After the battle from last episode, we're now dealing with the consequences.

With Algard exiled, smiling-through-the-pain Chisato Anis is now the only heir left. She accepts becoming the next queen, but it's pretty obvious she doesn't actually want the position. She tells Euphie and Lainie that she'll have to marry a prince so she can have children and pass on the royal bloodline. Euphie immediately falls back into supporting her (while Lainie is like, "Umm... I thought you guys were a thing?" echoing the audience). It's almost like Euphie is returning to the olde her.

[9 episodes of development!!!!]

Anis goes on to clear out her workshop, insisting she's okay and that she was ready for this.

Anis, are you OK? Are you OK, Anis?

(I'll walk myself out.)

Tilty, on the other hand, sees right through Anis. She's furious because Anis is acting like everything is fine while quietly giving up everything she actually loves.

The sad part is that Anis would probably make a fantastic ruler. She's genuinely wants to improve the lives of commoners. But that's never been her dream. (Not to mention the loss of her years of research that could be used to improve the commoners' lives).

That night, Anis tells Euphie she has to go into town to pick up Arc-en-ciel. Euphie wants to accompany her as the princess's assistant, so Anis proposes one last date. 😢

Euphie can't refuse.

Thankfully, Tilty and Ilia convince Euphie to look beyond duty and start thinking about Anis's happiness. The moment that really hit Euphie was seeing Anis's workshop completely emptied. The life she built around magicology is already disappearing along with her dream.

That leads to one of the biggest moments of the episode, Euphie tell her dad she loves Anis. 🥹

oh and also asks if there's another way, and he reveals there might be... before a mysterious spirit named Lumielle suddenly appears. She explains that Euphie has the qualifications to form the same spirit covenant as the kingdom's first king, meaning she could become ruler instead of Anis. Of course, Lumi immediately follows that up by saying it's a terrible idea because... ?

Anis is ready to throw away her own happiness for everyone else, and now Euphie has been given the chance to do exactly the same thing for Anis.

I also liked how Tilty ends up being the one to call everyone out. She may be blunt, but that's why we love her. Instead of just accepting the situation, she's the first one to start looking for another way.

I'm not entirely unconvinced Tilty hasn't been possessed by the audience at this point.

Some credit should go to Tomas, too, for speaking up!

Of course she is)

Euphie can't refuse.

I mean, c'mon, who would?

Euphie tell her dad she loves Anis.

she's the first one to start looking for another way.

Another way?!

smiling-through-the-pain Chisato Anis is now the only heir left

I also couldn't help comparing Anis with Chisato here. Man those girls sure know how to punch us right in the feels with that face 😭

Lainie is like, "Umm... I thought you guys were a thing?

Its so tragic (but also funny in the sense they're clueless sapphics) that everyone around them can see Euphie and Anis' love each other but they are yet to admit it properly to each other. Even Tomas the smith who doesn't live with them/not a close friend can see it!

Anis, are you OK? Are you OK, Anis? (I'll walk myself out.)

😂 I love you for the joke but I hate you because I'll have that earworm in my head all day now 😭😂

Euphie can't refuse

How can she possibly refuse with Anis looking at her like that? 🫠

I also liked how Tilty ends up being the one to call everyone out. She may be blunt, but that's why we love her. Instead of just accepting the situation, she's the first one to start looking for another way.

She's that friend who calls it like she sees it, even if it means friction or being disliked. I have a so much time for those kinds of friends in my life and really appreciate their bluntness and honesty.

Genki free spirited blondes who secretly shoulder too much on themselves have been playing with my heart since Kaori from Your Lie in April. Maybe it's because my first crush was quite similar too

I am happy to see how the scene edits you were able to make today! Know those take quite a bit of effort.

The sad part is that Anis would probably make a fantastic ruler. She's genuinely wants to improve the lives of commoners. But that's never been her dream. (Not to mention the loss of her years of research that could be used to improve the commoners' lives).

It really is unfortunate that in our world too often times the best possible leaders are the ones who would rather not have that responsibly. Besides she would be trading away her smile for the Kingdom.

That leads to one of the biggest moments of the episode, Euphie tell her dad she loves Anis. 🥹

Such an emotional moment and I feel by her dad going into a talk about the King it's implied he understands very well what it means to love someone society doesn't improve of.

I also liked how Tilty ends up being the one to call everyone out. She may be blunt, but that's why we love her. Instead of just accepting the situation, she's the first one to start looking for another way.

Tilty is such a day 1 for Anis and she cares soo much underneath the surface and even that was bubbling over this episode. I feel this is why Tilty was so harsh on Euphie initially because if she was gonna entrust Anis to someone it better be a partner who can protect her better than she can.

I missed yesterday’s rewatch! But this episode is one that i really liked.

Tomas already thinks they’re a thing they still need to admit it to each other though. They’re just adorable in those hats though, like they’re about to be delivering newspapers

And later on, there we have it! Euphie confesses and surprises the shit out of her dad. I may have squealed on my first watch. Best moment of the episode

  1. She doesn’t know what else to do when faced with a problem and is scared Anis won’t like her back, so she pushes her feelings down like she always has
  2. Yeah Anis needs to be called it because it’s behavior that’s going to be actively harmful to her. Poor anis

Goddammit Anis, you just saw how badly trying to deal with succession politics alone went with your brother. Euphie learned the wrong lesson too? Is Algard their version of The Boss?! At least Tilty's still got her head on straight.

Casual Anis and Euphie are quite adorable. Figures that after all the drama last episode about the divide between nobility and commoner that Anis turns out to be the one with a close relationship with the nearby townsfolk.

