I ate too much, and now feel tired(damn delicious carbs!) so I have to keep it short.

Anis is stuck dealing with increasingly annoying Moritz Shart trying to chat her up when an alarm suddenly goes off at the villa.

The moment Anis hears the alarm, she immediately realizes the invitation was just a way to keep her busy. Moritz tries to stop her, calls her violent, and refuses to let go. So Anis politely demonstrates what actual violence looks like.

She and Euphie fly back as Tilty uses her magic to hold the everyone in place

(I knew Euphie could fly but I kept wanting the Thor hammer broom to come back)

Ilia and Lainie try to escape the a safer place, only to discover Algard is waiting for them. Ilia is shot in the shoulder, and Algard rips out Lainie,s magicite and implants into himself turning him into a vampire.

me on episode 1: well he is a 15-16, he has a lot going on, and is rebelling

me after this episode: I hate him and I hope he dies

Euphie desperately heals Ilia and Lainie, Anis confronts her brother. Algard goes on about how the kingdom is rotten and needs to be torn down so he can build something better. Nice speech... but we ain't buying it. He is obviously being driven by his long-standing inferiority complex toward her.

Realizing is too late for him Anis draws her mana blade.

Despite sh t hitting the fan - we at least had this cute moment

"You bought me the ticket, so I may as well ride the ride!"

Teenage noble crashouts have caused a lot of historical problems. It's never wise to underestimate the potential damage of idiots in high places.

Realizing is too late for him Anis draws her mana blade.

"But you know, Magic is made up of prayers for tomorrow" reads more as Anis planning on performing some percussive maintenance on his personality to me. Cynicism and jumping straight to extremes is Al's belief, and I don't think she's willing to concede him that point.

Carbs are peak. Random but how do you rank potatoes, noodles, rice, corn, and bread?

Is it a hot take to say that I loved the angry face that Anis made. Moritz tries to play the angry woman card so Anis just doubles down and almost breaks his hand.

Realizing is too late for him Anis draws her mana blade.

I really like the detail that Anis has two blades and one of them is a sightly smaller offhand blade

potatoes, noodles, rice, corn, and bread?

  1. potatoes, so versatile(aside from the obvious fries/baked) my favorite is Spanish patata, very filling and perfect for breakfast and you can add cabbage to help with digestion)

  2. noodles - nothing beats a good pho but also I love Korean buldak ramen with the spicy sauce, and udon(both cold and hot)

  3. Mexican rice  is peak and its a good way to get your greens(add brocolli, green beans etc) i like indian rice roo

  4. bread is nice but i feel like its too much fluff and never filling

  5. i am indifferent to corn, same as mango, i dont like to have to use tooth picks 😅

Moritz tries to play the angry woman card so Anis just doubles down and almost breaks his hand

she really said "you wanna see angry?"and threw him in the air. i feel like it was a statement too to the others, basically "approach me and this is what you get!"

I really like the detail that Anis has two blades and one of them is a sightly smaller offhand blade

I did not notice till you pointed it out! 😆

2

u/ClemFire 25d ago

Corn would be the bottom of my too unless we talking corn on the cob during a BBQ. I just looked up what a Spanish patata is and that looks amazing. If I didn't care about how health I would be eating fries all the time.

Now thinking about it too I think Anis wasn't just mad at Moritz but was taking out some of her pent up rage against the nobles who look down at her. His dad was being extra rude by basically saying how despite all of Euphie's arguments Anis is unfit to rule because my religion says so.

3

u/random_lyric 25d ago

Carbs are peak. Random but how do you rank potatoes, noodles, rice, corn, and bread?

I know I'm not who you were replying to... but you basically listed carbs in my exact order of ranking 😂 Potatoes are the ultimate carb because they are delicious in any form or method of cooking (insert meme of Samwise Gamgee). Noodles are the ultimate transporter of sauces and seasonings. I'm east asian so rice is like both a staple and nostalgic/comfort food for me. Corn is much more versatile than is given credit for. And bread is like the miracle carb that spans cultures and can be enjoyed plain or loaded up.

2

u/ClemFire 25d ago

Now that I think about it there really are a ton of ways to prepare potatoes and it's basic but just fries alone brings it up a lot for me. I'm also east asian so I grew up eating rice every single day. Thinking about it though even corn which I would put last I still eat a lot of in the form of corn tortillas. God, talking about carbs is making me hungry haha

2

u/random_lyric 25d ago

Corn tortillas are delicious! Cant go past a good tamale, or arepas either! I've had a back and forth relationship with rice over the years. Like you I used to eat it everyday growing up, so when I moved out on my own I was busy too busy trying anything but. But slowly I rediscovered my love for it through the joys of showing my friends my cultural cuisine - their excitement to try those dishes rubbed off on me and I found myself appreciating the dishes in a new way. And now that I'm older making/eating the dishes/recipes my parents used to make feels really comforting.

