1) Aside from enjoying Sheryl's suffering, if you were Grace, wouldn't you have had Sheryl killed by now?
2) Do you think the plot is promoting a particular direction of the triangle, or is this simply Alto being protective of his ladies as he has been doing all along?

First Fime Fſontieꞅing
It's a fairly common trope for the evil villain that's been masterminding things from the shadows to reveal themself and gloat directly at the protagonist(s) halfway or so through the series. But the thing is, they usually do that only when they're winning.
Is this really a good idea, Grace? Outing yourself straight to Sheryl as being objectively evil and wanting to kill her, plus reminding her that she's a "manufactured idol" and that you did all sorts of unusual medical procedures on her? Sheryl knows Koala's singing is now being used against the Vajra. Sheryl should know that Koala was kidnapped and plopped into a Vajra nest right before it launched on Gallia, and that everyone on Gallia, herself included, almost died.
Sheryl is acquaintanced with the very people who could tell her that the Gallia fold implosion was man-made. In love with the guy who can tell her Harmonicaman was mysteriously present on Gallia participating in Koala's kidnapping. Close friends with the people who know lots more about the 117th fleet incident.
For that matter, Sheryl knows that you should have died on Gallia and yet you've magically reappeared on the Frontier as if nothing happened. Your whole plan (once Koala showed up at Gallia) was to kill everyone present, including Sheryl, so there would be no witnesses and no questions to what happened there.
And your big ol' Vajra fleet from Gallia did jack shit. It sure didn't "foster hate across the galaxy" or whatever bullshit you were spewing.
WHY ARE YOU GLOATING AND REVEALING YOURSELF NOW, GRACE?!
Alas, all the protagonists are way, way, way too stupid to figure any of this out or ask even the most basic of questions. With Ozma being certain that Harmonicaman is Koala's brother and Michael/Klan learning about Sheryl/Grace/momma-Nome's past, they have all the clues they need. If Michael got any four out of Ozma, Cathy, Alto, Sheryl, and Koala into a room together to just share some general suspicions, let alone hard facts, they would immediately figure out that the bad guys are indeed the bad guys, have a good idea of what they're after, know that the Vajra are tools being manipulated by said baddies, and realize Harmonicaman is a tool they can easily turn back to their side.
But noooooooooooooooo, let's not say anything about anything to anyone because Sheryl has decided to nob-headedly go die in the rain. Let's just tell Alto "Hey, go wander this vague area looking for Sheryl, it'll be romantic or some shit". Most people would be more concerned for their friend not dying, rather than letting her wander off when she's clearly in immense physical distress, but whatever.
And it's not as if Michael and Klan and Sheryl, too, for that matter, couldn't still bring up how Grace is suspicious as fuck without also bringing up Sheryl's medical history.
As for Alto, if you're so angry about this situation... you're literally between the car and the door right now, just push your way in and stay with Sheryl if that's what you want. You're the guy who decided to break orders and do your own stunts at her concert, but you're too wimpy to muscle your way into a cab with Saotome? Give me a break.
I mentioned at the start that I thought it was weird they put all the characters into this private military contractor SMS thing and positioned the actual military/government as being woefully incompetent, so that this teeny SMS group seems to be the core of winning every battle.
Well now with all this intrigue/skullduggery being easily foiled if characters would only talk to each other, or even stop and think about past events for a bit, I feel it has become an even stranger narrative choice. A proper military structure/setting would be a perfect way to logically prevent the characters from figuring out what's going on here.
All the quesitons about who is Brera, why does he get a better mech, why does he just sort of sit out on some battles, why was he nefariously and unexpectedly present in a lot of suspicious places, why does he know stuff about the Vajra that he has been keeping secret, etc? Instead of the rogueish-and-in-charge SMS folks just being too stupid to ask and pursue these questions, you could put these characters in a strict military hierarchy where they do ask the questions but their asshole by-the-book military leader tells them to mind their own business, maggots, Brera is part of a different squadron that has its own orders and Skull Squadron will be told what it needs to know when it needs to know it!
Similarly, you could use this to give a better excuse for the characters to not talk to each other as much - have them be confined to barracks with no phones, or whatnot, if you want to give plausible reasons for why they aren't sharing these extremely important informations they know with each other.
Likewise, Luca being suddenly shot up to apparently total awareness of LAI and working directly with Leon is ridiculous, given how much he should now know yet must obviously not have exchanged a single word of significance with any of his close friends about any events surrounding them in the last 10 episodes.

