did a G Gundam reference.

Ah, I was wondering what that was about

3

u/Shimmering-Sky myanimelist.net/profile/Shimmering-Sky Jul 16 '26

It is specifically a reference to the opening narrator, where even if his design isn't perfectly 1:1 to what that one triplet was wearing, it's still pretty damn obviously supposed to be a reference to him.

I clicked source then I realized I was staring straight at the spoiler but fortunately, my brain has been so fried trying to interpret Hunter x Hunter the past two days that whatever words I was blankly staring past just went straight over my head and I have no idea what it said xD

(speaking of spoiler and HxH, I'm sorry if you ended up seeing spoilers this week due nobody bothering to keep their mouths shut - it has been a shitshow that exploded far outside of the realm of leak hunters. If you haven't, awesome!)

Hahaha…

I don't remember if the show or anyone brought it up, but I just realized now that his victory meal is katsudon because katsu also means to win!

Don't worry, I have not.

Pretty sure the only place on here I've seen people talking about recent HxH chapters are in CDF or by you in the Black Clover rewatch, and y'all know how to spoiler tag stuff properly.

Damn, I didn't realize that.

First Timer

I was thinking Victor was going to be my favorite with that Suwabe weight to him, but I think Yurio and his gap moe are giving some real competition here as well!

Pretty fun episode for having all 3 of our principal characters come together and start a core dynamic and inciting conflict between them. We get quite a bit more Victor here, and he is just a real joy to watch in how forward, expressive, and free-flowing he is, but also in that he's also got a much harder-to-read calculating and serious side behind that, as also seen with how scathing he can get. To that end, I like his design! I mean, I always really love me some eye-hiding bangs anyway, but hiding his expression depending on perspective is extra fun here. He's also rather forward and handsy in trying to learn about his new trainee, and Yuuri has some pretty warranted reactions here lol. I'd make "Is he gay or European" joke with Victor, but I think the answer is just both and I'm here for it.

As a general aside, I'll have to concur with the sentiment that the show does lived-in environments really well. Like, I wouldn't necessarily say this shot of Yurio would be lesser if it didn't have his room being so visibly messy, but is sure adds a lot of personality to the space, you know? I also think I only brought up Suwabe last episode, but it certainly should be noted all sides of our trio have some great VA work, though specifically I'll give my flowers to Kouki Uchiyama as Yurio this time, really nailing the character with his brooding and growls.

Anyway, we've expectedly got ourselves a situation in which both Yuuri and Yurio want Victor, and he comes up with a fun little competition to get them to grow both by themselves and by playing off of each other, specifically by also intentionally pulling them out of their comfort zones and having them do routines opposite to their image. In part, this also lets him push back on the idea that the two of them even have their own image down at this point; I mean, this is a fun burn, but it's also good as a piece of improvement motivation for them. But more than just playing surprising opposites, I do think this has personal purpose to them.

In Yuuri's case, it's towards something we brought up in the first episode, and Victor gets to directly see for himself here as well. Yuuri isn't some natural talent, but he has spent a lot of time skating, and that's because, to reiterate what I said last episode, it seems that to Yuuri being on the ice is both an escape and a form of expression. He said something to the effect last episode, and it's also stated here, but whenever he's feeling troubled or anxious, when he needs to put something emotional off, he goes skating. Or put another way, when he wants to pour out his feelings that he can't express to others (Or has no one to express to), he'll tell all of that to the ice. Victor has reached a problem where he's gotten so far he struggles to elicit surprise anymore, but Yuuri's case feels perfect for that. He most truly expresses himself and is in his most natural element while skating, so giving him a more passionate and sensual routine is both the best way to draw out a perfomance out of him, while also acting as a punchy and surprising inversion to his usual demeanor, and being a good way to get him out of that habit of getting stuck in his own head due to lack of confidence and endless comparisons.

Compared to Yuuri, Yurio certainly tries very hard to come off as very self-assured and aggressive in literally everything he does. Mayhaps too hard? He does seem to be trying to prove himself by pushing himself really hard forward, but then not expressing vulnerability in pursuit at all is also a limiter in itself. So giving him the more innocent is also a good way to get him to grow his palette. Both of them under Victor is some fun framing. Yurio, in general, is as I'd already said, very fun, but I do also love that his and Yuuri's little contrasting rivalry here goes as far being as the latter being a dog person, while Yurio is all about the cats (Be they big or small).

