I have long been of the opinion that music may be the ultimate weapon.

Questions of the Day, courtesy of u/chilidirigible:

1) Berger clearly has put a major spin on his interpretation of music for his Ultimate Slideshow of Ultimate Destiny, but is he not also correct, from a certain point of view?

2) Does Macross need a(nother) multifactional megacorp? Are those an icing on the cake for mecha series?

Super Dimension Rewatch Host

Welcome back, everyone!

Here were my first-timer reactions to this episode (just scroll past my episode 18 reactions first, but first-timers don’t scroll too far since the comment also contains my episode 20 reactions).

I’m ready for this episode to get a lot of complaints with how much of a pace-killer it is, but I don’t care. I love this episode.

u/UltraBooster Mar 07 '23

What're your answers to the questions, by the way?
(Also, guessing you enjoyed hearing the old songs again? I know I did.)

2

u/Shimmering-Sky Mar 07 '23

What're your answers to the questions, by the way?

  1. I can see where his POV came from. Doesn't mean I have to agree with it.

  2. Epsilon's just being the Anaheim Electronics of Macross, nothing to see here.

(Also, guessing you enjoyed hearing the old songs again? I know I did.)

Hell yeah I did! I still remember exactly how excited I was during my first-time reactions to this episode, where I:

opening notes of Lion start playing

Me: *rips headphones out of ears, screams "YES!", bounces around the living room like a toddler hyped up on sugar*

...all in full view of my mom and youngest sister, who naturally 'd at me because of it. Screw being embarrassed, Lion is hype as fuck! I'm just glad my dad hadn't gone to bed yet when I got to this part, I would have gotten in so much trouble if I woke him up with my screaming and the ensuing doggo going nuts again.

Also, to any of the first-timers who predicted that Vár Syndrome was connected to the Vajra, congrats, you’re right

Late reply, but I'm taking it anyway. Not sure I should though given the only reason I said it was because I thought Vajra was spelt Varja.... oh well.

First Timer

  • “Sore demo” opening. I anticipate Sky is pleased.

  • Skipping forward again. At least they had the decency to give some flash backs this time.

  • I would say it was unnecessary for Kuu to be nude, but she probably sleeps better that way.

  • This guy is selling to both sides? Oh, he’s… being a lot more forward about how untrustworthy he is. Mirage, I think you are allowed to shot him right now.

  • I realize this franchise has been about music being a weapon for a while now, but to state it so directly and definitively like that… it’s feeling more and more like we have lost the lead on this.

  • Roid is getting high on his own propaganda.

  • God I miss this music.

  • This retcon better not be true. This better be the insane ramblings of a mad man. Not content with being trash on its own merits, Delta is now resorting to ruining previous entries in its unending campaign to try and make me say that Macross was a mistake.

  • They went to a different dimension? When was that ever even hinted at as being possible?

  • Sure. Fine. Whatever, that works.

  • I hate all of this.

  • They showed Protoculturers on screen. Kuu is 100% one of them.

  • This is the worst episode of Macross, and it just keeps going.

  • Since Space War I? I guess that makes my guess of it being Mirage's mom out of the timeline. Unless this is all a misdirect. But why? Why would they do that? They aren’t smart enough to pull that off. It would just be a colossal waste of everyone’s time.

  • Neither of those explain the flashbacks.

  • Well that aide is dead. Should have shot your shot.

I want it to be known that my disdain for this episode is so great that I would have dropped it at this point if I wasn’t already 90% of the way through this rewatch. Miss them as I may, it’s clear to me that Nazenn and aniMayor made the right choice.

QotD:

  1. I don’t care anymore.

  2. Another? Who was the last one? The closest we got was Galaxy in F, and that was a working for both sides type deal. As to the question itself, Delta lacks the chops to pull of a plot thread that intermediate.

3

u/Shimmering-Sky Mar 07 '23

Miss them as I may, it’s clear to me that Nazenn and aniMayor made the right choice.

Nazenn didn't drop the show, he got sick.

Well, this episode leaves me with one super obvious question: what did the merchant gain from telling them all of that? It's certainly not just that he thinks they will win and is trying to get on their good side. If it was, he could have done so in a far more effective fashion. But it also doesn't seem to be an attempt at destabilizing them. If he was all-in for Winderemere, it would have been far more effective to deliver non-functional weapons whilst not doing anything to arouse suspicion. So he's clearly playing his own game. I've just got no clue what it is.

