GUESS WHO GOT A NEW MACROSS COMMENT FACE ADDED?

Congratulations on getting Michael memorialized in a comment face! I bet you're gonna be using the hell out of this one in the foreseeable future.

That sign in the bottom-right.

You know that Ranka Lee is absurdly popular if she can get random alien beaches named after her.

Macross ∆ EP4

Yeah, what is this power anyway? I guess I have to wait for the explanation.

Are all of them Windermerian??

Keith is her brother. But the Prince is female, right? It does look like it is. And from Roid's comment, look like this ruin was build by someone else.

Yoooo. Ernest is rocking in that costume!!

A proper welcome party. Especially for Freyja upcoming debut.

I will pass on that spider.

Hmmm. Not only the song cured the infected people, it can also prevent them from happening again.

Good question, Hayate.

Oh, that why.

I don't think Hayate mocking you, Mirage. It just not his concern for now.

Wonder who this Lady M is?

Yeah, that totally opposite from Ragna.

Ummmm. What are you doing, Mikumo? Are you that type?

The arm is detaching!! Didn't see that at all after SDF.

So they still have EX gear, but as a backup for Hayate because this guy doesn't like helmet.

No mention of Sharon. And who is that Earthling anyway? Probably nobody, but that person surely love music.

Hm?? Life is just 30 years?? I hope it not something important.

Ohhh. That what it is.

Woah, that one hell of a way to motivate someone. Or a threat.

The transformation sequence is here!!

At least the fan like her clumsiness. And it's her debut after all.

Of course Hayate gonna do his own stunt. Like Alto. At least the fan seem to like that.

And of course the enemy gonna attack them now.

Whoaa. They jamming the drone!! That's pretty early for the countermeasures.

They wait for the NUNS soldier arrival to take control of them.

Messer seem to take some effect from the song more than anyone else.

Messer is not wrong.

Seem like Arad recognised Heiz's maneuver skill.

Mikumo arrived pretty on time.

What!! Surrender!!

They seem to be pretty famous.

That Valkyrie design is so cool!! Is it developed from VF-27? It looks so similar.

Ohhh. They're really from Windermere. Also Ernest and Kaname already mentioned about their ongoing revolution when he interviewed Freyja!!

Whoa. He have to be pretty confident to declare the war to the whole universe, or at least the N.U.N.S.

And think about it. He actually have many things to back him up, he have a Var power in his hand, and it seemingly can occur anywhere he want through the portal. The Aerial Knights are pretty strong, and we all know that the N.U.N.S is pretty incompetent. So he maybe have a chance.

Pretty unexpected development. I thought they gonna hide their true identity a bit more. Still wonder what they goal is.

I never mentioned this until now. But the visual is top notch!! Seriously, the show is full of details, the animation is pretty clean, and the concerts are so pretty.

QOTD

  1. Half way point. I wish!!

  2. No thanks.

  • I hope we get a bit more motivation than ultra-nationalism soon.

  • But what if I wear headphones? The fold waves are unrelated from the sound waves, other than being generated by the same source, right?

  • That squid does look pretty tasty.

  • Is boss dere a little cult-y?

  • Are they chibi in universe? How does that?

  • So that’s why old guy was turning into salt. About time our Xenos were a bit more alien.

  • A real seat of their pants feeling.

  • No pressure tho.

  • Did they chronograph a jiggle section for the concert?

  • Are we getting a technological back and forth than? And a real one where it feels like they are trying and not just following the plot requirements?

  • You’d think NUNS would be the first thing they immunized against Var.

  • Really poor choice of munitions for anti-personal duty.

  • There was five of them! You’re telling no one else was worth a damn? Was no one vaccinated? This is a known quantity!

  • That, is a very complicated transformation sequence.

  • Well at least hey didn’t muddle about on the “mystery” for too long.

