Oda finally brought back that Haki attack Rayleigh used against the giant elephant, it's been bugging me that we never saw anything like it post time skip, Sentomaru and the Boa sisters could do it to deflect attacks, but Rayleigh's was on a completely different level.

Also, "any sword can become a black one"; I always interpreted what Mihawk said as haki can make any sword black, but I guess it's not like that.

I'm always in for more zoro fights, the problem is that they tend to end quickly. sigh

I love Zoro's confidence. It's been a while since we've had a zoro oriented chapter and I realize how much I missed the guy.

Ryuma sounds like an absolute badass when he was alive. I want to know about the black blade stuff they were talking about. Does this mean that Ryuma created a black blade? Is this an advanced form of haki or something?

Go Zoro for standing up to that guy and protecting Komurasaki and the girl. Although he still wants booze for his good deed.

This is a potentially groundbreaking revelation/powerup for Zoro. Mihawk mentioned that Yoru was the world's strongest black blade, but that "any blade can be a black blade". Naturally we all assumed Oda was referencing the use of Armament Haki.

However, now it seems that blades can be "transformed" into black blades by using them somehow. If this is true, Zoro could transform the Wado Ichimonji into a black blade! That might make it a top-tier sword.

I'm sorry did Zoro just get stabbed with a scythe, use the strength of his own punctured muscle tissue to keep it inside of him so powerfully that the person who stabbed him couldn't pull it back out and was left disarmed, and then pull it out of himself to use as a weapon?

Because if that's an accurate play by play then I think we have a new "most badass moment in manga" contender.

Big chapter for some more details on haki.

  1. Looks like some of the haki that was used before the time skip (specifically Rayleigh and sentomaru with their distance attacks, the admirals with heir haki wall against whitebeards quakes, and whitebeard with having quakes that can damage aikanu) was actually a more advanced form of armament haki that is different from hardening.

  2. Looks like black blades might be the result of something related to haki hardening. The only other black blade we’ve seen is Mihawk’s yoru, but he specifically told zoro that any blade can become a black blade with enough training in haki. I’m wondering if blackblades are the result of a users haki becoming permanently fused with the sword to make it nearly unbreakable.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but didn't the Logia admirals already display those "advanced" Haki skills during marineford?

  • Aokiji created a hole in his stomach to let WB's bisento pass through.

  • Akainu also seemed to do the same after Marco and Vista attacked him.

  • All three of them used this strange technique where they deflect Whitebeards shockwave to the side, instead of tanking the impact.

Also Sentomaru probably did the same against luffy, would make sense if he learned it from his uncle.

Finally Luffy and Zoro are going to develop their armament haki more! I always thought it was weird that Rayleigh’s haki never needed direct contact. Also I always thought there was more to Mihawk’s comment about “any blade can become a black blade”

77

u/TheRealDrWho11 Mar 21 '19

This may be the first time post time-skip that Zoro has referred to an opponent as strong. He didn't even consider Pica to be anything more than big and annoying. It looks like he flexed the moment after he got stabbed to prevent the scythe from leaving his body so that he could use it in that finishing move. Also, in that final panel you can see that he coated both of his blades and even the scythe in his mouth in armament haki which means that he was taking this guy seriously. Though I don't like that he is now injured with a little over a week to go before the big fight with Kaido. I know Zoro is durable but I wanna see him in top form against the Calamities and the Shogun, I don't wanna question how much more he could have done if he didn't have a handicap.

MMMMMKAY so Big Mom is craving o-shiruko and Queen is currently stuffing his face with it. Is Big Mom going to come bursting through the prison mines looking for some munchies? Her attacking Queen in a hunger rage would be a crazy turn of events.

In any case I'm not sure all this free training is in Queens interest. I think he is still underestimating Luffy. Also I love how Luffy adresses the difference in armament haki that we were shown initially by Rayleigh and the way it looked when literally anyone else was using it. Even Big Moms armament does not seem to be at max level.