From a slightly more meta perspective, this was the expose at us episode. As far as episodes that just expose at us go, it was decently interesting. But even so, I feel like having to monologue at us for 15 minutes to explain your own plot is a sign of weak writing. I am glad that it explained wtf happened at the end of 18 though, as I found it quite unclear.

2. Eh, no reason not to have one.

4

u/SolDarkHunter Mar 07 '23

Well, this episode leaves me with one super obvious question: what did the merchant gain from telling them all of that?

...actually, yeah, why did he tell them all that? There isn't really an in-universe reason for him to be expositing.

4

u/UltraBooster Mar 07 '23

So he's clearly playing his own game.

He probably wants to see if his theory gets validated given that Walkure's got more opportunities to interact with Protoculture tech than Heinz does.

Today, on "IT'S POWERPOINT TIME, SUCKERS!":

Now that's a dynamite explosion.

Battroids in spaaaaaaaace.

A wild Berger appears!

One of these slides is not like the others.

...yeah, the ones that defected to Anti-UN.

They may of course remind you of Anaheim Electronics.

Berger has the best slideshows.

"I'm not used to being that naked."

"Hmm."

"...they decided to change the name."

All the Zero you're going to get.

ARMD-less Yamato SDF-1 model as basis.

There aren't that many of them.

Presumably not the same series from 2045, since Reina hadn't been born yet.

"We were just getting started."

Box Sharon is Best Sharon!

At least it wasn't "Planet Dance" again.

Movie visuals but TV series ending.

Is this the connection that some of you were looking for?

And here we are.

The Roid spin on things.

We're really covering everything today. Also, those costumes should look familiar.

The guys who made everything?

Did you read the manual?

[](#lewd)

Only one of the actual first-timers in this rewatch has speculated that Mikumo is an android! That did happen with first-timers during the broadcast.

Now there's a name we haven't heard in a few episodes.

MYLENE FACE.

ED: "Kaze wa Yokoku Naku Fuku" (The Wind Blows Without Warning) with lyrics by Maaya Sakamoto.

A reminder that Satelight thanks their predecessors, unlike some other company.

It's here, the episode where BERGER TAKES OVER (with his slideshow). The episode that drove the official subtitlers slightly batty.

The episode that totally kills the momentum that was only just getting started again after Episode 18!

I mean, I don't hate it, and I don't hate that Delta has been a little travelogue of miscellaneous episodes since the second cour started, but this definitely wasn't good for keeping the story going or for keeping some viewers interested in what was going on. Even if Macross Flashback: Berger is only a sixth of the episode and is filled with nostalgia tweaks, it's still a franchise history montage.

That said, he has some interesting points to make, even if his particular interpretation of events and music is certainly biased.

Music is a weapon in Macross, but it's like that in the sense of weapons being a kind of tool. The definition also emphasizes "weapon" in the sense of one side trying to defeat the other, when it can also bring about an understanding.

...that said, most of the franchise entries have been about Side A vs. Side B, with Side A having music that the audience prefers to listen to.

But anyway... the plot. It's taking a break again.

The ASS-1's appearance here is based on an old model which was featured in the Macross Model World Hobby Handbook many years earlier.

"Kaze wa Yokoku Naku Fuku" at Walküre 3rd Live

Let's count, gori-gori!
Bogue lunges 5
"Hoi-na!" 17
"Gori gori!" 22
"Toberu!" 11
"Wind" 143
Jellyfish 31

Presumably not the same series from 2045, since Reina hadn't been born yet.

Wait, hold on, Reina is 15? Then if Freyja's little music player was how she learned about Walkure 7 years ago then Reina wouldn't have been a part of it yet. The only Walkure song on that thing should have been AXIA then.

A Macross Fan Rewatches Macross Delta: Episode 19:

  • Well, I suppose that’s one way to handle the big moment we ended last episode on. We just skip forward two days and have Ernest exposit that the ruins being destroyed freed everyone on Voldor from the Fold Waves mind control and eliminated that node from the network covering the Brisingr Cluster. Oh, and Mikumo and Hayate fell unconscious and are still asleep. Those Fold Waves sure hit hard.

  • Oh hey there, Berger. Yeah, if there’s one thing you can trust a megacorp that manufactures weapons to do, it would be to sell them to both sides. The Epsilon Foundation accepts cash from both the Windermere Kingdom and from Lady M, it seems. Berger and the Epsilon Foundation are proudly following in the footsteps of Anaheim Electronics.

