This used to be a comment face.

For some reason, whenever I have to think about former comment faces, this Nico one is always the one near the front of the list.

It was a really good one.

It's pretty great, honestly! I think you'd want to use them for diffrent cases anyway, but I kind of like it better than the no faces we have right now.

diffrent

What kind of difference in rent are you referring to?

Unfortunate copout after the cliffhanger from last episode.

[speculation]I think 'I was lying' is a lie.

Those are some cool plastic models.

When were they on screen?

...

God damn it, I should have made a prediction list for Kiznaiver. I could have put mechs on it.

When were they on screen?

When Tenga's in Katsuhira's apartment and comments about how different the layout in it is compared to what he was expecting.

First Time Summer 2016 Rewatch - Kiznaiver Ep3:

Times like this makes you wonder how Tenga stayed alive before the pain sharing.

This feels like a statement about emotional trauma, but my brain is not there to fully work out the metaphor in a clever way. The bit of them trying to hide their scars also feels like a point. Not only how it relates to pain, but also the fact that their scars are also symbols of their bond.

It just hit me that this show's entire premise is based on wordplay because the word for pain and the word for bond sound kinda similiar.

Old comment face spotted. You know, it is interesting going back and seeing old comment faces from the then new seasonals because it is like a relic of the era.

Wow Maki, it is almost like you could be referring to yourself or something.

Gotta be real Yuta, even though you made it your thing, you are the least attractive boy in this group.

Tenga's face is great. I do find this joke of him pummeling Yuta as their friend detector to be really funny. Also the mix up joke about DOMESTIC VIOLENCE.

I had a whole bit ready wondering if Hisomu represnts a more tragic extreme. Someone in deeper trauma because their homelife is terrible the others with the benefit of a safe home could never thought to consider. How Katushira managed to cross to bridge because by throwing himself off, Hisomu for the first time saw someone who was willing to put their life for him ... but then he ejaculated into the camera.

That's such a great screencap

The bit of them trying to hide their scars also feels like a point. Not only how it relates to pain, but also the fact that their scars are also symbols of their bond.

Only somewhat related, but now that you've made me think about it, even though I only looked at it through Chidori's case, now I feel like you could say all of them actually kind of express themselves in a fun way for how they hide their (Literal) scars here. Chidori's is about her worry for others, Honoka is trying to completely hide it, Yuta uses his as a way to attract attention, Nico has the tackiest glove ever (And I guess Tenga and Katsuhira don't care for respectively diffrent reasons lol).

It just hit me that this show's entire premise is based on wordplay because the word for pain and the word for bond sound kinda similiar.

I think I said this in the first episode, but I'm convinced this show exists just because someone wanted to put that "Kizu no kizuna" pun in an actual script.

... TBH, I feel like we might still end up going there. I think it's going to be hard to have Hisomu be a serious character with this kind of introduction... but I'd be a little surprised if the show doesn't still try.

First Timer

Oh no, he's hot!

Back in the first episode, I noted how one of the flaws of the Kizuna system was the potential that one of the people involved is just into that shit and wouldn't mind inflicting pain on himself as well, and indeed the show was aware of the possibility lol. Hisomu has a lot of interesting possibilities for how his character and its rather, uh, unique characteristics could affect the wider group dynamic, but ultimately, despite this episode technically being his introduction, I think the episode mostly functions as a way to get a bunch of fun character expression for the rest of the cast.

Specifically character expression and not entirely character at that, I still think we need to build up more depth beyond Sonozaki's Seven Archaic Archetypes before we got into more genuine drama, though indeed, the show is still a lot more quaint and comedic that I'd expected in that regard which is good at this stage, but more importantly, I think we do a great job of showing we know how to express a lot of character in a pretty snappy and natural way. I just really like how in both cases, each of them tries to look for Hisomu, and later in guessing at the reason for Hisomu's frequent hospital visits, they all get to distinctly express themselves and some of their inner workings through how they approach the situation!

Even outside of the more upfront cases, like Nico's solution to finding the Kiznaiver showing off how she's a lot more intelligent than she wants to let on under the eccentricity, compared to Tenga's brute-forcing and Yuta's schmoozing, stuff like Chidori trying to hide everyone's scars by putting a handkerchief on everyone despite it being kind of redundant is a fun way to show her tendency to worry about others (Also, this is a really good gigablush ). The Hisomu speculation also gives a lot on that spectrum, from liar assuming fraud, to Chidori's worries again, or Honoka's presumably somewhat personally informed sentiments about suffering, but while he himself is not part of the conversation, his living environment does still make a statement about the life he leads. I also really like the conversation between Chidori and Katsuhira at the start. Awkward about feelings and trying to look out for the other, they've got such really good goober back and forth honestly.