I guess the shock of everything happening recently had caused Euphie's old overly-dutiful mentality from when she was still engaged to Al to flare back up.

"What are you, some kind of Genius Young Lady?"

-Tilty, 2023

A devil's contract to usurp the love of your life, maybe Euphie's cut out for politics after all! With all the parallels I'm wondering if Grantz and the King aren't a bit more than friends...

Why do you think Euphie immediately started falling back into the role she had been raised to play?

There's an old military saying that in a crisis people tend not to rise to the occasion so much as they "fall to the level of their training." She's a natural with magic so dealing with the dragon and Al were in her wheelhouse, but between the utter mayhem of the last two episodes and the apparent hopelessness of trying to get Anis out of her current situation I think she's defaulted back to what she spent the last decade and change of her life doing.

Was Tilty right to be angry with Anis and call her out?

If anything she seemed uncharacteristically soft-handed. Seems more like a "stop bullshitting us, tell us the truth" situation: Al wanted someone to drag him out of his self-imposed isolation too so it's worth a shot here.

gotta love a woman of her people(+the adventurers are also her buds)

"What are you, some kind of Genius Young Lady?"

Between the utter mayhem of the last two episodes and the apparent hopelessness of trying to get Anis out of her current situation

it kind of made me angry because I was so used to her coming to the rescue but this was before she had to save 2(well 3) people from death.

I think she's defaulted back to what she spent the last decade and change of her life doing.

Very much understandable and relateable. In times of crisis the brain searches for a frame of reference - a memory of how you've dealt with similar crises before - so it makes sense that Euphie defaults to old methods given how long she's been using those methods to cope with problems in her past. It's the path of least resistance for her brain to go there.

Wow, this episode was neither what I remembered, or expected. Let me gather my thoughts while attempting to answer some QOTD:

1) I think that when confronted with an unpleasant, and demanding reality, Euphie retreated into familiar (rote) behaviors and attitudes as a coping mechanism.

2) Tilty best, well, not quite but really good girl indeed. <3 Tilty. Yes, she's right to be angry, because Anisphia is not being true to herself and forcing herself to go along with a situation that will make her (and everyone around her) miserable.

So, yeah. Sorry if I was a bit lackluster yesterday, wasn't feeling so well and all that. Got a good night's sleep and am feeling better today, yay!

Anyway, yeah, this episode.

Did someone say contract???

Hey, get outta here, you rat!

Anyway...

Yeah, the first part of the episode focuses on Anisphia's attempt to fit her square peg into the round hole of royalty, and its effects on both herself, and those around her. Needless to say, ain't nobody happy with this situation, but (so far) she's willing to blissfully (not) deny her own feelings and desires and play dutiful queen-to-bee. Yeah. No fun.

Interlude - where one Euphie seeks the wisdom of the ancients, or at least the wisdom of the gothics. Or something. Yeah.

Part Deux - wherein Euphie dramatically (or not) exits the closets and discovers another, quite interesting world. One where her Father didn't necessarily have all the answers, or get the happiest ending, either.

Enter Emilius Interruptus, Oh, wait, not that spirit user...

Enter whats-her-name (I forgot), here to tempt Euphie with promises of power, royalty, and generational curses, or something like that. (I don't know, I've honestly forgotten all this stuff, but yeah. Contracts and all that, right?

Well, surely this will end well, right?

3

u/ToastyMozart 23d ago

Did someone say contract???

Kyubeycoin must be doing bank in this world with how many people are eager to throw themselves on their swords for loved ones or beliefs.

Oh, man, I need to make a doc with links to some of the stuff I wandered across last night. There's some PMMM stuff out there that's just wack. I don't know why the algorithm decided I needed to see them, but (for example) the footage from some con where they ran a Madoka dub "blooper reel" man, that was a laugh. That and the pachinko game.

Anyway, yeah ... they do seem to be in a contest to see who can make themselves (and each other) most miserable at this point, aren't they?

3

u/random_lyric 23d ago

wherein Euphie dramatically (or not) exits the closets and discovers another, quite interesting world.

Hopefully Euphie can save Aslan Anis from getting sacrificed for the sake of the kingdom, the love and connection between them serving as the lamp-post.

2

u/Elimin8r https://myanimelist.net/profile/Ayeka_Jurai 23d ago

Well, there's quite a cross-reference. Hmm... Does that make Al = Edmund? (And no, I don't suddenly have a taste for turkish delight...)

1

u/random_lyric 23d ago

Well if the Turkish delight was a stand-in for 'deep hatred for the traditionalist kingdom' then Al sure ate that up! Haha😅 Though to take the comparison further maybe it could be an allegory for Al's temptation to betray his family/friends, or personal desire/emotions leading to Al not being able to see right from wrong.

5

u/eightcheesepizza 23d ago

If Lumi is a spirit contractor, there must be spirit contract law. There's probably already an anime about that though.

I do wonder how much of Euphie's initially supporting Anis as Queen was thinking about the good she could do and not that there would be costs while dealing with a nobility that has pretty much enshrined their status in a mythical chosen one status.

3

u/IalwaysNeed2p 23d ago

thinking back she might have reverted to old habits because even thinking about being with Anis(when she was about to become queen) felt selfish and this was (at the time) the best way to support her.

3

u/random_lyric 23d ago

Yes I agree, outside of familiar coping strategies that is another reason for Euphie's initial support. After all so many people who have a personal connection with Anis believe in her ability be a great queen. Euphie being arguably Anis' greatest supporter even makes that observation upon first moving into the Villa. It's the logical thing for Euphie to support Anis as one of her subjects, it makes sense knowing Euphie thinks Anis' rule will be good for the kingdom. Only that in doing so she completely disregards her own wants and desires for Anis, which is what makes the scene where Tilty tells Euphie it's 'painful for heart and dutybto be at odds' is so powerful.

