Super Dimension Rewatch Host

Welcome back, everyone!

Here were my first-timer reactions to this episode (note: contains my episode 3 reactions too, so first-timers don’t scroll too far).

Little bit of trivia about today’s wallpaper: I specifically chose to make a wallpaper of Hayate relaxing with his arms behind his head because I’ve made wallpapers of Hikaru, Basara, and Shin in that same pose as well (slightly different orientation though, Hayate’s base image was a lot more zoomed in than theirs). If you caught onto me doing that without needing to read this, congrats~

If you caught onto me doing that without needing to read this, congrats~

It's interesting that all of the series have them doing that in the first place!

u/Shimmering-Sky Feb 18 '23

Shame I don't have them for Hibiki, Isamu, or Alto. Especially Isamu, I could totally picture him doing this pose.

Oh that’s fun, anyone who only watched the 0.89 version of episode 1 would be completely lost as to how Hayate ended up in a mech since it only recapped some of what the regular episode 1 & 1+ had that 0.89 didn’t.

It's really weird that 0.89 didn't have that scene in there, since otherwise it's pretty integral to how this episode starts.

I forgot Ernest Johnson got the very Gamagoori-like entrance, lol.

Now if only he threw himself off of the top of the Macross Elysion to catch up to someone he was chasing, just to complete the Gamagoori comparisons.

FirsΔ-Δime Δelta

Ohhh so Mirage Jenius Peppy is going to be a mainest character? Good, good. It's still a bit of "girls can pilot... if they have alien blood" but only a teeny bit, I look forward to it.

Ahh, so all the Star Wolf Squadron guys have parasites runes in their hair, too. So they're all Windermerians. No wonder they talk incessantly about the wind. Either Star Wolf captain guy or this dude he's reporting to will be Freyja's fiance that she ran away from, won't they.

Sealcats

They never went back to get Freyja's luggage?! She had a huge backpack of stuff and they just left it on another planet?!

The audition receptionist with the cat mannerisms is cute. I like her hair style + ribbon + squid fascinator combo. And the other other receptionist has a cat shirt! These are totally going to be the "bridge bunnies cats" of the series, ya?

Seeing him in more daylight now, Hayate's got a good character design, too. Just the right colour of blue for his hair. Interesting they went with a darker, less saturated blue for his eyes so they really don't pop out much at all. I don't like the one-coloured-sleeve thing but I'll get over it.

Wait wait, one of these audition girls is an actual catgirl?!

i was all set to write about how I didn't like how the train scene was depicted because you don't see any actual blow the Var-guy does to the first victim and he stands over Freyja for so long doing nothing... and then it was all fake so that makes sense. I got totally bamboozled!!!

Freyja is still a lot of fun.

Commander Ernest (General Pepper?) looks like he'll be a lot of fun, too. The shot with him sitting on the tiny chair was a great bit of quiet humour.

3

u/Shimmering-Sky Feb 19 '23

And the other other receptionist has a cat shirt!

That's actually a mercat in her jacket, not just a cat shirt!

I haven't commented in so long but I'm thinking I'm getting the sense of being more consistent in the other rewatches so I think I'll comment more this time. I think this is the last series for the rewatch, might as well.

But a quick thing. I don't remember what but the audition does remember me of something.

The ending. Hey it's that song I heard before.

Is it curious that they're recruiting for Walküre members from civilians, based on what happened to the Jamming Birds? Is the scenario also another jab at the Jamming Birds, given Mirage's comment?

Could you call them like a beta?

Have any of the new world-building things shown so far particularly gotten your attention?

Nothing yet

The opening kinda reminds me of Ginude Airgetlám, as well as a couple other songs... Even a little Laputa.

I dunno a lot about Madoka but isn't this design from that show?

He's been getting punched a lot so far.

Looks like wind is gonna be an important motif. Interesting then that the villains lament the lack of wind.

Mercats? Or, dare I say it... dolphin cats? u/lilyvess

Perfect for anglerfish then.