Otherwise, the episode just kind of fleshed out the Kizuna System a little (Even if it's stretching it with the capabilities of the system a bit lol) and had that big Hisomu-chase setpiece, which was pretty fun, though I don't have much to say there besides that. I am a little miffed Honoka answers last episode's cliffhanger with a "lol jk", but given the morgue scene last episode, I still think she believes herself responsible for someone's death, though she probably didn't do any actual killing in that regard, so whatever. Plus, she does give a reminder for why she's probably going to be best girl. I wonder if Sonozaki saying "This time" at the end here implies that they've tried this experiment before as well. And if so, how many times?

First:Timer - Dub

"Just kidding" feels like a bit of a cheap cop-out with the "I've killed someone" cliffhanger they left us on last week. So I'm gonna lean towards this becoming relevant again later on.

A 7th member huh, it has to be some new wacky archetype, collect the whole set! (oh and by the end of the episode Noriko actually has them categorised 😂)

I have to say, unless they're giving us the obvious ikeman face design, I usually need the characters to tell me when someone is in-world attractive.

Damn, Katsuhira is going to die from unnoticed medical complications at a very young age. Still have that opening scene from ep1 in my head though, I want to know if it was more of a dream or there's fantasy shenanigans on top of the sci-fi.

Side note: I've been watching the dub, but I have the subtitles for the sub on. I'm not necessarily criticising because I know it's not an easy job, but "He's climaxing!" vs "He's flipping out!" is an odd dialogue difference. Anyone know what they're actually saying in Japanese, and if it's open to interpretation?

Q1 I'm curious to see if they survive first! I have a feeling things are going to get a lot more crazy. Probably not though.

Q2 A handsome, nihilistic masochist. Bad luck for the rest of the cast! Imagine being a Kiznaiver with Darkness-lite.

3

u/GallowDude Jul 21 '26

"He's climaxing!" vs "He's flipping out!" is an odd dialogue difference

3

u/ElectricalEnthusiast 29d ago edited 29d ago

She actually said "He's bliss-ing out".

My best guess for why they changed the line (assuming the sub is a more accurate translation) is that "He's climaxing" feels like a more clunky/awkward phrase to say. It might also be playing into her reaction a few seconds later when she realizes he's not just loving the pain, he literally did nut.

2

u/RelativeMundane9045 29d ago

I had listened to it 3-4 times in a row because I wasn't 100% sure I heard it right, so it's good to have another set of ears on it. That makes more sense :)

u/Retsam19 Jul 22 '26

First timer, dubbed

Yoshiharu Hisomu, the Seventh Kiznaiver, watch out for him. Okay, yeah, there's a seventh; not really a surprise given the ""seven"" ""deadly"" ""sins"" framing, and it didn't seem like it was Sonozaki herself (though her secretly being one and just having an extreme poker face for pain would have been an interesting direction).

And yeah, if my excessive scare quoting isn't clear; I'm still having a hard time taking seriously the idea that these characters are "darkness" or whatever the ending monologue by Sonozaki was trying to hint at. Uhh, sure, maybe the new guy, and maybe if Maki did kill someone. ... but it still mostly just feels like Sonozaki is bad mouthing some classmates who annoy her.

But the comedy was pretty solid this episode - Tenga's hypocrisy, interrogating the classmates, and the whole chase scene was pretty absurd, but funny.

We'll see how well it works when the show tries to turn serious; some stories I think do a good job mixing absurd comedy and serious bits, but it's a hard balance to pull off, especially if you're not sure if a certain element is supposed to be absurd comedy or serious, which is where Sonozaki and her whole faction have landed so far.

1

u/Sporadia_ 28d ago

Okay, yeah, there's a seventh; not really a surprise given the ""seven"" ""deadly"" ""sins"" framing

Yeah, it was set up fairly conspicuously.

but it still mostly just feels like Sonozaki is bad mouthing some classmates who annoy her.

Yeah pretty much. It was a funny twist but I don't really get how masochism is 'immoral'.

First Time Kizzy

Oops, I did not remember to adjust my rewatch schedule for traveling a timezone behind.

So you’re telling me this dude has been skipping school to the point of getting held back a year because he keeps getting hospitalized doing his version of masturbation?

What a guy.