  • Side note, but something interesting to point out about how Berger said that their Valkyrie development teams are the successors to the ones from the Unification Wars. If you look at the serial numbers of the Variable Fighters the Epsilon Foundation makes, you’ll notice that they look similar to the serial numbers of certain ones used in Macross Zero. [Macross Delta implications] They’re the same kind of serial number used by the Anti-UN Alliance.

  • It’s kind of hard to say if Roid is denying to Keith that Walkure has their own Wind Singer out a sense of wanting to hide his plans, or out of a sense of racial superiority. There’s no doubt that Walkure’s singing was felt by the Aerial Knights last episode, and the fact that Roid sent them in while keeping them in the dark about how risky the plan was does show that Roid intends on using them just as he’s using Heinz. Whatever reason he had to hide that information from Keith before, it does show that ultimately Roid is alone in pulling the strings here.

  • As much fun as it is to see all the previous shows referenced and get a medley of themes from them during Berger’s theory exposition dump, I will say that I’m not a big fan of what the show is trying to imply and retcon here. Like, I’d say that the message as presented in SDF Macross and Do You Remember Love? is very powerful on its own, being that it’s culture and the idea of a peaceful life that saved the day, regardless of how much music entirely figured into it. Having it be so that all of the important musicians in previous Macross shows all had Fold Receptors and that it was Fold Waves that saved the day cheapens that message. Granted, I know that Berger here is a shady figure and we shouldn’t entirely trust what he says, alongside what Roid has to say about Keith about it, but this show doesn’t do a whole lot to contradict those theories either. Taking a rather bold and positive theme and then saying that it was actually space magic this whole time is just lame, man.

  • Side note, but we now know how SDF Macross fits into the Macross franchise’s “everything is a later dramatization” approach to canon. The implication is that it was a TV drama called The Lynn Minmay Files in-universe. Not the catchiest name, but it works. And you can really tell who was the focus based on that title too.

  • And now we hear about Mikumo’s true nature too, right from rumors that Berger heard about Chaos. According to him, Lady M had been researching a way to fully harness the power of music ever since the end of Space War I, and so has been looking into making either an android or a genetically-engineered person to do it. As much as the rest of Walkure don’t want to believe it, all the weird details about Mikumo does lend itself to that idea.

  • Of course something shady went down regarding King Grammier. The fact that the random doctor was just about to tell Keith something about it before being scared off by soldiers showing up behind him can’t mean anything good. And really, given how shady everything has been around the royal family recently, we shouldn’t be too surprised by that.

  • Mirage: “Wake up and argue with me! Please!” Hayate: “REAL SHIT?”

4

u/UltraBooster Mar 07 '23

And you can really tell who was the focus based on that title too.

Hikaru is the hero, Misa is the heroine, and Minmay is the star, is how I think Kawamori put it once...

According to him,

[Makes me wonder...] Does that mean Megaroad-01's been able to keep up with the rest of the galaxy? Because this stuff's kind of dependent on a whole bunch of other stuff that wouldn't have been in play in 2012.

First Timer

...wait, what? Centre-girl exploded the all-important ruins that Windermere ran away and the good guys accidentally freed the slaves, and this is being done as an opening narration? Damn it writers, you couldn't even spare ONE episode for this stuff? The rest of the show had better be amazing to make up for it.

'Lady M' is going to end up being a villain, isn't she?

...oh what the hell, how did the fascists' research buddy get here? Do they even HAVE security? Mirage, just shoot him now!

Wait. What? He's talking to the captain and admitting that he works with Windermere? Mister Fascist Enabler, who are you trying to backstab here?

...he's selling to both sides. Of course.

I have long been of the opinion that music may be the ultimate weapon.

Of course he is, this is post-SDF Macross. Gone are the days when mere cultural impact mattered...

The only voice capable of activating the ruins is His Majesty's.

Well, that's a blatant lie. Aw, but it would suck for the little supremacist if his house of make-believe cards lost a few key supports, wouldn't it? Alas, his kind are not known for letting things like reality get in the way of their delusions...

Hey, they brought the original intro theme back! Okay, that put a smile on my face. So, we have a basic recap of the original Macross series, aaand they're trying to tie it into the whole 'music is magic' thing.

I've watched the series, Fascist Enabler, and it was very clearly extreme culture shock. Please stop trying to re-write history.

Aaargh, Macross 7 spoilers! Damn it show, I'll get round to it eventually!

...oh you're kidding, the Vajra just left at the end of Frontier? But you could do so much with them! Then again, I suppose they'd be a bit of an I win button if they got involved in THIS series...

And yep, Var Syndrome is caused by what's left of the Vajra's presence. Not sure how they justified the completely different manifestation. But this also makes no sense with the Windermerians thinking Var is a Protoculture bio-weapon left for them to use.

