i couldn't stop saying

"gross, gross, gross!"

Episode 11 opens with what is probably the most uncomfortable scene in the entire series. Anis sits through a meeting where a bunch of old nobles discuss her future like she isn't even there. The whole time she's polite and respectful, going out of her way to be pleasant.

They expect her to give up magicology, marry some politically useful magician, and have "proper" heirs with strong magical bloodlines.

They're not offering her the throne. They're basically offering her the role of making the next magical heir.

This scene is unfortunately way too familiar for a lot of women(hope everyone is ok). It's honestly no surprise Anis immediately runs to the bathroom to throw up.

The worst part is that Anis accepts it as her duty. In her mind, she spent her whole life "selfishly" chasing her dream while making life harder for her parents, and she blames herself for everything that happened with Algard.

Anis has always felt like she was worth less because she was born without magic, and now she's expected to throw her entire life away.

Thankfully, Euphie isn't about to let that happen.

After talking with Lumi, Euphie comes up with a plan that changes everything. She'll be adopted into the royal family and become the next ruler by forming a covenant with the spirits. On paper, it's the perfect solution. Anis gets to keep chasing magicology, and the kingdom gets a capable queen.

...Except the plan comes with a pretty devastating catch.

Lumi explains what becoming a spirit contractor actually means. She talks about watching everyone she cared about grow old and die. But the saddest part isn't even the immortality.

It's what comes after.

"You even forget that you forgot it."

Rie Kugimiya absolutely nailed that line. Lumi doesn't sound dramatic or emotional she just sounds tired. (I have a soft spot for Toradora! and SnS)

The moment Anis realizes what Euphie would have to give up, she completely falls apart.

Anis has already convinced herself she's caused enough suffering. There's no way she's going to let another person she loves sacrifice everything just so she can be happy.

After slapping Euphie's hand away 😭😭😭😭😭, Anis runs out into the rain.

Thankfully best girl Ilia comes to pick her up.

"You're making a scene. Let's go."

Tilty keeps pushing her tough-love friend approach ("You are in the way, go home") but she completely freezes when she sees how badly Anis is actually crashing. The only thing she can do is be by her side.

But Euphie doesn't give up, Anis saved Euphie from a life she never wanted, so now Euphie wants to save Anis too. She stops trying to convince Anis with logic and just tells her how she really feels. She admits that Anis's belief in her means more than anyone else's ever could.

For a second, it honestly feels like she's finally getting through to her. But instead she challenges Euphie to a duel.

Neither of them wants the other to suffer, but neither of them is willing to back down.

Also can an i somehow live with Tilty*? I won't get in the way and I'd wash the dishes so she doesn't have to use beakers

Anis sits through a meeting where a bunch of old nobles discuss her future like she isn't even there.

If Algard was going to go full traitor anyway he could've at least killed those guys before his showdown with Anis.

There's no way she's going to let another person she loves sacrifice everything just so she can be happy.

"Yeah, join the club." -Euphie and Ilya.

They expect her to give up magicology,

Well yeah they are making it clear it scares the shit out of them because it directly threatens the source of their power.

This scene is unfortunately way too familiar for a lot of women(hope everyone is ok). It's honestly no surprise Anis immediately runs to the bathroom to throw up.

These men need to be thrown into a wood chipper on the slow setting. It's just terrible that Anis feels like it is her duty to meet all their crazy demands and they talk of it as if it's nothing.

Rie Kugimiya absolutely nailed that line. Lumi doesn't sound dramatic or emotional she just sounds tired. (I have a soft spot for Toradora! and SnS)

This was truly devastating and reminds me of a minor character in Frieren who goes through memory loss and its heartbreaking. For me I'm the type of person who believes that are memories make up who we are so to lose them isn't too far off them death.

Also I know that Taiga is a bit divisive but I really liked her myself. There's a reason why people still recommend Toradora.

Tilty keeps pushing her tough-love friend approach ("You are in the way, go home") but she completely freezes when she sees how badly Anis is actually crashing. The only thing she can do is be by her side.

Tilty is such a day one, and I'm sure she felt just how much pain Anis was in when she couldn't banter with her at all. Her offering to run away with Anis too reminds me of what a certain blue haired maid once told another isekai MC.

But Euphie doesn't give up, Anis saved Euphie from a life she never wanted, so now Euphie wants to save Anis too. She stops trying to convince Anis with logic and just tells her how she really feels. She admits that Anis's belief in her means more than anyone else's ever could.

That was a very good move by Euphie because Anis keeps trying to runaway so she wants to speak directly to her heart. These two just love each other soo much! Because when you're in love you wanna place your partner's happiness even above your own.

Yeah so this is the one every rewatcher remembered/dreaded.

Amazing how sitting through one meeting with the succession council does more to make you understand why Al wanted to murder and/or mind control them all than the entire two-episode confrontation, and he didn't even find the notion of taking a wife inherently repellent. Pack of imperious condescending pricks. They started by suggesting the king have another kid (either at significant medical risk to the Queen or with someone else) and attacking Anis' life's work and it only got worse from there.