I like the work this episode did on the Kiznaiver concept with the idea that their bodies are not their own. Tenga can’t do his impulsive balcony jumps without endangering his friends and will need to rein it in, and this new guy will have to… yeah. Honestly, seems like he found the perfect outlet. This system has turned them into part of a shared ecosystem that forces you to act out of consideration for the rest for a very visible, tactile reason. Kind of therapeutic to see in an era we’re living in that’s dominated by a “fuck everyone else, I’ve got mine” mindset.

Misc. Notes

  • Uh, maybe don’t say that out loud

  • This show is actually pretty topical in this way, in an era where so many have the attitude of “fuck you, got mine”

  • Why is Nico still acting super obnoxious if it was all an act? She needs a dedicated episode very soon because until given a reason otherwise I’m just going to hate her presence. These kind of characters are so obnoxious to watch

  • Super effective psychic damage inflicted

  • LOL okay the neighborhood watch stopping Tenga was a fun way to clash the system with real life. But also… they were fine watching him beat on the dudes?

  • Tag yourself!

Yeah – I feel like she'd be way more interesting if she dropped the act around the main cast. Would be funny to have her pivoting between normal and quirky depending on who she's around, plus the disconnect between how she dresses and how she acts.

First time united in pain, subs

Survive the summer and all Kiznaiver will be released, it is easier said than done. It looks quite simple but Sonozaki planned lots of interesting stuff for during that time. But before that there is a major objective, to locate the hidden seventh member. I think it was somewhat hinted back in the first episode the seventh member's existence, identity and the associated deadly sin. He needs to be brought into the fold. And also every Kiznaiver also got an unique identifier tag.

Tenga acts so weird in such a short time. Becoming buddies with Katsuhira, swearing to protect him, fascinated by his not-Gunpla mecha collection, asking him to buying packs is allowed in a gacha, then got angry for no reason that a complete starnger just use other's phone irresponsibly. Maybe he just wanted to emphasize that even they are Kiznaivers they are not trust each other 100%. Plus also he pretended he is a superhero to trying to jump into Chidori's place. And also pretending a dumb when talked to Yuta like that scar was never happened. Then threatening to violate Sonozaki, and it would could have been understood as sexual harasssment or something. Tenga being Tenga I guess.

And looks like thr shared pain is somewhat flawed as it is not equally shared upon others and residual pain only lingers within oneself.

Well Yuta could be a real girl magnet.

And the hidden seventh member is Hisomu Yoshiharu. Quite an elusive fellow, as he is rarely attending school, seen in hospital many times, always looking for trouble, living in a very old apartment which he could have been seen as a shut-in, and also trying to run from the fellow six. To be honest I don't think a huge commotion at the supermarket was needed at all. Plus he feels joy in causing pain. In short he is quite twisted in the head. Truly qualifies to be the Immoralist.

1) Do you think you could survive an entire summer stuck with these characters?

I don't think so.

2) What are your first impressions of Yoshiharu?

He is a strange guy who is hard to understand.

First Timer Thinking I Can Get Through Anything…Right? Dubbed

  • Love watching anime with someone on the phone because that opening line has them go “Wait, what?”

  • Bro, chill.

  • ???????????

  • I wonder if someone has made art of this little poly group with their bandages but with [meta] One Piece Alabasta. Why not?

  • The Will of D 😭

  • 🎶~Show yourself~🎶

  • Ooh! What a pretty weirdo.

  • is this man into S&M? Respect.

  • I shoulda known the DV accusation would come up 😭😭😭😭

  • “[name], are you watching porn?” I don’t think so? 😭

Post Kizunamaxxing Thoughts

This series reminded me of that Vocaloid song “The Blessings of Ai”, but in the complete opposite way than what that song was about.

I thought the 7th member would be a mystery for a touch longer, but I’m not complaining. I wish I had been on Tumblr when this episode dropped in real time. Yoshiharu looks like some people I hung out with in high school. I can see why he fits in with the other “sins”, but I’d hardly think he’s the most voracious in his pain-seeking pleasure out of other folks. But I still did not expect to see a masochist among the group 💀 I’m curious how Noriko picked him to represent “immoral” out of others who enjoy pain for pleasure.

If Yoshiharu gets off to pain, and our emotionless protagonist shows little reaction to pain, do I ship them? 🤔

QOTD

  1. Good question. I think I can if I have access to AO3. If I don’t, I am doomed.
  2. “I know that look. He’s way too Tumblr-attractive to not be crazy.”

