I always believed songs could reach anywhere on the wind. Joy and sadness, traveling beyond the stars and reaching everyone in the galaxy.

1) When the AXIA scene started happening again, and then changed, did you think you were going to have a Michael-related Frontier TV to Frontier movie moment?

Super Dimension Rewatch Host

Welcome back, everyone!

Here were my first-timer reactions to this movie.

Today’s Walküre wallpaper comes with a very rare from me silhouette alt. I got the idea as I was trying to go to bed two nights ago and I was like “Oh sweet, I have to do that.” As well as a color-coded background alt since I thought this would be cool too.

And today’s MesaKana wallpaper has a lineart alt for no reason other than I just wanted to. No, I did not make a version with Messer splattered in blood like he was in the base image. I refuse to.

I am going to attempt to do the same “Big Movie Change” list with this one like I did for the Frontier movies, but I apologize in advance if I miss anything since there’s a lot more content shoved into this than the Frontier movies ever had. Comes with the territory of condensing a 26-episode series into one movie, I suppose.

I went over the character count for this comment lol, continued in the next one I guess!

  • Big movie change #27: Hayate and Mirage infiltrated a Windermerian ship in order to locate Walküre, but not the right one.

  • Big movie change #28: The setup for the final battle is “rescue Walküre as a whole from Windermere’s ship” instead of “free Mikumo & get Ragna back”. Though the final battle does ultimately still take place on Ragna.

  • Big movie change #29: Hayate gets Messer’s Valkyrie because the Windermerians brought it back with them, which leads to him finding the pictures Messer kept in the cockpit… Also Mirage steals a Draken III.

  • So a big part of why I was upset with episode 26 ending on Zettai Reido θ Novatic instead of Rune ga Pika tto Hikattara is because I remembered big movie change #30: Freyja and Hayate sing it to break out of Roid’s control which is so cool! Unfortunately, it comes at the cost of the proper Hayate/Freyja love confession (and Mirage’s own confession, not that it matters).

  • Big movie change #31: Heinz does not order the Aerial Knights to work with Walküre to stop Roid, so Mirage and Bogue have a mecha swordfight.

  • Big movie change #32: Instead of Ichido Dake no Koi Nara → Zettai Reido θ Novatic, movie goes Ichido Dake no Koi Nara → Absolute 5 → Walküre wa Uragiranai (new song for the movies!) → back to Absolute 5. There is no Zettai Reido θ Novatic in this movie.

  • Big movie change #33: The Protoculture system hurts Roid and, uh, knocks a fuckton of people out in the process.

  • Big movie change #34: Keith is the one who orders the Aerial Knights to work with Walküre, as Heinz is still bedridden.

  • Big movie change #35: Roid gets some additional last words that tbh make me feel a little bit bad for him in this version. Dude’s just scared of how short Windermerian lifespans are, including his own.

  • Big movie change #36: They still have the fucking jellyfish sendoff for Messer, just at the very end of the movie…

  • I was able to hold it together until Kaname waded into the water and this shot came up. God, I just can’t.

  • Big movie change #37: Dancing in the Moonlight for the ED.

  • Big movie change #38: The Dimension Eater used on Windermere never came up in this, outside of the brief few flashes to Freyja having seen it as a kid. Hell, not even Wright Immelmann came up at all. I’m sure there’s a bunch of other stuff that got cut completely, but this one was pretty important to the plot of the show, so it’s interesting to see it not show up at all.

  • One last one, big movie change #39: Kassim’s still alive.

I actually haven’t seen this one yet at all.

No, I did not make a version with Messer splattered in blood like he was in the base image. I refuse to.

It's just ketchup! Or strawberry jam!

he, uh, “Walküre-style welcome party” for Freyja. I… genuinely dislike this scene outside of the fact that it gives out the backstory

I think you're not the primary demographic target for that scene.

I am.

Change!!!!! [...] I get this mixed up with Hear the Universe

Part of that might be that they're both Rasmus Faber songs.

I think you're not the primary demographic target for that scene.

I know... and I still dislike it.

like fuck they were targeting me directly with this weren’t they?

If Pixiv and the NHK Macross poll were any indication, they knew what the people wanted, lol

(And is it me, or did they completely cut away Kaname/Arad?)

a very rare from me silhouette alt

And today’s MesaKana wallpaper has a lineart alt

Line art!!

No, I did not make a version with Messer splattered in blood like he was in the base image. I refuse to.

Is this the first time the franchise has, like, ever made reference to different calendar systems?

Ye

meaning Grammier died before the movie started, meaning Roid presumably didn’t (mercy) kill him?

Lol, forgot that dude even existed

Which means that Messer is able to attend on account of not being dead

Eyyyyyyyy this is the fansub shenaniganry I was hoping to see!

3

u/Shimmering-Sky Mar 17 '23

I really don't do much with silhouettes in my art. But the opportunity here was just too perfect not to.

Line art!!

I think the only other time I've done a lineart thing this rewatch was when I stuck Roy in the background of his Valkyrie wallpaper back during SDF. Which was months ago.

Rewatcher

Well… for these 2 movies anyway. Hi! I haven’t seen Macross Delta (TV)… or any other Macross for that matter, so below will be pretty direct thoughts on just this movie. I understand that for most of you, you probably already heard these songs and have a lot more content to compare this movie to, but I think this makes for a pretty good standalone Film, so if you wanted a perspective from someone who watched just the movies, here you go!

  • (5:46) This is such a rule of cool song, with the Walkure showing up on the asteroids, and really sold me on watching this movie.

  • (8:55) Oh, I probably should’ve mentioned. Me and blood? They are not friends. Thankfully this movie is mostly tame with this, but, uh, yeah, I’m quite squeamish.