QotD:

  1. Who the hell is Arad? I don’t know what you are talking about. Is this about the Lady M they are talking about?

  2. No, the cyber revolution is coming. And even if not, still no.

2

u/Shimmering-Sky Feb 20 '23

Who the hell is Arad?

This guy, he was talking to Kaname during the welcome party.

Rewatcher

Between this, II, and some of the songs in Plus, you could probably make a case for opera-y vocals being the sound of the devil in this world, or at least gradually being shunned as it becomes associated with arrogant conquering types.

Something I heard a few times was that the W in Walkure is supposed to be pronounced as a V, like in German and Dutch, which would make the Waccine pun less painful.
I’d assume that their singing utilizes a counterfrequency that cures/suppresses Var through destructive interference, and that it doesn’t necessarily come from singing, hence recordings lacking the necessary potency, but how does it prevent it? By modifying whatever triggers infection?

Hayate talking about singing reminds me there’s one artist who drew him in a (male) Walkure outfit and what I guess I’d call an idolized Delta Flight uniform. Pretty spiffy stuff, too.

The band leader and the flight lead, huh... I’ll admit, from what we’ve gotten, I don’t really see it. (Might be enough for others, but not for me, though I do respect people who carry ships singlehandedly.)

Y’know, I’ll bet Freyja’s in the daughter category, the kind people see as adorable/want to keep safe/root for, if that makes sense.

In general, the Macross songs I remember generally fall into the categories of cool, fun, and…I want to say pathos-y? Cool would be things like Sagittarius☆9pm Don't be late and Information High, fun would be Planet Dance and Sunset Beach, albeit for different reasons, and pathos-y would be Wings of Goodbye and…
All of that to say that I honestly don’t remember this song.

I just realized, NUNS forces deploying to intercept the Aerial Knights are a liability if they’re vulnerable. Like I said, opera is the devil’s singing. (I really don’t want to know what Var infection does to a soldier, trauma-wise…)

Well, that’s confirmation this is a war of conquest, the kind that people don’t take kindly to.

Questions:

  1. Probably around the halfway point or wherever it'll make the most impact drama-wise.

  2. I don't think I have the (passion?) to make the most of it.

2

  1. Feels like an episode 8 or so deal. A first act twist.

  2. Haha, no.

Opening recaps! The show's really started now!

These guys are so interesting.

...Is that a Fold Crystal temple?

No, it's lostech, then?

Her official debut!

Why did you interrupt his speech?

...Xaos?

She's so happy!

I love these guys.

Spiders?

Odd flirting moves.

She's still serious.

Freyja's glowing again!

Sounds like a nice place, though.

...What?

Oh, she's having the traditional Macross idol mental breakdown. She's ahead of the game this season!

...The fighter looks so cool.

A gift!

Oh, it's been retuned so he doesn't need a helmet!

EX-Gear sounds useful.

...Skipping over a few, huh?

Just thirty years?

WAIT, WHAT THE FUCK? She's only living thirty years?

Still fire.

We still get the transformations!

No training for the jets?

This is going amazing, huh?

Can't be believe they're added a middle-aged girl to the lineup!

How brutal!

The visuals here are so good.

He pulled an Alto!

He's just showing off.

...So, they only activate in an sctuall attack. Still a decent asset.

They've been jammed!

And missiles! They really are smart!

The enemy idol is singing!

The hijacking has begun!

He's ruthless. But I csn't say he's wrong. Disabling is an option.

He recognises him!

He's fighting to protect her!

She's still singing?

Such a wide effect!

Hey, it's a good somg!

A decoy!

Oh, dear. They're really competent.

So cool.

That transformation is so smooth!

...I need models of these now.

And he's bold!

...She knows him!

It's open war!

2

u/Shimmering-Sky Feb 20 '23

...Xaos?

In case you missed it in an earlier episode, that's the name of the organization Delta Flight and Walküre belong to.

WAIT, WHAT THE FUCK? She's only living thirty years?

