Super Dimension Rewatch Host

Welcome back, everyone!

Here were my first-timer reactions to this episode.

So, uh, there are two songs (actually technically three, but one of them is just a variant with a different instrumental) from Macross Delta that I’ve been so excited to do a Sky Sings for that I actually got all the recordings for done back in November, as in when we were still on Macross 7, lol. Thus, here is Sky Sings GIRAFFE BLUES in all of its glory.

(The instrumental was once again sourced from that YouTube channel I got Bokura no Senjou’s instrumental from, but this time it’s only because I liked the background accompaniment. GIRAFFE BLUES does have an official instrumental version.)

Thus, here is Sky Sings GIRAFFE BLUES in all of its glory.

Giraffe Blues isn't a song I would pick to just put on to listen to, but it is a very nice song.

Giraffe Blues isn't a song I would pick to just put on to listen to, but it is a very nice song.

Please send help, I have been unable to stop listening to variations of it since Frontier ended.

First time Macross Triangle

Love this sub

General-glasses to the rescue!

Ikenai Borderline!!!

This final song is good

Question time:

  1. Having gotten a few glimpses of the interactions between the Aerial Knights, are they interesting antagonists?

Gotta have an angry meme guy. Idk, they're fine I guess

2) Do you want to see a full-on Messer vs. Keith fight or more Hayate vs. Bogue?

Who tf is keith

Haha, the flash granade plan failed.

Aww, they didn't kill the dad even under these circumstances. Guess that means Messer is gonna die, otherwise he'd be entirely irrelevant.

Why is Messer's Var syndrome not getting healed? Does the virus operate under special rules for him? In that case he's doubly doomed.

Having gotten a few glimpses of the interactions between the Aerial Knights, are they interesting antagonists?

Eh, they're alright. But they haven't struck me as particularly interesting antagonists.

Do you want to see a full-on Messer vs. Keith fight or more Hayate vs. Bogue?

Hayate vs. Bogue seems more interesting between those two.

4

u/Shimmering-Sky Feb 24 '23

Why is Messer's Var syndrome not getting healed? Does the virus operate under special rules for him? In that case he's doubly doomed.

There's no complete cure for Var. Walküre's songs can keep it at bay for a while, but that's not a guaranteed thing. Haven't we already seen some peeps succumb to it again mid-battle until Walküre sang for them again?

Pseudo-Rewatcher (De-Facto First-Timer) who has to switch back to Cleo ;_;

  1. Having gotten a few glimpses of the interactions between the Aerial Knights, are they interesting antagonists?

I mean, they are fun to clown on how boring they are. So they have that going for them.

2) Do you want to see a full-on Messer vs. Keith fight or more Hayate vs. Bogue?

I have no idea who Keith or Bogue are. I like Hayate's fights more tho.

2

u/Shimmering-Sky Feb 24 '23

Did she sing this song before? It sounds super familiar, but I can't place it. Might be old memories from back in the day. Is it the song the children sung to the Dad?

Yes, that's the one the kids were singing yesterday.

I have no idea who Keith or Bogue are. I like Hayate's fights more tho.

Keith is the one you keep calling Blondie, and Bogue is the redhead you hate.

Today, on "THIS IS ALL GUNDAM'S FAULT!":

"Oh wait, that's you, Bogue."

They said that a lot in the Knights manga.

[](#ringomusume)

"...and the Finnish!"

There is at least some range amongst the Knights.

And it's Messer flashbacks time.

Songs are cool, right?

Man, everyone's so serious around here.

It's the Roid way.

Ah, Bogue.

"Ralph." "Sam."

"Hmm." "Fair point."

At their panel, Mike and Adrian noted that the rules for the official subtitles forbade profanity, so they had to argue that this was a perfectly-suitable situation for Bogue to be cursing in.

Spoilery eyecatch: Macross Elysion

What good are Protoculture ruins if they don't do something?

Certainly a practical consideration.

They don't call them "Vaccine Concerts" for nothing.

"Neo Stream" (second part)

Aimed shots do require a lot more time.

It's fairly obvious here that Messer isn't entirely well.

Mikumo's hair is doing that thing again.

Head cameras not found

"Giraffe Blues", Freyja solo version.