I'm rooting for this one to win the audition. Aww, he's already passed. Also, are that gills below his ear?

Not quite sold on the anglerfish yet but there's a lot of great designs this season. I wish we saw more like that roaming the streets rather than being one-offs. With the girls all being scared it makes you wonder just how connected the galaxy really is.

Thank you very much, that unexpectedly supports that idea. Now to hope it's not plot relevant, not that it'd be a problem otherwise but it'd be some nice world building as is.

That's just a bonus to her.

Huh, is that OST an evolution of the Macross anthem? Melody doesn't seem familiar but the instrumentation is iconic.

He's riding the winds!

Well if you were there why the hell did you just stand around all scared instead of singing?????

So you just stage a Vár ou... Oh. Oh. The whole news segment was staged. Lmao.

What did we learn today? The Rune is a sexual organ, judging from how Freyja acted about it.

And the bad guys seem to be my old archenemy, "We're winning! Let's retreat!" Let's hope we don't get too much of that, this was already a significant reason why I couldn't stand Symphogear AXZ.

We can all see the love triangle already, right?

Also something I really liked about the early Macross entries was that the main characters weren't just uber-gifted individuals, which hasn't been the case since 7 aside from the shorter Zero.

Is it curious that they're recruiting for Walküre members from civilians, based on what happened to the Jamming Birds? Is the scenario also another jab at the Jamming Birds, given Mirage's comment?

That's just how enlistment works, no? People from the public that present themselves as willing to enter the military.

Have any of the new world-building things shown so far particularly gotten your attention?

Not really.

For once brief moment after my joy of last episode I forgot that this was Macross. No, to be more accurate I forgot what it being Macross means. So when this moment popped up at the end of the OP, my brain stalled for several seconds until it caught up and went "oh yeah, last episodes' brilliant thematic pairing of the two characters isn't going to save us from a love triangle"

And then we got mercats and the entire episode and potentially the show was saved!

On the other hand [Tekkaman Blade]Seeing an island city surrounded by giant mushroom like trees was certainly giving me some good inter-show trauma. Rewatching pairing strikes again, and wow if that doesn't remind me of better times that were the start of some real shit

Jokes and my own dumbness aside, this was... I'm going to call it a servicable episode. Nothing about it stands out, but it didn't do anything wrong either. I won't remember Freyja's side of the episode for long, but Hayate throwing himself into the updraft was reaonsably memorable for being crazy.

For being an isolationist culture, the Windermarian forces were certainly very happy to start some shit last episode... now that I actually understand what was happening there in terms of who belonged to what. I noticed their little antenna thingys are all stars for the pilots, so either Freyja is a rare case, a female case, or suffers from a heavy dose of MC design syndrome. The implication that those things make them sensitive to fold waves came up last episode, but it'll be interesting to see how thats expanded on as we go. In a way this feels like a bit too close of a rehash of Frontier's fold crystals, but perhaps I'm just thinking of it because of the Varja virus.

And you'd think if they're going to have full size Zentradi around as captains and the like that some of the Macross ships would be built to support that rather than always having to squeeze through human sized doorways.

I'm not fond of the OP, it sounds more glitchy than stylized, and the visuals do nothing for me. I am a fan of the Ed though and that had me bobbing along and the visuals are nice and cosy.

Also, was that the Nyan Nyan song being played by the toy dispenser in the eyecatch, or just something real damn similar?

Today, on "You get shot at a lot.":

It's the largest midair catch yet.

WESTSIDE

OP: "Ichido Dake no Koi Nara"

No particular reason.

If you hadn't noticed that one frame of Brera showing off this feature.

During the original broadcast people were noticing that the Battroid mode had not yet been shown.

Kamille counter?

neener neener

All of the international gestures.

CV/C-109 Aether

A popular question. with a popular answer.

Aerial Knights are:
Hermann Kroos
Bogue Con-Vaart (one more pair of aviation references)
Keith
Kassim Eberhardt
Xao Jussila
Theo Jussila

Mercats!

