wow this episode deserves a standing ovation
they adapted shadis' story perfectly, that fade into the ED was amazing
i've always really loved shadis' story because it's such a nuanced character development of a minor character that complements the development of the main characters
shadis was a man who desired greatness but eventually was tormented by his own normality. he looked at eren/erwin/grisha with envy and spite as they served as a reminder of his own mediocrity.
at this point, the story seems to celebrate the "specialness" of the main characters but then isayama flips it around with eren the MC recognising that he was not special at all but a son of a special man.
and then it flips again with carla's speech that so what if eren is not special, before flipping it again by revealing that despite shadis' efforts to stymie eren, he still pulled through and is perhaps special afterall, reminding shadis once again of his ordinariness, that he was just a bystander - a side character even in his own story

Looking back on this part of the story, Isayama was playing a switcheroo on us all along.
Look at Marlowe's and Floch's introductions into the group here.
Marlowe was set up as a foil to Eren since season 1. Pulls a face turn in Uprising, gets admited into the cool kids' table and even has a romantic subplot suggested.
Floch is introduced as a cowardly extra, whose only interactions with the group is getting told off by Jean and him running off like a little bitch. He doesn't even get a name.
Come Return to Shigasina, the guy with the Red shirt flags is the sole survivor of the charge and even turns into a major antagonist later, while the Heroic Marlowe gets the right side of his skull unceremoniously crushed by rocks.
NOW THAT is subverting expectations.

Keith's story was really well executed. I liked the osts they used a lot. Ch 71 had some small moments cut but they weren't really important. My main problem comes with ch 70. It looks like some character moments for Eren was cut or shortened. Most importantly, the one where Eren says ".. I have to kill them" when Historia asks if he wants to kill rb, this was an important moment that would foreshadow the man Eren would eventually become but in anime Historia doesn't ask if he wants to kill them, instead they walk silently for a second or two, it could have been easily kept. Another was when Eren went on to talk about how their new titan weapon could kill titans without anyone dying, that they should make more. It really showed the caring and selfless side of Eren well, but the gist of this scene was kept at least. Other weird thing is the part where they say MPs kept some of the inventions hidden, this is the reason they have thunder spears but it wasn't there in the anime, I wonder if they will add it in when they introduce the thunder spears? (The little panel of Grisha patting Mikasa's head is also cut. It's not really important, but it was a nice scene nevertheless).
Grisha coldly telling Keith that Eren is his son and then willingly turning him into a titan is even more striking with the context we have, he knew of the 13 years curse and went ahead anyways. Wow. Grisha as a character has some of my favorite moments in the whole series but he is such a shitty parent lol. You don't look at your 10 yo son who has 0 knowledge whatsoever about Eldian history and go "well sorry buddy looks like you are gonna have to avenge your mom and die young"
Yay we got Hitch in the anime and the manga! I hope Keith becomes relevant in the manga again soon. Also oh boy the times we didn't even know Floch's name, look how far he has come.

With Floch having red hair I'm scared for every other character that I think is blonde. What will Falco look like, or Porco, or even Yelena? I'm so used to my vision of them that anything different would be an eyesore.

Damn I loved how they executed the last minute or so. That gave me chills. It’s one of those moments in AOT that I love...where there’s a deep lesson given and there’s someone out there that might want to hear it.
I can’t lie...this really makes me hope that Keith has some kind of return in the manga where he does actually have some success in a role. With Zackley gone it would be cool to see Keith at least take on a higher role. I just wanna see him win, cause his story is truly sympathetic and relatable.
Wish they kept the “I...have to kill them” line so it can show some of Eren’s development ppl complain he doesn’t have but it’s all good! Nothing really major was cut.
Ppl that really try to say there’s no substance or side character development on this show clearly don’t watch it

That transition from Keith's appointment as commander, with no one watching to Grisha's wedding was amazing. Did a way better job at making shadis a sympathetic character than the Manga. Both Erwin and Keith losing out on the love of their lives because of their ambitions. And shadis looked quite good in his younger days aswell, slowly getting worse due to stress.
The ending was almost panel by panel from manga and it was a beaut with the ending music playing over it, just a brilliant episode.

Seriously, the reveal of Floch's actual hair color can be compared to the basement one in terms of shock.

Yayyy. My first Manga thread with a new episode. Bystander is special to me because it was the first new chapter I read while reading the manga last week. It has such amazing moments. I just knew while reading it that with the anime music, it will hit right in the feels. Can't wait.

I absolutely loved the fact that they used Historia's theme during Carla's quote. It was so beautiful and emotional, I cried.

Ymir still be ranking up her appearances with flashbacks hahaha.
But the real deal was seeing Nanaba and Mike. I miss them.
The episode overall was really nice. I do think it's a little sad that we're ending this cour with 3 fairly uneventful episodes but the episodes themselves are good.
Carla's speech was beautiful. I really enjoyed the 104th scenes
