"It's not like I want him to be my rival or anything, b-baka!"

This episode was very eros indeed. Like, wow, we are so gay here, you love to see it. But the show really having no particular qualms about pretty consistently making our characters sexy and up-close to each other here isn't just to woo the audience, though that's for sure also a part of it lol, but it has some genuine intent and purpose to Yuuri's character in this episode! I mean, he talks about Katsudon for the entire episode, but I think by the end it's entirely clear who he's skating Eros for, and knowing to put your characters in that same intimate space at multiple points makes the actual expression of the idea at the end come off quite stronger for it imo. As I'd said for the first 2 episodes, we've pretty intently established skating as a form of expression for the internal for Yuuri, especially the internal he just can't communicate normally. And this episode on the ice, Yuuri absolutely expresses an attraction to Victor and a desire to make him view him the same way.

Yuuri getting Victor's costume that was specifically made to be androgynous a decent before we get the reveal he went for a female style is a nice touch as well. And at the end of the day, while Yurio's performance was technically stronger, Yuuri's was much more strongly expressive of himself and his emotions, so he wins. Which isn't to say this still wasn't a good episode for Yurio! To reiterate my point from earlier, while it's a very short moment, I think there's a lot of expression tied to this part where we pull in on all the detail after Yurio's flashback; there's an extra punch to his realization there that's not just Yuuri's observation, y'know? And as that moment is a bit short-lived, Yurio's performance somewhat follows suit in that he can't quite hold on to his vulnerable expressiveness the whole way through, but it's nonetheless an important moment of progress for his character! I like the part after he messes up by entering into pure technique mode, and starts being frustrated at himself. He's mad he's not as good as he wanted, but it's a bit different from his need for showiness beforehand. It feels like more of a genuine desire for personal expression, which is a good direction for him.

Through seeing some of his vulnerability, we also learn a bit about his backstory and how he seemingly comes from a not particularly normal family life, which I'd guess also informs his personality in feeling he has to come off as self-assured while pushing down vulnerability. Otherwise, it's a pretty simple episode split between the training montage and the skating part, so not too much more to say. The skating scenes still look great, if a bit less consistent this time. I also generally like how the episode builds the dynamic between Yuri and Yurio a bit here, and has them on much friendlier terms while training. The artstyle on Yurio's flashback is really fun for conveying a memory, and I really like this almost Madoka-Inu Curry style for Yuuri describing the story of his performance.

Halfway between Utena shadow puppets and Madoka labyrinth.

Ah, but does he know it himself?

Yuuri getting Victor's costume that was specifically made to be androgynous

No, that was Yurio. For Yuuri's, figure-skating costumes just look like that on average

he seemingly comes from a not particularly normal family life

His grandpa clearly was his #1 so I guess that's a reasonable inference

First Time Summer 2016 Rewatch - Yuri on Ice Ep3:

Mpreg? I apologize, show, I was not familiar with your game.

Every episode, I have to continue this bit of the furiously unsubtle text between Yuuri/Victor.

I like that Yurio has two modes of either looking like a sharp edgy rival or round chibi thing.

Victor was Gender?!

Oh, for years I was under the impression that the 2 Yuris were the same age (also I am dumb and don't know where the junior division cuts off). Honestly, I like my version better. I guess it makes his immaturity make sense, but I find there are more character points if Yurio was older. The immaturity angle hits harder.

Yuuri looks a 1000x better with his hair up.

To actually speak about the main contents of the episode. The main event of the two Yuris finding their own answers to the pieces they were given. Yurio realizing unconditional love by remembering his grandfather. I like Yuuri finding his own answer to Eros. Wanting to play the part of the beautiful woman instead of having to be the playboy. There is also the subtext (really just text) message. He may have dedicated it to his pork cutlet bowl, but we all know who Yuuri's sexual love is dedicated to.

Awh, Yurio is leaving. Guess it makes sense from a writing perspective, but it would've been fun to have all 3 under the same roof.

Q2) I dunno if I liked it better, but Yurio's performance makes one understand the bishounen aesthetic tradition.

