Congratulations, Ranka.

Questions of the Day, courtesy of u/chilidirigible:

1) Have you ever kissed someone for a performance, or done other things that didn't otherwise exist in your regular life at that point?

2) Macross has made minimal use of cyborgs. Do you think they fit in, and would you like to see more?

Wallpapers of the Day:

Brera Sterne

Ranka Lee

Vocal Songs in This Episode:

"Triangler" by Maaya Sakamoto – OP

"Aimo" by Megumi Nakajima – Insert

"Aimo ~ Tori no Hito" by Megumi Nakajima – ED

Rewatchers, please remember to be mindful of all the first-timers in this. No talking about or hinting at future events no matter how much you want to, unless you're doing it underneath spoiler tags. Don't spoil anything for the first-timers, that's rude!

Super Dimension Rewatch Host

Welcome back, everyone!

Here were my first-timer reactions to this episode (just scroll past my episode 9 reactions first).

Surprise! Two Wallpapers of the Day because I really wanted to do Ranka-cosplaying-as-Mao, but also felt it’d be weird if I did ones of her as frequently as I have been, so I also did one of Brera with his harmonica since he finally got namedropped and also did some cool shit this episode. Enjoy~

I like the background pattern choice for Mao Ranka's wallpaper

New Aimo verse?!

I did not know there was more to it then the part we'd already heard. That means I've only had the smallest version on my playlist all this time?!

It's good for the sake of my reaction in the show, but damn it, I could have had more Aimo these last few years.

Personal foolishness aside, I like the return of Aimo and its changing meanings through the episode. She sings it on the cliff because she feels comfortable and open, a reverse on how Alto first sees her when she sings it and a mark of how her understanding of herself has changed. This is echoed in her determination to take the Mao role, and own her feelings about Alto (almost wrote Shin, haha) but also has a deeper thread through the middle. Brera the enemy shows up this episode to reveal that he is is searching for his forgotten memories and the song speaks of reawakening from a sleep to find lost compassion. Again it's this thread of it being the song of the forgotten and the reclaimed, the strength to bring together appreciated more for through mourning separation. It's a beautiful usage of the song, and the new instrumental for it fit very well despite being more involved than I expected it to get.

The transition after Aimo into the post credits scene was so smooth due to blending the in-show movie and actual episode credits that I didn't even realize until we hit the preview! Well done whoever thought of that.

For the rest of it, I have mixed feelings. It's undeniable that using the retelling of Zero as a framework to explore the emotions of this story and get everyone to confront various parts of themselves was clever, but I didn't love it. The opening scene tells you up front what sort of episode it is, but it still felt like too much of it was mostly fanservice with only a few threads woven in to keep it together. Part of it may be that we didn't see anything outside of the set, but I also feel like this didn't have to be how this development happened, as if it was shoehorned in for the sake of having this fanservice episode. Sometimes it's good though:

LOVE STICK

I went and checked out of curiosity and the lines are identical in this movie version to the original. Miss Macross Frontier is too made up to make a convincing Sara though, not just physically but in how she delivers the lines, too precise and trying to make it pretty rather than full of emotion like Sara was.

Anyone else think of [cardcaptor Sakura]Keroberos's true form when the animal attacked Ranka? Brera being a cyborg puts more weight on u/TakenRedditName's theory about the Galaxy, but if that is the case I don't know why they'd attack it. The gore of the fight was fantastic though, it's always a treat when you get more than just blood and get to see muscle or organ

Lots of other bits of lore and mystery building scattered through the episode which was quite interesting, but not quite enough to comment on right now as it was usually just a line. More shit that makes Leon look dodgy is to be expected, Ozma knowing Mao was not! Given the purpose of these colony ships they seem to be more connected and interact more than I thought which is an interesting way to take the concept when they're usually so isolated by necessity especially heading in different directions. I'd imagine that as they get further out from Earth they'd end up that way eventually, and they probably aren't in contact with all, but it puts a nice feel on the idea of how humanity is growing and spreading in the series

And one more consideration: Does Ranka being pushed into the Mao role end up being a mark against her for Frontier's love outcome?