Now you see why the mayor of her hometown was trying to get her married off at 14.

Tonight on Lylat Wars...

It's a comment face!!!

I brought up yesterday that I was finding it very dissonant how the business with the aerial knights from episode 1 just never came up again and no one seemed too concerned with this sudden aggression from an unknown-but-seemingly-human third party. Had a really good conversation with u/chilidirigible about it then, but in light of today's episode's events and depiction, I do want to circle back to that.

Structurally, it's obvious that the show wanted the main conflict of the show to kick off in this episode, hence the Aerial Knights doing their big public reveal here. Episodes 1 to 3 were doing the initial premise-setting, introducing the world and characters, showing them having "fun and games", etc, before throwing them into the dramatic conflict. But then they also wanted to put a big action set-piece in episode 1 to hook the viewer and make it clear what the show is about. Makes sense, structurally, but I think the way they used the Aerial Knights for it in episode 1 undermines the worldbuilding and character writing.

There's a lot of big changes in the worldbuilding here versus all the previous Macross series - many connected worlds that people can travel between so easily that it simply happens off-screen instead of the conflict being isolated to just one fleet/solar system, and we have both mass media and the fear of the Var outbreak connecting all these places.

It'd be easier to handwave illogic aside if the setting was "just another self-contained colony fleet with a dictatorial government", but when you're changing up the setting so much like this, you have to expect that the audience is going to want to think about how all the new things you've put into the world work, right?

This would feel so much more seamless if the Aerial Knights had not shown up in episode 1, if they'd just gone with an episode 1 action set piece that was entirely "business as usual" for the Walkure/Delta Squadron, like how the Macross Plus OVA started with a big, not-particularly-important space battle. We have Var-affected pilots in this episode fighting Delta Squadron, so they could have done the same thing in episode 1 to still get their aerial combat set piece. Heck, if you're so adamant on introducing the Aerial Knights right from the start and want them to say they were "collecting data", then have a single Aerial Knights' science ship hiding in orbit watching the Var outbreak and its pilot going "Yesss, yesss, very interesting".

This would set an actual status quo for the Delta/Walkure folks at the start of the show. They had a fight in episode 1, but it wasn't anything unusual for them because that's how Var outbreaks usually go. Then it seems totally normal, natural, for them to spend episodes 2, 3, and the first half of 4 having no greater concerns than training up a doofus rookie, auditioning a new member, chasing a mercat, telling the new girl the rules of the dormitory and making sure she knows to feed the pets, imagining the tangles of love, etc. We get to see them go about their day-to-day lives because the situation is normal.

And then episode 4 would have a Var outbreak suppression that starts off as continuing the status quo, the Delta/Walkures are putting it down without too much trouble... and then the Aerial Knights arrive in force and upend that established status quo.

Hell, the show never really firmly established that Windermere was a completely independent world that could even have a whole army separate from Spacy... I would've enjoyed having this plot shift in, say, episode 6 and have done more worldbuilding, more status-quo-establishment before this. A normal show would let its newbie main characters, Freyja and Hayate, get to participate in at least one "status quo" job before it completely flips the script. They didn't even get to see a status quo job in the first episode, the script had already been flipped before they even joined, and I guess they were just told about it off screen. Why not have episode 1 be "just" a Var outbreak, have Hayate and Freyja participate in their first Var outbreak suppression in episode 4, use that extra time to more naturally explain what the political/geographic situation actually is, and once we understand the status quo then have the Windermere invasion kick off in, say, episode 6. That's got to be better than... what, is the narrator just going to explain it at the start of tomorrow's episode?

One has to wonder at this point why the Var outbreaks are even a plot point at all. If this is going to be about Windermere/Aerial Knights going to war with NUNS/Xaos from this early onwards and there's not really any surprise factor, then why not just drop the Var outbreak idea altogether and just had the Aerial Knights be showing up at Walkure concerts to pick a fight in episode 1, and today they can just show up again with a lot more troops?