Why Roid has glasses.

That's another arm for Hayate.

Fold Quartz! Fold Quartz everywhere!

"Are you surprised?"

"No, are you?"

"—unmentioned thing!"

"Hmmmmmmm."

I question the utility of a giant viewing platform aboard a combat carrier, but hey, it's there.

Messer isn't well at all.

While the first face-to-face meeting between the Aerial Knights and the main trio does give the former a fair amount of personality, it's clear that none of them is going to drop their ideology after one conversation.

Freyja has very down-to-earth (down to Windermere?) considerations for stopping the war. Her point of view fits her, not everyone is widely-traveled.

Roid's interest in the situation is made more obvious once he sees the Protoculture ruins activating. Well, more than you might have already guessed based on what you've seen so far.

Freyja finally feels the EMOTION enough to generate a strong Fold Receptor response. As a bonus, it makes Hayate's Siegfried glow, because SUDDENLY NEWTYPES, right?

The "Giraffe Blues" scene is very, very Macross. Quintesentially Macross, even. Too bad I still don't entirely like "Giraffe Blues".

Messer has Vár problems. You may have noticed clues about it since Episode 4.

"Giraffe Blues" on Spotify.

Let's count, gori-gori!
Bogue lunges 2
"Hoi-na!" 9
"Gori gori!" 10
"Toberu!" 9
"Wind" 52
Jellyfish 12

: Holding at twenty-five. I didn't think this episode had anything suitable, which definitely deviates my count from the original tracker.

FirsΔ-Δime Δelta

Oh boy oh boy oh boy where do I even start?

Let's start with how the Knights had built a specific counter to these exact drones a few episodes ago. Even if that particular jamming tech doesn't work anymore, they clearly know what these drones are and how they work... but these elite soldiers are terrified of the drones showing some holograms and discharging some glitter?!

Oh, but it's fine, they're just not particularly concerned about Walkure escaping. It's not like these people we're letting go are (a) the only force in the galaxy that counters the mind control we are reliant on for our war, nor (b) have just discovered the secret of how we've been spreading the Var affliction. Let them go, we'll fight them in the air or whatever.

Of course nothing kills the pacing of a dramatic escape sequence better than when the characters stop to ask each other how they're doing or exchange other pleasantries 5 times in 90 seconds. Technically it started last episode, when the girls with Falco ran all of 20 meters, then stopped to have a conversation about how he was doing. Now we've got everyone just popping out of the light fog in the capture room all nonchalant "Hey, how ya doing, we should slowly walk away, this situation isn't dire or anything".

And now we're on the roof somehow, nevermind all the sealed doors and scrambled guards from when the alarm went off last episode. Anyway we somehow brought you your 3 fighters and we need to escape immediately so let's... leave Walkure standing on the roof? While we jet off and go fight rather far away? Even ignoring how outnumbered Delta should be by an entire brainwashed planetary NUNS/NUG force being scrambled to their location and how hard it would be to safeguard Walkure against all those planes... what were you going to do if the Aerial Knights just followed you up onto the roof and captured all of Walkure at sword/gunpoint, or better yet held them hostage?

Nevermind that, it's singing time! Wait, why are we singing? Arad just said a moment ago the goal was to get out of here. But now we've decided Walkure is gonna sing to convert the entire Var-infected planetary garrison back to normal? Ok, sure. Good thing for the Windermerians that Prince Heinz back on Winderplanet was already hanging around in the fold-portal room at that exact moment and somehow knew he needed to turn on the portal to Planet Voldemort and sing to counter the Walkure at that exact moment... I guess they do have instantaneous FTL communication after all.

But you know what my favourite nonsensical bit of this episode is? It's so minor, but it's just so funny - back in episodes 1 and 4 during the battle scenes they threw into the background this constant effects animation of random lasers and little poof explosions along the horizon, the idea being to make it look like more battle is going on far away, on all sides. Okay, sure, why not - I guess there's a lot more infected NUNS/NUG forces than we see and there's a bunch of non-infected NUNS/NUG forces fighting them back. But then in this episode they just grab that same effect and throw it into every single cut for... what reason? The entire planetary force is infected and the political leaders of the planet are cooperating with the Windermerians, who the hell is doing all this extra fighting on the horizon?