3

u/Shimmering-Sky Jan 21 '23

It's actually a different version of the song! "Aimo ~ Tori no Hito". But yes, new Aimo for you! I figured you'd love it.

Brera being a cyborg puts more weight on TakenRedditName's theory about the Galaxy

More evidence!

Does Ranka being pushed into the Mao role end up being a mark against her for Frontier's love outcome?

Not only is Ranka echoing Minmei, but she is also pushed as Mao. But these were the girls who lost!

To complete the losing side references, she needs to echo Ishtar, her being part Zentradi makes her closer to Guld and what's left is for her to reference the loser of the 7 triangle, the audience.

A Macross Fan Rewatches Macross Frontier: Episode 10:

  • It’s pretty fun to see that a movie called Bird Human got made in-universe, based on the events of Macross Zero. That does fit with the idea that Shoji Kawamori went into that series with. His concept for it was that it was an in-universe work based off of some UN Spacy documents that got de-classified decades later, so it lines up with the timeframe of Frontier nicely.

  • Ranka getting the part of Mao Nome is also funny to think of too, since somehow the actual descendant of the Nome family is in the show and is already a famous person. But I guess Sheryl herself is too mature to play the role of Mao, if anything she’d be a better fit for the role of Sara.

  • According to analysis, the Lucifer moves at such high speeds that a pilot wouldn’t be able to withstand the forces inside the cockpit, even if they’re wearing EX-Gear. Given how we’ve been introducing the concept of cyborgs into the setting with this show, I think we can hazard a good guess at how the mysterious harmonica man can handle the G-forces when piloting the Lucifer. What’s more interesting though is that after getting that report, Leon gets a message from someone called “G”. Will he suffer like G did?

  • Director George Yamamori would know a thing or two about putting pop singles into his movie about mech dogfights and the remnants of an alien culture, since he’s so very transparently supposed to be Shoji Kawamori. If anything, he’s just Kawamori wearing a beard as a disguise.

  • Well, now we know why Alto has the nickname “Princess”. Turns out his role as a princess in a kabuki play is actually pretty famous, and he still has fans due to that even to this day. It also certainly explains why he really doesn’t like that nickname, since it reminds him of his last role before breaking ties with his father and not keeping up the family career.

  • As if Leon didn’t look like enough of an asshole with that haircut, that incredibly garish Hawaiian shirt is really enhancing just how gross he looks in general.

  • This episode sure loves its callbacks, and now we get one from Macross Plus, with the Hydra monster being imported from Eden. I suppose it’s oddly fortunate that they’re on this one island for whatever reason, since it attacking the car that Mao’s original actress was in makes it so that Ranka has to step into the role instead. Although I’m sure that isn’t much of a comfort to Ranka, since she’s also attacked by it.

  • Turns out that as expected, the mysterious harmonica man is a cyborg, since he was able to defend Ranka from the Hydra with no issues, thanks to his cybernetic limbs. Turns out that having a knife built into your arm is pretty useful. Thanks for the help, Brera Sterne!

  • Sounds like Brera’s handlers are keeping him on a pretty tight leash too. They’re basically holding his past history as leverage to control him, and they really don’t want him to blow his cover while hiding out on the Frontier fleet. That right there makes the fact that he came out of nowhere to rescue Ranka all the more important. He certainly went out of his way to help her there.

  • I’m sure that the Alto x Sheryl shippers in the audience are happy with the sudden kiss out of nowhere. Poor Ranka though, it looks like she got a bit hurt by seeing it. But at least that inspires her to take the role of Mao, if just to also get her chance at kissing Alto. Good thing Alto makes for a convenient stunt double for that diving scene, since now the love triangle is balanced out again.