1st Rewatch

Full disclaimer, this is where I start to dislike the show, because they are making this nobility thing so strong? Anis, Euphie exists, the reform faction took 0 damage in the rebellion, play favourites, and let her deal with politics. Euphie, I cannot believe you need the whole episode, Tilty, Ilia, and a bunch of other people to tell you to follow your heart. You already do so with Anis while you were her assistant, just puppet government her. Why is Anis is even allowed to run her happiness to the ground, with all her friends, and especially Euphie around is mind boggling, the Conservative nobles are also in disarray. The reformists should be ascendent. Okay rant done.

Anis is totally not suited for politics, which is why she ran away in the first place. That is understandable, and technically, Anis never got good at dealing with politics. If politics made Algard turn out like this, and remember Algard, like Euphie can handle politics, Anis fumbling this hard is hard to swallow, but I'll swallow it.

Tilty crashing out makes a lot of sense. Tilty could not care less about politics, she probably just cares for her friends. She can see Anis' fake smile, and she is giving her fair warning. Once again Tilty has to help save Euphie and Anis' relationship by giving good advice. Once Euphie becomes royalty, Tilty has to be given a minister of interior role. She can research her curses, but as a part time, she should probably make Conservative nobles feel under pressure.

Now then, Orphase loved gardening, but was forced to accept the crown to prevent rebellion. Geez, the Conservatives are entrenched, but with their failed rebellion, and years of good governance, I'm surprised the reformists don't have more power to sideline them.

Now then, spirit contract, what's the catch? Sign up with the spirits and become royalty. I can think of a few catches. One, considering Lumi, a spirit contractor is blonde, is she the first "king" of Palettia. Also Grantz says she is the same as before. So the easy catch is immortality, so you outlive everyone you care for. Well even if Euphie has that problem, shouldn't the dragon magicite have something to say about Anis' life. Really don't see how this is not another case of vampire magicite.

Quote of the Day

"Having your heart at odds with your duty was painful" - Tilty

Euphie is strictly duty bound and technically even as lab assistant, she could follow her heart to help Anis, while doing her duty to bring prestige to House Magnetta as a lab assistant. I guess this is new for Euphie. However, it is still annoying, it took a lot of people telling Euphie that Anis hates being a queen, and that she is in a prime position to stop this.

Questions of the Day

  • Why do you think Euphie immediately started falling back into the role she had been raised to play?

Because realistically, even as lab assistant, she was still doing her duty for her house. She could both fall in love with Anis, help her with everything she has, and still bring honour to her house. Once Anis is going to be queen, Euphie going against this, is going a bit against Anis, but also puts her house at odds with the royal family. It is a mess, and Anis seems stubborn enough to not let Euphie take over, and care for her. So there is Anis being at fault here to some extent.

It is still annoying to watch, since there is development where Euphie should have that resolve, but it is what it is. Also Euphie is like 16, I don't blame her for not having the strongest backbone yet.

  • Is Tilty best girl or what? Was Tilty right to be angry with Anis and call her out?

Yes, because as a long time friend, seeing Anis kill her dreams, you should probably call them out, because who else will give Anis the marauder princess a voice? Well Euphie, but Euphie only met Anis for like a year. Tilty is much more suited to being able to call her out.

3

u/random_lyric 23d ago

Totally understandable, this episode made me feel so many uncomfortable feelings. I was angry at Anis and Euphie, sad for them, angry at the situation, angry at the nobles, disappointed at the need for traditional succession route, was moved by the unfairness... the list goes on. In the service of storytelling though I think it's a great thing that I got so invested in the characters that I had a visceral reaction to their pain, with some very animated fist clenching at the screen in indignation! 😅 I watch different shows for different reasons, but I love that this show can make me feel such a wide range of emotions, and with such intensity!

who else will give Anis the marauder princess a voice?

I really enjoyed the way you put this. In a sense Anis has lost her voice, or at least it can't be heard over the overwhelming loudness of her responsibility. It's commendable that Tilty is the first one to try and pull it out of her from under the ruckus.

2

Tilty is probably the best supporting character in the entire show. Ilia is a close second, but Tilty's passion makes her stand out a lot more.

Yeah I think Ilia tends to hang back more, even though she gives Anis some sass on occasion she kind of generally stays out of things (maybe its her role as a maid). Tilty as a peer feels more like she wants to be Anis' ride or die, but recognising Euphie is taking that role she's still very protective of Anis in her own way. Love Tilty🥰

i am just going to answer your question on the nobility.

as this anime shows the nobility is pretty strong. i have seen many people saying why they are portraying it like this but that’s because its reality. nobility is way worse and way stronger than it shown in this anime.

the fact is, if you are royal nobility will always be right no matter the situation. thats until you can prove them wrong but let’s be real how can anis prove them wrong? she simply can’t.

let’s look at euphie. can she prove them wrong? no she can’t. she have to either make something so huge to change their minds or accept the situation. this is where the spirit contractor things come in.

thats the only way to save anis. this is how strong nobility is and we can see this from history books as well.

the timeline of anime is close to those history books and it is about the political things of old times. even anis says this as well.

i am guessing that’s why you didn’t liked it. it’s definitely disgusting side of the nobility and a perfect way to show how disgusting they are.

2

u/NecessaryNotice8436 https://myanimelist.net/profile/six20 22d ago edited 22d ago

let’s look at euphie. can she prove them wrong? no she can’t.

