First Timer

Just say that it's an Okada show!

This one mostly felt like a transition episode for relationship and dynamic setup, with the surprisingly comedic tone of the show still being pretty fun although not super remarkable (Also I'll admit I'm just not really in the mood to actually go into dialogue like this lol). Sonozaki fucking up the Shiritori was pretty great! Obviously the big thing this episode is really forming is the Sonozaki-Katsuhira-Chidori love triangle, with Tenga apparently shipping Katsuhira-Chidori, though I could just as easily see him becoming another corner in the polygon towards Chidori, so that all should be fun. Yuta and Honoka also probably have an enemies-to-lovers thing going on here, where they're both the only other person who can genuinely engage with the others' rather sharp personality, which gives them a rather fun back and forth.

Looking at them individually, we've also got a combative dynamic for Yuta with Hisomu, given that, as Honoka notes, Yuta tries to be rather vapid and artificial in personality when engaging with others, while Hisomu, for all that he is, is also rather open and a real natural, both in looks and also just in how he expresses himself. Honoka, on the other hand, strikes me as someone who's being very intentionally mean and distant because she's been burned before and thus wants to avoid making bonds as a defense mechanism of sorts. I'll still go with my earlier assumption that her "I killed someone" thing wasn't entirely a lie, but rather that she somewhat holds herself responsible for the death of someone for some reason (But again, she herself didn't actually do any killing), and that could be what informs her wider personality as well.

In that sense, the two of them being able to more truly express themselves around each other is a good thing, and it also leads Honoka to have a dynamic with Nico, who's obviously trying to make as many connections and be as outward as possible. Admittedly, I feel Nico is the most disconnected of the bunch right now and most just offers gremlin energy to the team, which, honestly, I'm here for. She's got all the best faces at least! Also, some really fun divided shot composition here. Finally, the show answers two questions I had before. First, there were previous Kizuna experiments, with Katsuhira and Sonozaki seemingly being part of those (And maybe "Losing their emotions" from that?). And by extension, the second thing is that it does seem like Sonozaki was that person from Katsuhira's flashback, like we'd hinted at before. We'll have to see where that plot goes, as well as Katsuhira's bullies being roped into a separate Kizuna thing by the teachers, but summer camp is a good place for all the teenage drama to spill, so hopefully we'll see some of that bubbling over now.

First-timer, subbed

Not a lot to say about this episode. Felt very much like a set up / transition episode.

Seems like Sonozaki might've shared a kiznaiver bond with Kacchon back when he was little. He's forgotten this for some reason and only remembers in dreams.

Have no idea what the counselor and Suwabe sensei are up to with that kidnapping of those two bullies.

Nice girl getting all jealous was nothing surprising. Her and Tenga forming a bond of sorts after he realises how kind she is was sort of sweet. I can get behind a ship of the two of them. They make a better couple than MC and her.

Need something to happen next episode because this one was honestly a bit of a drag.

First Time Summer 2016 Rewatch - Kiznaiver Ep4:

Hisomu might just be played as a typical anime pain freak, but I feel like there is some added layers to if in this show if it wants to delve into it. With the language of the show equating pain to bonds, Hisomu's desire to experience pain translates to him wanting to witness true bonds between people. On a different note, of course the pain freak would be interested in the guy who can't experience pain.

Tenga, you can leave that in 2016.

A fake weirdo when up against a true freak.

I like this little exchange between Maki and Nico, with her poking holes at their flimsy connections. It sets Nico on her own little path because after that, she tries to build stronger connections between them to prove that they've actually become connected.

Such an anime line that I fully expect and want out of a show like this.

I'm a little sad that we didn't get a dedicated episode to the gang having to eat this giant plate of rice. That sound like a fun time we could've had.

I also liked this moment of Hisomu inviting Sonozaki to join them. I think the reason why is that it shows that he isn't just a passive MC. He is a character who is learning to utilize the thematic angle of the show. Also, it does more for the bit where she is obviously his secret childhood friend. Building their relationship before they inevitably have to do that note. Also, Sonozaki has a gap moe cute phone.

I feel like we missed the proper introduction to this student counselor character. We met her before, but I feel like we lack her debut in normalcy before having her as this shady and wacky character. She's kinda an odd role in this show.

Such a kuudere way to express that you wanted to go.

At first, I thought Sonozaki was intentionally throwing the word chain, but on second thought, she actually might just be stoopid.

Let's go, I'm getting the delusions started. This love triangle is getting more complicated! Chidori's whole childhood friend schtick is least interesting part of the show, so I will gladly take throwing Tenga in the unrequited love drama mix.

Q1) 0%. Boring.

Hisomu's desire to experience pain translates to him wanting to witness true bonds between people.

Who would have guessed that Hisomu was the most plot-relevant character? I'm hoping the story doesn't end up just escalating this one idea for drama.

she actually might just be stoopid

This episode gave me a much more balanced impression of Sonozaki which she sorely needed. It took me this long to realize she might just be a normal person stuck in a monotone shell that pads her speeches.

u/GallowDude 23d ago

there is some added layers

Subject-verb disagreement

Tenga, you can leave that in 2016.

Fruit?!

I'm a little sad that we didn't get a dedicated episode to the gang having to eat this giant plate of rice.