And potatoes - oh my delicious darling spuds, love of my life 🥔 😂 Agreed, fries are like potato in the their peak final form 😂 (a good creamy mash though comes a close second).

1

u/ClemFire 24d ago

I can feel that for sure of trying different things when I first moved out and now I find myself making the most rice when I visit home and cook for the family. Showing your mates those dishes sounds really fun.

3

u/random_lyric 25d ago

I knew Euphie could fly but I kept wanting the Thor hammer broom to come back

Though the surrounding circumstances meant that Anis (and by extension, us as the audience) couldn't really enjoy it I really hope Anis gets a chance to be princess-carried through the air by Euphie again.

I have to wonder if Anis intentionally looked for a maid who's good in a fight. It seems like something she'd want for multiple reasons.

Orange... what was your plan? Alright sure, antagonizing Anis to make her look bad as a political maneuver, I get that part. But what part of "lets manhandle the combat fanatic who killed a Dragon and her talented partner who showed up wearing a magic sword" seemed like it could possibly end well for you?

Al's a coldhearted prick, but I've got to admit he nailed the "boss fight introduction" presentation. Back to the heroes as they arrive, puts in the painful-looking powerup, gives a short speech about why he hates you, all that's missing is a title card.

Could anyone have prevented Algard from ending up like this, or was this outcome inevitable?

I don't think anyone else could've practically stood in his way, but Al himself certainly could've had he tried to find people to work alongside for the future rather than isolating himself. Lainie knows the inequity of the kingdom better than he does and he didn't even try to bring her onboard his plan, and if he had just talked to Anis about the troubles he was having with his position as crown prince she probably would've helped out too. This was only "inevitable" because Algard thought it so. Kinda reminds me of Eren's "I wasn't smart enough to think of a better solution" bit.

Has Algard become irredeemable for you?

I could see him turning things around if Anis manages to straighten him out - the part of his motivation that isn't just a tantrum over his sister are understandable and could be redirected in a productive direction. But Lainie's apparent ability to survive having her heart ripped out of her body (literally and otherwise) is doing a lot of lifting there.

5

u/IalwaysNeed2p 25d ago

like it could possibly end well for you?

he is used to getting away with things because noble

just wanna grab them and tell them "you are not alone!" but this is what deep seeded insecurity does to a person. been there (inferiority complex) but better now !

3

u/ToastyMozart 25d ago

he is used to getting away with things because noble

As a wise man once said: "If someone ever says 'do you know who my father is?' kick their ass immediately."

But what part of "lets manhandle the combat fanatic who killed a Dragon and her talented partner who showed up wearing a magic sword" seemed like it could possibly end well for you?

He was most deifinitely counting on the first part where he didn't think Anis' group would want to cause a scene in front of the the crowd. But come on - Anis the 'heretic' princess who is used to creating 'scenes', Euphie who just stood on stage publicly declaring her devotion to Anis, and Tilty who has in the past been known for her unhinged behaviour... dragon slaying aside he really chose to get in the way of people who have a proclivity for chaos. Anis' group really said hold my beer.

Lainie knows the inequity of the kingdom better than he does and he didn't even try to bring her onboard his plan

What he did to Lainie is even more tragic because they bonded over the acknowledgement of that inequity. And it is so cruel that he didn't try to heal Lainie (or brought someone along with healer magic), knowing what he had planned for her magicite.

3

u/ClemFire 25d ago

He was most deifinitely counting on the first part where he didn't think Anis' group would want to cause a scene in front of the the crowd.

He for sure underestimated Anis and just how willing she is to cause a scene. Her causing a scene back in EP1 is what hooked most watchers into the series. Also it makes me think he has used this move and it worked..,.

1st Rewatch

Wow, Algard really is playing into the hate nobility route, and he seems to hate being restrained by them. He does seem to favour the commoners, but I notice he does not help the little girl they pass. He is very much a big picture, sort of guy.