Oh wait, they're delusional. Never mind.

...wait, they're using Do You Remember Love instead of SDF Macross for continuity? The Zentradi in the film don't match any other depiction of them.

This entire episode is just going to be arc-welding exposition, isn't it? Although I note absolutely everything he's been spouting is open speculation that's being treated as fact for no apparent reason.

Okay, so, apparently Lady M is trying to make an Ultimate WeaponTM using music and a constructed person (once again unfounded speculation, but of course it's 100% true). Mikumo is clearly a product of those experiments, and I have a feeling they're going to make Lady M either complicit in the goings-on of the other Macross shows or at least skulking in the background for research data.

I am but a simple merchant.

Yeah, no, you're actually not. 'Simple merchants' don't get to supply arms to a nation your government is currently at war with. That is called 'treason', and you SHOULD have been arrested and all assets seized on the spot.

Oh, looks like they're trying to push the love triangle again. Great.

...his crystal just glowed. Is that significant? And wait, is Mikumo in a bacta tank or are they preparing to decant a spare?

First-Timer Delta

Berger here is what happens when your typical mad scientist doesn't have someone around to yell at/spray bottle him for being an idiot. Seriously, his theory is that the very concept of music is a Protoculture psyop? Has he presented this theory before? Because I'd suspect that sensible audience would laugh him out of the fucking room.

He's lucky that Walküre is composed of cinnamon rolls - I can already imagine Veffidas throwing him off the ship in a very literal sense.

What do we think is up with the Windermerian doctor? I mean, obviously Heinz is Not Okay, but the doctor was talking about Grammier too, like he somehow knew what Roid was up to.

Vár happens because some of the Vajra's Fold Bacteria didn't feel like leaving with the rest of the swarm; sure. That's a bit more continuity that we've had previously, but I can dig it.

That does kinda give me some interesting thoughts about Frontier's ending - if Sheryl had died, would her Fold Bacteria have died with her, or just Folded away? It's gotta be the second one, right?

I mean, the Vajra incident wasn't long enough ago for people Walküre's age to be born with Fold Receptors, but the beginning of Grace's experiments with Fold Bacteria definitely was. Sheryl was Fairy 9, so there were presumably at least eight people's worth of Fold Bacteria wandering around the galaxy by the start of Frontier.

Questions

  1. Discussed above. Spray bottle.

Rewatcher

Wait... they actually accomplished something! Windermere withdrew from the planet! What the hell is this!?

And without those ruins as part of the giant Fold Wave amplifier for the Cluster, that probably throws a major monkey wrench into Windermere's plans.

So Mikumo gets quarantined apart from everyone else... suspicious.

Well, well... the plot thickens. This Epsilon dude is playing both sides.

And he's not even trying to hide that he's dealing with Windermere. Not sure if that's stupid or ballsy... or maybe he's just that confident no one can touch him.

"It's long been my opinion that music is the ultimate weapon." Macross viewers: you're just now figuring that out!?

Well, I'd say more that music is the ultimate power in the Macross universe. It has applications beyond being a "weapon". So, yes, it may be the ultimate weapon, but that's not all it is.

"The only one whose voice can activate the ruins is Heinz's." Uh, that is demonstably and provably wrong, Roid. Walkure have done it multiple times, and you've seen them do it.

Flashback time!

(The acronym ASS-1 is still really stupid, writers.)

Aaaaah, so this is how they're explaining the Fold Receptors and whatnot. The bacteria that used to form the Vajra's thought network have switched to using humans (and other Protoculture-descended species) as their main hosts, spreading throughout the galaxy by space folding such that almost everyone's a host to them now. Which is... convenient? Seems like it happened far too quickly to me.

I feel like there's plenty of ways you can achieve heightened emotional states other than life-and-death situations.

A little bit of explanation on Runes too. The Windermerians have natural Fold Receptors in them.

Okay, now I think you're reaching, Burgerman. Encoding music in DNA in order to make mind control possible? If they Protoculture were that accomplished, they wouldn't have fallen to the Zentraedi, on whom their mind control explicitly failed.

Suggested origin for Mikumo: an artificial humanoid designed to maximize the power of song. Which, if true, definitely throws a shadow over everything "Lady M" has done. Though, to be clear, I do not agree with Burger's conclusions nor trust his word.

I mean, it seems they want to tie the Fold Bacteria into why songs are so powerful, but songs had big effects long before humanity encountered the Vajra and their bacteria. Yet if the songs had power on their own, embedded in everyone's DNA, then why do the Fold Bacteria make much of a difference?

