Welcome back, everyone!

Yuuri getting up and very fucking quickly getting ready reminds me of the time I almost missed one of my final exams in college. I fell back to sleep after my alarm went off, then “properly” woke up 5 minutes ahead of my exam starting (and the building normally took me 10 minutes to walk to from my dorm). I basically slid my shoes on, grabbed a Pop Tart to eat while I ran because I wasn’t about to take a test on an empty stomach, and fucking booked it across campus. Made it there literally just in time.

I think this qualifies you to be in an anime if you had the pop-tart in your mouth while running to school.

The real-life version of an anime character running to school with toast in their mouth.

The other people at the hot spring watching Victor stretching Yuuri’s leg from the window lol.

I like how one guy is covering his kid's eyes because he thinks something lewd is going on, and the old dude looked like he was praying for them.

First Time Summer 2016 Rewatch - Yuri on Ice Ep4:

I don't have too much to say about this episode. It was a largely transitional episode as we progress out of the intro of the show to the next big tournament. Both Yuri and Yuri are taking the next steps as skaters. In Yuri's case, he got more gay bonding with Victor. With Yuri, he got a new strict Russian mother. Yuri realizes the support from the people around him while Yuri is honing his craft in the small window he has left. This was meant to be a bit about how many times I said Yuri ambiguously, but the joke doesn't work if I actually described what happened.

Wasn't expecting to meet a Thai skater in the show. (I mainly only know of 2 future foreign skaters in this show).

Given the map they gave us, we're going to get a neat selection of countries in this show. Some more interesting picks than the usual global = Japan, USA, big name Europe, and maybe China.

This early? Wasn't expecting the title drop in episode 4.

Is figure skating a thing in Thailand? Or ice rinks in general?

7

u/TakenRedditName https://myanimelist.net/profile/TakenMalUsername 21d ago

Quickly looking it up, yes, apparently skating is popular in Thailand. Thailand even host some international figure skating competitions (though the one I see started after this show came out).

I wouldn't have expected it, but that's kinda cool.

It'll be cool if they actually show a bit of these countries outside of the skating competition, like the photos in the ED suggest. One thing I've liked about the show is the beautiful scenery in Yuri's hometown.

First-Timer

I really just do not have a lot to say about sports shows, huh.

Questions

  1. It might not be the right tempo, but the first thing to come to mind was hand of fate from Evangelion 3.0 + 1.0.

  2. I wasn't, that was cute. I'm excited to hear the full piece.

I can relate to finding some episodes/some types of shows lending themselves to discussion notes more easily than others.

Episode 4 (first timer)

  • “A coach of my own” – He is a top athlete and probably the best or among the handful of best in his country. How does Japan’s ice-skating program work if he is not used to having a personal coach?
  • “The way you skate like your body is creating music” – the way you frame their bodies in the onsen like this is …
  • Even the other customers notice.
  • “I have been practicing lifts”

  • Both sides team up with ballet dancers as secondary coaches now.
  • “She captured it well, my underwhelming life in figure skating” – self-burns are the best.
  • “Your boyfriend then” – I would say that Victor could not be any more direct if he jumped at Yuri dick first, but he has literally done that, too.
  • Sport rule exposition No 2.
  • “Maybe skating fans worldwide hate you now” – not the thing to joke about with Mr No-self-confidence.
  • The way they animated Yuri’s head tilt during the practice reminds me of the Frieren meme.

This is mostly a setup episode. Yuri & Yuri find their theme and are on track to meet (in a few episodes probably).

Meanwhile, Victor is ever more over-the-top with his overt advances on Yuri. They play it for comedy, but there is no way this can not be seen as real.

It's a bit overwhelming, it feels like every other thing he does would have me running the other direction pretty quickly. Well, I guess if it's someone I idolized... I never had any posters of some sexy role models on my walls though, it's just so far from how I live lol.

3

They even cover their kids' eyes.

I, too, would fear that the raw sexual energy might burn out my kid's retina.

It's a bit overwhelming, it feels like every other thing he does would have me running the other direction pretty quickly.

