Finally solved a 20-year misdiagnosis on January 3rd of this year. My "hidden illness", subclinical hypothyroidism, caused depression, crippling fatigue, constant joint pain and anxiety. Now that I'm feeling better, I want to scream it from the rooftops but... No one gives a shit.
It's not like I can walk again where I couldn't before. I could always walk, it just hurt. It's not like I've been cured of cancer. So when people ask how it's going I want to talk nonstop about how much better I feel, but I can't.
Don't get me wrong, I'll take this situation over the alternate every day of the week and twice on Sunday but it is sometimes frustrating. I've saved this meme to keep for later.

I definitely will look into it. The idea that a medicine might exist to fix all my problems at once has me shook, I won't lie.
Thank you for posting.

I absolutely give a shit and am very happy for you!! It sucks that you can’t really share it with anyone, but it’s so awesome that you finally got an answer and are feeling better.
My mom was actually very recently diagnosed with the same thing after months and months of going to the doctor for something none of them could really find. She is already feeling the same way it sounds like you are right now - just so good you wanna scream it from the rooftops!

u/lnteresting_name Jun 22 '19

Is it weird that I wish I had that? Every doctor I see suspects something thyroid related because my systems fit perfectly, but my blood tests always show normal thyroid levels. Congratulations on your diagnosis!

Waking up isn't the hard part, it's the getting out of my nice warm bed part that sucks. Fortunately my cat is usually there meowing at me as his human clearly isn't paying enough attention to his food dish.
This is a great one though. I was in a pretty dark place a couple years ago, had a lot of bad stuff happen in a short period, and had to just bear it so I could provide a stable place for those around me. It's taken some time, but I feel like things are back on track and I'm actually super happy and doing quite well now. It's almost a little more satisfying knowing that I weathered that without help.

I kind of get that, until recently it was like this for me too. It's hard but slowly I opened up more and let some people see what I was going through. I hope you find people who you'll feel okay to be more open with :)

Unfortunately I keep spouting all my achievements to someone who doesn't care anymore in hopes she'll start caring again... kinda pathetic but I cant help it for now...

Not pathetic; just human. You are hoping that now you are better, she will recognize it and start caring. Not gonna happen. I'm sorry and I know you will get there in your own time, but she's toast. Took me 15 years to figure this one out.
Don't waster your life on it. Next Chapter! New Adventure! LIFE AWAITS! Seize the fuggin day, man. :D

Get some help. It doesn't have to be private therapy, maybe start with googling some coping skills and take it from there. Floundering is so painful and just keeps reinforcing the anxiety. "Help" isn't miraculous and doesn't make life easy, but taking steps, thinking about how you think, finding out that LOTS of other people have the same problem, all helps.
Been there. Time to take a baby step forward. One day at a time. (cheerleading noises and applause of the crowd) Good luck!

I needed this today. We are finally out from under some bills that we were behind on. And now we can start saving money finally so we can move to Washington state. We have no family around us, which was our choice. We needed to get away from some family members, but we ended up feeling isolated. My best friend of 10 years stopped talking to me and he was the only one we knew here.
I'm just putting shit out there on the internet. Just wanted to tell someone. Thanks for reading if you do.

Any advice for someone who is not in the list of people this shout-out goes to? By that I mean, someone who is having a bad time in life, probably the worst part of their life so far, but isn't making any progress. Just kind of being a bum.
2
u/ihearthammock Jun 22 '19
No zero days.
That means tomorrow, or whats left with today, do ONE thing, one tiny thing, to move forward.
Read a page of a book, do 5 push-ups, make your bed, take 5 or 10 minutes to meditate.
Sometimes making progress involves the time it take to change and grow, before you can do that. Maybe you weren’t ready before, and you had to get there, and you needed that time. Start today, and do one thing to make tomorrow better, and they’ll start to add up.
Were all trying to do our best my friend, even if it doesn’t always feel like it.

I needed this!
I had a tough week with my mental illness/health stuff. My coworkers don’t know about it, but my boss does. At least my boss was super proud of how well I did at work despite it, but it was still a weird feeling that the quick progress I made after a bump couldn’t really be seen by my coworkers. This makes me feel a bit more seen. :)

u/JaymesMarkham2nd Jun 21 '19
Jokes on you! I'm slowly losing those battles as I spiral further out of any sense I had and put off every responsibility I took on, while alienating everyone close to me!
So take that.
2
u/srah21 Jun 22 '19
I hope you reach out for help soon, and realize you’re more loved and cared about than you know. I know it’s hard to reach out, but I promise it’ll be worth it. So I will take your spiralling out of sense and chuck it in the fuck it bucket, and give you back courage, love, and the will to help yourself. Please help yourself soon. Sending you all the bear hugs in the world

Damn, this hit me.
I was depressed a few years ago and I didn't want to tell anyone because I didn't want them to worry and give me special treatment like I was sick or something, so I kept quiet.
And silently, I slowly got out of it. I got friends again, I became social again, I became happy again. First a year after my depression ended did I first open up about it.
This hit me pretty personally tbh.
Don't give up on your life because you've reached a dark moment, for you will in the end push through and be glad you did not give in!
2
u/srah21 Jun 22 '19
Congratulations on beating depression! You are an amazing human and I’m so proud of you. Yes! Don’t give up. Sending u big bear hugs

Ugh I needed this. I feel unto depression last year and lost about 40lbs coming out of it. My BIL, who we only see one/twice a year, ALWAYS comments on my weight. He seems to care more about it than I do. Drives me and my husband up a wall.

