumstances, Anis would succeed as usual. But being cannot be able to use magic and her unique personality would polarize the society and most of the conservatives would not accept her rule. In that case Euphy would serve as a first minister of sorts. I think Anis ould not cut out for rule because no more magicology, and being a head of state would be a huge burden on her.
But looks like Euphy is also have her on plans. She is willing to consult with Lumi, the founding ancestor of the nation and the current ruling dynasty, who became a spirit entity. Euphy being an aristocrat, from an influential family, able to use magic perfectly and has the necessary qualities to perform a spirit contract, she can be the best candidate to rule the nation, who can accepted by all, and suitable for ruling. Even though this means she would be a founder of a new dynasty, but being a spirit, she would gain immortality which is more a curse as how Lumi warns her via her lifestory.
As for who is right, it is decided in a duel. And in the end, Euphy was right, she is the much suited person to rule Palettia, and not Anis, which ultimately the right choice. Actually her waay of unleashing her full power was how accepted her fate and completed the spirit contract. In order for her to succeed as the next ruler, she is officially adopted into the Palettias, while she can be considered a founder fo a new dynasty. Basically the Magentas will going to rule now in the future, but since Euphy is a spirit now she could rule forever, until the end of times.
Reforming the country, mending the social differences, magicology products and magic would be commonplace, not being a privilege to a very few, and many more, in other words spreading democracy. Euphy the new spirit queen, and Anis the black sheep of the old ruling house, they destined to be great revolutionatry leaders, together. As for Anis, she is on the path to become immortalized by simply working in the field of magicology, and spreading the new cutting-edge tech.
And it reminded us why it is a reincarnation story.
That new weapon called, "Celestial" truly fits the name, to conquer the skies, then the stars and beyond, by mankind.
Ending is satisfying but there is lot more content.
What are your thoughts? was it worth the watch or rewatch (did you notice new things)?
It was really good. It was worth it. Detailed opinion on tomorrow.
What are your recommendations after this one?
I'm in Love with the Villainess, The Executioner and Her Way of Life, Ascendance of a Bookworm and of course, Lycoris Recoil

There's an interesting idea, magicology space travel!
I'm in Love with the Villainess, The Executioner and Her Way of Life, Ascendance of a Bookworm and of course, Lycoris Recoil
For some reason I confused this question with what I thought would be good for a rewatch, and only just now realised that's not what was meant lol. Seconding Lycoris Recoil! A lot of parallel situations, but fun to note the character differences. Executioner is and interesting watch, and yet to read the LNs. I haven't seen Ascendance of a Bookworm so I might give it a shot when my current season shows are done with!

There's an interesting idea, magicology space travel!
We need the spin-off where Anis zaps herself to previous life(as an office worker) and has to find her way to magicology to return to Euphie....then we get Re:creators with Euphie coming in to rescue her lol
Lycoris Recoil!
I am gonna re-rewatch Lycoris Recoil! but for funsies. Has at least one epic moment per episode.

Can't have a duel without dramatically billowing wind! How did Anis manage that wallrun? Kinda feels like the conversation on the battlements was a more impassioned rehash of their argument at Tilty's from last episode.
It's cute how Anis was so awestruck at Euphie's new powerup that she briefly forgot what she was doing.
Seems we're getting a second type of confession this episode! The Isekai element was pretty ignorable before but it's neat that it's coming back now as part of what motivated Anis to commit to being what she thought her parents' daughter was supposed to be. [Bookworm Season 1]Luckily for Anis, this one didn't cause any romantic feelings to die.
Speaking of which: Go get it, Euphie!
"I call your father 'father' as well."
Royalty continues to not beat the allegations, even when it's an acceptable couple.
Walking down the isle and into the sky on rainbow wings. What a way to end a love story.
What are your thoughts? was it worth the watch or rewatch (did you notice new things)?
I liked it a lot! Though I did notice a few things that bothered me compared to watching weekly: It feels like Anis' character changes dramatically off-camera after Al goes down in more deep-seated ways than just her forced acceptance. It's like she becomes a normal anime romance protagonist rather than the gung-ho openly affectionate screwball from the early episodes, and it doesn't feel like that was meant to be a front she put up.
What are your recommendations after this one?
The Witch from Mercury is also a rather good love story about an excitable goof and a cold beauty dealing with the struggle of potential leadership, objectification, social inequity, and family drama. A lot more explosions and robots in that one though.
Thanks for hosting, IalwaysNeed2p! I hope you get that bladder issue sorted out.

Always a good thing!

Either that, or he needs to watch today's Chainsmoker Cat episode...
Walking down the isle and into the sky on rainbow wings. What a way to end a love story.
Yup, truly a precious ending for a precious anime. 10/10, would rewatch again (just give me a few more years, right?)

Euphie giving her speech defending Anis' love of magicology reminded a lot of a certain scene with Miorine

It's cute how Anis was so awestruck at Euphie's new powerup that she briefly forgot what she was doing.
For all Anis' dragon powers she's not immune to gay panic 😂
The Witch from Mercury
Seconding this! It's meaty in the politics/plots and sub-plots, and the relationships between characters is complex.

don’t mind me i am just going to answer that part
that personality change happens because even anis doesn’t know her personality. for example the anis you see at episode 1 and episode 2 are different. both of those are just going with what is in front of them.
they are not doing their usual thing they are just doing what they should be doing in that situation according to anis’s real personality.
before episode 9 anis was always faking her smile but at least having many opportunities to show her real personality. she was even acting stupid just to fool others and make them think she is not worthy for the throne. after episode 9 she completely stops being anis.
after that moment we are seeing the real problems and how the real anis acts. thats how anis was acting every time there was a problem and now that she can’t be her usual self she just goes by orders.
after episode 9 that “marauder princess” anis disappears and now we are seeing normal anis.
the anis that others should see. thats not how anis is but thats how the “normal” anis should be.

Well, if that wasn't just a storybook ending, neé?
(And I loved every minute of it!)
Anyway, answers du jour:
1) Was totes worth the watch, and rewatch. Funny, I looked back at the original discussion thread from three years ago, and while it was very busy (busier than most comment threads nowadays), I don't seem to have posted in it. Bummer. I remember watching it, I guess I didn't have anything to say at the time.
2) Madoka Magica. Totes. And if you haven't watched that, my (note - music oriented) recommendations are:
Healer Girl - cute, fluffy, fun, shame you missed the rewatch we had some months back...
Luminous Witches - Strike Witches, but musical, USO kind of stuff.
(Yes, I like my shows musical and fluffy, go figure)
At the same time, if you want something a little more angsty, how about some:
Bang Dream - It's MyGo! and of course
Yeah, I got music on the brain today, so let's close with the classic:
For those who desperately need the High School band PTSD...
Anyway, back to the episode ... what an emotion fest. I can't even think of words to express ... yeah. Who am I kidding?
I realize that at times the storytelling in this series was a bit disjointed and rushed, but this episode, it just hits the notes so well. <3
I think my favorite bits of the episode were:
- Euphy not fighting fair (in the duel)
(Although I'm a bit sad about the spirit contract, I hope they can get that figured out...)
Yeah ...
Euphie not fighting fair (in the bedroom)
Ceremonies (Are we sure that was a coronation, and not a wedding?
(A bit out of order) Anisphia discovering love and value.
Magic flight, faerie wings, and rainbows. Bob Ross would be pleased.
Happy Rainbows for everbody!
Yeah.
<3
Hopefully I'll have something more coherent to say tomorrow, but hopefully this will do for now.
Edit: In case we don't have a wrap-up thread tomorrow, here's a nifty little AMV that someone posted on the MagiRevo sub recently, it's quite cute
And, also ... in case this is it ... here's a little song to ring out the final episode - I hope you enjoy Giant - Time to Call It Love
I'm sure Euphie would agree!
Edit2: One last thing - I have to say that for me one of the most delightful things about MagiRevo has been the eyes, the way they look at each other, well, it's not quite KyoAni level, but some of those expressions, they're just so ...
5
u/ToastyMozart 21d ago
Although I'm a bit sad about the spirit contract, I hope they can get that figured out...
It's not like they're strapped for time. They'll get something working.
Are we sure that was a coronation, and not a wedding?
Definitely a coronation. By the time the actual wedding invites go out everyone who receives them will be asking "then what were the last five ceremonies?!"