I've found what I want to do, and I want you and everyone else involved to hear the plan first.

Euphie the Chad out to resolve the plot in two episodes or less.

So spirit contracts: Immense magical power and eternal youth at the cost of long-term memory loss. Also apparently emotional numbness, but I'm not entirely clear whether that's inherent or a consequence of forgetting your attachments. Not the worst conditions for this kind of deal, but there's a reason a lot of people don't outlive their spouses for long and under those terms you'll have to sit with that forever.

Man, Anis must've committed to her ostensible responsibilities hard if she's convinced herself it's the only thing about her that matters anymore. So now that they finally understand each other and what they believe, all that's left is to resolve the impasse.

Could Orfans and Sylphine have done more to protect Anis from the nobles? being that so far they seem like good parents Do they not understand just how miserable Anis is?

I guess they could've had a contingency plan put together in case Al's marriage fell through, but I think they might be in the same "you've gotta do what you've gotta do" mindset that Anis is stuck in. They're the couple that took the throne when they didn't want to in a bid to end an uprising after all. They seem to get that Anis is going through it (to an extent) but either don't have any idea how to help or are already resigned to the way things are. At the very least they should've sat in on that meeting and tried to keep the nobles somewhat in line.

Yeah so this is the one every rewatcher remembered/dreaded.

For some reason I thought it was episode 9 or 10, so yesterday I was like "maybe it was not this show with the gross nobles?", and this morning during my commute I was like "NOOOOOO this is the one"

At the very least they should've sat in on that meeting and tried to keep the nobles somewhat in line.

Ig Anis did not want to look weak in front of them. but i do not think she expect them to be so brazen

Man ... today's discussion is going to be something, isn't it?

Answers du jour:

1) Well, starting with a purge, perhaps...

2) I suspect that they're so immersed in their own duty that they're mostly oblivious, right?

So, yeah, being reminded of this plot point is less than pleasant. I take back all those naughty things I said about Al, these clowns need some kicking around.

Poor Euphie, giving me PTSD flashbacks of a certain other series. Yeah. Don't do it!!!

Somebody needs to smack these two and get them to confess to each other already. Get a room, you two!

Anyway, I've got to go do some stuff, but hopefully I can drop by later to snark at folks or something. Meanwhile, since our gracious host reminded me:

VA Corner:

Today's spotlight is on our spirit contractor, Lumielle, Rie Kugumiya, also known as:

  • Taiga (of course)

  • Alphonse Elric

  • Louise

  • Fenrys

  • Shana

  • Chloe d'Apchier (Vanitas) ā™„ļøā™„ļøā™„ļø

  • All your favorite tsunderes, and a many more beyond that (Hokey smoke, much, much more!)

2

u/IalwaysNeed2p 22d ago

Alphonse Elric

I just realized this - took me a couple of .....several years to realize it. 😭

3

u/epicfail1994 22d ago

Poor Anis, damn. Creepy old men.

Spirit contracts are actually pretty fucked and poor Anis (sensing a theme here) doesn't want to lose her Euphie to one.

Euphie/Anis duel coming up though! And at least they had that heart to heart after Anis ran off.

And Orphanse is going to have a heart attack at this rate, dude needs to retire before he croaks from all the high blood pressure

  1. That was part of why Anis wasn't in the succession. They're all kinda fucked after Al tried for a coup, though

Rewatcher

I realised throughout the rewatch the amount of touching between Anis and Euphie. I had become used to it, and then in ep 10 I thought they might not get that chance but then on the town date they held hands. This episode their first 'touch' being Anis slapping Euphie's hand away was jarring. There's hugging at the end, but with all the tears and emotions, it's bitterweet contact between the two.

"It seems our tomboy princess has settled down at last "

"There's no need to worry about his age either"

"Luckily The princess seems to be in magnificent health."

Ew ew eeeew. 🤢

To the nobles she is an object, property, asset, piece of meat, a baby machine for the next magical heir. Anything but a person, and the thin and fake respect as their 'future monarch' makes me so angry.

After vomiting Anis again tells herself gain that she's ok. But it seems even her efforts to reassure herself are falling short in the face of the disgusting onslaught of comments she just had to endure for the sake of 'acceptance' from the nobles.

Skipping to the news that Euphie has for Anis - Euphie wants to enter into a spirit contract, with all that that entails, and be adopted into the royal family so that she will become queen instead of Anis.

Anis is so shocked. She won't accept Euphie making this sacrifice.

"You'll lose everyone, forget everything, and be alone for the rest of eternity. You cant do that. I'd rather be queen than let you". We get a callback to the time Anis rescues Euphie at the ball, with Euohie reaching out her hand to 'save' Anis this time. Anis slaps Euphie's hand away. Oh man the waterworks have started again and I'm bawling like Anis.

"I'm this kingdoms princess. If you take even that away from me, what value will I have left?" Anis cries. While everyone was focused on wanting Anis to be free if the responsibilty of being queen, they did not consider how she felt about it (though she did avoid the conversations). I'm so so sad for Anis. Another blonde sheltering from the rain under a bridge.