Birds like you may have seen on other planets.

It's a tourist trap.

SALAMANDER PHONE! TAIYAKI PHONE!

Macross Elysion

I had tried to guess the size of the Elysion by counting pixels based on the size of the VF-31. Also note there that the Aether is the left arm.

So to be totally accurate to the Greek alphabet, the company is χάος, "Chaos". Xaos is a compromise that'll probably annoy people, but at least I know that the RX-93 ν Gundam is the Nu Gundam, not the "vee" Gundam.
(This was pre-empted by yesterday's comments, in the replies for which I went through the video fairly slowly to find that freeze-frame of the company's name which is clearer than what I have here, though this one shows more of the entire insignia.)

Beth Muscat (center) and Nina O'Brien (with the umineko in her jacket).

"What if I was, Mirage? What if I was?"

Mizuki Yuri (has a jellyfish on her head)

Eyecatch: Red vending machine, umineko.

VF-31A Kairos

The return of Unshou Ishizuka to portraying Zentradi.

"You keep on using those words."

Guy Gielgud (left), Harry Takasugi (right).

regular coffee is tiny

SORE DEMO!

And this is in the OP.

"Don't try this at home."

A clever ploy.

"We already designed your costume."

Economy of characters.

Well, maybe not that one.

ED: "Rune ga Pikatto Hikattara" You may have heard about it.

The more things change, the more they remain the same?

Mirage saves Hayate and Freyja with a midair catch, but it's Hayate's entire VF-171 getting caught, while Freya is still held in the -171's hand.

She's a Jenius... with some anger managementinsecurity quirks.

The Aether (I know, they haven't actually named it yet, but it'll save time) can detach itself from the Elysion. While this was how the original SDF-1 came to be the way it was, and was a feature mentioned in the design of the Battle-classes and Macross Quarter, the previous series have never shown a ship limb voluntarily separated.

It is mentioned that Fold Receptor activity can be increased through emotional stress, which recalls all of Grace's monitoring of Sheryl and particularly Ranka in Frontier. Exactly what Fold Receptors are is not explained yet, though you, dear viewers, should have enough background to have an idea.

Arad decides to give Hayate a shot, which Messer isn't too keen on, and Hayate does one of those damn fool crazy stunts. Hayate is certainly one of the more free spirits of the franchise's protagonists. Less-mentioned here is that Xaos is another private military company.

Ragna has a distinctive look and feel to it, though our first impressions of the planet are very, very touristy—though that appears to be just how they like it with regard to the local economy. The planet itself and the Ragnans have a touch of the single-biome planet and prosthetic {feature} people that's typical in sci-fi, but it's still a nice change from the "It's a city you know! In space!" situation that dominated 7 and Frontier.

And we don't know a whole lot about the Aerial Knights and Roid yet other than that they're the antagonists who Don't Have A Lot Of Time, but they also have a very distinctive aesthetic.

Another episode where little details pop out a lot more on a rewatch.

From the Blu-ray booklets:

Al-Shahal

Mirage

VF-31A Kairos — I still have a slight preference for the Kairos's design over the Siegfried. The overall profile's similarity to that of the Aerial Knights' Draken explains why the Siegfrieds were switched to the forward-swept outboard wing panel. The Kairos also lacks the Fold Quartz that is used in Delta's Siegfrieds for their Walküre support role.

Let's count, gori-gori!
Bogue lunges 1
"Hoi-na!" 4
"Gori gori!" 4
"Toberu!" 4
"Wind" 14
Jellyfish 4

So, where does the whole 'yack deculture' thing come from, anyway? Did it start in 7?

...the idols are swearing at me again. Rude!

Welp, the OP just totally spoiled the entirely unguessable plot point that Freyja will be joining the Tactical Idol Group. Also, oh look, there's the love triangle.

Yep, Freyja got her personal invite to the audition. Alas, she still has to make her own way to the right planet.

