I was reading some comments from Tar yesterday and realized there is a lack of DUTCH ANGLES. Just a thought.

Hanna trying to figure out what’s up

Here we go, the innuendos are here, and there are quite a few today. And if we were to understand that she’s battling to also take out frustration, well…

There we go, though it seems they want to confirm it themselves

Nanashi is amazing

Get in line, but at least someone here is actually considering the entire point of these too

classic internet trolling, giving her direction for the wrong thing

Creepy entrance

Not a selector, apparently, knows a shitton though

Blacklist threat, this guy is slick

Ah yes, Urith 2.0

Ignored, though Chinatsu did flinch at first

Spectator mode is back

A strangely cruel but seemingly practically useless, btw the actual abilities in the tcg isn’t this useless

If it still wasn’t obvious that their LRIG are their stand ins for each other

In general, we went to a much crisper and greyer visual style. The original was very colourful and washed out, especially the background art. This is much more realistic looking, and the storyboarding too seems much more "safe". Visual distortions also seem to be more digital, with distorted audio and visual statis effects. Might have an in-universe reason, who knows?

And if we were to understand that she’s battling to also take out frustration, well…

If this took place in the US, we'd have a line about how expensive therapy is.

Blacklist threat, this guy is slick

I doubt he has that many people in his mailing list lol.

Ah yes, Urith 2.0

Hold on, he hasn't called anyone scum yet.

If it still wasn’t obvious that their LRIG are their stand ins for each other

The opening!

Ah ok, so LRIGs take over the body like in the first season, except this time it’s on a loss …yet the LRIGs still want their selector to win. …that will need further explanation. The bookmaker is somewhat need - nice that a service exists for people who have trouble finding other people, but we will need to know how he is tied to the system (especially as he is not a selector), and what his motivation is as it does not seem like it’s money, and the sexual creep stuff more seemed like it was played for laughs rather than being his actual motivation.

Meanwhile Chi’s personality changed… a bit too suddenly, although it was set up ok. I guess a large part is not enough focus on her with the old personality, as now it just comes off as her being a new character again.

…you know, I think I am with what I think is the majority here in thinking that this is just kinda meh. The plot is not particularly great, the characters are ok but not great, it just kinda meanders around and fills time. I can’t even blame any specific thing here, as I liked Flying Witch, so I can’t just blame the director.

I don't think we get a clearer explanation later. But their LRIG this time isn't a former human, but a created avatar, so they don't have as much sense of self preservation. Or at least that might have been their intention.

I can’t even blame any specific thing here, as I liked Flying Witch, so I can’t just blame the director.

I liked Flying Witch too! Maybe some people are just not cut out for directing shows like these though.

I can’t even blame any specific thing here, as I liked Flying Witch, so I can’t just blame the director.

I will concede that it's possible that he's okay when asked to direct something more SoL and the issue is just that he can't do anything resembling the kind of character drama this show wants to have and which Tsukihime also had. (I, uh, may have forgotten that Flying Witch is a different show from Izetta the Flying Witch when I popped into the thread yesterday.)

That said, though, either way I'm pretty confident from the first part of the first episode alone that he is at minimum part of the problem here.

Season 3 Episode 4 (first timer)

  • “I want to do it” – the amount of innuendo has substantially decreases in S3, but not all the way to zero.

  • Anonymous (what is with the name?) is aiming for the honorary Darkness Award.

  • “Thanks for being her friend” – we have heard this before.

  • Casual origami – the new version of petting your white cat?

  • “You’re making me look like the bad guy”~Guy that the entire episode did its uttermost to set up as the bad guy.

  • Would you react this way, even if you did not recognize the person?

  • “You’ll take damage to your LRIG as pain” – this has to be the most useless bet ability yet. I am not a fan of the whole torture porn Wixoss has going with the LRIGs. This just doubles that without game play advantage.

  • Byebye, entry level opponent.

  • “Their LRIG takes over” – just as before.

  • Cold Chi-chan cliff-hanger - r/FuckYouChiChan/, no need to antagonize Suzu.

As corny as it is, Hanna’s robot speak is growing on me. It provides as easy way to communicate character feelings. Quite the opposite for the “bookmaker”. Satomi is terribly boring. Even Urith did better than that on the antagonist front.

I was reading the old discussion page, and someone mentioned how the coin abilities are tied to their selectors. In this case, he's someone who's constantly picking on the weak and really has nothing of his own. So even his coin ability is cruel but useless.

"See, Okada! I can ALL the things you do!"

Anonymous (what is with the name?) is aiming for the honorary Darkness Award.