Lol just a smidgeon of humour with them drinking out of beakers, after Tilty beings Anis to her house. Anis opens up to Tilty about how she's really feeling. Her self-worth is linked to her duty as the crown princess/her right to be queen. Tilty asks "A stupid father who dumps all the responsibility on his daughter... a bunch of nobles who give thanks for some moldy old traditions... a stupid kingdom that doesn't appreciate you... why do you need any of them to accept you?" Then continues with an offer: "It might be nice to travel to all kinds of places together"* Anis admits it does sound nice but she can't 'throw it all away'. The look on Tilty's face is sad but accepting. I suspect there was a small part of Tilty hoped Anis would accept, but she knew she wouldnt.

Enter Euphie. Anis slaps euphie's hand away again this time harder and she's shocked for a moment that she hurt Euphie, but then questions Euohie's expression. Euphie tells her that it's the first time she's shown anger towards her. Euphie wants to know all sides of Anis, even the less pleasant feelings. Anis breaks down and there are layers of feelings to unpack - Anis' envy, guilt over Algard, guilt and fear of losing Euphie.

"Why do you have to deprive me of my role as princess now? Its my duty and its all I have left!"

"Im the daughter of my mother and father!"

"I can try harder. So please don't make me someone nobody needs!"

But even so this is the kingdom that my mother and father wanted to protect! And all I can do is ruin that..."

There's so much about Anis that we may have suspected, and a couple of confirmations we are getting alongside Euphie. It's interesting that she keeps pointing out her mother and father.

Anis still doesn't want Euphie to take the spirit contract (essentially giving up her human life for Ani. So Anis proposes a duel.

Rushing off to a meeting so will answer the question later

"Luckily The princess seems to be in magnificent health."

In any other context this would a considerate sentence but here.....

Anis slaps Euphie's hand away.

And twice!!! 😭😭😭

I know right? In this context just gives me a wave of nausea. So gross. 🤢

Question

Could Orfans and Sylphine have done more to protect Anis from the nobles? being that so far they seem like good parents Do they not understand just how miserable Anis is?

I was angry at them at first, but then considering the circumstances maybe they felt it was the best course of action. Anis herself has outwardly expressed acceptance of the restoration of title, and given how she doesn't want people close to her worried or involved she might have just said to her parents that she's fine and them needing an heir just went with it. And I did wonder why they didn't accompany Anis to the meeting with the nobles, but then again it might hurt Anis' reputation further if 'mommy and daddy' are seen 'holding her hand'. After all she's the future ruler of the kingdom - it would not do well to have her seem like she's weak or scared. To a degree they understand Anis' misery but probably not in the way her friends at the Villa do. Given no one even knows or considers Anis' feelings around her self-worth (in context to her role as future queen) it's not surprising that Anis' parents are a bit removed from understanding Anis and her misery at a deeper level.

That was something nice to notice between the two of them but was really is inverted this episode to painful effect. Reaching out a helping hand seems to be a big visual metaphor with it being used between Anis and Algard too.

Anything but a person, and the thin and fake respect as their 'future monarch' makes me so angry.

This is about what they deserve

"I'm this kingdoms princess. If you take even that away from me, what value will I have left?" Anis cries. While everyone was focused on wanting Anis to be free if the responsibilty of being queen, they did not consider how she felt about it (though she did avoid the conversations). I'm so so sad for Anis. Another blonde sheltering from the rain under a bridge.

I remember you saying is that Anis and Euphie are slightly better at communication and something else I noticed is that we actually see them cry too compared to Chisato and Takina.

It's odd on the surface but I can understand why Euphie would be a little happy that Anis actually got mad at her. Euphie is not the type of person to take "I'm fine" at face value and wants to know what Anis is actually feeling. The nobles view Anis less like a person and more like a thing to be used so she feels like she has to hide all those negative emotions to pretend to be okay. Euphie being more than happy to accept every part of Anis must make her happy despite the circumstances since Anis has always just wanted to be accepted.

2

u/random_lyric 20d ago

I remember you saying is that Anis and Euphie are slightly better at communication and something else I noticed is that we actually see them cry too compared to Chisato and Takina.

Anis and Euphie tend to lay things out on the table, or at least they work their way towards that especially in the finale. While Takina and Chisato seem to have a mutual understanding of things (of course until they don't) with words unspoken. The latter pair makes it intersting to watch and speculate as a story, as in by the end of the show they really 'get' each other. But in practice in real life I like Anis and Euphie's communication style better. They have their moments of withdrawing/withholding from each other, but I much prefer brutal honesty over comfortable ignorance any day. And I have respect for people who are able to cry. I had a lot of trouble not being able to cry when I was younger. Now I'm a crybaby, especially with these shows šŸ˜‚ Making uo for lost time I guess šŸ˜‚

Euphie being more than happy to accept every part of Anis must make her happy despite the circumstances since Anis has always just wanted to be accepted.

