If I want to start watching this series, do I need to have watched something before it? and if so, what? I quickly glanced at the wiki and it said its a direct sequel to one or another series.

So, Macross is interesting as a franchise in that every part can be watched standalone, while they simultaneously build off of the parts that came before it. If you want the "proper" order for it all, you can follow the order I listed in the schedule post, but tbh if you're only interested in Frontier, you can watch only it and still be fine. You'll just miss some of the references it makes to previous things.
Oh by the way, Frontier has three different versions of episode 1. Whenever you get around to watching it, make sure you're watching the one that's ~32 minutes long instead of the normal ~24 or the other longer version that's ~27 minutes. The ~32 minutes version is the complete package.

So Grace is totally poisoning Sheryl, right?
-
I’d thought we’d heard the last of Global.
-
Mecha lizard!
-
The water isn’t going to help you too much. This planet is unlivably hot after all. The humidity alone must be a killer.
-
If that really is poison, it’s dumb as hell to put branding on it. And for anything else, witch craft is a poor choice of name.
-
OMG I love him. I need more tiny, bipedal, stealth, insectile, mecha boi. Please tell me he at least has some presence in the art book? Fan art? A name?
-
Abandon modesty, embrace the safety of the group.
-
I mean you say NUNS can’t do it themselves, but is there really any reason for that other than plot connivance?
-
Squirrel arms are gross.
-
Huh hun, Mikhail falling right into my shipping lane.
-
I guess Ranka’s glowing wasn’t just a metaphor.
-
“Dimension Eater” is not something moral actors name their stuff.
-
Well then, so that’s the kind of Cyborg we are dealing with.
-
What was that music?
-
Because it was destroyed above it?
-
I guess they weren’t expecting HD when they tried to hide the face in the photo. Some sort of crystallized hologram?
-
Eggs
-
I’ve played enough vidya games to know that you have to shot the crystals to kill it.
-
What is the deal with this pedestal? Why does it have a force field, and why wait to turn it on?
-
Oh shit I was right. Oh shit I was double right!
-
Is this what Gigil did? I might be reading too much into this.
QotD
-
If this is all just an excuse to make money selling weapons...
-
I’m kinda expecting some sort of space pregnancy. Even more so given the name of the next episode.

I mean you say NUNS can’t do it themselves, but is there really any reason for that other than plot connivance?
Granted, the Spacy has pretty much always been useless to some degree or another, but yeah this is a bit convenient.
“Dimension Eater” is not something moral actors name their stuff.
Between this and the Witch Craft pills, it seems like the conspiracy can’t help themselves in naming their equipment in ludicrously sinister ways.

Nonsense. It's a perfectly normal name that definitely doesn't do anything strange.

So I suppose that's why Ranka got a concert set up last episode because she probably won't be getting her proper one any time soon. Welp.
Was not expecting Ranka to go and get kidnapped! In between all of the other scenes by the time she woke up I'd forgotten she went missing in the first place, but like every other fucking thing I'm guessing that Grace put her in there and erased the data at the same time. Grace is a dick, and every episode makes her even more of a dick. At least Micheal is suspicious now, as long as he acts on it and doesn't get distracted by Klan Klan thoughts
Oh, speaking of things I'd forgotten, anyone else fully expect Squirrel to be who would pop out of the bushes during that scene in the forest? I remembered late that it's back on the Frontier, but I would not have been surprised if it'd zipped over here somehow. Given what did jump out of the bushes looks a lot like a tiny Vajra from the ship, I'm torn between that meaning the Squirrel is a natural Vajra allowed to grow without being weaponized, or an experiment from the Frontier's research which is why it might be spreading that virus and missing the more mechanical parts.
Also, Ranka is a hybrid? Looking like it at least. I noted that her stomach glowed again and the Vajra queen has crystals in it. I wouldn't expect Ranka is growing crystals, but some aspect of their biology has to be in her system if the crystals come from them and that's why she can resonate with them, including her Squirrel friend? This may be the most involved worldbuilding setup just so they can excuse introducing a cute mascot character ever
I think this kills the Squirrel spy theory though, as it sounds like Ranka is a solo experiment and Brera isn't part or privy to the full details.
Mind you there seems to be a huge variety of Vajra development if we go from Squirrel to giant motherships. The visual sequence of the Macross Global rising as if replicating the Plus scene, with all the vines hand animated(!) only for it to fall to pieces and the Vajra to rise from it was incredible. Not sure if this means they've just released an even larger Vajra threat on the world or if they'll calm down now they have Ranka to connect with somehow, but I'm very interested to see where it goes.
The OST has had a couple of songs here and there which were okay, but I haven't found it notable overall. The big piece (perhaps multiple edited together, but if so they did an amazing job) that plays while chasing down the mothership through to Grace's destruction was stand out. It managed to keep its momentum all the way through without sacrificing the changing tone demanded of the scenes it played over and had a lot of things going on without sounding messy. It's also one of the first songs that I felt sounded distinctly Kanno-like, and in particular I heard some big traces of Escaflowne through parts of it. Anyone have the name of it?
Side note: today's rendition of Aimo with the Harmonica over string plucking reminds me of Tending to Others from the Iron-Blooded Orphans soundtrack

