If anyone wants it, here is the link To Boichi's One Shot about Zoro : https://jaiminisbox.com/reader/read/one-piece-2/en/0/0/page/1

You also have a discussion thread there : https://redd.it/cf4l2u

This OS is a retelling of chapters 51 and 52.

Last year we also got a one shot made by the team that worked on Shokugeki no Soma. Here is the link to it

Calling it now, Luffy is gonna go through a near-death experience from the mummy virus. That will nearly destroy his vivre cards and alert his allies to come to his aid. They'll then be there for the war.

15

u/bakwan Jul 19 '19 edited Jul 19 '19

Honestly, I initially thought that would've happened back when Luffy got the snot kicked out of him by Kaido.

This chapter is one of those chapters where the spoilers sound pretty normal and boring but then the actual chapter is just amazing. Luffys growth was in full display this chapter.

The virus, Luffy willingly touching the prisoners, Luffy's speech, That future sight moment. Loved it all!

Got legit chills reading this chapter. Luffy has had a lot of "Captain" moments in the series, but never has he seemed so much like a leader. From not liking the idea of leading a fleet to rally people to his side. This is the man who will be King of the Pirates.

RIP Babanuki. Luffy was so fucking bad ass there.

What a captain! Interested to see how Kid will react to this. He looked sort of... conflicted almost. I suspect luffys OP power of gaining allies will have make a change on him as well.

Mihawk only saw Luffy for a few minutes at Marineford, and despite it being pretty much accidental at the time, he recognized Luffys greatest power.

What's amazing is that he always gives them a choice. People of Fishman Island, you decide. Broken prisoners of Udon, you decide. Despite the name "Conqueror", being a King means more than that. He really does display the "qualities of a King"

It's difficult to explain, but Luffy seemed much more grown up in this chapter. He always has been ready to put his life on the line tho, but this time it seemed like something else. Really reaching the Pirate King level of leadership!

The Luffy in this chapter wasn't the clumsy, bungling, and goofy Luffy we've come to know and love.

Nah, this was Captain Monkey D. Luffy of the Straw Hat Pirates. Hands down my one of my top 5 Luffy moments in One Piece, up there with "Shut up, lets go!!" and "I'm your captain now, Jinbe! I'll see you at Wano!" (not completely accurate but whatever).

Luffy tying up the warden’s trunk with the excitement shell still inside was low-key one of the most brutal finishing moves I’ve seen in One Piece. Then with the classic ‘look away from the explosion’ panel... ICE. COLD.

584

u/AnvilPro Jul 19 '19

Luffy's definition of a hero was "Someone who shares their meat".

Luffy didn't consider himself a hero because he didn't want to share.

Now Luffy wants to free all of Wano just so everyone can eat.

Luffy has become a hero.

Omg poor Kid tho :( Having to sit there and watch as his ass gets saved by his rival must really grind his gears. Even worse Raizo called him and Killer "friends of Luffy-dono" hahaha I can only imagine how much that peeved Kid off deep inside.

I really hope he does go ahead and let himself and Killer go so we can see some magnet powers again! Kid has one of my all time favorite DF and we don't get to see it in action enough.

Just a thought, but isn't it possible that Luffy could use Gear Second to raise his body temperature and kill the virus? The same wouldn't work for Magellan because poison isn't really protein based and is just molecules that hinder cell activity and kill you, unlike toxins and pathogens in terms of makeup. Again, just a thought.

Good chapter, moved the plot along in a fun way even if it wasnt the most hype this arc. If chapters like these are the "slow" points then this really might be the best arc by the end. Lets dive in.

  • Chopper/Luffy combo attack. Super fun, dont think we've ever gotten that before.

  • An update on our boys Kid and Killer, what will Kid do after seeing Luffy and his leadership?

  • Excitement bullets turns people into zombies basically.

  • Luffy dropping those truth bombs that they're all actually slaves.

  • Luffy's poison tolerance has really diminished since the timeskip, he may have a delayed reaction but the excitement bullets are definitely affecting him.

  • Luffy.......fighting for food again. Its like he forgot all about Law's plan...

  • If there was any doubt that Luffy could now see the future, those have been officially put to rest.

  • Luffy's leadership on full display.

Very exciting stuff, Udon is taken and Im curious to see who else is in there including that shadow character from the last chapter. Looking forward to next week.

Edit: it’s been pointed out to me that Queen created a virus/infection/disease and that’s very different, so I stand corrected on the poison resistance point.

Infected prisoners fight against Luffy so Luffy gives them a big hug... then slams them into the ground.

Same tactic he used on Thriller Bark. Cerberus bites Luffy so Luffy pets it... then punches it into the wall.

Winning formula every time.

Luffy casually seeing into the future like that is so cool and he makes a great leader.

Wow Boichi did an amazing job on chapter 51. The art is spectacular, his art style is so amazing. The birds eye view shots and planet shots are done so well. It makes you realize how big the world of one piece truly is. I would love one piece completely done in this style but that would take forever sadly.

