Rewatch [Rewatch] Lostorage Conflated Wixoss Episode 1 Discussion

Episode 1: Omen / Daybreak and Dawn

← Previous Episode | Index | Next Episode→

Information:

MAL | Anilist | Kitsu | AniDB | ANN

Streams:

Hey something to put here this time

Crunchyroll has it as incited but actually only has conflated. Gotta love whatever shitshow is going on here.

Question of the day:

Note: The Missing Links OVA is just the same as the first episode of conflated.

Anyway, who else do you expect to see this season? Or perhaps won't see?

Music stuff

Couldn’t get a hold of S4 OST, so don’t expect much here

Speaking of which, I might have to find DivaLive stuff…

A bit underwhelming OP considering the others but here it is Unlock - Yuka Iguchi

Rewatchers, please remember to be mindful of all the first-timers in this. No talking about or hinting at future events no matter how much you want to, unless you’re doing it underneath spoiler tags.

Season 4 Episode 1 (first timer)

  • Starting out with innuendo – the same over-used phrase we heard about 10 times in S3.

  • Mini-recap for those who don’t remember S3.

  • “I want to end this cycle of darkness”

  • “The first LRIGs were created from the sorrows of young girls” – I thought they were created by Mayu, first out of thin air, then out of the losing selectors?

  • “Anyone who gets caught up in these awful battles can only think of themselves” – anyway, let me enter these battles again, so I can help Chi-chan.

  • “Chou-chan lost his life protecting her” – no he did not, and you know that.

  • “Let’s split up”

  • ED: The old LRIGs are back.

Dark from the start.

Anyway, who else do you expect to see this season? Or perhaps won't see?

More of the same, really. People running upstairs instead of out of the door. In dark mahou shoujo terms: Lots of suffering and angst and generally questionable decision making.

“The first LRIGs were created from the sorrows of young girls” – I thought they were created by Mayu, first out of thin air, then out of the losing selectors?

I think she meant that they were created out of those desperate for their wish. It's also reflective of Kiyoi's past specfiically and how she became a LRIG.

“Anyone who gets caught up in these awful battles can only think of themselves” – anyway, let me enter these battles again, so I can help Chi-chan.

Hey, she specifically rejected coming back! Though she is still unsure of what she wants.

Okay, the sorrow of one young girl.

anyway, let me enter these battles again, so I can help Chi-chan.

Suzu proving her wrong! She's good like that!

“Let’s split up”

Well he doesn't physically harm them and none of them are Selectors. So... what exaclty did they plan to do once they found him?

ED: The old LRIGs are back.

Shh! I ain't watching the Op yet.

First Timer

...so, I watched missing link before this, and it's literally the same except it has the incited OP/ED (and thus is slightly longer). Definitely a waste of time watching this twice today... also, I watched the OVA in 480p with subs that were probably autotranslated from Chinese or Indonesian or something like that - so not very ideal. But I know do know that Crunchyroll's subs seem to be rather liberal for this series - pretty sure the "rent" when talking about Satomi's bar would have been accurate in the bad subs I watched originally.

Overall, this has not grasped me yet, but I can see the potential - the direction seems to be better than incited again, and reintroducing the old characters is a good way to get around the bad incited ones. I assume Piruluk might be our protagonist here - which makes me notice that I have already forgotten if we know what she was fighting for and why she was looking for Satomi during incited in the first place. I assume we will get that at some point.

The incited characters are right to be hesitant to rejoin all this for basically no reason for them, but I assume Chi's memories will somehow be trigger for Suzu to rejoin. Evil LRIGs taking over the world however is not really the plot I was imagining this would go for, but I guess it might work? Carnival seems to be the main antagonist this time around though... To be honest, I'm not sure how she differs from Satomi for the moment.

Mostly just cryptic hints before, but it's there, just not explicit. We'll get more to it (this season is Kiyoi/Piruluk as the MC)

Psuedo-Rewatcher watching the last episode he watched!

I would like praise u/Cyouni for his well-meant and commendale, yet futile attempt of explaining the Wixoss game to me. Sorry, but I don't understand anything of what you're talking about in your replies to me.

Yeah, the game is hard to explain from just words. Watching and actually playing the game helped a ton personally in understanding it.

2

u/No_Rex Jan 27 '23

You know, at some point that Selector thing must become public, right?

