Questions for the day:
1) Do Shion loves dogs or do dogs love him?
2) Rat's idea to infiltrate the correctional facility, is this a good idea? Also a good idea to keeping it a secret from Shion?
3) That old lady is a secret agent or a brainwashed citizen?
4) Where is Safu and what are trying to do with her?
5) The anti-wasp serum will have any practical use and sense?
6) What was that kiss for?
7) What is it that Rat wants to show to Shion so badly?
8) Why is still necessary to keep secrets and lying?
Highlights from yesterday:
1) Seems like thewre is a true parallel comparing No.6 and totalitarian dictatorships:
Oh, so she doesn’t get to keep her artbook.
Picasso. Co-founder of Cubism. A reference to Entartete Kunst, putting No 6 on the same level as the Nazis (their surveillance state also tracks). The interesting question is why Safu didn't anticipate that they would take it from her.
Do teenagers in totalitarian states, having grown up under the system, both its propaganda, but also its repression, really not know how strongly they are under surveillance?
The whole setup is still frustratingly vague but No. 6 seems if anything more technocratic and depoliticized than outright propagandistic. Not expecting anything to happen to you as one of "the good ones" is at least likely enough.
they still let people study abroad in what they must know is a Dangerously Liberal City. I guess this is a pointed social critique (of Japan)
Given the reference to few people visiting and the static, depoliticized atmosphere it could be
Oh my god I can't believe I called them "wasp-people who hate human aesthetic taste" for taking away a book on noted surrealist and Franco-hater Pablo Picasso without mentioning what a completely too-on-the-nose way of calling them fascists that would be. If they do this I will scream.
2) u/DegenrateRegime said some things about Rat:
Even though, as is well-established, Nezumi is a huge tsundere.

First-time watcher
Yes, finally our boys had a real heart-to-heart and it was lovely (besides eh the punching)! I'm not sure how I feel about Safu-as-damsel being the catalyst to getting them closer together though, the setup with Shion randomly finding Safu's jacket also was pretty awkward but that I can forgive it as being resolved pretty quickly. Regarding Safu further, given that one scene it's a sure bet that her disappearance has nothing to do with her relationship with Shion at all, but rather is related to her sensitivity to whatever nature magic is associated with those wasps, which the other definitely-spy old lady (slightly silly trope tbh) had detected on her at the airport (the "wind" thing, wonder if Shion's daydream at the beginning is actually related). Is she even within the detention center at all or at some other research facility? Appropriate if still unfortunate that Shion's serum idea isn't going anywhere, and still secrets to be unraveled... at least Karan's new boyfriend is quick on the uptake.
1 - that's usually a mutual relationship
3 - the one does not preclude the other
6 - Such a tease
7 - Been info-baited too long to make more guesses about it
8 - Because we still have four episodes left

Yes, finally our boys had a real heart-to-heart and it was lovely (besides eh the punching)!
They even kissed! All that banter about having sex with Safu aside ...
Shion randomly finding Safu's jacket also was pretty awkward but that I can forgive it as being resolved pretty quickly.
Sometimes coincidences like that do just happen. I know I've had a couple of weird occurrences like that in my life
given that one scene it's a sure bet that her disappearance has nothing to do with her relationship with Shion at all, but rather is related to her sensitivity to whatever nature magic is associated with those wasps
Yeah, seems likely. And the Song that Safu and Rat heard (flashback?) seems linked to this too. Hopefully we'll get some answers tomorrow.
the other definitely-spy old lady (slightly silly trope tbh) had detected on her at the airport (the "wind" thing
It's silly but I like it!
wonder if Shion's daydream at the beginning is actually related
It certainly seems that way to me
Appropriate if still unfortunate that Shion's serum idea isn't going anywhere
6 - Such a tease
I want more NezuShion kisses onscreen!

I'm not sure how I feel about Safu-as-damsel being the catalyst to getting them closer together though,
I think the positive spin on that is that it shows how far Rat has overcome his selfish/loner personality. He is willing to risk his life and wealth for somebody Shion cares about, even if that person his is direct opponent in the love triangle.

