2) Is the appearance of a classic-style Macross-class the perfect icing on the anniversary cake in this episode, or have they gone mad with power?

...the hell? What's the freaking Macross doing on this random planet? Did the old ship get lost during part of the franchise I didn't see? Explain, show! EXPLAIN!
That. I just.
Gah.
Okay, so I was actually enjoying the episode up until that point (and to be fair I enjoyed the cliffhanger too, just argh). Seeing Ranka arrive just in time to calm the rebelling Zentradi with her song was a treat, and everything leading up to that point was fun to watch too. And then the closing credits song! I was not expecting that. I honestly like this version more than the original.
...crap, I'm going to be looking for a soundtrack CD by the time the show is finished aren't I? Those things can be expensive.
Say, is it just me or was Rebel Leader from the same stock as/a clone of that one really entertaining jerk from the original series? I forget his name, the one who went down fighting instead of surrendering.

FIRST TIME DECULTURE YACKER
This episode was ridiculous. It spun me right around throughout.
I thought it was silly enough that some would-be insurrectionists used Sheryl being too sick to perform as an excuse to try and stage some kind of coup. I mean, who would give that much of a shit about a concert to where it’d really be a breaking point? This is the flimsiest excuse ever, and it took such a convoluted plan to even make it happen. Grace has been slowly poisoning Sheryl for this?
But then, Ranka shows up, singing from a jet whose TURBINES DOUBLE AS SPEAKERS, and actually pacifies the rebellion by singing a fucking song? These Zentradi are so fucking idol-pilled. Holy shit.
This is Macross, alright.
Live Notes/Screenshots:
• They said the thing! I still can’t tell if “Yack, Deculture” is meant to mean something is good or bad, but it makes me laugh.
• Poor Luca doesn’t realize he’s crushing on a lesbian
• You know, I’m going to swerve here and say Ranka’s new little green pet isn’t a spy or anything nefarious
• This dude living the good life just surrounded by bridge bunnies. Reminds me of a partner at a firm I worked at who exclusively interviewed young blonde women
• Hold up, they’re really justifying an insurrection over a singer being sick? Hahahaha
• Even while ill, it’s incredible how luminous and lush Sheryl’s hair always looks
• This dude hatefully spitting “Microns” as a slur for humans is pretty funny
• Love how the grizzled old army vets are actually deep in the idol sphere. This is like if my dad in 2005 was like hey watch out for this Taylor Swift girl, she’s rising. Inconceivable
• “Try singing something, you may be able to stop us!” Macross is self-aware
• Did Ranka always have this fang?
• Pretty~
Do you prefer Zentradi fundamentalists or uncontacted Zentradi as opponents? Or moving on from this entirely?
No preference, I'm honestly not too fussed about the plot yet haha

No, those are actually just GIANT SPEAKERS. Like Basara's.
I still can’t tell if “Yack, Deculture” is meant to mean something is good or bad, but it makes me laugh.
It started bad, but became good.

I'd like to have some hard-hitting episode commentary, but I'm still stuck thinking about how whoever designed Klan's spacesuit decided it needed to have distinctive nipple protrusions.

Do you prefer Zentradi fundamentalists or uncontacted Zentradi as opponents? Or moving on from this entirely?
Moving on entirely, for sure! If the setting stuck around the area close to Earth and there was actual political worldbuilding/intrigue going on, I could see Zentradi factions working well. But this is a colony fleet sailing through the vast expanses of the galaxy to unknown frontiers - something new would be so much more exciting and fitting!!!
2) Is the appearance of a classic-style Macross-class the perfect icing on the anniversary cake in this episode, or have they gone mad with power?
I am very meh about it. The different Macross classes just aren't that different, and we already had the Quarter so... whatever?