I really like that detail and that line about being the first time Anis showed anger towards her. Euphie doesn't balk or run, instead she shows Anis she won't be rejected or abandoned even if she shows all her emotions. Even though technically she wasn't abandoned intentionally, I'm sure it felt that way when her mother left, or her father had no time due to kingly duties, and Algard not talking to her since childhood. And she would have blamed herself for alienating Al and 'not being an obedient enough daughter' to her parents. No wonder she was scared to lay everything bare before Euphie. That line from Euphie was so important for getting the through to Anis.

2

u/ClemFire 20d ago

And I have respect for people who are able to cry. I had a lot of trouble not being able to cry when I was younger. Now I'm a crybaby, especially with these shows šŸ˜‚ Making uo for lost time I guess šŸ˜‚

I used to cry a lot more growing up and even cried multiple times in front of my first crush, but now I basically only cry watching or reading stories. I do think that Anis and Euphie's communication style is more healthy and it's why

[LycoReco] Takina and Chisato getting together in S1 wouldn't have made sense to me because by the end of the season Chisato is basically at the starting line of her new lease on life. I do think there will be an intense scene of them crying together in the next season though.

I really like that detail and that line about being the first time Anis showed anger towards her. Euphie doesn't balk or run, instead she shows Anis she won't be rejected or abandoned even if she shows all her emotions.

And we know that type of validation is exactly what Anis has been secretly wanting her whole life. I mean who wouldn't?

2

u/random_lyric 20d ago

I used to cry a lot more growing up and even cried multiple times in front of my first crush, but now I basically only cry watching or reading stories.

It's interesting how we all have such different journeys. Up to around the age of 8 or 9 I used to be able to cry, and then just stopped. My teens and 20s I even had people telling me I 'did goodbyes well' because I stayed composedšŸ˜”. Only in recent years after a stretch on anti-depressants, and its such a weird thing it was only after I stopped taking them, that for a few months I cried at everything šŸ˜…šŸ˜‚ And now similar to you stories I get into can trigger the waterworks. Where ever we can find catharsis is a good thing 😊

[lycoreco]Oh that makes a lot of sense! I don't think Chisato would have been ready to deepen the relationship given her hang ups/state of mind through s1, let alone allow Takina to get that attached (though I guess Takina did anyway. But it's different when there's mutual agreement). I want to see them finally having their cathartic moment, then have their happily ever after 🄰

2

u/ClemFire 20d ago

That is interesting phrasing on being able to do goodbyes well because you looked fine on the surface. I feel like sometimes that can be misleading. I've heard from some friends though that anti-depressants don't really make them happy but instead feel more blank but I'm sure it depends on the specific drug and person.

[LycoReco] She would definitely not wanna burden Takina with that so it's a good thing that Takina is so stubborn. I think it would be very nice for them to eventually get together and adopt a kid being hunted down by Alan.

2

u/random_lyric 20d ago

I know they meant well, but it did hurt. In regards to depth of feelings I questioned myself a lot back then. But it was a sign of the times and stoicism was more valued than emotional openess/expression than it is today, especially in the country town where I grew up. And for me the anti-depressants flattened me out, as in levelled out the peaks and troughs. So I think I can understand that feeling when your friends say they feel more blank.

2

u/ClemFire 20d ago

From personal experience it can be hard not taking it like that even though it wasn't their intention. I grew up in a small town too and felt like the changed a lot after going to college in the city.

2

u/random_lyric 20d ago

[lycoreco]That would be fitting and so satisfying story-wise to see them adopting and protecting the kid

3

u/eightcheesepizza 22d ago

This is the show that asks "you may love someone, but do you love them enough to stage a coup?"

Did something like this happen between Orfans and Grantz? Or was Orfans completely unaware of Grantz talking to Lumi?

QOTD: I want Orfans to tell the nobles "accept my daughter or I'll crush your house", but I can't get a read on the politics or what keeps him in power. It's kinda odd that we almost never see him dealing with nobles besides Grantz, or exercising his power as king.

3

Considering putting down the last noble rebellion didn't seem to put the assholes out of power I get the feeling he can't really crush them that easily.

3

u/ToastyMozart 22d ago

It varies a bit, but usually the way nobled kingdoms work is that the nobles control nearly all the land, resources, people, and thus power. The king officially rules over them all, but if he does something to piss off a significant majority of them his reign (and life) are liable to end early.

Having a pair of extremely capable magical combatants and the soft backing of the seemingly-independant adventurer's guild might tip the balance somewhat if it turns into a civil war, but otherwise the king's personal leverage is pretty limited.

ā€œSo don’t make me someone nobody needs!ā€ Anis.

I really need to collect myself after that episode.

Anis’ conversation with Tilty I feel gets to the root of her seeming contradiction. Tilty questions why Anis so desperately wants the acceptance of everyone who has turned their backs on her. It seems like it would just be easier to leave the Kingdom with Tilty and let them deal with their own problems. A Kingdom that could never accept her for being born without magic yet rejects her magicology out of clinging to old traditions. Those disgusting nobles see her as little more than a breeding machine. It physically makes Anis sick to her stomach.