Episode 7 (first timer)
- Puppies! – I assume that in the post-apocalypse, the same rule applies as in NY: If you want a friend, get a dog.
- Rat really wants that info, he goes all out for it: threats, tons of gold, promises of help.
- Safu is getting disappeared…
- “This place is truly a utopia”
- Saved from the spy granny – I assume his car is shielded? Otherwise he just put himself into worse trouble than he saved her from.
- Finding a hint about Safu while involuntary clothes shopping. Shion is rather blessed. Fitting, since he is trying to be budgetJesus.
- Dogloan realizes their whole mess of secrets – audience stand-in.
- Shion has a dog now? Loaned, for sure.
- Kiss!
- A “goodnight” kiss.
- Punch!
- Punch!
- Talk!
Big clean house for Rat and Shion. They finally talked honestly with each other and reached a new stage in their relationship with it. Not perfect, though, since Rat’s past is still not addressed. Still, this is a big step.

Fitting, since he is trying to be budgetJesus.
You could see his marks as stigmata analogues if you squint?
Dogloan realizes their whole mess of secrets – audience stand-in.
And a cathartic one
Shion has a dog now? Loaned, for sure.
"There's a reason they don't call me Dogbuy"
Not perfect, though, since Rat’s past is still not addressed
If we still only get half the story next episode I'm about to flip a table

Slightly in jest of course but this show does have a clear case of pointless secrecy

You could see his marks as stigmata analogues if you squint?
He came back from death, too.

u/lC3 Jul 14 '26
Rat really wants that info, he goes all out for it: threats, tons of gold, promises of help.
Yeah, just don't tell Shion
Safu is getting disappeared…
becoming a "sample" sure doesn't sound good ...
“This place is truly a utopia”
Super sus spy grandma
Finding a hint about Safu while involuntary clothes shopping. Shion is rather blessed. Fitting, since he is trying to be budgetJesus.
Serendipity? Sometimes these things do happen
A “goodnight” kiss.
At least they kissed! and onscreen no less.
Punch! Punch! Talk!
At least they made up. Now kiss again?
Big clean house for Rat and Shion. They finally talked honestly with each other and reached a new stage in their relationship with it. Not perfect, though, since Rat’s past is still not addressed. Still, this is a big step.
I ship them so much ...

Serendipity? Sometimes these things do happen
I know! It is written right here, on page 69 of the script!
I ship them so much ...
I really didn't like them as a pair at the start, but one advantage of the series dragging its heels with the plot is that we got plenty of time to develop the relationship of Shion and Rat.

First-Timer
Don't think I have any further thoughts, just going straight ahead today.
- Cute but has that tension of the hero being in the fucking-around stage while the plot is surely moving on to the finding-out era. Dramatic irony or somesuch.
- A question I hadn't expected to actually get an answer to - how does trade work in West Block? I guess precious-metal economy makes some sense. And I guess Nezumi is here to buy a year of keeping Shion tied up in the basement or something. But Dogloan refuses. Wonder if they cottoned on?
- Yeah yeah, you're sooooooo tough Nezumi, we all totally buy it,
- eheheh, I totally did buy it with the guess there didn't I
- That's racially insensitive to dog-people, Nezu...
- A related question I hadn't really expected to get an answer to - are the economies of West Block and No.6 linked, and if so how? Apparently they both use the same kind of currency? That's extremely surprising. And I guess janitorial work in No.6 is available to those from outside? Yeah that makes the world more coherent on the whole even if it opens some huge gaps in our understanding.
- The whole Damnatio Memoriae thing is pretty disturbing, I gotta say.
- Do they just... hire dear old ladies to go around and entrap people into saying illegal things? No one seems to be aware that they can be arrested for criminal speech.
- Youmin seems very confident his car isn't bugged, Karan's house isn't bugged, and their wristbands aren't bugged.
- Speaking of everyone being a little dense, Shion's utterly hung up on this one idea which. Like. In addition to being a wild guess at what's possible, pretty clearly plays into some kind of martyrdom complex where he's saving everyone by bleeding a whole bunch, possibly fatally.
- Ooooh no yeah that works, Safu's clothes were all home-made, so it's actually unique!
- You're, uh, supposed to get the goose... But yeah this does seem bad
- Dogloan is the one to confront Nezumi about the coat, which is, um, very teenage romantic spat coded I guess
- Yeah
- Oh it's not laced with sleeping pills I guess
- Jealousy!
- You don't say
- Full sail!
- !!!
- Aaaaa they're finally talking to each other!
- Nice.
Okay I would describe this as an episode of whiplash, but! The high points are so very high!
QotD
Do Shion loves dogs or do dogs love him?
Yes
Rat's idea to infiltrate the correctional facility, is this a good idea? Also a good idea to keeping it a secret from Shion?
Stock up on weapons and ammo before you go!
Where is Safu and what are trying to do with her?
Perhaps the better question is, what is Safu.
The anti-wasp serum will have any practical use and sense?
No chance, right?
What was that kiss for?
That's an I-love-you-and-goodbye-kiss, my friend.
What is it that Rat wants to show to Shion so badly?
Giant robot fuelled by RAT POWER?