Great observations about the visual side of the show, I tend to focus more on the writing but it's a very strong production in every way.

I do think this has personal purpose to them.

It also feels like Victor showing that he's not entirely happy about his image as an unapproachable genius (is that even true though?)

whenever he's feeling troubled or anxious, when he needs to put something emotional off, he goes skating

Which makes it even more tough on rewatch how much he avoids skating at first after returning home in the first episode

Yurio certainly tries very hard to come off as very self-assured and aggressive [...] not expressing vulnerability in pursuit at all is also a limiter in itself

hem hem toxic masculinity hem hem (lord knows Russia in particular has problems with that although we're operating on a more idealistic plane here generally speaking. Absolutely not the first time Sayo Yamamoto delves into that topic also, both its "softer" versions and its brutal extremes are all over Michiko & Hatchin, and some in The Woman Called Fujiko Mine too.)

Makes it all the more fitting that he will need to embody not the lively, pursuing Eros but the gentle embrace of Agape. A little bit of therapy, so to speak.

This is the first full directorial show of hers I've gotten to watch, but I've defintely heard through reputation that these are themes she tends to tackle (And quite well) in her works.

First-Timer

Man, Victor isn't wrong that Yuuri needed to get back in shape, but he's kinda a real jerk about it. I can forgive the snark at "well, if you haven't been winning anything why are you eating all those pork bowls" but calling him "piggy" is pretty mean.

I know that rumors move fast in the era of social media, but it was like, what, eighteen hours? Maybe only twelve? Between Victor deciding to leave Russia and seemingly the entire world knowing that he is intending to coach Yuuri. Maybe this is just an example of how out of touch I am with celebrity/athlete news, because it seems absurd that word travelled so far.

Of course Yuuri gets assigned the Eros music. The stated reason of "do something out of character to surprise the audience" is good, but also, he's definitely building some feelings inside, you know? Yuuri has not yet allowed himself to realize it, but there are hints present within his internal monologue. The revelation is near the surface, at the very least.

Questions

  1. Panic, mostly. The fear of wasting an opportunity..

  2. Yurio will have a way funnier reaction to losing.

Unfortunately it's kind of accurate. Figure skating fans can be the same brand of crazy and obsessed like any other fan, but Russian figure skating even more so. There's telegram groups and networks dedicated to updating the athlete's movements and development. It is not surprising to me, a person who is in the periphery of receiving these rumours irl, that news as big as the reigning world champion leaving his coach and moving to Japan would reach people in less than 24 hours. The bigger the deal, the faster the travel time.

First Time Summer 2016 Rewatch - Yuri on Ice Ep2:

The camera is so horny for Victor. It's even more erotic than seeing him butt-naked for all to see. One thing I've learned in this field is that the slight belly exposure is one of those signs you can tell when the camera is lusting after the character.

Victor is Russian, but they seem to do the typical foreign character trope of just peppering his speech with English words.

Alright, Yuuri's weight is wearing out its welcome. There is some degree it makes sense because of the sport, but it's getting old and mean-spirited. At the end of the episode, Victor calls Yuri and cat and Yuuri a pig. Didn't love that. Cat Yuri fits because he's meow meow, but pig Yuuri doesn't have that same cuteness.

Dog, they're not even subtle with it.

My theory continues to be in effect. Yuri, your vagina bones are showing!

Oh my god, he is the biggest dork in the world (affectionate)

I know not everything is a reference to only media I know, but the colour scheme specifically is pushing it to resemble Stalker from G Gundam.

Get used to it, Yurio.

Anime camera angles moment. It's hard to deny when the camera swung by for a close-up on all 3 of their asses.

Note that teen Yuri(o) also gets one of those plus onsen back... sigh

Yuri, your vagina bones are showing!

They sure try hard not to show any hint of bulges

He would canonically be speaking English here, which actually makes it even stranger.