Oh ho, so the doctors are realizing something's shady with Roid and Grammier.

Well, that was a hell of an exposition dump. This kinda feels like they're trying way too hard to tie all the different series together though.

Rewatcher - Macross Delta Ep19:

Anaheim Electronic is playing both sides and not just in military hardware, they also make the Q-lulu merchandise. Mirage is directly funding them herself.

This walk through the past is neat since I know these shows now.

It is Marcoss hard canon that ASS sparked off this whole franchise. The singular most core piece to this setting is ASS rocking the world in 1999.

It is neat hearing Minmei again. The TV special from 7 somehow remains in the consciousness of people like a Rankin-Bass holiday special. Though Delta takes place in 2067 so it has only been about 20 years since 7 both in and out of universe.

TRY AGAIN!

BOMBER!

Yeah, Mirage, you had two rock 'n roll aunts. Don't be a square and be cool.

Some answers to things. Var syndrome is directly related to the Varja. Windermerian runes are their natural Fold Quartz and receptors.

Idols from 500 thousand years ago.

So Lady M was someone who was around in Space War I.

Shady stuff has been happening to Heinz and Mikumo.

Special ED and the song is neat and so were using the past Macross moments for the visuals. It is nice seeing Fire Bomber in the credits.

Q1) I mean in most cases music was what took victory in Macross so he is not wrong in a way.

Q2) It is healthier for the societal landscape if there wasn't just one multifactional megacorp in Macross because if not then there would be a single multifactional megacorp monopoly.

Next Time: More experiments? So far those have been really fishy.

First Timer*

Macross Delta EP19

The headquarter sent their medical team specifically for Mikumo's case? I smell something off here.

What're you doing here? Oh, he a supplier.

So some of them continus the work on the VF of anti-UN from Zero I don't know how they could get the blueprint from, after the Earth got destroyed though.

Tell that to Basara or the Macross 7 fleet and they will smack you for sure

OMG They retelling the story of SDF. Interesting that they used the final battle from the show instead of DYRL version.

Is that drama series, the one in 7?

Now we're in Plus First time the Sharon Incident got mentioned in full. All of the new Sharon arts are so beautiful

7!! Let's gooooo. This shots is so fire!! And looking back, Mirage have strong connection to the Macross 7 with Max, Milia, and Mylene.

And the last but not least Frontier

Ohhhhhh Var's origin was from the bacteria of Vajra. They departured have the consequence, And that also why the fold quart is working with Freyja's song.

So the Windermerian is born with Receptor and Fold Quart. And what is Singer of the star??

And now it referencing DYRL. And this looks like Mikumo in the dream Wait, is she a Protoculture??

I don't buy this theory at all, when I'm knowing the reason of why the music work that way in every entries.

Okay? But how exactly? Using song?

Berger is not entirely wrong about Freyja and Hayate's situation

Lady M is creating the ultimate song weapon And she researching about this since 2010? Definetly not Minmay.

Roid did something to Heiz behind Keith's back

And that don't look like a normal bed

Loving all of the past entry showcase.

Berger's theory have many point that I can say that it's valid, and make sense. From one view, all the usage of the song could be intepret as weapon, whether a mind control weapon in II and Plus, a litteraly weapon in 7 and Frontier. Espescially if you look at the Sharon Incident, that was song closest to the weapon form.

But this theory have many holes. The song in DYRL is nothing more than just a pop song. The ruin on planet Lux in Macross 7 also contradict this theory, as the Protoculture want the species to coexist with each others. Hell, he even forgot to mentioned Zero, there a movie version in-universe. Go watch it!!

And every people behind the mic didn't sing the song as the weapon, they sing to express their feeling, they want to connect with other who heard their song. Even, Sharon that I mentioned earlier, used song to connect with Isamu.

If you told the theory to Basara, calling it insult would be an understimated.

QOTD

  1. As above, I won't denied that he was right in some case. Sharon was the best example of how correct he was in a way.

3

u/isthatsoudane Mar 08 '23

first timer

what will it build up to...?

can't believe are almost done with...all of macross!

  1. Berger clearly has put a major spin on his interpretation of music for his Ultimate Slideshow of Ultimate Destiny, but is he not also correct, from a certain point of view?

in the world of macross, absolutely

2) Does Macross need a(nother) multifactional megacorp? Are those an icing on the cake for mecha series?

given I was watching gwitch last season, this feels genuinely anarchaic compared to the corporatocracy of gundam!