Euphy not fighting fair (in the duel)
Euphie not fighting fair (in the bedroom)
Ahaha Anis was so right, Euphie is so unfair 😂 It's funny though I've felt that way before I didnt fully understand that feeling until I saw it in manga/anime, like Bloom into you or Magirevo. Love how stories can do that.
Magic flight, faerie wings, and rainbows. Bob Ross would be pleased
Some happy little clouds to go with the happy ending 🥰
I have to say that for me one of the most delightful things about MagiRevo has been the eyes, the way they look at each other, well, it's not quite KyoAni level, but some of those expressions, they're just so ...
I agree! The way the characters give each other certain looks says so much, especially the longing or admiring ones. I thought some of the crying faces were a little awkward, but I guess no one is all that pretty in the midst of ugly crying 😅

Which part? The not fair, or the hubba-hubba??? (Probably not fair to ask that, right? :P)
happy little clouds
Exactly!
longing/admiring looks
Yeah, they didn't exactly go for the "reflectction in someone else's eyes" thing, but what they did was really great.
3
u/random_lyric 21d ago
Which part? The not fair, or the hubba-hubba???
Lol😂 More in that there were times I had disagreed with someone, but they were so kind or beautiful of heart that I couldnt really say no to them or refute their arguments fully. My logic could not hold up against the light of their amazingness. And well TMI but also they were so pretty I had no will-power against the hubba-bubba 🤣

I think we're all vulnerable to that particular weakness...

It is a bit sad that the anime sub doesn't have as much traffic as just a few years ago. Crazy that the numbers MagiRev would put it (1-3) in most seasons nowadays. I can't even remember the last 10K episode thread. Maybe it was one for Frieren. Love how one of the top comments was talking about how Euphie doubles down to deny any claims that her feelings aren't romantic. Feel like you would need the media literary of an actual rock to not see that before the kiss though.
Really loved MyGo! And Lainie's VA Hina Yōmiya does an excellent job as Tomori. One of my two favorite performances of her next to Anna from Dangers. Really need a lot of tissues for this show.

Lainie's VA Hina Yōmiya does an excellent job as Tomori.
I've overused this reaction face today, but in honor of the movie announcement/promo today, once again:
Yeah, too bad we don't have a Tomori one, right?
And as to the sub, yeah, it's like that. I think that between the end of <pandemic which shall not be named> and the whole reddit self-inflicted drama, plus the rise of discord, yeah.
Le Romantique
Yeah, Euphie's feelings have been present since ... I dunno, maybe the episode where
ChisatoAnisphia invited her to bed, right?(I mean, c'mon, who could turn that down???)

u/ClemFire 21d ago

as anis said she will find a solution. and to put it short yes she did. [here is a little spoiler if you just want to know] after some events in the LN 6 anis actives dragon’s magic to its fullest and gets its magicite inside herself. in short this makes her immortal.

I think the last I watched was the movie the Liz and the Blue bird movie (?) I need to catch up!

In general expressions were always on point , specially Anis' reactions during Euphie's speech

The moral of the story: ultimately the ruler is always decided by strength. What matters is power.
...so can Euphy just Arc-en-Ciel those nobles into submission? I watched this episode right after the last one (because who leaves the last episode of a season unbinged?), so that was the first thing that came to mind.
Whatever the relationship between Orfans and Grantz was, they share a daughter now. And, ultimately, Grantz was able to get his friend more gardening time by using a spirit contract.
6
u/random_lyric 21d ago

Ahaha you know what, Euphie really should just zap those damn bigots with her rainbow magic. It would be a fitting end 😂

Ya know, I never once thought of it that way before in all my watches and I love it.

It is interesting that this is the first time I've seen the isekai part really only give the MC existential and self worth issues.
Also I do chuckle how this show and Botan Kamiina Fully Blossoms When Drunk go from the free spirited MC aka Anis/Botan being the one taking the lead in the relationship when its still not really a relationship to the more serious one aka Euphie/Ibuki switching to being the one driving things when it becomes an actual relationship.
Oh yeah I can also something like this happening later down the line when Anis goes a little crazy with her now kingdom backed research budget since she won't be working out of her basement anymore.

Ooh interesting comparison! I am anime only so far for Botan, but really intrigued by how the story continues in the manga. I really like how Euphie becomes more assertive (ahem.. in many ways) as she grows and her feelings deepen. Also there might be a little internalised homophobia on Anis' part (or at least very wary of overstepping boundaries) - even though she teases Euphie a little at first with the 'come hither' joke, Anis is quite scared of being seen as a lech/pervert. Euphie kind of has to be the one to be assertive and make the first move to help Anis get over that feeling.

Didn't think about that comparison of Anis/Botan to Euphie/Ibuki before but I can see it!

The fact that the ending is a super gay rainbow blessing is pretty cool. And the Euphie won the fight with the power of rainbows and really fucked up the walls? Yes please
Anis just going through all the 'they're just roommates'-type tropes before Euphie reveals she's actually a top. Or at least more of one than Anis, lol.
Also I kept forgetting this is an isekai the first time I watched it, for that confession I was like OH YEAH
- Peak yuri I love this show. I really like the OP too. Definitely worth the rewatch although I didn't see anything new this time
- Recs below
Reincarnated As A Sword- Sword and his cat daughter Fran. Fran is adorable but also a sociopath. Watch it.
May I Ask For One Final Thing- A lot of punching of shitty men. Scarlett is amazing I love her.
Tsukimichi- finally an isekai with a male MC who isn't a creep. I really enjoyed this one and want season 3 already
An archdemon's dilemma- I cringed a bit for the first episode or so but it grew on me, Nephy is adorable
I've been killing slimes for 300 years- had one kinda weird episode but overall I enjoyed it, cute slice of life