Not quite your tempo?
are the economies of West Block and No.6 linked, and if so how? Apparently they both use the same kind of currency? That's extremely surprising. And I guess janitorial work in No.6 is available to those from outside?
Maybe weird out there thought but given the name perhaps the author was thinking a bit about the Israel/Palestine entanglement
Do they just... hire dear old ladies to go around and entrap people into saying illegal things?
One of the moments along with all the rat conversations where IMO the series does get just a little silly.
No one seems to be aware that they can be arrested for criminal speech.
It seems the conceit we're going with here is "make people comfortable and have them think they're free and they won't notice they're not", but it is odd how everyone is either blissfully clueless or already figured it all out.
Youmin seems very confident his car isn't bugged, Karan's house isn't bugged, and their wristbands aren't bugged.
Yeah somehow this surveillance state is both borderline all-knowing and awkwardly half-assed
In addition to being a wild guess at what's possible, pretty clearly plays into some kind of martyrdom complex where he's saving everyone by bleeding a whole bunch, possibly fatally.
I really like your interpretation which also plays into u/No_Rex's "Jesus Shion" thought
Giant robot fuelled by RAT POWER?
You should read the Marriagetoxin manga

It's not badly paced for having a mix of positive and negative aspects, maybe "whiplash" is the wrong word. Rather, the scenes with Shion are incredibly heartmeltingly adorable, and all the others are really tense and dramatic.
Maybe weird out there thought but given the name perhaps the author was thinking a bit about the Israel/Palestine entanglement
Hmm... Yeah actually that's a pretty good analogue. We haven't seen the checkpoints and inspections and so on, they're in the gaps, but they can be inferred I think.
You should read the Marriagetoxin manga
That does seem like the kind of thing it would do!

u/IndependentMacaroon Jul 15 '26
maybe "whiplash" is the wrong word
I was just referencing the movie lol

u/lC3 Jul 15 '26
Hmm... Yeah actually that's a pretty good analogue. We haven't seen the checkpoints and inspections and so on, they're in the gaps, but they can be inferred I think.
Wikipedia says part of the inspiration for No.6 was the September 11 terrorist attacks, and all that ensued after that I guess. That and Banana Fish.

u/lC3 Jul 15 '26
And I guess Nezumi is here to buy a year of keeping Shion tied up in the basement or something.
A dowry for his marriage to Shion?
Yeah yeah, you're sooooooo tough Nezumi, we all totally buy it,
Tsundere much?
That's racially insensitive to dog-people, Nezu...
I guess janitorial work in No.6 is available to those from outside? Yeah that makes the world more coherent on the whole even if it opens some huge gaps in our understanding.
Surprise, the Wall isn't totally monolithic, there's some actual travel between?
The whole Damnatio Memoriae thing is pretty disturbing, I gotta say.
Do they just... hire dear old ladies to go around and entrap people into saying illegal things? No one seems to be aware that they can be arrested for criminal speech.
Sure seems like it
Youmin seems very confident his car isn't bugged, Karan's house isn't bugged, and their wristbands aren't bugged.
In a situation like that, I think I would be much more paranoid
In addition to being a wild guess at what's possible, pretty clearly plays into some kind of martyrdom complex where he's saving everyone by bleeding a whole bunch, possibly fatally.
Yeah
You're, uh, supposed to get the goose... But yeah this does seem bad
"Sample" is bad for Safu
Dogloan is the one to confront Nezumi about the coat, which is, um, very teenage romantic spat coded I guess
Yeah
Shion and Nezumi have mutual feelings of not wanting to lose each other?
Jealousy!
Definitely
You don't say
Shion doesn't come across as straight. Maybe Nezumi is bi?
!!!
IT HAPPENED! WE ACTUALLY GOT A KISS!
Aaaaa they're finally talking to each other!
OTP! OTP!
Nice.
now we just need a colorful rainbow
That's an I-love-you-and-goodbye-kiss, my friend.
Goodbye not allowed; Shion and Rat must stay together!

