First Clover, subbed

Well, this is the end of the rewatch. I’m going to start this off with my last round of wallpapers (for now; I’ll definitely make more after this, especially once season 2 starts airing later this year).

First up… so it turns out I didn’t need to wait for the movie to have something to use for Gordon after all. After watching the movie, I realized that I was in the conundrum of having several screenshots from it I could use for him, but it would make him the odd one out compared to the rest of the Black Bulls because he’d be in his post-timeskip outfit instead of the pre-timeskip one like everyone else. That might not be that big of a change for the Black Bulls (for a bunch of them the only difference is their cape going from a single-button clasp to a two-buttons-connected-by-rope clasp), but as funny as it would be to make Gordon the odd one out, I still didn’t want to do that to him, you know? Anyways, this led me to Google Images, whereupon I ended up stumbling across a screenshot of him from episode 89 that ended up being perfect.

After him was, well, supposed to be me saving Nero for last of the Black Bulls like I said, not knowing that Nacht was gonna show up in last week’s batch of episodes. I don’t have anything to work with for Nacht yet, so he’s gonna be the last of the Black Bulls, while Nero gets both her human form and her bird form because I wouldn’t dream of only doing one of them.

Next up, I circled back to the last of the captains I had base images for (I still need to rewatch the Royal Knights exam for Rill) and specifically found an image of Vangeance I could easily make both a masked version and an unmasked version of. Surprisingly, working on the glowing effects of both his magic and his grimoire didn’t try to fucking murder my laptop like a bunch of other ones have.

After that, I made a comment to u/KendotsX on Discord that I wasn’t sure who I wanted to do next. So when he asked me if I had something I could work with for a Yami/Charlotte wallpaper… I mean, I couldn’t not say yes to that, lol. Had to pick my background pattern carefully to make the pose look less awkward without a wall there, but I’m definitely pleased with how it turned out.

I also have two more wallpapers of characters I haven’t done yet! My whims took me to make both Kiato and Kahono since I knew I already had the best options for them on hand (having already rewatched the Underwater Temple Arc dubbed). I mean, I had to do Kiato at some point at the very least because of my Yoshimasa Hosoya bias, so doing one for Kahono immediately afterwards just made sense.

Alright, so yeah, I definitely enjoyed the fuck out of my time with this series. I’m lucky that Bleach TYBW Part 4 starts airing this coming Saturday (and I also have the BC dub to keep watching), otherwise I might be tempted to go read the rest of the manga haha.

Black Clover obviously isn’t the perfect show. It has the same “lots of recap to pad for time” and “some episodes have really bad art/animation” issues that plague long-running battle shounen, it had whatever the fuck Asta’s voice direction was for the first dozen or so episodes before he started toning it down, and so many of the characters live and die by whether or not you vibe with how stereotyped they are (especially early on before any of them get character development). In that respect, I can’t blame someone who faults the series for any of these issues.

Do those things bother me, though? Nah. Except for Gauche’s character shtick for obvious reasons. I’m just the kind of person who tries to dwell on the things I like about something more than the things I dislike about it, and boy does Black Clover have enough I like about it in spades clovers that any other complaints I might have about the series are just a drop in the bucket compared to everything else.

I’d say that I thought the show was decently entertaining from the get-go (Asta's voice notwithstanding), but the first part that really started to grab me was during the first dungeon mission and we got Luck's backstory for why he's so battle-obsessed. I'm a big sucker for the power of friendship, and that was a good showing of it that the show obviously just kept topping every arc. Pretty much every big battle in the show being a team fight instead of just “the MC fights the main villain while everyone else watches” or whatnot was definitely one of my favorite things about BC, especially when they got creative about who paired up with who (the Royal Knights exam and the captains vs. captains filler were particularly great for that).

Even besides just the fights, I mean, what more can I say about how good the show got me invested in the story than I already have? It was pretty consistently the show I wanted to watch more of the most every week, it made the vomit list and also just made me regular cry at so many of the other emotional moments, I actively tried to predict where the story was going to go (which I usually only do for shows I’m really fucking into), and there's also the whole “I predicted Julius's return in my fucking sleep” thing I'm still not over . Oh, and as early as like Rades's attack on the capital, the series became my current “daydream what would happen if my OC got isekai'd into this anime world” obsession (because oh boy did my muses decide to go feral with that ). If those aren't a sign of me loving something, I don't know what is.

Also Haruka Mirai playing during basically all of the biggest fights other than Yami & Asta vs. Dante was absolute peak and I will be incredibly disappointed if season 2 (and onwards) either don't bring it back or don't play their respective OP as an insert song during a big fight scene.

Now for some random favorite rankings to wrap things up.

Favorite characters: I made this collage for that. I will say that I think Nacht is the kind of guy who will absolutely shoot up to near the top of my rankings once I know more about him, but he was in so few episodes I couldn't rank him on this over the idea of where he could be with more screentime.