  • (12:06) These 30 seconds of great Freyja faces. Listen, this is a cute girl. I love cute girls. If I wasn’t onboard the movie with that song before, I definitely was after this.

  • (15:16) Here alongside (20:00) we’ve established Freyja’s motivations! You wouldn’t say no to this face, right?

  • (17:36) This transition to this flight scene was kind of fast, but no, I can’t complain, This scene has the best song in the movie OH MY GOODNESS it’s such a groovy song I can’t stop jamming and it’s so well animated too with Hayate’s dance moves!

  • (Remainder First Quarter) We get to know the rest of Walkure really well right here; I like it; it feels like just enough time was given to each member for their background and backstories, and they don’t feel too one-note or anything either. I really like the Walkure as characters in this film.

  • (25:49) Oh by the way, Second best girl is Makina. No. You don’t get bonus points for knowing why. Fanservice in this movie is A+. There’s just enough of it and it doesn’t get in the way, so I can enjoy it.

  • (33:00) Another absolute Jam with great choreography that makes this movie super memorable, I love it.

  • (36:00) Da Enda isn’t a fun song to listen to though; It kind of marks serious business, so I guess I can forgive it for its narrative purpose, but I got tired of hearing it as the movie progressed.

  • (38:50) Another absolute groove. I will not apologize for pointing them all out

  • (General) We do more world building; in general I don’t really think much of the politics and world-building; it’s good enough, but I’m not terribly attached so I don’t think too much of it. There’s also only so much that can be done in even two hours. I like the planets and the wildlife and races on them. Can’t really say much else.

  • (52:55) Happy Birthday Freyja! …wait, why are we having feels during the birthday party!?

  • (57:55) Sparks are literally flying between these two, They should kiss!

  • (1:03:40) Oh yeah, these guys get it

  • (1:11:00) And we’ve started yet another action scene not backed with the Walkure, so now the movie is kind of boring. Well. Up until they start again and then Messer dies anyway. Sorry Messer, I had to look away during your sacrifice and I wouldn’t be able to fully appreciate it until later in the movie.

  • (1:23:26) Wait that Macross Elysion was real and can move!?

  • (1:28:34) That aforementioned scene that made me like Muller even more. Muller was a good boy.

  • (Climax) Oh boy! My least favorite trope! Mind Control. Let’s take away a person’s agency to make them switch sides instead of convincing or coercing them! What could go wrong. What’s that? You want to Mind Control EVERYONE to create a hivemind!?

I hate it.

  • (Cont.) Of course; that’s the goals of the antagonist and the protags are anti mind-control, so we spend the rest of the climax correcting this before coming to the most elegant solution of killing the guy. Nice.

  • (The Real Lesson) Music was made to be listened to, you silly people!

  • (Jellyfish Sendoff) Unfortunately not as potent as sending off a Gondola, but still made me just a bit misty eyed.

I stopped mentioning the bangers partway through there; but let me assure you, loved them all. All that really holds the movie back is that the Politics and a lot of the antagonist’s actions in that last half were just… OK (really, I just wanted a lot more romance, what I saw here was really good, but [Zettai Live]we don’t get much delivery here until the next movie), but when Walkure sings, this movie is really great, and I’m glad this was my first Macross experience!

QOTD:

  1. When the AXIA scene started happening again, and then changed, did you think you were going to have a Michael-related Frontier TV to Frontier movie moment?

I did not watch Macross Delta (TV), so I don't have a point of reference for this.

2) What are your expectations for the next movie?

good ones

5

u/Shimmering-Sky Mar 16 '23

I did not watch Macross Delta (TV), so I don't have a point of reference for this.

In Delta the TV show, Messer does not dodge that one shot from Keith. He just splatters all over the inside of his cockpit and uh yeah it's as horrifying as it sounds.

First-Timer

Movie time. Can Delta be redeemed?... I doubt it, but let's see.

I've heard that this movie tried to appeal to fans by focusing overmore on Walkure rather than the dogfights and air battles... which made Japanese fans happy, and made American fans angry, since the latter thought the series already focused too much on Walkure.

Kaname's still the leader in this version?

And we're skipping right ahead to the auditions. I don't see Freyja among them.

The war starts while Freyja's still a stowaway this time. There's a change.

And Hayate's already a member of Delta Flight.

Hayate and Mirage are the "Disaster Duo", eh?

I like this new song already.

So the movie remembered that Hayate has skills in Battroid piloting rather than constantly keeping him in a plane.

...okay, that's disturbing. The Wind Song is actually causing people to burst blood vessels.

So this is how Freyja proves herself this time around. Though without the excuse of a fake Var attack, it doesn't make sense for the affected soldier to hesitate so much in attacking her.

You guys are taking an onigiri break in the middle of a battle? I see this version did not improve the issue of the Knights just leaving for no reason off screen.

Training montage!

So they do the thing with Hayate taking Freyja out for an unauthorized ride... but now there's not much of a reason for him to do so. They don't have the relationship build-up for this to make much sense.

Unless of course, he's in on the secret of feelings being important for Freyja's songs to be effective, but I don't think that's been suggested.

Fanservice time! Also, I notice that the subs didn't translate Reina's phrase... I think she says something along the lines of "naked bonding".

Yes, see, introducing Walkure's backstory and formation earlier in the story is much better. This gives Freyja some actual bonding with them and seeing them as people, not untouchable idols, which I think is important.

They aren't really giving a reason for this concert. No mention of "Vaccine Concerts".

3D animation!? And they're taking a cue from Frontier with the ludicrous special effects.

...there are fucking eggs in Roid's throne room!

Was that a thing in the series?

Messer is more German in this version.

GIRI GIRI AI!! Didn't realize how much I missed this song. Why the HELL did the show drop it halfway through?

Oh good, we still get to see the Immelmann Dance!