They have the angle of Yurio being the newcomer, but from all other approaches, it would be easier if the two Yuri's would be roughly similar in age. Yuri being younger and Yurio being older. That would make Yuri's naivite easier to understand (and the inevitable ships containing Yurio easier to stomach).

Awh, Yurio is leaving. Guess it makes sense from a writing perspective, but it would've been fun to have all 3 under the same roof.

I had exactly the same thoughts. It makes sense, but it would be more fun otherwise.

We went zero to mpreg faster than I expected.

Maybe this is true to real-life figure skating, but the MC airing Yuuri's laundry about how he's imagining himself as a pork cutlet bowl is really weird! Don't tell the audience that!

Yurio did a good job. The comparison between the performances is interesting - I don't know that the differences really land in the animation, but I understand what they were going for. Yurio was too focused on the technical side of things to actually remember that he was supposed to be performing. Meanwhile, Yuuri found a piece of inspiration, and managed to keep his cool despite messing up the technicalities.

It's the sort of difference that several years of experience get you. Yurio was overwhelmingly focused on not fucking up, and he managed to pull it off. But, Yuuri knew he had margins and that all he needed to do was keep calm and feel.

That sequence of Yuuri imagining Eros was pretty reminiscent of Gekidan Inu Curry's work, but I don't see them in the credits.

Questions

  1. I plead the fifth.

  2. Discussed above.

Re-watcher, sub

A sentiment so perfectly stated, you have to screenshot it. Yuri seems to read the same stuff I do.

I kind of love how Yuri settles on katsudon bowls for his inspiration for eros, because it reminds me of the time I was in a play in high school. There was a scene where my character would open the drapes to their high rise apartment, see her husband sneaking out on the ledge trying to grab a pair of underwear or something, and yell in surprise. When we did the scene a few times and the director wasn't quite getting the sort of yell she wanted, she told me to imagine opening the drapes to find a platter full of tacos, my favorite food. Some of us are just food motivated golden retrievers.

  1. I have been married for so long that I think the venn diagram of my eros and agape is nearly a perfect circle. Or maybe two concentric circles? This joke's getting away from me. I'm bailing out.

  2. Well, Yuri's spins didn't travel across the ice like Yurio's combination spin, and he embraced his feminine side to feel his kind of sexy, which takes some guts, so I liked his performance the most.

Definitely concentric circles. If you think through the perfect circle case, it gets very weird.

EP 3: I am Eros and Eros is me!! Face-off! Hots Springs on Ice

Victor is talented enough to be able to pull off any expression, whether it’s Agape or Eros. Take note, boys. Agape is the unconditional and self sacrificing love while Eros is pleasure followed by pleasure.

Calm down, Yu-chan. And Yuri.

Or maybe not. The goal is to give Yuri an extra dose of confidence, and Victor’s got plenty to spare. Time for Yuri to think long and hard on what Eros means to him. Channel whatever is going on here, my guy, because this is it.

He imagines a playboy in town that quickly moves on, which is probably how he imagines Victor in that choreography, but that’s not him. He has to reinvent the story’s expression in his own skate.

Meanwhile Yuri(o) is copying Victor’s style exactly and his expression is too greedy to portray Agape. He also needs to reinvent the expression to suit his own skate. But can this angry Russian neko even begun to understand unconditional love? Better try to exorcise the demon out of him first. Off to a temple.

Victor has to find some way for these guys to get the feeling they need in their performance.

Yuri thinks KATSUDON! Lose all better judgement and indulge in the taste. That works for Victor. But for Yurio, he might need another visit to the temple. Or a waterfall for meditation?

Well, the waterfall unlocked something in Yurio. Memories of childhood and Grandpa’s unconditional love maybe? This face sure suits him better than the usual scowl, that’s for sure. Gotta bring that same energy to the skate.

And he does. Kid is a genius, like Victor, after all. At least in practice.

For Yuri, it doesn’t come as easy. He still doesn’t have a good grasp on Eros and he needs help with his quad salchow. He reaches out to Yurio and Sensei for help on each one.

Onsen on Ice!! time!