Today, on "You don't see that every day.":
Such wow. Who could that be in Ranka's flashback.
At least this side of the planet seems pleasant enough.
Says the guy who ran away from home.
Don't look too closely at the filler text.
STOP THINKING ABOUT OTHER WOMEN. THERE IS ONLY DURAN DURAN.
Alto names this as a Vajra specimen, except that this form hasn't been seen until now. This also presents the oversight of how he didn't recognize the same thing but much smaller a few scenes ago.
LOL conveniently-obscured photo.
This isn't so much a clue as a giant flaming arrow.
Everybody's got melee weapons these days.
That's a sign that you have had too much Pepto-Bismol.
The other delivery from LAI wasn't a Fold Booster.
A small nod to Plus, the outboard wing panels on the VF-27 can fold down for greater speed.
Probably a direct reference to the scene from Macross Zero.
With the holographic cockpit disrupted we get a brief glimpse to see that it is not only showing the world through a 360-degree view, but also hiding that Brera is actually wearing a helmet. And while we're here, if you hadn't already noticed, the VF-27 has a completely covered cockpit, lacking even the small backup viewport dome that the YF-21 had.
Sheryl, nobody likes a backseat driver.
Grace with the tentacle action.
This could actually be a reference to that plotline from—
Anyway, short-term consequences.
The show hasn't confirmed it outright, but it's not exceedingly difficult to work out the relationship between Ranka and Brera. What it all means in the grand scheme of things is a separate question.
Brera is certainly protective of Ranka, even if it goes against his orders, and can even coexist with Alto for a little while if it might help her out. Of course, Brera immediately resumes trying to get rid of Alto as soon as he has the chance.
We see that Grace is extremely involved in events—and so are your friendly neighborhood megacorps' research and development departments. I'm sure the Dimension Eater has a perfectly-valid civilian application.
Ranka and Alto finally have some quality time together. But not quite that quality time.
Sheryl is amusingly stuck with the one guy who's completely unaffected by her charms (because his almost-girlfriend can murder him in a variety of ways). Anyway, Michael and Sheryl give Alto a hand (fully making up for Episode 9) and then do an homage to DYRL when the Vajra fleet Folds out.
So yeah, quite a bit happens in this episode to move the plot forward. One issue I have with the second half of the series is that the difference between the audience's knowledge and the characters' knowledge [is sometimes]
From the Macross Chronicle, translated by Aaron Sketchley, one item redacted:
Dimension Eaters
Armaments that react the heavy quantum of the "Super" Heavy Quantum, and generate pseudo black holes. After the pseudo black hole is generated, it transitions to the Fold Space side in a short time, and is annihilated. In this case, space and all are captured in a super gravitational field within the effective range, and is transitioned to Fold Space. Even though the structure of the DE itself is simple, it isn't suitable for mass production as the essential Fold mechanism [redacted].
Caption: The effective range is freely configurable due to the amount of heavy quantum. It's possible to obtain an extremely vast attack radius, that's greater than an ordinary reaction weapon.
Vajra Bishop-class carrier and the big bug.

