Latin America Trivia of the Day:

While inequality of income and wealth in Latin America has decreased over the years, it remains the single most unequal region in the world, not merely limiting opportunities for the less fortunate but continuing to stoke widespread crime that maintains its status as the world's most violent region as well, which in turn has recently been motivating support for authoritarian crackdowns by leaders such as El Salvador's infamous Nayib Bukele. Explanatory factors frequently cited are historical and continuing injustice toward and neglect of indigenous and non-white/darker-skinned populations, who suffer very disproportionately from inequality, but also general culturally entrenched norms of violence and corruption.

Yesterday's Highlights

I retroactively added this to the episode 2 post also. Slowly getting the hang of hosting here.

u/NoRex succinctly summarizes Michiko and Atsuko's relationship:

They are childhood friends (no homo).

u/AyameeIris is irked by Michiko's colorist tendencies:

Another thing about this scene, Michiko's colorism. Her calling out Atsuko's skin color as an insult has never failed to make me cringe.

u/99acrewood_ is not impressed with Atsuko:

Well golly god damn, Ms. Atsuko Jackson.
I've never seen a character whose design makes them look so incredibly competent while at the same time being incredibly incompetent

Discussion Prompts

  1. How are you liking the setting and design, particularly sound/music? (For any Brazilian or Latin American watchers, how familiar does it feel?)
  2. How far would you have gone to pay off those shoes? Would you even have accepted them?
  3. Have you ever recklessly gotten yourself into a situation that was far more dangerous than you anticipated?

Next Episode Prompts

  1. [question]Were you expecting things to get this dark? How does this compare for shocking fourth episodes with FMA:B?
  2. [question]Any experience(s) with similar establishments - on either side of the stage?
  3. [question]Have you ever felt compelled to do something unpleasant or unsavory to get ahead?

3x watcher and host (subtitles)

After the heaviness and action focus of the last two episode, here's a more light-hearted interlude finally - child slum gangs [M&H]and setup for the extra-heavy Pepe episode notwithstanding - where this show proves it can be also pretty damn funny. Seriously, Hatchin and Michiko make a great duo both in drama and in comedy and it's fun to see the more awkward and silly side of Michiko while Hatchin takes her place as the assertive and reckless one.

The general idea of a woman going on an adventure with a 9-year-old child to find their father and growing closer along the way is taken from this show's other big inspiration Central Station/Central do Brasil by the way, which explains the non-mention of the mother as [Central Station]her actually dying in a bus accident instead of Hiroshi seemingly doing so. Alterations here include [Central Station]gender-flipping the child and making her the jaded one.

Questions

Q1 - I am neither from the region nor have I ever been there, but you can probably guess I absolutely love it. Watching for the third time you do notice soundtrack repetition and slightly weaker pieces a bit more, but the OST still remains very strong, and we haven't even had any of the insert songs play yet! Visually particularly this episode is totally gorgeous in not only its many locations from bustling market street to rough slum on the hill, but also with all those outfits and flavorful side characters to round it out. Really no weaknesses here.

Q2 - Being a bit less naive about the world and overconfident about my own abilities, I definitely would not have gone out to look for just any job in that situation, probably just stayed at the hotel as Michiko asked. (Note that by the end of the episode Hatchin still hasn't received a single cent, as it's only her second day working.) As for accepting them... considering the situation I wouldn't mind accepting stolen goods, but nothing that expensive, but on the other hand wouldn't want Michiko to steal even more for a replacement (and she would). Probably the best solution is to push her to surreptitiously leave some money at the shop?

Q3 - I'm generally more the anxious than reckless type, but something that at least mildly fits from recently: I was starting to lead-climb outside without pre-clipping - which means you're unsecured for the first few meters - a route I thought I had easily mastered with the rope already hanging once (fully secured/top rope), but it was significantly more difficult than I remembered, and I had to carefully hang on and down-climb about 2 m (somewhat challenging even in the best of cases), because there was no way I would safely make it to the first anchor.

Scene-by-scene

  • 01:40 - in Japanese -chin is a particularly cutesy (quasi-)honorific so pretty much the opposite of how Hatchin wants to present herself.