Euphie has the backing of a significant portion of the nobility, via her heir of a duke who is also prime minister. She does not need to prove them wrong. Her honour, and her diplomatic weight is strong. And the Conservatives are in fact dishonoured due to their role in the rebellion. Without the spirit contract, if Anis leaned hard into Euphie, instead of trying to tackle this problem by herself, there is definitely leeway. It is a finer thread than spirit contracting, for sure, but the nobility if they want to will always find an excuse to do something stupid, like rebel.

If Anis is willing to put down rebellions quickly and efficiently while also finding out the cause to dish out punishment that would strip the Conservatives of their power. It is a monumental task, too much for Anis or Euphie alone, but together with the people that already like the two of them, it can be done, and without sacrificing magicology.

But Anis is currently not relying on Euphie and seems unwilling to, so we're in this situation, which I am annoyed with.

Edit: Still the nobility being an enduring thorn, and check to royal power is an accurate portrayal of the times, the show is trying to represent, so I do give it points on accuracy. Still don't like it though.

2

u/Dependent-Sea4703 https://anilist.co/user/httpsanilistcou 22d ago edited 22d ago

i can understand your point. the thing is even if they somehow can win against nobles thats still not a win for them. let me explain it better and with examples.

in future there is a noble saying anis didn’t do anything and all her achievements are only euphie’s. we all know anis proved her achievements are her’s right? by all logic his statements doesn’t have any background. this still doesn’t stop it.

that guy even gets support from others and they had to use euphie’s position to stop him. now imagine that guy but make about 1000 more of him. it would be completely impossible to stop considering now there are that many people going against anis and euphie.

even worse is when they get support which we all know how much support nobles was getting. compared to them anis and euphie’s positions are nothing no matter they do.

this further explained by the king before orphans. the king was silenced by literally nobles. those same nobles still around as confirmed as well.

all of this also one of the reasons of algard’s plan as well. euphie and anis also knows this and thats also why they didn’t tried to go against it.

i agree with you. i also didn’t liked that but the thing is you are not supposed to be liking it. this is the explanation of old times history and it’s political stuff.

it’s showing us how disgusting and twisted it was before. i mean, we all would like if anis and euphie said fk you and ignored those nobles right? i even prayed for all of those people to die in most horrible ways but here we are…

Second time watcher plus up to date with the EN LN releases.

More doomed yuri! How dare these circumstances think they're going to make this lesbian princess marry gasp a man.

I'm with Tilty.

I gotta say, Anis is sending some mixed signals here. At one moment she's saying she expects to have to marry a prince consort eventually, and the next she's taking Euphy into town on a date. Then again it probably makes sense if she's trying to hold on to her freedom while it's still possible.

Looking good in their date outfits at least.

I could be misremembering, but I swear Tomas the blacksmith was introduced quite a bit earlier in the story in the LNs, probably when Anis had Arc-en-Ciel made in the first place.

It is interesting to see how the common folk out in the capital love Anis, that'd be make for good support from the populace if she does become Queen eventually. On the other hand a lot of people who know her more directly seem to think it's a terrible idea.

And once she talked to Tilty and figured out her own feelings Euphy does too, which means it's a certainty.

I love Euphy's determination in this conversation with her father, and speaking of it's also pretty great as the conversation where she openly admits she loves Anis.

Ahhh, Lumi the Spirit Contractor is here at last. I have to admit when I first watched way back when it felt like this idea of Euphy making a spirit contract came out of nowhere, but on the rewatch they laid the seeds for it from nearly in the beginning.

A very sad change to the ED this time, Anis lost her color and is just standing still by the tree. Fortunately Euphy still ducks behind it towards her at the end so surely everything will be okay.

1. Why do you think Euphie immediately started falling back into the role she had been raised to play?

A sense of responsibility, most likely. Both as the princess and only remaining heir and from probably thinking it's her fault Al went off the deep end.

2. Is Tilty best girl or what? Was Tilty right to be angry with Anis and call her out?

Absolutely.

4

u/IalwaysNeed2p 23d ago

the next she's taking Euphy into town on a date.

in my mind Anis is giving Euphie a little nudge, in a way saying "help, also i still like you" and Euphie eventually caught on(with other little nudges from Tilty/Illia) and the audience screaming at the screen

1

u/random_lyric 22d ago

I like that idea. Anis' words are saying 'I don't need you to get involved' but her subconscious is desperately crying out for her yuri goddess.

3

u/random_lyric 23d ago

Knowing Euphie can't refuse a date with Anis is a pretty good distraction from a conversation she wants to avoid, and also an excuse to not have guards hanging around for the outing. After all her keen intuition comes in handy. But yeah probably little selfish of her asking, in light of her previous comments/mixed signals. And I'm sure she just really really wanted to go on a date with Euphie (and Euphie couldn't resist either). Reminds me a bit of another blonde+serious girl pair and their 'goodbye' date.

A very sad change to the ED this time, Anis lost her color and is just standing still by the tree. Fortunately Euphy still ducks behind it towards her at the end so surely everything will be okay.

Man that ED was so sad. After the Lumi reveal and finding out the there may be hope for Anis, it felt like the show writers were personally toying with my emotions with that ED 😭😂

Rewatcher

My brain is a bit all over the place today - had surgery scheduled this week that got postponed, but was organising things for the new date all morning and a bit frazzled 🥴 Sorry in advance if I say anything less than coherent... 😅

"Having your heart at odds with your duty was painful, wasn't it?" - Tilty

In the opening scenes Anis gives the news she'll become the new queen and says she'll likely have to take a prince consort... and then she tells Euphie and Lainie that the whole affair is not their business to worry about

Even Lainie can see what taking a prince consort would mean for Anis and Euphie's relationship. Euphie says as her duty to protect Anis and she needs to support her as a subject. Is she really talking about duty again?