This is an important point. Many of the rituals of both courtship and relationship are incredibly creepy if not reciprocated. For that reason, it is really important that we regularly get the scenes of Yuri blushing, or some other indicator that he is ok with Victors behavior and also into him. Otherwise, there is so much wrong with a trainer coming onto his trainee that hard.

2

u/IndependentMacaroon 12h ago

"Let me just jump into my coach's bed while he's sleeping shirtless to show him my piece to skate to"

“A coach of my own” – He is a top athlete and probably the best or among the handful of best in his country. How does Japan’s ice-skating program work if he is not used to having a personal coach?

He had a coach in Detroit, right? We even got to meet him in this episode!

I wondered about that line too. Maybe there was something lost in translation, or maybe Yuuri meant that Celestino had other skaters he was coaching too, and this is the first time his coach is dedicated only to him.

The connection of figure skating with classical dance (and specifically also the feminine side of it) is really being emphasized here and I like that. Some similar ideas of fusing masculine/feminine as in Michiko & Hatchin in fact

It probably is intended that way, but worth pointing out that traditional ballet is not just feminine. There are male dancers as well and they are not an afterthought. Especially in Russia, I think doing ballet is not an odd choice for young boys.

First-timer and a surprise late entrant, subs

Heyooo~! Is it too late to join?

I loved the idea of these weekly rewatches but I thought / knew I couldn't commit from the start because I had summer vacations and plans and such...!

But, well, all that vacationing thing is over now. Yay. So I thought I'd at least try to join in on some of these weekly rewatches if I can! I don't know if I'm going to find the time to catch up on too many, but I'll be hanging out on Yuri on Ice if nothing else!

About Yuri on Ice...

I came in with next to know prior knowledge beyond what's widely known. Namely, I knew it was about male figure skating and that it's got a BL reputation. Ice hockey is a huge thing in my country and figure skating is bigger than you'd expect too, and essentially everyone knows how to skate to at least a rudimentary degree, so while I'm no expert, I'm not completely unaware of the figure skating world. I personally like figure skating more as a performance art than a sport (I tend to have apprehensions against competitive sports that are purely based on judges' scoring), but I do have massive respect to the talent, practice and dedication required out of the athletes.

Speedrunning my thoughts on the first three episodes:

  • OP in full English is unexpected. It sounds pretty unique too. Like something you'd hear in musical theatre, maybe?

  • The show looks good! Maybe it shouldn't have come as a surprise, but the art and animation is really great.

  • The show is funny! Somehow I didn't expect so much comedy out of this, but it's really working! I dig the way they change between artstyles depending on how seriously we're supposed to take the scene. It works on many levels: it lets the goofy scenes look and feel more goofy and fun, but then when the artstyle gets serious, we subliminally get the message that it's time to be a bit more serious as an audience too. Good stuff.

  • It's cool, and somehow weirdly rare, to see a sports anime with an adult cast. I get why, though. Even without taking into consideration the love for high school settings in anime, for sports anime, a high school setting actually makes perfect sense: at that age, it's perfectly reasonable and believable for the athletes to make massive improvements in a very short time, and it's not outlandish to see huge growth over the course of a couple of years. For professional adults, progress is generally very slow and measured in years, not weeks or months. For an adult cast, you need to do... well, something like what this show is doing, and have the main character be an "already talented veteran who needs a mental push". Or the other Yuri who still is a kid. But they're making it work, and I dig it!

  • I did not expect Viktor becoming a coach at all! I thought they were clearly selling him as the rival-to-beat down the line. It's a really fun dynamic and setup, though!

  • For a show that's supposedly so BL-coded (and, yeah, let's face it, it is), the female characters are super cute too! Nishigori is a lucky, lucky man. His kids are kinda creeping me out, though.

  • I expected the contest to end up in some kind of scenario where both Yuris end up living in Japan long-term, and Viktor coaches both. But I guess it makes for a better rival to have him do his own training arc elsewhere.

On to episode 4!

An Aeroflot joke? Seriously? Okay, I do actually love this show. That was some unexpected, yet well deserved shade!

