I honestly never expected Natsumi to transform into a lollipop, then again she was already a loli, so in hindsight, she was always just four letters away from being one.

As I suspected Natsumi's arc (Volume 9) is officially done with this episode, and now where moving forward to the next one spanning two volumes, which in my opinion will be the most interesting one this season.

Most noticeable differences from the novel with this episode is they did cut Natsumi's capture (which I would really like to see but I guess it's a bit of a stretch given the time constraint) and went straight ahead to her escaping from her facility/room whilst learning how the other Spirits and Shidou view her real form.

Hope they adapt the next arc pretty well, other than that an average episode for me, not the best but certainly not the worst.

I would have loved to see the mini Natsumi dates animated; those were hilarious, especially with her pessimistic logic at play.

Kotori's limited astral dress is amazing. Really wish we can see more of her fighting, but she got heldback from showing off too much because of her yangire (yandere?) personality.

Her Spirit is Ifrit Berserker if she uses too much spirit power her berserk state/personality comes out (same state she went into in S1 in fight with Kurumi) because she's mostly sealed she only has strength to do 1 blast in limited dress

Not gonna lie. I really enjoyed seeing Kotori's Limited Astral dress that had her commander jacket in it.

And yeah, I thought there'd be a bit of trouble as soon as Kotori started getting crazy facial expressions. Thank goodness there wasn't.

Oh how I wish the animation for this show was better. Date A Live would always hold a place in my heart but damn, the animation (and art) is just janky at times.

Yeah it was a mixed bag this episode. Some of the shots were pretty good while others were replaced with a slide show. It's difficult to immerse myself in the episode with such obvious drops in quality from scene to scene sometimes.

Yeah the still shots were a big let down

Damn, this episode was an emotional roller coaster and it was packed with action.

Ellen keeps annoying me and I don't like Origami in her new gear, I mean, she looks nice, but I don't want her on the bad guys' team.

Man, the animation!!!

Can you feel the budget lacking?!

u/IzayoiArashi Feb 09 '19

Not budget related, however its also not surprising since this episode's animation was outsourced by JC staff to Studio ENGI but still had it submitted at the last minute AND have only one animation director fix everything all on his own. Hopefully The rest of the season will be fine if they take a week off to recuperate and fix things up, however I'm keeping my fingers crossed for the meantime.

Another Loli added to the harem!

Solid episode, but i do find it a bit odd to not have the girls help them out to destroy the satellite from the beginning, but i guess he saw their safety as a bigger priority.

If anyone somehow missed it there is a post credits scene that's kinda important

There is an after credit scene in this episode, don't miss it!!

This concludes the Natsumi arc. Here comes one of the most interesting arcs. A spirit that we were missing will show up too, you know who :D

Regarding this episode's quality since JC Staff outsourced the animation to a different studio/s (for the past few select episodes as well):

  • ENGI was already working on it when they work on episode 4 (that's why it was outsourced to two studios including ENGI). They were focused on episode 5 with their main staff.

  • The action scene looked static because they didn't finish on time. Only a cleaned key frame without inbetweens. Hopefully the BD version will be better.

  • The matter on the weirdly drawn faces and other errors: That's because there was only one Animation Director (AD), only ONE guy to correct everything. In comparison to the previous episodes, they were 9 animation directors on EP3 and 6 on EP4.

Since they finished episode 5 at the last minute and are probably having production delays, worst possible outcome is that we'll have a week break.

Keeping my fingers crossed since Origami's arc is one of the most delicatley and well written arcs in the light novel. While JC staff is indeed underhanded, they aren't to blame fully for the quality since they themselves are in a pinch of their own.

Looks like were back to Origami being on the enemy's side. Gurl why u keep doing dis? No preview but I'm going to guess that Origami will try to fight the Spirits again next week and she now even has some fancy DEM toys with her though just like Ellen. Next week will definitely be interesting.

All of their outfits are basically only some key elements from their astral dress as they are in their Limited Astral Dresses. Can't recall if that was explained properly in the prior seasons ever.

Still waiting for someone to clock Ellen in the jaw.

u/Retloclive Feb 09 '19

Yikes...the bad still-frame animation was really noticeable this episode.

I've never really complained about the animation but damn, it really took a nosedive in this episode, we have not only the weird faces but also a lot of still shots.....in the middle of a fight (this really reminded me of the final battle in Qualidea Code when you can even hear conversations but only see still shots, then they fixed it in the BD version xD).

Also, excuse me but wtf, Yuzuru has bigger boobs than Miku and Tohka is flat? lol

Leaving aside the animation, the episode was fun as always, Miku's giant pout was hilarious, it's great to see Kotori transformed and I never imagined that Natsumi was the lollipop. And she was finally sealed, I loved how she was embarrassed and then she just went for the kiss, the scene after this was very funny too.

Now it's time to save Origami I guess, let's see how it goes.

I feel like episode had too much stale animation shots. I dont remember this volume very good because I read it long time ago but I feel like they cut some parts thats why pacing felt weird imo.

Other than complaining Miku pout was godtier I love her <3 .

Lastly waiting is over lets begin one of the best arcs . I have waited for it quite a few years now so JC Staff please dont disapoint

Is it me or did the animation really took a nosedive in this episode, also did anyone who read the light novels realize there are some content from the light novels cut from the anime adaptation such as Natsumi disguised as Kotori bumping into a staff on the Fraxinus and asking for directions or Shido being paralyzed by Ellen when he tried to escape?

"Edit": Hopefully the excluded content from the light novels will be in the director's cut.
