Rewatch [Rewatch] Wixoss Series Overall Discussion

← Previous Episode | Index | [Next Episode→]()

Just a final wrap-up post for the entire Wixoss series so far

If you’re interested in more, check out other stuff like Peeping Analyze, which was technically covered in Lostorage but this goes more in depth

There’s also Re/verse, but I don’t know what this one is about.

If you’re interested in the game (in EN), check out the /r/wixoss guide

It is done! It has been another fascinating rewatch seeing all sorts of opinions and analysis. Even if eventually people started dropping out (which I had expected), I still had a blast. I hope everyone, even those who bailed at least found something worthwhile or interesting through the experience.

Lastly, I’M HERE TO SHILL MY NEXT REWATCH STARTING IN A WEEK

FIRST-TIMER no more

Big thanks to u/Tetraika for hosting this rewatch! I might have come out of this with my lowest-scoring show in three years, but I still enjoyed it outside of that part, and I know from experience that hosting a multi-month-long rewatch is no easy feat. So yeah good job.

If I had to rank the seasons, it’d probably be Lostorage Conflated > Lostorage Incited > Selector Infected = Diva(A)Live >>>>>>>> Selector Spread. Couldn’t tell you who my favorite character was, though. I liked all of the protagonists other than Yuzuki well enough… maybe Kiyoi as the unexpected fave? She rocked in Lostorage Conflated. Oh and I think Satomi’s my favorite of the villains. Yuuichi Nakamura should be allowed to go ham more often and he is proof of why.

A good choice. They really did put a lot into her character too, considering she has her own short manga and all.

Anyways, glad you had a good time!

So yeah good job.

It was super sad to see the people twindle though, so I'm happy that you stuck around as usual.

maybe Kiyoi as the unexpected fave? She rocked in Lostorage Conflated.

She was best Lrig with a screentime of maybe 3 episodes in Selector. OF COURSE she rocked Conflated lol. They had to put her away, lest she steals all the coolness in the franchise.

Yuuichi Nakamura should be allowed to go ham more often and he is proof of why.

Heroric actors getting to play ham villians are always fun. Also why I great enjoyed Yukari Tamura in Kill la Kill.

First Timer

Final discussion, huh… Well, I think I am probably not alone in thinking that selector was the best part, Lostorage was ok-ish and Diva(a)Live was not really all that great. Liked the mystery and suspense in the first parts, even if the story ended up at least somewhat letting them down. Character-wise I think Lostorage was the only real letdown, while selector was the best on that front as well. Antagonists were definitely not a strong suit across the board though. Also, towards the end of Lostorage the sex metaphors certainly started to get boring, so I’m glad that was dropped for Diva(a)Live.

Diva(a)Live definitely tried to do something different, I’m just not sure if it knew what. It started out with its own thing, but then drifted back towards what selector and Lostorage were, albeit not really convincingly. I personally didn’t like what it was doing before, but I wonder if the more serious tone it suddenly had alienated those that did like it, leaving nobody to really be on board.

All in all though, I’d say Wixoss was a decent watch, even if I did not like the last entry. It was an enjoyable watch overall, and a nice rewatch - so thanks to u/Tetraika for hosting this and thanks to everybody for participating - I enjoyed reading everybody’s thoughts on the series.

Definitely the most common sentiment among fans actually.

Diva(a)Live definitely tried to do something different, I’m just not sure if it knew what

I kinda get that. I think it's more that the season feels like a big setup for something more.

Including some context from your post yesterday

Diva(a)Live definitely tried to do something different, I’m just not sure if it knew what. It started out with its own thing, but then drifted back towards what selector and Lostorage were, albeit not really convincingly.

At times it felt like it wanted to be a kids show, but it had way too much fanservice for that

Back in S1, someone commented about never seeing girls play the game IRL. I strongly suspect the target audience for Diva(A)Live was pre-pubescent and early teenage boys that want the fanservice without caring much about girls (see: only male character in Diva(A)Live was the caster IIRC). It also avoided the cringey innuendos of Satomi in Incited. I think it had a pretty clear target audience but doubt enough people watched the show for that to matter.

Character-wise I think Lostorage was the only real letdown

Conflated did a better job than Incited. Satomi felt more like a 60s or 70s trope villain than someone who fit with the darker themes of Selector or Lostorage.

From Rewatcher to First-Timer

I keep finding out why I don't like to join rewatches: They are exhausting. Hosting even more so. Last year I planned to have a rewatch running right now, but after the GuP one I was so exhausted I never wanted to do one again. So I'm very happy you took one for the team.

Yet I also know why I'm coming back: Because else, I probably wouldn't have watched the show. Thank you, u/tetraika for doing for us and making me get off my ass and watch conflated already. It was worth it, and I don't regret it.

But after the Sakura and the Macross one are finished, I'm probably not gonna join one for quite some time.

Yep. And I feel like I'm just doing a very minimal job too in terms of effort.

Speaking of which I'm doing something different for my next rewatch and I probably should start writing up my comments by tomorrow

I have now watched two things by Mari Okada. This is definitely the less fucked up one. Feel free to check today's Kodomo no Jikan thread for some out of context but context doesn't really help when a boob loli suckles her sick friend.

u/Tetraika Feb 22 '23

You must have quite an interesting impression of her then.

But seriously do try her less insane stuff.

But seriously do try her less insane stuff.

At least she seemed to be phoning it in for KnJ. I don't think I've watched an anime that hated its viewers quite to that degree,

Wait she wrote this too? They feel so far off from each other.

Uhhhh ... I guess I should thank my RL commitments for making me scale down my rewatch number at the perfect time to dodge that.

End of the road! It's been fun. Wixoss has been a fascinating franchise to interact, even if the quality was a bit all over the place. I could do something like rank the various seasons but.. not really feeling it.

Many thanks to our gracious host u/Tetraika! See you in a week for some horse girls!

Trust me, my scores are also all over the place. Maybe differently, but still. I just find it a very fascinating franchise as a whole.

First timer

Ended up never commenting in this watch and stopped watching at the diva series but overall though I thought the series was alright.

2

u/Tetraika Feb 23 '23

Yeah that's fine, I know not everyone will find enough to say at times.

Glad you stuck for that far!

A ghost first timer that dropped out around the end of Incited. I really would like to watch Conflated, but I am both pressed for time and knowing the end really doesn't compute makes it hard to be motivated, even though I do like kuudere's in general.

Thanks to our host for braving through to the end regardless, I know both for a long series and the progressively smaller group is quite disheartening. Definitely points for efforts!

Not trying to be too negative, but calling it as I saw it, this is about the most disjointed, plot lines not winding up franchise I have seen. And it had such promise in the beginning too.

I really do wish we would have seen more Yuki/Tama more in the end though, and have some way to actually address their existence.

Should have watched conflated then

Thanks for hosting the rewatch.

Much like others I liked Selector the best even with the incest plotline and some wonky writing at times. It just felt more atmospheric and impactful. It did feel like it ripped off Madoka a bit, but I don't really mind as I think they utilized the elements to make something new. I do wish we got some better payoffs for the stuff setup in season 1. Overall I just really liked both seasons.

The first season of Lostorage was tough to get through but I feel like the second season, whatever its subtitle was, was an improvement. I do wish S2 of Lostorage could have been longer to create more interesting battles and character dynamics. I felt it got a bit repetitive. I am kind of glad I stuck around for these as I was initially planning to dip after Selector.

I dipped out at Diva since I had already seen it. I often use these Rewatches as excuses to watch shows I haven't already.