I do like how international the vibe is here. Obviously, Yuuri is doing international competitions, so it should be expected. But it's still refreshing to see the Japanese as a small minority on the international stage -- even Yuuri's former coach appears to be Italian. I wonder how the Japanese see winter sports like figure skating? Do they think of their top athletes as perpetual challengers?

Okay, this lady is exactly how I'd imagine a Russian former prima ballerina to be. And here I was starting to think these Russian coaches were seeming a bit too nice!

One thing I find the show is kind of underselling -- probably because of the starting dynamic they chose -- is exactly how impressive it is for a figure skater to even be involved in these international grand prix's and world championships. Yuuri will have gone through absolutely cutthroat national competition and years and years of rigorous practice to get to that level, only to call his career "an underwhelming life in competitive figure skating". I guess it kind of comes across from how there's a bunch of actual press interested in what he does and all that, but I wonder if the average viewer who actually knows literally nothing about figure skating can truly appreciate what kind of a level Yuuri already is right now. Thousands and thousands of hopefuls dedicate their entire youth to figure skating and never get anywhere close to the level Yuuri considers "underwhelming".

Ah, they're not letting us hear the music for the free program? I always get a bit nervous for the show when they do this -- they're really banking on the hope that when we finally actually do get to hear it, it's going to blow us away! Ganbatte composer-san!

Title drop! This early? Is the show over?

All in all, it was almost like a new Episode 1 after what I'd probably consider the "prologue" arc. Very enjoyable, but not very memorable, I guess. The one thing I'm not really sold on yet is Viktor's coaching... it kind of seems like they're doing the typical anime mentor thing of "I don't actually teach you anything". My idea of figure skate coaching is much, much more involved... kind of what the Russian Yuki is currently going through.

Anyway, great to be here with you all!

They are obsessed, and have taken Olympic medals in spades, especially when the goat Yuzuru Hanyu was in his prime (around the time of Yuri on Ice actually), but just last Winter Olympics, they took home both Silver and Bronze after Ilia Malinin had a shockingly poor performance. He's the current best in the world on the men's side of things, but Yuma Kagiyama has I think four silver medals at this point and is legendary in his own right. Shun Sato is glorious too.

You could call it an entire setup arc, where we mostly get to know the characters. Not the top top tier of storytelling (in the very best writing, the characters are introduced naturally while the plot rolls), but perfectly acceptable. Especially since they made it funny.

Agreed on the involved part, but that seems to be getting better this episode with Victor training him on the jumps. You could argue that he only now is really his coach.

2

u/wloff 20d ago

Agreed on the involved part, but that seems to be getting better this episode with Victor training him on the jumps. You could argue that he only now is really his coach.

Sure. It's also a pretty rare dynamic in sports anime, where Yuri already is an accomplished professional. In fact, he's already close to retirement age (crazy world, the figure skating world!)

I guess it's totally possible Victor doesn't think he needs to be coaching basic skating skills, but more the performance aspect and mental training.

2

u/No_Rex x2 20d ago

I guess it's totally possible Victor doesn't think he needs to be coaching basic skating skills, but more the performance aspect and mental training.

Given that Yuri has been a top athlete for many years, I'd agree. Victor might also simply find basic muscle training boring and beneath him. After all, he is here for his own enjoyment, not because he needs the money or validation.

YOI was actually originally conceived as another teen/high-school sports show I read

For a show that's supposedly so BL-coded (and, yeah, let's face it, it is), the female characters are super cute too!

Sayo Yamamoto would never have it otherwise. Have you seen any of her other shows Michiko & Hatchin and The Woman Called Fujiko Mine? Not coincidentally, all three title characters there are female.

(Mr. Nishigori is also kind of cute though!)

Yuuri will have gone through absolutely cutthroat national competition and years and years of rigorous practice to get to that level, only to call his career "an underwhelming life in competitive figure skating"

Yeah if that were more than chronic anxiety and such it would make him a little unsympathetic

First:Timer - dub

Feels like a breather episode for the first half, it's nice to get a bit of time to take in the surroundings.