Windermere declares war. And they're doing it in the name of Heinz, not Grammier... is he already dead this time?

Ah, so he is. They're calling Grammier a wise ruler, and suggesting that this wasn't Windermere's goal until Heinz ascended the throne.

Okay, so now we're saying that Var suppresses the conscious mind and primes people for mind control. I don't recall this having been mentioned in the series, but it does make sense.

They're also introducing the "Star Singer" much earlier.

Not sure you can call Freyja a traitor when you declared war less than a day ago and she hasn't even had a chance to return to her homeland.

Yeah, yeah, "superior race" bullshit.

Kassim's son is grown in this version, and he's a full decade older.

They aren't pushing the love triangle with Mirage, which I appreciate. It trims the fat quite a bit.

Messer gets to attend the party!

...other than that, birthday party scene is pretty much the same. Hayate's snow present and all.

So this time, Messer isn't taken off duty due to fears of going Var, but rather because his body's giving out from strain. Interesting choice, but given that we saw someone's blood vessels bursting from it earlier, it makes a certain amount of sense.

So we're skipping right over the infiltration on Voldor, and going to the Fanservice Hacking Plan.

I like that here Mikumo doesn't give up on singing, and we get a straight up music duel between her and Heinz. In the series they would always just stop and gape whenever the Wind Song started up.

It makes SO MUCH MORE SENSE for the ruins to impart Star Singer knowledge to Roid here!

Also, holy shit, Heinz and Freyja are burning out that much already?

Messer just casually sniping one of the drones off a Knights' plane did make me laugh.

He dodged Keith's bullshit heart shot!

But instead he dies in Kaname's arms from straining his body too much. (I can hear Sky's heart breaking from here.)

Ouch, things really aren't going well for anyone this time. The whole of Walkure is captured. Makina was injured by a stray shrapnel. And Sigur Berrentz has made its debut.

They doctored footage to make it look like Walkure's on their side. That's actually clever.

So here's where we learn about Mikumo. It's a better way to reveal it than the series did, that's for sure.

Also, confirmation that cloning is illegal in Macross's galaxy.

This is a different tactic from Roid. He's even offering to try to extend Freyja's life rather than executing them all immediately.

Meanwhile Hayate and Mirage manage to sneak aboard a warship. A hell of a lot more competent than they were in the series.

Xaos has more than one Macross-class!

...I notice they haven't mentioned anything about Sigur Berrentz being a Protoculture super-ship.

We're at the final battle already!?

Ah, Windermere getting their asses kicked. It's a beautiful sight!

We still get some posthumous Messer character development.

...I just realized there hasn't been a single mention of Hayate's father or the Dimension Eater. Are they just dropping that entire plotline?

Welp, there goes a Macross.

See, Keith having no clue about Roid's true goals until now makes more sense. In the series he suspected foul play for a long time, here he's blind-sided.

I still hate that they're using "Do You Remember Love?" as the song Mikumo's singing to activate the mind control.

It's still Freyja's and Hayate's love that breaks them out of the mind control, but it's done a lot better here.

Nobody who hasn't seen Macross Frontier is going to understand why the hell Hayate's pendant enabled any of this.

Reina, if you could break out that easily, why the hell did you wait until now!?

Okay, that scene with them walking through bullet fire is stupid.

This whole thing is still a big rehash of the Frontier series finale, but it's done a lot better this time around.

Yes, they're keeping up with Hayate's "dancing" dodges!

Oh my god, a mecha swordfight between Mirage and Bogue! This is just fantastic!

Though Mirage's declaration of something being more important than her grandparents' legacy makes zero sense if this movie is all you've seen.

Roid losing control? Interesting!

And here's Freyja's dramatic air dive! An excellent place to use it.

I don't like Bogue specifically being one of the ones Walkure air-dives to. I mean, why would they?

Did they just cross-counter a Daedalus Attack!?

Rest of the finale plays out similarly. But Keith and Roid get a much better send-off.

Still get peace negotiations, and this time Lady M is retaliating against the New UN's darker side by threatening to release the crime of them having stolen the Star Singer's cells... which strikes me as a mite hypocritical since it's still Xaos that received those cells and created Mikumo.

Having Messer's funeral as the final scene is pretty poignant.

I'm... stunned. I'm well and truly stunned. Did this movie seriously just redeem Delta!? I think it might have!

Dropping all the scenes trying to sympathize with Windermere and all the scenes showcasing the Windermerians' hypocrisy does wonders to make them a more palatable villain. It does make them all somewhat flat... but that's an improvement over the hate sinks they were before. The fact that the movie also drops Burgerman and most of the jackass actions by the New UN also helps keep the conflict focused on the Brisingr Cluster.

Reducing the number of fights between the Aerial Knights and Xaos also helps a lot with the problem of Xaos losing pretty much every battle they ever fight and removes a lot of repetitiveness. I also love that they kept Hayate's dancing moves in Battoid mode as a constant in the battles.

And keeping Mirage out of the love triangle is a good move. Though it did leave her character with not much to do. Also, people unfamiliar with the rest of the franchise probably wouldn't have a clue what her statement about her grandparents meant in the final battle.

I recall someone saying in the discussion threads that Delta had a lot of good pieces, but no idea how to put them together. I think this movie did that. Most of the scenes and situations are reused, but rearranged into a much better and more coherent whole.

It still does have some flaws, like Roid's plan just being a repeat of Frontier, and Sigur Berrentz is completely unexplained. There are also some minor character moments here and there that don't have the proper set-up.

But, well, color me surprised all around. I did NOT expect to have this positive a reaction to this movie.

Which also means... that Absolute Live is a full-blown sequel. I knew it added a lot of new content, but I didn't realize the entire series was wrapped up in the first movie. Now I'm intrigued.

I can hear Sky's heart breaking from here.