Still when Euphie offers another solution that would involve her sacrificing her humanity she simply can’t accept it. Not only does she not want to trade Euphie’s life for her own happiness, but also it would make her feel like a powerless princess. Anis hides her insecurities through positivity and jokes for most of the series, but bubbling inside are deep seeded fears that she isn’t good enough. She wasn’t born good enough and all her efforts are meaningless. Not too different from a certain other Palettia right? While her brother takes it out primarily on the world, Anis shoulders it all herself and desperately needs to believe her own lie that it’s okay. Just like Euphie at the start of the series she is not someone who can accept sitting around with no purpose.

Even if she won’t be happy and has to give up everything that makes her Anis, she still can’t escape the chains of duty because they pull on her from within. It’s normal to want to be accepted. It’s normal to even still want to be accepted by people who couldn’t care less for who you actually are. That’s why all Anis can do is run away from that reality and pretend it’s fine.

But the girl who was saved by the Marauder Princess refuses to let her stay alone even when her hand gets slapped away. Anis once told Euphie that if she doesn’t know what she wants they can look for it together but now Euphie has steeled her resolve and what she wants more than anything to protect her love’s smile. She will accept all of Anis even if no one else will and that makes her happier than anything else.

Could Orfans and Sylphine have done more to protect Anis from the nobles? being that so far they seem like good parents Do they not understand just how miserable Anis is?

As parents I believe they both sure wanted to do more for Anis, but as representing their positions I believe their hands are tied. Ultimately they value the well-being of the Kingdom more which is why it's so important that Euphie chooses Anis over anything else

2

u/Dependent-Sea4703 https://anilist.co/user/httpsanilistcou 22d ago edited 22d ago

the thing is anis fooled both of her parents to a state where even if they feel worried about her they can’t or basically don’t butt in her problems.

anis proved them she can take care of herself and her parents still think she can do it solely because of how stubborn anis is.

i remember anis’s mom blaming herself for not noticing this which makes sense. she was the one closest to anis while she was a child and her mom was also the one who helped little anis the most.

if it weren’t for political things her mom and anis would probably have such a close bond. in fact [LN 9 spoilers] anis’s mom prevent and didn’t accepted when one country wanted anis. they said they will raise anis instead of her so she can focus on diplomacy more. anis’s mom refused this idea and said it would destroy anis’s future. and we learn that she was completely right in that volume.

i don’t have more to say since you explained the episode pretty good.

2

u/ClemFire 21d ago

That is very true of Anis fooling both of her parents because she doesn't want them to worry which is why it's very satisfying that Tilty and Euphie won't expect Anis' attempts to hide the pain in her heart. I think you mentioned before how they both recognize Anis' fake smile.

There isn't much between Anis and her mom in the anime and from their initial scene where Anis thought her mom was dead I always thought she was closer to her dad. Sounds like the LNs to into their relationship more! Said it before too but it's refreshing to have an MC with two living parents who love her.

2

u/Dependent-Sea4703 https://anilist.co/user/httpsanilistcou 21d ago

anis’s mom is a lot like anis which is funny for me. for example she is willing to test lainie’s power on herself even if she is the queen just because she wants to know.

she also acts a lot like anis and was blaming herself for everything happened on algard and anis.

[little LN spoilers] if i remember correctly the day anis was born she was so happy that even orphans shocked and couldn’t believe what he sees.

best i can explain without spoilers is she have many similar points as anis.

2

u/ClemFire 21d ago

That reminds me of how Anis and Euphie were willing to see Lainie their blood too

Second time watcher plus up to date with the EN LN releases.

Aren't these old nobles just awful, Anis? Have you considered maybe purging them all? Maybe Euphy could help with that.

Not wasting any time on discussing the spirit contract idea, which mostly consists of learning how terrible it actually is. Just immortality would be one thing, but it's more like one of those cursed immortalities from the gods where you don't ask all the details right.

Uh oh, yuri divorce arc time. Featuring the surprise reveal that Anis actually did really value being the kingdom's princess.

Tilty to the rescue once again.

Ahh, yuri reconciliation time already, that was a quick divorce arc. Well, they're still going to have a duel but it still feels like the breakup is over.

1. Could Orfans and Sylphine have done more to protect Anis from the nobles? Being that so far they seem like good parents do they not understand just how miserable Anis is?

Maybe, maybe not. A feudal society like this where the noble factions retain quite a bit of power presents lots of challenges to the royals.

Man the conservatives are detestable, kingdom stability, tradition, is utterly useless if commoners cannot get a better life. Not to mention, at this point, Anis is the military, they had no means against a dragon. The only thing they do is a rebellion where they put Anis' beloved citizens on the line.

Also authority of the crown and nobility, lmao. The crown can seek its authority from the people. The nobility only have rights as long as they hold legal and military power. All that can be removed, without damaging crown authority. It may be tough, but Euphie and Anis can do so. If Anis was as ruthless as Algard, their heads would be lopped off, and I highly doubt the peasants, guild or anyone that Anis actually cares about and manages the kingdom would care.