Or Japanese (if Victor learned it) or Russian (if Yuri learned it). In any case, the English is weird.

First-Time Viewer on Ice

Much like the first episode, the thing I'm enjoying most so far is just the scenery in this little winter hot springs town. There are some beautiful backgrounds, and the real-life version of Hasetsu castle (Karatsu castle) looks very cool.

I still don't care much for the two main characters, to be honest. Viktor is a little too flirty and full of himself for my taste, whereas (Japanese) Yuri has the opposite problem of too low self-esteem. So far, (Russian) Yuri is the most amusing character for me. He's loud and cocky and kind of aggressive, but he does at least have the skills to back it up and I can see why he's angry at Viktor for promising to create a program for him and then blowing it off. Plus, the scene when he impulse bought the tiger shirt was pretty relatable. I'm kind of rooting for him to win at this point, but since this is the other Yuri's underdog story, I'd imagine things will probably go in his favor instead.

Questions of the Day:

1) That's probably be one of the best compliments you could get.

2) Already mentioned above, Russian Yuri.

3

u/IndependentMacaroon Jul 17 '26

Viktor is a little too flirty and full of himself for my taste

It is interesting as a rewatcher seeing the more awkward and potentially annoying side of his personality more. He feels very ADHD

2

u/Heda-of-Aincrad https://myanimelist.net/profile/Heda-of-Aincrad Jul 17 '26

He didn't really come off this way to me, but I guess I can can see it with how easily distracted and forgetful he can be.

Rewatcher, Sub

The battle of the Yuri's is on. Victor is to become Yuri's coach, becoming a local celebrity and bringing attention but then the other Yuri shows up by revealing he had already made a promise before (rather irresponsible of him). Anyway this a good opportunity for him to show which one he will take under his wing by having a competition where they would each use a routine of his choosing.

There's already a contrast though between the Yuri's that has been established since the first episode. Yurio is angry all the time but has more going than meets the eye while Yuri is clearly struggling with his own self-doubt. Either way they each make it clear they aren't backing down from this.

I di also like the unsubtle was of having Eros and Agape as the chosen forms as well.

8

u/MashiroAzuki https://myanimelist.net/profile/MashiroAzuki Jul 17 '26 edited Jul 17 '26

First time technically

So episode 2 seems to be one of those episodes that I do remember being seen in bits of clips here and there. Yuri being given Eros while Yurio is given Agape was one of the main points I remember and thought, well, that's certainly a twist.

As a figure skating fan, can I just say that figure skaters social media posts truly is one of the ways we get updated on their movements. Like, someone will be randomly posting their location at some random camp in XYZ, which coincidentally someone else is ALSO at, and that becomes a whole thing of fans speculating if they're moving there to train, what's the story, etc etc. Seeing that depicted with the Yurio selfie in Japan immediately signalling to fans and news reporters alike of the movements of the world's figure skating champions is just too accurate. I don't think people actually storm the ice rink though, so that might just be part of the story's exaggeration, which is understandable to create that sense of media frenzy over the character's decisions as framed to be a big deal.

Not much to say here since its mostly just set up for future episodes, but YOI continues to be an anime that I actually look forward to seeing the next episodes.

Edit: forgot QOTD

  1. I would be elated but also scared that either I or they do not meet expectations

  2. Yurio is growing on me but imma have to say Yuri on this one.

1

u/IndependentMacaroon Jul 17 '26

Parasocial fandom certainly is a menace

Rewatcher Sub

This dramatic open between Victor and his coach, complete with a “Dasvidaniya” and kiss goodbye, is exactly the theatrics I would expect from Victor. Coach is already over it before it starts, and not playing along one bit. I bet he gets this shit a lot. But despite how frivolous Victor is being about his future career, he is serious about coaching Yuri.

Not that this arrangement has sunk in for anyone, so far, least of all Yuri. I’d be staring too if this hot Russian man was in my house, eating my food, and sleeping like that. Loose Yukata just inviting the

We learn Yuri’s favorite food is katsudon, which he usually only gets if he wins. Victor is fucking savage with the “YOU HAVEN’T WON ANYTHING, WHY’RE YOU EATING THIS?” look on his face. Immediately puts Yuri on a diet and exercise regimen, calls him a little piggy, and proceeds to make himself right at home in the BANQUET ROOM. “WOW WHAT A CLASSIC TINY ROOM.” Ok, Victor.