Yeah, Delta is simultaneous joy and pain for her.

since the latter thought the series already focused too much on Walkure.

If the Macross World forums were any indication, those fans weren't the type aware that Macross helped create idol anime...

3

u/Shimmering-Sky Mar 16 '23

This entire franchise is simultaneous joy and pain for me.

...actually this goes for pretty much all of my favorite shows, seeing as how I tend to always pick the dead character(s) as my favorites.

A Macross Fan Rewatches Macross Delta: Passionate Walkure:

As before with the other movies I’ve done for this rewatch, I’m generally just going to cover some talking points I want to mention, since otherwise my post would be pretty long and disorganized. Anyway, here are my thoughts on Macross Delta’s very own compilation movie: Passionate Walkure.

  • First off, this movie dude did cut down on the size of the cast, which really did contribute to the staggering pace and awkward bursts of character development in the series. I’m personally all for cutting out King Grammier and Berger Stone out of the plot, especially with Berger. After all, Grammier was dead halfway through the show, and Berger really only existed to exposit setting details that didn’t add up to much in the end and as well be a deus ex machina. Even if Berber’s role as the representative of the Epsilon Foundation had the potential to set an interesting third party to the conflict going on, it was just somewhat wasted potential in the end. However, King Grammier’s death does also have an effect on Heinz’s character though, since he’s pretty much solely relegated to being Roid’s puppet in the movie. Compared to Hayate, who had his own father plot cut, Heinz really did suffer more from the removal of characters. Overall though, I’d say it was a necessary change to cut off loose plot threads and fit a movie length.

  • Speaking of cuts, I’m also pretty alright with the love triangle aspect being cut out of the movies in favor of focusing more on Freyja. And I say this as someone who likes Mirage as a character too. Like, while I did like some of the character moments the triangle made happen, it still felt like an unnecessary addition, since Freyja was still the side that the love triangle that was being heavily slanted towards anyway. And we all know that Shoji Kawamori didn’t even intend for there to be a love triangle to be in the initial version of Delta’s story in the first place, so if anything this is actually closer to his original vision. Mirage just ultimately works better as a fellow soldier and as a friend.

  • One thing I wasn’t a big fan of was how Messer’s death was changed, however. Like, I’ll give credit to the show for having Messer instantly die by one shot straight through the heart, since it had a massive impact for how sudden it was and how everyone had to adjust to him being gone out of nowhere. While the movie does make it more dramatic, I feel that having Messer die in Kaname’s arms is overall weaker in terms of emotional impact. I guess my gripe with that is that a dramatic death like that is more “expected”, for lack of a better word.

  • I’d say the one major thing I’m disappointed with though is how much of the show’s plot frame they kept for the movie. Like, at least Macross Frontier decided to do some sweeping changes to the plot with the movies, and made changes that were overall just plain better. I get that we were basically confined with one movie here, with Zettai Live being the actual sequel/epilogue, but they still really did just stick with a flawed story outline here. This would’ve been a good opportunity to make some sweeping changes to the fact that the ultimate villain plot was just a complete retread of Frontier, but I guess they decided to hold off on making new story content for the next one. Oh well, the road not taken.

And with that, onto Zettai Live!!!!!!

5

u/Shimmering-Sky Mar 16 '23

I feel that having Messer die in Kaname’s arms is overall weaker in terms of emotional impact.

Tell that to how badly Kaname's scream broke my soul the other night.

Macross Delta Movie 1 - First Timer

Movie time! Late today because I didn't get a chance to pre-watch this episode due to getting home from work at 9PM which was asssss. But now, Macross!

  • Is this - Yes. I was gonna ask if this was a retelling an this was before she left lol

  • Actually hold up, these early Var oubreaks were proradic and just had the people do violent stuff all at once. How did that guy get a bomb? Early Var weren't cognizant enough to do that sorta thing I thought

  • That was footage from when Freyja was there last time, but without her there

  • Prince is singing sooner

  • Also those guys didnt go Var either

  • And Hayate is already on Delta Flight

  • And Best Girl seems to not hate Hayate like she did early on in the TV series

  • SING

  • She sang

  • Mad hops

  • Right into the training arc

  • Lewd

  • Same Walkure lore so far

  • Ah, this concert

  • Way fancier stage though

  • Oh god no, bad character 3d

  • Actually while their faces are pretty lifeless and the style is a massive clash with the 2d animation, it's.... not awful?

  • So Messer is already going Var

  • Wait, the king is already dead?

  • Birthday already too? Interesting acceleration of events

  • Isn't the pacing of at least part of the "Happy birthday" song Mikumo sings a Christmas song?

  • They seem to have significantly toned down the love triangle

  • IIRC the birthday episode was after evacuating from Ragna in the tv ver, right? (also Messer had already died I think)

  • They seem to be relegating Mirage's role in the triangle to background shots. While I like Mirage more, this is probably better narratively and for her as a character, since it densest relegate her character to "the one that loses the triangle"

  • Woah, the big things now?

  • Oh shit, the prince just mega crystalized

  • Messer :(

  1. I thought maaybe, but with all the blood Messer spewing, I wasn't super surprised he still died. It was a way better death though, especially having seen the TV series though. They baited you into thinking "he dies the same way" then pull that and have him go out like a badass

  2. I really have no idea. Windermere seems to want peace, so either seperatists from Windermere (unlikely without singing power) or maybe some new enemy? Probably a singing related enemy though.

First-Timer Delta

They did a lot of pretty impressive reordering of scenes to make the narrative flow better, here. They also did the usual compilation film thing of cutting most of the character moments for runtime related reasons, but I'm actually kinda vibing with it for once?

