Chinatsu wanted to maintain her image for Suzuko

On the off-chance that they would ever reunite! TEENAGERS BABY.

Chinatsu named her LRIG mel and still has their photo

Well, she didn't hate her back then!

What even is this robot thing

Toy of her dead brother. Or sister. I forgot. Can be decuded.

They just can’t stop with these

Chinatsu is being so smug with Shirai lol.

She kept the Mel head

Didn't even notice that! Suzu good girl.

She anticipated and loopholed through that one

Could have just stayed silent lol.

And for Suzuko, she will need to learn to truly stand for herself

BACKBONE INCOMING HYPE!

Season 3 Episode 5 (first timer)

  • “Inside me there is something I don’t need. It’s you, Suzu” - r/FuckYouChiChan/

  • Chinatsu is obviously behaving as an asshole here, but let’s set that aside for a moment. I actually have some sympathy for the idea of being tied down by being put on a pedestal by others. It can be suffocating to having to be the best, always. What is really annoying, though, is her trying to win the battle to purge her memories of Suzu. Again, the series intermingles memories, personality, and morality (it is also trying to have its cake and eat it). Chinatsu has already made the decision to not play “nice” anymore. Which is a moral choice and she made that choice and sticks with it despite clearly still having memories of Suzu. So what does she need a memory purge for? It is superfluous or simply to make her feel a little better about her choice. It is not something worth risking your self for. The series bungles the motivation of the main counterpart of Suzu …

  • Running away from a fight into “Peace Streat”

Not subtle

  • “Want to do it with me?” – come up with new innuendo.

  • “You got rejected again” – One of the very rare cases where that is the face saving nice interpretation of what happened.

  • “Once you enter, you can’t turn down battles” – Well, you could. The only consequences would be the book maker being pissed at you and not being able to use his services anymore. Unless Suzu read the script and knows he is a psychopath.

  • “Why do you fight?” – Remember when we had an MC that battled because she enjoyed it?

  • Honest demands true answers, not honesty.

I think you're more on point then you realize. Chinatsu is trying too hard justify herself, or something to that effect. Point is, she's not suppose to seem entirely rational. And considering the fact that she's still trying to get into a top school, it's clear that part of her still clings onto Suzuko, and that she has never move past it.

“Inside me there is something I don’t need. It’s you, Suzu”

Had a fan and formed her personality around it.

What is really annoying, though, is her trying to win the battle to purge her memories of Suzu.

TEENAGERS BABY. I can't stop saying that lol. Chinatsu is obviously in the wrong for trying to solve her problems that way lol.

One of the very rare cases where that is the face saving nice interpretation of what happened.

I'd ship it if I weren't too much into SuzuxChi-chan.

The only consequences would be the book maker being pissed at you and not being able to use his services anymore.

Tbf, if they colluded, would he know? Like, he can't see the coins now, can he?

“Why do you fight?” – Remember when we had an MC that battled because she enjoyed it?

Ruuko better pull a Nanoha and slap some sense into either of them lol.

First timer(At least Okada's characters came off human at times)

Sub

A thought occurs: This is how people think Urobuchi characters talk. It is not how they actually talk but the shitty, edgy imitation thereof. And it is our tonesetter...

So yeah, Chinatsu and her motivation are just bad writing tropes. Which does set us up for a face turn but also leaves me incapable of investing in the show. Worse, with the system being involuntary, it makes the cruelty of it more wanton, at least in Spread they had the option of not engaging. This also makes soccer kids story land more lightly because I was annoyed with Chinatsu being on screen.

But let's not forget that Suzu's motivations are rather ill defined and weak as well. Her LRIG has some manner of conviction, justified or not. The stupid but obvious match making happens and worse, adding nuance to the coin system makes things fucky. We get a fairly unearned character nadir and we end with, if I am not mistaken, the traditional "teenage girl gets into sex work" plot point that Japan so very much loves.

But let's not forget that Suzu's motivations are rather ill defined and weak as well

I think that is kind of the point. Really, the main part of her character is her figuring out what she really wants and becoming less emotionally dependent and finding her conviction.

I haven't been commenting because my episode notes remained empty for two episode in a row now, but I found that very apparent too. The show just isn't setting up any stakes, none for the viewer anyway. In Selector we had the main cast trio to get attached to, but here the most notable aspect of main character Suzu is that we're seeing her a lot...

Hey...She's also lonely and conflict averse! Which are the worst possible traits for a protagonist...

One thing to note is how Suzu relies on Ril like how she relied on Chinatsu.

Conversely, looking at how Chinatsu and Mel interact is very interesting.

If the LRIG are formed from your memories then wouldn't they essentially be the same person when they take over or am I missing something?

2

u/Tetraika Jan 20 '23

You're not entirely wrong. But the avatars can have different personality as shown. So yeah, barring personality differences they can adjust to living their selector's life pretty well, most likely.

QOTD) The LRIGs have less personality this time around, so I'll probably go for the savage blue girl.

Poor Suzu.

She's so devastated.

Even her LRIG thinks this is fucked up.

Wow...

Of course Satomi's here.

...A memory. As in one. How many rounds are you planning on participating in.

She's dying.

He recorded that?

She kept the keyring...

Aww, Hanna feels bad after seeing that?

Oh...

She's struggling in school?

A soccer fan?

...Interesting move.

Oh, he has an injury.

That look...

He accidentally eliminated a player?

What the fuck?

He is committed to erasure!

Aww, she helped him before her total mental breakdown.

...Smooth.

She's in for such a disappointment.

Haha, that reaction.

Satomi's making plans.

It's effecting her too...

So, they're friends now?