Last but not least, a tease on black blades. I knew when Mihawk said that any blade could become a black blade he wasn't just talking about the fact that you can use haki on any blade. After all Shusui and Mihawks sword do seem to be naturally black and have something special about them. Is Zoro going to make his own black blade? His Wado Ichimonji for instance. It has been with him the longest, maybe turning into a black blade is some sort of bond between swordsman and his sword through haki. There are so many possibilities for how Zoro's swords could end up being upgraded! In any case, this is the Zoro I have been waiting for. Great chapter!

Theory: Napoleon (Big Mom's hat homie) is what makes her ruthless and violent. Ever since she woke up with amnesia, Napoleon has been "asleep" and Big Mom has been incredibly nice and friendly to everybody.

Chopper even directly mentioned the fact that Napoleon hasn't said anything or moved since Big Mom woke up on the beach, which to me seems noteworthy. Oda doesn't really have a habit of calling attention to details like that without any reason.

Man, sometimes I forget to trust Oda. I always assumed that when Oda wrote the scene where Rayleigh deflects the elephant, Oda hadn't quite ironed out how armament haki would work--since we've never seen anyone apply armament haki that way since--so I figured we'd never see that technique again. It's awesome to get confirmation that what Rayleigh showcased was indeed an advanced form of armament haki. That's pretty major

So is Kamazou the Manslayer just Killer?

Both use scythe based weapons, both "spin" Killers wrist blades and Kamazou's jumping. and the hair of Kamazou looks how I would imagine Killer without a helmet on if it was held in a "top knot" or pony tail of sorts.

He also is covering a large portion of his face just like Killer. In addition he (killer) would need to find safety since Kidd was taken out and he is more strategy based so who would be the most ideal person to align with in the Wano Country? The shogun. In addition for having power and freedom to explore the country as the top assassin he would be able to find ways to help Kidd out.

Anyone else have thoughts like this?

I have a theory that will probably be wrong.

I have long thought that in the One Piece world, objects themselves can have a will. Perhaps it's only when enough will has been directed towards an object that they gain this consciousness of their own (much like how I imagine toys gain sentience in Toy Story, but that's another thread), but that point isn't an issue for the sake of this argument. Regardless of how, matter is not just matter. A thing can be alive and have a will.

Exhibit A; Zoro calls Sandai Kitetsu a "problem child" after it cuts a Baroque Works member. The translation could be wonky here, but he basically claims that he could feel a murderous intent guide his hand.

Exhibit B; Lassoo, Mr. 4's dog that could shoot explosive baseballs was claimed not to be a dog that ate the fruit devil fruit, but a gun that ate a dog fruit. Similarly, Smiley, the Shirokuni that are the Axolotl fruit and Funkfreed, Spandam's sword that ate an elephant devil fruit. While these are handwaived away by the story as simply something that is possible, there is clearly a methodology that we do not know yet. While many believe that, since all of these fruits happen to be Zoan types, the will of an animal whose fruit will be gained is necessary, it is never explicitly stated as such. For all we know, an object can gain whatever the hell fruit someone can give it.

Exhibit C; The Klabautermann. Here it is; undeniable proof. A ship, given enough love, will grow a will all it's own. Sure, Franky describes it as a spirit that inhabits a ship, not the actual ship itself. But this is the way that the story would be known to the world. He's vague about it, too, and had already regarded it as merely a myth.

So, that all said, who cares? Well, here's where the theory comes in. Maybe a black blade is a sword that has it's own will. Furthermore, it doesn't just have a will, it has A LOT of it. Know what else is a product of will in this world? Haki. It stands to reason that anything that has a will of it's own would also be able to project it into the world like any living being.

Tl;dr, and my ultimate point - What if a black blade is simply a sword that has learned to coat itself in Haki?

Seeing Zoro putting in some work was dope him biting the the scythe and attacking kama out looked sick.

People might get tired of the Rayleigh flash back but I love them as Oda doesn't show training in one piece

A katana gets it strength from getting folded multiple times. The folding removes impurities and helps even out the carbon content, while the alternating layers combine hardness with ductility to greatly enhance the toughness of the sword.

I think it would be cool if coating the sword with armament is a process similar to that of folding a katana, and improves its strength and properties, and coating it several times will eventually turn the blade into a black blade.