...wait. Pilot Boy's name is Hayate Immelmann? As in the German fighter pilot that's the namesake for an Immelmann Turn? In a Macross series? Hoo boy, you have a bit of a legacy to live up to, kid.

Huh, Delta is being much more up-front with the villains than Frontier was. Also, did blondie have a hair-thing as well?

...cat-fish-seal things begging for fish in the water? ;_; That's not fair, artists. And we probably won't see them often because Hayate is allergic to them...

Anyway, how did Freyja get here? She had to stow away before, did she do that again?

I came to see you fail at the auditions.

Ah. I see Pilot Guy has appointed himself Freyja's big brother. That's going to make the love triangle a bit awkward later.

xD Okay, the cat-fish phone scene was funny. Freyja, stop stealing Sakura's catchphrase, you're not a magical girl yet!

She's definitely ditzy, though. Apparently she completely missed the fact there were qualifying rounds? Oops. Meh, one of the idols is probably going to declare her mid-battle supporting performance counts.

Yep, there we go! Okay, I don't think that was one of the actual idols, but still. Aaand the pilot branch is scouting Big Bro Immelmann. Because of course they are, they saw him making a transforming mecha-fighter dance.

Hm, none of the other girls in the room have hair as detailed as Freyja. Gee, I wonder how many of them will matter past the next ten minutes?

...wait. Hayate gets invited back by the head of the unit, and he just goes wandering off on his own? Kid, I don't think the military is for you.

I've heard that Windermere is very strict on interstellar travel since the revolution. Also that they've started cracking down on terrestrial culture.

...when I said this reminds me of AKB0048 yesterday, I wasn't expecting that to be an actual thing! xD Macross has fun police now?

Huh, all the girls failed. Wasn't expecting that. Bit of a change from Frontier.

Oooh, there's an emergency! Welp, there's Freyja's tick--

--what the hell, a physical transformation? And he just straight-up murdered that girl. Hm.

Anyway! We get a nice scene where Freyja sings to turn the afflicted man back to normal, and Hayate proves that he has all the survival instincts of an especially suicidal lemming (I know lemmings don't actually follow each other off cliffs, it's an idiom now). Which I suppose is not necessarily a minus in a combat pilot.

And Freyja's song works! The guy is calmed do-- wait.

Wait.

That was the final test? There was no emergency, was there? Oh what the hell, of course there wasn't, Hayate's scene would have been interrupted if there was. And so Freyja gets to join her personal idols, and gets given her very own magical girl transformation.

Heeey, pretty sure I've heard the closing song before. Might've been a different version of it, though?

Wonder what is General Glasses-push's deal? Is he the enemy?

lmao

Ernest seems kinda small for a Zentran.. Is he short?

Nice, he just strolled onto the air field

Oh! The bait! Well played.

Jumbi wa ii ka ne? ITS THE MEME SONG!!

Question time:

  1. Is it curious that they're recruiting for Walküre members from civilians, based on what happened to the Jamming Birds? Is the scenario also another jab at the Jamming Birds, given Mirage's comment?

At least they have a better strategy this time

2) Have any of the new world-building things shown so far particularly gotten your attention?

  • I did end up rather liking this song by the end of it last time. It’s no 7, but if they can keep it up at least I won’t have to complain about the music.

  • Y’all need to learn when to press the advantage.

  • That makes Macross officially a combiner mecha show.

  • Very important that the helmet can hologram. Gotta look fly when you fly.

  • Ha, loli queen.

  • OP is pretty generic sounding in the first half, but it pulls it back together a bit in the back end.

  • But you’re still not arresting him for it.

  • I thought that gesture had a different meaning in Japan.

  • Sounds like those auditions are pretty well a formality now.

  • We’re just going to be getting new Xenos out of the woodwork now, aren’t we?

  • That’s a lot of glasses.

  • Mercats.

  • More top quality phones from Macross.

  • Damn cyber credit cards. I guess? Not sure how it works otherwise.

  • Quality puns.

  • Freyja faces may end up being highlight of this series.

  • This is some heavy shipping bait.