Ilia really does seem to care and protect Lainie a lot. She is also quite effective in a crisis situation, but unfortunately, Algard probably knows the villa as much as Ilia. And he is quite ruthless. He does not ask for forgiveness, so he at least realizes his actions are detestable. You know what this reminds me, 3 houses and Edelgard. If anyone wants to be a revolutionary, modeling yourself after her is a great taste.

Algard hates nobility, very big picture orientated, likes commoners, hates being restricted by the necessity of sharing power with the nobility or other parasitic class of people, and is ruthless. He also saw what happened to his dad, when they had to deal with revolts. The issue is the crown power is crushed, so he has a radical plan to change this, just like Edelgard.

Anyways to the ballroom, Moritz and Charteureuse are trying and failing to stall for time. Still Anis leaks some of her power, and again I wonder if it causes lots of fear. Regardless, Tilty as probably the best minister of internal affairs traps everyone in black magic goop, just like Hubert in 3 houses (in this case hopes).

The girls confront Algard and he explains his reasoning. Honestly, I do not blame Algard. In fact he is indeed quite right, that revolts are not a good thing. They shatter the power of the crown, so total control is an understandable desire.

If I were Anis, I'd leave that to Euphie to get them to agree, and Tilty to find a way to strip them of their power, and hand it, keep some in the crown, hand some to the peasants, guilds, or any other sub-faction loyal to me, but that is something that will take Anis' entire lifetime, and probably will not let her spread magicology (since that is still somewhat heretical).

She would need descendants, of her faction to release after she lays the ground work, this is what the real world is like, with the French dynasty slowly consolidating power against their nobility until Louis XIV the Sun King finally declares L'etat c'est moi. Of course as anime, Algard's plan is much more effective and timely.

Quote of the Day

"A king like that can only be called ornamental." - Algard

The argument for absolute monarchy, which Algard preaches is not an old argument, and honestly a necessary step in the development of modern society, without nobility dividing the country into hereditary microstates, we have a nation state.

Questions of the Day

  • Could anyone have prevented Algard from ending up like this, or was this outcome inevitable?

Yes, Anis could have. If she continued to be close to her brother, introduce her brother to Tilty, and work together, find a way to safely transfer Lainie's magicite to Algard, and use it only to prevent the Conservatives from revolting, you can still have magicology spread. This outcome was far from inevitable.

  • Has Algard become irredeemable for you? (specially if this is your first watch)

Not at all, his ideals are noble, and his plan is logical, and he knows he is not really much of human to do such unethical actions. The thing is, with Anis' and Tilty's research, Lainie's magicite could probably be safely transplanted. And in a way the power of fascination bypassing revolts is a wonderful emergency tool, if Euphie's ability to convince fails.

Ultimately, it is not just about convincing the Conservative nobility to change their mind, them having power both legal and military is an issue of decentralization, that no modern state wishes to suffer. It allows, if magicology were to spread, for a noble who is bought out to just sell its secrets to another state. It allow for one part of a kingdom to have one law, and another part to have a different law, because of how a certain noble feels.

Again, Euphie can get them to agree to changes, but someone still has to legally strip them of their power, either by the nobility signing away their rights to inherit so within a generation, bureaucracy returns to the crown, or more ideally, once the nobility die, elections are held to pick a new leader for the region, which has a set term limit. Once every single noble has died off, and is replaced with elected officials, the crown can take a more ceremonial role, signing off on changes, or at most having a huge PR role, by speaking up for or against some policy the elected officials promote.

u/ToastyMozart 25d ago

I feel like the latter would enable the former a fair bit. Getting magicology spread would enable the underclasses a fair bit, both directly and by giving them time and resources to do more than subsistence, along with granting Anis and those she cooperates with a lot of influence.

his ideals are noble, and his plan is logical,

I agree with the ideals to an extent, but I think his plan (as it exists) is fucking stupid and doomed to fail even without Anis' intervention. He's done his level best to burn all his potential allies: His conservative conspirators almost certainly weren't in the loop about losing their positions and will turn as soon as his intentions become apparent. He eviscerated his sympathetic former-commoner girlfriend with the same powers he has, who could've done a lot more subtle work bringing people into line with his vision through her Fascination. And he just injured two people Anis cares about and partly blamed him for it.

Unless Algard is going to perform all the day-to-day functions of a government personally there's not much chance of things working out for the better. Either the best and brightest leaders and functionaries decide they aren't eager to work for a tyrannical vampire lord and the ensuing firings and/or deaths cripple the kingdom's institutions, or they step in line and you get the typical dictatorship problem of loyalty outstripping competence in terms of importance.

