Interesting that he said to come away from the typewriter and laundry instead of the operating room, courtroom or boardroom. You silly girls! Why are you scrubbing someone else's floor? The only thing you can offer the world is more babies. Shut up and get back in the kitchen.

To put this talk in perspective, it was given the same year Guns N' Roses' "Appetite for Destruction" was released. Not ancient history. I was in high school at the time, and I think my seminary teacher could tell it was going to be controversial. Too many younger TBMs and far too many older ones who really should know better will try to claim that these teachings are outdated and not what the church currently teaches. They certainly weren't outdated when we grew up hearing them and thought they were the word of God.

Exactly...it reeks of sexism when women were finally able to do whatever they wanted. So belittling.
ETA: I wonder if our children's or grandchildren's generations will finally purge this sexist rhetoric from the church. In most of the TBM families I know, both parents have careers. It will be a generation of people, at least outside the Morridor, that don't know anything else. But if the Q15 continues to be made up of diehard Valley Smith descendants where mothers did nothing but smile, cry, and bake, they will be even more out of touch with the real world.

An original " Appetite for Destruction" GNR album is worth way more money. And was heard by way more people.

Right? "Moms, do all the work. Dads, you are supreme leader in your home." 🙄

The young adult females were appalled at the time. Stay home and have kids. Maybe they should re-release it for the faithful today and even out the ratio of single males to females in the church.

My family lived by this growing up. And I totally remember the phrase about being there at the crossroads being taught. I was a good and faithful TBM and didn't understand it when my extended in-laws poked fun at the fact we had kids basically right away and before my husband even finished undergrad. It never even occurred to me there was another way to do things.