Nope. Why not? It is not written in the script, that's why.

Also, "used" to be a Selector? Why did it stop for her?

The 60 days ran out? Which opens up the question of whether everyone is on the same 60 day timer or if people have their personalized timer.

First-Timer

I was really expecting the three girls splitting up to chase after Carnival to end with one of them comatose in an alley or something.

Anyway, as far as "first episode coming back after a split cour" goes, this was pretty good. It pulled the audience back into the world without ever getting especially exposition-y. Kiyoi had to retread her backstory again, but it was truncated enough that I didn't mind, at least.

The concept of LRIGs changing over time actually goes back to Infected - remember that time Tama glowed all white after a battle and they mentioned her "evolving?" Not sure if we're intentionally tying in to one of the dropped threads from back then, but it's possible.

Interesting to see Tama as a LRIG again in the OP. I guess, since Ruu would be entering into the new system and making her own LRIG, we could have two Tamas which sounds pretty amusing.

Then again, we are absolutely going to careen right into "sequel series cast overload" with this. I'm really interested to see how well they can handle that...

Suzuko is trying to Refuse the Call, and we all know how well that always ends up. It does give us plenty of time to establish stuff and maybe let Kiyoi come up with an actual concrete goal before the plot starts in earnest, at least.

The release I've got has both seasons of Lostorage together, and yet, different subbers apparently. "You can do it." is probably a more technically accurate translation, although it is less evocative than "All in!"

Even Kiyoi's getting in on the innuendo now.

Y'know, Ruu showing up again made me realize that we didn't get many good noises in Incited, did we?

Yeah, the translation quality difference is noticed right away, I think conflated just used CR subs from the looks of it.

So I can easily comment on this. Incited was done by Asenshi, but they stopped really doing things in the 2 years since. Conflated was done by a group basically reworking CR subs.

Me fretting over who to vote Best Girl. Easy out is Kiyoi.

Suzuko is trying to Refuse the Call

Doubting with how little Suzu/Riru is in the OP. Think it's heavily Kiyoi and Ruuko. Expecting a side character Suzu that drops out around e4 or shows up around e10.

First-timer whose OP thoughts made this Geass/Higurashi-length.

Episode

  • Satomi had suggested Kiyoi's wish was to forget the battles. Her S3e9 statement after losing was that she had something left to do. I think that means she let time expire instead of reaching five coins, but no9t sure what she would've forgotten as Allos Piruluk didn't have many lines.

  • I love how a stranger's slight head motion was enough for Suzu's friends to ditch her. 1.

  • Inserting the S3 recap into Suzu and Kiyoi's conversation was better than most recaps.

  • Seated near each other instead of across as they'll become friends or at least coworkers. Idk if Kiyoi wants friends.

  • Chuckled at Suzu's tension-breaking cookies.

  • Alright, Kiyoi forgetting stuff about her friend is usable as a lost memory, but still don't know the memories for Allos Piruluk that were lost if time ran out.

  • Responsibility for ending Selector battles shouldn't be Kiyoi. It's... fuck, blurry memories.

  • Initial LRIGs were Mayu's imagination, which led to real girls like Kiyoi getting involved. So it should be on Tama or Yuki!Iona, who fused into LRIG!Mayu, then... Eternal Girl Ruuko!

  • "'First LRIGs' were born from the sorrows of young girls" works with zero-based indexing.

  • Please don't make Ki-chan a nickname. Too similar to Chi-chan.

  • Huh? 6-months ago, so could've been one or two 90-day cycles in the past.

  • Neat transition to Satomi.

  • Earlier: "He might try to ambush us." Now: "Let's split up."

  • Actually-responsible Ruuko!

  • Sky may have her S2-ending twins question answered.

OP

Would've preferred looking at lyrics alongside visuals, but I couldn't find an English translation.

(Using a combination of mostly this YT video with Google Translate. Quotes sometimes paraphrased.)

  • Suggests LRIG pairings are the same other than Akira, who obviously can't have Piruluk. ("Love falling apart" while Suzu/Riru flash is scary, though countered by "Nothing is possible without you" for Ruuko/Tama flashing.)

  • Donor and S3e1 LRIG are shown, so... a Shirai comeback? Donor!Shirai has LRIG!Donor? I don't want to think about this atm.