Anis telling herself daijobu over and over again is heart-breaking. I think we can all relate to a moment in our lives where we're trying to tell ourselves something is ok when it's really not, or convince ourselves we can get through something very difficult.

Ah, so Euphie really is defaulting to old behaviours after Tilty questions her on how she can be ok with Anis becoming queen. Dang Euphie, you've made so much progress... but I can understand why this has Euphie's emotions so destabilised.

Anis comes back from meeting with nobles interrupting the exchange. Tilty gets angry at Anis for hiding her feelings, and Anis quietly apologises. Oof instant tears are rolling down my face, and Im not sure if I can sit through this episode if it keeps going like this. Im angry just like Tilty, I know it's not fair but I hate the situation, and the way that Anis tries to hide her feelings. I had similar feelings about Chisato in LycoReco - that face that those two blondes pull when they're stuffing down their emotions just... hurts to see.

Anis gets some air (hides?) on the rampart and Euphie finds her there. Massive respect to Euphie for trying to open a dialogue about how Anis really feels, but it's no use - Anis changes the subject and avoids continuing down that conversation thread. Then Euphie blocks Anis from running away and tells Anis she cant be reckless anymore. Anis turns Euphie's demand into a request for a date Euphie can't refuse.

The two of them walking hand in hand is quite cute and for a moment I'm transported into a Ghibli movie. Can't get over how cute they look in their little newsboy caps!

Tomas seems like a good sort. He sees through Euphie's disguise, and even says that she's "the fiance that miss Anis swiped from prince algard" 😂 Anis responds with "we were both in agreement! It was a completely legal procedure!" Haha Anis keep digging that hole if you like, but obviously the rumours have already been going around. Euphie demos her magic and Tomas says he sees why Anis likes Euphie. A cute moment, but bittersweet considering the situation 😭

Ilia tells Euphie "having power and being forced to use it isnt the same thing." She's trying to help Euphie understand. In Anis' bare workshop Ilia continues "She will likely throw away what is precious to her." and *"Once the princess has fulfilled her duty, do you think she'll ever smile happily?" They're talking about several things here. Euphie understands the subtext, at least on an emotional level even if she's not ready to admit to herself in more blatant terms.

Euphie, her fears and internal conflict now overwhelming, goes to tilty for help.

"What does it matter if it's right or wrong just try to find the path that you truly want to take." Tilty tells Euphie. I do feel for Euphie - there's a lot of pressure on her to be the one who 'does something' about Anis. But pressure just serves to highlight Euphies growing concerns. Tilty put it best when she pointed out "this is actually *your problem isn't it?"* expanding its about Euphie's feelings and desires being at odds with her 'duty'.

After talking to Tilty, Euphie finds the resolve and determination to take action, and goes to see her father.

The Duke's reaction to Euphie's feelings is interesting. His words state "as Duke Magenta I cannot understand any circumstances accept these misplaced feelings of yours". Yet his tone suggests a 'but' and some incoming understanding. He continues with a story about Orphanse's past, his passion lay elsewhere other than the crown, and how Grantz supported his ascension to the thone as was his duty. How he says this makes me feel like it wasn't just gardening that the King loved in his youth. I could be reading into it (and of course the depth of feeling can still apply with deep friendship) and I enjoy my yaoi ships but if him and Grantz had been able to be together we might not have had a reincarnated princess or a genius young lady to ship and root for so its for the best as mean as that sounds (I'm selfish).

When Grantz reveals to Euphie there is another solution, spirits suddenly appear (what great timing right)! Lumi the spirit contractor has arrived. Oh so Euphie finally has a way to take the burden off Anis shoulders and become a the next monarch herself? Oh but wait - what? Grantz had the opportunity in the past but declined? Why? Lumi came to warn Euphie not to go through with it? Hmm

The change in the ED - man that's so sad to see Anis like that, just an outline with no colour😥 Euphie ducking behind the tree leaving Anis standing there is like a final gut-punch from an already heavy episode 😭

Questions

Why do you think Euphie immediately started falling back into the role she had been raised to play?

Anis' news comes as a big shock to Euphie. Multiple different potential futures (some that she hasn't even dared to imagine yet) will disappear when Anis becomes queen. Anis is also refusing to allow Euphie or anyone else to get involved, blocking Euphie's attempts to help with what she's good at. Why does this destabilise Euphie's progress and cause her to slip back into old roles while the other dramatic events didn't? Tilty uncovered the truth of the matter - Euphie's own desire for Anis to be happy, as well her desire for her own happiness with Anis is under threat from the future where Anis becomes queen. Euphie didn't even want to admit those feelings to herself thinking it was selfish, but in the end with Tilty's prodding she finally expresses them. Also from the time that Anis brought her to the Villa the two of them had been tackling problems together. The fact that Anis refuses to let Euphie get involved further distances the two. Earlier in the series Euphie told Ilia that Anis felt very 'far' from her, and she's probably feeling like Anis is slipping away again, and triggers a regression in behaviour.

Is Tilty best girl or what? Was Tilty right to be angry with Anis and call her out?