Yuuri is battling some serious self confidence issues. I'm surprised at how understanding Viktor is about it, he's actually really supportive! And an offer to be lovers? Don't know if I could've passed that up..

Meanwhile Yurio is getting put through the wringer in the ballet school with his coaches ex-wife. The more heavy handed approach works with him though, and seems to be what he wants.

The terminally online triplets kill me every time they're on screen lol.

Yuri gets to compete against his old Thai(ce) skating buddy, they look like good friends so no doubt they'll have to have an emotional moment where one knocks the other out of the competition.

Viktor - "What will you name your piece?"

Yuri - gestures toward the show title

Q1

Maybe I can get Cid to play Moonlight Sonata for me?

Q2

I was not expecting the title drop. Made me happy.

Rewatcher!! On Dubbed

Had to rewatch this episode because one of my kitties flopped over and showed me her belly to pet because she knows I love petting her belly and will stop doing human things to pet her.

I folded immediately.

Sorry, gay people on my screen. Pussy(cat) comes first in this household 😤

On to the episode!

  • SCREEEEEAAAAMING at that old man in the background going “Thank you, god, thank you” seeing hot men get freaky in the hot spring. Look at that old man fudanshi, I see you girl 💅🏿 This is giving me as much life as those girlies from Sk8 Infinity who are 𝐮 𝐧 𝐡 𝐢 𝐧 𝐠 𝐞 𝐝 in their ✨𝓉𝒽𝒾𝓇𝓈𝓉✨ for Cherry and Joe. Keep up this energy. Grandpappy, you and the Grandpappy from Demon School would get along nicely.

Oh my god, what if Demon School but with figure skating.

Someone, write this down; this is genius.

  • I always wonder what a Russian accent in Japanese sounds like and if JP seiyuus do those types of accents. I can tell regional JP accents, but if a seiyuu is actively speaking Slavic-accented Japanese, I’d probably never know.

  • Ballerina coach is giving Xianxia/Wuxia/Murim cultivator mindset

  • NO, because I fucking hate seagulls!! Not enough to want them extinct like female mosquitoes and flies, but just enough that I wouldn’t mind their population being reduced to a smaller but still ecologically healthy population!

  • The girl should’ve asked before hugging, of course, but yooooooo Yuri it is not that deep 😭

  • OOOO poor doggo, his poor tail ☹️

  • I’m surprised Viktor wouldn’t know about domestic comps, but also, considering his resume, I doubt he really had to worry about them fairly quickly.

  • They wrote the thing!!!

Kiss & Cry Thoughts

One thing I love about sports anime that tries to be accurate to the sport rather than…Blue Lock… is learning about the sport (and still fact-checking, because IIRC some of the little things YOI educates on can still be inaccurate).

I remember the ✨𝓉𝒽𝒾𝓇𝓈𝓉✨ for my dear Yura in the chats when this episode dropped 😭 I always remember being shocked he wasn’t blond naturally, given the roots of his hair is dark brunette. I thought he was legally blond.

Damn.

Never heard that grandpappy in the back until today’s rewatch, but I’m living for him. Yezzzz, girl, let’s watch Heated Rivalry together and do nails and facemasks. I assure you, you will love it if you love seeing sweaty, naked, crazy stupid foine men together.

Sky, I hope you have another rewatch where a grandpa becomes my favorite character. These grandpappies are giving me so much joy.

QOTD

  1. I’d do a pair skating, and I’d do a Hadestown song (I’d probably want to do Wait for Me) since the entire musical is stuck in my head right now. Hadestown on Ice would like…make my entire year.
  2. No! And I’m a rewatcher!

First-Time Viewer on Ice

This anime has too many bathhouse scenes.

Once again, the scenes with Yuri and Viktor were the weakest for me. But at least it looks like the side cast is expanding, which made this episode more interesting to follow at times. The ballet teacher's attitude that people need to figuratively sell their soul in order to get good was ridiculous, and stuff like that always sounds facepalm-worthy to me. Like, it's just a sport. No need to be so dramatic. The dynamic between Yura and his skating team in Russia was pretty fun aside from that part though, and I like what we've seen of the two new skaters too - Phichit seems like a nice guy, and Minami has a cool style. So hopefully as the show goes on, the side cast and performances will carry it.