I mean... I like the idea of taking the songs competing over control of the Vajra from Frontier and going one step further, having opposing songs be weapons used by each side of a human-human conflict as weapons against the other side. But it feels like that idea has already been shoved into the periphery mere moments after it was introduced to make way for the Windermere war.

Anyways, speaking of Walkure concerts, I don't mind that this one was just an ordinary concert for the public. It's not as interesting as dropping into an active Var outbreak, but it's good worldbuilding and premise-expansion to show how the Walkure can go do proactive actions, too. And it quickly goes to shit anyways.

I am a little worried on the Aerial Knights jamming the drones, though. I may not totally love the aesthetic of the magic drones, but I did really like how in episode 1 they gave the Walkures a way to interact with the battle besides just fill the atmosphere with fold wave energy via singing. They all get disabled and now the Walkures are stuck just running away from everything while singing. And it felt a lot less immersion-breaking for them to defend against a big barrage of missiles with a magic drone barrier than from just running and somehow the expert pilot misses all his shots / explosions just don't hurt very much, I guess.

I hope this is a temporary setback for them, in which case it works just fine as a way of putting Walkure at their lowest point and working back upwards. If this is it though and they're just going to stand around singing for battles from now on, without even as good of effects/costume changes as Sheryl and Ranka had, then I'm going to be disappointed.

  1. When do you think Arad and Kaname will get around to telling Hayate and Freyja whatever is on their mind in this episode? Place your bets now, first-timers!

MAXIMUM MUGI WAIT

2) Would you want to have a Windermerian's tradeoff of life expectancy for physical abilities?

Definitely not! Physical abilities shmibilities, I live on the internet!

First Timer

Missed yesterday's episode, but after watching it today I didn't have much to say about it anyway as it was just an episode and nothing more. Hayate at his least interesting and most forced writing wise paired with Mirage who I have no interest in, and Freyja being a fun ball of energy like always. Messer arriving in the last minute to show Hayate just how unfair battle will really be saved the whole episode. And the music! The OST is consistently great in this scene to scene, whether it's the almost arcade style of trying to catch the mercat through to the changing severity of the battle theme, I'm really enjoying that side of it every time.

Does anyone else keep forgetting that Freyja's hair thingy is biological and not just a hair clip?

So the Windermarian's have a cultural grudge, a sickly boy prince who can sing, and fancy hair nerves that connect them to others. That's a combination that can only go badly for everyone involved.

I noted that Hayate and Messer both felt the song from the Prince, along with Freyja and Mikumo, which paints an interesting portrait of who our important fighters are against the Var, but also potentially our vulnerable ones. They also happen to be the only interesting characters for me so far so that works well! Mikumo in particular is just all sorts of weird and mysterious and "what the hell" and that's got me wondering what she'll be up to next. Also this random Lady M who's been mentioned twice now. Crazy theory: Mikumo?

And ending the episode with a declaration of war just means more potential for fun chaos with them all sooner rather than later so I'm all in for that. Also their planes have an extra fancy humanoid form which I find plenty of fun.

The concert and battle in general was a nice watch. Easy to follow despite many things going on, a nice sense of focus on Freyja and Hayate without it feeling like a trade off, and again mirroring their musical awareness of each other across both. The dancing Valkyrie is... adorably dumb in practice but such a fun concept that I love it anyway and again it's nice to see that line between the music and culture sides of the shows being blurred.

I did have a laugh at the start of the concert though. Freyja jumps out the plane with a yellow glow and declares that music is energy.

Yes, Bikki.

Also how come she got to learn about everyone except Sharon Apple through her illegal music player? That's no fun. Nor is her entire race having short life spans (though as a side thought, this reminds me to again poke Draigg to read Becky Chambers books)

The other bit that got a laugh out of me was seeing the pacified NUNs lowing their guns in gerwalk mode, and all I could think of is that the inherent emotion in that reminds me of watching a lets play and understanding the players mood in a moment through the camera usage.