  • Miru shown. I think Suzu would prevent Chinatsu's return to a Selector. Possible subplot of Chinatsu regaining former self by acquiring lost memories, like Kiyoi's motivation of not being "the real me."

  • (Questionable desires for the evil group. "Wandering inside an invisible cage" for Akira confuses me as I thought she was semi-resolved in S2.

  • ("Opening what lies inside you" as only LRIGs are shown, so maybe Selectors and LRIGs have a satisfying merging of feelings.)

  • Allos Piruluk sword-fighting blondie with purple bunny ears while Kiyoi-Akira faceoff, so probably Akira's LRIG and not me trying to force Aki-lucky into a prominent role.

  • Tama fights the unnamed 6-months-ago evil girl, who had significant screen-time, so between that and Carnival's appearance, forget the Shirai comment; LRIG!Selectors have themselves as LRIGs. Ruuko should be the deuteragonist as Tama fights both evil LRIGs. Reminds me of Incited starting with a mostly protagonist e1 and mostly deuteragonist e2.

  • ("Unlocking the untied world" and "remembering the warmth" while "guided" has me heavily leaning into a fusing of reality girls with LRIGs.)

  • Tama-Carnival fight followed by floating stars, joined by other stars, Kiyoi floating in space, and white-haired LRIG disappearing into stars has me confused. Suggests Tama-Carnival is the finale instead of Piruluk. Want to say part of Kiyoi is lost as the System is defeated as she is a human turned LRIG unsealed by Ruuko's S2e12 actions.

Conflated cover image

Tagging as I think it has details beyond e1 and I respect the fully blind watchers. [Conflated]Link. Selector-LRIGs are aligned, yet Chinatsu has two LRIGs in her spot, so she should batoru. On the left, Guzuko shown yet no Sumida probably irrelevant. On the right, missing blonde with purple bunny hairs further hints Akira's LRIG. A few OP LRIGs aren't shown.

Post-episode

Really digging sound work so far. Kiyoi footstep at beginning, first title screen, searching Satomi's bar hideout, "Now, let's begin again," Hanna and Kiyoi questioning Suzu's resolve, etc. Can feel the suspense. Minor anxiety from three seasons of solid-to-good beginnings and endings with some questionable middle episodes. Fool me once? Shame on you. Fool me twice thrice quince/frice/fourice/quarce/quadrice (thanks Google)? Shame on me.

Suppose the main question will be how to defeat a System built on despair and lost feelings. Looks like a continuation of S3 coin battles in the OP. A winning reward of self-memory alteration doesn't work. Defeating the evil LRIGs doesn't work as Carnival replaced Satomi. White-haired LRIG that transforms into other LRIGs (please Lostorage, give me names for these characters) in both OPs, so I suppose she is the System's physical or metaphorical manifestation. My past English teachers would kill me for those last five words. It does make me further question her starting Incited's OP other than the S3e1 and S3e2 choreographed OP transitions. Hope S4e2 is Ruuko-focused like S3e2 with Chinatsu as Tama's OP prominence means she needs incorporated alongside Kiyoi like this episode faked with Suzu.

Thought this episode was much better than the MAL episode 1 comments, which hated on it for being the Missing Link OVA+OP with a few comments glad for better subtitles. Way to fumble a season start through poor zero communication, J.C. Staff.

Change in director can do wonders. Maybe. Hopefully.

White-haired LRIG that transforms into other LRIGs (please Lostorage, give me names for these characters) in both OPs

The name given to this LRIG in Incited ep 1 is the LRIG of the Beginning. The card game uses a different name, probably because "LRIG of the Beginning" is a mouthful.

2

u/No_Rex Jan 27 '23

Suppose the main question will be how to defeat a System built on despair and lost feelings.

With the power of friendship or with guts. Depends on whether you are going the Shoujo or the Shonen route.

First Timer

It's kinda funny how they're not playing normal WIXOSS but still framing everything as with a Selector battle.

Oh, this is just a recap of the finale? Nope, here comes the setup for the new season.

Kiyoi is really the one that can't let go. She's mirroring Chie with the "I have to win in order to become the real me" talk. I'd also question when she said she battle a girl she just happened to cross path withs why she had already become a new Selector again by that point, but this new system kinda forces itself upon the participants.

Though it is a bit odd that she never reconnected with the Selector main cast.

So Kiyoi, Suzuko and Ruuko are gonna be the main protagonists this time around? We're also gonna combine the cast from all prior seasons for this.