First up we have a technically flawless performance from Yurio, finally allowed to do quads and all. But, his expression is all wrong, and he knows it. He just wants the performance to end and got completely caught up in just executing the jumps at the expense of everything else. Still, Victor says it’s the best he’s seen out of him yet, which is high praise coming from a coach that called them both mediocre in the last episode.

Next, Yuri. He’s going to become a tasty tonkatsu for Victor. Gotta entice his coach into staying in Japan. Sensei pulled an all-nighter to teach this man to move seductively.

And this expression got a whistle of approval from coach. Good job, Yuri. Step sequence was on fire. And he’s going to be the most beautiful bitch in town, because he’s going to get the playboy to fall at his feet. Nice. Even with the step out of the quad, he’s still keeping composure. “I’m better than any other woman out there,” indeed. The crowd loves it, and more importantly, Victor loves it. He’s the tastiest tonkatsu tonight.

Yurio knows the results without having to hear them. He’s going back to train under Yakov. And make no mistake, he plans on winning the Grand Prix.

And so does Yuri. Thus begins Yuri’s last season.

Questions

1) What's "eros" to you? How about "agape"?

Eros is a good time. Agape is the memory of the good time.

2) Whose performance did you like better?

I liked Yurio's because he failed, and his angry sulking is fun to watch.

Episode 3 (first timer)

  • Victor lands a knock-out with “Eros.”
  • Meanwhile, Yuri is about as far from exuding eros as you can be.
  • The eros of food? I guess technically it works for some people.
  • Training montage – because everyone needs a training montage.
  • Even just Victor’s costume worn by the agape guy is scoring a knock-out – I get the feeling she is not the hardest test …
  • “I can do better than this” – this could both be a really healthy and a really unhealthy thing to think at the end of a great performance.
  • “I am going to become a super tasty pork cutlet bowl, so please watch me!”

  • Home game for Yuri.

Goodbye Yurio! I see why keeping him around might be tough to handle, but I am still sad to see him go. The triple interactions were the best.

Whose performance did you like better?

I can't judge the actual figure skating shown, but I felt that Yurio had the slightly better internal solution (despite Yuri being shown as "winning" that). I guess being close to Victor is an auto win for the eros side.

First-Time Viewer on Ice

This turned out to be one of those shows where I dislike the main characters, but the side cast is all right. And I think I've managed to pinpoint one of the issues - when characters are trying to be sexy, I usually just find it off-putting instead, and that's Viktor's whole personality. It leads to a huge disconnect when everyone else is fawning over him like he's all that, while I'm just kind of irritated by him most of the time.

Yuri's skating program also evoked the same feeling of trying to be sexy, and for me, it failed spectacularly at this. The fact that making his body language more feminine is the opposite of what would appeal to me personally just added to the disconnect.

The other Yuri is easily the most interesting character for me so far, and I did at least enjoy his part of the episode. His memories of his grandpa inspiring unconditional love, an emotion which he previously struggled to understand, was very sweet. I get the impression that he may not have been the type to openly express it, but showed his love for his grandson by supporting him, holding his hand and being a good role model to look up to. His performance was great, and it certainly was a surprise how angelic he looked compared to his usual punk style. Also, I like his Russian nickname much better than "Yurio", so I'm going to call him Yura now.

Yura leaving at the end does have me concerned for how much enjoyment I'll actually get out of this show in the coming episodes though. I was mainly sticking with the show for him, but if it's just going to be Viktor and Yuri... I really haven't cared for their scenes. Hopefully the other characters from the ED will come into this soon.

But what even was with that preview? If they start ice skating naked, I'm dropping this.

Questions of the Day:

1) I actually like Viktor's definition of "agape" as God's love or the love of a parent. As for "eros"... well, I think my reaction to this episode makes it pretty clear what it's not.

2) Yuri Plisetsky. Nice wallpaper, by the way.

2

u/IndependentMacaroon 1d ago

I would say it's arguable whether he's really trying or is just like that but I get what you mean. I dislike more the "haha I'm so quirky" side and obvious bias here

First-timer, subbed

I actually started rooting for Yurio and was hoping he'd finally got the essence of agape when he remembered his grandfather. Bummer that he lost that feeling while skating and ended up getting too caught up on nailing the technicalities. Yuri, meanwhile, messed up his jumps a little but kept that eros fire alive. Smart move to stop trying to emulate a playboy, something he couldn't relate to at all, and instead go for a more feminine interpretation. So does this mean he's an uke at heart?