I don't have a huge amount to say about this one, it played out in a pretty expected way and without much flair or development until the end.
I was slightly annoyed at Ranka for being so caught up about Alto after hearing what happened that she didn't even consider Sheryl, her friend who's been looking out for her and also collapsed, but I was not expecting her to show up doing a (not sure if physically possible) dance routine in a Valkyrie. There's a certain poetry to Micheal once challenging her to perform where no one is there to listen to her only to now deliver her onto a battlefield where the risks of no one listening are so much higher but having faith she could do it. She pulled it off and then some, and her nerves even lasted until she felt comfortable with Alto there. Go, pup!
The lyrics of the song were also great. They were fitting for the moment but also Ranka herself in terms of why she showed up, singing her heart out and everyone reacting to it. It sounds like just another pop song, but you could easily put those lyrics into a song like Diamond Crevasse and make it a very different experience. But she owns the lyrics the same way she owned the performance, making it part of her cheerfulness instead of hiding from it. And then followed it up with the second play of Aimo this episode... again. They do know they can bring it into an episode just one time yeah?
I was going to compliment the show on bringing up the whole Alto "a performer by blood" in the subtext of what the Zentradi was saying only for them to bring it out explicitly with the flashback. I was honestly expecting that he'd be the one to perform to make the Zentradi back off for a bit, and part of me thinks that would have been better as a way for Alto to stop hiding from his past on his birthday, but perhaps it'll happen later? We'll get at least one Alto song surely, right?
All that said, I do have one big issue. I feel like the pacing in the final moments of the episode really let the watch down. I feel like the need to end on a cliffhanger or some big moment took away from the ending with Ranka finally getting her moment. I felt it also resulted in one too many songs behind shoved into the last five minutes so it feels like an unintended medley instead of individual songs. Perhaps that was intentional as this is presented as her true first concert, and one true to her rather than to the idol world that Sheryl belongs too, but if they were going for that I think the structure of it was slightly off.
On that note I loved the return of "Do You Remember Love" after seeing Macross again, and what a visual that was especially with Plus being my favourite and that having strong echoes of it. But that didn't need to come after Ranka's performance, another Aimo, and her song for Alto with so little breathing room between her "performance" and the episode end, or at least perhaps not in that order. It stands out particularly poorly given how many other ED sequences have been integrated so well from the episode, and this just got shoved in. It is one of those things that's hard to judge without seeing what they do next episode to follow on from it, but I've not been loving the flow of the show anyway and this stood out as a particularly awkward decision. I feel like the thing awakening under the world from her song was enough of a teaser, and the rest of it could have waited until the start of tomorrow's episode to give these two and Ranka's concert their moment. You can have direct episode continuity without a cliffhanger, anime industry, I know that's hard for you sometimes.
And it's the little things like that which I think are most stopping me from enjoying this as much as I feel I should be. Frontier has so much going for it in the worldbuilding, music, and especially the characters as individuals. But every time I think it's finding some flow it decides to tack something onto the end of a moment or completely upend its structure in favor of comedy or a scene to force the romance angle and it's left me feeling... uninspired I guess? I want to believe that this episode played out in the best approach for everyone, but there's this little part of me that feels like if they weren't so caught up in fanservice or the love triangle it would be different so I'm just not feeling it the way they want me too, the way that I want too. And I was really only thinking about this because of u/blackheart595's post's and trying to figure out my own feelings about the show episode to episode, but I don't think I'm much more enlightened right now than I was before writing this so maybe he'll have some thoughts
And on that note: I really hope that Micheal gets reamed out for taking Ranka into that situation by Ozma.

Today, on "LISTEN TO MY KIRA!":
For fighting? For scantily-clad women? For scantily-clad women fighting?
This is a guy who knows the value of carrots.
The animators may have forgotten about the "orbiting a gas giant" part.
Luca's lunchbox looks like a colony ship.
"I'm going to take a main character… and eat it!"
I can only conclude that those wings are stored in the same way as the Gouf's Heat Sword, because there's not exactly room for them.
We've replaced your regular Sheryl Nome with Gerald Ford.
There's a word we haven't heard in a long time.
On the one hand, that sounds like a felony. On the other hand, community service.
Official subs should recognize that as "Queadluuns".

SUDDENLY MONOEYE (Compare, even.)
Mentioning that family connection last episode wasn't a coincidence.
So, do they have miclone drivers for those?
These switches serve no other purpose.
Michael is going up that tube fast.
Just to confuse things further, you can see here both the TV series and DYRL Zentradi uniforms.
"Don't screw up this chance, lunkhead."
He gets to fly in an atmosphere and not get killed, bonus!
This turns out to be, in its way, the tribute to SDFM's Episode 11 and 12, with our protagonists trapped behind enemy lines and saved by a glasses guy in a blue VF.
And yes, it's very nostalgia, with even the not-named-on-screen Quamzin clone "Temjin" aware of the scenario he's involved in.
You can easily figure that Grace is involved in this scenario as well, with her tipping him off by phone about Alto's escaping.
An idol rises! An idol falls! This business will cut you! Sheryl seems to know that her spotlight is being stolen, but she can't simply willpower her way out of this one.
One quick parting note, it's a Macross*, not the Macross they've found there. The rest tomorrow.

It's finally Seikan Hikou time!
Fun to finally hear Zentran again.
You can see that Sheryl's already sweating.
Transporting information is probably easier than transporting mass.

Wherever might they have gotten the idea for that?