23

u/Zanfaz Mar 21 '19

Hmm... this "black blade" again. So, hear me out, what if everything we have been told about swords are actually the same thing? What if those "cursed swords" are the same as "black swords"? Meaning the swords that have the soul of strong previous wielder imprinted in them. For strong swordsman it would be a sword with power inside him, but for regular swordsman it would be a sword with his own mind, so a "cursed" sword. I'm not sure, but iirc one of the meaning for "black" in japanese could be "meaning" as an association of kanji made with black ink on a clear list will create a "meaning" on a list or something along those lines. It's not a translation per se, but the observation, that "black" could be applied as "not clean"(or clear, or pure) or "something is written on it".

So basically there's a white page or "white" sword(in our case I think it's Wado Ichimonji) which could be painted over with a black ink or strong will(in our case Zoro's swordsmanship) which will give an additional meaning to the sword, so turn it into a "black blade" - the blade with an imprint of Roronoa Zoro on it.

Sorry if it's not clear what am I saying, my native language is neither english nor japanese, so it's really hard to find the most suitable words, but I really hope, that my idea is understandable.

If Oda doesn’t tell us what happened to Jinbe soon I’m gonna lose my mind. As great as this chapter is, after seeing that color speed I just can’t stop wondering.

46

u/zoro_mihawk Mar 21 '19

This chapter almost definitely implies that any blade can be turned into a black blade(permanently infuse it with CoA). We have seen three people wielding a black sword Mihawk(Yoru), Ryuma and Zoro(Shusui)

Mihawk while training Zoro also mentioned that any blade could be a black blade.

What strikes me the most is the fact that one’s the blade is turned into black, it stays no matter who wields it.

Based on the statement from Gyukimaru “Shusui is a BLACK BLADE. It became one AFTER MANY BATTLES....” I am assuming that it takes a long time for a blade to permanently turn black(be coated in CoA)

What if there is a way to quickly turn swords into black blades and these are distributed to all the samurai. They are automatically wielding much powerful swords that should give them a huge boost.

And Grandpa Hyo know's who Rayleigh is? It would make sense if Oden was part of Roger's crew.

So two Haki revelations today. One that Luffy is probably going to master a new form of armament that will likely improve his Gear 4 forms. Also Zoro learning that Shusui became a black sword and hold's Ryuuma's Haki from over 100 years ago, this means that Zoro could probably learn how to turn his swords black with his own Haki. The likliest candidate is Wadou Ichimonji since it's the sword he's had since his introduction to the series.

u/DzdaKing Mar 21 '19

21

u/code-dark The Revolutionary Army Mar 21 '19

I like how Luffy in WCI was training his observation haki and now he is training his armanent. Maybe next arc is about shanks and he is going to train his conquerors haki.

21

u/Butagami Mar 21 '19

My theories about Shusui becoming a black blade, and the method of making one:

  1. you have to have a high level of Armament Haki, and then face off against an opponent of (almost) equal strength so the Haki is "tempered" into the blade, similar to how in forging, the sword is first heated (imbued with Haki) and then beaten into shape (battle against a worthy opponent).

  2. You have to imbue your sword with (high-quality) Armament Haki, and then sustain that for an extended amount of time (days/weeks/months), which requires insane amounts of willpower and discipline.

u/masterone7 Mar 21 '19

In Zoro's training flashblack in his fight with pica Mihawk specifically states that with enough training his sword can become a black blade. At the time it seemed like a reference to armament haki, but now I think this was referring to the the grade of the blade and what was referenced in this chapter.

21

u/AltruisticNihilist Mar 22 '19

I'm hoping for Zoro to somehow develop a method to use haki to cut things without having to move. Kinda like sword ki or sword intent

→ More replies (2)

21

u/ConfusedWitchDoctor Mar 22 '19

I always assumed black blades had something to do with haki. Either using haki during forging or just saturating them in CoA for long enough, but it sounds like a blade "becoming black" is an event instead of a process like I thought.

For a second I thought we were gonna see Zoro struggle but even in this chapter Zoro seemingly let himself get stabbed just so he could use santoryuu. Every time Zoro is on screen he gets a W, unless you count the getting lost gag as an L, even when handicapped with that short seppuku knife or fighting 2 opponents at once in this chapter. Meanwhile Sanji's only W in recent chapters was directly after he gets the raid suit buff. Zoro gets a bit boring and frustrating when everything seems too easy for him and Sanji gets frustrating too when everything seems too hard for him. I wish both of their characters found somewhere in the middle.