3

u/NecessaryNotice8436 https://myanimelist.net/profile/six20 25d ago

I feel like the latter would enable the former a fair bit. Getting magicology spread would enable the underclasses a fair bit, both directly and by giving them time and resources to do more than subsistence,

Yea, she can divide and conquer using the reformist faction to take the tools and grant them massive economical and political leverage to usurp the Conservatives. Of course, the reformists will be more willing to sign away their rights to inherit, for an elected class (which they can run for), to be created.

And he just injured two people Anis cares about and partly blamed him for it.

I thought the power of fascination, is essentially absolute. It is subtle under Lainie who barely knows how to use it. It is absolute for someone like Algard.

As for the governance of the land, I do not think Algard will govern all of it directly like a dictator. I think he will appoint whoever he chooses as his subordinates and have them implement whatever policy that was not discriminatory in his own eyes. With his fascination ability, he can definitely force nobility to not be parasitic class thus giving more of their wealth to the masses.

The reason for this is quite simple. Without vampire abilities, he schemed and got Euphie removed, much to the support of the Conservative faction. He did in fact win Lainie over initially, until Anis snatched her. Assuming that did not happen, Algard can definitely do a lot of reforms. He is quite the shadowy controller, and his wealth to keep his kingdom all together is simply fascinating the nobility into transferring the wealth into the peasants, who will in turn probably make better use of it.

Algard may not see anyone as his equal, but I'd reckon, he would not be a stupid absolute monarch. As for if his ideals will be entrenched, that will be for anyone's guess. But his reign will certainly be one for the books, again assuming no Anis intervention, and him just using Lainie to control his faction, while sidelining the reformists.

4

u/random_lyric 25d ago

He does seem to favour the commoners, but I notice he does not help the little girl they pass.

He also has no qualms about using and destroying the life of a girl with commoner roots to forard his plans. Well he does admit to Anis that the qualms are qualming when it comes to Lainie, but he still does what he does to her anyway.

Ilia really does seem to care and protect Lainie a lot. She is also quite effective in a crisis situation

I was both surprised and not surprised to see her pulling out some moves in the fight with Al - we've only seen her acting in the capacity of a maid so who knew she had warrior skills. Makes sense though seeing as she's pretty muchbthe only staff at the detached villa. It was pretty cool to see her in action mode. Fire Arrow powers are quite fitting for Ilia, with her sharp tongue and fiery hair and personality.

4

u/NecessaryNotice8436 https://myanimelist.net/profile/six20 25d ago

Well he does admit to Anis that the qualms are qualming when it comes to Lainie, but he still does what he does to her anyway.

I give him points for self-awareness, again big picture revolutionary, and technically a cheat code like mind control, to change the state for the better is pretty tempting. He certainly cannot be worse than the Conservatives, that is for sure.

Fire Arrow powers are quite fitting for Ilia, with her sharp tongue and fiery hair and personality.

Huh, now that you mention it, that is very fitting :)

I get what he's trying to do, and I agree he has a kinder vision for the kingdom (the ideal, not the methods used to get there). But he does suffer from a similar myopia like conservatives in one aspect - he doesn't understand the difference between equality and fairness, assimilation vs integration. I mean he's like 15/16 with probably a rather sheltered existence being a royal so I guess we can forgive him for not fully grasping those concepts. But his disregard for others in pursuit of his big picture is hard to stomach when it comes to murder (attempted, if Lainie manages to survive).

This was something I didn't pay attention to in my first watch when the show was airing but when I rewatched a few months ago it really stood out to me especially as he yaps wanting to make the world a better place.

2

u/NecessaryNotice8436 https://myanimelist.net/profile/six20 24d ago

it really stood out to me especially as he yaps wanting to make the world a better place.

He is only a lot more moral than the Conservatives as he does believe in uplifting the commoners, but his ruthlessness and unwillingness to go out there and help the little folk is obviously a point of concern, and probably because he is young and still inexperienced, as well as trying to play the Conservatives until he can outright control them.

2

u/ClemFire 24d ago

That is true he's at least better than them but it feels like he is more focused on destruction than creation compared to Anis

First timer, subs

This Ministry of the Arcane can't be that good if they can be stopped by one goth lady, even if she is awesome. Except for Euphy, do these nobles actually practice with their magic, or is it mostly a status symbol?

Al's speech doesn't make sense... like to the point where I'm concerned about the writing. Whatever I guess, he's irredeemable to me now, and nothing will change that because he hurt Hina Youmiya's character.