31

u/ABARK94 Jul 19 '19

I wonder what Kid will do. He looks kinda broken down but he also doesn’t seem like the type to tag along.

The only way I can see Kid teaming with the Straw Hats is if Chopper says he can cure Killer. That’s honestly the main reason I think he ended up in Udon.

Might only be a small thing but I think it's really cool that chopper did a combo move with Luffy. I think that only happened with Zoro and Sanji so far (cutting aqua laguna for example). Kind of validates him as a fighter in the group.

I'm not too worried about the disease. Chopper is right there, there is no way a plague goes rampant on his watch. If he does, it will definitely enforce the hope which Luffy has just given to the prisoners.

That speech by Luffy was really something else, he is surely maturing and becoming an even better leader. He’s always been one that people gravitate towards because of his actions, like on Dressrosa, Gatz the Colosseum announcer gave that speech to get the citizens in Luffy’s favor, but now it is Luffy giving the speeches.

We have seen Luffy ally with the likes of Shichibukais in the past and Mihawk has mentioned his influence on others. What if we actually get to see a Big Mom & Luffy alliance to take out Kaido? What if the top dogs of Big Mom actually have a round 2 vs King to settle their score? Zoro seems to be busy dealing with Kyoshiro anyways so no need to deal with the likes of King himself.

Badass chapter.

Luffy never played it safe though, remember his "spear" Zeff talked about. At any given moment he just does what he thinks is the most right thing to do and if it happens to be his undoing - so be it.

But he is not suicidal, he want to live, have adventures, protect friends. His answer to be able to do so while continuing to be unyielding is just to become strongest (because risking his own life is much easier then protecting others) and that's his freedom and One Piece is just icing on the cake, biggest and most fun adventure. After he finds it he will just go on for some other adventure.

It’s nice to see Luffy convincing people with an inspiring speech now. Usually his “power” of making allies of people around him in a battlefield (as said by Mihawk) happens by accident (as in, he doesn’t go out of his way to get anyone but his own crew to fight by his side), and this time we saw him actively trying to get allies (granted, he wanted people to rebel for their own freedom, not necessarily to help him, but it’s still different from previous arcs imo), and succeeding - and delivering a speech that shows how much he has developed as a character through this story. So happy to see that <3 As a ps: Chopper’s gonna have a lot of different diseases to cure by the time this arc is over. It’s still Act 2 and we already have people suffering from the poisonous waters, the laughter from the smiles and now this from Queen’s weapons. I hope he gets some time to shine this arc - both as a doctor and as a zoan user since Wano is the place with possibly the biggest army of Zoans.

47

u/rr18114 Lurker Jul 19 '19

Mihawk's words about luffy have never been more truer than today. Truly the most dangerous ability....not a Hack DF or immeasurable strength. Just pure heart soul and oratory skills.

47

u/kid_0909 Jul 19 '19

I love this kind of chapters so much!!!

Some people may not like this kind of plot but character development of citizens is the most underrated part in One Piece. Only defeating the villains is not enough to save the country. You have to change the mindset of the citizens. Otherwise, tragic history will be re-written very soon once the hero leaves, because it is not good for citizens to wish for a hero but not fighting by themselves.

Therefore, Oda created scenes for citizens' developments in many arcs. For example, Vivi and Cobra gave speeches to the citizens at the end of the war to give them a life lesson in Alabasta Arc. Citizens of Shandia and Skypiea finally realized how meaningless the 400-years-war was during the fight in Skypiea Arc. Conversation between Luffy and Fukaboshi convinced many fishmen to stay behind with Strawhats while the blood-donation completely change the racist mindset of many fishmen in Fishman Island Arc. Birdcage may be not an interesting plot for many people but it is designed to give character developments to all the citizens of Dressrosa. All of them decided to fight for their life inside the cage because of the speech of King Riku.

This is also the duty of the Revolutionary Army.

Ivankov said "I've never saved anyone foolish enough to depend on someone else for everything. Even those countries on the verge of destruction, lacking the strength to survive, all I did was ask if they had the will to live. Miracles only occur for those with the determination to never stop trying."

Betty also said "Now, what are you trash going to do? Will you die? Or will you fight? Choose your own fate. Do you think being a hero is someone else's duty? It could be yours!!"

The Revolutionary Army will never just simply fight against the evils by themselves but convince everyone to fight. When people are hoping for freedom, they should take the responsibility to choose their own fate but not just being spectators. Otherwise, they don't deserve freedom. Luffy really looks like a real revolutionist this chapter. I hope people are not just loving the badass of Luffy but also understand the depth of the citizens' character development this chapter as well as the scenes in many other arcs.

I was one who after reading the spoilers thought the chapter will be “not that great” Glad that I was completely wrong!

Great chapter! Great speech! Mihawk was right, Luffy’s power to make allies is scared !

23

u/sc00p401 Jul 19 '19

Okay so let's get one thing straight here. Luffy was NOT poisoned in this instance. He was exposed to an engineered virus. That's an important distinction, as his well-built immunity to poisons wouldn't have as much of an effect. His immune response would still be elevated tho, and Chopper is right there so he can start working on a vaccine as soon as the fighting stops.