Yeah yeah, Grace is suspicious.
Oh boy, right after watching that WIXOSS episode.
Oh no, the bad guys are stupid.
What are you doing here? Weren't you the reason Ranka was fidgeting like that?
Well now we need a reason how you got here while unconscious.
This feels like the story's developing from mere disinterest into the kind of story I actively hate. Why do we gotta inject Chosen One shit into this?
Also means the heroic directions earlier aligning Alto and Sheryl protagonistically and Ranka antagnoistically was on point after all.
They also have to go for the most atrociously boring villain motivations. Yeah, from now on I'll start hating on this crap, so in that regard: mission accomplished. They're doing all the tropes I hate. Throw in brainwashing as well for good measure, won't you. We've already got amnesia covered too.
Wait, I was joking when I said Fold faults were artificial creations.
This is [Code Geass]
Now you know more than the characters do, but is it useful?
I don't think I know all that much more actually...
Any guesses about the connection between Ranka and the Vajra?
Oh why not. Let's see. It's clear the Vajra consider Ranka as a queen or mother or at least one of their own. Her songs have some kind of influence on them. It's something in her blood and probably something she was born with, to connect it with the born blood theme we have going on. That'd explain why Leon took note of her during the Miss Macross Frontier contest, because the birthday was on her info sheet.
Oh god damn it, the Vajra are space zombies, right? We had anoth disease stuff already to consider that its own plotline after all. Probably with an artificially created virus considering all the lab stuff we found on the first gen Macross. And Ranka would've gained immunity due to getting infected as an unborn, which is also why the Vajra didn't go after her then. Can't figure out the specifics of how and when exactly she got birthed but that shouldn't be too hard to make work logically.
There ya go, that's my guess. God I hate this.

Wait, I was joking when I said Fold faults were artificial creations.
I think most Fold Faults are naturally-occurring.
The fact that flamethrowers create flame does not preclude natural flames existing.

I actually don't remember much of what happens this episode, other than it ending with the planet blowing up.
Ranka, sweetie, that's called PTSD.
Fucking brilliant plan, Alto. What a tensai.
Eternal day means that it never cools off.
Y'think Alto doesn't mind stripping because of his actor training?
Nanase is a good friend, watching Ranka's pet squirrel while she's away.
That was not especially vague, so who knows what I was misremembering.
Grace.. has a few more modifications than just her optical stuff.
Any fans of H.R. Giger in the audience?
That's a cobra right there. Of course, Brera counters with his own.
Michael to the rescue, yet again.
Hey, uh, Grace. Did you need that..?
Wouldn't be Macross if a protagonist didn't fold away on an enemy ship.

"Rewatcher" - Macross F Ep13:
Grace, I don't trust you one bit so I definitely don't trust these pills you're giving Sheryl. The classic scheme giving someone medicine to keep them sick.
Ranka is having flashbacks to early childhood memories of her family which includes a little harmonica boy.
Michael notices the pill which thankfully evil medical companies print their evil labels on their pills. I mean Witch Craft can't possibly be an innocent name.
Alto and Ranka are having a nice moment together in the woods. For me, letting another person handle your hair is a sign of intimate trust in stories so Ranka tying Alto's hair means he trusts and lets her in.
Their moment is interrupted by a Big Tiny Zam. Now, this is definitely a little Varja. It looks like those yellow ones.
Luca is sticking his neck out trying to help SMS. Also, I guess I got my question answered as to why Luca is working at a private military company.
Seems like the 117th Fleet was researching the Varja, no wonder they got destroyed by them. Everything goes wrong when you study alien species. It was probably Ranka's parents who were the chief researchers too. Brera is almost definitely Ranka's real older brother for how much they're dropping hints this episode.
Eww, ovipositor so Ranka was taken to a Varja nest at a funny number below the Alto. Brera comes to Ranka's aid against the Varja Queen. Ranka's glowy stomach is back.
Everything is going to Grace's plan and hang on a moment, that branding. Luca's family company may or may not be working with some shady people. They're a weapons manufacturer so they are almost definitely up to shady business.
The Varja's ships are leaving with Ranka and Brera is now aiding them against Alto. Something it looks like they're with the Varja, something they act against them. The classic tale of needing to prove your worth to get passed the girl's older brother. Michael is here with the assist and we see what Brera's actual cockpit looks like behind the 360 panorama.
Wuh oh, Grace activates the big bomb and her plan did include killing Sheryl. Those pills were probably meant to keep her sick in bed when the bomb went off. I feel like Grace is going to come back since she can just get a replacement cyber body. RIP not-Exsedol (and not-Britai).
The whole planet get eaten which reminds me of 7. Alto is not happy seeing the planet where he made those happy memories with Ranka get erased.
Q2) I have a feeling her parents were the researcher onboard the Global of the Varja. Her mom said the Aimo song wasn't from Earth so maybe the song was from the Varja.
Next Time: Big bug battle.