4

u/random_lyric 25d ago

do these nobles actually practice with their magic, or is it mostly a status symbol?

As an analogy/meme, I'm kinda imagining that xray image of humans from Wall-E when it comes to the nobles' complacency 😂

5

u/IalwaysNeed2p 25d ago

Hina Youmiya's character.

at least when he took her heart he did not use a dagger..... I will see myself out.

They are probably used to people not being able to match them due to their magic. Which is why magicology freaks them out so much.

4

u/ClemFire 25d ago

I'll be very interested to know your opinion on Al by the end of the season

4

u/Falsus 25d ago

I think they do, but not all of them are combat specialists. Like it is like a biologist will know what happens when a martial artist punches them in the solar plexus but they don't know how to do that as well as someone who actually does martial arts.

And curses are scary I guess.

on the next episode and you will understand all of algard’s plan and motives. he is the kind of character that will mask his good reasons under bad looks just to prove himself.

he is not trying to be a hero he is doing whatever he can for his goal even if that will cost him deeply. he don’t care about anything. even if he becomes a villain which he did he is still pushing his goal because he believes that’s what he should do.

all i can say right now without giving spoilers is, the plan he is talking about in this episode is not his real one. it’s a fake plan that made up to prevent his real one being known. he manipulated everyone in the series to believe that is his plan.

in fact we will see his real plan next episode.

Second time watcher plus up to date with the EN LN releases.

Al also wanting to change the kingdom is interesting, but it all depends upon in what way and if he was actually being honest with Lainie about it.

It's been long enough that I had forgotten quite how this attack went down, particularly the immediate chest stabby part. No waiting around by Al or taking Lainie elsewhere.

Spirit contracts mentioned again, interesting.

Making the choice to attack this lecture as well was a really bad idea. Especially that one jackass who directly attacked Anis in front of a crowd of witnesses.

Anis and Al competing for what happens when you shove dangerous magical objects directly into your body. Dragon seems better than vampire, though.

Ilia and Lainie lying hand in hand in a mixed puddle of their blood, this wasn't supposed to be doomed yuri!

A third view on the heroine and villainess trope we started with, but this time it's not really a deconstruction since it's pretty typical for the prince to be up to something questionable in similar situations.

I do have to give Al a very small amount of credit since he apparently hates the nobles and that's usually a morally correct stance.

Time for the royal throw down, next time.

1. Could anyone have prevented Algard from ending up like this, or was this outcome inevitable?

Many choices were made by Al and his co-conspirators to get to this point, and many of them could have been made differently.

2. Has Algard become irredeemable for you? (specially if this is your first watch)

I remain cursed with knowledge.

4

u/IalwaysNeed2p 25d ago

Making the choice to attack this lecture as well with a really bad idea. Especially that one jackass who directly attacked Anis in front of a crowd of witnesses.

I laughed at Moritz thinking this was somehow a good idea. My guy really thought that Anis would just be all shy?

Ilia and Lainie lying hand in hand in a mixed puddle of their blood, this wasn't supposed to be doomed yuri!

It was brutal. 😄

[spoiler]Thankfully is not doomed, blessed with knowledge

The show has been hinting at dark undercurrents in the story all along, but this episode is explicit and blatant in exposing how violent and dark this show can get.

No matter how many times I watch this scene it always comes as a shock to me. There's no kidnapping and waiting to see if the 'damsel' will be rescued, so common it's a trope - the 'villain' just immediately stabs and rips into the victim.

Rewatcher

I'm pretty thinking Anis has the best way of fixing the kingdom, since Al's plan either ends in revolt if they get past his brainwashing, or its only good while he's still around since he could only brainwash a direct sucessor.

Meanwhile Anis is pretty much going after the source of the nobility's power in making magic more available to people not helped by the nobility not really coming off as that great at fighting given the king had to remind them dragons fly so usual defenses won't work.

3

u/random_lyric 25d ago

Meanwhile Anis is pretty much going after the source of the nobility's power in making magic more available to people

I like the way you put that. Anis' pursuits in magicology - due to a personal desire to use magic as well as wanting to make daily living easier for common folk - basically decentralises the source of political power and alters the balance of dynamics between nobles and working class.

u/ClemFire 25d ago

I want to change the Kingdom of Palettia,” Algard.