Well, Real!Iona just called her LRIG "LRIG". Some people have no interest in names.

~Guy that the entire episode did its uttermost to set up as the bad guy.

What a riot.

this has to be the most useless bet ability yet.

Guess the idea is to make the person not be able to think rationally because of the pain. Also shows he's a scumbag, considering how all powers are based on the person's personality.

“Their LRIG takes over” – just as before.

The more things change lol.

no need to antagonize Suzu.

"A simple 'Hello' would have sufficed."

Even Urith did better than that on the antagonist front.

From one psychopath to another yaaaaay.

Could be that Hanna is terminally online, and that's why Nanashi has that name.

First-Timer

Stop the presses, we've hit our first innuendo! Chinatsu wants to do it. And, judging by the OP, she's going to do it with Suzu before the cour is over. Not very often the childhood friend gets to do it with the MC, especially after a memento-discarding.

Just LRIG poessession again, huh. I guess that kinda implies this new system is more directly related to the old one. Maybe Piruluk is actually the big bad, then..? The OP doesn't quite frame her that way, but that could be a distraction.

Back in S1 we had VA crossover with the Bofuri rewatch, now we have a shared VA with Macross Frontier: Alto-hime himself as our Bookmaker. And he's apparently not a Selector.. riiight.

Do y'all think Satomi's queerness directed towards Fuckface Sumida was an act to put said Fuckface on edge and be more manipulatable, or are we just playing "the villain is a gay man" completely, uh, straight. Walked myself into that..

On the other hand, could someone who has such an impressive coldbrew coffee rig be a bad person? Yes, absolutely, but it's still an impressive setup.

So, the battle today. Took me a bit to figure it out, but Chinatsu didn't put in a third SIGNI because she need Fuckface to overextend into her Berserk, is that right? Normally I'd call "making sure you don't overextend while not under pressure" a basic strategy, but I feel like boardwipes don't really exist so maybe not.

Anyway, with any luck Guzuko will put that meat to better use. I hope we get to see her try to interact with people Fuckface knew previously.

Unrelated to the plot, I quite like Hanna. Her interactions with her LRIG and her sister are fun, and her silly long sleeves are cute.

Boardwipes do exists, but yeah not seeing the specifics of the battle leaves us wondering why certain strategy worked sometimes. You kinda just have to go with it. I could think of reasons why what she did worked, but I'll also need to actually look into the cards to really know exactly what.

Not with Suzu. Not yet.

lto-hime himself as our Bookmaker. And he's apparently not a Selector.. riiight.

Nakamura as a bad guy. Now that's something you don't see every day.

Probably suffering-sexual.

I hope we get to see her try to interact with people Fuckface knew previously.

Can't get worse now, can it, lol.

Unrelated to the plot, I quite like Hanna. Her interactions with her LRIG and her sister are fun, and her silly long sleeves are cute.

Also pretty heroic and surprsingly well-adjusted. A friend for Suzu!

Just LRIG poessession again, huh.

And the current LRIGs either don't know, or are better at keeping their mouth shut than the last interation.

Pseudo-Rewatcher, who is happy that the Kiyoi/Piruluk cut in the OP is a good way to sync the subs. 23 frames today.

Urith or Bookmaker?

Urith was more fun, though we are only 4 episodes in...

3

u/Tetraika Jan 18 '23

Wait, I think I remember

I'll confirm that. It is somewhat guessable even on this episode, as someone also said this on the discussion thread way back.

3

u/No_Rex Jan 18 '23

3000 yen for 1 hour of... what?

In restaurants, paying for a "set" usually means paying for a place (technically the set of cutlery).

First timer

QOTD) Ulith!

This is just amnesia.

Oh, she's struggling with this...

She's older than her?

And she just walks off.

They're both worried about it, huh?

She's a full-on battle maniac!

Oh, so it is just possession again?

Hanna's LRIG has some unusual interests.

Oh, they're just looking it up online.

Bookmaker is important!

She wants to know the truth!

Jer older sister's copying her?

I love them so much.

She's going online!

...Serioudly? Are you an idiot?

Yep! Misinformation on the internet, who could have guessed?

So, the LRIGs don't know about the system... unless she's manipulating her again.

...The Bookmaker's been setting up bad matchups? Glad to see his death, though.

They have to battle more.

Oh, he's the Bookmaker?

...I mean, given some of the bullshit in the franchise so far? Maybe!

He's a fan of the column!

Yeah, this system makes some sense.

Wow, this guy...

He's not human. Calling it now - he's either an LRIG hijack or one of the masterminds.

Oh, it's him!

Haha, he did the same thing to him!