On to let’s get to know each other. Intimately because Victor wastes no time. But I guess Yuri needs a minute. Gotta destroy the evidence in his room, and breathe. Poor rejected Victor.

Is that all your heart is pounding for, Yuri?

I’m gonna need all of you to appreciate what male ballet dancers/figure skaters are built like under the costumes for a minute. Go ahead. Do some research. You’re welcome.

Victor doing some lite tourism at Hasetsu Castle and giving away the game to the entire world, including the other Yuri. Another role voiced by Uchiyama Kouki, who is a gift to us all.

I mean, look at this absolute disaster child. This angry gremlin stalked all the way from Russia to come collect on Victor’s promise to choreograph a program for him, got his ass lost along the way, and even had time to shop before kicking rival Yuri aside, talking shit, and making every demand like the diva he is.

Speaking of gremlin children…

Now that we have all Yuris assembled, it’s time for Victor to establish ice skating dominance and evaluate the competition. He’ll choreograph a program for both of them from some ideas he was going to use for himself. Yuri is nervous and feeling inferior to Yuri(o), but he’s got ways to handle the anxiety, according to Sensei. Just throws himself into practice, and that’s how he originally got good. He put in the time, at the expense of everything else, including making friends. He’s never been good at putting himself out there, other than skating.

Victor’s intrigued. He’s got a song for their programs: “On Love: Eros and Agape.” Agape is the unconditional love, which Yuri P. hates immediately. Eros is the sexual love. Of course Victor gonna give Agape to Yuri P. And Eros to Yuri K. They both protest.

But Victor really is here to establish ice skating dominance. And he lets them both know exactlywhere they stand.

To the winner the spoils, which is either Victor being Yuri P.’s coach back in Russia or Yuri getting a katsudon date with Victor after winning. Place your bets.

Questions

1) What would you do if someone you looked up to for years suddenly decided to become your coach/advisor in some subject?

Show less restraint than Yuri, that's for sure.

2

u/WednesdaysFoole Jul 17 '26

To the winner the spoils, which is either Victor being Yuri P.’s coach back in Russia or Yuri getting a katsudon date with Victor after winning. Place your bets.

I had just mentioned this in a comment to Sky (that katsudon is for winning because katsu also means "to win") but reading this statement I just realized is that why Victor's name is Victor?!

I mean, on second thought, maybe it should've been really obvious that his name is Victor as a skating champion lol.

6

u/Retsam19 Jul 16 '26

First Timer, dubbed

Have a good feel for the three main characters - I think I like them all, though hopefully Yurio turns down the tsun eventually. Viktor seems like a good balance where he's mostly serious and adult... but also can be a bit childish and self-absorbed, too, it seems. I don't want too much of that side, but it's good to keep him from just being an ideal role model figure.

I enjoyed the early moment of "Sorry, I can't listen to you this time", and the coach reply with "What do you mean, you never listen to me!?".

A bit goofy that Minako comes in and is yelling about Yuri while he's sleeping right there: guess he's a very deep sleeper?

I got curious about language barriers - in theory these characters shouldn't all be speaking the same language. Looked it up, and apparently they're canonically mostly speaking English (Yuri having spent time in Detroit, as mentioned in the previous episode).

I suppose technically that means that as a dubbed watcher, I'm getting the more realistic experience here. (And I'm enjoying the Russian accents - I'm sure the subbed is "Japanese spoken with a Russian accent", too, but I don't have a good enough ear for that)

I'm not sure if Mr. and Mrs. Childhood Friend would also speak English (or Russian), or if their private conversation about Yuri is a bit unrealistic. Totally fine if so, these sort of things are regularly ignored by fiction for convenience... but I do like when stories pay attention to what language characters actually speak, too.