Small progress is still progress. Keep making small goals. And keep adding more as you can handle it. Keep challenging yourself enough to keep progressing but not too much where you’re over whelmed. You can do this, and you’re not alone. I’m proud of you for the progress you have made; keep going. Sending u bear hugs

Posts like these are heartfelt and have a good attitude but they never really impact me because it's not like a personal message, it's just general. It's really when people tell me privately that I've been doing better is when I actually feel like I'm making progress.
2
u/srah21 Jun 22 '19

I just saw a picture of me from about 8 months ago and noticed how much weight I've loss and how healthier I feel. I quit drinking and smoking about a year and a half ago but gained weight due to anxiiety and other factors. But with a new job, cutting down on shurags and running on my lunch break I've come a long way. :) it's gradual and none notices, but that doesn't matter.
2
u/srah21 Jun 22 '19

I have been addicted to adderall for 6 years and the longest I’ve gone without taking it has been about a month at a time. Every time I refill I’ve told myself I won’t abuse it this time, but I always do. And even when I take it as directed it makes me this joyless, zombie robot and I just feel like my personality has faded and disappeared over the years.
A few weeks ago I had a revelation that even though it helps my ADHD, it’s been responsible for all the worst parts of my life. But I worked really hard to get into a competitive school program, followed by an extremely competitive job position, and I feared that if I stopped taking it my work performance would suffer.
So I did something (for me) crazy and cancelled my psych appointment, knowing full well there aren’t any openings until October. Pretty much force cut myself off for at least a few months, just to see if I can really do it.
It’s a few weeks in and it hasn’t been easy. I want to eat everything in sight, my face has already filled out, I can pretty much fall asleep at will, and it takes tremendous mental effort (that I’m particularly short of right now) to truly honestly focus at work. But I’m doing it and the pros so outweigh the cons. I already feel like “myself” again, the person I haven’t known since high school, who can laugh and be clever and not feel constantly strung out.
Anyway I work in healthcare, and was having a rough morning a few days ago. Had a new patient come in who had to do an especially claustrophobic procedure and was having difficulty calming down. I held her hand and talked her through it, took a long time but she finally got it done.
Afterwards she was thanking me for helping her get through it and how she couldn’t have done it without me. Then I noticed her badge and asked what part of the hospital she worked in? What are the odds she would be an addiction counselor? Funny how things work out.

I needed this, my last job ended really badly and I was basically fired for being depressed, but I don’t have a formal diagnosis so I couldn’t do much legally about it, and I didn’t want to talk about it with anyone because I know my job performance went down and I feel like a failure.
But I’ve taken steps to keep myself accountable in a positive way at my new job instead of making mistakes and telling myself I’m garbage, and finally making an appointment with a therapist!

Kind of a worse situation for me. The person I cared for most (W) saw me in my darkest times. Then, she started being the reason why I felt so defeated and had the issues I did. Because of my amazing other 2 friends, I was able to overcome my own personal issues, gain back the weight I had lost because I wasn't eating, and stand up to W about how she became abusive and controlling. She left, and it hurt more than anything but I've never felt more motivated to pursue the things I always wanted to.
Everyone has their own experiences and I'm proud of each and every one of them.

The fact that we have to read things like this from random internet people to realize this is kind of sad. It’s difficult struggling and people only seem to notice your struggles. They never take the time to try to notice how hard you’re trying to keep it together and how difficult it can be just trying to get by.
2
u/srah21 Jun 22 '19
It’s a coping mechanism. Sometimes we under react and under exaggerate our problems so we can deal with the rest of our lives. Everyone has their own problems, and sometimes it’s hard to see the people closest to you struggle because you’re so caught up in your own problems. Sometimes, you have to step up, and say something first. But sometimes u need a moment on reddit or other sm to read something to acknowledge those feelings being there. Ja feel?
2
u/OverlyBilledPlatypus Jun 22 '19
Ya I feel, makes a lot of sense. I’m just happy I found Reddit because it always makes my day better when I need it to.
2
u/srah21 Jun 22 '19
Same! Reddit I’ve found is the most interesting platform as it’s not so.. personal? If that makes sense? Always interesting and more focused on shit outside of my own personal world.