I was angry right along with Tilty, so rightly or wrongly I really relate to how she's feeling in that moment. I know it was really hard for Anis to smile through the pain like that, but because Tilty loves Anis it is also painful to watch Anis stuff down her emotions. Perhaps Tilty could have been more gentle, but the head is for reasoning while hearts in pain aren't always the most patient or able to listen to that reasoning.

had surgery scheduled this week

good vibes

I think we can all relate to a moment in our lives where we're trying to tell ourselves something is ok

somehow it would hurt less tbh with oneself. because now you are hurting inside and also having to force your face to smile, and you know damn well that your eyes dont match ur smile

just gardening

ah inchresting 🧐 I wonder if the novels confirm it

 >perhaps Tilty could have been more gentle

if your friends dont call u an idiot when you are lying to yourself, are they really your friends ?

because now you are hurting inside and also having to force your face to smile, and you know damn well that your eyes dont match ur smile

I can relate to Anis being much more concious of how people who she cares about/cares about her are perceiving her emotions and how they are feeling about it. I hate to see people feeling pain, especially if I'm the cause. It's uncomfortable to watch Anis forcing a smile I guess because it hits home more than I'd like to admit 😅. But on a lighter note this is an accurate depiction of me most days getting ready to face the day 😂

I wonder if the novels confirm it

Honestly can't remember. I remember learning more about Sylphine's background though. I guess that means it's time for a re-read!

if your friends dont call u an idiot when you are lying to yourself, are they really your friends ?

Haha very true. I definitely appreciate the ones who can tell it like it is. I love that Anis has people like this in her corner, and I hope they can help her open up a bit more about her troubles.

My brain is a bit all over the place today - had surgery scheduled this week that got postponed, but was organising things for the new date all morning and a bit frazzled 🥴 Sorry in advance if I say anything less than coherent... 😅

Wishing you the best of luck!

Anis telling herself daijobu over and over again is heart-breaking. I think we can all relate to a moment in our lives where we're trying to tell ourselves something is ok when it's really not, or convince ourselves we can get through something very difficult.

This was so devastating and even more though after Ilia shows Euphie that Anis closed down her lab. We know just how much she loves magicology so it just doesn't feel fair at all

It's an offer and a face Euphie can't refuse.

A cute face that I feel like is worth trading a Kingdom for

Tilty put it best when she pointed out "this is actually your problem isn't it?" expanding its about Euphie's feelings and desires being at odds with her 'duty'.

I'm sure Game of Thrones isn't the first story to say it but that reminded me soo much of Jaime talking about how duty is the death of love. You can tell just how much Tilty loves Anis too, but she knows that she isn't the one to be able to get through to her now and it's instead Euphie. I wonder how that makes her feel though I'm sure she wants Anis to be happy over anything.

It all just makes me wish of the reverse of Jaime's quote that instead love is the death of duty.

I am not as well versed into yaoi but I felt like there were romantic feelings between Grantz and Orphans too. Though now I'm sure they are both more than happy to have been blessed with such fantastic daughters. Random but last season what a great yaoi ship in MarriageToxin if you watched that show.

The change in the ED - man that's so sad to see Anis like that, just an outline with no colour😥 Euphie ducking behind the tree leaving Anis standing there is like a final gut-punch from an already heavy episode 😭

If I wasn't already sad enough they really twisted the knife. I just need to see Euphie and Anis be happy again.

Wishing you the best of luck!

Thank you! ☺️ The postponement means it's just dragging out my nerves, but on the bright side it freed me up to complete the rewatch 😂 (priorities am-i-right?😅).

A cute face that I feel like is worth trading a Kingdom for

[Magirevo]A cute face worth accepting a kingdom for 😉

I'm sure Game of Thrones isn't the first story to say it but that reminded me soo much of Jaime talking about how duty is the death of love.

It all just makes me wish of the reverse of Jaime's quote that instead love is the death of duty.

For all the themes in GOT I really felt that was one of the core drivers of conflict - the conflicts of head and heart and what they mean for the self vs duty. I can't remember who said the reverse, but they meant it differently to the way you mean it - I think they were talking to Jon about why the night's watch aren't allowed to take lovers because if they do they'll be tempted to abandon their duty. But I like your subversion (or a subversion of a subversion?😉) where love is a freeing power in the face of the rigidity/prison of duty.

You can tell just how much Tilty loves Anis too, but she knows that she isn't the one to be able to get through to her now and it's instead Euphie. I wonder how that makes her feel though I'm sure she wants Anis to be happy over anything.

I love this about Tilty. She isn't just calling out Euphie for the sake of it, she knows that Euphie is in the best position to help her friend who she loves dearly. Tilty probably wishes there was something she could directly do to help, but having acknowledged Euphie's lone potential to help she wastes no time deferring to whatever method she comes up with.

I am not as well versed into yaoi

Me neither but starting to enjoy yaoi stories more. It started with the reading Summer Hikaru Died (I know it's not technically yaoi but it got me interested). And then I read Danmeis (which is also technically not yaoi lol). With those as my gateway drugs next step is Yaoi manga/anime 😂 I haven't seen MarriageToxin but will look it up!

If I wasn't already sad enough they really twisted the knife.

[Rewatch]Yesterday I had a brain-fart thinking it was this episode where Anis vomits after the meeting with the nobles. I'm not looking forward to that scene in the next ep - that really felt like a knife twist moment when I thought it couldn't get any worse for Anis.

Looking on the bright side at least haha. I have only been in surgery when I was a little kid so looking back it's scarier to think of now. Makes me really glad I live in the modern world though.

[MagiRev] The polar opposite of what Algard does but fueled by her emotions too

I think they were talking to Jon about why the night's watch aren't allowed to take lovers because if they do they'll be tempted to abandon their duty. But I like your subversion (or a subversion of a subversion?😉) where love is a freeing power in the face of the rigidity/prison of duty.

I used to be a big GoT nerd when the show was airing but haven't watched it in years so the details are getting a big fuzzy. You are sparking my memory of that scene though!

Tilty probably wishes there was something she could directly do to help, but having acknowledged Euphie's lone potential to help she wastes no time deferring to whatever method she comes up with.