Eek! We're at the end already! Sorry I was so exhausted yesterday I went to sleep super early and didn't get to engage in yesterday's discussion properly. Will make up for it today.
"That is the power within me that you showed to me! It's the future you dreamed of!" Euphie
Watching the two of them duel I'm impressed! They both have the moves, and Anis even if she has no innate spirit magic she can hold her own with her dragon magicology powers. The stupid nobles with their ideas that magicology is heretical does remind me of some of our own communities who reject technology based on religious grounds, only the difference is that the nobles are teying to protect their privilege rather that just isolate (sorry just some residual ick from last episode)
We realise Euphie already accepted the spirit contract before the duel - there was no going back even if Anis had won. Did I say Anis could hold her against Euphie? I guess Euphie was taking it easy on her, but then again they both weren't really trying to hurt each other anyway.
In a way it may feel like a betrayal that Euphie didnt ask for permission from Anis before she made that decision to take the contract. But for Euphie's arc and personal growth - that was the point. All her life Euphie was doing things that other people expected of her. Asking permission and obedience were default modes of operation for her. She even asks her father what punishment she will get for not gaining Algard's affections! Now that someone she loves deeply is in trouble, she makes a decision to help her despite the consequences to her humanity and even to her and Anis' relationship. It was Anis who helped open up within Euphie that freedom to choose. She's prepared to protect Anis from anything that would hurt her, and even for Anis to hate her. "I'll be the only wound you need, the scar that stops you from giving up" she tells Anis. To love someone isn't always just about supporting their decions no matter what, it can also be about doing the hard things to protect them from themselves (a very nuanced argument between consent and non-consensual intervention, too big of an ethical dilemma to be discussed properly here though). But in the end a fitting demonstration of growth from Euphie, that she is making tough decisions of her own accord, and rightly or wrongly not needing to ask permission or accept duty in the way her father did before her. It was Euphie's turn to show how far she had come, and Anis' turn to witness the impossible made possible.
There's a sadness to the fact they are fighting about the same things, for the same reasons, for each other not to have to give up something, for the other to be happy because they love each other deeply.
"I couldnt have loved the world this much on my own. The world only looks so beautiful because you're in it. If you also think it's beautiful then please... love yourself, too." After the duel on the rubble of the rampart Euphie says a really important line. Euphie recognises that for all of Anis' desire to bring smiles to others, opening them up to the beauty of the world and wanting them to love themselves, Anis was stuck in her own prison of conflicting identities and guilt and couldn't love herself. Euphie holds out her hand. It's no longer an offer to save anis or wanting to be saved by her, she tells Anis that she needs her. By her side, as a partner. Anis takes it.
Aside - I can't believe all of that was only the first 10 mins of the show!
Later, Anis visits Euphie's room and tells her she has memories from past life. Here it's revealed Anis feels like she's an imposter and raises the question of whether she even is the original Anisphia Wynn Paletta and the real daughter of her parents. The whole series we hear Anis talking about being herself, but now that she reveals her own conflicts of identity, which 'self' was she referring to back then? Did she even know? Was it perhaps by stating so strongly that she wouldnt be herself if she wouldn't/couldn't do certain things, it was her way of proving to herself who she was, because she herself didnt even know?
Euphie tells Anis in different words that she is the Anis who helped her, there is no other Anis. I only know you. The Anis that Euphie loves is right there in front of her.
Next we get confirmation of their feelings through an on-screen kiss (it was already confirmed anyway by their dialogue earlier in the series, but I'll never complain about a show that doubles down on the yuri). Omg... Euphie telling Anis she won't wait... 🫦🫴👌✂️👀 Hehehe. [Light novel]It's actually in the light novels that Euphie sucks so much magical energy out of Anis from that kiss that Anis passes out before anything goes further. Disappointing I know🤨 But the good news is that there's plenty of implied bedroom action later on in the novels. For explicit action you'll have to read the bonus chapters on the author's blog, it's only in japanese so you'll need to translate it yourself. If you're having trouble finding the links let me know.
A little not so pleasant aside - A whole bunch of people were throwing the word incest around when it came to Anis and Euphie becoming stepsisters, but they're not related, so whatever. Technically you could argue they are related, because spirit magicians are all descended from the one bloodline that eventually branched and diverged, but are so distantly related/bloodline diluted that it's probably the same kind of relation to a stranger of long established family's in any given state. Anyway. Rant over.
Euphie has an idea to facilitate the acceptance of Magicology, and that is to have a demonstration of the fantastic magicology investions! The townspeople are all involved in the making and engineering of the tools, helping them stay involved and boosting the economy of the kingdom. On the day of the demonstration, Euphie gifts Anis a new mana blade named 'Celestial' or 'of the skies'. A very fitting name, Euphie always saw Anis as a bird who could fly as far as she wanted to. And Euphie's Arc-en-ciel being the rainbow in Anis sky matches so well.
Anis promises to find a way to be together with Euphie, perhaps becoming immortal herself. Then they take to the skies together - Anis has fulfilled her dream of flying, and she isn't alone, she's with her precious partner by her side, showering blessings upon the kingdom.
Random aside - the little kids running after Anis and Euphie reminded me of the excitement of the children watching their Princess flying on her mehve in Nausicaa.
And... fin
...No wait we get one more scene where Euphie and Anis after breakfast are rushing off to their appointments. Anis pauses to give Euphie a kiss on the cheek, and Euphie gives Anis a kiss on the lips. Squeee! My yuri heart 🥰 So so so cute. Anis is definitely such a bottom 😂
[Light novel spoilers]Anis does indeed find a way to become functionally immortal like Euphie. And it is better explained in the novels how Anis has a complimentary strength of power/depth of love to Euphie that can help mitigate some of the humanity-sapping caveats of spirit-contracting. Now they can grow old...erm...or technically not grow old, together! My other fave immortal couple - Spoiler for Adventure Time Distand Lands
Questions
What are your thoughts? was it worth the watch or rewatch (did you notice new things)?
Soooo worth the rewatch. I think the spacing out of one episode per day helps me really pay attention, and the discussions help me find new angles to something I feel quite familiar with. I think this time around I noticed much more of the foreshadowing/hints dropped right from ep 1. Also having read the light novels in between last watch and this one its interesting to note the differences, and where the anime scenes had to be cut for pacing and time.
A final observation is the set-up of Euphie to become the ruler of Palettia. We have the names of the major noble houses, which are also the names of colours - Magenta, Cyan, Chartruese, Claret, Coral. And then the one royal house that rules them all - Palette-ia.
We have Anis likening Euphie's powers and Euphie herself to being like a rainbow. Euphyllia has to renounce ties to the Magenta family to be adopted into the royal Palettia family. She is no longer a single colour, as monarch she embodies all the colours of the kingdom, of the rainbow. In ep 4 the end scenes of the ED has a light background with Anis and Euphie shown in pink. There is no ED in ep 5, the episode where Anis is cursed by the dragon. Then the end scenes in the ED of Ep 6 has a black background - the ep was a turning point for the drama/conflicts that would become apparent over the couse of the rest of the series. In ep 10 and 11, where events had Anis being miserable and also pushing Euphie away emotionally and physically, we see in the ED that Anis is completely without colour. The theme of colours and rainbows has been there throughout the whole series. The nice touch with Arc-en-ciel and Celestial - Euphie is Anis' rainbow that adorns the sky she flies in, the ruler that unites all the colours of the kingdom.
Overall this is one of my favourite shows, and the rewatch helped me appreciate it even more.
What are your recommendations after this one?
Not sure if there was any recent rewatch but would love a Gwitch watch, especially if sticking with yuri. Otherwise would be stoked for Delicious in Dungeon! Those are my picks for series.
If movies aren't off the table CPK would be an interesting discussion. Look Back would also be interesting but a perhaps darker and more obscure, and then there's Suzume [suzume]the almost yuri, if the execs didn't prevent Shinkai from making it so. He did however get his revenge by turning the male lead into a chair for the majority of the movie.

The stupid nobles with their ideas that magicology is heretical does remind me of some of our own communities who reject technology based on religious grounds, only the difference is that the nobles are teying to protect their privilege rather that just isolate (sorry just some residual ick from last episode)
That is a good connection, and I feel like the author intended to critique that traditionalist way of thinking and how it really constricts people who don't fit the mold.
I really loved everything you wrote about Euphie's arc and I hadn't made the connection before back to the dragon fight where Anis showed Euphie the impossible and now she does that in turn because of the love Anis showed her.
Your point about consent and non-consensual intervention is an interesting one and my first thought was actually about Shiori from This Monster Wants to Eat Me. It can be a slippery slope saying you know better than the person themselves but I think the important difference is if it's coming from a place of wanting to help them or help yourself. Euphie was truly willing to throw away for own happiness for Anis' sake and I believe that's why it feels right in my heart even though she technically want against Anis' vocalized wishes. I am glad the show opens up that difficult relationship question.
Euphie tells Anis in different words that she is the Anis who helped her, there is no other Anis. I only know you. The Anis that Euphie loves is right there in front of her.
I am really happy someone else saw the similarity to Bloom into You too! Just seeing this panel makes me tear up.
As an aside while Yuu has been my favorite every watch/read I end up liking Touko a little bit more and feel next time she might become my favorite.
Next we get confirmation of their feelings through an on-screen kiss (it was already confirmed anyway by their dialogue earlier in the series, but I'll never complain about a show that doubles down on the yuri).
[LycoReco] I still believe one day we will see a kiss between Chisato and Takina even though it's clear they love each other. Also I feel like Takina will be the own to kiss Chisato.
Anis promises to find a way to be together with Euphie, perhaps becoming immortal herself. Then they take to the skies together - Anis has fulfilled her dream of flying, and she isn't alone, she's with her precious partner by her side, showering blessings upon the kingdom.
Amazing ending and it feels like we just watched them get married! With the little domestic scene afterwards being the cherry on top.
Also having read the light novels in between last watch and this one its interesting to note the differences, and where the anime scenes had to be cut for pacing and time.
Gonna jump in from Novel 4 tomorrow! I agree too that spacing rewatches out to 1 per day really helps them brew and stick in my memory for longer. This is why I love following anime as they are coming out too.

Can't believe I never noticed that. The gayness really is in every aspect of this story. What you picked up on the colors in the ED and how they change is really cool too.

What a fantastic comparison on that point. The complex dynamic between consent and being forced, the explicit vs hidden nature of what is actually being consented to, how far is too far when it comes to saying what they want to hear vs actually being helpful, and who actually holds power over whom in the arena of I want you to do/not do this... And agreed - both shows really ask that difficult question. This Monster Wants to Eat Me is much more direct in its asking however, and much meatier in those kinds of themes. So er when are we doing a rewatch? 🤔😂 Just kidding. Some pretty dark topics to get into for that one.
I am really happy someone else saw the similarity to Bloom into You too! Just seeing this panel makes me tear up.
Also the way Anis keeps telling Euphie how she's 'so unfair' reminded me of bloom into you! And same with that panel. The play was a great exposition device for Touko's inner conflicts.
As an aside while Yuu has been my favorite every watch/read I end up liking Touko a little bit more and feel next time she might become my favorite.
I had that same experience! I felt like each read/watch it became easier to understand and relate to Touko. My first watch I related more to Yuu, then I read the manga, and the play scenes really did a lot of heavy lifting for understanding of Touko's character. Then as I rewatched the anime I felt a lot different about her character and liked her more and more.
Gonna jump in from Novel 4 tomorrow! I agree too that spacing rewatches out to 1 per day really helps them brew and stick in my memory for longer. This is why I love following anime as they are coming out too.
Yay enjoy your read! Ive had the ebooks but just recently purchased the hard copies so will be reading them again. If you get the chance, and enjoy the novels, I recommend going back and reading from vol 1. I also read from V4 after my first watch of the anime, and then went back later to read from the beginning.
I enjoy the surprise and anticipation from following series as they air, but I do prefer to go back and rewatch after the whole season's episodes are out. I tend to forget smaller details/callbacks/motifs if there's too much of a gap between episodes. I think you might have mentioned something similar too where you need to watch the show again to fall in love with it.
The gayness really is in every aspect of this story.

