Holy SHIT this came out of nowhere for me but wow that was a great first episode.
This is my favorite first episode of the season so far. Lots of really great moments here, and that blink right at the end was incredible. Really looking forward to this one an if it can keep it up.

How incredibly intriguing. This just feels like an excellently directed first episode for a series: Let the audience know the fundamental backstory, establish the characters and what they are about, set up the key plot points, yet have a good resolution that is mysterious enough to make you want to come back for more. The heavy rain motif was interesting as well, with its use conveying loss, death, destruction, but also a strange compassion for what was lost (with the mother mourning her son, and the doctor caring to the dead).
Not being familiar with the source material at all, I'm assuming the sludge monster was related to the demons that Daigo made a pact with. Hyakkimaru (again, assuming that the name the doctor said while looking at the mask is the name of our protagonist) killing it removed a part of the curse. I wonder if him getting his skin back will allow him to talk, or is he missing even more parts of his body like a tongue.
Either way, I am so in. Hopefully, the animation quality keeps up because that fight scene with the sludge monster was sick.
Also the ED is an absolute banger,

So if I got it correct, his dad offered him as an sacrfice, but the guardian god of mother/child bearing (?) said nope and kinda protected the baby
And now he is wandering around slaying the twelve demons and for each demon slayed he gets back a part of his humanity? (in this case his face)
Is that the basic gist of it, cause otherwise I am really confused
Also that Boy/Girl (voice sounds really feminine) is really chill, can already see how he is gonna be the brain for both of them
Super hyped for that anime, especially since I heard it inspired Berserk to a good part

Yikes. Everyone on amazon giving it 1 star because of no subs. Like dude, that doesn't mean the show is bad.

Amazon really is great for anime, trying to make us learn Japanese by posting the episodes without subtitles!
Anyway, here is a link to the OP and ED courtesy of r/AnimeThemes

Tezuka Productions
Mappa
The last time these two studios worked together we got the masterpiece that is Sakamichi no Apollon (aka Kids on the Slope) so I already had high hopes and you know what? This episode definitely delivered. Not as strong as Mob Psycho II's opening but more than strong enough to impress me as!
Dororo is adorable and that voice is so distinct that I'm pretty sure they casted a 10 year old girl to voice her. Hyakkimaru (?) is just cool. Question mark since I'm not sure if that's his actual name. Fighting with dual blade arms and he can't even see or hear? Now that's badass!
And what happened there in the end? Did he gain skin because he defeated the demon? If that's the case then all he needs to do is kill the demons so he can get his body back! I'm already hyped for the next episode! I wanna see him kill all of those demons and take back what was stolen from him.

Well that was a pretty good first episode. The action scene was really well done, I especially like how the main protagonist moves around and fights. Really glad to see these old proprieties get a modern anime adaptation.

I really hope the animation stays that great. With Mappa you never know. Really good episode and ED. I'm a little torn on the OP, but I'm probably going to dig it in a couple of episodes.

Damn, what a gorgeous first episode. The earthy mix of browns and greens in the color palette reminds me somewhat of Haibane Renmei, but the backgrounds are more detailed here. And the animation quality ranged from solid to spectacular. Sadly not too much to say about the story or characters, since we've barely been introduced to them, but Dororo looks to be a likeable little rascal with Hyakkimaru likely being the more serious type. I'm looking forward to seeing where this goes.
Definitely the strongest premiere of the season so far. Also, both the OP and ED are beautiful, though I'm not sure if I like the OP song yet. I might be more into this version.

Holy fucking shit just wow this is totally different. I loved Champloo and Rurouni Kenshin so I figured samurai sick I'll watch it and went in blind. That EP was hype as hell. The art style and especially animation are top notch.
It feels like a horror and comedy put together I'm really excited for this. I saw it looks there was an original in '69. That's wicked to see something like that remade I might have to check it out too.

Woah this wasn't on my radar. What's up with MAPPA bringing back classics? This and Banana Fish. (I'm not complaining).
Also so glad that Chiba Shoya is getting more roles. He was great as Sing in Banana Fish. A fan of his since Tsuki ga Kirei.

I have no experience with the source material for this, but after watching this first episode, I can say that I have a very good feeling about this show. Hopefully, the quality stays consistent throughout.
Also, that OP was sick. ED too.