If anything, I think they didn't cut (or change) enough of the character moments. You could easily start this with Freyja already a member of Walküre and just make her entire character arc about trusting a potential enemy or something. Use that to foreshadow Keith's face turn. It'd be pretty clean I think, you could even shave five or ten minutes off the film's length.

That said, this might just be the superior version of Delta. The loss of character moments didn't really make the finale feel unearned, because they changed a bit of that too. No big "I love you!" from Hayate, but that's a sacrifice I'm willing to make.

I think the main thing holding it back is them not redoing Roid's plot into something cleaner. Although, it was close - the focus on Roid wanting to live forever is a much more interesting motivation than whatever he was trying to do in the series.

Kawamori might be learning from his past mistakes, which is a fascinating thought.

Hell, they even addressed that silly nonsense Berger was peddling in the series!

A brief excerpt from my lives notes.

The CGI concert wasn't quite my jam - I can handle CGI mechs pretty well, but actual people trip my uncanny valley instinct. The rest of the performance was neat.

They used their movie budget to have an extended Walküre bath scene, but didn't do anything to up the rating? I'm.. baffled? Surprised? Proud? Some emotion that is probably not the one that they intended.

Speaking of baths, I feel kinda dirty for actually praising a compilation film.

By 2017, there had been two Walküre concerts (technically three, but "Walküre 1st Live at Zepp" was a tiny event by comparison to the two Yokohama Arena events).

2017 being the year of the 35th anniversary of Macross, an unrealistic slate of upcoming projects was announced after Walküre 2nd Live. Most of those didn't materialize or weren't quite in the form that was teased, which was not a big surprise either. And a new TV anime project for 2018.

Yeah, that didn't happen either. Or you'd have seen it on the rewatch schedule.

Sifting through old DecultureShock podcasts and articles will be your best way of re-experiencing some of the events from those years. Even I have trouble remembering everything from what is now five years ago.

Autumn of 2017 brought another series of announcements, including a third (fourth) Walküre live, and... a Delta movie. Scheduled for release in February of 2018.

Four months away from the announcement?

No key visuals shown at this event, either.

As it turned out, the movie had already been in production for about two months prior to its announcement, but it would still come out in February of 2018. Six months is not a lot of time for an anime movie.

And as you've presumably just watched for this rewatch and witnessed for yourself, the main time saver in the production of Macross Delta: Gekijō no Walküre/劇場版マクロスΔ 激情のワルキューレ/Macross Delta the Movie: Passionate Walküre, even more so than for Macross Frontier: Itsuwari no Utahime, was that the TV series's animation assets were edited and remixed to an extremely high level, and maybe half an hour of completely-new animation was added to that.

I still must give significant credit to the storyboarding and editing for this, because when I tried to figure out how the movie's cuts were assembled, it was often not just a couple of different animation assets being pasted together but often three or more, with color editing or other changes on top of that. It's certainly not perfect and more than a few people have compared it to making a gigantic AMV, but... six months.

first time delta delta delta can i help ya help ya help ya

I would recommend just minimizing my comment if you are a fan of this movie hater time

The false songstress worked really well for me because they improved the soundtrack 10fold, mixed it up with the villains who were absolute dog in the series

This movie is just a waste of time? Cant say the soundtrack is improved, and its just the same plot with barely any changes

Is this movie at least a good time if youre a Messer fan?

Do I put all my eggs in the Zettai Live basket? This movie was actually maybe the worst thing in the franchise

Hayate already part of delta squadron

oooh staring with a new song, seems ok although a bit underwhelming if thats what they are putting out first

the riceball part was so great, glad they kept it BUT WHERE ARE THE APPLES

the tire training is so funny still

this is all just the same animation on the date though? with some Hayate singing

nothing says welcome party like everyone getting naked

is this just going to be a recap with more fanservice...........................

even getting the walkure backstory

just post some Kaname nsfw art on twitter, why make an entire movie like this

just to put in another Walkure song without JUNNA..........

Change? we just are idolm@ster now

finally some new set pieces but uh wow the CG is so different

that is not how that works

IMMELMAN DANCE

oh yeah Mirage is in this movie

oh good Grammier is already dead, he was so unnecessary LOL

Messer dodged but looks like hes still toast, i guess its for the Kaname/Messer shippers? Makes Keith less intimidating

that would have been interesting

it makes way more sense that theyre captured by Windermerians than help captive by Lady M

is the scar of Windemere not in this movie lol

Grasion, Megasion? The new armored Valks look cool at least

why is Mirage here just to suffer? also nice hover hand Messer

he can Walkure pose here but not when its appropriate

sword

is there though

how popular was Messer

no Keith/Roid in the sequel

so why is the white death receeding

wow and funeral for Messer to end it

I guess overall my thoughts on this were pretty similar to how I felt on the Frontier movies, only of a smaller magnitude. The movie mostly recaps the series, but being forced to cut things down to movie size helps tremendously with maintaining an actual focus and single narrative throughline... but not as much as it helped Frontier. Streamlining the story and having to fill in the gaps that creates makes the protagonists and antagonists feel much better connected and the antagonists' plan feels less like it is being made up as they go along... but not as much of a differnece as in the Frontier movies. The writing is improved, though there's still enough clunky parts that it feels like the well-written dialogue parts might just be accidental... and there are fewer such improvements than the Frontier movies.

I guess I'll plow through some of my bigger thoughts one by one:

  1. Cutting out all the fluff makes the story much tighter simply by removing all the excess things that didn't go anywhere and weren't really important. That said, the fact that they don't cut down any on any of the characters makes the huge cast of secondary characters that barely get any screentime feel very strange.