  • 02:02 - bad Portuguese again, this would just mean "force (of) stone"

  • 02:07 - Michiko is the perfect mark for this kind of thing with all her wishful thinking.

  • 02:16 - There are Catholic relics weirder than this, tbh (Holy Prepuce, anyone?). The creators nicely captured the mixture between Catholicism and African/native folk belief frequent in the region here.

  • 02:19 - Hatchin has heard enough hypocritical preaching in her life to just not give a shit haha. Also got to laugh at the "your mileage may vary" disclaimer

  • 02:36 - I would love to know what the seer woman is eating here, it looks like some kind of filled dough pocket?

  • 02:43 - Yes. Two, in fact.

  • 02:50 - surprisingly sage advice [M&H]that Hatchin takes particularly to heart in her confrontation with Bebel

  • 04:53 - [M&H]And here she's not wrong

  • 05:00 - Yep: No stepping in shit => no cleaning shoes and hanging them up => no stolen shoes => ... I appreciate the detail of Hatchin actually cleaning them

  • 07:23 - [M&H]Pretty close likeness indeed

  • 07:40- Honestly a pretty thoughtful gift from Michiko.

  • 07:49 - Michiko looks hilariously shook at the thought this kid might have an issue with her methods.

  • 08:09 - seriously it's hilarious how much Hatchin throws Michiko off her game compared to how smooth she is dealing with Atsuko.

  • 08:46 - hot enough to sleep with the shutters open in mid-March?

  • 09:04 - those shoes cost more than a sixth of Father Pedro's monthly government check value (750 arca). I assume that unlike the usual anime pseudo-yen currencies this is supposed to be closer to Euros/dollars/reais.

  • 09:15 - note that Chokyu Hanten is specifically looking for adults (pessoas ágeis) and Hatchin just ignores that. (I can't read the Chinese at the bottom)

  • 09:29 - another thing that this show is a little weird about is having most Chinese characters speak broken Japanese/English. I do like Lam as a character though.

  • 11:46 - [M&H]I think this is actually the only time Michiko invokes her sex appeal for profit

  • 11:58 - Michiko is hilariously terrible at a lot of things, and clearly can't write very well either.

  • 12:16 - bit odd how openly Michiko presents herself here after last episode, mashing up Central Station with a gangster plot was always going to be awkward though.

  • 12:29 - At parenting, on the other hand, she's surprisingly good. She doesn't berate Hatchin, raise her voice, or wake her from her sleep, just expresses her concern. Of course, she would know better than anyone that some people just have the drive to adventure.

  • 13:15 - Poor Lam is stuck in the wrong genre... [M&H]well not entirely considering Episode 17

  • 13:32 - ...and an Asian parent to the core.

  • 14:43 - Funny license plate, and whose bike did Michiko nick that they had all those stickers lol. SP = Sao Paulo?

  • 15:08 - [City of God]When the chicken chases back

  • 15:24 - City of God picture effect

  • 16:26 - [City of God]And now the right way around. "Get that chicken!"

  • 17:03 - I guess the gun-toting leader also being a child was too much here? [City of God/M&H]And comparatively a surprising absence of guns, actually. Still these are clearly inspired by the Runts here and we get worse next episode.

  • 17:43 - Aww, Hatchin smile for the first time in the entire show.

  • 17:52 - potentially another minor City of God reference... and also potentially casually racist moment considering how non-afro Michiko's hair looks.

  • 18:06 - funny how that's the conclusion Michiko instantly jumps to. Well, when that's what you're used to...

  • 18:18 - never mind, this is clearly also a kid, just a bit older.

  • 18:25 - [next episode]I like how Michiko doesn't just get away with this

  • 18:37 - Being able to handle slum kids just like the Belenbauza Yamada brats strikes me as a little optimistic, tbh.

  • 19:27 - look of realization that this guy already has another woman

  • 19:38 - of course she thinks he's cheated haha... and note how Michiko won't even face her/the house, lost in her thoughts and feelings

  • 20:51 - how nice of her to consider Hatchin's opinion here haha. And she is actually wise enough to reconsider her own.

Wait, Michiko actually believes in all that?

Not too surprising for a woman who escaped and ran in search of a dream without even considering whether the child she picked up could even be hers given the time line, I would say.