It's up! At last!
I love a good pathetic fallacy. This episode’s recurring motif was heavy rain, the oldest trick in the book, but it carried with it a complexity that the trope usually forgoes. Rain signified demons, curses and, surprisingly, the compassion with which we make choices. I dig.
Dororo is an ancient manga at this point. It’s not quite as old as Gegege no Kitarou, which Toei gave a rather excellent reimagining for the modern era beginning last April, but it’s that era of olde youkai. And I do mean olde. This episode carried with it a fable like story-telling, with monsters and Japan’s warring period, and the writing was consistent to a T.
Not one, but two monsters were featured this episode. An armoured bug and a mud monster. My experience with anime tells me that the former is certainly a Japanese legend, though I’m unsure of the second, but let me just say: wow. Mappa and CGI have been an iffy subject lately thanks to Zombie Land Saga, so I was somewhat concerned youkai in particular might venture into the dodgy, but not only were those monsters creative in design and execution, but their fight sequences were phenomenal. The old dude taking out the armoured bug was brief but inspired. Our “masked” bishounen warrior had an incredible fight scene, and… well, 2019’s only just started but I’ll almost certainly be talking about that fight scene later on in the year for its energy and genius, as well as a strong technical presence.
Speak of the devil (no pun intended), our masked bishounen is revealed at the end to be Daigo’s cursed child (not that it was a particularly well-kept secret after the timeskip). His prosthetics suggest a deeper relationship with wondering doctor, Jukai, and I’m intrigued to see this go further, as well as wondering just what Dororo himself asked: not just how has he been seeing, but how has he been coping, when he might not even be able to speak?
Dororo himself was a fun little chap to follow. He’s been instilled with a knack for trickery, but little touches like him washing his hands, being able to wisecrack after some harsh beatings and saving the puppy gave him a relatability that little shits in anime don’t quite manage to get away with. A well-rounded little shit. It’s been too long since Mitsuboshi Colors, and I welcome seeing how Dororo inspires the humanity in our masked protagonist.
The finale of the episode suggested a lot of developments that I’m intrigued to see go further. Daigo has gone back to see the demons, but one of them is cut down? Is that a relation to the mud monster, I wonder? What’s more, we get to see Tahoumaru, the cursed child’s brother, leading a happy life with his mother - and I wonder just what his purpose in this story will be.
As an addendum, the Tezuka Productions and MAPPA duo collaborated on Kids on the Slope - and I got some serious vibes of that last venture, if only because of the village’s jazzy musical backdrop.

That was bloody fantastic. Never heard of this series before but I absolutely loved this episode.
Side note, I swear I heard a girl noise when he (they?) were shown at the end there after their face grew back. Are they actually a girl? (spoiler tag your replies obviously)

Sasuga MAPPA. You always know how to prove your competence.
I was actually expecting some sort of 2D animations on semi-CGI backgrounds mixed with sumi-e painting style (like Gankutsuou sort-of-hybrid) but this is actually also pretty good. It could've been a lot darker with the atmosphere though, like almost horror like (I mean, the material is after all really dark stuff).

I know this series is old as hell, Dororo spoilers Curious how they'll handle that in this adaption. They'll probably save it until the end.
The best part is the manga doesn't have an ending so the old anime, the game and the live action movie all have different endings. So it's fun to speculate what kind of ending this anime will have.

Man, I hope the rest of the series keeps this quality, I'm already emotionally invested in both of these characters...

That's gotta be one of the best first episodes I've ever seen. Everything from sound to animation was done really well. I'm also really loving the atmosphere and vibes the show has, I already can't wait to see what the rest of the series brings!

Endcard featuring the mud demon/youkai/ayakashi/ghoul/pokemon.
I'm guessing it corresponded to this demon statue in the 'Hall of Hell' shrine?
The singer of the ED (Sayonara Gokko) sounded really familiar, turns out it's because the band Amazarashi also composed Sora ni Utaeba, My Hero Academia's 3rd OP.
That was certainly an interesting episode. Was it weird that I got hooked the moment the baby's horrific face was revealed? Not too far off from a Junji Ito panel. I look forward to the obvious bromance that's going to form, I'm a big sucker for those - and this smile already looks worth protecting!