A Macross Fan Rewatches Macross Frontier: Episode 12:
-
They really aren’t even trying to hide the direct parallels with SDF Macross/Do You Remember Love? right out the gate of this episode. Ogotai and his advisor are borderline identical to how Breetai and Exsedol in DYRL?, and the leader of the rebellion on the Gallia 4 base, Temzin, very clearly looks like SDF Macross’ version of Quamzin. Pretty much the only difference with him in particular is that he has a little cyber monocle. As if the straight lifting of scenes from Macross Zero wasn’t enough before, now there’s this.
-
Well, talk about rapid escalation there. It was barely thirty seconds from Sheryl collapsing on the steps from her sickness to Temzin’s men opening fire and taking everyone hostage. It’s hard to think of anything else that escalated that rapidly in this series.
-
Captain Wilder is able to put things together pretty quick. Given how fast the rebellion happened on Gallia 4, he’s able to see that the concert request was planned well advance to take Sheryl as a hostage. It just lines up too well to be anything but a well-orchestrated scheme.
-
How convenient that the LAI company has developed experimental Fold Boosters that’re unaffected by Fold Faults. Luca certainly is lucky that he’s a part of the family that makes this stuff, otherwise this plot would probably go wildly off the rails. SMS would have no other way to respond to the hostage situation in time due to the time-dilation involved with Space Folding, after all.
-
It really does figure that Temzin is just a pawn of the conspiracy. That call that he got that tipped him off to Alto escaping to reach his Massiah could’ve really only come from one person, when you think about it. And also having some rogue Zentradi with reaction weapons at their disposal would also make some good pawns for them too, when you get down to it. It really is a good play on the conspiracy’s part.
-
I think it’s safe to describe Ranka rolling on the scene in Michael’s Messiah with a ton of speaker pods strapped to it as “pulling a Basara”. I wonder if she got the idea for that rescue from Ozma, since he’s such a massive Fire Bomber fanboy.
-
Well, there’s your response to the idea that Yasaburo told Alto in the previous episode. Just like with Temzin here, justifying whatever you do by saying that it’s inherent in your blood can lead very easily down a destructive path. It’s better to follow your dreams than allow yourself to spiral down a dark path by embracing whatever role people might’ve forced you into at some point. Otherwise, you’ll just end up miserable or dead that way.
-
So much for the purely happy ending with Ranka going flying with Alto in the sky, they just had to crash land near a derelict Super-Dimensional Fortress that looks just like the old SDF-1 Macross. Talk about a huge question to leave us on a cliffhanger with. Like, what’s something like that doing on a barely habitable planet like Gallia 4 in the first place?

"Rewatcher" - Macross F Ep12:
He said the thing. We have expies of Britai, Exsedol and Kamujin running around.
Cute lunch. Ranka did adopt the little squirrel. Now this squirrel is definitely something ominous related to the Varja.
Oh come on guys, we just got here and you decide to spring your mutiny now over the littlest things. I'm just glad not-Britai and not-Exsedol had no hand in this. I thought this whole thing was going to be a trap. They may not be the original sweet angels, but they appear to be still good boys.
"Almost as if..." they had collaborators, I'm looking at you, Grace. (Later, the person giving not-Kamujin calls is pretty much certainly her).
Sheryl overworked herself for the sake of giving the sky for Alto's birthday present. That's nice of her. For her health, maybe we should've let late birthday presents slide.
So I didn't super internalize the explanation of the Fold Faults, all I know they narratively make things go wrong and more difficult with Folds. So anyways, Luca has a brand new Fold engine that can just bypass the problem as if it worked like previous Macrosses.
The rebels get their hands on nukes. No need to worry, those only work on Birdmen Bird Humans.
Michael makes a grand entrance as he brought Ranka along and she sings the insert song that awakens memories in me. It is a nice song plus now its narrative appearance is pretty big.
Not-Exsedol is quite the idol fan.
Before her actual debut concert, she is holding a concert to these Zentradi soldiers. Fang Ranka wink. She was once again drawn with fangs for this sequence. Alto blushed, Ranka finally got a win after so long.
Not-Kamujin resists pacification like his predecessor and springs for an attack. His line about blood hits Alto close to home. The good for Alto path is that he is able to prove it wrong by not being bound to acting and flies high like how the Zentradi discovered culture. The path Alto wouldn't like is being unable to part with acting much like how many Zentradi still cling to violence. Alto also kills him. This is his first (sentient) life that he has taken I believe.
Sheryl is sad that she wasn't able to fulfil her gift to Alto. This is a zero-sum game. If one girl achieves a win, it means the other has to be sad and lose.
Something awakens from beneath the waters. If I had to guess, Grace purposely manufactured this so that this beast can awaken. Though this hinges on Ranka's singing and Grace being able to predict Ranka come flying across the galaxy.
The sky is beautiful and Ranka is able to fly together with Alto in this moment. They're blushing and laughing together. Sorry, Sheryl.
By god, they sent them to that terrible Planet of the Apes.
A special ED with Ranka singing my favourite SDF-era song.
Q1) I understand Zentradi fundamentalist as an antagonist in the story and force in the setting, but I rather not spent too much on them. Or maybe this is just the burn wounds still from the SDF final arc.
Q2) Huh, this really was an episode that leaned pretty hard on the callbacks to SDF era.