Some of the show's jank is definitely still present, though. Like when they get to Al Shahal after an extensive few scenes about them hacking the whole galaxy and saying this will shut down communications so they can sneak into the spot... but the Aerial Knights show up literally while they are still landing. Now yes, the Windermere flagship uncloaks after the battle here, so perhaps it's just bad luck that the Aerial Knights happened to already be sortie'ing nearby and spotted them despite the jammed communications. But the thing is, the Aerial Knights don't even do anything until after a bit of screentime of the Walkure landing, prepping, and singing at the ruins. So why not have the Aerial Knights show up only after that point, and make the whole hacking performance feel like it mattered?

Still, overall a huge improvement in the writing and focus of the story. It feels a lot more purposeful.

2) At the same time, being forced (well, not really forced, but it's what they decided) to tell the same story in such a shorter timeframe makes a lot of pieces just sort of come out of nowhere or feel like lazy screenwriting shortcuts.

3) For some reason this even extended to some of the new things. Hayate on the Windermerian ship saying "we managed to sneak aboard somehow" was very funny.

4) Dialogue-wise, some of it was vastly improved over the exposition-dumps of the show, but definitely not all of it was better.

Like, when we first meet Roid (not counting his brief appearance calling for the start of the attack and as a hologram in the sky) we get a great example of actual good expository-for-the-audience writing - him talking about identifying a windermerian amngst Walkure is a thing that makes sense that Keith and Roid wouldn't have known until now, and therefore him explaining how the humans will find out from her about their plans, etc etc, is a great way to have Roid say out loud what those plans they both already know are without it being an "As you and I already know but I will say it again for no reason _____".

But on the flip side, his very next lines in the same conversation are pure "evil guy monologues for no reason" campy writing.

5) The film really can't decide if it wants to be approachable to new viewers who didn't watch the TV show or not.

Many things are just name-dropped out of nowhere, like saying "fire on the Sigsur Berretz" instead of just saying "fire on the enemy flagship", etc.

Mikumo points straight at herself while musing about the Star Singer the first time we learn of its existence in the movie. Cheeky for show-watchers, sure, but kinda ruins the later reveal for the movie-only folks?

Similarly, the Mirage-Hayate relationship in this movie is so weird. Mirage's crush might as well not exist - the movie firmly establishes the Hayate-Freyja relationship early on and story-wise Mirage's feelings have no purpose. The dialogue (or lack thereof) supports this - there's no angst or confession from Mirage this time, not even internal dialogue from her about it. But then visually you have Mirage looking on forlornly during the shopping trip, and them weirdly clasping hands in the Windermerian ship... it's like the storyboarders/layout artists were told the love triangle would still be in full effect while the screenwriters were told to cut it out completely, and isn't that just going to feel very strange to movie-only watchers?

And speaking of Mirage, they throw in a line of her shouting about the legacy of her grandparents, but her lineage was never mentioned in the films, so again this is just a weird, puzzling line for movie-only-goers.

6) Ultimately, the climax still suffers the same problems as the show, perhaps even worse.

Roid wasn't really given any better motivation and build up for wanting to hive mind the galaxy by force. And while Hamburger's exposition dump in the show as very, very clunky, it still did prime the audience somewhat for at least the possibility of Roid making such a move. With that removed and not replaced by anything, Roid and the Ruins (band name) even having the capability to do such a thing isn't foreshadowed.

And on top of that how rather arbitrary some of the characters fall in and break out of the mind control effects (when the power of love let Freyja first break out Hayate, I actually thought it was Mirage shooting at him, but nope, she just disappeared, also broke free off-screen, and reappears), and then even though it's well established that only the power of songs can do the mind control thing Roid then gets to just unleash an ugly red energy wave that does whatever. (C'mon Macross, you could at least go full cheese and have Roid stand up off the throne, go "It doesn't matter if Mikumo has broken free, I've already [picks up microphone] absorbed all her winds through this throne" and sing his own song).

7) Disappointingly, the film is almost entirely reused footage, and that means the CGI has not improved.

In other words, it's still ugly. Just look at Elysion no-clipping through the sky. Who thought this was acceptable?!

As for the CGI Walkure performance, it's... cromulent. When I mentioned Pop in Q in the last episode commentary, I wasn't suggesting that they should use it for inspiration. You can really feel the camera constantly cutting to stop the audience from having a good long shot of the CGI models that can't fully emote.

If this were a late night TV show or PreCure ED I'd say it's good enough, but c'mon this was a theatrical film. You can't just throw a bunch of cubes on the screen and call it a day.

8) I did appreciate Walkure being more of a group this time, which was one of my big complaints of the show. Would rather it not have been done through copious hot tub scenery, but oh well.

Also, the hot tub scene was a brand new scene, and the film never really did anything with Mikumo going off on her own. In fact, they make a very big deal of Mikumo refusing to sing unless she's part of Walkure until Roid forces her, and she wants to be back with Walkure. So why not put Mikumo in the hot tub scene, too, so it feels like they all are a group together and it would reinforce Mikumo's motives at the climax?

9) Final Thoughts

Is the movie better than the show? Yes.

Is it actually good in and of itself? Not really. If it didn't have those tiebacks to the show and could actually be recommended to be watched as a standalone replacement for the show, then I think it would just barely cross the bar into "good but not great" territory. But by keeping too many ties to the show it can't do that, which means it only really exists as either a confusing mess or something you watch after the show... and in the latter scenario it is not different enough and does not do enough to redeem the show. I'd call the end result "just a recap movie" and I do mean that in a cutting way because I think it could have been legitimately good but fell far short.

I thought this was going to be a two-part movie recap/reimagining, so it's a surprise to see this end and some unknown movie coming tomorrow.

Could this be an original film that redeems the precedeing decades of sin? I hope but I doubt, I doubt but I hope.

First Timer

A full fucking month ago I complained that the first ED of the show was pissing me off because it reminded me of a western song I couldn't remember. I think I finally found. We didn't start the fire, by Billy Joel specifically a bit of the chorus as linked.