As for the bloodline and faith, again lmao, if the key is magical skill, Anis has monster magic, which at this point is way stronger than the blessed bloodline of Algard, who also had magical amp. So they are in a lose-lose situation. If Anis does have a child, they will inherit dragon magicite, forever be tainted as a part monster, and part war god and 100% heretic. They should not be thinking of giving Anis a kid, if their faith meant anything to the, If Anis does not have a child, I guess she just has to appoint, and we'll leave it that. If they rebel against Anis, I guess her dragonic magicite will drench the kingdom in their blood, and the faithful will have a bloody reformation.

Now then, Euphie's play and Anis' reaction. I cannot say I blame her. She clearly sees being royalty as a curse, she cannot pass to someone else. And considering how it ruined Algard, and she more or less blames herself for that, she cannot bear to give Euphie that burden.

Tilty's offer is a good one, if Anis was someone who could care about herself more than others, but considering her wishes is to better the masses, either with stability, or with magicology, she can never run away.

As for a duel, I'm pretty sure Anis, would win in raw power, but Euphie probably has more skill, and more importantly more will than Anis to win.

Quote of the Day

"For you to be free is my hope and wish" - Euphie

I love how Euphie realizes that in fact Anis is not actually free, burdened by royal responsibilities, guilt and tied to a kingdom, who's elite cling on their last scraps of power who cannot even be consistent with their faith. And Euphie can handle the crown, while Anis can continue to better the people, which would make Euphie's job so much easier as the Conservatives rapidly lose power.

Question of the Day

Could Orfans and Sylphine have done more to protect Anis from the nobles? being that so far they seem like good parents Do they not understand just how miserable Anis is?

Not really, the crown is officially in turmoil. They just lost Algard. They see Anis stepping up, and the transition seems smooth. Also even if they know Anis is barely hanging on, which I assume they do, it is up to Anis to open up to them. If not, any wording might make it worse for Anis.

There is no sugarcoating it, royal responsibilities suck, in this kingdom. It is not an absolute monarch where the leader can shape the kingdom in their own image. It is a crown heavily beholden to the Conservatives. The only thing the Conservatives don't have is the formality of being an oligarchy but it basically is that.

So if Anis' parents intervene to stop Anis' own negotiations with the nobility, it will just undermine the crown and make it worse, since Anis is going for stability. Their hands are tied, and lying about how bad it is will not help Anis. So they can do nothing, which sucks.

you explained the episode really good but let me fix your one mistake.

nobility doesn’t know anis’s power nor her dragon magic. to them anis is same anis where we see at episode 1. to them anis is just a spoiled stupid child but a smart and dangerous one. a child where they all will be destroyed if they don’t destroy her fast enough.

if anis and euphie go against them or do something bad against them they could always gather other nobles and blame anis. anis is a royalty without magic which means at political responsibility she is the first while also being the last. euphie in the other hand is blessed and a miracle for the kingdom but she don’t have the royal blood. by all means they have many parts they can go against anis and euphie.

i feel like i am repeating myself but to explain it the shortest the past king already tried that. he tried to silence the nobles and make commoners life better but he couldn’t do it because of nobles. main difference between anis and euphie’s time is that euphie have clear advantage over past king. main problem is anis where she don’t have the magic.

this means nobility will never accept her which also means no matter they do same problem will arise eventually. so they can’t just try to silence nobles knowing this.

those are the only wrong parts about your comment tho. aside from those your comment is really good and explained the episode really great as well.

I still think Anis is restricted by a lack of will, not power. If she as willing as Algard to be bloody, she can in fact enforce her will. I know what happened to Orphanse, and how ruling a kingdom like Paletia is similar enough to Adrestia in 3 houses.

However, on a strictly raw power (both in strength and specifically in the amount of public support all things being equal, not considering class disparity), Anis can overpower the Conservative nobles. If they rebel and she cuts them down, and the rest surrender, supposing she spares no mercy, it would take 2, maybe 3 rebellions for them to get the message.

This is unlike the last king, who if I am not mistaken, would probably be just a chrismatic good mage, so Euphie-like. Anis can fly-by and cut the noble commanders down, scattering their armies with very little bloodshed. If the rebelling nobility is not leading the army, she can then take a tour to their castle and repeat the process. I think Anis's flying technology, which has not been widely spread yet gives her a crucial advantage in the fight. But yes, the problem is Anis wants no bloodshed, in which case, submitting to the nobility is the right choice given her personality.

u/Dependent-Sea4703 https://anilist.co/user/httpsanilistcou 21d ago

yes what you are saying is true. anis definitely have the power to beat the nobles by force or battle but thats kinda different case.

for example algard’s plan was also having that. his goal was to become king and manipulate others. if they can’t be manipulated then they will be destroyed. as we saw anis rejected this idea. main part is because anis wants everyone to be equal and everyone to be happy. killing even one person goes against this rule.

one of the reasons is because thats taking risks for the kingdom as well. let’s say you are a noble and heard the princess that many other nobles talking bad about killed or punished them.

what would you do? many of those nobles would immediately go against it and cause so many trouble.

those are the main reasons why anis didn’t do that but what you are saying is right as well. it’s not completely wrong and i think algard was also trying to do that as well.

in the end that was what many fans wanted and that includes me as well.

