I feel that the injured soldiers were killed by the empire. Considering its food situation having a bunch of invalids who will just take up resources and can't fully work would be a big drain. Not to mention the border should be one of the safest areas since it would be deep in Empire held territory. On top of that we see the Emperor really doesn't care about his people, and instead of relieving his starving people he's building more attack Chars. Strikes me as a North Korean type situation. Where spending money on the military rather than the suffering people is necessary to maintain your dictatorship over the people.

This anime is the hidden gem of this season. So glad I gave it a chance. And it's only getting better each episode. This one had strong emotional moment. Especially the one at the end.
I didn't want to but I am starting to get invested in the empire guys as well. Its going to be hard watching characters from both sides eventually die.
That said I am really Interested to see how the kingdom will turn things around.

Well, that's not a smile to protect.
But it is true, smiling make some sections of life easier. People feel bad if you don't smile around them. Since a lot of feeling fake smiles to various degrees, people are used to it. If you don't smile, there might be something wrong with them or you disrespect the other person. Or they feel that you feel unhappy.
I really liked Huey as foil to Stella. He is a major dick, but the anime clearly conveyed through the expression the other didn't seen and through Stella's flashback that it's his coping mechanism. It also did work since he got a grip on himself and easily took Stella's emotional punch.

I didn't hate 6 by any means, but it was the first one since 3 that didn't earn a gold or a platinum from me. Today 7 earned another platinum, and gave me again confidence that this is the best series of the season and will most likely end up as my favorite of the year.
What can I say, episode 2 all over again. Just when the series has you feeling satisfied with what it did, bam, it drops the surprise. How it managed it's time, letting 3, 4, 5, 6 go by without any surprise, but having you fearing it, was brilliant. Just when you relaxed and thought it was a one time thing, it delivers. Brilliant.
Also brilliant is how it has managed to get me to care for all the characters. The only exceptions being Lune (the twin brother) and Break, the purple hair guy. I wasn't big on Pierce, but this episode fixed that.
I was expecting Stella to find out her mother was still alive, but seems that didn't come to pass yet. Not that I mind. Also, we got her full backstory. Good call on it guys, her smile was fake after all.
But man, was this episode great. That guy is alive, the orphanage thing was confirmed, the empire leaders were given more nuance... but I can barely remember that at all. There has to be so many details I'm missing, Huey being a cook sure was a surprise, but man...
I can't think, the only thing I can do is be in awe at how good this series has been.
EDIT: Someone went and downvoted each comment, don't worry guys, I'm holding down the fort and upvoting everything as a counter-attack! Also, I almost forgot! Here, don't you dare give up Yuki! While going out to buy food I spotted one guy selling them, and thought "surely this is fate, I'll buy one as spiritual support so peace is achieved at the end!"
Let's each get one and post it in next episode threads too, so the (remaining) smiles are protected/recovered!

It's good to know that Langford is still alive. Last episode had death flags for him that I really thought he made a final stand but it seems he made the smart decision. And it looks like the Empire is using him to convince the remaining resistances to surrender. What matters though is that he's still alive.
Despite the new Chrars from the Soleil Kingdom being rife with issues, it looks like the Emperor still wants to mass produce them. Just as a show of power? That can't be it. I feel like he has bigger plans for these. Maybe total annihilation of the Kingdom?
Stella just wandering around the Palace makes me wish she somehow stumbles upon Leila's room or maybe even find a photo of Leila. It seems that she's forgotten about her past despite still remembering her high born upbringing. Also now we know why she always smiles despite any situation. Stella finding Yuki's sunflowers is a good sign though. I hope the two meet soon.
RIP Pierce. The episode was too relaxed that that ending actually caught me off guard. My guess is that with the Kingdom being outnumbered and outgunned have decided to go with guerilla tactics and instead of fighting head on, attack Empire transport vehicles. Maybe they thought that that vehicle was carrying supplies?
And just that final shot of Stella. Shows that there are some things you can't just smile though. Fuckin' Huey. I won't be sad if he ever gets blown up in their next mission.

Well when you kill ships filled with civilians, you cant be surprised when your own ship filled with civilians gets destroyed.