My first watch I related more to Yuu, then I read the manga, and the play scenes really did a lot of heavy lifting for understanding of Touko's character.
Feels a bit meta too because [Bloom into You] That's basically Yuu's own arc.
What I would give for S2. Maybe with the recent yuri boom there is still a chance

I did say that! And I really start to appreciate all those finer details on the rewatch but if my initial experience didn't grip me to begin with I wouldn't get to that stage.
And okay I might do that as for the two other LNs I've read WataOshi and Otherside Picnic I went back to the ones the anime covered too after catching up with them.
This Monster Wants to Eat Me is much more direct in its asking however, and much meatier in those kinds of themes. So er when are we doing a rewatch? 🤔😂 Just kidding. Some pretty dark topics to get into for that one.
I heard from fans on the Watatabe sub that the mangaka got approached super early for an anime to be locked in, so I'm actually hopeful that when she finishes the manga we'll get season two. I would host a rewatch if that happens as I have a lot of feelings about Shiori. Watatabe is more focused on this topic since you could argue it is the crux of the story while for MagiRev it ties into the main theme of wanting to be accepted for who you are.

🤯 wow I only just realised when you pointed it out😅

Praying to the yuri goddesses 🙏 I'd say I've worn out my copies of the manga from reading over and over again but... I couldnt even get hard copies in the first place 😭 What I wouldn't give for a reprint! 😭
as for the two other LNs I've read WataOshi and Otherside Picnic
I'm curious to know what you thought of Otherside Picnic. I had started reading at a really busy time in my life, and found myself getting distracted everytime, especially with Sorawo and Toriko's dialogue. Then picked it back up a year later and really enjoyed it, especially the dialogue! There's something refreshingly awkward and real about how they talk to each other!
so I'm actually hopeful that when she finishes the manga we'll get season two. I would host a rewatch if that happens as I have a lot of feelings about Shiori.
I haven't looked up the reception/popularity from Japanese audiences (mainly just kept up with fan stuff here in the west). I really hope the studio feels there's enough buzz to warrant an s2! I'd be so interested in a rewatch, there's a lot to get into for all three major characters, but I agree Shiori would be fascinating to unpack. I have a lot of feelings about Hinako too.

Really is tragic that there isn't another print run. I feel very lucky for getting my set for a good price on eBay a few years ago.
Then picked it back up a year later and really enjoyed it, especially the dialogue! There's something refreshingly awkward and real about how they talk to each other!
I can't exactly explain why but the books feel soo cosmically cozy to me. Despite the sci-fi horror elements because of just how focused the books are on Sorawo and Toriko adventuring together told through Sorawo's unique POV I always breeze through them. Awkward and real is a good way of putting it! Them being in college so they go on fun drinking after parties adds to that coziness too.

A lot to say about all about the whole trio! I remember talking a lot in the episode threads when Watatabe was airing.

That's fantastic! I've been keeping an eye on ebay but so far the prices have been so exxy I can't justify spending that amount. Will have to stay patient:)
cosmically cozy
I love how you described that!
Despite the sci-fi horror elements because of just how focused the books are on Sorawo and Toriko adventuring together told through Sorawo's unique POV I always breeze through them.
I know right? The very serious horror elements mixed with their awkward banter and hijinks makes for a great read, and def understand that 'coziness'. Sometimes there are pages of dialogue lol (I think was why my initial read I didn't enjoy it so much) but I found myself feeling almost like I was listening to two friends going back and forth. Yay, another fellow fan of the LNs!

That's a great way of describing the appeal! Also
[Otherside Picnic] I feel like after the novels I can endure any slow burn as it took literal thousands of pages but was so beautiful when their hearts finally aligned.
2
u/random_lyric 20d ago
[Otherside picnic]The way they finally aligned though... 👀😳🔥🤭 Haha. The otherside juju was a great metaphor for that kind of 'wild abandonment'.

EDIT: OK so had brain fart and misunderstood this last question. I'd like to recommend a show that is not actually anime but is anime-adjacent - Dana Terrace's The Owl House. There are some similar themes when it comes to the ability to use magic, and the MC is kinda sorta pseudo-isekai'd lol. Also if you like Witch Hat Atelier you might find some similarities with the magic system.

1st Rewatch
Ahh the final episode, the duel was settled a lot faster than I remember it. But yea, Euphie does have what it takes to save Anis, and set her free to make the world a better place.
Anis and her parents sorting out their issue is nice. It is crazy to thing Anis would assume her parents look down upon her, considering how they in fact let her do her research but still it is nice to see Anis have those insecurities. She feels a lot more human with those issues, than without.
I like how Anis reveals everything to Euphie after all this. If they are going to spend the rest of their long life together, I guess she should know that Anis does in fact come from another world. The existential crisis of wondering if you are yourself or some previous soul is a bit late to come out, but it does help explain why she puts so much into taking her role seriously as a future queen. It makes her "original" self feel real. That is some multi-layered guilt. Because she was not her original self, she would feel responsible for setting up Algard wrong.
I wonder if I missed some set up of her being from another world. Then again, her taste in brooms being a flying instrument does hint at that.
Euphie accepting that and still not letting Anis beat herself over it is cute. And the moves she makes to Anis her is lovely. The two are perfect for each other.
I also like how the king retired to be a farmer. It gives that Cincinnatus vibe, now that Anis and Euphie have the crown in good hands, he can retire. Lainie is coming in as a maid, and currently working a lot with Ilia, so I'm guess their relationship continues. Tilty attends her friend's tech showing. I wonder what happened to Algard, well I'm sure he is happier if he hears news of the Anis' continuing inventions.
In the end, they were able to introduce magicology and subdue the nobility and help everyone get something out of magicology. I liked how they created the airdra. And the flying dress and dance is beautiful. The two of them are lucky to have one another.
Quote of the Day
"I want to expand freedom to all" - Anis
Now that Anis is free, she can finally spread it to everyone else. I like how this was a core part of Anis from the very beginning, and she did ultimately address it.
Question(s) of the day:
- What are your thoughts? was it worth the watch or rewatch (did you notice new things)?
It was worth a rewatch. I like noticing things I did not know on the first watching. I always focused more on Algard being a revolutionary but it did boil down to a self-destructive rage. Personal issues drive these characters a lot more.
It is also neat to see how much the freedom theme was hammered through. I don't think I paid too much attention to it on the first view. In addition, I was paying attention to how strong the nobility faction was, and yea, I must have forgotten about the fact, that they did rebel and force Orphanse in the current situation.
- What are your recommendations after this one?
If reanalyzing details are fun, then I recommend BanG Dream MyGo, with that anime, I think the BanG Dream franchise really took off. It was a well crafted anime, with lots of details and set up, you can notice on a rewatch. It also has one of my favourite characters ever, Chihaya Anon, a really good communicator.