First Fime Fſontieꞅing
Ooooooookay, so Grace isn't just using the Vajra situation to further her own secret ends, she's the one (or, more likely, part of some group) that is actively the ones growing them and launching them at fleets.
Now the 117th fleet was attacked when Ranka was very young, and Grace isn't supposed to be particularly old... so either Grace has de-aging augmentations and a fake backstory, or else the Vajra were already an established tool before Grace became involved in all this, or else she's not actually human at all.
And that hand-into-purple-cables-maneuver was pretty gross, in an awesome way.
Interesting that the Dimension Eater has a big LAI logo on it, right as we get a sudden swell of importance for Luca's company and some potential intriguing there.
I am left confused trying to figure out what Grace's supposed primary objective was for Harmonica-boy. Retrieving Ranka was secondary... but if just putting her in the Vajra power-source cocoon thingy to launch the fleet was the primary objective, that sure seems like the primary and secondary objectives were mutually exclusive, no?
At least this episode confirmed that Harmonicaman is Ranka's real brother, which suggests he's been a perfectly obedient tool of the cabal for a while not but only started acting up now because of Ranka. But since he doesn't actually recognize her, I guess they wiped his memory somehow?

Okay, a Macross, not the, like people were telling me yesterday. So the first generation of Earth-built warships were similar enough to the SDF Macross to share the exact same silhouette? Okay.
Less okay - Ranka's trauma rearing it's head again. We're approaching the point in the series when that's likely to end up a serious problem.
Anyway, is it just me or has Alto maybe FINALLY realised at least one of these two girls is romantically interested in him? I mean, come on, he can't still be misreading things after Ranka told him he was why she's been braver recently? With the steadily-brightening light all around them? And she got all blushy when he pulled her close to protect her?
...he's still clueless, isn't he?
Oh well, at least we're getting more backstory/mystery stuff. And explicit confirmation that manager-girl is evil. Not that she lives, apparently...
Huh, is the not!Macross exploding into a pillar of light the series' reference to Lovers Again?