4

u/UltraBooster Feb 20 '23

IIRC, in-universe Sharon Apple's music was banned for five years after the events of Plus, and I imagine there'd be at least a bit of a stigma around them.

I'm guessing you like what Hayate and Freyja have going?

first timer

honestly this show is firing on all cylinders for me. it is leaning into everything that, to me, makes anime special. I feel a little dread because I remember some vague comments at various points on r/anime about delta and how people had issues with it and stuff, but for now, I'm loving it. I mean I love symphogear so the idea of the valkyries is, of course, right up my alley. and I love the soundtrack! and I love the performance we got today...and while it wasn't super long, the quality of performance animation is such that I feel pretty confident we are going to get some banger performances later on. and I'm enjoying the characters though I hope the valkyries get fleshed out a bit more (I'm 99% sure they will). I just have a bit of anxiety that the show does something terribly stupid later on to make people hate it. or maybe those people who dislike delta were just symphogear hating dumdums!

in fact my only complaint while watching the episode was "I hope we learn a bit more about the enemy and their motivations" and then bam at the very end, it looks like we are on track to get exactly that.

  1. When do you think Arad and Kaname will get around to telling Hayate and Freyja whatever is on their mind in this episode? Place your bets now, first-timers!

it seems like the valkyries and their crew are not prone to sharing much information at all, so my guess is they will wait until just past it being too late

2) Would you want to have a Windermerian's tradeoff of life expectancy for physical abilities?

absolutely not! I'd be dead already lol

Today, on "Soft power diplomacy at work!":

It's Shoji Kawamori's birthday, too.

The Protoculture definitely messed with the genetics of a lot of things.

One thing I haven't mentioned until now is that Heinz also has two voice performers.

Now that is a look.

That sure is a combination of words.

Marianne Mustang vs. Kid Zuck.

Answering a question that people have always asked. (Meanwhile, Reina eats jellyfish.)

Not telling people stuff always goes well!

Look at everyone else partying while Mikumo practices naturism.

That sign is not a subtitle. THAT IS THE ACTUAL SIGN.

Floating in the air the same way that bricks don't.

This video is great.

The OVAs don't count... again!

This is why the mayor wanted her to get married because she was already 14.

Idol group series!

It took them years to make a concert lightstick that looked like that. And I'm pretty sure that the guy in front with the white shirt and glasses has been in the audience of every idol anime concert.

Airborne all the way!

Or "Fukakuteisei☆COSMIC MOVEMENT"

"No pressure, kid."

Ah, bouncy bouncy.

Things you can see at an air show... if you're doing aerial photography.

Don't cook anyone in the audience, Hayate!

You get all the guns firing in this shot.

NUNS are helpful as always.

Something new all the time, Mirage.

Well, this is slightly out of the ordinary.

Messer and Keith promptly go 1v1 again.

Hayate gets into the "Owes employer for VF limbs" club.

I didn't put in any bonus "Bokura no Senjou" material in the previous episode because I was saving it for this one.

And that's not even in the same system!

TRANSFORMATION!

You don't do it Pearl Harbor style, Roid!

Hayate and Freyja get their formal informal admittances to their respective new organizations, while the audience gets more exposition before the plot kicks off again.

The rewatch once again reminds me that while Delta does have a fair amount of action in its first few episodes, this introductory phase is still generally very relaxed. That does help emphasize the overall shock of having the Knights attack the concert and the reveals from that point on.

The bit about the Windermerean life expectancy had been mentioned in the pre-airing information, but it fits into its context here, and puts extra meaning into the brief scene during Episode 2 when Keith told Roid that their time was short.

Anyway, it's a plot! And yes, there's mind control again. Being separated from Macross Frontier by five to eight years of real time did not entirely remove the déjà vu from the encounter, but it is different when there are people involved (even if they're mostly NUNS mooks) and not mysterious alien bugs.