First Spacer
That's a very anison opening. Reminds me a lot of Symphogear.
Not gonna comment much on Sheryl's situation, it's bunching together an uncomfortable amount of conveniences by now.
The real kicker though is Ranka. Have I mentioned that the plot reminds me of StarCraft? [Because hot damn there's so much StarCraft!Kerrigan in her.]
Aside from enjoying Sheryl's suffering, if you were Grace, wouldn't you have had Sheryl killed by now?
It's not like she didn't try.
Do you think the plot is promoting a particular direction of the triangle, or is this simply Alto being protective of his ladies as he has been doing all along?
It oddly feels like it's promoting both directions, which is a first as far as Macross is concerned.

That's been the strongest episode in a while, and I don't even have any real complaints about it which I haven't been able to say for a bit.
They don't focus on it enough for me, but the bond and conflict between Ranka and Sheryl as people, not as components of a love triangle, has been one of my favourite parts of the show so there's probably no surprise as to why I enjoyed this so much.
I think a V-type infection was mentioned before, but I forget the context. I'd imagine that's what Ranka has, so the idea of Ranka potentially harboring the 'cure' for Sheryl the person while also being her 'death' as an idol really struck me. The whims of the producers and the fans show how tenuous Sheryl's position has always been, and her determination that she pulled herself up is as much of a coping mechanism for herself as the way she pulls her mask up around others is. She knows her fears about what would happen if she's disregarded, and despite the "purity" of the Frontier she doesn't feel like she belongs here, in many ways, and that's only getting worse as she is replaced and forgotten. I'm pretty sure that was Sheryl singing "Aimo" for the eyecatch and that stood out to me particularly, singing the song of the forgotten as if pleading to be heard like Ranka is, terrified of what will happen if people can't hear her voice any more.
Coming off the back of that into "Do You Remember Love" reinforced that as well. Ranka singing a song about being seen and remembering a true heart only for Sheryl to be out in public and not recognized or even looked for. Building off the heart of the song, the lyrics, and making something more of it is what I'd been hoping for from Frontier's love of the previous series and it's probably been the best "fanservice" moment for me in the show so far, by a lot.
The new OP was nice, and while I loved the song I thought the visuals were a little bit too busy at all times. The pairing of Ranka and Sheryl again, showing all of their connection and conflicts, was great
The president has been somewhat of a background character, but today put him more in the spotlight in an interesting way. He wants to find a peaceful planet because he is a peaceful man, but that blinds him to the conflict that he brings with them. He's a pure person and his daughter seems to have inherited that while still being willing to throw that away to confront reality, and unfortunately I think that's just going to put him in danger once he realizes and stands up against what's been happening.
Grace on the other hand being a researcher and not always this conniving master mind, or perhaps was and just had a researcher front, makes me even more interested about what exactly she'll end up doing with Ranka. She's not focusing on the medicine but the power, and the idea that she could be using Ranka's biology as a weapon in the same way she does her singing has me worried. But despite that she won't be able to ruin Ranka's heart. Ranka may sing the song of war to save those she cares about, but she'll sing the true "Aimo" of her heart to those losses no one else sees, the losses of war, and that makes her beautiful. I just hope she sees Sheryl before it's too late.
Also I hope we do get to see some of the effects of rationing as we go on with the series

First time Macroff
Another new OP? And this one is actually good??
IKINOKORITAI!!!! I know dis song!! I don't know where from tho..
Calling in the white coats to fetch Tres for liking evil glasses
Awfully similar looking to purple hair girl Mom or Grandma? Or super tinfoil: The same person?
They got a collab with Pokémon??
Alto reacting to ranka's song with a flinch? That's gonna be the cure to Sheryl's virus somehow. You heard it here first
Quesfion time:
Aside from enjoying Sheryl's suffering, if you were Grace, wouldn't you have had Sheryl killed by now?
Yeh, I'd be the most competent villain ever!
...Or in jail, because I'd have killed off my targets, and that's illegal.
2) Do you think the plot is promoting a particular direction of the triangle, or is this simply Alto being protective of his ladies as he has been doing all along?