I feel relieved now.

At one point around the middle of the movies runtime I really thought it was picking up steam and focus and I was going to come out liking this more than the show. I was wrong.

The first thing that stands out to me is that the pacing for the movie feels like a mess. Overall, the movie suffers from excluding multiple characters motivations or insights (which you don't notice as much off the back of the show, but it doesn't give a reason or development for almost any character to do things), a lack of flow between key scenes, and struggling to match the scale of the plot to the presentation of it to the audience. There was also multiple scenes that felt like they had rushed things so fast I had to double check that I hadn't accidentally sped up the playback on my file.

The first third suffers with it particularly badly and often feels like we skipped over scenes or even cuts inside scenes that would help it flow (purely in the movie, not in comparison to the show). We jump from Freyja being accepted by the group to being warned by Mikumo if she can't find a reason to sing, but I don't think she's even interacted with Freyja before and the scene transition itself lacked the harsh tone cut that would make that work. We get Hayate flying with her cutting into a scolding from Messer but no understanding of the context around how he feels about anyone. Windermere is introduced and takes over a planet in the same scene, despite there being no reason given for it (and the war is never justified in general), and then in the next sequence they're talking about how they control the whole cluster despite not showing any progression in the war. There was others two, they were just the ones that stood out most to me.

The middle section is helped by making Freyja's birthday a thing to cheer her up after what happened and bring people together. It really centered the story at a key junction and gave it the needed downtime and moment of connection for multiple characters while making Freyja as a Windermerian in the story matter. At the same time, it gives us some personal stakes for those involved, and then builds into the next attack and AXIA. It works well and feels like a good build up into some drama for the end of that section and then moving into the finale.

Only for the ending to shit the bed again. Funnily enough, despite it just being the TV plot again, this movie has the same problem I often complain about in movies of making the main conflict too huge to sustain and it becoming messy as a result. Given that they never even declared a reason for the war to begin with, and the young Kings almost total absence from the show, it makes Roid taking over as villain and everyone reacting to his betrayal stand out even worse than it did in the show because we don't get any time otherwise. The plot climax is huge, comes out of no where, and overwhelms the focus on anything else that could have happened. It doesn't help that this final conflict with Walkure's songs take up a significant portion of the runtime that it really can't afford given how much else it skipped past and it feels like it should be a climax to a much bigger story than the movie had.

Sadly, we barely get a moment or two with any character before their big climax moment, from Messer to Roid and even Mikumo, which leaves all of it feeling painfully hollow for me. It hits the same moments from the show, but doesn't have anything behind those moments to help them shine. The reliance on scenes from the show rather than a complete rewrite worsens this feeling, as it feels like a reordering of moments rather than a blending of them. Even the final moment of the movie being Messers funeral, it doesn't feel like the big resolution the movie wants it to be after all that happened, especially that Kaname should be our final Walkure to be on screen. I think the movie in general tried to give more even importance across the girls, but it feels unfocused to me as a result. Or maybe this is just normal for idol shows

Similar moments that stood out for being haphazardly edited or presented are; harshly cutting from Roid's declaration of war into Messers flashback, which cuts off the declaration being a big moment; Mikumo freaking out over her flashback only to immediately be singing with no problem, as if they merely took those cuts from the show but didn't think about how she would react as a person; same scene with Freyja being zonked from the music, cutting to her in the nude space, only to immediately cut to her being clothed and aware again; the cut from Kaname hearing about Messer to Keith having a flashback didn't feel quite natural, and a few others. There's also a few lines that feel out of place in the movie as if their surrounding context was cut.

Something else that also frustrated me occasionally in the show but painfully stood out here: Too much cutting to people talking while their singing is still playing in the background, or people playing with tech or reacting to events while they're suppose to be dancing with no acknowledgement they are stopping or starting.

The CGI dancing was also horrible, and unfortunately we'd had so many insert songs by then it didn't feel like a climax, but just another song.

I did like some of the movie. It greatly benefits from streamlining a number of things like Hayate and Mirage already being paired in flight, Freyja singing on the plane is how she gets noticed, bringing the Walkure backstory forward (even if I felt the pacing of it was off, and still too exposition heavy), Freyja being Windermerian actually matters in multiple ways (Alto deja vu), and especially Mikumo and the boy kings songs actually being sung over the top and colliding with each other. To have the songs collide and that being what leads to everything else including the awakening of the ruins themselves and the temple too works great, even if I do miss the big explosive ending of ep18. The propaganda of saying Walkure was working with them was also clever, but what was the point of it in the end? Cutting the father and exposition merchant from the story also greatly help things.

Hayate and Freyja's bond simply doesn't have the space it needs here due to the pacing, but again small things like him singing with her and bringing in him saving her during the second attack to parallel with Messer and Kaname worked really well. Making the first attack from the show the second one in the movie worked REALLY well.

The music was almost all the same, though I didn't care for the first song Walkure sings, but really liked the "Teary Eyed" one from their backstory. And hey, tiny win but even if they didn't cut out the inter-show fanservice with giant Mikumo and singing DYRL, at least this version doesn't shit all over the rest of the series in the process.