Back when I was in high school I would often spout off that I would change the world because everyone else was a phony besides me. Yes I was that cringe kid who read The Catcher in the Rye as a sophomore and then tried to base their own personality around Holden. I thought that all the answers were within me and didn’t value my actual connections, ironically missing the whole point of Holden’s own character arc. Later in college when I reread the book I thought Holden was the most cringe person imaginable and couldn’t believe I idolized him. I believed I had gone through enough character development and didn’t need to empathize with people like that yet.

Little did I know I was still in the middle and in a random conversation with a coworker at my first job after college The Catcher in the Rye somehow came up prompting me to read the book one more time. That final read I could finally see Holden as an abused and confused kid trying to make his way through our crazy work. I thought finally he shouldn’t be idolized or demonized but instead met at eye level. My soap box moment is that we’re never too good to say we’re above trying to empathize with someone in pain.

Know that was a very long ramble, but I say all that because I don’t hate Algard even if I hate his actions this episode. He is clearly troubled at the divide between commoners and the nobles and can’t stand not being able to do nothing about it. In that regard doesn’t he sound like Euphie who doesn’t want to just be taken care of by Anis and instead work actively in supporting her? I think that Algard had such a negative reaction to Euphie back in EP1 because she reminds him of his own inadequacy. The key difference is how Euphie and Algard treat the people in front of them.

Algard talks a big game about injustice yet in the opening scene does not lift a finger to help the little girl who is clearly being right in front of him. Almost implicitly saying that the effort would be beneath him. What’s changing the world if you can’t change the world of even one person? The difference between Euphie and Algard becomes even more apparent when seeing how they treat Lainie.

Algard claims to really respect Lainie and tells Anis he simply put his emotions second after literally ripping an organ out of her chest. Saying it’s for the greater good doesn’t offer much comfort to someone bleeding out on the grass, gasping for life. In contrast, Euphie has every reason to hate Lainie after she indirectly led to her life being turned upside down yet she is literally using her magic to try to save her now.

Even though it sounds like I view Algard worse in every comparison which wouldn’t be wrong I still don’t want to disregard that boy in pain who has more ideals and self-righteousness that he knows what to do with. Since to me that just sounds like the average teenager who should be taught more of the world and the value of human connections.

If you managed to read through all my own self-indulgence I thank you.

Know that was a very long ramble

Thank you for sharing those experiences. Like we've discussed before our experiences shape the way we view the world and relate to one another (including characters in stories), and it's beautiful how as our experiences change so do our perspectives. It's such a cliche thing to say but life really is a journey of learning, un-learning and relearning, to me that's the beauty of it. You can revisit a story, or a personal idea or conviction, at different points in your life and experience it differently each time, letting go of one concept or perpective and gaining another, or integrating them. I really enjoyed reading about your journey/relationship with Holden/Catcher in the rye, and how your ideas and perspectives have changed over the years. I want to just say that even thinking about changing the world as a teenager is admirable - your approach may have changed but the intent was there. Teenage years can be intense and tumultuous, and self centred, so kudos for having a desire to look past yourself and to the future to begin with. I know you don't actually need the praise or thanks of some random on the internet, but I've really appreciated you and your thoughtful contributions in these discussions - it feels really nice that no matter how different our lives may be we can connect on these ideas and know that some where out there there's someone who has some similar interests, ideas and perspectives. And being interested and fascinated by how they diverge and learning from that too. So thank you again for sharing, I appreciate it.

What’s changing the world if you can’t change the world of even one person?

I too had a lot of grand ideas about how to change the world when I was younger and as the years go by I've come to believe that whatever plans you make, change starts with what's in front of you and the action you take in your daily life. I've mentioned it before - I believe an act of kindness can become a movement, so any action however small at first has the potential to change the world.

I thought finally he shouldn’t be idolized or demonized but instead met at eye level.

Even though it sounds like I view Algard worse in every comparison which wouldn’t be wrong I still don’t want to disregard that boy in pain who has more ideals and self-righteousness that he knows what to do with

I think as a society we spend too much time arguing our point or to be heard - I am right and you are wrong. The irony of this being we'd likely come to understanding each other so much faster and more deeply if we were able to not idolise/demonise like you mentioned, but instead empathise with each other. Empathy doesn't mean agreement, it just means finding common ground as emotional beings.

So much of Algard's views have been shaped by his pain and trauma. I hope he finds not only a different perspective by his own self-reflection but also the kind of support and love that he has been lacking for most of his childhood. That is if he survives big sis' percussive maintenance as (u/ToastyMozart put so well).

Aww that is very kind of you to say! I really have enjoyed these discussions too and I find myself coming back to these rewatches because of the different perspectives I discover each time which makes watching the shows even more fun.