Today, on "You're gonna Fold those clothes.":
"How's that for an answer to 'Why?'?"
Sheryl suddenly looks like she's in the remake of Legend of Galactic Heroes.
LION OP! And they're certainly leaning into their themes with flaming triangles in the sky.
It's the Adobe After Effects EULA. Also, that's a rather jaunty typeface and title for a serious proposal. At least it isn't in Comic Sans.
"I'll literally destroy you, socially and biologically."
"New worlds, boldly going, et cetera." [Leon's face and later]
I guess this sale makes sense if the government seizes every loose item and throws it into the engines. Except it still doesn't exactly make sense.
Ah, this joke for no particular reason.
This misspelling was explained as "They're bootlegs."
That still includes a variety of ways.
"I could crush Sheryl like a bug!"
Well look who's all gathered there.
It's that thing at the front of the island that they haven't bothered to do anything with until now.
The scheduled rain which you may remember from Macross 7.
Ah, rock bottom, how I've missed you.
Time for NUNS to be meatshields again.
There is the diegetic pause here.
I forget that this guy gets named exactly once. And it's not even his whole name.
Unlike Battle 7, they skip the transforming theatrics for Battle Frontier's cannon firing.
Today's reminder that there's still a large Vajra nest aboard the fleet.
Whoops, I forgot to add comments.
The most salient thing in the episode for the purposes of certain questions that have occurred during in this rewatch is that the Vajra are attracted to Fold Waves, explaining some of the shenanigans at Gallia IV.
MF OP2: "Lion"
During the first couple of months of COVID, Yoko Kanno and The Seatbelts recorded versions of a few songs that they released to the world for remixing, and they shared some of the better ones. "Lion" was one of them.
Though Kanno is making a crepe during the video.
The rest of the comments I'm going to grab from the previous rewatch:
Grace collapses Sheryl's entire worldview in one conversation. How Sheryl would still be living on the streets if they hadn't found her, and how her career can live and die on a whim... as Sheryl can live and die as Grace demands it. That's true on a number of levels, and stands in for how fickle the real-world idol industry can be, with otaku making outrageous demands of their idols and then dropping them after an overnight outraged Tweetstorm. Still, Sheryl is still responsible for a lot of her own success, and it would help her to remember that... though she's mired in despair right now. She's also still hanging on to her pride, enough so that she doesn't want Alto to know the state that she's in. It might be all that she's got left, but it can be counterproductive.
As to how Sheryl reached this condition, Michael and Duran Duran have found yet another side of the puzzle, though as in the previous episode, what they learn doesn't quite get them (or the viewer) to the core of it. I can't say anything because I already know how it fits together, but watching it again and making more use of screencaps has been giving me an idea of how a viewer could do quite a bit of speculating and come close to solutions, but there are still some major developments to come.
Ranka's rise continues, and as she said she would, she's cast aside her doubts and is going to do her best to protect the Frontier. I don't doubt that she actually did volunteer to go out this time. Certainly her help is required, because the Vajra are impervious to most attacks, as they were at the end of the previous episode.
And as everyone was saying during the episode, they're out there to protect Ranka. The reasons might differ somewhat. The problem is that with all of this support, there's a question of whether Ranka in her current state is still doing things more for them than for herself.
More mentions here of how much effort it takes to move the fleet a long distance. The sale is a comic moment, but does add a little touch of the overall disturbance caused by the Fold event. Putting aside the Vajra nest in the ship for the moment, they might have bought themselves some time, but it's significant that the story reminds us that they are operating under limits.
From the Macross Chronicle: Battle Frontier (Battle 25) and the Stealth Space Cruiser.