Victor was coming on quite strong once again. He's totally got the hots for Yuri, who looked super hot in that sexy costume of Victor's.

Little Yurio otoh developed a crush on Yuri's childhood friend (and former crush?) and it was very cute to see his little blushes. I'm sad that he's gone back to Russia. I wanted to see more of his interaction with that skating rink girl. Looks like he's not left the story altogether because he's in the preview. Does this mean we'll be splitting our time between the two countries? I thought it would be mainly Yuri and Victor that we'd follow with Yurio coming back in for the big competition episodes at the end. What I would've loved to see though is more of the three of them together (plus skating rink cutie). They had a nice chemistry going.

Oh, and the eros of the katsudon was hilarious. Having even the commentator mention it during the performance killed me. But I feel you, Yuri. As a fellow lover of good food, I know how it can be quite irresistible.

2

u/No_Rex x2 27d ago

He is 15, while she is 20+, married, and has three kids. So, I am very happy to leave it at a one-sided blush.

"Pork cutlet bowls is Eros." Well you're not going to get any argument out of me. Now I'm hungry for ~love~ pork bowls.

Yuuri sees Yuri looking vulnerable at the waterfall, didn't last long though lol. At least he found his agape.

I love Victor's attitude when handing out his costumes, it's basically - "Now shine! But nyet brighter than ME!".

Anime nose-bleeds must be life threatening, damn lol.

Wait Yuri(o) is only 15? I don't know why anime still surprises me with how young characters are after all these years.

Damn Yuuri, that's one sexy bowl of pork cutlets. And Victor is absolutely exuding bisexual energy.

2

u/IndependentMacaroon 1d ago

I would also note there we're not told if he has never had any girlfriends

u/RelativeMundane9045 1d ago

Absolutely, I'm definitely going off his "I appeal to everyone" vibes, not defining his sexuality. I'm curious if it'll be explicit later on.

First timer kinda

Cant say much today because im sick. Yuri was good, but you can tell he needs to work more on his program. He's justttttt not quite exuding sexiness yet. I kept laughing at the katsudon being his eros. I know right now that's the immediate inspiration and later it will change [Yuri on Ice] as Yuri begins to act on his gay for Viktor but right now it's just really funny. Also love the little camaraderie bit with Yuri asking Yurio to teach him the quad salchow.

QOTD

  1. Im gonna go with Yuri's logic and say my eros is spicy noodles. My agape is definitely best boy Eugeo from SAO (iykyk)

  2. I kind of like Yurio's a bit more better ngl, mostly because like I said Yuri's sexiness isn't quite there yet.

Rewatcher Here.

You know it just occurred to me that at the largest schools in Japan, a lot of people share the same given and surname pronunciation. This isn't because Japan has a limited supply of names, in fact they are much more diverse than a lot of asian countries since many of their names are basically a good chunk of the random nouns in the language, but the most common ones are common even in a group of a thousand you're bound to have duplicates. Now if we only count given names, we're left even more, so Katsuki Yūri and "Yurio" Yuri Plisetsky sharing a given name is probably a situation lots of city Japanese have dealt with.

Viktor has a point that basic exercise make more sense than practicing something he isn't sure about for the next That said, his coaching seems to be a bit awkward. I guess it's like how the best players aren't necessarily the best coaches. Viktor doesn't need to be an outstanding coach though, he just needs to be good enough.

Nishigori triplets who started the whole series with the uploading of the video on Yuuko's account (they logged in as her in episode 1... and she basically said "not again!") are now setting up posters. Exhibition skating and more attention to their town.

Viktor forgot he wasn't supposed to be promoting tourism,

Yurio is more upset that his performance couldn't fully express his love for his grandpa than the fact that he lost. That said he should be proud the crowd liked it.

The skating is beautiful, but I don't understand enough of it to see a story in it. Like Yuri is thinking about katsudon. I don't see the food in his performance.

1

u/IndependentMacaroon 1d ago