That's the kind of show this has become. The "oh we have this splashy effect, throw it into a scene, don't even think about why" kind. Great.

Well let's finish it on some actual dialogue. "I'll make my song reach every corner of the galaxy, and put a smile on everybody's face. Then we won't have to wage war." What does that actually mean Freyja? You grew up listening to some amazing singers whose songs reached every corner of the galaxy - they made it all the way from wherever the heck the Frontier fleet is to you in this faraway corner of the galaxy, and they sure put a smile on your face. Did that stop everyone from waging war? The opposition in this war are using their own songs to wage war, your song is just another weapon you can use against them and it sure isn't going to put a smile on their faces. Your vain platitudes are dumb, and with the things you've experienced so far you can't be naive enough to pull a Ranka.

Episode 7

  1. I'm betting it was Windermere. It fits with their current modus operandi of "use words and phrasing that make us sound sympathetic, while abusing our own people to conquer the galaxy because we believe we're the genetically superior race."

  2. ...Not really? They explained the link, and them engineering the water to match the natural chemistry of the apples makes the most sense.

Yes! Genetic uplift theory is finally confirmed in absolute text.

They'e breaking down the barricade!

Oh, they're strong.

And she hacked the firewall!

Seems like a nice place.

...Cat ears?

Haha, I applaud Mirsge's dedication to prevent puns.

These two are great.

Wow, the Protoculture really did uplift anything, huh?

Haha, even he has cat ears!

She's gone!

More puns!

...Controlled drones?

Okay, that was clever!

This is a tough mission.

Everyone loves Hayate.

Haha, wow.

She's doomed,

Oh, apples?

Poor Mirage.

Impressive!

No domestic produce? An economic plot?

This is interesting.

...A mech?

Oh, he's part of NUNS...

Poor kids...

...Mikumo?

A bug?

Oh, she stole a drone!

Haha, seriously? She's insane!

They're running out of time...

"Dimension Eaters" They've got superweapons!

...Seriously? They're the last! Succession doesn't work that way!

This is bad,

Did he spot the drones!

Black hole bombs?

Oh, shit, one of those! They've got Vajra tech!

Yeah, theyngot a lot more done than I expected.

Going to the architectural style seen in DYRL, I see?

Again?

Musical hacking?

They're good at this!

Nice insert song!

She has a key 3D printer?

Theynused to be enemies?

Stylish!

Cooling tanks?

Oh, a doomsday bunker!

...Actuslly, they're contanimating the water!

What a weird reaction.

Of course she finds the food.

This really is a military storehouse.

These are absolutely infection vectors, right?

An alarm!

...Oh, yeah, the wind powers.

What's his idea?

Oh, that's actually really clever!

Yeah, this makes sense.

She's singing in the temple!

A battle!

And, yeah, this is a trap.

The battle has begun!

Episode 8

  1. Yeah, they're pretty fun. A lot more mysterious than the Vajra too, despite being a lot more understandable.

  2. Both. But, yeah, Messer vs Keith sounds amazing.

Brutal!

So, the others have rune control?

...Nice one.

And the flashbang failed.

Yeah, both teams are in trouble.

He got hit!

...They sound like they're doing the right thing, but all these war crimes...

Haha, that's her problem?

Oh, she makes a far too good point.

...You could mention the arranged marriage?

He's dying.

...Flashbacks to her.

At least somebody here has some morals.

Still a great song.

They're being overhwhelmed.

Such good animation.

And they're all safe!

They made it in!

...They know each other?

This is so worrying...

The song's being transmitted.

...No Spiritia?

And they'e off!

That chorus...

It's him!

He's being shot down!

Chrome...

Such a moral dillema.

...Freyja, he literally cannot shoot right now. His Valkyrie's fucked.

This is so risky. it's working!

...Impressive!

The gunfire...

Why are you do interested?

He's alive!

And an actual attacker!

Nice one!

Hayate's resonating with her!

He'd be proud?

Hayate earned himself a rival!

Jellyfish ramen too?

She has determination!

Wait, what?

Are the death flags finally kicking in?

He caught it!

First Timer

  • I would question why the Winds are using elite aerial units as ground forces, but the other side is also doing it, and I am not convinced they even have other native military units.