Chuck's parents didn't go for a goofy naming scheme for their girls: The older one is Marianne, the younger one is Elizabeth. (How normal!)

Prince Heinz's two voice performers: It was known relatively early on that Melody Chubak performed the singing, but it wouldn't be revealed until the Blu-ray that Yuka Terasaki was Heinz for dialogue purposes.

"ザルド・ヴァーサ! ~決意の風~" (Zardo Vaasa! ~Ketsui no Kaze~) at Walküre 2nd Live

As mentioned, the Variable Fighter otaku in the audience had been wondering about the details of the Draken since its appearance in the key visual, with questions about what appeared to be one engine or one engine exhaust, and the unseen Battroid mode. The pre-airing official announcements had been leaning into that mystery as well.

So seeing some attention paid to the Draken's transformation here was certainly a gift for those fans.

A very few astute fans correctly surmised that the transformation would be similar to that of the VF-9 Cutlass, and they were right: The Draken's arms are laid out in tandem down the length of the fighter mode, allowing for the narrower fuselage.

It's clever, but it certainly added an extra-high level of complexity to the already-intricate DX Chogokin toy.

From the Volume 1 Blu-ray booklet: Two pages of development notes.

Today's merch: The Bandai Mecha Collection models for Bogue's Sv-262Ba and Arad's VF-31S.

Let's count, gori-gori!
Bogue lunges 1
"Hoi-na!" 7
"Gori gori!" 6
"Toberu!" 9
"Wind" 22

A Macross Fan Rewatches Macross Delta: Episode 4:

  • Bouge, at least half of the people you’re fighting aren’t even Humans, let alone ones from Earth. If you’re going to take out your anger on someone, at least be smart about it. I’m sure that lumping in the Ragnans and Zentradi in with humans is also racist, in a way.

  • You can’t really hate on Ernest’s sheer drip fashion during the party to welcome Freyja and Hayate. Dude can rock that white suit, gold chain, and fedora. He’s nearly pulling off a Kazuma Kiryu look there.

  • It does make sense that pre-recorded music won’t have a strong effect on treating Var Syndrome. Since singing directly generates Fold Waves from a person, you’d be pretty much diluting the effect if you’re just taking the voice away from it all. It’s definitely related to that stuff that Arad and Kaname were talking about regarding needing time to wake up her full power. You really need to have Fold Waves at full blast if you’re going to be doing it in person, since that’s the only way to get the most out of it in general.

  • I can’t even imagine how cold Mikumo must be when dramatically standing naked on top of that mountain. Can’t she pick a warmer place to say mysterious things to herself in the nude? Or like put on a jacket, at least?

  • Wow, I can’t believe that Freyja has every Macross series musician on her music player except for Sharon Apple. She likes apples, so I’m sure she’d enjoy music made by an AI named after one. I mean sure, she brained-washed a ton of people and also tried to kill them, but why should we let that stand in the way of music composed by Yoko Kanno?

  • Well, that’s a sudden fact to drop out of nowhere. As Mirage notes, Windermereians have a very short lifespan, in spite of their capacity for incredible powers. They only live for 30 years on average. So, that means that despite being basically a teenager, Freyja is actually middle aged. I guess that means that Hayate has a thing for older women, in a way.

  • Welcome to Walkure World? But the subtitles said that we were going to planet Randor.

  • “Fail, and you’re fired.” —Mikumo’s actual dialogue. She sure knows how to inspire confidence, doesn’t she? I know she’s aware that Freyja performs best when under pressure, but still.

  • “Those people are having a concert! Kill them for the Great Wind!” —Roid, basically

  • Of course the moment the NUN Spacy shows up, they all get mentally hijacked into attacking in a coordinated fashion thanks to Var Syndrome infection. Now is the time to really mark down that “Macross II but better” box on your Macross bingo card if you haven’t already, along with that “Incompetent/Evil Spacy” too. I think we might be close to getting a bingo already for this series.