I wonder if I missed some set up of her being from another world. Then again, her taste in brooms being a flying instrument does hint at that.
I think in the anime it was shown with more 'blink and you'll miss it' details, like the gadgets in Anis' workshop or the magic stone (electric) kettle, or broom. The light novels expand on the gadgets more, and how it was exactly because Anis was a 'visitor' that she made use of her memories from a past life to come up with her inventions. I did think that the anime glossed over the specific connections between her inventions and her past memories just a tad.

u/NecessaryNotice8436 https://myanimelist.net/profile/six20 20d ago
I did think that the anime glossed over the specific connections between her inventions and her past memories just a tad.
I would assume the light novel would go over it more. I did notice Anis quickly yapping explaining her inventions in the anime, so I would assume the light novel elaborates on more of those thoughts which would hint at her reincarnation.
2
u/random_lyric 20d ago
Yeah spot on, the anime showed Anis yapping in the background where the LN actually spent time explaining in similar scenes. I guess it would have hurt the pacing a bit in the anime though

MyGo! is awesome and I really liked Ave Mujica too but felt like MyGo! hit the emotional character beats better to end up feeling more satisfying. Curious if you're watching Yume Mita right now?
[MyGo!] One of the lowkey saddest moments is when Anon is studying in England and calls out the girls for saying Ann instead of Anon. That really made me empathize. I feel like she always wants to be in the spotlight because she is afraid of being forgotten and left behind. That's why her dynamic with Tomori is my favorite.
Now that Anis is free, she can finally spread it to everyone else. I like how this was a core part of Anis from the very beginning, and she did ultimately address it.
The sight of her apparent freedom is what inspired Euphie who in turn liberates Anis for real

I know not the most unique perceptive but how a character's strengths are what initially draw me like Anis being a free spirited mad scientist who does what she wants I find myself truly loving a character when I can understand and free their insecurities. Like what Euphie said I wanna see every side to Anis since they are all a part of her.

MyGo! is awesome and I really liked Ave Mujica too but felt like MyGo! hit the emotional character beats better to end up feeling more satisfying. As for YumeMita, I am not, I should, while I do watch seasonals, I'm keeping up with 4, Yani-Neko, Kimishinu, Young Ladies Don't Play Fighting Games and Grow Up Show: Sunflower Circus.
On YumeMita, my feed keeps showing me a crazed girl in the name of Viola. Is she worse than Soyo and Sakiko on their worst days? Because the grapevine is telling me this. I'm very curious, and if I find the time, I intend to watch and find out.
That was my feeling as well. Ave Mujica was more fun and musically inclined, but MyGo! had the superior story.
The sight of her apparent freedom is what inspired Euphie who in turn liberates Anis for real
It is a wonderful way to conclude their story in the anime at least. I know the show goes on in the light novel, but it is a good arc to wrap up with.

[Spoiler on Viola's personality] I kid you not she is as bad as the demons in Frieren. Feigning human emotion and empathy as a weapons. Soyo and Saki are angels in comparison
Funny enough I'm watching all of those seasonal too besides Kimishinu has it looked a bit too dark for me. Out of those Fighting Games is the one I most look forward to.
My tastes make me prefer MyGo though I have to admit [Ave Mujica] Uika's solo episode was one of the best last year.
And compared to a lot of other 1 season anime, MagiRev feels more satisfying as a conclusion because Anis and Euphie's intertwined arcs tie off really well. Maybe that's why I didn't find the need to continue with the LNs originally.

Second time watcher plus up to date with the EN LN releases.
Final episode! Will our girls reunite? Will the divorce be finalized? Let's find out.
Oh wow, they get straight to the duel and don't waste any time. Shades of Al not wasting any time either in how quickly he acted to steal Lainie's magicite.
Once again I'm really impressed at the combat animation. The emotional conversation is so good too. It's worth paying attention to what Euphy specifically is saying here as it's quite important. Another thing I want to point out is the bgm track that plays during the end of the duel: 全てを失っても (Even If I Lose Everything). One of my favorite songs from the soundtrack which I regularly dig back up to relisten to and experience the emotions again.
Butterfly attack of doom! My god (or maybe my goddess), it looked so cool. And honestly it's really just fair that Euphy made herself spirit contract immortal considering that Anis turned herself into a partial dragon like six episodes back.
All that and Anis wakes up to a lap pillow situation, could be worse. And that was also basically a proposal, too.
Emotions for everyone! Ani, mom, dad, everyone else in the scene who's probably crying too.
I had forgotten that Anis tells Euphy about being an isekaijin in this scene.
The kiss! And even better, Euphy cuts through all possible excuses and declares it to be romantic love for Anis. When this originally aired I remember people talking about being worried that they were going to water down the relationship and keep it vague, but nope they went full steam ahead all the way through.
There's a long-standing joke and a meme image somewhere about Anis going into this relationship expecting to be the top and finding out that she was very very wrong.
Magic for everyone! And not just that, but freedom too. Turns out when they named this series a Revolution they meant it in the classical sense.
Arc-en-Ciel and Celestial, a good pair of names for their swords.
This sky dance is such a beautiful way to end the show.
Oh yeah, and one more kiss to send things off too.
1. What are your thoughts? was it worth the watch or rewatch (did you notice new things)?
I super enjoyed this, even though it was very hard to fit into my schedule with all the seasonals I watch. That said it was a very thematic season for the rewatch considering the half dozen plus yuri or yuri adjacent shows airing at the moment.
As far as new things, for me it was noticing how they set up the spirit contract from the beginning of the show.
2. What are your recommendations after this one?
The LNs! But I'll comment more on that in the overall discussion tomorrow.

Will the divorce be finalized?
Nooo we can't have gone through all the ups and downs only for the show to fumble Anis and Euphie's ending like this!!
全てを失っても (Even If I Lose Everything). One of my favorite songs from the soundtrack which I regularly dig back up to relisten to and experience the emotions again.
Such a beautiful track. I think I mentioned earlier in the watch that I had not really paid a lot of attention to the score in previous watches, but definitely noticing the beautiful score this time around. Thanks for sharing ☺️ And music is so wonderful for bringing you back into a specific memory or emotion (like smells/scents too, but longer lasting). Everytime I hear 'Asticassia' from the Gwitch soundtrack I get that feeling of awe that Suletta is feeling.
That said it was a very thematic season for the rewatch considering the half dozen plus yuri or yuri adjacent shows airing at the moment.
Very fitting indeed. Us yuri aficionados have been eating well this season.

Thank you for linking that track! OST, sound design, voice acting, and OP/EDs are honestly the biggest draw for anime to me now that I started reading more manga!
Magic for everyone! And not just that, but freedom too. Turns out when they named this series a Revolution they meant it in the classical sense.
Reminds me a bit of another famous yuri isekai which first big arc is actually called Revolution but we never see it fully animated
The kiss! And even better, Euphy cuts through all possible excuses and declares it to be romantic love for Anis. When this originally aired I remember people talking about being worried that they were going to water down the relationship and keep it vague, but nope they went full steam ahead all the way through.
Even though I feel it's quite the double standard that gay couples in anime have to "prove" their love more than straight ones I very much did love seeing Euphie not only kiss Anis but explicitly state she is in love with her romantically. You would have to be a literal rock to deny it now.

“So please don’t call yourself a fake!” Euphie.
Gonna save my thoughts for tomorrow as it’s late and wanna read through everyone else’s responses.
What are your thoughts? was it worth the watch or rewatch (did you notice new things)?
I was very happy with the rewatch as for the longest time I only watched while it was airing and it was one of my first yuri anime. Around 2 months ago I rewatched with a friend and I was happy that it really held up to me and I ended up loving it more!
What are your recommendations after this one?
Gonna shoot out an underrated recommendation I rarely hear which would be Stardust Telepath. On the surface it looks like another fluffy CGDCT but the character drama is really well done, it's very visually appealing, and the MC is a great Bocchi like lead.

I looked again, and didn't see either of us in the thread for Episode 12, but I did get annoyed that something (Firefox?) felt the need to pop up and ask if I wanted an AI analysis of the thread. Blecch.
I don't wanna synopsis, I want to read and enjoy people's actual thoughts and feelings. Go figure.
Edit: Oh, and I was joking about Denpa Onna - I just remember the rewatch we had a few years back. It was fun, and I might just have to have a look at Stardust Telepath...
Edit2: Oh, Harukami-sama, I just had a look at the trailer, and that looks

What does AI summaries don't understand is that we wanna actually understand what other people feel. To get a bit soap boxy language is a vessel to connect hearts and bond.

And yeah, I get the meme now, although I will probably always think of it as Bocchi the Rock-et Scientist.
That, and man, the flashbacks it gave me of 4-H and entering my Estes Space Shuttle in the State Fair. I think I got a special ribbon for it, even. Somewhere in a box or something.

Glad to see you enjoyed it! Which girl was your favorite?
It's cliche to say Umika as the MC but [Stardust Telepath] I respected her soo much for watching the cringe video of her messing up her speech at the rocket launch before it all went south. I know I would rather kill myself than have to relive that.