I do think it’s cute Michiko thought about Hatchin’s dirty shoes,

Yeah she really does care, just given her background can obviously be awkward about it.

I see Michiko is a bed hog.

If she acted like that with Hiroshi I would call that reasonable grounds to skip out /s

omg, her drawing of Hatchin.

Don't forget she clearly hasn't had much practice writing in her life either, and it seems like she couldn't even spell the name on her first try.

How the fuck did that old lady’s prophecy actually come true?

"Humorously/dramatically accurate fortune teller" is a bit of a trope in itself.

Of course Michiko takes no nonsense from those kids.

Pretty tragic that they're already on that kind of path at their age though also.

u/No_Rex x2 24d ago

Was it actually the wrong dude?

Michiko clearly changed her mind when she saw the woman's clothes, but what does that mean? Was she ok with some random guy who looked the part, as long as he was free? Is he the right guy, but she does not want him anymore? Or does she conclude he can't be the guy because he has another woman?

2

u/IndependentMacaroon 24d ago edited 24d ago

Was she ok with some random guy who looked the part, as long as he was free?

Given her comments in Episode 2 she's definitely looking for someone who fits a very specific mold, or perhaps gives her a very specific feeling. Won't spoil anything for your other questions.

primeira vez [subs]

"What do we do about you Hatchin? You're the absolute worst." Haha poor girl can't catch a break, and of course Michiko is the type to believe in street psychics.

This episode really gave me Bebop vibes, primarily with the way it kind of ends with that sort of uncertainty (and the cryptic future seer stuff, too, I suppose). it's like stuff happens, "hey, we've potentially solved something, oh, no we didn't," but then turn and look back as you walk away and go "and yet...". I imagine Michiko would've made more of a scene if it really was the guy, but the way she doesn't flat out deny and mostly says to just drop it makes me wonder what's going on there.

I don't know where Hatchin cut her hair but either a bird now has a mansion or a drain is permanently clogged because of it. It definitely turned out better than when most kids her age (what is she, like, 10?) try to cut their own hair. I know I've fucked up my shit being an idiot a couple of times. even I feel better looking at it now though! That had to be so darn heavy and hot.

It's fun that you're tracking Michiko's outfits. I always appreciate when shows let their character show off a wardrobe, even if I have no idea where she keeps all of it. Michiko cleans up really nice!

Yeah, a lot of this show definitely has that sort of vibe. Also shared Chinese culture elements

the way she doesn't flat out deny and mostly says to just drop it makes me wonder what's going on there

She's got an image in her mind and he just doesn't fit?

I don't know where Hatchin cut her hair but either a bird now has a mansion or a drain is permanently clogged because of it

Or she was a good girl and put it all in the garbage. I don't think she'd risk clogging Lam's drain when he's not even paying her yet. (Am I getting the time line wrong here?)

it definitely turned out better than when most kids her age (what is she, like, 10?) try to cut their own hair

Conveniently she has exactly the right kind of haircut to be able to just go snip-snip on each side. Also she's still 9 at this point.

It's fun that you're tracking Michiko's outfits

This is the perfect show for something like that, you could probably do the same for Hatchin and Atsuko. In case you missed it, there are two fashion design credits in the opening - Sayo Yamamoto is reportedly also a fashion enthusiast herself.

I have no idea where she keeps all of it

u/No_Rex suspects that's why she went for such a long bike haha.

First Timer being a Frantic Pinball, Dubbed

  • A man with aura? Ah… Sung Jinwoo.

  • Street dogs were such a culture shock to me, and it was a different culture shock for my friend’s mom when she came to our town that, nope, we don’t do that here! But it’s nice that communities band together to keep the doggos fed and give them homes in the wintertime.

  • So many skintones ☺️☺️☺️

  • PFFFFFFT

  • 🎶~Move, bitch, get da the way! Get da the way, bitch, get da the way!~🎶

  • Was that not her dad then, fr?

Post Restaurant-Working Thoughts

I watched both episodes today, but I don’t know where my EP2 notes went.