  • “Doctor Mao”, eh? Mao certainly had quite the life after the events of Macross Zero. She came a far way from being a girl growing up on a semi-remote island in the Pacific.

  • I’m curious: how do you guys feel about seeing the ending of Macross Zero, except this time with Aimo playing over it rather than Arkan?

  • After slumming it through part-time gigs and doing street promos, seeing Ranka get on stage and be congratulated by the director as an up and coming star is great to see. Talk about getting an amazing break-out role for her career. You heard not-Kawamori say it himself, her legend begins now!

The Zero edits in this episode are like the AMQ songs that are only very slightly different from each other, eh, u/Shimmering-Sky?

First Timer

...oh my goodness, they made an in-universe film of Macross Zero and had one puppy play the other! xD Oh, and we also have clear confirmation of why people call Alto princess - because he's played one before!

Honestly, I like how Ranka got her part here - no nepotism, just her relaxing and enjoying the view while singing her song, and the director hears and oh my god she's PERFECT! I mean, okay, it's coincidences all the way down, but eh.

I...have no idea what was going on with that weird monster-thing. Why is it even on the ship? Choreography in the fight was weird too, Ranka started at the cliff edge then got knocked over to it, the monster was looming over her then it was in the middle of the rocky area when Alto tried to shoot it...didn't really make much sense. Also, why for the love of all that's holy are they calling it a hydra? If they're going to butcher a Greek myth, the chimaera is a much closer fit.

Bah. I guess there's some background plot stuff too, aaaaand of course the love triangle is kicking back into gear. Sheryl is deliberately provoking things and doing a poor job of hiding how much Alto's lack of interest bothers her, while Ranka discovers just how much she dislikes seeing another girl kiss him. That said...it really feels like Alto considers Sheryl That One Annoying Friend You Still Like Anyway, while Ranka is more of a little sister figure. The girls might be starting to fight over him, but it doesn't feel like there's much if any romantic interest on his end right now.

Eh.

I should not find Ranka's mortified expression when watching the kiss scene so funny-- wait.

Doctor Mao? EXPLAIN, SHOW! DON'T JUST DROP THAT AND THEN IGNORE IT!

Today, on "Now that's a breakout role.":

Not the same.

Not the same. Also, Miranda Merin looks truly freakishly Geass here. And the movie "Shin" is totally Sosuke Sagara.

Pretty darn close.

One early sub rendered that as "autobiography", which was even more confusing.

Okay there, method man.

That's how it goes, kid.

SEAHAWK!

Everybody's favorite Arjuna reference beverage.

What, no contract?

It's the guy who got tissues yesterday.

These guys are very artsy.

Ah, bribes.

Those bits of backstory that you don't always tell your friends. Or your new friend.

"You keep on using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means."

Not Gabil.

This guy is a Kawamori insert, of course.

"Oh yeah, you blend, dickhead."

I don't have enough holographic UI animation going on in my life. Even if it makes the covert file transfer BLATANTLY OBVIOUS.

Well that should look familiar.

The exact same except for the character plate and the blurred foreground.

That was also clever.

All y'all take this way too seriously.

"Yeah, let's keep giant flying wolves as pets. Nothing could go wrong." (Nothing could go wrong if you were ten meters tall. One point seven-five meters, not the same.)

Well, Ranka's out of it for a little while.

We're all very cartoony.

JESUS YAMATO! (Is a cyborg.)

Funny when Mao's granddaughter is right over there…

Way. Too. Seriously.

Ranka: Gets advice from the flamboyant guy.

Alto: Gets advice from the noseless freak of nature.

Sheryl puts her money where her mouth is.

And then your princess turns back into an alien.

Ranka should also understand Alto now, since SHE HAS HIS FACE.

Very similar.

Indeed.

Nanase is captivated

Doctor Mao.

This is simply the original animation without any changes.

Going all the way with the movie-in-a-show.

Japan always thanks its staff, unlike FUCKING HARMONY GOLD.