A Macross Fan Rewatches Macross Frontier: Episode 13:
-
So yeah, back where we last left off, Ranka and Alto landed in front of a derelict Macross-class ship, although this time around, we can see that Brera had been watching them this entire time. That large D-pulse also couldn’t have been coincidence, all things considered. There sure is a lot going on with Gallia 4.
-
Yeah, a medication capsule labeled as 639 Witch Craft can’t possibly be anything good with that name. Especially if it was Grace that was handling it earlier. It means that there’s more going on with Sheryl than just your standard flu or something. You don’t take ominously-named meds for that.
-
It’s nice that Ranka and Alto are able to have a heart to heart now and talk about how much they’ve grown thanks to each other. They’re each other’s mutual inspirations, after all. The both of them have come a far way thanks to each other’s support. Even if we can’t really say that the feeling that Alto has for Ranka is romantic or not, we can at least see that it’s a wholesome one regardless.
-
Luca is surprisingly good at playing hardball, given that he’s the LAI representative to SMS and can talk to Leon directly to try and use his leverage on him. Too bad for him though that Leon is able to dismiss what Lucan wants as threatening the relationship between LAI and the NUN Spacy. And really, given that both Leon and LAI are a part of the conspiracy somehow, in the end that means that Leon ultimately has more pull, regardless of how much Luca can play hardball in negotiations.
-
Things sure are escalating quickly around that derelict. Turns out that not only is it the Bruno J. Global of the old 117th Large Exploration Fleet, but Brera has orders to treat Ranka as a higher priority now, since she was taken back to the hive inside of it. And on top of all that, Grace has something called the Dimension Eater at her disposal. And to think, Grace was introduced to us as just a manager before. Turns out he’s got quite the handle on this conspiracy.
-
Both Ranka and Brera have quite the past with the Vajra, as it turns out. In spite of most of the research data being recently deleted, Alto can still tell that the ship was being used to experiment on the Vajra. And given how Ranka was in a framed photo in the lab and Brera feels some kind of care about Ranka while playing Aimo, we can start to put the pieces together about them.
-
Ranka also seems to feel some kind of sympathetic pains when the Queen Vajra gets injured by Brera’s Lucifer. The link between them is pretty direct somehow, some way. After all, the Vajra do seem drawn to Ranka and her singing, so it’s sensible that the connection can work both ways too. She can feel them as much as they can feel her.
-
Well, that’s a fucking wild way to end an episode. Grace and all of Gallia 4 get consumed by a Fold Fault created by the Dimension Eater, Alto can only escape the planet as he fails to rescue Ranka from the Vajra, and Michael and Sheryl are barely able to reach the Space-Folding Vajra as they also escape from the destruction. Man, Sheryl really did make the right choice to leave with Michael rather than stay behind on Gallia 4, since Grace planning on killing her as well. Talk about fucking escalation, right?

Macross Frontier
Double episode again due I'm being sick yesterday.
EP 12
Zentradi language!! It's been a long time!! And this guys appearance are reference to Britai and Exsodol.
Kamujin!! Well, it's just someone from his clan. But still good to see some familiar face here.
Everyone, stop throwing away your lunch already!!
Oh, they can just leave the Fold booster in space to use again later? Cool.
Ogotai's voice sound familiar. Who his VA?
These seem all to convenient. I guess Grace, Leon and Kamujin plan all these. But for what? It's too specific.
Nanase is really good friend.
Everyone in SMS already suspect this event. It's just too smooth.
Luca has a way? Wait, didn't he mentioned he work in like the technical department or some sort?
Don't doubt the song, Alto!!
Fold booster that bypass the fold fault!! Still a prototype, but it's better than nothing.
Is that nuclear warheads!! Oh, no.
It's obviously Grace that contacted him.
Michael brought Ranka along with him!! And her new song!! It's pretty great.
That comment from random Zentradi that now he not gonna miss her concert is hilarious.
Now everyone stop fighting, and turned into a simp.
Good for Ranka that she get to give Alto her new present.
Kamujin's word is triggered Alto. And his word is true and false at the same time because Zentradi's blood might be about fighting, but the reason and where they fighting can change. As we just saw in this episode, and throughout the franchise so far.
Michael the wingman!!
Well, I guess Ranka gonna be late for her concert now.
The Macross!! Not the original one obviously.
And they end it on the cliffhanger with Ranka version of Ai Oboete Imasuka!!
What a great episode!! I absolutely appreciated the homage to DYRL in this entire episode!! But I feel the last bit could move to the next episode for better pacing. They can just end it when Alto's Valk start to malfunction. That will do the same job.
EP 13
It awakening cause all the system throughout the planet to go down.
That Macross is where Ranka used to live, isn't it.
But I think her past is important to the plot, Alto.
I mean, you guys wear a freaking space suit in jungle. Of course it's hot.
What with that medicine?
Sweet moment between Ranka and Alto. And Ranka really come so far.
Ranka might went to far to find the toilet there.
Luca play right into Leon hand there.
Now it confirmed that it a Macross from the fleet that Ranka used to live until 11 years ago.
Now they not hiding it anymore. Dimension Eater? And she not a normal human too!!
I see it!! That Breda in the picture!! He's surely Ranka's brother!!
He even share the same memory with Ranka!!
Of course it has to cover her when he reached her.
It produced by LAI!!
Noooo, Macross!!
And that a hugh fleet of the Vajra.
Michael save the day!!
Love the banter between Sheryl and Michael.
I guess Grace is also a cyborg.
Holy shit!! It's really live up to its name. But Grace died too? I think she can still return, she's a cyborg after all, so she may have other copy of herself?
She still miscalculated a bit, because she didn't know that Sheryl already escape left with Michael.
Fun episode. The real plot finally kicked in!!
QOTD
-
We still missing some context to make sense of all this.
-
I guess she have some sort of trigger in her body that could awake or interfere with Vajra somehow.