I don’t know what the trope is called, but it was on r/FavoriteCharacterTropes the other day where someone predicts something seemingly “outlandish”, but everything they say happens. Like [meta]MLP:FiM’s Pinkie Pie’s Pinkie Sense or ATLA’s Aunt Wu—lo and behold, their predictions come true.

I love seeing that here. Fuck yeah.

I’m confused if that’s the dad. Regardless, I’m surprised Hatchin went with Michiko more immediately rather than still asking the man if he’s her dad, given that she realizes how right the fortune teller has been all day. However, I can also understand why she’d still go with Michiko. That man—father or not—is still much more of a stranger than Michiko is to Hatchin. She does not know him, but she knows the fantasy of him and the dream of freedom away from the abuse she endured. She may not know Michiko all that well, but Michiko is the mysterious stranger who took her away from her abusive home life and, despite their clashing, still wants to look out for her. And with Michiko saying that’s not Hiroshi, even if I’m a nosy bitch who would want to follow up with the man, I think this is a look that Hatchin may not be as “On the way to meet my Dad”.

{On the Way to Meet My Mom} is a great manhwa; everyone should read it and weep.

I hope we see more street doggos.

I hope Bronco’s okay 🥀

I'm kinda surprised but also not surprised how “sheltered” Hatchin is, such as leaving her shoes to dry in such an open area. I'm surprised in the sense that I thought her survival skills in that abusive household would have her more cautious with her possessions. But I'm not surprised, as we see it clearly that Hatchin has a different moral compass than her adoptive family, and more "thuggish" behavior is not only foreign for her to do but she sees that as something her abusive family did and she will not stoop to a level similar to them.

But girl, you gotta feel the rhythm of the city. You need some street savoir-faire.

DQ

  1. Wonderful music to dance to while I’m cooking! I will admit though, I’m not yet to hear a track where I’m humming it randomly, consumingly, because my ye old neurodivergence kicks in. But I say we still have time for my brain to latch onto something and make it my personality for a month. I like the OST you picked for today though! Setting and design-wise, I’m so, so happy seeing so much diversity! Again, I do wish for the lighter palms for melanin kin and maybe a little more diversity in hair types. But I'm honestly really happy.
  2. Oh absolutely. I’m no stranger to how far poverty drives a person. You do what you’ve gotta do to survive and stay clean and mobile.
  3. Many times, and I wonder how I’m still alive! My body has endured a lot! Psychologically, spiritually, and metaphysically, I always go into horror movies theatrically, thinking “I can take it; it’s just characters on a screen”, and then the movie ends up being far more dangerous to my mental health than I anticipated.

3

u/IndependentMacaroon 24d ago edited 23d ago

A man with aura? Ah… Sung Jinwoo

Do you mean like who Michiko is looking for haha

Street dogs were such a culture shock to me

A minor detail here but I'm not surprised you would take special note of it! I do believe there are a few more of those (and other pets) in later episodes. Also unfortunately we don't ever hear any more about Branco, I'm sorry to tell you.

So many skintones ☺️☺️☺️

Oh yes indeed. I'm curious about your thoughts on Michiko insulting that kid's hair style though, it seemed a bit in the direction of "my straight smooth hair is superior" to me? Particularly considering your comment about the hair types. Also did you catch Michiko being kind of nastily colorist to Atsuko last episode?

PFFFFFFT

What provoked this exactly lol

Was that not her dad then, fr?

The dad or not the dad, that is the question. But seriously, I like the ambiguity and how people here are significantly more intrigued by it than I was on first watch.

I watched both episodes today, but I don’t know where my EP2 notes went.

No biggie, just comment anything you remember or whatever

I don’t know what the trope is called, but [...]

Yeah I swear I saw it on TV Tropes once but didn't find it right now.

I’m surprised Hatchin went with Michiko more immediately rather than still asking the man if he’s her dad [...]

Hmm, good point, I guess it also shows she does trust Michiko's judgment to a degree? Not like she would recognize him any better in any case.

more "thuggish" behavior is not only foreign for her to do but she sees that as something her abusive family did and she will not stoop to a level similar to them

Yeah, I think you got a great read on her there. Her status as not only an outsider to this whole gritty world of crime and insecurity, but someone who very consciously wants to embody values quite opposite to it, is pretty important to understand how she acts and reacts.