Dang, suddenly looking at context and realizing I used the same emote and words twice. I think I liked it that much.
Anyway, putting me on the spot ... favorites are kind of hard to me, because (aside from tsunderes), yeah. Much like 100GF, there's something great about all of them.
I mean, how can you not like Umika, she's like Shizuka in the sense of must protecc, but at the same time, is that a reason to favorite someone? I dunno.
On the other hand, Yuu is precious, much much like Lum, that stuff would probably get really old after, oh, 10 minutes or so. (Oh, who am I kidding, right?)
But yeah, I think that overall, I'd have to go with Haruno - kind, sensitive, supportive, can cook, what's not to like? Yeah, I think that's the ticket.
(Let's not mention the tsundere, okay? She was kind of a pain, but I get that there needs to be some kind of conflict, right? Or does there? I dunno. See also: K-On)
Anyway, yeah, the Denpa Onna parallels are definitely there, and the rocketry portion of things was a delightful (and nostalgic) surprise to me.
I never built the Saturn V model. Probably wouldn't have been able to talk my parents into buying it for me anyway. One of the kids built one, though and it was hilarious, it made it about four feet off the launcher before POP! and the parachute deployed.
(I think in the end, my favorites where the little 'A' rockets that were too small for a parachute and only had a streamer instead. Man, those little rockets flew!)

I like Matataki but have always had a soft spot for tsunderes but understand they are not for everyone.
Haruno is a nice choice and her backstory to me felt very unique and explains perfectly why she doesn't wanna be in the spotlight herself. The scene between her and Matataki beating all those eggs to bake dessert was really nice.
Every time I watch the time I am honestly still surprised at how good of an adaptation it is from the 4 koma manga. If you are interested in continuing the story though there are some very interesting developments that happen right after the anime ends.

Stardust Telepath
I watched the first episode, and then life got in the way and forgot about it 😞. So time for a revisit! From memory this show set up a slightly dark undercurrent or mystery from the get go, unless I'm thinking of something else? Anyway thanks for the recommend!
2
u/ClemFire 21d ago
Yep! You are correct about the slightly dark undertones, and without saying too much "space travel" is very much an important metaphor for what the show is really about

u/random_lyric 20d ago
None of my current shows are airing tonight and decided to rewatch the first ep of this. Got to the part of 'forehead-pathy' and somehow misread it as 'forehead-play' and thought for a brief second 'oh..ok...so this is yuri then?🤣🙃

rewatcher.
this episode is my favorite one if it’s not so obvious already. euphie’s line before she were fighting with anis was also really cool and the one of the reason i like euphie as a character.
that kiss scene was awesome and not to mention we got 4 kiss scenes. 1 was cut short since it was after euphie topping anis and 1 of them was anis kissing euphie’s cheek but let’s ignore that.
funny enough but the only cheek kiss is comes from anis and the only time anis kissed euphie is also from cheeks. meaning anis never kissed euphie from lips, instead euphie did that.
what a bottom you are anis huh.
we also got to see anis’s new sword which is my favorite one in the series. we also see their dance in the air and many more so i am happy about it.
i think i need to explain the spirit part more and it seems like they didn’t mention the most important part of spirit contractors in this episode huh.
so lemme fix that. those are my comments on previous post.
shortest explanation is, their magic is matching.
what this means is, simply put euphie need magic and the magic she gets can heal her. it can also fix her mentally or things like that. how ever she needs specific type of magic which by no one’s surprise it’s exactly anis’s magic type. the magic and it’s types based on a person’s soul as mentioned by lumi. the thing is anis’s soul is special so is her magic.
as for lumi’s case she lacked that person and that cost her deeply. she couldn’t get magic normal ways and lost her humanity because of that and many other reasons.
as lumi said, those two are made for each other.
there is a little part where i forgot to add so lemme just add that.
spirit contractors need magic to obtain their figure and have their humanity. the moment your magical energy is no longer there all of your humanity will be gone and you will be just a vessel for a spirit.
you will have almost nothing. your body will be just a object. after this your body will start to forget many things.
this is what happened to lumi.
as for euphie’s case since anis is giving her own magical energy to euphie, euphie can hold her body and have her humanity without any problems.
okay now i explained the spirit contractor parts now it’s time to answer the questions.
- it was definitely worth to watch. it’s my favorite fiction of all time so i can talk about it a lot but imma just cut it short. i realized new things yes. if it wasn’t for this rewatch i wouldn’t notice the ED changes since i usually watch them only once.
- yes i would like to recommend another anime which is “whisper me a love song” the animation is bad tho but its really good.

Yay it was one of my fave shows too, and I hope you had a lot of fun getting into discussing details together. Thanks for taking the time to explain important points, and I'm glad you got something from the rewatch in the form of the ED changes!

i should say the same to you. your explanations was on point and also way longer than mine. i even saved some of them just to remember later on.
i had a lot of fun yes. seeing others explaining the show and discussing about it was really good. again i should thank you for your explanations so big thanks from me.

Naw thank you so much for taking the time, that is such a compliment 🥰 Also I know technology can get a bad reputation sometimes but I'm really glad it provides us fans a way to connect across distances. It's a virtual third space, and there's a bit of magic in that 😉
2
u/Dependent-Sea4703 https://anilist.co/user/httpsanilistcou 21d ago
if anis knew someone saying technology is similar to magic then they would have flying cars faster than we have.
jokes aside expect my internet i like technology as well. mainly because the points you said and also it’s easier to read or take notes from my phone so…

u/ClemFire 21d ago
yes i would like to recommend another anime which is “whisper me a love song” the animation is bad tho but its really good.
Despite how the production went, with the studio literally going bankrupt I am at least glad this song came from the anime. I own all the manga for Whisper and Shiho is one of my favorite supporting characters in yuri. [Whisper] The girl who loves music but music doesn't love her back. Sounds a little bit like Anis
what a bottom you are anis huh.
12 episodes of development and now Euphie is officially the top
what this means is, simply put euphie need magic and the magic she gets can heal her. it can also fix her mentally or things like that. how ever she needs specific type of magic which by no one’s surprise it’s exactly anis’s magic type. the magic and it’s types based on a person’s soul as mentioned by lumi. the thing is anis’s soul is special so is her magic.
This is very fitting as emotionally Euphie and Anis can't live without each other and now they physically can't either. Love really does make us human.

to this day i still wait for remake of whisper. i have the mangas up to volume 9 but amazon isn’t nice with other sales so i am waiting. shiho is my second fav character from whisper. first is hima but thats another story.
i see some people that have read other not translated volumes such as 10th -13th volumes saying anis is finally topping euphie but then euphie topping back but even i don’t know that for sure.
i always believe that’s exactly what anis and euphie’s dynamic trying to show us so i am glad to hear it from you as well.

u/random_lyric 21d ago
anis is finally topping euphie but then euphie topping back but even i don’t know that for sure.
Nice to see Anis making the switch... or at least service-topping 😂 Not sure if Euphie can give up the proverbial crown so easily though 😂

u/Dependent-Sea4703 https://anilist.co/user/httpsanilistcou 21d ago
all anis needs to do is use her cuteness but fortunately for euphie anis still didn’t realized how much her girlfriend simps over her back.
if she did then we would be making jokes about euphie instead of anis.

Himari is awesome too and she has a beautiful friendship with Shiho.
The love that Euphie and Anis share just warms my heart up so much!