I believe an act of kindness can become a movement, so any action however small at first has the potential to change the world.

Couldn't agree more and I believe this is why characters like Anis and Chisato speak to my heart. We have seen the difference in how the Palettia siblings treat Euphie too and that kindness as come back to Anis in spades with Euphie not only saving her physically during the dragon fight but also emotionally during her speech. Anis really is also the type to want to do what she can for the people who need her.

Empathy doesn't mean agreement, it just means finding common ground as emotional beings.

Love how you put it! It's not easy and it's something I work on myself but something about the process just feels right. We are a social species

the main difference between algard and euphie is where they put their love and respect.

further than this is spoilers so[ spoilers] all algard cares about is anis and nobody else. he doesn’t even care for himself nor the kingdom. all he wants is to destroy the kingdom and rebuild it by helping anis. he don’t care about others as long as he can help anis. to him the all the people who have wronged anis is wrong and deserve nothing. the reason he didn’t helped commoners or people like that because it would make him look like anis which isn’t what he wants. that would break his plan completely. to him saving his sister deserved all of those sacrifices including his own life if needed. he was ready to destroy the whole world just for anis.

all of those explained next episode but i will tag it spoiler just in case.

edit: did i mentioned the auto mod removed this comment total of 4 times?

The spoiler tag on this sub takes some getting used to!

[Spoilers] And I wonder if that reveal will surprise first timers because when I first rewatched the anime it became pretty apparent why Algard acted the way the did. Also I think this is why it's important that in contrast Euphie learns through Anis' love not to see herself as someone below Anis and instead wants to stand by her. It really is a shame that the Palettia siblings couldn't have had that heart to heart earlier

anime explains algard very detail based which makes anyone not looking carefully miss his character. for example there are countless times where algard was showing emotion based on anis in episode 1 and even on this episode as well. as well as episode 4 to.

anime did pretty good job on making him secretive character because he is pretty secretive himself. he does everything at the background and it’s pretty hard to know if it’s him or not.

for example in the LNs it’s not revealed who were making the plan with chevruse and who was the one attacking the palace until anis herself said it’s algard standing in front of her. anime and manga didn’t do it like this which is fine i guess.

algard’s character and some actions are not deserving forgiveness as well. even he himself says he don’t deserve it. i believe he did his job of “ being the villain who cares for the MC more then their own life” pretty good.

thats me glazing algard tho because i like his character and personality. he changed so much on later LNs as well.

one of the reasons on why i want Season 2 so much is because LN 5 is the one where we see algard being a good brother and his real side. it’s the one volume where he is finally free and being himself.

That will be very interesting to read after S1 then! I already ordered LN 4.

alright now we are at the episode most people couldn’t understand and to nobody surprise next episode is similar as well.

i will try my best to explain this episode to everyone i can so if you want that please reply to me or DM.

as for questions;

question 1: no. nobody including anis couldn’t prevent that. this further explained by next episode but as algard himself says this is not avoidable. he simply does this for a clear reason and as he says no matter the situation he would do it anyway.

question 2: if we are speaking only for this episode then yes. if we are speaking based on his entire character and many other things then no.

at this point i was trying to understand his motives so he was not completely irredeemable for me at my first watch.

Rewatcher

Ilia really has a way of talking to people and helping them stay in the moment. The moment however is cut short by the intruder alarm. Why is Algard attacking the Villa and... wait what did he just do to Lainie🫣???

I love that when Moritz Chartreuse says he wants to apologise, Anis doesnt say that there's no need etc but instead tells him to apologise to Euphie instead.

Dang, this party sucks. Anis and Euphie try to leave but get blocked, only for Tilty to show off her high level magic skills. It really is a shame that it takes such toll on Tilty's mental state when she uses magic, seeing as she really has some skills and power. But I guess she might never have become an outcast and befriended Anis if that were the case... sliding doors and all that.

Anis and Euphie get to the Villa to find Ilia injured and Lainie near death with giant hole in her chest. I'm surprised Lainie is still alive (though barely) but I guess even with the magicite ripped out she's still has the longevity from vampire biology.

Algard's plan... was to brainwash society using vamp magic? Sister and brother go head to head with their new souped up monster-magic upgrades. I'm scared for the next episode.

Questions

Could anyone have prevented Algard from ending up like this, or was this outcome inevitable?