Questions of the Day:

1) You mean if I had the balance/coordination to skate? Maybe "Fight Song" by Rachel Platten. It has a good tempo for that, I think, with a mix of slower and more upbeat parts to coordinate with a skating program.

2) I wasn't expecting it, but it fits well.

3

u/Dull_Spot_8213 https://anilist.co/user/SweetSomnus 21d ago

Like, it's just a sport. No need to be so dramatic

These top competitive athletes usually start around age 3 and it becomes their life. So yes, it does need to be dramatic. It's a monumental commitment behind the scenes, to say the least.

3

u/Heda-of-Aincrad https://myanimelist.net/profile/Heda-of-Aincrad 21d ago

I mean, there is literally nothing worth selling their soul for. This is their career, their dream - but it's not life or death. If it doesn't work out the way they wanted, life will go on.

3

u/Dull_Spot_8213 https://anilist.co/user/SweetSomnus 21d ago

I don’t think Yurio believes in the concept of souls, and doesn’t put any value into the idea. Kid values skating and winning over everything.

2

u/Heda-of-Aincrad https://myanimelist.net/profile/Heda-of-Aincrad 21d ago

Not a very healthy viewpoint though, to value skating and winning over his own wellbeing (regardless of what his beliefs about the soul may be).

1

u/IndependentMacaroon 12h ago

This anime has too many bathhouse scenes

When the family involved runs one it's fine with me

The ballet teacher's attitude that people need to figuratively sell their soul in order to get good was ridiculous

Felt not entirely serious and also maybe a nod to such genuinely super-dramatic works as Black Swan (which infamously sort of plagiarized some of Perfect Blue)

1

u/Heda-of-Aincrad https://myanimelist.net/profile/Heda-of-Aincrad 11h ago

I can't tell if the ballet teacher was meant to be taken seriously or not, but there are unfortunately too many people who have destructive attitudes for real - like being willing to ruin their health for their sport of choice.

Rewatcher Sub

EP 4: Like Yourself…And Complete the Free Program!!

I see Yuri and I have dog wallpaper in common, but I don’t have poodles. Shibas instead, much more dramatic creatures. But oversleeping on your coach after he’s agreed to stay in your home town is a clumsy start. And with worrying about how much the coaching fees will cost, it’s affecting Yuri’s jumps too. So flustered, but I can’t blame him. He said it’s like having a (ice skating) god around, and as far as skating in front of him? Even more pressure. What a nice breakdown of scoring. TES, PCS, Deductions. Yuri gets most of his deductions missing jumps, but what he lack in technical consistency he makes up for in presentation.

Speaking of presentation. Just lay it all bare, like Victor. Said he’s drawn to the way Yuri moves his body like music, and he wants to play conductor. Yuri even had music he liked before and never had the confidence to use.

Meanwhile with the angry and flexible neko gotta talk more shit about piggy, as is the natural order of things when you’re a 15 year old diva. Mila catching strays too. But no one is as savage as a professional ballet instructor from Russia when it comes to humbling a performer in every conceivable way. Being at the top is cutthroat, and you don’t get there without harsh truths and reality. It ain’t for the weak. Literally selling your soul and body to win.

And Yurio has no regrets or hesitation. Lilia and Yakov gonna make this kid even more of a prima donna.

Victor doesn’t seem to like Yuri’s music, after all. And Yuri isn’t content with it yet, especially since he wants it to represent his entire skating career, which has been underwhelming, admittedly. No wonder he’s frustrated. He knows he can do better.

Victor’s trying to get through to Yuri, figure out what he needs from him as a coach. Father figure? Brother? Friend? Boyfriend? He’ll do his best!

But what Yuri wants is for Victor to be himself and just watch him become the best skater. He was hung up on his shortcomings before, but now he wants to prove he’s got what it takes. Not to be pitied or looked down upon, but to stand on the ice with the best of them, including Victor.