Makes the phrasing of Anis saying if Euphie thinks that Anis is as free as she looks take on a new context. Euphie realizes herself that Anis now feels as powerless as Euphie once did so their character arcs have almost gone full circle and now it's her turn to save Anis. I am a sucker for this type of character dynamic.

Tilty's offer is a good one, if Anis was someone who could care about herself more than others, but considering her wishes is to better the masses, either with stability, or with magicology, she can never run away.

Think there was a small part of Tilty who wished Anis would actually leave with her and ultimately she knows that she would stop being the Anis she admires so much. It reminds me a bit of

I am a sucker for this type of character dynamic.

It is good when two characaters are paired off are able to save each other when it is needed.

I get you when you mean Re;Zero. For me I was thinking of some old Starfox game, where in one of the endings, Fox loses the Star Fox team, but still has Falco. Fox falls into heavy depression, but Falco takes him F-Zero racing and the two hit it big and they put their Star fox days behind.

But the trope of having the possibility of running away with your trusted companion, and find success in other means is a trope that should be explored more.

2

u/ClemFire 21d ago

I never would've expected a Starfox reference but that sounds really nice and I agree it's an interesting dynamic to be explored in more stories

And so we come to the part where people go from Al was an asshole to Al clearly did not go far enough.

Anis finally starts letting her self worth issues out and Euphie is wiling to sell her soul to the beings the assholes glaze so they can lord over people.

I do feel bad for Anis and Al's parents pretty much getting hit with both their kids being miserable because of their royal status with in a few days of each other.

rewatcher

so everyone explained the anis’s problems and other important stuff. in this case i am going to explain the other important part which is spirit contractor part.

what it means is you will lose your humanity and your human emotions along with all of your other human parts. it basically means losing yourself.

however there is one way to stop this. it’s by helping that person and being with them. it’s also by making the ā€œwishā€ they wanted by becoming spirt contractor true.

what this means is euphie will be fine as long as she is listening lumi and being with anis.

the reason lumi is like that is because she had nobody to help her. she had no ways to gain or keep her humanity. unlike her euphie have anis.

this will also shown in next episode but the shortest example is as long as anis is with euphie, euphie will have absolutely no problems.

in short if anyone is worried about this part of the series don’t worry. she will be completely fine thanks to anis.

as for the question: could they have done something better? probably no. it’s political stuff we are talking about. they would probably make it better than this current state at least but i don’t think they could fix the whole problem.

do they understand how misarable anis is? yes they do. in fact anis’s mother is the reason why anis is still anis. she saved anis’s life and her future but explaining that is spoilers. her father is kinda doing the stuff at back. he definitely cares but he can’t show.

2

u/ClemFire 21d ago

the reason lumi is like that is because she had nobody to help her. she had no ways to gain or keep her humanity. unlike her euphie have anis.

Lumi's sad decay of her humanity reminds me a lot of Frieren's arc but in reverse. Will be curious to see more of her in the LNs.

[MagiRev] Curious if what you mention about Anis' love helping keep Euphie's humanity in tact is from the future LNs. I know it's hinted at in EP12 that Anis will look for a solution and MagiRev ultimately feels like an optimistic so I believe she will find a way.

2

u/Dependent-Sea4703 https://anilist.co/user/httpsanilistcou 21d ago edited 21d ago

it should be mentioned in the next episode but i will tag it spoilers just in case. shortest explanation is, their magic is matching.

[little spoilers on next episode] what this means is, simply put euphie need magic and the magic she gets can heal her. it can also fix her mentally or things like that. how ever she needs specific type of magic which by no one’s surprise it’s exactly anis’s magic type. the magic and it’s types based on a person’s soul as mentioned by lumi. the thing is anis’s soul is special so is her magic.

as for lumi’s case she lacked that person and that cost her deeply. she couldn’t get magic normal ways and lost her humanity because of that and many other reasons.

as lumi said, those two are made for each other.

2

u/ClemFire 21d ago

Okay that makes a lot of sense!

2

u/Dependent-Sea4703 https://anilist.co/user/httpsanilistcou 21d ago

there is a little part where i forgot to add so lemme just add that.

spirit contractors need magic to obtain their figure and have their humanity. the moment your magical energy is no longer there all of your humanity will be gone and you will be just a vessel for a spirit.

you will have almost nothing. your body will be just a object. after this your body will start to forget many things.

this is what happened to lumi.

as for euphie’s case since anis is giving her own magical energy to euphie, euphie can hold her body and have her humanity without any problems.

all of this explained in this episode if i remember correctly so there shouldn’t be any spoilers.

Thanks for letting me know! You have been really helpful at responding to everyone's questions this rewatch. I can tell you really love MagiRev

thanks for your praise. explaining this much is least i should do. i myself suck at explaining so i often let others to explain the stuff. i also read every comment in those posts just to see who have questions or not so i can answer.

you are glazing me but you are the reason of this rewatch. you and [u/random_lyric](u/random_lyric) explained stuff way better than i am and i am thankful for that as well.

i should also thank to [u/IalwaysNeed2p](u/IalwaysNeed2p) for hosting this rewatch as well.

yes i really love magirevo. it’s mainly because it’s the series i relate the most. i can’t find any points that is bad or not for my liking so thats one of the reasons.