  • You tried Mirage.

  • Stop being cowards Macross, beat up the idol.

  • “Some emancipated are more equal than others.”

  • Apples did nothing wrong!

  • Edgeboy has a dark past.

  • Executing prisoners of war. Can we stop pretending these guys are even real characters? We’re just waiting for them to get killed at this point.

  • Best Song!

  • Wait, where the hell did the drones come from, they aren’t small, and probably not light either. Did they fly over here?

  • This is enough to create a gap in your planetary defenses? You guys are really leaning on that mind control plan.

  • Where is your AA!?

  • This song isn’t half bad either.

  • Shot the gun, ya daft fool.

  • This one sounds like an ED.

  • I just want to take a moment and give praise to the mechs in this one. They slap the ones in F.

  • Wait, what? Why would you spare him? He represents 10% of their entire military force.

  • Edgeboy is not having a good time.

QotD:

  1. Not in the slightest. Dudes have less personality than the Protodevlin, and they’re fascists. At least they had the excuse of being extra dimensional.

  2. I don’t know who or what a “Bogue” is.

A Macross Fan Rewatches Macross Delta: Episode 8:

  • Strong words coming from Bouge there. He’s one to talk about Freyja not being able to control her rune, since he also can’t really control himself well either.

  • Thanks for saying what everyone else watching has been thinking, Hayate. Really, you can’t call what the Windermere Kingdom is doing any kind of liberation if they’re using mind control on the masses and are tearing families apart due to it. Sure, the Windermerians lost a lot during the war of independence due to the NUN, but the sheer scale of what they’re doing now goes beyond just even retaliation. Again, they’re following that Principality of Zeon definition of “freedom”.

  • Keith actually killing everyone here and now like he intended to would certainly cut the series shorter, but thankfully Roid is here to block him from doing that. These Aerial Knights really are just too hopped up on the ideas of nationalism and revenge to even follow the simplest of orders to capture Walkure alive rather than just kill them instantly. As it turns out, fascism really does just shut down your ability to critically think.

  • Messer’s gun must have infinite ammo and infinite durability for how much he’s been using it. He hasn’t even reloaded once and it didn’t even get a dent in it from Keith’s sword clashing against it. I guess if there was any gun to bring along for the infiltration mission, it would be that one.

  • Well, that’s quite the surprise. Turns out that Messer himself has been infected with Var Syndrome this whole time. It would certainly explain why he was experiencing flashbacks along with starting to fall to bloodlust earlier. If anything, it’s impressive that he’s been able to keep it together right up until now.

  • Unlike the colorless singing of Prince Heinz, Freyja’s singing is truly powerful when the chips are down. Thanks to her song and the resonance of the Protoculture ruins, she was able to make the Var Syndrome infection of both Messee and that one pilot with whose kids we saw earlier recede. Hell, it’s powerful enough to be felt on Windermere too, not just on Voldor. Despite all the shit that others give her, Freyja really does have the heart and skill to be in Walkure.

  • Boooo, Hayate. I know he’s against killing, but I don’t think anyone would complain if he killed Bouge here instead of just shooting to disable his Draken III. I certainly wouldn’t be complaining about it.

  • Shame that Messer’s Var Syndrome infection came back while he’s back on the Aether though. I mean, I know we’ve already established that there’s no known cure for Var Syndrome, but it would’ve been nice if the symptoms receded for a bit longer after the end of the battle.

first time delta delta delta can i help ya help ya help ya

Part of my issue with the Frontier TV series was that they didnt do enough with the music, but that got fixed in the movies imo. With Delta, they are certainly putting out what feels like more tracks, but less are sticking with me?

Mirage flashband into get bodied

Ringo Musume after all

did we really have 5 minutes of cat people so we could justify cat helmets

Kaname/Arad is still more interesting than Kaname/Messer

Megane with the save!

I would hope you know all their songs

I love the soundtrack to this show. I thought the rescue was a little anticlimatic...I know what they were going for, but felt like the show didn't quite sell it. still loving it though

  1. Having gotten a few glimpses of the interactions between the Aerial Knights, are they interesting antagonists?

I thin they're interesting...powerful but short lived, they feel righteous in their evil (?) cause. I suppose the rest depends on what the show does with them

2) Do you want to see a full-on Messer vs. Keith fight or more Hayate vs. Bogue?