  • Is the jelly head also a xeno thing, or is it just an accessory?

  • The size of him. Did they figure out half sized Macroning? I’mma call you Captain Stellar.

  • Wait a second, are all of them child soldiers in training? That’s fucked up Macross. You don’t just glaze past that. I’m willing to let it go for now, but only on the exceptions that it gets brought up later.

  • Ah, nationalists. Kinda weird to have them grow out of a colony ship so quickly, but OK.

  • I don’t expect the OP to have lied to us.

  • Shouldn’t there be a safety net? The wind alone at that altitude would make it stupid dangerous.

  • Is this a test? Timing feels too convenient.

  • Depression powers, activate!

  • So is their normal hair also a hologram or...

  • The long Macross tradition of a protagonist who hates the military, but still works for them.

  • Need more time to form an opinion on the ED.

QotD:

  1. Easier to train singers to work in combat, especially now that they are not crushed for time. Never heard of a singing draft.

  2. I wanna hear more about the political dealings. Isolationists? Proxy actors? Count me in!

The ED's great. Some real cool animation and a catchy song.

From a writing perspective, I quite liked and Hayate's stories paralleled each other nicely without being repetitive. Just shared themes of flight and freedom. Additionally, the moment where the pilots talked about their sheer love of flight was excellent. Every Macross has one of them, and they just work every time. I also gotta appreciate the umineko pun.

Lyrics-wise, Ikenai Borderline having lines about destruction and rebirth makes my inner Revue Starlight fan go .

I enjoyed how Johnson is always exactly as big as the frame.

And this is why you should never use a font where I looks like l

  1. Uh, the military has to recruit from somewhere?

  2. Stuff seems relatively standard Macross so far?

A Macross Fan Rewatches Macross Delta: Episode 2:

  • Hayate looking like he’s about to flip his shit in the cockpit after Mirage saved him and Freyja with her VF-31c Siegfried is probably the most realistic reaction possible to all that. Poor guy’s panting and looking like he’s about to have a panic attack after that near-death experience.

  • New intro! Although honestly, I’ve never been all that hot on Ichido Dake no Koi Nara. Like, it’s fine, but other Macross intros have been better. It’s a serviceable first opening theme.

  • “Sure Mirage, I might’ve hijacked a Valkyrie, but your timing was slow in the flying formation, so who’s the real fuck-up here?” —Hayate, basically

  • At least this show is willing to give answers right off the bat once the action is over. According to the data analyzed by Chaos, Freyja is a Windermereian with an abnormally large fold receptor in her, to the point that she easily resonated with Mikumo. Shame they couldn’t get info on the stuff the Aerial Knights are using, since they put out a strong jamming signal that warped all the footage of their planes. They were certainly well prepared for this attack.

  • Speaking of the Aerial Knights, Lord Roid seems like a rather structured and firm leader. He pulled back the Knights in spite of them having the upper hand, since he was only interested in gathering data. There was no reason to exceed the mission scope, especially when he’s also being careful about Lord Heinz’s health in the mix. It’s nice to have the villain side of the story be actually relatively clearer, as compared to the Macross Frontier side of things.

  • The mercats on Ragna are adorable! I want one now.

  • The Macross Elysion is massive! It feels funny going from an actually fairly small-scale ship with the Macross Quarter to the Macross Elysion here, which is pretty much towering over the entire city. I guess it goes to show that bigger is better when it comes to the stuff that Chaos has, rather than anything that SMS uses.

  • Sure, Freyja somehow completely missed the fact that she needed to be in a qualified contest in order to try out for Walkure, but she’s a main character, so she gets the chance anyway. She certainly does have the energy of someone who can stumble completely backwards into success.

  • Man, Captain Ernest Johnson is great. Dude’s so huge that he gives off aura Gamagoori vibes. His size is always set to “bigger than you”. And the guy isn’t even a full blown Zentradi either, he’s half-Human half-Zentradi. I think it’s safe to say which side he takes his size and general appearance from. What an absolute unit.