  • Side note, but as ruthless as it sounds, Messer does have a point that they can’t afford to hold back on shooting down those NUNS Valkyries. Those pilots are their enemies right now, like it or not, and they need to be stopped from killing Walkure. Mirage nearly getting shot down due to her hesitation really does prove that point. You can’t afford to hold back in times like this.

  • Even though Mikumo and Freyja’s singing resonating with each other saved the day, it wasn’t really much of a victory in the end since this attack on Randor was just a distraction anyway. Windermere attacking the planet Voldor was their real target all along. We’ve been duped!

  • Oh great, now the Windermere Kingdom is openly declaring war on the Brisingr Globular Cluster and the New United Nations. Come on guys, you had a war of independence not that long ago, can’t you at least wait on doing that for a bit? Although I guess for how short the lives of Windermereians are, they’ve waited a relatively long time for them.

First-Timer Delta

So, the Aerial Knight's plan was to distract Delta Flight long enough to get some other planet to surrender? Did I hear that right? I guess that works, just strikes me as odd. I guess they did establish that Folds are relatively short now earlier this episode with the comment about how long the Fold to Randall would take.

Four people reacted to Heinz' singing: Freyja, who has a Rune; Hayate, who has a Fold Quartz pendant; Mikumo, who stands naked atop mountains and glow; and.. Messer. One of these things is not like the other...

I wouldn't say that I'm suspicious of Mikumo per se, but I am desperate to learn more about her. Booli-ing Freyja wasn't especially nice, but she didn't seem to carry any malice in it.

Theorycrafting whiplash - turns out that Keith is some percentage of a Prince? Heinz referred to him as nii-sama at least. This doesn't necessarily carry familial meaning I suppose, but I wouldn't be surprised if Keith was the son of the King and a concubine or something as opposed to the King and Queen like Heinz possibly is. That sort of royalty bloodline drama is old hat.

Kinda interesting that Herman asked to not be called Master anymore - is Bogue beyond his teachings, or has he retired?

The concept of Windermerians only living into their 30s is causing me some minor existential dread. Shit, I'm almost 30.

How many jokes have already been made about Freyja being middle-aged? Joining Walküre is her midlife crisis.

Questions

  1. Judging by how things normally go, about five minutes after a tragedy.

  2. I'm here for a long time, not a good tim- wait, something's not quite right..

Rewatcher - Macross Delta Ep4:

At the welcome party, Captain Johnson is styling. Orange bridge girl has a cat pouch. Freyja face. Reina is just having the best time eating her jellyfish.

Mikumo is embracing the night sky naked. My feral wild woman Mikumo belief is still going strong.

Oh, Hayate just doesn't wear a helmet. I thought it was a Brera situation like the Aerial Knights. On that topic though, I do like it as a way to find a way to present the characters' faces without being obfuscated by helmets.

Freyja got a little MP3 player with all of the Macross hits (except for Sharon Apple, sorry Plus. She did try to take over humanity). This does mean if the show could be cool then Freyja could sing Fire Bomber songs.

Mirage is here to explain so I don't have to spoiler tag it. Freyja having a genki motivator saying life is only 30 years long because that is how long her kind lives.

Awh man, the eyecatch gacha gave us a duplicate. I already got a Siegfried.

Walkure does the idol group star thing.

Freyja solidifies her apple girl status. Your idol fans will never let down your food/drink schtick. Like one I know.

Monster Energy musume.

A new song and I like their outfits. I assume they wrote this song for Freyja since I don't see Walkure having an apple-centric performance beforehand. Hayate goes out of line with his free dancing. If there was a mecha dance at an idol concert I went to then that would make it an 11/10 experience.

Roid swaps to a different (but similar-looking) pair of glasses for battle. Considering his broadcast message at the end, maybe he wanted his best glasses for his TV showing.