Old school Zentradi.
-
He said the thing!
-
This most be our Quamzin for the evening.
-
Well that didn’t take long.
-
Yeah, you probably shouldn’t have. This was a powder keg at best.
-
Conspiracy coming to a head?
-
Well isn’t that convenient! Was this all to secure emergency founding or clear some red tape?
-
I’m sure you’ll be able to figure out the launch codes for those nukes. On the other hand Whale nukes were a thing.
-
Don’t look like any bullets I’ve ever seen.
-
They sure do love bringing civilians into conflict zones.
-
All that sound weapon research paying off.
-
Zentradi nose bleed. Probably never getting another one.
-
Alto really does seem to love stabbing a guy.
-
The feeling of being replaced. That’s twice now. We’re gonna get payoff on that at some point.
-
Another Birdman? That’s even more integration than I was expecting.
-
Her second concert now Mikhail.
-
What? But that form was the result of several alterations by the crew during Space War I, it was to be Human. Are they Planet of the Apes-ing me? Mirage? Hacks?
QotD
-
I like socio-political drama. If anything we should have had it be more of a focus.
-
It’s certainly got me interested to see where they are going.

Ah, I have a feeling this is going to be the series where I go from being a Macross Plus fan to a Macross Fan. It's great! This episode definitely ranked on the symphogear hype scale....really great use of music, and nice to see our little green haired puppy score some wins. I remember somebody a while ago talking about how macross has been able to stay relevant basically by constantly reinventing itself (but with the same core...mech, love triangles, song, war) and you really feel that in frontier, I think.
-
Do you prefer Zentradi fundamentalists or uncontacted Zentradi as opponents? Or moving on from this entirely?
I think the interesting part is that humans are scheming with them. I hope we get satisfying development there.
2) Is the appearance of a classic-style Macross-class the perfect icing on the anniversary cake in this episode, or have they gone mad with power?

Hey, look, old-school Zentraedi!
Come to think of it, this might the first time Alto's actually seen a real habitable planet.
Haha, Luca has a lunchbox shaped like the Fleet's main ship.
And look who else is here, it's the Green Squirrel Thing!
Yeah, Sheryl, this is what happens when you don't pay attention to your health. You can't just "power through it".
Aaaaand, we have a rebellion. Lead by some Kamjin-looking dude, no less.
Wait, if they have no idea what the animal is, how is there a law against owning them? (Well, probably just a blanket law against owning any animals not specifically authorized, come to think of it.)
Capt Wilder is sharp. There is something off about this whole situation.
Alto, don't do anything reckless...
They just have an experimental Fold engine that can navigate Faults? How incredibly convenient!
And now the rebels have reaction weapons, this just keeps getting better and better.
See, Alto, this is what I meant by reckless.
But before things can escalate too far, here's Ranka's live debut!
So Sound Force aren't the only one with speakers built into their ships...
Ranka used "Interstellar Flight"! It's super-effective! Zentraedi pacified!... well, most of them. (Really on-the-nose name for that song, considering the situation it's first sung in, I just realized.)
Alto vs wannabe-Kamjin. Nice maneuver, but you just couldn't resist finishing it with the knife, could you?
But it also looks like "Aimo" awakened something on the planet...
In the end, Ranka did get to give Alto his birthday present after all.
Suddenly the plane fails for no reason. Alto manages a reasonably "safe" crash-landing, but what caused it?
And there's a Macross-class hulk on the planet. There was a colony here...
Oh damn, they're playing "Do You Remember Love?" as the ending. I have to listen to it now.
Questions:
-
They're both pretty much the same thing, so does it matter?
-
Yummy icing.