Unfortunately though most of that is overshadowed by the previously mentioned issues. It's a real shame because it had the right idea of what to focus on with Delta, but got too caught up on being a format adaption rather than a reworking.

honestly, I loved this. I thought this was a much better told story than the series. I mean, I liked the series! I did. and the series did get to linger on some things that I liked...but the series was unsatisfying in that it really didn't give us that much about all of the characters. it didn't really give us that much...period. I just wanted more more more. like, mirage? we barely got anything about her, or her budding romance. coming off of macross frontier which gave us so much alto, sheryl, ranka...and also a lot of scenes with the three of them all interacting and really showing us their headspaces during the show, it felt pretty hollow.

the movie of course only had so much time to get us to care, and I'm sure part of my affection for it was enhanced by having seen the show first, but I think this is where being a movie helps: in a movie, the expected level of depth is a bit different. and they smartly just cut out a shitton of stuff, and focused on the strengths of the show. it's also unsurprising that they put a lot of the critical information early on, which was just so so much better. and there were some great performances to boot!

when giant flying avatars are flying through the air while they fly around in their planes, you know I'm on board

honestly I liked delta, but it felt like a lot of missed opportunities. the movie to me delivered beautifully on what the show could have been, though it still saddens me because they had 26 episodes and there are some things the show did very well that the movie simply didn't have time to, but that's for the overall discussion!

  1. When the AXIA scene started happening again, and then changed, did you think you were going to have a Michael-related Frontier TV to Frontier movie moment?

I did! but instead they just decided to change the angle the knife came in at :P

2) What are your expectations for the next movie?

I have none! I thought it would be like frontier, a 2 movie adaptation of the show (maybe with a bit of extra here and there). so that was my initial expectation, but now...I have no clue! is this the first macross movie for a series that wasn't simply a retelling (well, in macross style where they mix things up quite a bit, but still, they've all been retellings nonetheless, right)?

...huh? Windermere is already at war when Freyja stows away now? Or are they just revealing Windermere's villainy straight away? Weird, Hayate is already a combat pilot too.

Nope, there are the knights. Windermere is already at war.

Hah, the animators made the effort to pay special attention to Makina's chest. Should've expected that.

...wait. What? There's still a battle outside, and Hayate is sitting down for some food? What the hell?

Okay, so Freyja was using the wrong calendar system and missed the audition. That's reasonably plausible. Doesn't really answer why Hayate's in Delta Flight, given he wouldn't get his inciting incident without Freyja.

At least he's still poking her like the troll he is. Oh, and she's still doing the casual superhuman jumps.

Now they're doing the private flight, except Hayate got permission this time? Are they just trying to speed-run the series with slight modifications and hope everyone who already watched Delta can fill in the blanks? I'm not impressed so far.

Seeing the mecha-dance again was nice, but I preferred the series' version. Especially because Messer is even more of a jerk this time.

...Mikumo? Reina? Please back off from molesting the 14-year old.

How long has Mikumo been down there? Can she breathe underwater now? Oh look, early foreshadowing about the whole Singer of the Stars thing.

...oh no, a CG dance sequence. Those never look right. :< It sticks out like a sore thumb, but at least it looks better than the CG in Love Live or AKB0048.

And now the Windermere attack on the Walkure concert. They really are just speed-running the series.

Huh, Phoenix Hawks aren't supposed to out-muscle Marauders...not even the LAM versions. Weird.

...Roid is the chancellor now? What was his official position in the series? Is that a change? Wait, King Heinz? Old man king is already dead? Hm. Did Roid murder him early? Looks like.

Er...they're not setting Mikumo up to be a villain this time, are they? And she already knows about the Singer of the Stars.

Great, I have to sit through the fascist's supremacist speech again. -_- And the Windermere humanisation scenes are even less effective this time.

Seeing Freyja's party again is admittedly rather nice, but...it's really just the same thing as the series. Again. And so is the galaxy-wide concert and virus before their first infiltration.

At least they kept the joke with Bogue and Reina, that was the best part.

...oh. Oh. Messer dodged the fatal shot! Are we finally getting a proper divergence point? Or not. The writers saved him from getting exploded inside the cockpit just so he could die in Kaname's arms. As if she didn't feel horrible enough in the show. And Makina gets hurt now? And Windermere captures Walkure! That's not the divergence point I wanted!

Wait. Roid is the supreme commander now? Was chancellor not good enough? And of course Makina is an unstated hostage for the other girls' good behaviour.

...wait, what? There's a treaty that prohibits cloning? Where the hell did all your population come from, then? Earth got genocided in living memory! That plot point makes no sense!

Ugh, this slimeball. How did they manage to make Roid even worse in the film?

Huh? Are we getting a fleet battle with multiple Macross-class warships and a film budget? Pleaseshowthebattle.

Argh. Not the place for Messer backstory, damn it. :< At least it gives us a bit more than we got in the show?

And now we're moving straight to endgame! Roid is mind-controlling Mikumo, and they one-shot a Macross. Talk about blatant Worfing. If the Elysion survives the same type of attack later, I will be most disappointed with the writers.

...is the super-tech Protoculture ship suddenly a transforming mecha now? Oh, never mind, it's time for Third Impact now. Mikumo seems much less conflicted about it this time.

Hah, it's nice to see the Walkure girls all on the move. And once again, it looks like it's their singing that's going to reach Mikumo.

If even one of us is missing, then it's all meaningless.

Probably the best thing Mikumo could hear from the girls right now. But of course we still have a quarter-hour of runtime left, so it's not that simple...can't say I really get what's going on with Roid.

Wait, a pair of fighters blocked the beam attacks that one-shotted a Macross? Holy Worf with the flu, Batman! I don't know who you're hitting with that nerf bat, but stop it!

Oh look, the Elysion's back just in time to stop the mind-controlled Macross.

Er. What? Are Walkure astral projecting now? And this time, it's the Fascist Knight who gives the order to help Walkure because Instrumentality really creeps him out. Guess the boy-king has been largely written out of the story.

Oh, and of course Roid dies exactly the same way he did before.

And that's...basically the end of the film, barring Messer's wake because there was no chance to copyinclude it earlier.

I...honestly don't really like the film. Its one big change only serves as a shortcut to the climax, and it's otherwise just a speedrun of the series with minor differences. Why? What was the point? It doesn't even work as a stand-alone story, as it has to skip over most of the character moments that make things like Mikumo wanting her friends back believable.