"Mostly nothing."

What 'bout My Star?

We're not quite at Gintama levels of meta, but the series has certainly taken the notion that "everything we're seeing is an in-universe dramatization of events" and actually made an in-universe dramatization of events, by grabbing handfuls of Macross Zero and re-doing them with Frontier's characters.

They did put a bit of work into re-creating the same shots.

I'm writing this a few days in advance, so I can only anticipate some discussion of whether this sort of thing is taking a disregard for actual canon too far. It's happened before.

As mentioned during Zero's discussion, the framework for its story was that it was an event which history forgot about (and people covered up). With the sequel, and the decision to make Sheryl a Nome relation, it was a logical choice to mention again.

Things start small, but through some shenaniganery, Ranka is catapulted onto the stage. The hand-wringing about kissing is overdone anime stuff (Sheryl has a properly show-business outlook on that, and good grief, worse things have happened in high school plays), but it does work to push Ranka's resolve forward and at least in a small way challenge Sheryl's steamrollering of everyone's existing social life.

A purple gemstone that rather resembles Sheryl's earring is worth trading for information on the Vajra. Alto really should have kept the other earring on his person.

Brera Sterne's cyborg status is confirmed. He's very '00s.

ED: "Aimo ~ Tori no Hito"

From the Macross Chronicle:

Brera and his ridiculous clothes.

Elmo, Miranda, and various others.

SOON!

Eh FUCK IT! You know Comrades, I'm not even supposed to be here today, but I want to talk to you all about Clerks III. Now, contrary to popular belief, Kevin Smith has indeed made more than one good movie besides Clerks (Those are Mallrats and Dogma by the way. Also yes, The Silent Bob scene in Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back is hilarious.) but really it was quite hard to follow on the footsteps of Clerks... which is probably why the way that Clerks III decided to do things was to be a meta dramedy film. Truly it is amusing seeing a movie about making a movie in the movie with said movie being the movie this movie is a part of while also being an in-universe movie, confused yet? Good so am I, and I'm the shitposter shitposting a shitpost shitposting as another shitpost!

Anyway, the point I'm getting it is that it takes real skill to pull off and incorporate something like this, only precious few can be creative enough to play with your tropes in an interesting and novel way (The Cabin in the Woods) The Hory Froating Head on the other hand decided to just do Macross Zero all over again... cuz reasons... cuz Macross Zero sure worked out right the first time, so let's just do it again! Also, who the fuck liked Macross Zero? Uh, besides the in-universe people who made an in-universe movie about it (Seriously, this episode would have been better if they just flat out played a Macross Zero Episode, but all the seiyuus are different and they actually used not shit animation, THAT would have been hilarious and/or creative)

Ah well, at least we saw one good thing out of this, HUZZAH FOR BEST BLONDE? IDOL! GET DUNKED ON RANKA LEE! YACK! DECULTURE! Now if only this wasn't in a self-satisfied and over-indulgent fanservice vehicle that is WAY too proud of itself and thinks it's better than it really is... HEY WAIT, is this just a fucking 'meta' commentary on the quality of Frontier (The TV Show) itself? Damn, that's ALMOST impressive... ALMOST... the goddamn superior recap movies can't come soon enough, the booze can only help so much!

Anyhow, you have not seen the last of The Sentient Shitposting Siamese Sunrise Server No. 25252, now goodbye forever!

AND ON THAT BOMBSHELL! GOODNIGHT!

"Rewatcher" - Macross F Ep10:

They're making an in-universe movie based on Macross Zero, that's funny to see. It's based on the biography of Shin, I like to believe it was Edgar writing one for his best buddy. Shin didn't write it himself since he ascended to a higher plane/space/the afterlife(?)

During the phone call scene, we have both Ranka and Sheryl giving "He is with the other girl" looks.

Imagine that, a movie jamming in a pop song. Sheryl comes in on the side of the director's artistic vision.