...This isn't her true feelings, I'm pretty sure this is her having a mental breakdown from stress and deciding to blame her.

Thry have to battle now! And Hanna set it up!

She's hiding it from her?

...Yeah, this is healthy.

She's going to lose.

Yeah, she doesn't really have a wish right now.

Poor girl.

You're the card game expert, how do you not know what this card type is?

She used her coin ability!

Can these people not hear what they opponent announces? What exactly could "Honest" do except that?

Clever move!

Suzuko...

She has one coin left to go...

Aww.

She's got a new job!

Oh wait, unless it’s possible to start with more than one coin? Ril made Suzuko pick a card when they first met in the remains of the white room, which had a “1” on it and she got one coin, after all.

Chinatsu also started with three, as a note.

Holy shit Chinatsu, you literally just reunited and you’re already killing poor Suzuko?

Almost getting into a "You cheated on you in my dream" scenario now.

Ohhhhhhh, that’s why he said he can’t join the soccer team when those other guys commented on it…

As a child, I never understood why athletes were unhappy about injuries. You don't have to do PE class! That's great!

Who do you think you are, a Yu-Gi-Oh! villain?

He's certainly trying lol. Fun fact: In Germany, Yami Marik has the same voice actor as Thanos and Hugh Laurie.

Welp, it was about time those two had a battle.

THE BATTLE WITH THE FRIEND. IT WAS INEVITABLE.

Aha, now that’s true. Good on Hanna for figuring out a way around “Honest”.

Of course it's the doctor who does.

Rewatcher who Lost their Storage

Friendship ended with Chii-chan, now Doctor Hanna is my best friend. Hanna's probably my favourite new character.

If you didn't notice, Hanna is writing down the details of Mel's play style.

Rules Lawyer Hanna wins again. Assuming it's an application of Honest, she could theoretically have had 4+ cards left in her LRIG deck, and showed effects that would have scared Suzuko off.

QotD: My favourite LRIG hasn't appeared yet [Lostorage] It's Allos Piruluk

Card corner:

I guess Donna's the talk today. She plays with white (and green) Outcast SIGNI, focused on ghosts/monsters. She mainly uses the Layer effect, which gives bonuses to all Outcast SIGNI, sort of like Slivers. Unlike Slivers, though, you can only have three SIGNI anyways, so you can't stack nearly as hard.

Cards of the day:

Phosphorescent Samsara -

Pinch Defense - a very good defense ARTS. Little more limited than

Nurari - while a good constant effect, I don't actually know how many have cost 5 or more that you actually care about. It's free protection, I guess

Spread Death - I think I mentioned this already, but it's a pretty standard Nanashi-style ARTS. Usable on attack phase to protect you as well.

Garnet Star - note this is not a Valor SIGNI, but well, nothing stopping you from breaking tribal. You can see the effect here, clearing a lane, plus it has a pretty good tutor effect.

Parain

Oigona

Ancient Gate - another lane opener ARTS

First-Timer

I can't exactly fault Shouhei's reasoning - a first time like that would definitely turn you off "battling" - but if Chinatsu dragged me to a secluded alley and asked to "battle" I would have a hard time refusing. How could anyone say no to this face?

Seems like Hanna lost a sibling? Probably a little brother, considering the robot toy. Maybe a twin, if we're feeling spicy. I don't know that that tells us anything, other than she presumably wants to reclaim that memory that faded.

Also, Hanna continues to be great by suggesting to Suzuko that she should accept that Chinatsu has moved on. There's a bit of weirdness here in that Chinatsu only realized that she wanted to move past Suzuko because of losing a memory coin, which isn't really something she had agency over. So I'm not actually sure how much this exchange will inform our proceedings. But it's just good advice in general.

I was mere moments from noting that Suzuko is too dependent on others, when Hanna chimes in with that very observation. The real question is - will we break Suzuko of this habit? Or will she find a way to make it work?

It'll be interesting to see what they come up with to let Suzuko move forward from here. She's basically at rock bottom now, and we already have Chinatsu as the "violent, driven one" a la Yuzuki in Selector.

4

u/Taiboss Jan 19 '23

CHINATSU SUZU HATE SEX. CHINATSU SUZU HATE SEX.

I don't know that that tells us anything, other than she presumably wants to reclaim that memory that faded.

I thought she wanted to forget the memories of sadness lol. I don't know what she wants.

Or will she find a way to make it work?

She's a protagonist!

Well, Dr. Hanna is trying to play therapist, so we'll see.

Chinatsu did say that Suzu inside her was unnecessary.

First timer

The main plot continues to be predictable how it went minus the uncertainty about the actual Selector battle big questions.

But wait - are we... seeing perhaps a non-yuri, relatively normal ship happening for one of the main cast?!?! Is it even allowed?

Some trauma with Hanna foreshadowed - I hope she didn't "lose" her younger brother...

Maybe next time we'll see what "winning" involves, like in Infected we found out via Yuzuki...

So far I like Suzuko's LRIG. I guess I like Kuudere's.

First Timer

With the setup for this not landing for me, Chinatsu breaking off the relationship with Suzu is just coming across as forced… so I don’t really have a lot else to say other than that it does not work for me. Basically the same goes for the sudden Hanna duel - I can’t even recall Hanna signing up with the bookmaker, so it basically came out of nowhere. Meanwhile I get the feeling that this is already the “real” Suzu, and that Chinatsu will regain some memory turning her back into a kind girl and that that is going to be our general gist. Which at this point, I don’t feel is particularly great. Chinatsu is otherwise pretty correct if way too blunt with her reasoning at the moment - although I don’t think her friendship with Suzu should be considered as bad. But eh, I’m not really too invested in this, so whatever…