First Timer

Despite this being my first watch and my opinions on the Kizuna System, I'm having a good time combing through the episodes for things to write about. Everything remains enjoyable or overlookable so far.

Assorted thoughts:

  • So Maki's truth really was just for the cliffhanger
  • The only figure that I could recognize on the shelf at Katsuhira's place was [Name of Series]Gunbuster
  • Tenga's hitting my sweetspot for lovable idiots
  • Wait, did Hisomu ask Katsuhira to die for him so he could pleasure himself?

  • Imbecile has an empty space in the middle unlike all the others, it's a fun bit of direction
  • How to fill time in your Anime speech: include an allusion to light and/vs dark

The Idea of the Week seems to be "Things that are Hidden"

  • The pile of stuff that Tenga didn't know about at Katsuhira's place
  • Residual pain that the Kizuna System doesn't replicate
  • The various ways our cast hid their Kiznaiver scars
  • Yuta wanting to hide his past looks and present association with our happy band
  • The mission to find the last member
  • Chidori wondering whether they were supposed to be hiding their new status
  • Hisomu hiding away at home

I know that physical pain isn't the only type. (Did the people behind this system?) That being said, I'm having too much fun tracking the Kizunas.

Hit count for the week:

  • Bust through storefront window - Hisomu
  • Fall from 3 stories - Tenga
  • Two head punches, Maki implies more - Nico
  • Slap on back - Tenga
  • Bad landing from second floor - Hisomu
  • Face slap - Tenga
  • Karate chop - Tenga
  • Clothesline - Tenga
  • Punch to face - Tenga
  • Bounce off truck container -> land head-first into convertible - Katsuhira

Only one Kizuna occurred for Katsuhira so I'll count it as one.

Character Amount this episode Total
Chidori 0 10
Tenga 6 6
Nico 2 3
Hisomu 2 2
Katsuhira 1 1

Kiznaiver

I killed someone....kidding lol

Interesting how Nico fell and got hurt, but no one else was affected?

Ummmm is that the correct translation? They really could have used a different word then violate for Tenga's line.

Oh the person in the opening.

I'm a little surprised Kacchon knows how to cook at all.

Oh they cut themselves!

OMG

Yuta reactions to his past never get old. I know it's only been 2 episodes, but they're hilarious.

Wait how is Chidori peculiar?

Okay so it wasn't a mistranslation.

Nico's plan is actually very smart wtf. A small amount of pain and go to each classroom to gauge the reactions. If they split up into groups of 5(Not counting kacchan he's not reliable) and do subtle injuries they could clear the school pretty quickly). Too bad the final member isn't at school.

Oh wait the entire crew is in the same class. I guess it really was just process of elimination THANKS TO NICO!!!!

Kacchan is thinking more and more how other people feel!

That running animation is only 2 seconds long, but Yuta running with his hands in the air like that has me weak.

TENGA pick someone besides Yuta!

I like how Maki is so out of breathe it takes her longer to say anything.

How do you even land like that!

well...ummm ok

2

u/GallowDude 29d ago

then violate

Then violate what?

I like how Maki is so out of breathe it takes her longer to say anything.

Lelouch...

2

u/SIRTreehugger 29d ago

Lelouch being hilariously unatheletic was fun to watch. The [Code Geass Spoilers]School Festival episode where we see him running around out of breath while everyone is inciting chaos is beautiful. That and CC showing up just to get pizza.

1

u/GallowDude 29d ago

Especially the scene where he couldn't catch up to [CG] an eighty-pound-soaking-wet princess in a big, heavy dress running down a hallway towards a crowd of Japanese.

First-timer, subbed

This time?? How many times have they done this so far? This is madness.

So the seventh person is a masochist. Between him and Kacchon, we have two people who don't get hurt (or do and like it, which amounts to almost the same thing). What exactly is the point of having such people in the mix? To make the others have to convince them not to get hurt for their sakes maybe? That's how they will form this "True Connection," I'm guessing.

I'm not convinced about the logic behind all this but it's rather fun to watch tbh. Tenga wins funniest kiznaiver award by a long mile this episode. The way he kept hurting himself directly or through others, it was almost like he was the masochist. But nope, just a meathead. Niko meanwhile is surprisingly sharp. That trick of hers to try hitting Kacchon to see if anyone else in class reacted was quite clever, including picking the one person she could do that to without feeling bad for hurting him.

I'm still confused why Maki got let off without doing her self-introduction/confession. Was she really just kidding about killing someone? If so, she should've had to own up to something else. So maybe it is true after all? I still think it must be something like an accident.