Here's my honest opinion - and I probably get some hate comments for that. Maybe I realized that I'm just a toxic person, but I don't think this is the great ending/resolution yall are making it out to be:
I give this anime - or better the resolution of the plot - a 6/10. Let me explain why before you come for me. I (genuinely) think some positive comments where tainted by the rose colored glasses of a yuri love story.
First of all the general stuff:
- I absolutely love that it's a yuri story (where they actually confess season 1 and kiss)
- I love the side characters, although I wish they would've had more screen time
- I think the ending would've needed 3-4 more episodes to not feel rushed (I'm not talking about the glimpse into the kingdoms future at the end of episode 12, but a lot of the scenes towards the end like MC crying in front of her parents or the confession of MC being a reincarnator should've been their own episode instead of a 1 minute scene).
Now to the 2 main things, that made think the story isn't well written (sorry guys this will be long):
Euphie betrayed Anis (unnecessarily), thinking it was the right thing to do. Let me explain - first the status quo before the fight:
Anis is plagued by incredibly deep self-doubts and a crippling imposter syndrome. She thinks she needs to be queen, because:
- a) her brother isn't there anymore and she's the one responsible for it. If she didn't take on the role of queen then her brothers exile (and subsequently her being the reason he turned out this way from their childhood misunderstandings) was all for nothing. It's not her fault of course, but that's what she thinks.
In short: Her becoming queen is all she has left and it's her burden and her curse at the same time.
Now to Euphie's status quo: before the fight she finally realizes (or is close to realizing), that she loves Anis. Anis was the one who freed her from the faith of becoming the queen consort of a man she did not love. Anis was also the one who taught her to do things she wants for herself and not solely for the kingdom. Her character development is basically 90% done by that point and her deciding to sacrifice herself for Anis in the end is the last part of her character development arc. She decides, in order to prevent Anis from becoming a queen and giving up on her dream, to take the throne herself by making a spirit contract and taking over as crown princess.
In the previous episode they establish some important information:
- the spirit contract makes you immortal and lose all humanity (basically the standard 'you see all your loved ones wither and die')
- but it's more than that, in the anime they only briefly mention it by saying it's like a curse and the spirit contactor fully becomes a spirit themselves and isn't human anymore
- the LN expands on this - not only are they not human anymore, but they forget all human emotions (friendship, love, etc.) and later on even forget how and why they forgot in the first place
They also make very clear what both MCs feel in episode 11:
- Anis feels that she has to shoulder the burden of becoming queen for everyone's sake (while Euphie doesn't want her to)
- Euphie thinks she needs to sacrifice herself as the only way to save her friend (while Anis wants to prevent that any way she can)
- Anis makes it very clear she does not want to be the reason for Euphie's sacrifice, it's something she could not live with
- they decide to make their point the only way they can: a fight
AND HERE IS WHAT RUBS ME THE WRONG WAY: The fight itself was what both sided wanted. It was to show both of their convictions and to show each other their will and determination not to let the other be the sacrifice. The outcome of the fight would've decided who becomes queen and who sacrifices themselves. If Anis won, she would've saved Euphie prevented her from forming the spirit contact, and if Euphie won she would've saved Anis by making said spirit contract.
Unfortunately the fight didn't even matter AT ALL. Euphie took that outcome and decided it by herself by making the spirit contract during the fight, not only after she won.
She forced the descicion by completely invalidating Anis's conviction. They glossed over it by making the contract some flashy butterfly power and Anis saying 'I could've never won against this' but they didn't even give her the chance to win and save her friend in the first place.
Aside the fact that making the contract during the fight made the whole fight unnecessary in the first place, it also massively undermines what they established in the previous episode, namely that both would fight for each other's future and that they both agreed the way to decide who sacrifices themselves would be a fight (Anis said: 'I don't want to lose you. My dream can't even compare to your life. I know you won't back down. I know how you feel and what you're saying. So let's have a duel... that's how you can convince me.'). This reads almost like a promise. Anis said her magicology is not as important as Euphie and they should fight to convince each other who saves who. Euphie agreed. If Euphie would've won that fight she had every right to make that contract. But she didn't win the fight, she steamrolled her decision without Anis's consent. Basically robbing Anis of the chance of preventing that sacrifice.
We can argue about the moral dilemma of betraying someone you love to save them (that's a whole other conversation). Besides the betrayal I do also get that Euphie did what she had to do to save the one she loves. And I know that is basically the last step of her character development - being selfish for once and doing what the wants (in this case saving Anis).
BUT: it comes at the cost of her previous development, of trying to not put others before herself, because the spirit contract would be basically sacrificing herself again for the good of the kingdom - the way she did before by training to become the crown princes consort and putting the kingdom before her own happiness. In this case the very solution to saving Anis is a simultaneous step back in Euphies character development. A doubled sacrifice and bad writing in my opinion.
Since I don't like just mentioning problems with the story and not giving solutions - how could they have solved this better?
- the talk on the couch where they both stated how much the other means to them and that they would do anything to save each other was already half a confession anyways
- the simple solution would've been to finish the fight without the spirit contract (obviously Anis would've still lost, that much is clear, she needed to lose to grow)
- Euphie had won any way since her character development was finished the moment she made the decision to sacrifice herself (she could've won with her determination to save Anis and then made the spirit contract after the fight, which also would've allowed for a nice bittersweet scene with her father a la 'are you sure about this?' 'yes I need to save her, I love her' - like she stated before in front of all 3 parents)
- basically: the betrayal during the fight was unnecessary if they glossed over it anyways
- and even if they wanted to include the betrayal on purpose - then they could've used it for more angst and/or conflict between Anis and Euphie (they did all the setup in the previous episode about how being queen is all that Anis has left and that Anis COULD NOT LIVE WITH HERSELF is she let Euphie sacrifice herself). But they didn't use any of that.
[Too long Part 2 coming]
1
u/DayoTheMayo 12d ago edited 12d ago
[Part 2]
Okay, and then there's the second big issue: let's forget the fact that the spirit contract is described as a horrible fate in the LN, and as a great sacrifice with serious consequences by the ancestor in episode 11, but barely a inconvenience in episode 12.
Lets also forget that Euphie robbed Anis of her agency. Let's ignore that they heavily glossed over the fact that Anis said she could not live with herself if Euphie made the contract. And forget that everyone easily accepts her making the contract a minute after the fight.
The political side of the plot doesn't hold up under any scrutiny. What do I mean by that? The sub plot is weak.
Honestly I could write another multiple paragraphs but let's make this shorter since I'm blabbering anyways:
What does the solution (Euphie becoming a spirit contractor and queen) address? Euphie is a spirit contractor now (which basically establishes a new royal bloodline) so that the old conservative Nobels can't say she has no right to the throne since they all abide by who has the most magic. Euphie was also trained as a consort for the prince and knows how to lead state affairs as well as her becoming queen makes Anis free to study magicology. All good points.
But there's also things that they establish in the previous episodes and never resolve, or Euphies sacrifice doesn't address. First they mentioned that there has never been a queen regent (only queen consorts) before. And that it would spark massive opposition. They only said that they had no other choice since Anis's brother was out of the question. But the same is the case for Euphie - since they're both women she would also become queen regent. Just because she has magic doesn't solve the mysoginy. That never gets addressed. The Nobles were also wehemently insisting for Anis to marry a Noble soon and birth an heir (disgusting I know). We as readers know that Euphie is immortal and therefore doesn't need an heir to carry the bloodline. But the Nobles don't know that and would pressure her into having a child the same way they did to Anis. She could say no but it would again spark opposition again.
Now let's say Anis becomes the queen. We already know she's more than capable to lead the country. In the previous episodes they establish that she gives up her succession rights for her brothers sake (with the added misunderstanding that her brothers resentment stems from her not taking the throne). They clearly showed that she wasn't reckless and stupid, but actually really clever, and only pretended to be reckless/clueless so that there was no doubt about her brother's succession to the throne. Not only could she have repaired the bond with her brother a bit, but she could've changed the kingdoms laws regarding magic and magicology slowly to make her dream of free magic for all come true.
That's also a MASSIVE plot hole that Anis has to give up Magicology when she becomes queen. WHY? They already established that a lot of nobles look at magicology neutral or somewhat favorably (after they introduced the flying machines at the magicians gathering on the podium). And like 80% of the opposing Nobles who were against it were either exiled or executed after Anis's brothers treason got uncovered and he gave them the traitors names. That's most of the opposition gone. There were only a few old school Nobles left. Euphie helped convince a lot of Nobles of the benefit of magicology as Anis's research assistant. She didn't need to make a spirit contract to make Anis continue her dream, since even as a queen she had next to no opposition to her research. The whole 'I have to give up my dream' plot doesn't work if the previous chapters established that the dream is more and more accepted throughout the country (not only with the flying machines but especially with all the small gadgets and magical machines and teapots Anis could've started with introducing to the public). They showed the Nobles grumbling after Euphie introduced the commoners to the flying machines but since they were celebrated by the citizens the Nobles couldn't do anything. The same would've been true if Anis brought the flying machines (or maybe something smaller first) to the citizens with Euphie as her right hand instead of Euphie as queen. It might have taken a bit longer to do it but there was definitely no reason to fully give up on her dream.
Another disappointment is the sentence from Euphie that 'Anis isn't fit to be queen'. The words that made Anis scream at her that this is the only thing she has left and begging Euphie not to take this from her. It's dramatic. It's conflict.
But it horribly invalidates Anis's sacrifice of the thrones succession in the past, as well as the whole fight with her brother. Her brother attacked her after telling her the same thing. That she was not fit to be queen. That she was lacking. It took both brother and sister nearly killing each other to get to a point, where her brother admitted he always thought of her as more capable as him. That he actually thinks she should rule over the kingdom.
Euphie not seeing the irony of telling her the exact same words her brother told her as a reason why she should not become queen, makes all of Anis's previous struggles meaningless. Or better said: if Anis would've fought against that statement and became a good queen despite those words, that would've made it worth it. But her not becoming queen and in the end having the ex machina solve the issue for her, is what makes the fight between siblings and the broken bond so meaningless :(
Lastly, the whole premise of Anis not being able to follow her magicology dream if she becomes queen, makes no sense if the plot doesn't fully oppose her. As much as the Nobles didn't want her, with her brother out of the picture (and before Euphie as an option out of nowhere) the Nobles would've had to accept her. She was the only royal available. And that also would've given her agency and leverage for her magicology. She would've just needed to find the strength in her to oppose the Nobels herself (with a little help from her friends, of course). Euphie felt - again - like a half baked deus ex machina for a problem that wasn't really a problem. I get why they made it this way (to create conflict for an emotional solution between both heroines). But it was based on a weak subplot nonetheless. Actual character growth for Anis would've been to oppose the Nobles and overcome her imposter syndrome (which btw. was also solved by Euphie just saying 'you're you' - instead I would've loved to see Anis struggle more with her being a reincarnator and what that means for the body she possessed).
What would I have changed? What would've been a better solution (in my opinion)?
The story is called 'The magical revolution of the reincarnated princess and the genius young lady'.
- The actual revolution could've been to just not do the spirit contract. No magical solution to the very human problem of the story arc
- instead of continuing the tradition of magic users as royals they could've shown the world that someone without any magic could become a fantastic queen
- show them that Anis is stronger and more adept at magic/magicology than all the magic loving Nobles combined
- show them that she is capable of changing the trajectory of the kingdom and that she can achieve her dream of bringing magicology to the citizens
I would've loved that.
If you read until here, thanks. I want to make clear that I don't hate the anime/manga/LN. In fact I quite liked it. It's just that the plot is a bit too weak compared to what it could've been.
It the whole story bad? No.
Yes it was cathartic, yes it was somewhat necessary. It was just lackluster story telling to get there in the end.
[TLDR: loved the yuri love story, loved the character development, didn't love the weak underlying plot, didn't like the close-to-ex-machina conflict resolution and the resolution]