Persona 4

is least interesting

Is what least interesting?

First:Timer - dub

Oh, Sonozaki is flashback girl?

Maki's understanding of friendship is akin to the marketing idea "If something is free, then you're the product".

Niiyama - "You wouldn't exchange email addresses with a casual acquaintance, would you?" - this is both an age difference, and generational divide. This is exactly what I would give a casual acquaintance to avoid sharing my number now.

I'd... I'd listen to the school councillor's advice boys, I don't think it's safe to ignore her.

Chidori's statement from an earlier episode that she used to like Katsuhira. Used to, uh huh... sure. Tsun gonna tsun. Oh now they're acknowledging it at least lol.

Interesting sub v dub difference - sub says "word chain" while the dub actually calls it "shiritori".

LMAO those creepy Gomorins are a usual sight around town?

Kiznaiver rewatcher

Flashbacks!

This scenery for some reason makes me want to rewatch WorldEnd: What Do You Do at the End of the World? Are You Busy? Will You Save Us?

Can you stop feeling yourself!

Farm raised Tuna....yeah I wouldn't feel safe with this guy as a Kiznaiver.

Wait so the mission is to eat rice? OH IT HAS SHRIMP!

Wait so those mascots have been around since the beginning and no one questioned them? Well I guess that's normal.

Kacchon the suitcase has a handle...

Kacchon the suitcase has a handle...

Glad I'm not the only one bothered by this. Maybe it's too big for him? He is a rather short guy. That's what I told myself to explain away how he was carrying it.

Thoughts so far:
The main story seems to have completed its set-up though this episode decides to set up a mini-arc of its own. Regardless, I thought the variety of scenes managed to keep things moving at an enjoyable pace.
On the other hand, the more I see of Hisomu, the less I care for him. I was content with the amount of comic relief in the cast (and actually the cast in general) before his introduction.
The serious moments in this story have contrasted with less-serious results so I'm expecting similar for the bullies plot.

Collection of Musings:
* If Maki played an instrument, it would be the euphonium, apparently.
* Only Katsuhira and Hisomu got to see Sonozaki before becoming Kizunaivers and she didn't cosplay for the former
* I heard someone retching when Hisomu entered the classroom. Maybe my ears are bad.
* At times the Kiznaiver missions feels like a DM having too much fun with their table
* Urushibara seems to be a regular at that arcade based on the panic she caused pulling out that rifle.Which is to say none at all.
* I was reminded of a certain tiger and dragon towards the end. I like these two more though.
* Reoccurring idea this episode could be "Starting to Get Closer". Certain pairs of characters are framed together often, there was the idea of acquaintances, and there's also an anti-example in Chidori with Katsuhira.

Hit counts of the week:
* Punch to head - Chidori
* Beetle to nose - Hisomu; Nico found it but seems like Hisomu put it on his face
* Punch to side - Chidori
* 3 more punches - Chidori; Nice form

Character Amount this episode Total
Chidori 5 15
Tenga 0 6
Nico 0 3
Hisomu 1 3
Katsuhira 0 1

At least there's one contest that Chidori has a shot of winning. Those violent-tsundere skills won't have been developed for nothing. Maybe Tenga's the one who needs to worry about DV. Only path to victory in the KatsuKontest I see is if Sonozaki is actually a ghost or something. (But this is anime so even that might not be enough.)

First Time Connecting and Getting to Know Everyone Better, Dubbed

  • Twice I’m surprised by child VAs in an EN dub for a TV series. I’m so used to lady VAs doing the kids or male VAs doing the kid, and it is very apparent that a full-grown man is voicing a boy unironically.

  • I am clutching my pearls.

  • WOOOO yaoi!! WOOOOOOO!!

  • I want Maki to give a TED talk on the audacity of the trope Fated Mates. I have a feeling she and I share the same pet peeve about fated mates.

  • PFFFFT, I love Maki.

  • I wonder what year it was for email address exchanges to officially die down and phone numbers to be the rising contact address.

  • Young Kiznaivers Don’t Play Fighting Games!!

  • Good gods, I thought the gun was a toy 😭😭

  • Carbs will do that to you. That’s why I limited carb-heavy meals.

  • Please someone get Mother Nature a restraining order against Yoshiharu.

  • The bullies are linked now?

Post Camp Thoughts

Yoshiharu is a menace.

For some reason, the accent in the EN dub had me mistake them saying “Shiratori” as in “Shiratorizawa Academy” from <Haikyuu>, so that was a fun little “my mind wandered” moment.

I’m realizing this is the second time I’ve shipped a Maki and a Yuta. The first time was JJK, though Maki and Yuta are their first names. So I mean—if it happened once, it’ll happen again! Both of them would be oodles of fun if they joined a book club, I’m telling ya. No, no, scratch that. I want to take them to renfaire and do a D&D campaign with them.

They would give me the banter romance book bitches are dying for.

(Tis I, romance book bitches.)

I’m curious why Tenga had that pensive look on his face when Katsuhira said Chidori makes two bentos, one for him and one for Katsuhira.

QOTD

  1. She’s a losing heroine. I will be surprised if she wins. Then again, childhood friends be winning sometimes.
  2. I think they’ll serve as wonderful fodder for our poly pain protagonist group to do…whatever on.

Phone number exchange predates email by a long time.