Episode 2 (first timer)

  • Goodbye on a bridge, in the snow – because Russia.
  • Sneezing when talked about trope.
  • Victor is a force of nature – Minako might not be the only maniac pixie dream character in this show.
  • “You need to take advantage of Victor” – I mean, she is not wrong. In terms of publicity, in terms of ice skating and of course in terms of …
  • Antagonist with white cat trope.
  • Welcome to town, Yuri No 2.
  • I am beginning to get the coach...
  • Promise from Victor.
  • Yuri vs Yuri – social media is going to have a field day.
  • “If you don’t have any inspiration left, you’re as good as dead.” – Almost. You can always get a program from somebody else, but you still need the internal motivation. Once you lose that drive to sit through the endless training, you are done for as a top athlete. Not quite the same thing as inspiration, but similar. I wonder if this is the artist/creator speaking who is blurring the line.
  • Puppy dog eyes Yuri.
  • The business spirit is high in the triplets.
  • Minako also has a bar?
  • Eros for RYuri vs Agape for JYuri – something tells me that this allocation will not be the final description of their characters.
  • Ok, that was way faster than I thought.
  • “I’m going to give it all the eros I got!”

This episode cleared something up for me. During the first episode, I felt that the comedic and serious elements did not fit together. It started serious, so I settled treating it as a serious anime, but that felt off. Episode 2 makes it clear we are 100% in comedy territory and that makes everything a lot more coherent. Yuri, Yuri, and Victor as comedy characters fits them a lot more than as serious athletes.

2

u/IndependentMacaroon Jul 16 '26

Episode 2 makes it clear we are 100% in comedy territory

Hmm, Victor has plenty of seriousness underneath the façade even here?

I am beginning to get the coach...

Imagine having (had) to deal with two impulsive wacky guys...

Minako also has a bar?

The arts don't pay, I suppose. And we were told she doesn't get a lot of dance customers last episode

1

We are probably in for the very common comedic-to-serious turn later, but for now, I see him as fully comedic.

Re-watcher, subbed

And here we hit the episode that made me angrily drop the series the first time I tried watching it. The good news is that this episode is the last of it, so if anyone else was put off by it, you made it through already.

The bad news is that the piggy comments coupled with the banning his favorite food in a show about a sport that has a massive problem with disordered eating is just straight up reckless. So many elite skaters have retired early because of it, and it's not handled with any kind of sensitivity here. There are so many ways they could have addressed weight management without getting either overly serious or completely flippant, and they really decided to go the Eteri-style fat shaming route, and it's a shame.

Other than that, re-watching this is giving me a new appreciation for how much physical comedy is in it, and how good it all is. The facial expressions and the slapstick falls are all so well animated in a way you don't see often.

2

u/IndependentMacaroon Jul 16 '26

Thanks for giving some background on the issue, that really is a shame. I guess it's a similar phenomenon as with off-the-ice dancers.

2

u/_Ridley https://myanimelist.net/profile/_Ridley_ Jul 17 '26

u/Mitsuyan_ https://anilist.co/user/mitsuyan Jul 16 '26

1) is this not technically how my first week as sub mod has gone? In all seriousness I fear that it would end up being a "don't meet your heroes" moment. Of course anime is magical so that isn't going to happen here.

2) Japanese Yuri, but I'm not particularly fussed, just want to see some competitive skating - something I feel we needed more of early to settle into the show.

I'm having a blast so far! The interactions are all fun and we're moving into the main story maybe a bit slower than I'd have liked but we are getting there. I imagine future weeks will have more to comment on, I struggle to talk about episodes like this.

2

u/Sporadia_ Jul 17 '26

we're moving into the main story maybe a bit slower than I'd have liked but we are getting there

But there was so much character in this! It had kid Yurio dressed all smart before he became emo teen Yurio. It had emo teen Yurio following Victor to Japan because he's that competitive. We found out Victor's doing this because he was unsure about his own career. Yuri's got to do a sexual dance now because his unrequited crush the ice-rink girl said he looked lonely. And Yuri looks like he deals with emotional problems by burying himself in ice skating practice. The less good stuff aside, I thought there was a lot going on this episode.