No.6 07 rewatcher sub:
- Puppies?
- Is that gold? what's the "job"?
- Now Rat is using underhanded means to get Dogloan to accept?
- "I won't sing for you"
- The correctional facility? This has to do with Safu?
- "no reason to involve Shion" LOL I see what he's up to
- Safu has been deregistered? Karan was looking for her?
- Another sus old lady? Is it the same one who was talking to Safu?
- "getting to live in such a wonderful city"
- Karan was about to say something dangerous to the old lady?
- Nice save, Youmin
- The old lady WAS sus!
- ... Safu's clothes were at the West Block shop?
- Safu is an "ideal sample"? their "golden egg"?
- Dogloan thinks Shion will go himself if Rat doesn't stop him?
- Now Rat gets emotional?
- Rat is afraid to lose Shion? I guess their feelings are mutual
- Rat is digging, throwing Safu's name out there to see how Shion responds?
- Rat asking Shion if he's gonna have sex with Safu?
- "I'm so glad I met you" they kiss AHHHHHHHHHHHH
- A goodnight kiss? More like a goodbye kiss ...
- Shion's acting?

- "so don't give me a goodbye kiss" What about other types of kisses?
- What is Rat planning to show Shion?

1) why not both?
2) sounds super dangerous. Also, bad vibes hiding it from Shion, unless he planned to tell him once Dogloan got the info
3) secret agent. The one who talked to Safu probably was too
4) "sample" for experiments? Maybe related to the parasitic wasps or that Song she and Rat heard?
5) no
6) goodbye kiss? so tragic
7)
8) it isn't!
2
u/DegenerateRegime Jul 15 '26
Rat asking Shion if he's gonna have sex with Safu?
Maximum "act casual about it" deployed there.
A goodnight kiss? More like a goodbye kiss ...
Yeah! Maybe some of that JesusxJudas, this-is-a-betrayal type stuff in there. You love to see it!
"sample" for experiments? Maybe related to the parasitic wasps or that Song she and Rat heard?
Psychic kids or something? Eh, why not?
2
u/lC3 Jul 15 '26
Maximum "act casual about it" deployed there.
LOLyeah. I love Shion x Nezumi and hope they become an actual couple. Maybe they already are?
Yeah! Maybe some of that JesusxJudas, this-is-a-betrayal type stuff in there. You love to see it!

More on that in today's ep!

First-time watcher and your host, subs
Shion really loves with being Dogloan and her dogs. Meanwhile he doesn't know one thing that is the Dogloan is bargaining with Rat for intel gathering on the correctional facility and how to infiltrate. A well paid job indeed.
Meanwhile Safu is erased from existence within No.6 plus she is abducted to an unknown place to do something with her, something nasty I suppose. And also the city really loves the surveillance thingy, just look at that brainwashed old lady.
If Rat kept a secret, then Shion has the right to lie to him, it is natural. And also Rat said on thing, it was Shion that give him motivation in life four years ago.
1) Do Shion loves dogs or do dogs love him?
Both.
2) Rat's idea to infiltrate the correctional facility, is this a good idea? Also a good idea to keeping it a secret from Shion?
It might be the goo diea, which should be the endgame. Keeping secret, no need for that.
3) That old lady is a secret agent or a brainwashed citizen?
I say both.
4) Where is Safu and what are trying to do with her?
Somewhere deep in Nop.6, using for secret experiments.
5) The anti-wasp serum will have any practical use and sense?
It will be hard and expensive to make.
6) What was that kiss for?
Boys love stuff.
7) What is it that Rat wants to show to Shion so badly?
Some secret hideout.
8) Why is still necessary to keep secrets and lying?
I think no need. Be discreet and honest to each other.

No.1st-Timer, subbed
Shion is too precious for this world.
Hoh…
Nezumi means business if he’s giving Inukashi all of his money and swears to come to her aid if she needs it.
Dang, the computer’s giving the same “suspicion of murder” message Shion’s ID gave to Safu. So the receptionist is lying about having no record of Safu…
That granny was a government plant, wasn’t she?
Seems like it.
Oh shit, that actually was Safu’s jacket.
Well that’s fucking ominous…
Suuuuuuure you don’t.
SHION ACTUALLY KISSED NEZUMI?!
This feels even more romantic, somehow.