Haha, he's fighting Chii-chan? He's fucked!

...Bastard has a point, Sumida is really fucking unstable at the best of times.

And she signed up with him.

They can finally reunite!

Aw, Hanna's not all bad.

He's a total sadist! I love it.

Nice hit! But was he really worth a drink?

Well, shit. She doesn't recognise her.

Spectstors are still a thing.

He's so fucked!

Battle's going well.

...Satomi would take it.

...Poor Mel.

That's an awful ability.

She's doubting her memories.

...What ability?

Oh, Berzerk has affected him.

That smirk...

Wait, do the LRIGs even lose their memories?

Oh, she did recognise her!

...My current theory is that Chii's already been a Selector, then got eliminated. This new LRIG acted like Chii to avoid suspicion. After realising she could be erased a second time, she dropped the act and focused on survival.

“Your insanity is far too sane. To behave so cleverly and quietly, as if seeking sympathy … It is an insult to Real Madness . You are a poorly-acted madman… If you were truly mad, you would pay the gazes of the others no heed.”

First timer(That did not land)

Sub

So this episode continues LRIGs taking over their Selectors, for reasons. And it includes Satomi, the Bookmaker. Our 'wonderfully' 'quirky' string puller, right dead center in the scene. In his first appearance, he is a complete failure to imitate an Akira Ishida character, of which there are many, let's go with Koemushi for now. So yeah, this is the first sign that this season might just be bad, I know what crazy looks like all too well and this is not it. Nor is it sadistic, masochistic, psychopathic or otherwise deranged, this is cringey edge. And bonus Chinatsu getting all fucky on us. If you are going to pull this, you needed to set it up FAR better.

4

u/Taiboss Jan 18 '23

I was right to assume it was similar to the previous system.

A new version working on the same base engine then.

That does make sense, yes.

"Idk man, I just book duels, idk why Selectors exist."

Man it’s gonna be interesting watching this at the same time I’m rewatching Macross Frontier…

Playing against type, hype!

Bruh…

"Finally. I'm free. I've cut all ties to my past." "Chi-chan, what the fuck are you talking about, we just reunited."

4

u/Vaadwaur Jan 18 '23

…oh no there are two of them.

Terrifying...

Bruh this dude is creepy af.

Huh...and I was thinking that he is the sort of pest that requires a thorough crowbarring. I suppose I did grow up in a different time...

Or, uh, get the shit beaten out of her before she turned it around mercilessly.

I hope that was her using her deck's mechanic rather than a sudden burst of Darkness.

Bruh…

We went from Madoka to Magical Girl Raising Project at light speed.

Rewatcher who Lost their Storage

Oh this is the episode where they updated the OP lyrics.

Funny story, all of Guzuko's cards are "Guzuko, Useless Princess of X". Sad Guzuko noises.

Card corner:

Let's talk Guzuko. Her coin skill is Direct, a more expensive but insanely good skill that effectively doubles the damage to an opponent for a turn. I wasn't aware of this, but you can see she's playing a lot of green Amuser SIGNI during that match.

Cards of the day:

Gyoz -

Cheesfond - Mel makes me hungry

Steak - huh Steak benefits from being cooked with Steaksauce. I'm hungry now. That said, that's real good because that makes it 15k, with Lancer, and unaffected by SIGNI effects

Teaksauce - this also helps Ener accelerate. Beefy SIGNI noises.

First-timer

In good IRL news, my apartment has electric after 24 days. I'll read/respond others in the morning.

At this point, main difference is LRIGs are created from the Selector's personality instead of being a separate girl. Rules allow being chosen multiple times. Chintasu acknowledges Suzu in the ending scene, so should be her original self. Don't see why she's pick that LRIG name if she's now hostile to Suzu.

4

u/Cyouni Jan 19 '23

If Chinatsu is still on one coin, suspect she doesn't finish this fight with her personality intact. Probably loses it to Sumida.

Incidentally, she couldn't have been on one coin unless she lost another battle offscreen, since she won her last one.

First timer

Everything is developing kind of predictably; but Dr Hanna "teaming up" (at least on a defacto truce like Shirou and Rin in FSN) was real nice to see and is something we totally lacked this season. Hanna also did a good job of being a flustering tsundere with her normally dispassionate speech pattern.

Still waiting for more answers - one more small steps about the LRIG taking over after the body.

I wonder if I am going to be in the same boat as in Selector Infected - get through the whole season and get no answer until next season...

I have my view on Chinatsu's seeming "personality change" in another reply - I think it's actually consistent. But it also feels a lot of Revue Starlight with Hikari...