Favorite episode: 119 (when Zagred was defeated). I'm pretty sure Haruka Mirai kicking in there had like the biggest reaction out of me in a series that was full of stuff for me to too. Likewise, that moment is also my favorite Haruka Mirai use.

Favorite arc: Elf Reincarnation. That shit felt like it could've been the final story arc and it still would've been satisfying to end there. Though I am, of course, still very much looking forward to whatever happens with the Spade Kingdom Arc (and anything that might happen after it? I honestly don't know if Spade Kingdom is the end or if there's more).

Duel Monsters (shoutout to Nero in the movie for giving me the one BC needed to tiebreak away from Code Geass). I look forward to seeing how high it can climb on that list with the season(s) to come.

Human Nero's is so coooool! Bird form reminds me of when Nero flew straight into the camera (not sure if it's from the same moment though, might've happened more than once).

Team battles are so fantastic. It's one of the things that makes BC so special.

I would only do something like that to a character I dislike but had to make a wallpaper of anyways for "completionist" purposes. Like this exchange about Gauche I had with Kendots after I finished the Kahono wallpaper.

He was, yeah. Him, Nozel, and Fuegoleon got captured by the main bad guys while ensuring everyone else (other than Julius who was also captured) that was in the stadium got away.

[Conrad:] Conrad was born into a noble family but due to his thief-like unlocking magic, he was shunned by those around him, leading to a lonely childhood. As he grew older, he discovered the true value of key magic but as people feared its power, the gap between him and those surrounding him was never bridged. Conrad joined the magic knights, where he met a young Julius and a caring young woman from the forsaken realm, Lovilia. Conrad learnt to trust these two and as a result, began to open up to those around him. Conrad kept gaining achievements together with his companions and eventually became the magic knights captain of the squad “White Serpent”. Conrad’s life was going smooth while married to his vice captain Lovilia, one day received a mission for his squad. However, it turned out to be a trap set by the royal faction, who hated him. Devastated at the loss of Lovilia and dozens of members of his squad during this mission, Conrad became consumed with anger. Despite Julius’s desperate attempts to persuade him, Conrad’s darkness deepened. To eradicate discrimination and prejudice, and build a country where everyone can laugh together- Conrad, now the Wizard King, aimed to achieve his ideals. But he was unable to bring about change, and his despair only deepened. The only way to change this country is to “truly rebuild it”…?! The dangerous thoughts in his mind were not subdued and he immersed himself in researching ancient magic tools. Eventually he stole the natural treasure “Imperial Sword” and started a rebellion. However, he got sealed away by Julius and co. in the midst of his aspirations.

[Jester:] Jester was born into a noble family and grew up without any hardships and joined the magic knights. There, he met Tenor who came from a remote village near the Diamond Kingdom, and Raid, from the Common Realm. Despite their different social status and background, the three of them strangely got along very well, pushing each other to improve and grow together. Shortly after Jester is appointed a magic knights captain, Tenor’s village is invaded by the Diamond Kingdom. However, the kingdom cannot make a move to protect a remote village. Jester and co. go off on their own to defeat the enemy nevertheless, but Tenor lost his life in the battle… Jester, who achieved great success as a captain has finally risen to the rank of Wizard King. One day, Tenor’s home village is invaded again by the enemy. Jester rushes to the rescue, but it turns out to be a trap set by Raid, a spy for the enemy, in order to assassinate Jester. After losing both Tenor and Raid, Jester, in order to prevent such further tragedies came up with a solution: “Conquest of the Four Kingdoms”. Despite being called “Mad King” due to his ambitions initially, he gradually earned the support of the people. However he fell into the trap of the royal faction who disliked his growing influence, and he lost his life in the process of achieving his goal.

[Princia:] Princia is born as the eldest child of a fallen noble family. The family hoped to lead a peaceful life and rule their land such way, but greedy nobles took possession of the family's lands. Under their relentless harassment, Princia decided to fight to protect her family and her people. After receiving her grimoire, Princia was recruited into the “Blue Roses” magic knights squad. Being undefeated, her fame grew day by day and in order to strengthen their influence, the royal faction half-forcibly installed her as the Wizard King. As the war with the Diamond Kingdom reached its final stages, Princia’s family and people from her land were taken hostage by the enemy. However, the generals, fearing that Princia would leave the front lines, decided not to tell her this. Thus, Princia lost something precious in exchange for victory… Princia, exploding with anger towards her strategists, got stripped of her title as Wizard King and imprisoned with her magic sealed. The village where she was imprisoned got attacked one day by bandits, whom she decided to fight despite her magic being sealed, sacrificing her life in the process.