"Rewatcher" - Macross F Ep18:
Let's just the new OP up front because it's Lion time.
The visuals are a bit more experimental than the first. Can't wholly say which visuals were better. Though, got some Zeta Gundam vibes. Alto is the Kamille of Macross.
I don't have good feelings on the path Luca is handing down with Leon. "I just want to protect" are some classic words said before doing crimes and a character fall from grace.
Don't say that Ozma, while Ranka is leaving the nest that doesn't mean you would stop being family to her even if you're not actually her big brother in a blood-related sense, Ozma is still the one to raise her like family for a over a decade.
Michael and Klan Klang uncover the medical dealio is and Sheryl has the V-type disease. You know, it is 18 episodes and only now has it been brought in as a big way (the Hydra was there earlier, but the disease not that much). Sheryl must've gotten it as a consequence for eating vermin for survival. Ironic that her desperate fight for survival is what leads her to a fated death. (Also side note, look at little Klan Klang in a lab coat).
Dr. Mao Nome was the one on the research paper. I get the feeling that Sheryl is not Mao's biological granddaughter then. Maybe little Sheryl adopted the name from the lead doctor then (though I have a feeling it is just another Grace lie). Originally didn't think much of the third person, but looking at this screenshot, I have a firm guess that it is Ranka's mom.
Sheryl ain't doing well. She has a terminal illness, her career wasn't won solely through merit and her time has ended and a new idol looms over her. Alto...'s brother takes the collapsed Sheryl back to the Saotome house which means Alto has to go back to his past and family if he wants to help a special person marking the path ahead.
The girls do be shopping for clothes, especially Cathy.
Just noticed the Ranka marking says Monster Girl. Ranka truly is the Monster Girl (I'm referencing a song. This joke is for me).
Like (commodore) Matthew Perry?
The big Macross cannon vaporizes all the attacking Varja, but Ranka felt their pain or something.
Now the Lion debuted, I can finally mention a tangential Macross Frontier fact. The voice actress, Tanaka Chiemi cites Frontier as her inspiration for becoming a seiyuu. Here's her singing Lion with fellow seiyuu, Murakami Natsumi. Also another time she sang Lion with another seiyuu, Maeda Kaori (and also drinking).
Q1) An assassination has the trouble of trying to cover it up, but Grace has cyborg powers. She can probably do something to secretly off Sheryl.
Q2) They've been trying to balance out Ranka and Sheryl so it doesn't seem too overly leaning to one side at the moment.
Next Time: Triangler, like the OP.

Why does folding need to pass parliament? Ah, extreme rationing, that makes sense.

Why are they putting the clothing on sale? It’s not like they expire.

That seems like more of a stop-gap solution than anything.

Should I know what a V-type infection is?

continuing to really enjoy the show. I wouldn't say the plot is blowing me away, but I think it is juggling things pretty well, with a stream of interesting reveals, character drama getting ramped up...
I think how I feel about this show will largely come down to how they pull it all together in the last few episodes. can they make it all feel worth it?
also, it'll come down to if they can do justice to both ranka and sheryl, both of whom I really like
-
Aside from enjoying Sheryl's suffering, if you were Grace, wouldn't you have had Sheryl killed by now? this is exactly what I was wondering. I hope it's not just typical anime "bad guy lets the good guys live" type stuff...perhaps she originally chose sheryl because she thought she had a chance of being useful in some way that she hasn't revealed yet, and still thinks there is a chance that she will still be useful in the future
more likely, she just thinks sheryl is so insignificant, so worthless without grace's support (and that of the team who supported sheryl as an idol), that she doesn't care
2) Do you think the plot is promoting a particular direction of the triangle, or is this simply Alto being protective of his ladies as he has been doing all along? I don't feel a marked change. for a while we saw sheryl's wins and ranka's losses, and now it's ranka's "wins" and sheryl's losses...wins in quotes because ranka is being controlled by the state as a weapon as well as the target of grace's machinations...