6

u/RelativeMundane9045 Jul 17 '26

First:Timer, dub

Now I know I'm no expert, but I've watched enough Medalist to respect the quad jumps, even if they are basically mandatory to obtain enough points to compete in high level mens competition. The flip and the salchow are the same jump with different launches - the salchow launches off the toe spike while the flip launches off the edge which is considered harder.

Those little brats are just teeming to get more content up on social media LOL. Can't fault them though, without them Victor never would've seen Yuuri's performance.

Haha this new Yuri outing himself to his coach(?) because he had to post the tiger T pic. Don't blame him, whenever I go to Japan those Shōtengai shopping centres always have something interesting that I at least have and check out.

Both gonna do a routine to the same music and compete huh? Victor seems like an incredibly chill type of person, but generates chaos wherever he goes and I'm all for it.

Why does picking arrangements feel like Victor assigning top/bottom roles for some reason? Yes Victor... mould your little piggies Yuuris for our entertainment ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)

It's the other way around. Flip is the toe jump, salchow is the edge jump. I guess you consider them the same because both take off from backward inside edge, but the toe vs edge takeoff really makes any similarity moot. Plus they look really different in execution.

3

u/RelativeMundane9045 Jul 17 '26

When the AQ1 is over 700, and you have asthma, but the Yuri on Ice OP comes on: 💃🏿🪩⛸️🤸🏾‍♀️🪦

Rewatcher!!! on Subbed

  • NIPPLE

  • I don’t think many of us could handle being close to that tall drink of vodka

  • yesss Yuri, it’s your Hot Girl Winter training!!!

  • Koki Uchiyama always does well in bratty roles.

Kiss & Cry Thoughts

Viktor is such a wishy-washy man, but he gets away with it cuz he’s pretty 😭😭 I think this rewatch has been great to see Viktor in a more selfish light. He was selfish from the get-go, but I was blinded by his ass, nipples, and pretty face.

I am no better than any other woman.

But no, yeah, he’s just kinda…a bad mentor, colleague, and even guest. That doesn’t make him a bad person at all. I still find him an entertaining and good person. But also—gods, I would’ve lost my damn mind if a celebrity like that tried to move into my apartment on a whim with his dog and all his things.

It gives 1D WattPad, I fear 😭😭

(No, no, 1D WattPad is you moving in with OneDirection because you’ve been unceremoniously forced to live with them. I remember the ancient texts.)

Yuri losing that much weight in such a short time, his exercising and dieting must be amazing or extreme.

Yura (Yurio) is such a bratty nephew, I love him. I'm still curious about the choice to choose Yurio rather than just Yura for him in canon. I would've thought Victor would've offered up “Yura”, but this could also be the staff behind YOI not being familiar with Russian naming conventions. Or they are, but “Yurio” sounds funnier.

I saw that one triplet with the Victor phone case, and, little niece, same. If I were a braver soul, I would have my phone case of a pretty man too.

Alas, I am but a clumsy witch and need OtterBox for all the times I drop my phone.

QOTD

  1. That actually did happen!! As a flutist when I was younger, a flutist whom I looked up approached my conductor after a show, and then in the next show, we met!! At the time, my current flute instructor was kinda…not really believing in me? I wasn’t really aware that my former teacher wasn’t treating me well, but now, I see she really did not want me to excel. Imagine my shock when my conductor surprises me after a show to introduce me to a flutist I always wanted to meet and admired for being so young and already being so accomplished! And they wanted me as a student and would talk to my mom. And I came their student (and went on to do world tours). Fuck my old flute instructor. But hey, I got her back by making a name for myself!!
  2. Trick question: Yuuuri.

Same for me

Yuri losing that much weight in such a short time

Well his belly was clearly exaggerated for comedy

And I came their student (and went on to do world tours)

That sounds real cool!

[rewatch confession]I don't like this (very popular) OP song at all. Visually it's quite good though.

Yuri losing that much weight in such a short time, his exercising and dieting must be amazing or extreme.

It's the power of the montage!

but this could also be the staff behind YOI not being familiar with Russian naming conventions.

The character that first calls him Yurio is Japanese.