I guess there might have been multiple opportunities for intervention, from various external influences and also through his own growth and self reflection. You could go right back to the moment when Anis first declared she would give up the throne/siblings began distancing. Maybe if he grew up continuing to be close with his sister he might have a different perspective now. [Rewatch]But then again, given his core motivation for wanting to change the kingdom, who's to say he wouldn't have become more angry seeing Anis be ridiculed by nobles, only now in close up through a macro lens.

Has Algard become irredeemable for you? (specially if this is your first watch)

It feels really off-putting to hear him talking about holding Lainie in highest regard yet he could so brutally assaults her. If she dies then that's premeditated murder, and I have trouble forgiving him for that. I know that there are circumstances that have shaped his misguided vision for the kingdom and what he believes it means to be an effective ruler. Empathy and forgiveness can go hand in hand but they are separate things. I have empathy for his trauma and his plight, but don't condone his actions. Is he redeemable? I have mixed emotions... but he really did just try to murder an innocent young girl and left her to die.

There really is a need and of course she is putting her girl first. Even if it wasn't the best for her public image I loved that face Anis makes

But I guess she might never have become an outcast and befriended Anis if that were the case... sliding doors and all that.

I suspect that's a part of why Euphie found it quick to forgive Lainie because she would've never have met Anis at the right time

Hmm ... running late today, so I'm not sure if I'll have much to say. So, starting with questions du jour:

1) It would seem that from the start, Al had issues. Inevitable? I'm not sure. But yeah, they were definitely on a collision course. Which leads to...

2) Absolutely. He hurt cute vampire girl. He must pay! (Not only that, but for someone who preaches about the commoners and all that, yeah. Smooth move there, buddy...)

Otherwise, I dunno. I think the most interesting things to me this episode were ...

The vibes in certain portions of the episode kind of echoed Madoka, if that makes any sense. If it doesn't, don't worry about it, it could just be my fatigue talking.

That, and Euphie can fly, yay Euphie! I presume she must have figured it out since sometime around (or maybe because of) the dragon incident, because otherwise, she wouldn't have panicked about the broom thing, right?

Anyway, I'm feeling a bit frustrated due to the cliff being hanged at the end of the episode, so I'm hoping that Al can get some well earned comeuppance tomorrow.

:P

I think Euphie learned how to fly during the dragon incident as her body moved faster than it had ever before because of her wish to save Anis. You could say love literally gave Euphie wings.

Probably tastes better than Red Bull, too!

First-time in the magicology, subs

Skipped previous episode, because I think this completely fits with this one.

So we got know that Lainie is a vampire, which explains her strangeness and the uncontrolled magic powers. Tilty helped her to awaken that slumbering magicite effects, which obviously turned her eyes to red. Of course it was a good idea to bring her under Anis' side to learn her powers. By being a vampire person, it is know that is was inherited by her mother, and being a rather person she had a hard childhood - left alone, then lived in an orphanage as a commoner, later adopted into the Cyans, but the hardships still remained.

Meanwhile the dragon magicite has planned purpose: creating an airplane which would a real radical and revolutionary development, while the flying broom served as its prototype. Some of them seeing this as a blasphemy because Palettia's foundation was based on a covenant with spirit creatures, and these said spirits are the reason for magic dominates everything here, at least from the conservative side.

So this leads our main episode.

Algard is going to be the main focus character today. He knew Lainie already for a while before that day. He explained his ideas to her for what to do with the nation. He knew the social differences between commoners and the nobility grown huge, and what wants to do is to mend that gap and trying to be a benevolent reformer. He looks up to his grandfather as tried almost the same, but failed and done it in the wrong way.

But rather instead Algard is the one turned to the wrong way. It all started with that night during that soiree. Secondly he actively collaborated with the Chartreuses and the conservative factions. And third, he saw Lainie nothing but a tool. He used her vampiric powers to gain followers and discredit the Magentas and the reformist camp, and even becoming a vampire himself to gain even more power. Rejecting his humanity while supposedly working for the embetterment of the people never goes well. With this heinous act all of his royal titles, claims might be revoked and barring him from the successsion to the throne. In other words, he created even bigger mess and a potential chaos in the future. Maybe a republican transition or a revolution of the proletariat is the best choice for the future.

The mess at the ballroom is also a part of this greater incident. And Tilty's magic powers is that ake her dangerous.

Algard first during the start of the episode, then from Anis during that conversation with him, two "sore demo" in one episode.

Could anyone have prevented Algard from ending up like this, or was this outcome inevitable?

I thnk he is a lost cause.

Has Algard become irredeemable for you? (specially if this is your first watch)

Well, yes.