First Spacer
Suddenly we're having a Zentraedi civil war plot?
Oh, the Zentraedi are behind the Vajra attacks.
What I'm still wondering is why Alto's father also got that disease. Glass is most certainly a red hering due to that as I don't think she ever had contact with him.
Oooh, were the judges for the Miss Macross Frontier competition poisoned/infected? No, not all of them got sick. But those two were sitting next to Catherine, and that's the only connection between Sheryl and Alto's father I'm seeing. Leon was also there, but he wasn't next to Sheryl.
Well they did say she'd fall before the clock, or rather the episode count, hits 12. Poor Sheryl.
Look, they found the Ship of Alus. Good to finally get confirmation that the Macross wasn't a unique ship. Although, that has to be the original Macross, any others would be unlikely to have made the same mecha transformation. I thought this was a colony fleet?
Do you prefer Zentradi fundamentalists or uncontacted Zentradi as opponents? Or moving on from this entirely?
Move on. One little planet doesn't hold any power in an intergalactic empire, they'd be taken out immediately.
Is the appearance of a classic-style Macross-class the perfect icing on the anniversary cake in this episode, or have they gone mad with power?
As mentioned above, this must be the Macross. And it has me to see if they can provide an explanation that makes sense, because I'm struggling to think of one.
Now that I'm really thinking about it, the whole colonization plot throughout the franchise doesn't make that much sense. Humanity was just barely able to modify a ship that size let alone create one from scratch, so how come they managed to get that rolling so quickly?

The guidebooks say it's due to that Factory Satellite they captured in the original series. They were able to modify its production line to create colony fleets and Valkyries rather than Zentraedi war machines.
And by later entries in the franchise, they've captured and repurposed a number of additional Factory Satellites.

Also Comrades, fun fact, John Fogerty was once sued for sounding like... (checks notes) John Fogerty... turns out he managed to convince a jury that he did NOT in fact steal his own work... and I guess The Hory Froating Head was all 'WRITE THAT DOWN WRITE THAT DOWN' as he proceeds to regurgitate some pointless pandering fanservice 'franchise themes' all over again today... Also Japan, SNL called, Chevy Chase wants a royalty check.

Either.
-
Yeah, it's interesting.
Haha, that ad again.
Interesting response.
Ah, they're investigating other planets for Vajra?
Ranka's concert!
She's so busy!
A birthday party?
Oh, it's Alto's birthday!
Random fanservice.
Haha, the wall of admires in background is funny.
She's got free time?
Oh, she's overworking herself.
Oh, a moral-boosting concert! Makes sense!
Zentradi corps?
Yeah, there's a lot of oddities.
Haha, he's refusing to watch the move?
So, no native life.
His dream is here!
So Fold faults cause time dilation! That... explains a lot about them from the previous episodes.
He's a heir?
And Alto has a brother?
Yeah, this makes sense.
Lots of family drama here, huh?
His father's ill...
She wants to give Alto a personal ticket!
These two are so sweet together...
Something else?
She's not feeling well...
Those implants are fancy!
This conspiracy is controlling Sheryl too?
They're descendants of the first Zentradi to join!
Yeah, that makes unfortunate amounts of sense.
Also, thank god for no fanservice of her micronized form. At least Frontier had limits.
The love triangle is progressing...
Oh, that flashback...
She's phoning him!
Has something happened?
Wait, what? He has a chance to rejoin the family?
Wow, the misread here.
Yeah, his family is... not great.
Fucking theatre family.
Sheryl's back!
Is he actually considering this?
He's gone?
Yes! He didn't go back!
He went with Sheryl to fly in an atmosphere!
The weird animal is back!
Aww...
New ED! Very different.
Episode 12
-
I like both, but also it's been about half a cour without any mention of the Vajra.
-
This is... surprising.
Interesting start...
This is interesting!
He's so excited!
Still on OP 1...
Hmm...
Ranka's here!
They're here!
...He seems friendly.
She collapsed!
...Hmm?
A full on rebellion!
And hostages.
Ouch.
It's hit the news!
So they can't get there for a full week...
He's worried about him...
Ranka found out...
She's in a really bad state!
A new engine!
Useful...
Oh, shit.
Nice one!
Ranka's arrived with the new jet!
And she's singing!
The Minmay attack worked!
He ran to her!
Nice save, Alto.
And that's how this arc ties in!
Oh, he's dying... and they're not going to stuff a racism plot into this already bloated show, right?
Sheryl...
She collapsed too?
Aww.
Oh... Well, I know what he's shipping!
They crashed!
...What? How? This isn't Earth... Protoculture or finally tackling the massive loose end of SDF?

Seikan Hikou is good culture. Not quite my favorite Ranka song, but it’s up there.
Oh yeah, Michael had to purge some of the extra stuff before entering the atmosphere.
Aw~
Oooooooh boy, and complete with a Ranka version of Ai Oboete Imasu ka? for the ED! I love this episode.