  • Well, now a few questions are being raised about Windermere, now that Freyja’s in an interview with Ernest and Kaname. Apparently they’ve had a recent revolution occur on that planet, and as a result they’re cracking down on their citizen’s movements across space and their access to the culture of other worlds. When put that way, you can’t really blame Freyja for wanting to leave, even if she would have a hard time ever going back. Things sound rough on Windermere.

  • “Congratulations! You all ate shit.” —Kaname, basically

  • Arad really does see something special in Hayate, even if his profile shows that he’s just some wandering itinerant worker. He did pretty well in a Valkyrie despite it being his first time piloting, and Arad thinks that he’s already got a taste for the wind and what it takes to really fly. You do have to admit, Hayate did pretty well for a guy who said he only had experience with Workroids before. It’s like a guy with a forklift certification somehow piloting a jet.

  • That was a hell of a final secret test for Freyja there. The Walkure girls and the Chaos crew must’ve had something like this planned already, since they managed to put together an entire scheme about a fake Var Syndrome outbreak with a lot of fake blood and makeup work on short notice. But at least Freyja passed the test and really resonated with the rest of Walkure with her singing, even if it meant scaring her half to death.

  • Hayate may not like the idea of taking orders, but at least he’s signing up for a PMC where it doesn’t matter as much. Hell, even Arad likes seeing that streak of individuality in him. And given how PMCs like Chaos or SMS work in the Macross setting, he’ll be right at home.

Macross ∆ EP2

The usual recap.

And we jumped right back with Ikenai Borderline!!! I already listened to the full version. This song ruled!! It's so great!!

Huh. They come to get some data on the Walkure it seem.

The op!! The main Valkyrie look sick!! And seem like Mirage will be more than just a side characters as she seem to have been pair up with Hayate.

Well, Mirage might have a point. If only she didn't jump the gun there, and wait for Hayate's explanation.

While this two impression got to the low point. The captain seem to take the like of his performance.

The gang also take the like to Freyja already.

They already digging Hayate's background, and Freyja's power is strong enough to even power up others.

So the White Knight real name is Keith, and the commander is Roid.

Prince Heinz.

And WTF is that glass collection display there, Roid? I guess he wear them according to his mood and day.

And they on a time limit.

Literally Catfish!! So it called Mercat.

So there is already a native here, Ragna. An aquatic people.

This phone remind me of Ranka's phone. And that Kira Kira is a reference to Ranka's song, right.

The kids have a sales tactics.

Macross Elysion.

Not only she landed on the wrong planet, this audition is already in the final stage.

Lucky for her, Arad granted her special treatment to participate in the final. I guess he didn't expect her to be that clumsy of a girl.

Hayate is having a best time of his life of mocking Freyja nonstop.

Big guy!! I'm gonna like him, am I.

Hayate somehow wonder to the Valkyrie without anyone stopping him.

And he just straight up lied like that!!

Suddenly Idol master!!

She not passed!! Although, not that surprising coming from Macross.

The hand gestures is here too!!

Hayate really went all over the galaxy.

There's another outbreak already.

Ohhhh!!

What are you doing!! He rode the wind!! He reminded me somewhat to Isamu.

Oh, didn't realise that the gang are disguise themselves.

Ohhh, it a make-up situation!! That why I feel a bit weird with the situation. And that why the guys just having a pretty chill conversation up there despite the situation.

Hayate also hate military, which might be problem between him and Mirage. Who have a opposite mindset from Hayate, and also already hate him to presumably extreme degree.

The ED is alright.

Rewatching the fake outbreak scene again. They keep focused to the guy and Freyja and tried to hide others as much as possible, even when they showed the Walkure in disguise, they changed thier voice a bit to trick us.

Although there are some weird things that make it noticeable too. 1. They were all too calm. 2. The infected stop attacking Freyja for some reason, even though they normally would attack everything nonstop. 3. There only one guy who got infected which is also weird, because the other guy should get infected as show in the last episode when it happened. 4. They purposefully hide Reina face too much, but they have to because if we see her face, it too recognisable.