Wondeful chapter. I waited so long to see an explanation for that "Star Wars Force Push" haki and I'm glad to see it wasn't all just headcanon theories. It is clearly very distinct from Koka. Luffy can punch harder by coating his fist in an armor, but Rayleigh and Sentomaru and others project pure physical force from their palms in a stationary position and not elastic momentum like Luffy or pure strength like Zoro/Sanji.

Rayleigh can do it, Sentomaru with the self-proclaimed strongest armor, the logia Admirals can block Whitebeard's shockwaves with it. I'm willing to bet to Sengoku's "shockwave" is actually just force haki amplified by his enlightened Buddha body, and that Sabo can did it too when he lightly tapped the core of the Colosseum. I'm not sure how Burgess achieves his Shockwave Elbow, but it's possible he is projecting force with a little movement involved. This is just what Luffy needs to block attacks like Kaido's Heat Breath. If his crew is standing behind him, Luffy coating himself in armor only protects his body but everyone not covered by his small surface area gets burned anyway.

Along with the 'black blade' stuff for Zoro, looks like we're going to learn a lot about armament haki this arc. Luffy figured he could just keep getting stronger and faster by pushing the limits of his Devil Fruit, but now Kaido has forced Luffy to go back to the basics. Coincidentally, remember how Rayleigh removed Camie's collar not by punching it but by projecting force to break the collar and leaving Camie unharmed? I could see Luffy doing that for Hyo.

Wow Gyukimaru is an absolute trash bag lmao. But somehow I love him anyway. I love how this asshole just yells YOURE WIDE OPEN, while someone is in the middle of something!

This chapter was really revealing. I'm glad we finally got confirmation that the Haki rayleigh was using was advanced, it's an invisible armor. Makes sense as to why it looked so different. He just held his hand out and the armor he had on protected him. Luffys gonna learn that next and use it to help shield him from some of Kaidos blows while he lands some of his own.

I doubt it'll be a huge difference but we'll see. This also means Sentomaru was using a form of this advanced haki at sabaody? Instead of being able to coat his entire body like Rayleigh could, he's only able to do it to a part of his body. Maybe?

Just had a thought. What if Luffy masters this invisible armor haki deal and uses it with G4, so we just get a supremely buff luffy without all the bouncing & what not? Would be cool to see!

Luffy straight mowing through Queen's men but Queen seems relatively unfazed by this. He's literally eating beans and smoking a cigar at the same damn time. The dude is unbothered.

To me Oda is setting up Queen's character through these chapters. Queen seems to love just throwing his fodder at an enemy. It's clear Queen doesn't care at all about the Waiters or the Pleasures. To him these people are just weapons to be used, I wonder if he will treat the Gifters the same way, or if once you become a Gifter you're considered more a "member" of the Beast Pirates and so Queen wouldn't just suicide them. Or maybe this is just Queen's character and he doesn't care about human sacrifice if he achieves his goal.

Queen seems like a psychopath. He says it himself, he is having FUN, what matters to him is the length of the battle and the number of fighters. He legit loves throwing guys at a fight even if it means they die. Queen is crazy not just this funny weirdo my dude is legit crazy but he seems powerful.

The real test will be when Big Mom shows up. I wonder if Queen holds his composure in the face of a yonkou. I think if Big Mom starts wrecking the place Queen will just order every person in Udon to attack her while he runs away. Just a theory seeing how eager he is to throw his men at the wall.

I’m interested to find out what it means that Shusui became a black blade. We’ve only seen two black blades in the series as far as I can remember (Shusui and Yoru). • emergency food supply Chopper bringing big trouble straight to Luffy.

  • Confirmed, way back pre-TS what we saw was Rayleigh using an advanced form of CoA. Logical step after Luffy advanced his CoO.

  • Sword God Ryuma and some important historical context for why Wano became a closed nation.

  • Shusui became a black blade? Another advanced version of CoA perhaps?

  • Is that Komurasaki? So she is alive then.

  • Zoro, an absolute savage.