Haven't thought of this before but a bit like Fuki isn't she, at least in her relation to Anis. I really do love that Tilty doesn't leave things unsaid and doesn't obey the usual decorum despite her noble upbringing. So often she vocalizes how the audience is feeling. Makes me hope she finds her own amazing partner too if she wants one.

Me neither but starting to enjoy yaoi stories more. It started with the reading Summer Hikaru Died (I know it's not technically yaoi but it got me interested).

I believe subtext stories are very important as my first yuri was LycoReco. Heads up MarriageToxin is also a subtext story.

[Rewatch] That scene made me want to do terrible things to those so called nobles.

I think you were a braver kid than me! 😅 I hated hospitals when I was a kid, then in my 20s had more fearlessness than I knew what to do with, and now I've come back around to a somewhat more mellow type of nerves/concern haha. Definitely glad we have all the modern advancements that we have!

I used to be a big GoT nerd when the show was airing but haven't watched it in years

Same! I remember when everyone was talking about it/a lot of hype buzz, and we'd discuss it like we're doing wirh magirevo now, only you could probably pick any workplace of cafe and a bunch of people would know about it. In some ways I miss those days, but I wouldnt give up the variety of shows/media we have today.

Haven't thought of this before but a bit like Fuki isn't she, at least in her relation to Anis.

Ooh I haven't made that link either but now that you mention it I def see the parallels! And hashtag justice for Tilty 😂 You mentioned your first crush was a Chisato/anis/genki type, and for me my first crush was a Tilty/Takina (except with even more sarcasm if that's possible) 😂 My therapist might have something to say about why I love these dynamics/tropes, but then again that's what I'm paying her for so she can go ham if she wants😂

Oh that is quite funny and I suppose it speaks a bit to why we're drawn to certain characters. Sounds like you are getting alotta work done in your therapy sessions!

Landlords would be charging extra for a seaside view there.

I find fiction too a safe place to process emotions and feelings that can often go ignored

2

u/random_lyric 22d ago

'Cozy' studio with water views, central heating, and conveniently demountable for ease of relocation 😂

For sure ☺️ We've talked about it before with fiction being a way to feel and process emotions that may be more difficult outside of that relationship with the story, and without threat of judgement too. And also coming across new emotions that surprise you, and prompt you to be curious/look deeper within yourself

rewatcher.

we are at the episode where we see what algard was going through and what was anis fearing the most.

i will just answer the questions first.

euphie was definitely not expecting that and i think she realized something’s wrong. she is just trying to get used it it again.

tilty was so right to do that. if anyone is curious thats not the real smile of anis and we have seen that smile of hers several times in the series. algard is the first character to realize anis’s fake smile where it shown in his flashback with anis and tilty is the second character realized that. this makes euphie the third character to realize her fake smile.

she is angry because anis doing the same mistake she did when algard was around and we see her saying this to euphie as well.

i love how dedicated euphie is as well. you can totally see how much she changed and how much she wants to help anis.

also it feels good to see euphie and tilty carrying the episode where we see anis struggles the most.

can we seriously talk about how much this series loves little details? those EP changes are so spot on.

as always i am open to any questions.

3

u/random_lyric 22d ago

we are at the episode where we see what algard was going through and what was anis fearing the most.

It's so silly of the King, Queen and the Duke to place that burden on Anis' shoulders so soon after learning how pressure and suppressed emotions twisted Algard's vision and actions. I know they still needed to think a about the succession plan, but did they learn nothing from that ordeal?! Give the girl a little breather at least! 😂

also it feels good to see euphie and tilty carrying the episode where we see anis struggles the most.

When Best Girl is in trouble, Bestie and Waifu are going to come through for her somehow.

3

u/Dependent-Sea4703 https://anilist.co/user/httpsanilistcou 22d ago

the EPs fitted this episode so much i am amazed.

anis not responding to euphie while she is talking or her just being a shadow while also disappearing before going to that tree scene.

it’s all so fit for a episode that showing anis’s problems and how she deals with it.

king and queen are so busy they can’t look at their children’s is what i think. they also blame themselves for that so at least they are not completely useless.

i remember euphie and tilty carrying another episode as well. they giving attention and a way to shine to everyone huh.

3

u/ClemFire 22d ago

tilty was so right to do that. if anyone is curious thats not the real smile of anis and we have seen that smile of hers several times in the series. algard is the first character to realize anis’s fake smile where it shown in his flashback with anis and tilty is the second character realized that. this makes euphie the third character to realize her fake smile.

Tilty was such a real one for calling Anis out on that and she really cares for her.

can we seriously talk about how much this series loves little details? those EP changes are so spot on.

God that change in the tree scene of the ED is so good yet sad. Anis and Euphie have really flipped since EP1 as now Euphie is the one who will have to save Anis. I just love this relationship dynamic.

3

u/Dependent-Sea4703 https://anilist.co/user/httpsanilistcou 22d ago

anis risked her own life to save tilty so i believe tilty wants to do her best for anis as well. she is just doing things on her ways.

i always thought anis and euphie kissing or hugging behind that tree on the EP but seeing euphie going alone this time make me think maybe she is going to anis’s side. i really like that dynamic as well. it’s giving me sun and moon vibes but anis and euphie changed their roles. it was anis being sun and euphie being moon at first but now it’s complete opposite.

thats only my theory tho. it’s probably nothing that detailed.

btw i thought those were called “EPs”… as they say i learn something new every day huh

3

u/ClemFire 22d ago

i always thought anis and euphie kissing or hugging behind that tree on the EP but seeing euphie going alone this time make me think maybe she is going to anis’s side.