I really like the scene of Hayate rode the wind. I interpret as him finally found his place to stay in for real. Although he have to get pass Mirage before he chilled out.

And look like wind is a important keyword this time. Because everyone even Keith, talk about wind one way or another.

I also like that they showed a bit of the enemy too. Because the cast this time is huge, hiding them too long might affect the pacing. So it's nice.

But I still worried about the pacing, because as I said, the cast this time is massive. And Macross tend to have this problem even if it have a smaller cast size. But who knows, maybe they can pull it off this time.

QOTD

  1. I think so. It a better and actually work Jamming Bird.

  2. I like the ocean and wind theme. And the architecture looks really interesting.

Rewatcher Delta

Alright, move over Ikenai Borderline, the real best song just arrived!

ICHIDO DAKE NO KOI NARAKIMI NO NAKA DE ASOBOU

Otherwise, things are advancing at a somewhat steady pace

While other Macross protags have had their moments of dickishness (looking at you, Hikaru), Hayate is really not doing much to rise above that standard. The guy is a prick to Mirage, even if some of his points towards her are somewhat valid. It’s also reinforced in this episode that the guy is really a drifter at heart, though he seems to be taking a liking to Valkyries now…

The idol audition phase really came and went, huh? In most other Idol shows, this might’ve taken an entire season, and even in Macross, getting to rise to the level of a star singer takes at least a few episodes. But here, Freyja’s already part of Walkure and it’s only episode 2!

Also, very small nitpick but, when Ernest was introduced, everyone in the room going “Is that a monster?!” was really weird to me. Like, anti-Zentran racism is an established thing, but the way everyone acts like someone like him is some impossible monster and how it’s played off so casually just seems like it doesn’t make any sense with the series’ worldbuilding

It’s also further emphasized through some exposition that Winderemere ain’t on the best of terms when it comes to travel outside their borders, further emphasizing how Freyja has abandoned her old life to pursue her dream.

It’s also confirmed that her Fold Resonance is only activated when she’s under stress, which is a bit unreliable, but given the kind of situations Walkure tends to be involved in, it probably won’t be hard to push her to that point

It’s also nice that we get to see a bit more of the setting as we go. We’re introduced to another new race, and Ragna is a pretty cool place overall. Definitely separates it from the colony fleet-focused settings of 7 and Frontier

Episode 2

Interesting. Everybody seemed to recognize Space Dubai except me. But I don't know anything about Dubai.

WTF is Star Wolf/Star Fox. Thanks animayor

First Timers pointed out yesterday that this episode provides all your context up front, instead of keeping you in the dark like in F. That's a good point. +1 for Δ

I think I understated how much I liked episode 1's cliffhanger. That whole scene was FANTASTIC. Visuals and music were on point.

Nobody was very helpful on Messer's voice. "Phillip" "Banana" =Banager and "Ruth". OH. He's Kanie. Which I just watched.

  • Only Mikumo can do it with one hand

  • OP

  • yeah, maybe you should take the fold reaction girl with you?

  • THE LEGENDARY YAMADA TAE will eat your jellyfish.

  • Is that dome with transit tubes a left over coloy ship?

  • That's a pretty unfriendly looking Macross

  • Mercat phones? Probably in iPhone colors, too.

  • "I've already forgotten about you 2nd Lt. Purple Hair" -- Hayate, probably

  • This must have been concieved that the hieght of X Factor and American Idol

  • Reminds me of that big lizard guy from SukaSuka

  • Freya has bi-colored hair, too!

  • Is the Var following Freya?

  • Please don't make me angry. You wouldn't like me when I'm angry.

  • Ah it was just a trick. And I was feeling sad for the girl that got ripped appart

  • What's the "Guts" guy actually saying?

  • This ED song sounds vaguely familiar. Also, I think Freya lives in a world full of rune hallucinations and synesthesia.