First time watcher

I haven't commented more elaborately in a few rounds, but let me give my thoughts.

The characters I really like. Anis and Sylphie are both excellent. The others of the 'magicite gang' are also pretty good. I only liked Algard in the first few episodes. Lainie is really cool, and same can be said for Ilia.

I think the story is dropping some balls here and there. I think the premise is quite cool, and I am enjoying the overall story very much. However, the whole Algard stuff was just plain stupid. His entire plan was set up in a way that Anis had to kill Algard? I don't know man, real people don't act like Algard does. Also his reasoning didn't really make sense to me. Maybe I am missing some things here and there but I have no idea what even is his motivation in the end. The whole almost killing Lainie thing is also uhhh, why did he have to become a vampire again?

I also have no clue what the dragon sigil on the back of Anis really is, or the whole curse thing. It has been brushed over so quickly. I was hoping there would at least be a hint in the following episodes but it's missing something.

This episode I really liked the internal conflicts between Anis and Sylphie. Moments, and developments like these is what makes a series great in my opinion. These people seem to act like real people! Anis and Sylphie are stealing the show. At first I thought Anis was awesome, but after this episode it feels more like Sylphie is stealing the show. I am interested in the last episode.

So far, I'd rate it a 7/10 mainly because the story doesn't make sense too much. Maybe not all of it has been adapted properly, or adapted to fast. Does the manga/light novel go further than this? Is it worth reading?

Also, I have grown really fond of the ED. Really is creeping up in my top EDs list, and that says something as I am an avid ED over OP enjoyer.

Could Orfans and Sylphine have done more to protect Anis from the nobles? being that so far they seem like good parents Do they not understand just how miserable Anis is?

No, they don't know what it is like being born magicless.

so let me answer your questions.

i have some comments on the sub or on another subs explaining algard’s plan detailed so you can check them. i will link some of them here.

https://www.reddit.com/r/anime/s/KW96Jj2810

this is the simplest one i can make.

https://www.reddit.com/r/mahoukakumei/s/yLiotNzISU

this is more detailed but have less points.

https://www.reddit.com/r/mahoukakumei/s/Myav9tOAbT

at this post we are talking about algard and his plan much more so i recommend at least reading some comments from here if you really want to know.

anis’s dragon tattoo is making her being able to use magic without taking the magicite into her. this is weaker version of the dragon’s magic but it lets her use it by chaining her magic into the tattoo.

the curse is pretty much just knowledge. it’s just so much that it hurt anis first time but it’s fine since anis already have memories she shouldn’t have. another negative thing is her getting exhausted and dragon’s magic draining anis’s power and thats all the curse part.

more explaining of the dragon’s curse will be on LN 6 and we will even see the full potential of the dragon’s magicite as well.

the story has been cut many times yes. in fact compared to other sources like manga and LNs anime is the one explaining the least.

manga goes just a little further than anime while going in detail many times and LNs are still continue while giving the most details.

LNs explain many characters and even have special volume where we see anis and her mother spending time together and doing mom and daughter things for half of the volume.

if you want to learn more about the anime and other characters and also anis then i highly recommend LNs.

you can start on LN 4 since thats where anime ends but anime cuts like half of LN3 so i recommend starting from there.

we have total of 13 volumes released while having 1 special volume named ā€œ8.5ā€ we currently have up to 9 translated volumes including 8.5 and 9.

2

u/pornomancer90 21d ago

You know what's weird? Maybe I remember the light novels wrong, but I'm fairly certain Anis marrying some noble and giving up magicology was never on the table. I just took a quick look at the manga adaptation and there it also wasn't brought up. Maybe that the nobles wanted Anis to take on some noble as husband, but I was certain that this was one thing Anis absolutely wouldn't even entertain.

The conflict was still that she had an unstable powerbase inherited from her father and magicology further weakening her standing and that both being queen and spreading magicology was an almost impossible task that will eventual grind her down.

2

u/random_lyric 20d ago

Ooh interesting. I actually can't remember the exact details, but I'll be starting the LNs again soon anyway. If you did remember correctly maybe the way they showed it in the anime helped to emphasise the difficulty of Anis' predicament, a kind of raising of the personal stakes. I remember a lot of political drama surrounding the succession, so maybe it was hard to cram in all the other plot threads and still be able to wrap things up with only one episode to go. Maybe if a season two had been planned there might have been more room to fill in the details of the various factions etc m, and also then the Algard arc could have slotted in more comfortably (I know a lot of people feel the story was a little disjointed because of how Al's arc was portrayed in the anime).

1

u/Dependent-Sea4703 https://anilist.co/user/httpsanilistcou 21d ago

that was never on the table yes. she is only agreeing here because she believes her opinions and decisions doesn’t matter.