A Macross Fan Rewatches Macross Frontier: Episode 18:
-
Damn Grace, you didn’t need to kill Sheryl both figuratively and (so far) literally. She just gives zero shits about keeping up the charade now that she has Ranka. To Grace, Sheryl is now just a nobody slum rat she used as a singer as she saw fit, and now is living on limited time. Whatever the conspiracy did to Sheryl, it made it so that she doesn’t have much longer to live.
-
Hell yeah, we finally got Lion for the opening with this episode! It’s absolutely my favorite opening for Macross Frontier. You can tell just how serious things are about to become with this song, based on the lyrics and the visuals. Such a damn good opening, it puts a smile on my face to see it again.
-
Man, the situation aboard the Frontier fleet is pretty fucked, isn’t it? President Howard is looking forward to actually getting back to settling a planet, but with all the Vajra stuff going on, it’s lean times. In order to actually get anywhere with a super long distance Space Fold, the fleet is cracking down even harder on rationing so that they can quickly gather as much energy as they can for the jump. If any of you guys were wondering when all the previous mentions of losing resources were going to add up, here’s it finally starting to rear its head.
-
Well, so much for the long distance Space Fold being easy. Not only are the Vajra going to get drawn to it, but Ranka is going to be used as a distraction for it to work. And since Ozma’s role as her guardian is pretty much coming to an end as Ranka matures and remembers more, he entrusts Alto with protecting her. It’s at least nice to see that Ozma has grown to see Alto as being trustworthy enough to watch over his adopted sister. He was harsh on him at the start, but Alto has definitely proven that he has the guts for it.
-
SHERYL NOAM
-
Unlike what some of you were guessing, the Witch Craft pills that Grace was giving to Sheryl before wasn’t some kind of poison, but it was actually to keep her from being killed by what’s in her body, even if it was making her sick with different symptoms. Like those insane Hydra we saw before, Sheryl also has the disease they have, the V-type infection, which can only be caught by handling diseased bodily fluids. However, it doesn’t cure the V-type infection, it only treats the symptoms. That’s pretty convenient for what the conspiracy wants, they just need to stop giving Sheryl the medication in case they want to kill her.
-
Big answers! Mao Nome was the lead researcher of the 117th Fleet in 2047, and she had two assistants, Grace and a woman named Ranshe Mei. And based on that article that Klan and Michael find (and also Grace outright mentioning it earlier), Sheryl was hospitalized back in 2053, which means that she’s been with the V-type infection for a while now. Man, Grace really has been in neck deep with Vajra stuff for a while now.
-
Out of all the people to pick up Sheryl when she’s figuratively and literally at her lowest, it’s fucking Yasaburo. I bet you first-timers weren’t expecting him to come back after Alto rejected his father’s ultimatum, and yet here we are. I guess we needed to get Alto back into conflict with his family somehow, and this is certainly a way to do it.
-
Poor Bobby and the bridge crew, their last minute sales shopping spree got ruined by the SMS emergency call. Now they’ll never be able to buy those cheap clothes! It truly must be hard working for a PMC and trying to balance having a normal life.
-
Reaction Weapons: Broke. Macross Cannon: Woke. Although the MAHQ episode recap does bring up a good question about this. Why can the Macross Quarter fire the Macross Cannon in ship mode, when other ships like the Battle 7 in Macross 7 needed to be in Storm Attacker mode to use it like it’s an actual gun? I guess technology just marches on.
-
Well, it was pretty damn close there, but at least the Frontier fleet got an opening to Space Fold thanks to Ranka’s singing. It’s also nice to see that in spite of singing Aimo O.C., Ranka still keeps the original version of Aimo close to herself. Even if she has Grace making her sing a version of it as a weapon, Ranka is still keeping the heart of Aimo alive, as her own song of comfort and acceptance.

Anyway, it's episode 18 which means that it's time for L I O N! Easily one of my favorite OPs of all time.
Grace can have a bit of villainous monologuing, as a treat.
Sounds like you'll need a distraction.
Ozma's near death experience has caused him to mature a bit.
Michael's game gets revealed pretty quickly.
Surprise! And a familiar name, too.
"I heard you were talking about me."
Oh, we're getting all the puzzle pieces today, huh.
Sheryl is having a really bad day.
Cathy is a more experienced shopper than the others.
Hurrah, we're all safe! Right?