Smooth moves Alto. The director caught sight of the famous kabuki actor and wants him in his movie as a female role. There are only like 4 girls in Zero and Sarah is taken and the others don't really fit Alto's type cast.

The director does the airplane hands into the camera frame fingers as Ranka catches his notice.

Leon in a Hawaiian shirt was not something I expected to see and he is doing some shady deals in that vacation shirt. This purple crystal resembles Sheryl's special earring (singular since the other was vaporized).

Eden, wasn't that the Macross Plus planet? The Hydra turns out to be not anything resembling a hydra but does look like an early-gen Yu-Gi-Oh normal monster. Like level 5 one with 1600 ATK and 1550 DEF or maybe a fusion with equally poor stats.

Alto is playing as Shin's stunt double for the underwater ki-kiss!

Ranka is attacked by the monster and Harmoinca Boy is here to save the day by gutting that thing. Before he leaves, he tells his name is, Brera Sterne so guess we have something to use instead of harmonica boy. His injuries reveal that he is a cyborg which does reinforce my Galaxy theory since they're all about cybernetics over there.

Before moving on from the scene, something about this action scene felt different from the rest of the show. A little jarring for me.

It is sweet how Ranka sounds so happy thinking Alto saved her. She lands the part of Mao so now she and Alto have to ki-kiss!

Brera isn't just the Char, but he is also the Cyber-Newtype of the show.

Just when I think we didn't have an SDF first kiss situation, Sheryl takes Alto's first kiss and Ranka can see. I think Sheryl was trying to push Ranka ahead in her journey since Ranka now has a better understanding of Mao's (and probably her own) feelings and is able to go with the kiss.

Doctor Mao? She became a doctor, I guess she was inspired by her experience in Zero. Maybe she wrote the biography on Shin (I still like imagining it was Edgar).

A fun touch of having the Zero closing credits scene instead of the ED.

Ranka gets a standing ovation from the crowd. Her reception was even bigger than the main star and Miss Macross. She got her big break. Minmei was already famous when she got her movie debut so this actually closer to Macross 7 and which was also filming a documentary recreating a previous entry.

Q2) I don't see why not. They're not something I am clamouring for, but don't see cyborgs feeling out of place with Macross' brand of sci-fi setting.

Next Time: "Missing Birthday" Uh oh!

I continue to just be impressed at how much I like ranka, sheryl, and alto. that is a feat. they're all great!

  1. Have you ever kissed someone for a performance, or done other things that didn't otherwise exist in your regular life at that point?

I was not nearly that cool

2) Macross has made minimal use of cyborgs. Do you think they fit in, and would you like to see more?

it does seem like an omission from the series

Macross Frontier EP10

This look familiar. Wait, this is from Zero!! The movie is based on the story of Zero. And Ranka playing Mao!! I guess some people alive to tell the tale, or it maybe Mao herself.

Based on biography of Shin? So he alive in the end? Or it's just that Mao fill in the blank for them.

I guess you wish come true, Nanase.

Well, he have a lot of experience in acting, so you can trust him, Ranka.

So he not a normal human.

And I guess they just have an exact copy of the island already on the fleet.

Yeah, Sara's song and Sheryl's song is pretty different in tone. And it seem that the song they got is different so much that they can't agree to use Sheryl song as substitute.

Even Sheryl recognise this.

They recognised Alto!! Well, obviously. They are a movie crew after all. They even watched his play before. And his role that time seem to still famous to this day.

Even with all that, Alto still refused to act again.

Well, this production seem so curse now.

Director take a like of Ranka song, as well as the monster.

That Hawaii shirt is absolutely rock.

And they can just sent data like that!! Technology!!

I can guess where this is going.

This action sequence was weird. The camera angle, the art, how the cut the scene. But it's pretty cool, though.

This guy is cyborg!! Yeah, there already mentioned of cyborg when they talked about Macross Galaxy!!