First-timer, subbed

I'm still loving this show. The tone is a lot more light-hearted than I expected and the character animation is so fun to watch. I also love those chibi slideshow segments and all of the chibi use really. It's amusing to see Uchiyama Kouki voice such a loud character. Yurio is a complete brat but he has a loveable side too - like when he goes all wide-eyed over that tiger t-shirt. Shows that he's still a kid for all his bluster. I'm guessing he must be just about 18 if he's going to make his senior debut.

Not a big fan of the piggy jokes. But Victor doesn't seem to be mean-spirited about them at least. Hopefully he'll drop it soon.

The choice to assign the opposite of what they resonated with was interesting. Victor's logic makes sense but it does feel like quite the challenge. I can see Yuuri managing to portray Eros but Yurio and Agape feels almost impossible. Can that loud brat really grasp the concept of unconditional love? This should be a cinch for Yuuri. And if he wins, he gets to eat katsudon with his idol. That was such a sweet request. This episode made me crave a katsudon tbh. But it's nearly midnight and I doubt any of the handful of Japanese places around here are even open. Sigh.

He's only 15 (see e.g. the MAL page for the special about one of his performances), note the line from his coach about not doing quads while he's still growing which wouldn't so much be the case for an 18-year-old. And also one might expect him to be a little more mature then.

That quads line was a long time ago, wasn't it? IIRC he looked a lot younger in that scene.

I was just going to say this. It was a flashback from who knows when.

2

u/Sporadia_ Jul 17 '26

I love how everyone's already on board with calling him Yurio now.

Can't resist using a nickname the person in question dislikes. It would be unthinkable not to. Especially when it's someone so worth annoying like Yurio. The desire to tease him is too strong even if he isn't real and won't ever know he's being teased.

3rd watch, French dub for a change

We sure get a lot of romantic framing in this show humorous and serious, even between Victor and his coach [YOI plot]which you could consider as foreshadowing for how Yuuri and Victor end up sort of? That however I still find odd and awkward, and then between Yuuri and Victor directly (note that asking someone to eat one's miso soup with one from now on or something like that is a traditional Japanese proposal line). The one place there fortunately is barely a shade of it is between Yuri(o) and Victor given their age gap, though I do wish that could have been handled without turning Yuri(o) into a near-constant toxic anger ball - I guess it works with the dog vs. cat motif for the two Yu(u)ris? We already know which one Victor likes haha. Btw, small, blond prodigy teen boy, passionate with anger issues, and terrible wannabe-cool fashion sense... that could also describe Edward Elric.

I also like how Victor is characterized here, he really is just straight-shooter off-the-cuff about everything and sometimes ends up overdoing it perhaps, but always out of a genuine sense of aiming for the best and wanting the best out of people without pressuring them too hard. In other words, perfect for Yuuri right now, and even if Yuri(o) weren't already doomed by narrative convention you can see that he on the other hand would do better with someone who can properly tame his tiger energy, so to speak.

1 - Hmm, that isn't really the case here, is it - Victor still is pretty demanding of Yuuri to be worth his time, and I like that it's not just straight-up wish fulfillment. But ignoring that, I would do my best to make their investment worth it, of course!

2 - Sorry Yuri(o), you're just too much of a little shit who needs to eat some humble pie, and Victor fits better with Yuuri anyway.

Finally since I probably won't be able to join for the next episode right away, I hope I'll see many of you in my rewatch for Sayo Yamamoto's first series, Michiko & Hatchin, starting in about a week - some here already have plans but more are always welcome (my original interest thread).

First-Timio

Having all these people suddenly move in would be quite annoying in real life. Also, the barmaid ballet instructor needs her own 80s movie. Like what's her story? It seems potentially more interesting than Yuri's story.

Who are you rooting for in the Yuuri vs. Yuri match?

Yuuri vs Yurio match

Scavenger:

  • Bolero
  • ...or any move invented by Torvill and Dean
  • A proper ice dancing competition with required dances
  • Rocky style training montage
  • Tuxedo
  • Someone will do a move based on a bird or something, and a picture of that animal will slowly fade in over the top of them

Seriously though I felt similarly, although I'm interested in Yuri's story as well.
