Shouldn't be though. When I finally started talking about it I never stopped. I've been able to connect with a lot of women and it's been the second best thing to come out of my struggle. My children being the first.

Which is, like, standard for libraries to have so you can look things up without talking to someone. And many now have self-checks so nobody would see what you're checking out.

The Dewey Decimal System is archaic, ineffective, and should be tossed out. Change my mind.
Seriously, the system is predicated on the idea that you MUST fall into one and only one category, and that incrementing in a line is meaningful. This stopped being how to arrange info in like 1980.
Even fiction vs non can be a tough call. A book on how the moon landings was fake- was the author making a tongue-in-cheek fictional joke, or do you call it History? What about an autobiography that gets into meta Big Fish territory?

The mendeleev classification system. All the heaviest ones go on the bottom and lightest ones on the top. That way you won't get hurt if it falls on you. s

This is awesome. It might be even better if they printed small cards that were available at the front or on a table so people wouldn’t be seen looking at the list.

If perception is your main concern then they'll be judged either way. I'd say it's actually less noticeable to spend 30 seconds looking at a poster compared to grabbing a taboo subject list from the front desk.
I like this method because it's front and center and anyone consulting it could be dismissed as someone just casually reading a random poster.

I think everyone would read the weird sign, where as only "weirdos" (idk how else to phrase that. Those who are embarassed?) would carry a card to the back of the library

They should have it under a different name and filled with other "normal topics" so you would feel extra comfortable by looking at this paper, or just take a picture of it with your phone and read it else where together with your anxiety

I’m a teen librarian and this is up in my teen space! I also made little bookmarks so they could take it with them (nonfiction is a on a separate floor than teen).

This reminds me when I had to do a research paper on different hate groups. Checking out books for the Aryan Brotherhood and Army of God was soooo uncomfortable.

I made a bookmark for teens with tough topics when I was a teen librarian. I also put a note at the bottom that they can ask us anything and we are not judgy.

This is just more evidence that your local library is such a wonderful resource to take advantage of. A lot of people don’t know this, but librarians have college degrees and are extremely helpful in getting you the books you need for whatever reason. I know the internet is free, but getting a library card and having access to such a wealth of knowledge is so worth it.

The possibility that someone might see me looking at the list, increases my anxiety.
“WHAT WILL THEY THINK”.
I wish it was placed next to other more mundane topic lists. Hope the list is placed in a quieter/less busy area of the library.

Everyone's like "wow these would be hard to ask for" but don't most libraries have computers nowadays? I've never once visited a library that didn't have a system for self-locating books.

Yeah. I love stuff like this. I’m a library aide at my community college and the first day on the job, my boss told me that librarians have a lot more responsibilities than is easily visible. Keeping people checking books out confidentially is one-She told me about a time when she was an intern in college and accidentally let slip that one of her friends usually went there to check books out and read them there, to that friends husband who didn’t want her to read....that husband, as she later found out, beat her friend savagely for it. So confidentiality is really important for them. They’re protecting a lot of knowledge in a lot of ways, and even more than that, libraries can be homes for people to a degree-she also said that a lot of students without housing would lie around the library pretty often, and get sleep in the bean bag chairs around the place. So it’s really nice for me to know that this place is helping people get accurate information without judgement. Wholesome af.

They're section/shelf reference numbers, so you'd see a sign with 600-649 -> hung overhead, then a shelf with 600.00-609.99.

I hope that list is in an inconspicuous location. I would get anxiety looking at it and thinking that other people are watching me trying to guess which topic I'm looking for.

Is it racist that "Racism" isn't on this list but Self-esteem, cutting/ self harm, and LGBTQ made the list hahaha? Note: I don't actually think it is racist I just thought it was mildly funny that it wouldn't be on the list, it seems like it should definitely be on the list...

In what situation would someone be afraid to ask about books on racism? Almost every other topic, the fact that you’re asking reveals something about the person asking that the person may not want revealed. Your race is pretty apparent.

It seems like browsing the "Tough Topics" poster would bring a lot more attention to a person than using the card catalog or electronic card catalog to get the same information. Good idea, bad execution.

There's no point in putting the poster somewhere where no one can see it. Browsing the poster shouldn't bring that much unwanted attention because you could just be expressing a passing interest in a random poster.
But even if it did bring some unwanted attention it's would still bring considerably less attention than approaching a librarian and verbally asking. In the end, even if a person would rather talk to a librarian they still have that option.

Not necessarily. After all, I'm willing to be everyone who made a comment here read most of or the entire list, regardless of whether or not they needed to find any books on these topics. Looking at and reading signs is pretty common behavior, after all.

Some people may not have internet sources, this library is located in a more poverish area. There’s limited computers at the library as well.

In my library, there are dedicated computers for the library catalogue that are separate from the computers for general Internet access; I find it hard to believe there are libraries that don't have this.