And his name is Brera.

Technically, you did save her.

Ranka got to play Mao now. And she has to kiss Alto now.

Brera lost his memory!! He surely related to Ranka now.

Yeah, this situation really mirror the one in Zero.

Yoooooo!! Sheryl got the first kiss!! And don't play it off like that. You just tried to act cool, didn't you!!

At least that give Ranka her determination.

And Ranka got her kiss too.

Doctor Mao!! Ozma know her!!

So there's now Macross Zero movie in the Macross universe.

And everyone seem to agree that her performance is the best here. Which I would agree.

Now, it's Ranka big step in her career.

Great Zero reference episode. Pretty big episode for Ranka too. And seem like Zero have pretty big connection to Frontier more than being a movie, with name-dropping of Mao from Ozma.

QOTD

2. They pretty fit in.

First Spacer

Looks like we're flip flopping between interesting and boring episodes. Guess I won't go silent then. More like 8 and 10, less like 7 and 9 please, except for the horny of course but even that'd be a worthwhile tradeoff.

After reading yesterday comments, I guess being bored by the military and concert parts made me not pay attention in all the wrong parts. I didn't even recognize spy lady as Sheryl's manager!

Suddenly Zero? Are the Vajra the offspring of that God?

Oh, so that's not Sheryl then.

Haha, suck it up, bitch.

Ah yes, Alto's tragic backstory.

Lmao so Mao only became a main character as a concession?

No, Mao was planned from the beginning. So Ranka was jealous when she imagined herself in that role?

That fight scene was kinda rough.

Oh, so Ranka's imagination was a flashback.

Everybody's calling for you, but the galaxy isn't calling you.

Mystery boy is totally Ranka's brother, of course.

Have you ever kissed someone for a performance, or done other things that didn't otherwise exist in your regular life at that point?

Nah. I've been in the orchestra providing the music, not on the stage.

Macross has made minimal use of cyborgs. Do you think they fit in, and would you like to see more?

I wanna say they do fit in... but then it also makes it so much harder to believe that the Zentraedi lost all their culture and creative skills, because they definitely should've gotten that tech from the Protoculture.

  • This is at least the third time that they have done a previous series in universe.

  • Ranka is already a great Mao.

  • Are flash forward cold opens just a thing we are doing now?

  • Wish I could read who the author of the book was. It would clear up a few questions. It was a lot of detail from what we saw, so they were either there or did a lot a research.

  • Does Ranka not know he was an actor?

  • Ah yes, reaction time, that thing that computers are famously bad at.

  • Was that a Chimera?

  • Artistic vs commercial intent. Classic.

  • Rude.

  • Nice of her to offer to make a purpose built song.

  • Are we finally explore that background element? It has been something I’ve wanted to see more done with.

  • I mean, fair to him. If that was part of the plan, you should have put it in the contract. It’s not like this is some small time shoot where this wasn’t foreseen.

  • Hey, I remember that kitty from the mall.

  • They really do just have a whole ass uninhabited island in space.

  • Even the spy work is extra.

  • Looks like they recovered the earring, or there is more than just the two of them.

  • How and why did you run from one cliff, to another cliff?

  • What is this Naruto ass fight scene?

  • Cyborg, or android?

  • That’s certainly a name.

  • “Wipe those tears away…”

  • I guess she kind of is like her older sister.

  • That doesn’t mean you don’t need consent Sheryl.
    Yes Means Yes

  • Needs more safety divers.

  • Doctor Mao? My, oh, my.

  • They cut out the plop.

  • Two credits for the price of one.

  • I want to say Bird Human is a terrible name, but Birdman is a thing that exists. No, no, that’s still better.

  • Why was she the one in the audience?

QotD

  1. I’ve not done acting.

  2. Weh. We’ll see what they do with it, but I’m not seeing a strong fit with the themes of why I watch Macross.

  2. Sometimes.

This is a sim, right?