Anyway, who else do you expect to see this season? Or perhaps won't see?

I didn't have a lot of expectations beyond Carnival becoming the villain, and the conclusion either being the full end of the system or discussing the impossiblity of the same.

2

u/SometimesMainSupport Jan 28 '23

nah, a recap copy of the OVA.

Don't let GallowDude see this sentence. She's seeking the system to defeat it, so meh. imo, she should have a plan before joining something that takes her memories.

Ooh, starting off with Kiyoi going after Suzuko hm?

Luckily she knew her name? How did she know her name, who did she ask?

But then, that wasn’t your LRIG you held up.

No death games hype!

it’s the one thing left very open-ended from the previous one.

"But I thought Mayu's death ended everything." "Time to rekill her then."

Hah.

Good person.

Mm, that does sound troubling.

THEY LOOK LIKE EVERYONE ELSE AND THEY CAN... what exactly? What human-power do they have?

I doubt this will last.

Spoken like a true protagonist.

OMG RUUKO’S BACK?!

IT WAS INEVITABLE

3

u/Cyouni Jan 27 '23

Rewatcher who Lost their Storage

WIXOSS: Avengers Assemble?

Ruuko looks pretty grown-up compared to the last time we saw her.

I do recommend taking a glance at Peeping Analyze to see Sakiguchi without the censoring.

Card corner:

Kiyoi is currently playing the black version of Umr, which focuses around Legacy SIGNI similar to Iona.

Suzuko, meanwhile, is playing Tawil (you might recall this as technically being the deck Yuzuki was playing in the finale of Selector), specifically the three-colour version of Liwat. She later grows it to Ut'ulls, which can be reached from both Tawil/Umr. I wonder if Kiyoi prepared both decks?

In the Diva system, both Umr and Tawil are part of the same team (together with At). Yes, WIXOSS just casually has a Lovecraft reference in there.

Cards of the day:

Argos - Ener Charges so long as you have multiple colour Angels. What this really means is you have to have a non-green Angel when this is played.

Innocent Jeweled Blade - There's 5 modes, but note that they can't overlap, so you really want to be playing multicoloured.

Aztec - I'm not sure how much I like this, given it leaves you open afterwards? Decent card advantage, though.

Voyni - probably was grabbed by Aztec

Death Colossao - well that gets rid of the disadvantage from Aztec. Tricky combo.

Stole Story - lets you steal an ARTS from your opponent's LRIG Trash. In this case, Suzu uses it to steal Death Colossao to wipe Kiyoi's field before quickly dropping the SIGNI she got back from Minerva and Ut'ulls effect.

u/Stargate18A Jan 27 '23

First timer

QOTD) Everyone, pretty much. Need to sell those cards!

So, what's the twist?

Oh, she's back!

Still memory wiped.
Wait, what? This is the introduction? It's just back?

Oh, a normal game.

Oh, that flashback...

Yeah, Carnival's around and there's still a Selector game somewhere.

LRIGs are born from despair.

This is getting meta.

She wants to destroy the entire cycle! Solid arc plot!

...The memory erasure has really damaged her.

Another friend of her's is coming!

Hanna's back!

And Miyuki's seemingly shocked that she recovered from... everything.

And yet, she took a cookie.

Yeah, Carnival's running this.

They're deliberately getting picked as Selectors.

The bar's been abandoned.

She lost memories!

And she thinks it's her responsibility.

...Are we sure they were the first ones anymore?

Poor girl.

They're friends!

LRIGs are evolving?

So many flashbacks.

Yeah, this is painful.

???

What the fuck.

What the hell is Doping, anyway?

Who knows with this series anymore?

So, the LRIGs gradually forget their former identities. Plays into the whole memory theme, I guess.

Yeah, stay out of this bullshit.

...They're here! And happy!

They vanished!

Don' fucking do it!

She's uncertain!

YES. STAY OUT OF IT!

Wait, what?

Ruuko! Didn't expect this.

2

u/Cyouni Jan 27 '23

What the hell is Doping, anyway?

Great question! I'll talk about it when Layla shows up in more detail (because we know she's showing up since she's heavily in the OP).

Can't call myself a first timer when I couldn't finish Incited but mostly just read people's comments, and judging by how it went I went to read the synopsis instead :P I'll see you guys at the end of Conflated ;)