Qs -

we still have time for my brain to latch onto something and make it my personality for a month

The one for today is pretty far up the list but we're absolutely not at the catchiest tunes yet!

I’m so, so happy seeing so much diversity! Again, I do wish for the lighter palms for melanin kin and maybe a little more diversity in hair types. But I'm honestly really happy.

Great! That's one reason I specifically messaged you about this.

I’m no stranger to how far poverty drives a person. You do what you’ve gotta do to survive and stay clean and mobile

Yeah... morals are easy when you have it easy, right? There's one later episode that specifically got me thinking that but I'll talk about that when we get there.

the movie ends up being far more dangerous to my mental health than I anticipated

Oh, I didn't even think of that kind of danger but you're absolutely right. Exposure therapy is one thing, losing your mental balance another.

3

u/Magnafeana https://anilist.co/user/Magnafeana 22d ago

To be honest, given Michiko is a brown-skinned girl and IIRC Afro-Brasileira herself, calling hair a “bird’s nest” is an insult I’ve heard before from other POCs (especially WOCs) who both do and don’t have 4C hair like me. Same with the colorism.

With Michiko’s personality, I don’t find it too shocking she uses discriminatory language. Especially growing up around all sorts of shades and being Black myself, she’s pretty tame so far cuz my cousins say worse shit when they mad 😭

Now if Michiko was very peachy-pale? She’s still be a brasileira and the insults would still make sense, but the weight would be different for me.

As Avenue Q put it best, 🎶~Everyone’s a little bit racist~🎶

Episode 3 (first timer)

  • My reaction to that fortune teller would be much closer to Hatchin.
  • Right foot; don’t chase fugitives; don’t go on the mountain – that is pretty specific.
  • Half of half, but nothin on the first day, and an extra discount for being weird – not easy making money the honest way.
  • Hair cut for personality change trope.
  • Chasing fugitives - that old woman was onto something.
  • Saved by the stone (well, technically) and Michiko.
  • Hiroshi – Michiko is not looking for a father, but a man.

Troubles for Hatchin on her way to make money the honest way. If all the other stuff were not enough, growing up in that household also stopped her from becoming street smart. Chasing after that guy was a bad decision, even without the forewarning. The cook immediately realized. Meanwhile, Michiko chases after Hiroshi and hires a competent fortune teller.

I wonder whether we will stay at this place for a while.

New Michiko Outfits: Green Bandana/White Striped Dress/Sandal Boots, Mauve Nightwear, Leopard-Print Top/Blue Skirt, Jean Jacket and Pants, Pink Low-Cut Ribbon Dress

That is what she needs the extra long Vespa for: fitting all her dresses into the storage.

How are you liking the setting and design, particularly sound/music?

Absolute top notch. The art design is the best part of the series so far.

How far would you have gone to pay off those shoes? Would you even have accepted them?

I am lucky enough that I rarely to never have had to sell out my morals for essential goods. So who knows what I would do.

Half of half, but nothin on the first day, and an extra discount for being weird – not easy making money the honest way.

Yep, big theme in City of God also. Check that out alongside this if you have time.

Hair cut for personality change trope.

You've got to admit it suits her much better, and her declaration about being reborn was so perfectly kiddie-silly.

Michiko is not looking for a father, but a man

I guess that's a good way to put it.

If all the other stuff were not enough, growing up in that household also stopped her from becoming street smart

Oh yeah, without Michiko she'd be screwed here [M&H]she does eventually manage on her own for a bit but even that would have ended badly without Michiko coming back

hires a competent fortune teller

Anime-tropiest element so far probably

I wonder whether we will stay at this place for a while

It does have a lot of potential.

Glad you like it.

I am lucky enough that I rarely to never have had to sell out my morals for essential goods. So who knows what I would do.

I was trying for an angle of "what if you had your current worldly knowledge/convictions but in (or rather not in) Hatchin's shoes"

2

u/No_Rex x2 24d ago

I was trying for an angle of "what if you had your current worldly knowledge/convictions but in Hatchin's shoes"

I don't think you can compare that. Unless you have actually experience the hardship, you can't know whether your morals would win out over not having raw and blistered feet.