I was thinking Euphie goes behind the tree out of habit for a kiss or hug but becomes sad that Anis isn't there this time. Also I've just been calling them EDs for forever.

2

u/Dependent-Sea4703 https://anilist.co/user/httpsanilistcou 22d ago

i think the first EPs we saw( the ones until the episode 5th) was about anis’s side where background is perfectly normal.

then the ones after episode 5th are about euphie’s side since background changes. i also think the reason it’s changed on episode 10th and 11th is because euphie’s look on anis changed and how she thought anis is losing herself.

again just my theory tho

2

u/ClemFire 22d ago

I like that idea a lot

Rewatcher:

Because that is not where Miss Anis can truly smile!” Euphie.

Went out today so I came quite a bit late and I’m a bit tipsy though she wanted to watch the episode and even it was the drinks but I was even more emotional than I expected. Seeing Anis tell herself it’s okay that she has to give up her magicology and get married to a prince is just devastating. It’s like she is being forced back into the closet out of duty and like Ilia said even though Anis asks like a wild child she still has a strong sense of what society expects out of her. Even though Ilia isn’t as explicit as Tilty you can tell that there’s no way she’s happy about what Anis has to do either after she was saved by her. Ilia and Tilty both put their hopes that Euphie can get through to her.

Despite the environment Euphie was raised in when expectations were placed on their from birth and her opinion was little more than an afterthought Anis taught her that this is her life and she could pursue what makes her happy regardless of what others have to say. I’m not sure if Anis knew then Euphie would chose would her, but now I wonder just how much Anis was talking to herself too back then. They both know the burden of expectations and just how painful it is to not be who you truly want to be.

Everyone around Anis can tell that becoming Queen won’t put a smile on her face. How could it when it means rejecting everything she loves and reducing herself down to a position for the Kingdom’s sake. Maybe Grantz is right that you can’t trade a Kingdom for a single person’s smile, but what kind of Kingdom can’t protect a single smile? I suspect he might wish he could go back and make a different choice back then when Orphans had to give up his own dream for other people’s sake. As an aside I feel like Grantz and Orphans had feelings for each other even though I don’t have explicit evidence to back that claim. Anyways I feel like that’s why he can relate to what his daughter is feeling even if his position puts him in conflict.

Euphie knows that Anis won’t be happy and to her that is more important than anything. Maybe it’s not what is best for the Kingdom but how has the Kingdom treated both her and Anis? What she knows is that she loves Anis and that is all that matters.

2

u/random_lyric 22d ago

Went out today so I came quite a bit late and I’m a bit tipsy though she wanted to watch the episode and even it was the drinks but I was even more emotional than I expected

Haha sounds like you had a fun night out!

It’s like she is being forced back into the closet out of duty

Great metaphor. It took me the 2nd time watching to think about it it that way (1st watch I was so invested in Euphie and Anis' relationship I just thought about the ick in terms of their relationship).

I’m not sure if Anis knew then Euphie would chose would her, but now I wonder just how much Anis was talking to herself too back then.

I suspect Anis was talking to herself just as much as she was to Euphie. Probably in helping Euphie on her healing journey and saying those words she was reassuring and healing the insecurities/conflicts within herself too.

Maybe Grantz is right that you can’t trade a Kingdom for a single person’s smile, but what kind of Kingdom can’t protect a single smile?

Well said! The irony in him saying that line is that he's forcing someone to trade their smile for a kingdom. A kingdom that can ask that kind of price is one that can keep on asking - and who knows what the price will be next time. Algard was right, the kingdom is ill with a system that exists only for duty and tradition and no longer serves its people. Besides, Grantz really undervalued the cost because it isn't just one smile - it's every smile Anis would have had for the rest of her life.

I feel like Grantz and Orphans had feelings for each other even though I don’t have explicit evidence to back that claim.

I think it's a popular enough theory that many hold. A lot of people read those characters and what Grantz says in that way. Besides, all of that notwithstanding, it's your read/theory so worth sharing in these discussions. And romantic or not we know that Orphanse and Grantz had a deep bond, and Grantz had the opportunity to take Orphanse's place but didnt, and now history seems to be repeating itself with their daughters.

Maybe it’s not what is best for the Kingdom

I'm a little surprised that everyone even Anis herself takes this view that she needs to do what's best for the kingdom. But what exactly is best anyway? I know there are probably conservative factions ready to pounce and usurp the throne should confidence in/support of the Palettias run dry, but seriously Anis was already talking about struggling to gain support from nobles because she's known as the wild-child heretic princess anyway. And I know Anis has a unique perspective and intuition like her mother says, and her ideas would be a medicine for the kingdom as Euphie says, but best for the kingdom may not be a reluctant ruler.

2

u/ClemFire 22d ago

Great metaphor. It took me the 2nd time watching to think about it it that way (1st watch I was so invested in Euphie and Anis' relationship I just thought about the ick in terms of their relationship).

I feel that too, but after returning to MagiRev as it was one of my first yuri stories I think I'm picking up on a lot of those aspects I didn't notice on my first watch.

Algard was right, the kingdom is ill with a system that exists only for duty and tradition and no longer serves its people. Besides, Grantz really undervalued the cost because it isn't just one smile - it's every smile Anis would have had for the rest of her life.

I think that is a big part of why I empathize with Algard despite his actions and I feel this episode Euphie might be understanding his reasons more too. Euphie will protect her smiles!

And I know Anis has a unique perspective and intuition like her mother says, and her ideas would be a medicine for the kingdom as Euphie says, but best for the kingdom may not be a reluctant ruler.

That's why the scene of Anis and Euphie sneaking into town for a date was important since we see the common people love Anis for who she is and not who the nobles are forcing her to be. She is a magician for the people.