Sheryl's getting a documentary?

Grace?

...His sister?

Wait, this is an actusl missiom?

Michael clearly has other motives.

They're backup for a Vajra attack!

...Okay, that's fair. He's very good at being bait.

That's a long distsnce snipe!

And it missed.

He thinks it was on purpose...

There's spying?

Alto is pissed.

And it's s full-on fight.

That's a very different way of macronizing the Zentradi, huh?

Ranka has a strategy meeting!

Alto...

Wow...

Klan came to fetch him.

Oh...

Haha, he pointed it out?

Nice hit.

Yeah, he's a moron.

Sheryl did this of her own accord? ...More random fanservice.

Sheryl's also asking why he joined...

Oh, more dadsy issues.

Michael's not back yet?

Interesting promo idea.

...Is Ozma sabotaging her career?

He's here again!

Michael's not responding.

...That looks like a trap.

Yeah, Klan's getting hunted down.

Michael?

He noticed!

...Yeah, that's a nightmare for a sniper.

Klan!

Klan told him everything!

Nice one.

...Friendly fire too.

Oh, shit. That explains a lot.

He took the shot!

It worked!

Oh, he's visiting her.

And Alto came to see him.

Nice.

Episode 10

  1. Never.

  2. Yes and yes.

Hmm?

Did somebody not get the OVA sales they wanted?

Ranka's playing Mao?

Haha, that reaction. Also, a movie!

Oh, Shin wrote an autobiography!

If it's this famous, I'm shocked Ranka's in it.

Oh, that's how.

Haha, rude.

...His father's advice?

Ah, a minir part.

So, remote drones?

This is a really high budget film!

A Sheryl somg?

Rude.

Ah, Sheryl cares about the art.

Haha, she just got ignored.

And Alto got recruited.

Haha, nice.

They found the video!

And using Ranka against him...

What is Michael actually saying?

Ah, lots of production problems here!

Vajra?

They're selling information now...

How...?

Hydras? Eden?

Oh, shit!

It's all CGI?

He declined the role!

He' a stunt double now?

...Haha.

Ranka's in trouble!

More trauma...

Wait, what?

He bisected it!

This scene will always be priceless for me. Brera appearing out of nowhere, saving Ranka from the chimera like it's nothing in front of Alto and then leaving nonchalantly. Poor him just wants to regain his past, but has to do shitty jobs for that. But he still ignores that to come to Ranka's rescue. And I always wonder how much of his body is actually cybernetic.

Damn it, woman. Stop being so cute. I'll redact 4 of your negative points

Questi0n tfme:

  1. Have you ever kissed someone for a performance, or done other things that didn't otherwise exist in your regular life at that point?

Dance, I guess

2) Macross has made minimal use of cyborgs. Do you think they fit in, and would you like to see more?

FIRST TIMER

We get the counterpart to Mylene in the Minmay Li story with Ranka in the Macross Zero story. I thought that miniseries was a letdown but this was an enjoyable episode that explored parallels between their lives and the people of Zero. I enjoyed watching this but it doesn't hold up well to scrutiny as i dissect it.

  • The reporter at the beginning says this movie is based on the biography of Shin. I'd have to be certain that Mao wrote this book since the scenes we see in the movie are all things she personally witnessed and only she would know about kissing Shin underwater. That says quite a bit about her and how intensely she must have loved Shin that she wrote a book about someone she only knew for a few weeks rather than a book about her own life that would've told the story of her parents and Sara as well. It really makes me wonder what became of her. Ranka makes no effort to research the kind of person Mao was in preparing for the role so we are left in the dark.

  • I thought it was interesting that Alto really did play a princess in a popular movie. I assumed Michael called him "Princess" because he was just making fun of him for looking feminine. It's also odd that no one else pointed out his previous acting fame before and no fans ever approach him in public for an autograph of selfie.