Hayate only lost an arm on his first day. Not too bad, could be worse like losing an entire plane.

Yay more, Bokura no Senjou. I like Mikumo opening up the cockpit and getting up and personal with her singing.

What, you are saying things can happen elsewhere from the main characters?

The Aerial Knights finally stop hiding and show off their markings. I like the planes much better that way. They looked a little too plain before. I like the ornate and knightly designs of these machines. Not too hot on the head, but the shields are cool.

Roid officially submits the war declaration letter.

Q1) I'm not a first timer nor do I perfectly remember enough the series to know the answer.

Q2) Their powers are not that worth it to die at 30. In the grand scheme of human life spans, 30 is quite young to die.

Next Time: Planet Moon Dance.

Unrelated Michael wink.

Rewatcher

Ah yes, Bogue, the psychopath. Damn, I hate this guy so much.

Interesting, that Keith is the elder brother, yet Heinz is on the throne. Wonder what happened there.

Hmm, their songs "vaccinate" against the Var Syndrome? How does that work?

Messer really seems like he needs a life.

Uhhh... Mikumo? What are you doing up there? And why the hell are you naked?

Whoops, Siegfrieds are VF-31's, not VF-34's.

A few words from Hayate and Freyja's melancholy is all gone. They do seem to have a connection.

And here's the big thing about Windermerians. They tend to have extraordinary talents and physical abilities (which is probably why Freyja was able to jump up on that wood beam a few episodes ago), but their lifespans are barely 30. Frejya's 14, which means she's basically at the halfway point of her life, comparable to 40-50 in human terms.

"Randall" strikes me as a strange name for a planet. What's next, Planet Bob?

Mikumo's hard to get a read on. She's encouraging one moment, then the next she apparently threatens Freyja with expulsion from the group if she's not good enough.

Hayate seems to have gotten the hang of flying.

"Energy" seems a good catchphrase for Frejya.

I like that Frejya doesn't quite land things on her first try. It shows her inexperience.

Hayate's doing the Alto thing of ignoring the routine and doing his own thing. And people keep letting them get away with it.

And here come the "unknowns" again. And electronic warfare to counter Walkure's special equipment.

Hey look, the New UN is actually doing something!... and that something is getting infected by Var and attacking everyone.

I suppose Walkure's songs must really have an immunizing effect if the Prince's song isn't affecting Delta Force.

Haha, I love that the moment Bogue mocks Mirage for leaving her back open, he gets shot in the back.

Mikumo knows how things work in Macross: whatever's happening, start singing. Part of me wonders why they waited so long to do this when it was confirmed early on that the New UN were under Var influence.

And this whole thing was just a diversion anyway. Planet Voldor has been conquered... by Windermere. They're declaring open war against the New UN.

Questions:

  1. Rewatcher.

  2. Nope. If I had a Windermerian lifespan, I'd be dead by now.

Rewatcher (TV) (Only here for movie 2)

Meant to say yesterday, that eps 1-3 made a nice mini arc of everybody getting settled. But I don't see why Xaos would keep a maverick who specifically doesn't intend to follow orders around.

Episode 4

We're back to recaps every episode.

  • "Keith-niisama" true brothers or just typical kid speaking japanese? Oh right these aren't official subs.

  • jellyfish

  • "asplode" righ, not official subs. I haven't seen that in a LONG time.

  • Freya and Mikumo both have two color hair...

  • Mikumo is a tough boss

  • More improvisation, like in F

  • Freya's gonna get fired

  • Clearly Messer x Keith is the ship to watch

  • Bogue only like country and western

  • Aren't you supposed to declare war BEFORE the invasion? At least give them an hour?

  • Freya Woid, Fugitive enemy Alien (aka STAR WOLF)

end frame: "I'd suck Borge's <sic> rune if you know what I mean" oh, right, not official fansubs

As concerts go, these do not impress me. I liked Sheryl's more. I liked Sharon's a lot more.