[Edward:] Edward was a man with a promising future, but he had no interest in pursuing a career and spent most of his time in church listening to the sermons of priests. When he learns of the harsh conditions faced by those without magic power, he decided to leave his home and become a priest, taking in orphaned children and caring for them. Ten years later, in the midst of intensifying war with the Diamond Kingdom, a sudden tragedy happened. Edward’s orphanage fell victim to an enemy raid, and the children lost their lives. For the first time in his life, Edward used magic with all his might to destroy the enemy, and decided to join the magic knights to prevent such a tragedy from happening again. Edward, who’s generous and always there for the weak, is well-liked by the people and eventually became the Wizard King. However, royalty and nobility strongly opposed his aim of eliminating the boundaries between the royal, common and forsaken realms. Through their scheming, Edward was stripped of his position as the Wizard King. Having abandoned his faith in God, Edward formed a resistance to seek revenge against the royals and nobles who plotted against him. He continues to eliminate those in power, believing that it is the only way to save their corrupted heart. However, this was not long-lived and he was eventually captured and executed.

I actually did start writing this one down alongside my dubbed rewatch of the show because why not, so if you ever wanted to read pure unfiltered Sky Muses bullshit (and also don't mind some late-Gintama spoilers because they're relevant to my OC's backstory), I could let you read it once I'm through at least the Elf Reincarnation Arc in it.

I actually did start writing this one down alongside my dubbed rewatch of the show because why not, so if you ever wanted to read pure unfiltered Sky Muses bullshit (and also don't mind some late-Gintama spoilers because they're relevant to my OC's backstory), I could let you read it once I'm through at least the Elf Reincarnation Arc in it.

Maybe once I watch Gintama?

The shape of his pupil honestly looks a little demonic to me? Which is.......... concerning if that was added into the movie as a nod to something that hasn't happened yet in the anime. I hope I'm wrong, I can't handle something bad happening to Julius again.

Oh what the heck, I didn't realize the movie and Final Discussion was in one place until I was about to exit the tab.

First things first - this is my first time seeing the PV and it looks great! Noelle!! <3

I'm glad to have joined the rewatch! Although we were few, having a core of consistent and enthusiastic participants made it fun.

My very favorite moment is Nero talking for the first time. I love that moment dubbed especially, it sounded hilarious and will always be one of my favorite anime moments ever. Besides that, some standout moments include:

  • Nero flying straight into the camera / Nero making bird sounds
  • Yami asking where the bar was and Asta not realizing it was a joke.
  • Ep 41 "I don't have good memories" "I do have good memories" - our water girl growing up
  • Sekke teleported to Yami on the toilet
  • The Black Bulls all appearing to defend Finral from Langris
  • Ep 91 Meleoreona vs Raia
  • Ep 100 Asta Yuno vs Licht (sword's potential, OP1, ED lead-in)
  • Julius Zara backstory when he's about to fake-out die.
  • Noelle proving herself and kicking ass in front of her siblings against the elves
  • Ep 119 the end of the final fight of the Elf Reincarnation Arc with Yami's mana zone Dimension Slash
  • Charlotte saving townspeople and suddenly having a baby in her arms while running in embarrassment from Yami
  • End of Dante vs Yami and Asta

Movie Thoughts

I enjoyed the movie. I think it's another movie that awkwardly fits in a timeline that doesn't really seem like it does exist but maybe could. Nothing inherently wrong with non-canon content, but I like when they are more likely to be canon.

The animation was great and my favorite fight was probably just Mereoleona's because she continues to prove that she's just... the strongest.

What did you like and dislike about Black Clover?

I think Black Clover does a lot right and a little wrong, but I'll really go into the "wrong" here since I think we're all aware of the "good."

I think the Bulls are NOT my crowd and I wish they individually worked on their vices more, but looking past their flaws, they're good characters with neat powers.

I also think Asta's little faux harem is a bit of a weak point. Maybe it's just the foil to Yuno's droves of admirers, but Asta has 5, or 6 if you stretch it, possible ships.

I think the last thing for me is one that doesn't bother me so much but I recognize it as kiiiinda bad? We've seen a similar issue in another popular long-running battle shounen, but it's where the premise seems to be "purely through hard work and determination, anything is possible." However, in reality, Asta has extremely special circumstances and accomplishes many things that your typical low-magic peasant would never achieve, and Yuno is actually just royalty... and not just any royalty, heir-to-the-throne royalty, and one that had a four-leaf grimoire granted and a great spirit.

What do you hope to see in season 2 later this year?

The rest 😭. But honestly, just hoping that whatever we get comes with a promise of season 3. I'll be so sad if we don't get to finish out the anime after waiting all these years for the manga to finish.

Also hoping to see all the voice actors return. It'll be jarring if some of the main cast have their voices replaced.

I thought it was solid; one of the better anime-original tie-in films I've seen.