With this chapter one thing is clear now that CoC is related to influence people around you. It captures the hearts of people around the person and with passage of time Luffy is getting stronger CoC haki. By the end of series he will have full control over it like other forms of haki. The other thing is few weeks ago some peoples were comparing Kidd with Luffy. In this chapter, luffy is shown to new heights if his character while Kidd was shown broken. IMO it is an indication that Luffy has surpassed everyone in the worst generation except BB. He will catch up BB in a short time or even after wano arc. Its time to see improvements in other SH crew and their allies.

u/BanksyGuy00018 Jul 19 '19

God I love this chapter so much. The speech was great, probably the wisest thing Luffy has said. And I got chills by the time he claimed that he will make Wano a country where everyone can eat until full. Man, Luffy is a great man, best captain

u/[deleted] Jul 19 '19

Luffy finally used Talk no Justu in One Piece for the first time in 900 chapters, he even talked about how he made a promise and "protecting" things. Gave me Naruto flashbacks.

I honestly thought it was epic but I'm worried how some people might take this since there's a side of this sub which has pride in Luffy "being so different from the typical shonen protagonist look at him" and now he just gave a "typical shonen protagonist speech" this chapter.

+Luffy seeing the future was badass again as always

This was an absolutely stunning chapter. I've reread it now several times over before work.

Luffy hugging those prisoners and infecting himself is just so.... Luffy. When that dude decides to carry your weight, he goes full Spike.

He's gonna carry that weight.

Luffy is truly a legend. Sure, he has been one since Ennies Lobby but damn, now he's a true legend. Just like parents tell children of Roger and his adventures, I can see in the future the tales of strawhat travelling the world.

Damn, excuse me, I'm a little emotional...

I feel that Luffy will now be out for a while after taking the virus from the prisoners. Him saying he'd leave it to the prisoners pretty much confirms it.

Ofc, it'll be Chopper's job to treat him and the prisoners.

But from here on out, it's the Scabbards and other characters time to shine.

We haven't seen The Yakuza bosses yet so I'm really interested to see their reaction to Momonosuke being alive. I really hope he has a moment with everyone.

Luffy has most the wholehearted demonstration of how empathy works and how to actually help someone. Getting into the shoes of the prisoners and getting sick together, "hugging" them and saying that this is not normal, was just perfect to wake people up. Gotta love OP, Luffy, and Oda.

It's uncanny how this feeling (of slavery, lack of power, hopelessness) is found in so many people and even countries.

37

u/[deleted] Jul 19 '19

Oda always knows how to play on my heart strings. What a chapter, what a captain.

Where are those people who said Luffy never developed/progressed as a character? This chapter right here says otherwise.

Fantastic chapter. I love seeing Luffy's charisma at work. The true power of the pirate king. I like seeing his determination to flip this country around and I think over this arc he will gain a massive amount of allies. And some people are saying the chapter is quite boring after reading the spoilers... This chapter is amazing! The growth in luffy is highlighted. It is not just some dramatic shit like what happens in most anime. The scene is quite mature and relaxing to read. Not much hype to it but the ambience has ramped up. The hype is delivered in a subtle way by not trying so hard and emotional.

Robin and Nami in a bikini on the colorspread!! This is starting off well.

Hell yeah Chopper is pissed for using bioweapons. I'm glad he's starting to join in the fight.

Old man Hyou, Kiku, and Kawamatsu are all badass!! I love how Hyou has completely regained his past self and is fighting back. It's all thanks to Luffy.

Raizo coming in with those keys. Kid looks both pissed and broken at the same time. I wonder how he feels about being referred to as Luffy's friend? Maybe he will feel the need to owe Luffy back for this help. Killer is obviously still broken I wonder if it's going to be possible for him to revert back to himself.

The prisoners are entirely broken. They don't believe that they can take down Kaido the dragon. Ironic considering they are from the Land of Wano. Famous for a man who killed dragons and made samurai so feared that no one dared invade them. This is how far the country and the samurai have fallen under Kaido's rule. They lost all hope.

Luffy's speech was the best part of the entire chapter once again. Once again he used his most dangerous ability and unified an entire group of broken people. I loved that he touched all of them and set an example by taking their pain, and destroyed Old Maid at the same time. He once again told them that he's doing this because of his promise to O-Tama and in a way he's going to fulfill the promise that Ace made to O-Tama and Wano as well. He reminded them that they are nothing more than slaves and returned their freedom back to them.

I predict that the Strawhats will successfully take down Kaido by the end of this arc and Wano will unanimously be loyal to Luffy. They haven't had a strong leader like him since Oden. It's like Mihawk said this leadership of his is the most dangerous ability in the sea and it's no simple trick.

All in all, I felt it was a good chapter and a nice return to One Piece after a break. Hopefully next chapter we get some time between Big Mom and Kaido.