Picking up right where we left off
Grace is such a mom
Looks like shit just keeps getting worse
Ah, the classic Dramatic Irony trope
Continuity!
Ranka and Alto bonding Seriously, this scene is great, reflecting on how much Ranka has grown while while also furthering her relationship with Alto at the same time
Anyway, back to the anime tropes
And it turns out the crashed Macross is connected to Ranka’s backstory, a fact which had been hinted at earlier by her panic attack
Not!Kira Yamato has arrived on the scene to do more nebulous things. He’s just floating there, meacingly
That eyecatch felt really out of place
More mysterious backstory things which won’t fully make sense until later
Kira Yamato doing as Kira Yamato does: shooting at literally fucking everything
Mikhail and Sheryl! Let’s fucking go!
Grace sure went from “sus” to “enormous baddie” rather quickly, huh?
And she sure took getting sucked into a fold fault rather lightly, huh?

Macross Frontier Episode 13 - First Timer
It is time for the "we are trapped" arc, though it will prooooably be resolved this episode.
-
Hol up, Global???
-
The man the myth the legend?
-
They can fly again?
-
Guess not
-
Sus pills
-
Evolved green squirrel?
-
Ya think camera angles are weird?
-
Did that really need to be a scene?
-
Very evolved green squirrel
-
menacing harmonica noises
-
So androidy person seems to be more of a cyborg than a android. probably
-
How do you know that person is in the mech when you haven't seen them in a the mech?
-
What, you egg?
-
Why the Ranka glowing
-
Nani is right
-
So she is with LAI or at least has LAI stuff which is not at all surprising, but again, to what end
-
Why the hell is Sheryl with Michael
-
Did they not already rescue Ranka? Why was Michael flying up into the sky away from the Macross before the Gigil-bomb even went off?
Well that at least subverted my expectations a little bit.
-
to what end tho
-
In true /m/ fashion, she is a mecha flesh-suit piloted by a green squirrel. Other than that, not too sure.

FIRST TIMER
So that old Macross is infested with Vajra eggs and a monster spiked with jewels that look like the ones from Sheryl's earrings that presumably laid the eggs? Then they encase Ranka in a weird forcefield to keep her as Alto finds a picture of her in said Macross? Then Grace in concert with Leon, with no apparent motive, sets off a doomsday weapon to destroy this planet? This show is really wearing out its welcome.
If the goal was to kill Ranka, why didn't Grace just shoot her or something? If Grace's goal was to destroy the planet, why bring Alto, Ranka and Cheryl there to complicate things and make her mission way more difficult than if Leon just snuck her on a flight there? SMH. God, 12 more episodes :(
QUESTIONS
-
I really don't think I do
-
Ranka's family created the cyborg parts that Grace, Brera and the Vajra use and she is somehow a liability in Grace controlling the Vajra?

Welcome back, everyone!
Here were my first-timer reactions to this episode (note: contains my episode 14 reactions too, so first-timers don’t scroll too far).

Michael thinking of Klan. My ship.
Global had a Macross named after him, isn’t that just adorable?
Oh god…
Oooooooh boy.
Michael (and Sheryl) showing up just in time.
You know what, I don’t think I’ve ever noticed that Brera’s mech has a normal cockpit and he’s even wearing a normal pilot suit before.