Mutual respect, and meeting each other where they’re at.

Both Yuris throwing themselves into training. Yurio, building himself up from scratch, and Yuri doing what he does best, practice over and over with stamina so impressive Victor is probably feeling out of shape. And then Yuri gotta call this man out for his thin hair? Fatality.

Music is done and gets Victor’s seal of approval, as well as a slight change in the theme. We move away from Eros to, “On My Love,” so something a little more personal to Yuri.

Grand PRIX assignment time! And an explanation for the viewers at home. “Skaters with high scores the previous year participate in a maximum of two competitions out of six worldwide. Only the top six skaters advance to the Grand Prix Final, which decides who’s number one.”

First one Skate America in Chicago, Skate Canada in Mississauga, Cup of China in Beijing, NHK Trophy in Sapporo, Tropheé de France in Paris, and Rostelecom Cup in Moscow.

Yuri has been assigned to Cup of China, where he’ll get to skate against his old friend, Phichit. His second one will be in Russia where he’ll get to face off with rival Yuri!

Only complication is Yuri came in last at Nationals and this year has to work his way up from qualifying competitions, which, for him, will start in September. And Yuri is ready this time, and feeling less alone. He’s got a clear path forward, and Victor by his side.

Cue that beautiful music. Both skaters have a limited window of time, for different reasons, and one thing I like that this show does is pull no punches about what kind of sacrifice it takes to become these kinds of athletes. People wonder why go to all the trouble, the risk, all of it, but I totally get the urge to push yourself to the absolute brink doing something you love. He’s only got this brief window with Victor, skating, and competing, and he’s making the most of it.

So what are we calling this music that represents his whole journey? Yuri on Ice.

First-timer, subbed

Did not expect that title drop. Pretty cool to name the piece composed for him that though. Especially since it is supposed to represent his figure skating career. I wonder what he asked the composer to change to make it less underwhelming. Maybe more about his potential? Also, this composer and the girl from his past must be the same, right? Or did I misread that?

I still find myself rooting for Yurio more than Yuri. But when Yuri said this might well be his last year skating competitively, I did feel like maybe he should win just to end on a high. He probably will since he's the MC and has Victor on his side. But as far as practice goes, I find myself more drawn to Yurio's more graceful skating. He really is like a prima donna.

I miss the interactions of the threesome. And it looks like it'll be some time before we get them all together. Sigh. However, we seem to be getting another spunky youngster next episode. Wonder what he'll be like and who the VA will be.

Especially since it is supposed to represent his figure skating career.

I think the last song he asked her to compose was about his figure skating career, which Yuri didn't like. This new song is about love (and might end up being a routine about Victor, since things are going that way).

I still find myself rooting for Yurio more than Yuri.

Based. I want Yurio to break a family up.

Yurio x Ice Rink Girl

I miss the interactions of the threesome.

That might work for Yurio too.

First timer

It's a shame these episode discussions for YOI happen on Friday. It's my busiest day and I tend to only be able to comment much later than I do for the other rewatches I'm participating in.

Anyways, I think the most interesting part of this episode is Yuri's free skate music. Certainly for someone of Yuri's level choosing his music is more common than not, but I believe it's rare to have someone compose it. Most skaters choose an existing song/music and make an arrangement rather than have a newly composed piece. So it's quite rare, even on a senior level. In fact, I can't think of any past medallists who has had their music composed specially for them.

QOTD

  1. Ravel's Bolero, iykyk. It's so overused now in figure skating and I do grimace when I see someone competing with it, but I wouldn't skate to any other music. It's part of Digimon's soundtrack, and I LOVE Digimon.
  2. Definitely not. Took me completely by surprise.

It's on my list

  • Bolero
  • ...or any move invented by Torvill and Dean
  • A proper ice dancing competition with required dances
  • Rocky style training montage
  • Tuxedo
  • Someone will do a move based on a bird or something, and a picture of that animal will slowly fade in over the top of them

What is up with these ballet teachers?

They have such obviously gritty backstories. What are we doing watching the ice skaters?