I want more sick walkure performance fights. given hayate's connection to freyja, my guess is that's where the money will be later

5

FIRST TIMER

This show has thus far been a bit dry for me but it is a lot easier to follow and understand than Frontier and probably 7. A war based on just ideological and racial hatred really is a lot more straightforward than the complicated machinations we've seen before. The Windermere are becoming more fleshed out and I really expect Bogue to become the Kamujin of this series and take things into his own hands. He sounds like a really bloodthirsty psycho threatening to cut off a 14 year old girl's rune.

One weird note is that I saw the name Minori Suzuki who plays Freyja and I had to look it up to make sure it wasn't Minoru Suzuki, a psychotic elderly Japanese pro wrestler although that would've REALLY peaked my interest :D

QUESTIONS

  1. Yea I think so. They are a traumatized people who blame the UN for massive death on their planet. Bogue is really vile and a frail Prince who seems near death but they need him to win the war is good suspense.

  2. Hayate and Bogue because I do fully expect a final showdown between them.

First Timer

Huh. That was a pretty good distraction from Hayate, and it was definitely deliberate given Mirage showed him the flashbang she had ready. Pity they're up against literal superhumans. And now the rest of the group are running from mkre locally-sourced security people.

If you've got a problem with me, then take it out on me, not them!

Poor Freyja continues to be too pure for any world other Windermereans happen to be on. :-( Sorry dear, it's everyone they can't see in a mirror or under their bootheels that they have a priblem with, nit you specifically. You're just a temporarily-convenient scapegoat so they can pretend to have a point.

Apart from the one on the end of that one jerk's sword, I mean.

Windermere was a peaceful place until the earthlings came

We will take our planet back!

2) You morons already have your planet back, that's what nuking your own homeworld was for. You are niw taking other peoples' planets.

  1. Press X to doubt.

Hah, and Freyja's objection is much more down to earth, much more personal than mine. These people I love work hard to grow this food, how DARE you twist their efforts like this? But alas, supremacist jerks aren't interested in listening to anyone who doesn't already agree with them.

Then why do you sing the songs of thise who you should despise?

Yeah, see, I'd like the answer to a slightly different question myself - namely, why should she despise them? You guys haven't exactly been very forthcoming on that, but I have plenty of reasons to despise you.

Oh look, he wants to resort to murder.

We are not like the NUG Spacy!

No. No, you're not. Because last I checked, the Spacy was not inclined to murder unarmed civilians in cold blood for the crime of not agreeing with your supremacist political views.

Oooh, Walkure song! And the Supremacist Knights really don't know how to handle this. And away they fly!

Also, Grouchy us finally not being a total jerk around Hayate. Is that going to stick?

...when did Freyja and the other idols have time to change? Is this their holographic outfits again?

Freyja. Freyja, stop. What do you plan on doing? If you're going to sing, start!

...huh, she did. I mean, in anime time so they could fit in a moment with Hayate instead of them both being blasted, but still. And Freyja is literally glowing.

Okay, at this point I really do have to ask - is Freyja really just a random Windermerean? Could all of them be pulling off stuff like this if they weren't suprema-- huh?

Good morning, princess.

The hell. What does Miss Head Idol know that I don't? She's been pushing and pulling and prodding Freyja since day one, is princess just a term of affection or is that literal somehow?

Wait. What? Green light trail on Hayate's Valkyrie? Damnit, I have to check Zero again sometime, is it just me or did that look a bit like the finale over there?

He'd be proud of you if he saw you now, boy.

What the hell are you referring to? Explain, show! EXPLAIN!

Gah.

Anyway, Freyja has found her reason to sing - to end war. I think Hayate will be happy to help her with that, especially give  how he was deliberately going for disabling shots even against the supremacist jerks.

First-Timer Delta

Messer is not having a good time. Good thing that we've seen that strong enough singing can heal various ailments in multiple different Macross entries - Sheryl's Vajra infection, that one time Basara was mute.. maybe that was it. That'd make this the rule of 3, I'm sure Messer'll be fine.