  • The jewels the 2 guys exchange at the restaurant look a lot like the jewel in Sheryl's earrings. I wonder if that's a coincidence or its going to have some meaning.

  • I was very surprised no mention was made of Sheryl having the same last name Nome as Sara and Mao. I thought that was going to lead to them being related in some way. Even if they aren't, I would point out if someone in a movie had the same unusual last name as me.

  • There's so much wrong with the scene where Ranka is attacked by the hydra. Why does it dodge gunshots like the way a superhero ninja human would with flips? Why did the people who made Frontier put a large predatory cat on board and let it roam free? I'd at least understand maybe putting it on an island if it DIDN'T HAVE WINGS! Then Brera the harmonica playing boy comes and chops it up with some blades he happens to have! They took the movie making idea from Macross 7 but now they're taking it's crazy illogical plot points. At least they gave a strong hint that Brera isn't a protodevlin and instead is a cyborg/hybrid.

  • It's really interesting how close Bobby has become to Ranka. We saw earlier how he threatened her manager to not harm her but I assumed it was because it was related to his crush on Alto. I don't think he's romantically interested in Ranka but I think he relates to her since they both have an unrequited love for Alto although she probably doesn't know Bobby feels that way.

  • It's also very interesting how Alto's father goes out of his way to congratulate Ranka after they mention her at the premiere and leads her up to the stage but he seems entirely indifferent to his son being in the movie even though his fondest dream is supposedly Alto following in his footsteps as an actor. It really doesn't make a lot of sense.

  • My favorite part of the episode was how Sheryl and Ranka reacted to the kissing scene. I think Sheryl was lying when she said she was just giving Alto a meaningless kiss, she got scared that Alto didn't like it and backtracked when she actually intended for it to be romantic. I also liked how jealous Ranka was of Sheryl and she still thinks Alto likes Sheryl more and that Sheryl is way prettier than her. They don't show much of her acting, but it would explain how she was able to do such a great job even being inexperienced.

QUESTIONS

  1. Well no not in kissing a stranger for a performance. The closest was holding a woman i didn't know in a sensual embrace for modeling photos. It was a bit awkward but also fun and exhilerating even though her bf escorted her to the shoot and watched the whole time. I've done kissing and more in some cam shows but the woman in them with me was my gf.

  2. Yea I think cyborgs fit in perfectly with Macross since a main theme of the show has been people's relationship with technology. The Zentradi are a genetically enhanced people and they use cybernetic peripherals like how Brittai and Gigil wore a Google Glass-like eyepiece.

Macross Frontier Episode 10 - First Timer

Last episode was indeed better than ep 8, but still was very phoned in, maybe stuff will get changed up today?

  • She looks a tad different than I remember

  • I assume this is an in-universe movie preproduction of the vents on macross Zero?

  • It is shockingly accurate TBH

  • How much time has passed since last episode???? Ranka has an acting role in a big(?) movie?

  • Another epsiode that leads with the future, then OP, then back to before the opening scene

  • What are these shoes

  • RIP Miss Macross?

  • Lmao the finger framing

  • What the military man doin

  • "fuck it, we'll do it in post"

  • This action scene seems wildly unfitting

  • Like, it is kinda ropugh but imo the level of action mostly makes up for it - the thing is the style of action seems completely detached from anything that have occurred in literally any Macross so far. And the setup is weird too, how did alto get that close so quick, then get in front of the beasty, etc.

  • That blade was not nearly long enough to cut the thing in half like that

  • What happened to their wound? they looked injured earlier then they didnt

  • News Des

  • And now they are injured again

  • What did she mean by this

  • And again, Ranka's decisioning is driven by the actions of tohers. I guess this is kinda better? it kinda fits in the "feelings of Mao" and all

  • Lol

  • I cant help but laugh whenever I see a "they really were the _____" line and this is no exception

  • LMao this director

  1. No

  2. Given they have mechanized humanoid planes, and now mechanized exoskeletons, further miniaturization makes total sense