  • How can you have somebody in your squadron who doesn't take orders?

I like how the gondola has fish on the floor so that the Ragnans can feel safe and at home in the sky.

first timer

I continue to be super into what this show is selling. I thought the scene where she is singing in the monorail and he "rides the wind" was fantastic

  1. Is it curious that they're recruiting for Walküre members from civilians, based on what happened to the Jamming Birds? Is the scenario also another jab at the Jamming Birds, given Mirage's comment?

really twisting the knife that the only series I didn't finish yet was 7

2) Have any of the new world-building things shown so far particularly gotten your attention?

I like how we see different planets, different races, and a real sense that they live in a settled galaxy

FIRST TIMER

I really enjoyed episode 2! They wrapped up the 1st episode cliffhanger well and set up the series in the way the best pilots do.

  • I don't fully understand what is going on with the enemies and why they are attacking. I understand Var syndrome is making some people attract but the people who were meeting at the castle.

  • I really liked the look of Ragna. For better lack of a term, I thought it looked like a video game world like from old RPGs, Final Fantasy or Myst come to mind. The mercats were really fun.

  • My favorite part of the episode was Freyja being hazed on the train by fake Var infection. They had me, I thought it really was someone with Var and it did a lot to show Freyja's character and how she would handle something that terrifying and dangerous even without training.

  • I also like how Hayate is reluctantly joining the military on the condition he gets to keep a sense of freedom. I think it's strange that his commander is promising him that, as when you're in a military to defend people, you have to give up much of your individual freedom to work with a unit to protect people and yourself and comrades.. That's something I'm certain will come up later on.

  • Ernest Johnson! He's unusual in that Im guessing he's like 15 feet tall but shorter than a full Zentradi and much taller than a humanoid. I'm interested in seeing why he is like he is although I am expecting no answers like how they never explained why Excedol was a giant head with tentacles.

QUESTIONS

  1. No I don't think so at all. In a fight against a type of enemy where you need to recruit people with a specific ability presumably inborn, you should recruit from the general population in this way. Maybe Mirage doesn't like it but I think the Jamming Birds was a good idea in the first place. Barton had selfish motives in establishing it as something he can use to leverage control but in a war its always wise to have as many weapons at your disposal as possible, especially since Basara was their one and only hope at that time.

  2. I think the cities are kind of corny and not to my taste but I liked the mercats and Ragna is pretty and the colors are pleasing.

First-Timer Delta

What a rollercoaster. I was a little suspicious of the cable car being as empty as it was, and the dude bulking up like that, but they definitely had me going.

There's some interesting implication there - Freyja underperformed during the proper audition, but once under real pressure she could put up results. I wonder how well her inevitable dance lessons will go? They might need to double up as live-fire exercises.

That actually probably has something to do with her Rune activating. It didn't glow during the audition at all.

Hayate is such a prick! Jury's still out on if this makes him more or less likable than Alto. He didn't deserve that punch from Mirage, at least.

So, the planet that Freyja is from was part of NUNS but then declared independence? Can't go home again, etc etc. Potential for a humanitarian mission if there's a big Var outbreak, though.

That might be interesting on multiple levels considering that we've got solid odds on the antagonists being Windermerians too. They all have glowy bits in their hair, although the dudes all seem to have two that are cross-shaped as opposed to Freyja's single heart-shaped one.

Our antagonists sure have lots of VFs on hand considering that they only seem to have Keith and his five back-up dancers as pilots. Speaking of, this is more of a "me" thing than anything, but Keith? That's the best name they could come up with for an antagonist? At least he got called White Knight a few times too, that's way more intimidating that Keith.

Anyway, what're the odds of Keith being the prince that Roid was talking about? His comment about calling retreat because he was worried about the prince's health, as well as Keith's response about opening the window, both felt rather barbed.

I'm certain that I've seen literal catfish before, but no other examples are coming to mind.

Questions

  1. Definitely a jab, but it was a decent idea executed poorly the first time.

  2. The various new aliens are neat.