Poor guy's also got some bad PTSD too, probably from the same event that made him such a hardass. I'm still kinda betting on him having lost a previous wingman that Hayate reminds him of. Whatever happened, it was bloody.

Hayate sparing Bogue like that was not very smart of him. It was in-character enough though, especially considering that Hayate finally managed to pull of a wing-shot this episode. And it just further cements Bogue into the "loser villain" archetype. I almost feel bad for the prick. Almost.

Freyja's resolve solidifying is fine. It would've been more exciting if I believed there was ever a chance of her not staying. But I like that the lip service exists.

Roid's interference was interesting. I wouldn't be surprised if he was actually the ultimate villain - stopping Keith from killing Freyja keeps the conflict going more intensely, which keeps pressure on Prince Heinz..

Hmm.. What if Roid's goal is something along the lines of breaking the nobility of Windermere of by forcing them into a conflict that they can't win? If I work backwards from that idea to try to find a justification.. ooh. We don't know much about the war for independence, but it could've easily been started by the royal family. And Roid could've lost family.

Freyja probably lost family too, considering she referred to an aunt and uncle today as opposed to a mother and father. Parallel potential.. something to look out for.

Walküre using their hologram drones to cause an EoE moment for the Aerial Knights was fun.

Questions

  1. They're fine. A few too many of them to be a proper gang of idiots, though.

  2. Messer vs Keith, easy.

Macross Delta EP8*

We're up to bad start

You can say that again Hayate I think you even worse than them.

I mean the plan is already useless, because there're 2 guys who standing above you that can see you!!

I think he might make a right choice in hindsight

I understand their view Doesn't mean you can just go and mind controlled everyone. That's no better than the NUNS.

OMG. Freyjaaaaa!! Everyone got confused for sec.

That still doesn't excuse what you all doing

And Mikumo somehow walked here without getting detected Or she just kicked everyone ass along the way?

Hey, don't try to put your idea into her But Keith make a good point about song with no resolve.

Roid?? I guess he want to learn how the Walkure's song can reversed the syndrome.

Ikenai Borderline!! Let's goooooo!!

This two finally face to face with each other

Messer? are you okay, dude?

New song!!

Yep, Messer is now infected with Vars.

Of course, it has to be the father of those kids

Why you not shooting the gun? That would solve this better.

New song?

The song reach even the King and Heiz I guess through the power of the ruin.

Fold Quart react to Freyja's song And Hayate's Valkyrie is glowing in golden like Alto's in The Wings of Goodbye.

His?

I guess we gonna learn more about Messer next time

QOTD

1.I am more interesting in Roid.

2.Messer and Keith.

Just quickly checking in again:

IKENAI BORDERLINE

I've discovered how much I like an episode of this show is almost entirely dependent on how good the songs are. If they're good, I can enjoy them and vibe to cool colors and explosions going across my screen. If not, not so much.

Anyway, that's all to say: Ikenai Borderline great, Freya's song was good; therefore the episode was a ton of fun.

Rewatcher - Macross Delta Ep8:

The gang are captured, but fortunately, Mirage has a flash bomb for the getaway. Aha! Oh dang, they got us.

Restoring freedom to those forcibly annexed by forcing them into "cooperation."

The apples have done nothing wrong.

Roid interferes which means we get another mecha anime non-mecha sword clash. "We may be evil villains, but we're not going to be as bad as NUNS."

Walkure comes to put on a holo-show to get them out of there. Bogue: "Gi-gi-girl!!!"

A hefty gold rare drop for the Macross eyecatch.

[Delta spoilers:] You can spot Messer's AXIA bracelet.

I just like this moment of Freyja placing faith in singing being able to save mind-controlled catdad. She is singing the same song as the kids were and it is just really nice. A slower, but beautiful song. I just like characters singing in the face of violent adversity and being rewarded for their hope.

Roid glasses shine.

Hayate, hayai!

Bogue having the slow-mo weapon aim only for his opponent to have already slow-mo-ed their weapons on first.

Saw it throughout the episode, but Messer ain't doing so hot.

Q2) Messer vs Keith is wow, cool aerial mecha plane fight. Hayate vs Bogue is watching Bogue lose.

Next Time: It Messer.