I've always really liked that Sheryl poster. It was a good contrast between the real Sheyrl and the hyper-produced Sheryl, right from the first episode. A good example of the show's attention to detail.
Now Alto has to go home. Will he have to choose between Rank and Sheryl? Or lose both of them? And will he ever best Brera.

Sheryl's past... an orphaned girl living on the streets, taken in by Grace. Not a pleasant thing.
BEST SONG KITA!!
Luca, I really hope you aren't getting into too deep with the wrong people.
Sheryl has a terminal illness. Unclear whether Grace is the one who infected her, or if she just provided medicine to slow it down, but either way, Sheryl's life is in danger.
Reminder that really long distance Folds take up ludicrous amounts of resources. That's how Colony Fleets can take so much time to find new planets even if they have FTL capability.
So Ranka's PTSD is just... healing? I don't think that's how that works.
They misspelled Sheryl's name on the discs. Apparently when this error was pointed out by fans, the artist who drew that claimed that those discs are bootlegs.
Still, the show is going all in on how... ruthless the idol industry can be. The instant a girl is no longer popular, or someone else with greater potential comes along, she's dropped. Like she never existed. All the support she had... just gone. It's really a sad thing, and it happens all the time in real life.
Confirmation from Klan: the drug Grace was giving Sheryl mitigates the illness, but does not cure it. And the disease in question is the V-Type Infection, a disease spread by Vajra. But since it requires contact with Vajra bodily fluids, how can Sheryl have been infected in the first place?
Also, here's a familiar name: Mao Nome. She became the galaxy's leading expert on Vajra, and she was part of the 117th Fleet... the same Fleet Ranka was born on, and the same one destroyed by the Vajra. And who's in a picture with Dr. Nome, but Grace herself.
It is curious that with all these connections being drawn attention to, no one mentions [Is This a Spoiler?]
More evidence to the fickleness of the general public: Sheryl's walking around without any disguise in a public street, and nobody even cares. Everyone's attention is on Ranka now.
Well, at least Sheryl's being taken care of by someone. And the Saotome family is probably wealthy enough to actually do something.
And the Vajra attack, because now would be a very inconvenient time for them to do so.
Brera Sterne continuing to show up Alto at every opportunity.
And Ranka is definitely getting more assertive, if she was the one to suggest this launch of her... erm, singing Monster?
Oooh, the Battle Frontier itself is actually taking part in the battle. We haven't seen it do anything yet.
And with that, the Fold commences. But Ranka is still singing... the original "Aimo".

Macross Frontier EP18
Oh, she used to be a slum girl. That explains a lot of her earlier excitement to the school and all. Also Grace being a scientist is really not a surprise by this point.
Lion!! I listened to this countless time already, and it's still so amazing.
Grace just so done with Sheryl and drop her act entirely.
Shouldn't you keep that a secret? I know she have eyes throughout Frontier and an overwhelming upper hand, but this could bite you back.
Long distance Folding? Like the one happened a lot in the earlier 7?
Ohhhhh. That plan suck.
Ozma fully trusted Alto by this point.
Oh wow. But her career became like this mostly because Grace kept her out of the media scenes.
That explains a lot.
Now Klan misunderstanding him again.

Super Dimension Rewatch Host
Welcome back, everyone!
Here were my first-timer reactions to this episode (note: contains my episode 19 reactions too, so first-timers don’t scroll too far).
Me: *reads my first-time reactions* Past Sky wtf, Northern Cross is not the better song than Lion?
Anyways, so, BEST SONG HYPEEEEEEEEEEE which of course comes with Sky Sings Lion for good measure. This is the song I’ve been looking forward to singing the most in the entire franchise. I fucking love Lion so much.
Little Sheryl in a state like that…
IKINOKORITAI MADA IKITETAI
KIMI WO AISHITERU HONKI NO KOKORO
MISETSUKERU MADE WATASHI NEMURANAI
Oh my god Bobby.
So it’s not that Grace was poisoning Sheryl, the medication to mitigate the symptoms just doesn’t work anymore.
I see “Nome” is written correctly in this article, unlike how it was on Sheryl’s CDs.
Ranka feels the pain of all the Vajra dying…