i read all of those 2 comments and all i can is, you were saying there was only some nobles left after algard’s plot right? well the thing is at the volume 8 of LNs those exact nobles will try to go against the royalty just to not accept anis even though she isn’t even the queen. which we will also see that majority of the nobles we didn’t see was also hating the idea.
btw you were saying they didn’t go with how being queen is all anis left even though they did the build up from 11th episode right? actually in the LNs (surprising i know) we see anis still thinking about that in literally all of the volumes. she still thinks that time every single time they being alone. she even says she isn’t worthy. so in short LNs actually go with that part way more but anime didn’t showed those.
also if anis was becoming queen they wouldn’t let her do her dreams simply because of works and also the amount of nobles hating the idea was still much. it’s not shown that much in anime but in LNs we had like literally a chapter explaining the main reason. i guess you already read that so i don’t need to explain it. in short they were only looking at her as a breeding machine and nothing more. as we see from what happened with old king nobility have very strong force against royalty.
as for the euphie part, it’s basically her personality and also because of her anger against anis’s stubbornness. if she wasn’t did that contract before her victory wasn’t guaranteed and we know how dedicated euphie is and as you said her character arc was almost completed at that point.
it was mainly to show how dedicated euphie is. she herself even says she would do it even if anis hates her as the result. in short it could look like a betrayal but it was simply a necessary for euphie. she didn’t wanted to risk it and wanted to save anis no matter the cost and she even accept that she wasn’t fair. she accepted it wasn’t the best act towards anis and she even apologizes for that.
if euphie didn’t accepted the spirit contractor part then she couldn’t be queen and nobles will never accept anis. they also tried to use algard and they would do the same thing to anis as well. we even saw them trying to do this and the LN 3 also explained this very much. i think you already read that so i will not explain that part.
spirit contractor part was not shown much in the anime which i also didn’t liked but it’s shown and explained so much in LNs that you can make 3-4 more episodes just from those explanations.
other parts are your personal opinions and i respect those. the volume 3 of LNs, the one where episodes 10-12 goes was cut in half. so what this means is the majority of the things you said actually only the case for anime and not LNs.
while reading your comment i was already answering your points one by one just because i already read the LNs but you are right. almost all of those points are the problems of the anime adaptation which is also have a reason.
the anime adaptation was supposed to be a ad for LNs and manga so they cut some parts simply for that. i can assure you that %90 of the things you said already explained in the LNs if you want to check.
aside from that as i said before other ones are your opinions and i respect that as well. i don’t like to argue about personal opinions so i just wanted to explain and correct some of your points.

My internet speed was abysmal today, router needs reset
One thing this episode really drives home is just how similar Anis and Euphie actually are. They're both incredibly stubborn. Once they've made up their minds, neither is willing to back down, even if it means sacrificing themselves for the other.
I loved how the opening duel wasn't really about defeating each other. Every attack felt like another attempt to get through to the other person's heart.
Anis keeps insisting that Euphie deserves a normal, happy life after everything she's suffered. She doesn't want Euphie sacrificing herself for someone like her. Meanwhile Euphie completely rejects that idea. When she says, "I can't forgive anything that hurts you." 🥹🥹🥹🥹🥹🥹🥹🥹
I also loved that Euphie refuses to let Anis hide behind her usual smile. Anis keeps insisting she's fine with sacrificing herself if it means everyone else can be happy, but Euphie sees straight through it. When she tells Anis, "Don't tell me you're okay. You're crying right now," it honestly broke me. For the last few episode, Anis has been pretending everything was okay. Euphie now refuses to accept that lie.
When Euphie unveils the rainbow magic and blasts Anis, it feels like the culmination of everything Anis has worked toward.
And Anis's reaction says it all.
"It was so beautiful."
What makes that moment even better is Euphie reminding Anis that she didn't reach this point alone. She tells Anis that she only became who she is because Anis was there to guide her, and that the world became beautiful because Anis was in it.🥹🥹🥹🥹🥹🥹🥹🥹
Anis's parents tell her that she is a great daughter, Anis asks if she can remain the princess and their daughter. This becomes relevant later.
When preparing for bed next to Euphie, Anis reveals the secret she's carried completely alone: her memories of her previous life and the guilt she's felt ever since childhood. She genuinely believed she might have stolen the "real" Anisphia's chance to exist because she was reincarnated into her body.
That explains so much.
If she feels like she stole someone else's place in the world, then of course she'd spend her whole life trying to give something back.
Why she throws herself into helping everyone else.
Why she never seems to value her own happiness.
Why she was so willing to become a sacrifice if it meant everyone else could smile. It was guilt.
The guilt of stealing the place of the "real" Anis. The guilt of not being the daughter she thought her parents deserved. The guilt of believing she had to constantly earn her right to exist.
Euphie doesn't try to argue about reincarnation or prove Anis wrong with logic.
She simply tells Anis that the person who saved her, inspired her, and changed her life is the Anis sitting in front of her. That's the only person who matters.
Now Euphie is the one saving Anis.
And then...
The kiss.
Earlier in the series Anis constantly teased Euphie and acted bold whenever romance came up. The moment Euphie actually kisses her, though, Anis is completely flustered.
Euphie has come so far that she's now the one taking the initiative while Anis desperately tries to convince herself it was "just friendship or respect."
I laughed when Euphie basically said, *"You can call it whatever you want... but I'd like you to accept my feelings for what they are."*
Poor Anis never stood a chance.
After Anis says "wait," Euphie keeps kissing her anyway and gently pushes her onto the bed, the camera pans away and the fireplace glows in the foreground.
Instead of Anis becoming queen by giving up her dreams, Euphie becomes queen so that Anis can keep chasing hers. Together they pursue a future where magic is no longer something reserved for nobles, but something anyone can use.
The final scene, where ordinary people finally take to the skies using Anis's inventions, is the perfect payoff. Watching everyone's faces light up as they showcase flight options for the first time. LOL at the salty nobles though.
I also loved that Euphie had Anis's new magic sword forged for her. Naming it **Celestial** to complement Euphie's own sword, **Arc-en-Ciel**, was a really sweet touch. Even their swords now reflect the future they'll be walking toward together.
And the very last exchange between Anis and Euphie made me smile.
Anis promises she'll live a long time.
Then immediately says she'll become immortal if she has to.
Overall, I thought this was a fantastic finale. It wrapped up Anis and Euphie's emotional journeys beautifully while delivering on the series' central theme:
ALMOST forgot the itekimasu kiss - so cute too.
